RESUMO

Bed load sediment transport, in which wind or water flowing over a bed of sediment causes grains to roll or hop along the bed, is a critically important mechanism in contexts ranging from river restoration1 to planetary exploration2. Despite its widespread occurrence, predictions of bed load sediment flux are notoriously imprecise3,4. Many studies have focused on grain size variability5 as a source of uncertainty, but few have investigated the role of grain shape, even though shape has long been suspected to influence transport rates6. Here we show that grain shape can modify bed load transport rates by an amount comparable to the scatter in many sediment transport datasets4,7,8. We develop a theory that accounts for grain shape effects on fluid drag and granular friction and predicts that the onset and efficiency of transport depend on the coefficients of drag and bulk friction of the transported grains. Laboratory experiments confirm these predictions and reveal that the effect of grain shape on sediment transport can be difficult to intuit from the appearance of grains. We propose a shape-corrected sediment transport law that collapses our experimental measurements. Our results enable greater accuracy in predictions of sediment transport and help reconcile theories developed for spherical particles with the behaviour of natural sediment grains.

RESUMO

Alluvial rivers are conveyor belts of fluid and sediment that provide a record of upstream climate and erosion on Earth, Titan, and Mars. However, many of Earth's rivers remain unsurveyed, Titan's rivers are not well resolved by current spacecraft data, and Mars' rivers are no longer active, hindering reconstructions of planetary surface conditions. To overcome these problems, we use dimensionless hydraulic geometry relations-scaling laws that relate river channel dimensions to flow and sediment transport rates-to calculate in-channel conditions using only remote sensing measurements of channel width and slope. On Earth, this offers a way to predict flow and sediment flux in rivers that lack field measurements and shows that the distinct dynamics of bedload-dominated, suspended load-dominated, and bedrock rivers give rise to distinct channel characteristics. On Mars, this approach not only predicts grain sizes at Gale Crater and Jezero Crater that overlap with those measured by the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers, it enables reconstructions of past flow conditions that are consistent with proposed long-lived hydrologic activity at both craters. On Titan, our predicted sediment fluxes to the coast of Ontario Lacus could build the lake's river delta in as little as ~1,000 y, and our scaling relationships suggest that Titan's rivers may be wider, slope more gently, and transport sediment at lower flows than rivers on Earth or Mars. Our approach provides a template for predicting channel properties remotely for alluvial rivers across Earth, along with interpreting spacecraft observations of rivers on Titan and Mars.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Support care aims to improve the experience of patients. m-health is one of the tools recently developed to promote patient empowerment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the appreciation of an m-health application to enhance prostatectomy path for patients suffering from prostate cancer. METHOD: A prospective monocentric study was conducted in the urology department of the University Hospital of Rennes from February to April 2023. MyCHU application was optimized by integrating information sheets in the postoperative period after prostatectomy on sphincter rehabilitation exercises, erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. The questionnaire used to evaluate the usability of "MyCHU" application was the System Usability Scale (SUS). Semi-structured interviews explored the patients' feelings about the content of the information sheets and the impact on their empowerment regarding sexual disorders. RESULTS: Twelve patients participated in this study and 7 agreed to complete an interview The average SUS score was 75.58, which indicate an high usability. Patients appreciated the fact that the application structured their healthcare pathway by centralizing information. The information sheets were clear and accurate. The impact on their empowerment was positive, with a gain in their ability to take ownership of the therapies. CONCLUSION: The role of digital technology in health care has been growing in recent years. Our study has shown the interest that mobile application can bring to the patient who undergoes prostatectomy. It increases his empowerment and favor the dialogue with his surgeon.

RESUMO

We review measurements of 4He near the superfluid transition in arrangements whereby an array of weak links couple relatively larger, more bulk-like 4He regions. In contrast to experiments which focus on the dependence of the superflow on the chemical potential difference across the links, these studies focus on the specific heat of both the weak links and that of the larger coupled regions, as well as the behavior of the superfluid fraction within the weak links. The data show unexpected results which reflect a very long range coupling as well as modification of the weak link itself due to the proximity to bulk-like helium. One finds that while the three-dimensional correlation length [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text], is involved in these long-range effects, the distance over which these can be seen is of the order of 100 to 1000 times [Formula: see text]. These results call into question our understanding of the meaning of the correlation length at a critical point as the 'range' over which information can propagate. These studies are the first to measure the thermodynamic properties of weak links for a critical system where fluctuations are important. They differ in essential ways with expectations from mean-field considerations. We compare results with other 4He measurements, with superconductors and the theoretical calculations of the Ising model.

