RESUMO

This study aimed to explore how the type and visual modality of a recommendation agent's identity affect male university students' (1) self-reported responses to agent-recommended symbolic brand in evaluating the naturalness of virtual agents, human, or artificial intelligence (AI) and (2) early event-related potential (ERP) responses between text- and face-specific scalp locations. Twenty-seven participants (M = 25.26, SD = 5.35) whose consumption was more motivated by symbolic needs (vs. functional) were instructed to perform a visual task to evaluate the naturalness of the target stimuli. As hypothesized, the subjective evaluation showed that they had lower attitudes and perceived higher unnaturalness when the symbolic brand was recommended by AI (vs. human). Based on this self-report, two epochs were segmented for the ERP analysis: human-natural and AI-unnatural. As revealed by P100 amplitude modulation on visual modality of two agents, their evaluation relied more on face image rather than text. Furthermore, this tendency was consistently observed in that of N170 amplitude when the agent identity was defined as human. However, when the agent identity was defined as AI, reversed N170 modulation was observed, indicating that participants referred more to textual information than graphical information to assess the naturalness of the agent.

RESUMO

In the southeast and east coasts of the Republic of Korea, it is essential to monitor mercury accumulation in coastal organisms in view of the higher mercury distribution in sediments and human samples. However, mercury pollution monitoring in organisms, especially higher trophic-level organisms that can exhibit high mercury accumulation, is limited. Here, we examined the applicability of the eggs of the black-tailed gull (Larus crassirostris), which belongs to a high trophic level, for mercury monitoring in coastal areas. Breeding sites were selected in West, Southeast, and East Seas with different mercury concentrations in other matrices (sediment and biological samples of residents). The 5-year mean total mercury concentration in eggs collected during the breeding seasons from 2016 to 2020 was lower in Baengnyeongdo (705 ± 81 ng/g dry weight (dry), West Sea) than in Hongdo (1,207 ± 214 ng/g dry, Southeast Sea) and Ulleungdo (1,095 ± 95 ng/g dry, East Sea). The different patterns of mercury concentration in gull eggs among the breeding sites was consistent with those in the other matrices among the coastal areas. These results support the applicability of the black-tailed gull egg as an indicator for establishing a monitoring framework in the coastal areas of the Republic of Korea.

RESUMO

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are used in industrial and commercial products due to their amphiphilic properties. Birds have been utilized as biomonitoring species due to their environmental pollutant vulnerability and wide distribution. The Oriental Magpie (Pica serica) is a representative residential species inhabiting terrestrial environments. In this study, we measured PFAS concentrations in Magpie liver tissue (n = 253) collected from 12 Korean regions in 2004 and 2017. The predominant compounds were perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS; mean: 23.8 ng/g wet weight), perfluorotridecanoic acid (PFTrDA; 2.79 ng/g), and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA: 2.11 ng/g). We observed significant correlations between Magpie PFAS measurements, indicating similar sources and bioaccumulation processes. Adult females showed significantly lower PFOS concentrations than adult males and young males and females, indicating that avian sex is a crucial physiological factor of PFAS accumulation. PFOS, perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), and perfluorotetradecanoic acid (PFTeDA) concentrations in urban regions were significantly higher than rural regions. PFOS concentrations in Magpie livers increased significantly between sampling years, whereas C11-C13 carboxylic acids (PFCAs) decreased. This suggests that urbanization and population are major factors in Magpie PFAS accumulation. Almost all hepatic PFOS concentrations were below the threshold values proposed by previous studies, implying limited risks. Our findings suggest that the Oriental Magpies are PFAS sentinel in residential environments. This is the first comprehensive report on biomonitoring of PFASs using the Oriental Magpie.

RESUMO

This research investigates the novel link between consumers' support for underdog brands and their ethical expectations of such brands and finds that the underdog brand positioning may not always be beneficial. Rather, we argue that the identification-based supporting motivation for underdog brands may backfire when the accompanying specific moral expectation is not satisfied. Study 1 demonstrates that the underdog brand falls into an ethical trap in which consumers judge the brand more harshly when ethical transgressions are committed. In Study 2, the psychological underlying mechanism for this ethical underdog trap effect is proved to be perceived betrayal. In Study 3, a boundary condition, community-related (vs. autonomy-related) transgressions, is explored. In Study 4, the three types of transgressions (autonomy, community, and functional) and the mediating effects of perceived betrayal are tested in integrated research design. Finally, theoretical and managerial implications are discussed, followed by conclusions.

