RESUMO

The North American cheetah-like cat Miracinonyx trumani is an extinct species that roamed the Pleistocene prairies 13 000 years ago. Although M. trumani is more closely related to the cougar (Puma concolor) than to the living cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), it is believed that both A. jubatus and M. trumani possess a highly specialized skeleton for fast-running, including limbs adapted for speed at the expense of restricting the ability of prey grappling. However, forelimb dexterity of M. trumani has not been yet investigated. Here, we quantify the 3D-shape of the humerus distal epiphysis as a proxy for elbow-joint morphology in a sample of living cats to determine whether the extinct M. trumani was specialized to kill open-country prey using predatory behaviour based on fast running across the prairies and steppe terrains of the North American Pleistocene. We show that M. trumani had an elbow morphology intermediate to that of P. concolor and A. jubatus, suggesting that M. trumani had a less specialized pursuit predatory behaviour than A. jubatus. We propose that M. trumani probably deployed a unique predatory behaviour without modern analogues. Our results bring into question the degree of ecomorphological convergence between M. trumani and its Old World vicar A. jubatus.

RESUMO

The co-occurrence of substance use disorders (SUD) and other mental disorders (OMD) is assumed to be high, but the details are uncertain in Spain. The objective of the present study was to know the prevalence of this comorbidity, as well as the pharmacological treatment, both in specific addiction treatment networks and in mental health networks, with a gender perspective. Observational, multicenter study, with a randomized sample, of patients under treatment for SUD or OMD in Spain (N = 1783). A specific questionnaire, collecting sociodemographic and clinical variables, diagnosed SUD and OMD, and prescribed psychotropic drugs, was completed by treating clinicians. Differences between females and males were searched. A high prevalence of OMD was found in those patients treated for their SUD (71%), and also of diagnoses of SUD (59%) in people treated for OMD. Significant relationships between addiction to certain substances and specific mental disorders were found (with no main differences between women and men). The treatments for OMD were very common in the addiction treatment networks, but that of SUDs in those patients treated in the mental health networks was less than expected. A high prescription of benzodiazepines was found. Women were less frequently diagnosed with cannabis, opioid, and especially cocaine use disorders, and they had fewer psychotic disorders and more affective, anxiety, sleep, and eating disorders, with the rest being the same, including personality disorders. Women had fewer treatments with agonists and more with antagonists, and more prescriptions of anxiolytics and antidepressants. This study provides preliminary information on the coexistence in routine clinical practice of addictive disorders and other mental disorders in Spain, and on the treatment provided, and shows differences in prevalence and clinical characteristics, and especially in treatment approaches between women and men. Thus, should be useful to adapt the treatment response with greater precision, and with a gender perspective.

RESUMO

There are physical Human-Robot Interaction (pHRI) applications where the robot has to grab the human body, such as rescue or assistive robotics. Being able to precisely estimate the grasping location when grabbing a human limb is crucial to perform a safe manipulation of the human. Computer vision methods provide pre-grasp information with strong constraints imposed by the field environments. Force-based compliant control, after grasping, limits the amount of applied strength. On the other hand, valuable tactile and proprioceptive information can be obtained from the pHRI gripper, which can be used to better know the features of the human and the contact state between the human and the robot. This paper presents a novel dataset of tactile and kinesthetic data obtained from a robot gripper that grabs a human forearm. The dataset is collected with a three-fingered gripper with two underactuated fingers and a fixed finger with a high-resolution tactile sensor. A palpation procedure is performed to record the shape of the forearm and to recognize the bones and muscles in different sections. Moreover, an application for the use of the database is included. In particular, a fusion approach is used to estimate the actual grasped forearm section using both kinesthetic and tactile information on a regression deep-learning neural network. First, tactile and kinesthetic data are trained separately with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks, considering the data are sequential. Then, the outputs are fed to a Fusion neural network to enhance the estimation. The experiments conducted show good results in training both sources separately, with superior performance when the fusion approach is considered.