RESUMO

A new instrument named COMET for COherent Magnetic scattering Experiments in Transmission using polarized soft X-rays has been designed and built. This high-vacuum setup is placed at the intermediate focal point of the elastic branch of the SEXTANTS beamline at Synchrotron SOLEIL. The main application is in solid state physics, the instrument being optimized for studying material properties using coherent scattering of soft X-rays with an emphasis on imaging, with chemical selectivity, the magnetic domains of artificially nano-structured materials. The instrument's principal features are presented and illustrated through recently performed experiments.

RESUMO

Bedrock river incision drives the development of much of Earth's surface topography, and thereby shapes the structure of mountain belts and modulates Earth's habitability through its effects on soil erosion, nutrient fluxes and global climate. Although it has long been expected that river incision rates should depend strongly on precipitation rates, quantifying the effects of precipitation rates on bedrock river incision rates has proved difficult, partly because river incision rates are difficult to measure and partly because non-climatic factors can obscure climatic effects at sites where river incision rates have been measured. Here we present measurements of river incision rates across one of Earth's steepest rainfall gradients, which show that precipitation rates do indeed influence long-term bedrock river incision rates. We apply a widely used empirical law for bedrock river incision to a series of rivers on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i, where mean annual precipitation ranges from 0.5 metres to 9.5 metres (ref. 12)-over 70 per cent of the global range-and river incision rates averaged over millions of years can be inferred from the depth of river canyons and the age of the volcanic bedrock. Both a time-averaged analysis and numerical modelling of transient river incision reveal that the long-term efficiency of bedrock river incision across Kaua'i is positively correlated with upstream-averaged mean annual precipitation rates. We provide theoretical context for this result by demonstrating that our measurements are consistent with a linear dependence of river incision rates on stream power, the rate of energy expenditure by the flow on the riverbed. These observations provide rare empirical evidence for the long-proposed coupling between climate and river incision, suggesting that previously proposed feedbacks among topography, climate and tectonics may occur.

RESUMO

Branching river networks are one of the most widespread and recognizable features of Earth's landscapes and have also been discovered elsewhere in the Solar System. But the mechanisms that create these patterns and control their spatial scales are poorly understood. Theories based on probability or optimality have proven useful, but do not explain how river networks develop over time through erosion and sediment transport. Here we show that branching at the uppermost reaches of river networks is rooted in two coupled instabilities: first, valleys widen at the expense of their smaller neighbours, and second, side slopes of the widening valleys become susceptible to channel incision. Each instability occurs at a critical ratio of the characteristic timescales for soil transport and channel incision. Measurements from two field sites demonstrate that our theory correctly predicts the size of the smallest valleys with tributaries. We also show that the dominant control on the scale of landscape dissection in these sites is the strength of channel incision, which correlates with aridity and rock weakness, rather than the strength of soil transport. These results imply that the fine-scale structure of branching river networks is an organized signature of erosional mechanics, not a consequence of random topology.

RESUMO

The shorelines of Titan's hydrocarbon seas trace flooded erosional landforms such as river valleys; however, it is unclear whether coastal erosion has subsequently altered these shorelines. Spacecraft observations and theoretical models suggest that wind may cause waves to form on Titan's seas, potentially driving coastal erosion, but the observational evidence of waves is indirect, and the processes affecting shoreline evolution on Titan remain unknown. No widely accepted framework exists for using shoreline morphology to quantitatively discern coastal erosion mechanisms, even on Earth, where the dominant mechanisms are known. We combine landscape evolution models with measurements of shoreline shape on Earth to characterize how different coastal erosion mechanisms affect shoreline morphology. Applying this framework to Titan, we find that the shorelines of Titan's seas are most consistent with flooded landscapes that subsequently have been eroded by waves, rather than a uniform erosional process or no coastal erosion, particularly if wave growth saturates at fetch lengths of tens of kilometers.

RESUMO

We study the thermal relaxation of artificial spin ice with photoemission electron microscopy, and are able to directly observe how such a system finds its way from an energetically excited state to the ground state. On plotting vertex-type populations as a function of time, we can characterize the relaxation, which occurs in two stages, namely a string and a domain regime. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations agree well with the temporal evolution of the magnetic state when including disorder, and the experimental results can be explained by considering the effective interaction energy associated with the separation of pairs of vertex excitations.