RESUMO

A method for the simultaneous determination in mussel of 8 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 23 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and 35 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including alkyl-PAHs, was optimised using ultrasound-assisted cloudy extraction and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Optimal selection of the extraction solvent and the dispersing solvent contributed to a high extraction yield and a clean extract. The ranges of the lower limits of detection of PCBs, OCPs and PAHs were 0.012-0.058, 0.01-0.29 and 0.01-0.5 µg kg-1, respectively. The feasibility of the proposed method was validated by analysing standard reference materials of mussel with satisfactory results. The precision achieved by this method was in the range of 0.677-2.69% (PCBs), 1.14-6.60% (OCPs) and 0.694-7.46% (PAHs), and its accuracy was in the range of 101-104% (PCBs), 99.6-106% (OCPs) and 101-110% (PAHs). The advantages of the method include the simultaneous measurement of 66 analytes and the simplicity, low cost and high sensitivity of the procedure. When the proposed method was used to analyse the target compounds in 11 mussel samples, the analytical results displayed a concentration range of 0.41-0.45 µg kg-1 for PCBs, 0.26-6.49 µg kg-1 for OCPs, and 3.48-30.69 µg kg-1 for PAHs.

RESUMO

In marketing, the use of visual-art-based designs on products or packaging crucially impacts consumers' decision-making when purchasing. While visual art in product packaging should be designed to induce consumer's favorable evaluations, it should not evoke excessive affective arousal, because this may lead to the depletion of consumer's cognitive resources. Thus, consumers may use heuristic decision-making and commit an inadvertent mistake while purchasing. Most existing studies on visual arts in marketing have focused on preference (i.e., affective valence) using subjective evaluations. To address this, we applied a neuroscientific measure, electroencephalogram (EEG) to increase experimental validity. Two successive tasks were designed to examine the effects of affective arousal and affective valence, evoked by visual artwork, on the consecutive cognitive decision-making. In task 1, to evaluate the effect of visual art, EEG of two independent groups of people was measured when they viewed abstract artwork. The abstract art of neoplasticism (AbNP) group (n = 20) was showing Mondrian's artwork, while the abstract art of expressionism (AbEX) group (n = 18) viewed Kandinsky's artwork. The neoplasticism movement strove to eliminate emotion in art and expressionism to express the feelings of the artist. Building on Gallese's embodied simulation theory, AbNP and AbEX artworks were expected to induce lower and higher affect, respectively. In task 2, we investigated how the induced affect differentially influenced a succeeding cognitive Stroop task. We anticipated that the AbEX group would deplete more cognitive resources than AbNP group, based on capacity limitation theory. Significantly stronger affect was induced in the AbEX group in task 1 than in the AbNP group, especially in affective arousal. In task 2, the AbEX group showed a faster reaction time and higher error rate in the Stroop task. According to our hypotheses, the higher affective arousal state of the AbEX group might deplete more cognitive resources during task 1 and result in poorer performance in task 2 because affect impacted their cognitive resources. This is the first study using neuroscientific measures to prove that high affective arousal induced by visual arts on packaging may induce heuristic decision-making in consumers, thereby advancing our understanding of neuromarketing.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the surgical outcomes of simultaneous cochlear implantation (CI) with subtotal petrosectomy (SP). METHODS: Medical records of thirty-one patients (31 ears) who underwent simultaneous CI with SP in two tertiary referral centers for management of profound hearing loss secondary to chronic suppurative otitis media, cholesteatoma, previous open cavity, temporal bone fracture, and temporal bone irradiation were retrospectively analyzed. Pre and postoperative speech performances and related complications requiring surgical correction were evaluated. RESULTS: Significant improvement in postoperative speech performance was observed in all 31 patients compared to preoperative result. Of the 31 patients, complications occurred in three patients (9.6%). One patient exhibited the breakdown of blind sac closure of the external auditory canal and two others exhibited the migration of the receiver-stimulator cochlear implant. The migrations occurred despite tie-down fixation of the device to the skull. The migrated devices were repositioned using revision surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Simultaneous CI with SP is an effective and safe surgical method with relatively low complication incidence. However, particular attention should be paid to prevent certain complications. The receiver-stimulator may be predisposed to migrate to abnormal position because it can be placed with lack of tight subperiosteal support at a more superior or posterior location of the skull where the skull curvature changes abruptly than can conventional CI using limited mastoidectomy and posterior tympanotomy approach.