RESUMO

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is a leading cause of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Maternal reporting in childbearing women or pregnant women is the standard for the early detection of alcohol consumption. The Green Page (GP) is a screening questionnaire of environmental health which includes the alcohol intake record during pregnancy and/or lactation period. The aim of this paper is to review the features of the different questionnaires for the detection of alcohol consumption during the gestation period and the GP, as well as to make a comparison between them. Review of the scientific literature published over the last 10 years of indexed articles in Medline. Combined searching strategy with MeSH descriptors: 'pregnancy, alcohol drinking, surveys and/or questionnaires. AUDIT, AUDIT-C and SURP-P are mainly self-administered and do not require training. SURP-P and 4P´s are validated in pregnant women. Others detect quantity and frequency of exposure, need specific training and are administered face to face: TLFB, RD, ACOG antepartum record and the GP. ACOG antepartum record and GP are specific for pregnant population. GP detects alcohol consumption at the beginning of pregnancy in both women and their partner on a holistic and global environmental health approach. A careful face-to-face recording of alcohol exposure with trained staff, with an integrative and global environmental health focus throughout pregnancy, may help improve prevention and screening of pregnancy at risk for FASD.

The anatomy of the primate forearm is frequently investigated in terms of locomotor mode, substrate use, and manual dexterity. Such studies typically rely upon broad, interspecific samples for which one or two representative taxa are used to characterize the anatomy of their genus or family. To interpret variation between distantly related taxa, however, it is necessary to contextualize these differences by quantifying variation at lower hierarchical levels, that is, more fine-grained representation within specific genera or families. In this study, we present a focused evaluation of the variation in muscle organization, integration, and architecture within two speciose primate families: the Callitrichidae and Lemuridae. We demonstrate that, within each lineage, several muscle functional groups exhibit substantial variation in muscle organization. Most notably, the digital extensors appear highly variable (particularly among callitrichids), with many unique configurations represented. In terms of architectural variables, both families are more conservative, with the exception of the genus Callimico-for which an increase is observed in forearm muscle mass and strength. We suggest this reflects the increased use of vertical climbing and trunk-to-trunk leaping within this genus relative to the more typically fine-branch substrate use of the other callitrichids. Overall, these data emphasize the underappreciated variation in forearm myology and suggest that overly generalized typification of a taxon's anatomy may conceal significant intraspecific and intrageneric variation therein. Thus, considerations of adaptation within the forearm musculature should endeavor to consider the full range of anatomical variation when making comparisons between multiple taxa within an evolutionary context.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to compare patients' satisfaction, experience, objectives, and opinion based on their current opioid substitution therapy (OST) (buprenorphine/naloxone (B/N) or methadone). The PREDEPO study is an observational, cross-sectional, multicentric study performed in Spain. Adult patients diagnosed with opioid use disorder (OUD) receiving OST were included. They were asked to fill in a questionnaire regarding their current OST. A total of 98 patients were enrolled (B/N: 50%, methadone: 50%). Mean age was 47 ± 8 years old and 80% were male. Treatment satisfaction was similar between groups. The most frequently reported factor for being "very/quite satisfied" was "being able to distribute the dose at different times throughout the day" (44% B/N vs. 63% methadone; p = .122). A significantly lower proportion of patients in the B/N group versus the methadone group reported that having to collect the medication daily was "very/quite annoying" (19% vs. 52%, p = .032). Treatment objectives reported by the majority of patients were similar between groups ("not feeling in withdrawal anymore", "reduce/definitely stop drug use", "improve my health", and "stop thinking about using daily") except for "not having money problems anymore" (73% B/N vs. 92% methadone; p = .012).  These results suggest there are several unmet expectations regarding current OST. There is a need for new treatments that reduce the burden of OUD, avoid the need for daily dosing, and are less stigmatizing which in turn could improve patient management, adherence and, quality of life.