RESUMO

A suite of observations suggests that the northern plains of Mars, which cover nearly one third of the planet's surface, may once have contained an ocean. Perhaps the most provocative evidence for an ancient ocean is a set of surface features that ring the plains for thousands of kilometres and that have been interpreted as a series of palaeoshorelines of different age. It has been shown, however, that topographic profiles along the putative shorelines contain long-wavelength trends with amplitudes of up to several kilometres, and these trends have been taken as an argument against the martian shoreline (and ocean) hypothesis. Here we show that the long-wavelength topography of the shorelines is consistent with deformation caused by true polar wander--a change in the orientation of a planet with respect to its rotation pole--and that the inferred pole path has the geometry expected for a true polar wander event that postdates the formation of the massive Tharsis volcanic rise.

RESUMO

The high levels of biodiversity supported by mountains suggest a possible link between geologic processes and biological evolution. Freshwater biodiversity is high not only in tectonically active settings but also in tectonically quiescent montane regions such as the Appalachian Mountains. We show that erosion through different rock types drove allopatric divergence between lineages of the Greenfin Darter (Nothonotus chlorobranchius), a fish species endemic to rivers draining metamorphic rocks in the Tennessee River basin in the United States. In the past, metamorphic rock preferred by N. chlorobranchius was more widespread, but as erosion exposed other rock types, lineages of this species were progressively isolated in tributaries farther upstream, where metamorphic rock remained. Our results suggest a geologic mechanism for initiating allopatric diversification in mountains long after tectonic activity ceases.

RESUMO

Fertile soil known as Amazonian dark earth is central to the debate over the size and ecological impact of ancient human populations in the Amazon. Dark earth is typically associated with human occupation, but it is uncertain whether it was created intentionally. Dark earth may also be a substantial carbon sink, but its spatial extent and carbon inventory are unknown. We demonstrate spatial and compositional similarities between ancient and modern dark earth and document modern Indigenous practices that enrich soil, which we use to propose a model for the formation of ancient dark earth. This comparison suggests that ancient Amazonians managed soil to improve fertility and increase crop productivity. These practices also sequestered and stored carbon in the soil for centuries, and we show that some ancient sites contain as much carbon as the above-ground rainforest biomass. Our results demonstrate the intentional creation of dark earth and highlight the value of Indigenous knowledge for sustainable rainforest management.

RESUMO

Landscapes are shaped by the uplift, deformation and breakdown of bedrock and the erosion, transport and deposition of sediment. Life is important in all of these processes. Over short timescales, the impact of life is quite apparent: rock weathering, soil formation and erosion, slope stability and river dynamics are directly influenced by biotic processes that mediate chemical reactions, dilate soil, disrupt the ground surface and add strength with a weave of roots. Over geologic time, biotic effects are less obvious but equally important: biota affect climate, and climatic conditions dictate the mechanisms and rates of erosion that control topographic evolution. Apart from the obvious influence of humans, does the resulting landscape bear an unmistakable stamp of life? The influence of life on topography is a topic that has remained largely unexplored. Erosion laws that explicitly include biotic effects are needed to explore how intrinsically small-scale biotic processes can influence the form of entire landscapes, and to determine whether these processes create a distinctive topography.