RESUMO

Studies on the monitoring of mercury accumulation using high trophic-level predators of the marine ecosystem have been scarce in South Korea. In this study, we compared the mercury concentrations of the eggs of the black-tailed gulls, a higher-order predator, breeding in two coastal areas. Breeding sites with varying mercury concentrations in land-origin freshwater fish and freshwater and marine sediments were selected in the southeastern (Hongdo Island) and western (Baengnyeongdo Island) seas. The 5-year mean total mercury concentration in eggs collected during the breeding seasons from 2012 to 2016 was higher in those collected from Hongdo than in those collected from Baengnyeongdo. This difference in mercury concentration in eggs was observed for each year. In addition, the total mercury concentration in eggs was consistently higher on Hongdo, which also had higher mercury pollution, than on Baengnyeongdo Island. These results support the suitability of black-tailed gull eggs for monitoring of mercury pollution.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study were to evaluate the clinical characteristics of temporal bone metastasis (TBM) and to determine whether the characteristics differed according to primary malignancy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data on 20 patients diagnosed with TBM between January 2000 and January 2017. Demographics, the period from diagnosis of primary malignancy to TBM diagnosis, the period from TBM diagnosis to death, the type and staging of primary malignancy, otologic manifestations, and TBM sites were assessed. After the primary malignancies were divided into solid cancers and hematologic malignancies, each parameter was compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The most common primary malignancy with TBM was lung cancer (45%). The most common otologic symptoms and signs were facial palsy (30.5%) and hearing loss (30.5%). The temporal squama (23%) and the facial nerve (20%) were the most commonly involved. Most TBMs occurred late in the disease process after the primary malignancy first metastasized to other organs. Hematologic malignancies metastasized significantly more frequently to the external auditory canal and the middle ear/mastoid compared to solid cancers (P=0.001 and P=0.004, respectively). CONCLUSION: If otologic manifestations such as facial palsy and hearing loss are presented in patients at advanced stages of malignancy, TBM of primary malignancy should be suspected. In addition, hematologic malignancies tend to metastasize to the external auditory canal and the middle ear cleft more commonly than solid cancers do.

RESUMO

Understanding large-scale magnetic field growth in turbulent plasmas in the magnetohydrodynamic limit is a goal of magnetic dynamo theory. In particular, assessing how well large-scale helical field growth and saturation in simulations match those predicted by existing theories is important for progress. Using numerical simulations of isotropically forced turbulence without large-scale shear with its implications, we focus on several additional aspects of this comparison: (1) Leading mean-field dynamo theories which break the field into large and small scales predict that large-scale helical field growth rates are determined by the difference between kinetic helicity and current helicity with no dependence on the nonhelical energy in small-scale magnetic fields. Our simulations show that the growth rate of the large-scale field from fully helical forcing is indeed unaffected by the presence or absence of small-scale magnetic fields amplified in a precursor nonhelical dynamo. However, because the precursor nonhelical dynamo in our simulations produced fields that were strongly subequipartition with respect to the kinetic energy, we cannot yet rule out the potential influence of stronger nonhelical small-scale fields. (2) We have identified two features in our simulations which cannot be explained by the most minimalist versions of two-scale mean-field theory: (i) fully helical small-scale forcing produces significant nonhelical large-scale magnetic energy and (ii) the saturation of the large-scale field growth is time delayed with respect to what minimalist theory predicts. We comment on desirable generalizations to the theory in this context and future desired work.