The co-occurrence of substance use disorders (SUD) and other mental disorders (OMD) is assumed to be high but is, in fact, unknown in Spain; and it is approached from different healthcare networks. The objective of the present study was to know the prevalence of this co-occurrence, both in specific addiction treatment networks and in mental health networks, in Spain. An observational, multicenter cross study, with a randomized sample, of patients under treatment for SUD or OMD in different Autonomous Communities of Spain was carried out (N=1,783). A specific ad hoc online questionnaire collecting sociodemographic variables, substance use and diagnoses of SUD and OMD was completed. The data obtained in the survey show a significant concurrence of SUD and OMD diagnoses (in more than 60% of the patients). A high prevalence of OMD was found in those patients receiving treatment for their SUD (71%), and also of diagnoses of any SUD (68.9%) and active substance use (50%, except tobacco) in people receiving treatment for diagnoses of OMD. Also were found significant relationships between addiction to certain substances and specific mental disorders: personality disorders with all SUDs; psychotic disorders with cannabis use disorder, but not cocaine use disorder; affective disorders with cocaine use disorder, and anxiety disorders with cannabis use disorder. This study provides preliminary information about the high coexistence in routine clinical practice of addictive disorders and other mental disorders in different treatment settings in Spain.

The sacrum is a key piece of the vertebrate skeleton, since it connects the caudal region with the presacral region of the vertebral column and the hind limbs through the pelvis. Therefore, understanding its form and function is of great relevance in vertebrate ecomorphology. However, it is striking that morphometric studies that quantify its morphological evolution in relation to function are scarce. The main goal of this study is to investigate the morphological evolution of the sacrum in relation to its function in the mammalian order Carnivora, using three-dimensional (3D) geometric morphometrics. Principal component analysis under a phylogenetic background indicated that changes in sacrum morphology are mainly focused on the joint areas where it articulates with other parts of the skeleton allowing resistance to stress at these joints caused by increasing muscle loadings. In addition, we demonstrated that sacrum morphology is related to both the length of the tail relativised to the length of the body, and the length of the body relativised to body mass. We conclude that the sacrum in carnivores has evolved in response to the locomotor requirements of the species analysed, but in locomotion, each family has followed alternative morphological solutions to address the same functional demands.

RESUMO

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation carried out in legume root nodules requires transition metals. These nutrients are delivered by the host plant to the endosymbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria living within the nodule cells, a process in which vascular transport is essential. As members of the Yellow Stripe-Like (YSL) family of metal transporters are involved in root to shoot transport, they should also be required for root to nodule metal delivery. The genome of the model legume Medicago truncatula encodes eight YSL proteins, four of them with a high degree of similarity to Arabidopsis thaliana YSLs involved in long-distance metal trafficking. Among them, MtYSL3 is a plasma membrane protein expressed by vascular cells in roots and nodules and by cortical nodule cells. Reducing the expression level of this gene had no major effect on plant physiology when assimilable nitrogen was provided in the nutrient solution. However, nodule functioning was severely impaired, with a significant reduction of nitrogen fixation capabilities. Further, iron and zinc accumulation and distribution changed. Iron was retained in the apical region of the nodule, while zinc became strongly accumulated in the nodule veins in the ysl3 mutant. These data suggest a role for MtYSL3 in vascular delivery of iron and zinc to symbiotic nitrogen fixation.

RESUMO

In physical Human-Robot Interaction (pHRI), forces exerted by humans need to be estimated to accommodate robot commands to human constraints, preferences, and needs. This paper presents a method for the estimation of the interaction forces between a human and a robot using a gripper with proprioceptive sensing. Specifically, we measure forces exerted by a human limb grabbed by an underactuated gripper in a frontal plane using only the gripper's own sensors. This is achieved via a regression method, trained with experimental data from the values of the phalanx angles and actuator signals. The proposed method is intended for adaptive shared control in limb manipulation. Although adding force sensors provides better performance, the results obtained are accurate enough for this application. This approach requires no additional hardware: it relies uniquely on the gripper motor feedback-current, position and torque-and joint angles. Also, it is computationally cheap, so processing times are low enough to allow continuous human-adapted pHRI for shared control.