RESUMO

Volcanic ocean islands generally form on swells-seafloor that is shallower than expected for its age over areas hundreds to more than a thousand kilometers wide-and ultimately subside to form atolls and guyots (flat-topped seamounts). The mechanisms of island drowning remain enigmatic, however, and the subaerial lifespan of volcanic islands varies widely. We examine swell bathymetry and island drowning at 14 hotspots and find a correspondence between island lifespan and residence time atop swell bathymetry, implying that islands drown as tectonic plate motion transports them past mantle sources of swell uplift. This correspondence argues strongly for dynamic uplift of the lithosphere at ocean hotspots. Our results also explain global variations in island lifespan, which influence island topography, biodiversity, and climate.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess the level and factors of compliance of carbapenem prescriptions with guidelines and to determine the impact of an antibiotic stewardship team in a university hospital. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five-month prospective study in the intensive care, surgery, and medicine units to measure the compliance of carbapenem prescriptions with guidelines from French scientific societies; compliance was assessed by an infectious disease specialist warned by the pharmacy, and the prescribers' compliance with the infectious disease specialist's advice was then assessed. RESULTS: One hundred and four treatment initiations for 94 patients were included. Prescriptions were mostly empirical (64%), for pulmonary (35%), urinary tract (23%), and intra-abdominal (17%) infections. Prescriptions were mostly made in an intensive care unit (50%), by a junior physician (66%), with the use of imipenem (74%), and were followed by an objective reassessment (80%). Compliance with guidelines (82%) was significantly higher for empirical than documented prescriptions (91% vs 65%, P<0.001). Compliance was higher in intensive care units than medicine units (87% vs 61%, P=0.037). No change in the compliance rate was observed during the study. Compliance with the infectious disease specialist's advice (68%) improved, although not significantly (P=0.066). CONCLUSIONS: Because of a higher than expected compliance of carbapenem prescriptions with guidelines and a lower than expected inclusions in the study, we did not show any impact. The diffusion of guidelines and long-term control of carbapenem prescriptions seem to be possible and necessary in hospitals to limit their ecological impact.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The durability of bioprosthetic valves is limited by structural valve degeneration (SVD) leading to bioprostheses (BPs) stenosis or regurgitation. We hypothesized that a lipid-mediated inflammatory mechanism is involved in the SVD of BPs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighteen Freestyle stentless BP valves were explanted for SVD at a mean time of 5.9 +/- 3 years after implantation and were analysed by immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 65 +/- 8 years and there were 11 male and seven female patients. Two of the 18 BPs had macroscopic calcification, whereas the other valves had minimal or no macroscopic calcification. Tears at the commissures leading to regurgitation was present in 16 BPs. Immunohistochemistry showed the presence of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) and glycosaminoglycans in the fibrosa layer of 13 BPs. Areas with ox-LDL were infiltrated by macrophages (CD68(+)) co-expressing the scavenger receptor CD36 and metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). Zymogram showed the active form of MMP-9 within explanted BPs. EM studies revealed the presence of lipid-laden cells featuring foam cells and fragmented collagen. Nonimplanted control BPs obtained from the manufacturer (n = 4) had no evidence of lipid accumulation, inflammatory cell infiltration or expression of MMP9 within the leaflets. CONCLUSIONS: These results support the concept that lipid-mediated inflammatory mechanisms may contribute to the SVD of BPs. These findings suggest that modification of atherosclerotic risk factors with the use of behavioural or pharmacological interventions could help to reduce the incidence of SVD.

RESUMO

The aim of this cohort study was to compare body composition and regional body fat distribution between children exposed (GDM+) or unexposed (GDM-) in utero to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and to investigate the association with the glycaemic and the insulin profile. Data from 56 GDM+ and 30 GDM- were analysed. Height, weight and waist circumference were measured. Total and regional body composition was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Insulin, glucose and HbA1c were obtained from a fasting plasma sample, and the HOMA-IR index was calculated. anova was performed to compare adiposity measures between GDM+ and GDM-. Associations between the glycaemic and insulin profile and adiposity measures were studied using partial Pearson correlations. Mean age was 6.6 ± 2.3 years. Waist circumference, fat mass percentage, android fat mass, android fat mass percentage and android-to-gynoid fat mass ratio were higher among GDM+, and lean mass percentage was lower (P < 0.05). Among GDM+ children, body mass index (BMI) z score, waist circumference, fat mass percentage, android fat mass percentage and android-to-gynoid fat mass ratio were all positively correlated with HbA1C (r = 0.32-0.43, P < 0.05). Prenatal exposure to GDM is associated with increased total and abdominal adiposity. This increased adiposity observed among GDM+ children is associated with an altered glycaemic profile. This study is registered in the Clinical Trials.gov registry (NCT01340924).

RESUMO

Rivers have eroded the topography of Mars, Titan, and Earth, creating diverse landscapes. However, the dominant processes that generated topography on Titan (and to some extent on early Mars) are not well known. We analyzed drainage patterns on all three bodies and found that large drainages, which record interactions between deformation and erosional modification, conform much better to long-wavelength topography on Titan and Mars than on Earth. We use a numerical landscape evolution model to demonstrate that short-wavelength deformation causes drainage directions to diverge from long-wavelength topography, as observed on Earth. We attribute the observed differences to ancient long-wavelength topography on Mars, recent or ongoing generation of long-wavelength relief on Titan, and the creation of short-wavelength relief by plate tectonics on Earth.