RESUMO

In this study, we explore the relationship between orbit anatomy and different ecological factors in carnivorous mammals from a phylogenetic perspective. We calculated the frontation (α), convergence (ß), and orbitotemporal (Ω) angles of the orbit from 3D coordinates of anatomical landmarks in a wide sample of carnivores with different kinds of visual strategy (i.e. photopic, scotopic, and mesopic), habitat (i.e. open, mixed, and closed), and substrate use (i.e. arboreal, terrestrial, and aquatic). We used Bloomberg's K and Pagel's λ to assess phylogenetic signal in frontation, convergence, and orbitotemporal angles. The association of orbit orientation with skull length and ecology was explored using phylogenetic generalized least squares and phylogenetic manova, respectively. Moreover, we also computed phylomorphospaces from orbit orientation. Our results indicate that there is not a clear association between orbit orientation and the ecology of living carnivorans. We hypothesize that the evolution of the orbit in mammalian carnivores represents a new case of an ecological bottleneck specific to carnivorans. New directions for future research are discussed in light of this new evidence.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Urinary lithiasis involves a major source of morbidity and economic costs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adherence to the European Association of Urology Guidelines on Urolithiasis with regard to treatment among Spanish urologists. METHODS: A total of 723 patients were included in a prospective study between May 1, 2014, and July 31, 2014. The study involved 8 hospitals responsible of urolithiasis in a geographical area of Spain (Comunidad Valenciana) with approximately 4,500,000 inhabitants. Data were collected about the demographic characteristics of the patients, the characteristics of the stones, and the indicated treatment, in order to analyze the adherence to the clinical guidelines. A 90% threshold was used in concordance with the indications in the guidelines. RESULTS: Adherence to guidelines was poor in chemolysis, distal and ureteral calculi, and >2 cm renal calculi. Adherence was high in <2 cm renal calculi. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, the overall adherence to the clinical guidelines regarding the therapeutic indication for urinary lithiasis has been low. In the case of both renal and ureteral stones, the adherence in small lithiasis has been greater, compared with larger ones. In our survey, a trend has been observed in favor of endoscopic procedures even in large lithiasis.

RESUMO

In this paper, a novel method of active tactile perception based on 3D neural networks and a high-resolution tactile sensor installed on a robot gripper is presented. A haptic exploratory procedure based on robotic palpation is performed to get pressure images at different grasping forces that provide information not only about the external shape of the object, but also about its internal features. The gripper consists of two underactuated fingers with a tactile sensor array in the thumb. A new representation of tactile information as 3D tactile tensors is described. During a squeeze-and-release process, the pressure images read from the tactile sensor are concatenated forming a tensor that contains information about the variation of pressure matrices along with the grasping forces. These tensors are used to feed a 3D Convolutional Neural Network (3D CNN) called 3D TactNet, which is able to classify the grasped object through active interaction. Results show that 3D CNN performs better, and provide better recognition rates with a lower number of training data.

RESUMO

Advances in embedded electronic systems, the development of new communication protocols, and the application of artificial intelligence paradigms have enabled the improvement of current automation systems of energy management. Embedded devices integrate different sensors with connectivity, computing resources, and reduced cost. Communication and cloud services increase their performance; however, there are limitations in the implementation of these technologies. If the cloud is used as the main source of services and resources, overload problems will occur. There are no models that facilitate the complete integration and interoperability in the facilities already created. This article proposes a model for the integration of smart energy management systems in new and already created facilities, using local embedded devices, Internet of Things communication protocols and services based on artificial intelligence paradigms. All services are distributed in the new smart grid network using edge and fog computing techniques. The model proposes an architecture both to be used as support for the development of smart services and for energy management control systems adapted to the installation: a group of buildings and/or houses that shares energy management and energy generation. Machine learning to predict consumption and energy generation, electric load classification, energy distribution control, and predictive maintenance are the main utilities integrated. As an experimental case, a facility that incorporates wind and solar generation is used for development and testing. Smart grid facilities, designed with artificial intelligence algorithms, implemented with Internet of Things protocols, and embedded control devices facilitate the development, cost reduction, and the integration of new services. In this work, a method to design, develop, and install smart services in self-consumption facilities is proposed. New smart services with reduced costs are installed and tested, confirming the advantages of the proposed model.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: It is widely viewed that orangutans lack a ligamentum teres femoris (LTF) inserting on the femoral head because orangutans lack a distinct fovea capitis. Orangutans employ acrobatic quadrumanous clambering that requires a high level of hip joint mobility, and the absence of an LTF is believed to be an adaptation to increase hip mobility. However, there are conflicting reports in the literature about whether there may be a different LTF configuration in orangutans, perhaps with a ligament inserting on the femoral neck instead. Here we perform a dissection-based study of orangutan hip joints, assess the soft tissue and hard tissue correlates of the orangutan LTF, and histologically examination the LTF to evaluate whether it is homologous to that found in other hominoids. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The hip joints from six orangutans were dissected. In the two orangutans with an LTF passing to the femoral head, the LTF was assessed histologically. Skeletonized femora (n=56) in osteological repositories were examined for evidence of a foveal pit. RESULTS: We observed an LTF in two of the three infant orangutans but not in the sub-adult or adult specimens. Histological examination of the infant LTF shows a distinct artery coursing through the LTF to the head of the femur. One percent of orangutan femora present with a foveal scar, but no pit, on the femoral head. DISCUSSION: Despite being absent in adults, the LTF is present in at least some orangutans during infancy. We suggest that the LTF maintains a role in blood supply to the femoral head early in life. Because the LTF can limit hip mobility, this may explain why the LTF may be lost as an orangutan ages and gains locomotor independence. These findings enhance our understanding of orangutan hip morphology and underscore the need for future soft tissue investigations.

RESUMO

The Internet of Things (IoT) has opened productive ways to cultivate soil with the use of low-cost hardware (sensors/actuators) and communication (Internet) technologies. Remote equipment and crop monitoring, predictive analytic, weather forecasting for crops or smart logistics and warehousing are some examples of these new opportunities. Nevertheless, farmers are agriculture experts but, usually, do not have experience in IoT applications. Users who use IoT applications must participate in its design, improving the integration and use. In this work, different industrial agricultural facilities are analysed with farmers and growers to design new functionalities based on IoT paradigms deployment. User-centred design model is used to obtain knowledge and experience in the process of introducing technology in agricultural applications. Internet of things paradigms are used as resources to facilitate the decision making. IoT architecture, operating rules and smart processes are implemented using a distributed model based on edge and fog computing paradigms. A communication architecture is proposed using these technologies. The aim is to help farmers to develop smart systems both, in current and new facilities. Different decision trees to automate the installation, designed by the farmer, can be easily deployed using the method proposed in this document.

RESUMO

Electromagnetic radiation is energy that interacts with matter. The interaction process is of great importance to the sensing applications that characterize material media. Parameters like constant dielectric represent matter characteristics and they are identified using emission, interaction and reception of electromagnetic radiation in adapted environmental conditions. How the electromagnetic wave responds when it interacts with the material media depends on the range of frequency used and the medium parameters. Different disciplines use this interaction and provides non-intrusive applications with clear benefits, remote sensing, earth sciences (geology, atmosphere, hydrosphere), biological or medical disciplines use this interaction and provides non-intrusive applications with clear benefits. Electromagnetic waves are transmitted and analyzed in the receiver to determine the interaction produced. In this work a method based in differential measurement technique is proposed as a novel way of detecting and characterizing electromagnetic matter characteristics using sensors based on a microstrip patch. The experimental results, based on simulations, show that it is possible to obtain benefits from the behavior of the wave-medium interaction using differential measurement on reception of electromagnetic waves at different frequencies or environmental conditions. Differential method introduce advantages in measure processes and promote new sensors development.
