RATIONALE: Spleen-qi deficiency syndrome, a common weakness syndrome in traditional Chinese medicine, results from insufficient spleen-qi levels. For centuries, ginseng has been relied upon as a traditional Chinese medicine to treat spleen-qi deficiency syndrome. Until now, the mechanism feature of ginseng in treating temper deficiency through intestinal bacteria and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) metabolites has not been fully elucidated. METHODS: This study established a rat model of spleen-qi deficiency via multi-factor compound modeling that involved fatigue injury and a controlled diet. The content of SCFAs between different treatment groups was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. And the 16s rRNA sequencing technology was applied to reveal the effects of ginseng on the intestinal microecological environment of the rats. RESULTS: It was found that the ginseng treatment group exhibited the most remarkable regulatory effect on propionic acid, surpassing all other administration groups. Ginseng increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria and decreased that of harmful bacteria at the genus level in rats with spleen-qi deficiency syndrome. And propionic acid is significantly positively correlated with Lactobacillus level and significantly negatively correlated with uncultured_bacterium_f_Muribaculaceae (p < 0.05). n-Butyric acid is negatively correlated with the Faecalibaculum level (p < 0.01). n-Valeric acid is significantly negatively correlated with the Romboutsia level (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The mechanism of ginseng treatment for spleen-qi deficiency is elucidated from the perspective of gut microbiota and its metabolite SCFAs. It provides a new way for further development and utilization of ginseng and a theoretical basis.

Patients with a spleen-qi deficiency often exhibit dysfunction in the metabolic system. Metabolites are considered the most direct reflection of individual physiological and pathological conditions and represent attractive candidates to provide deep insights into disease phenotypes. This study examines the potential therapeutic mechanism of wild ginseng on spleen-qi deficiency through the analysis of serum and urine metabolomics using rapid-resolution liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The reasons for the superiority of wild ginseng treatment over cultivated ginseng were also analyzed in depth. After wild ginseng intervention, anandamide, urobilinogen, aldosterone, and testosterone glucuronide were significantly reduced in serum. Meanwhile, argininosuccinic acid, L-cysteine, and seven other metabolites were significantly elevated in serum. Nine metabolites, including L-acetylcarnitine, and citrulline were elevated in the urine, and trimethylamine N-oxide, adrenic acid, and 10 other metabolites were reduced. Arginine biosynthesis, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, thiamin metabolism, taurine, and tryptophan metabolism pathways were mainly improved. Further analysis was conducted on the relationship between Lactobacillus and Akkermansia bacteria with metabolites, and it was found that they are mainly related to amino acid metabolites. This study provides strong theoretical support and direction for further explanation of the immune mechanism of wild ginseng and lays the foundation for future studies.

At present, the effect characteristics and mechanism of organic fertilizer replacing chemical fertilizer on organic carbon mineralization and active organic carbon in dryland yellow soil remain unclear. In order to explore the effect of organic fertilizer replacing chemical fertilizer on organic carbon mineralization and active organic carbon in dryland yellow soil, we used soil with no fertilization (CK), only chemical fertilizer (NP), 50% organic fertilizer replacing chemical fertilizer (1/2(NPM)), and 100% organic fertilizer replacing chemical fertilizer (M). We examined the indoor mineralization culture of organic carbon and explored the characteristics of soil organic carbon and the change in active organic carbon under the condition of organic fertilizer replacing chemical fertilizer. The results showed that organic fertilizer replacing chemical fertilizer increased soil pH, organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and C/N. During the culture period, the soil organic carbon mineralization rate of all treatments decreased sharply in the initial stage (2-4 days), decreased slightly in the middle stage (4-20 days), and tended to be stable in the last stage (20-60 days). After fertilization, the cumulative mineralization of soil organic carbon significantly increased by 7.9%-27.7%. Compared with that in the NP treatment, the cumulative mineralization of soil organic carbon decreased by 5.2% in the 1/2(NPM) treatment and increased by 12.2% in the 1/2(NPM) treatment. Before mineralization culture, the substitution of organic fertilizer for chemical fertilizer had no significant effect on soil recalcitrant organic carbon (ROC) but significantly increased the content of microbial biomass carbon (MBC). The content of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was significantly increased in the 1/2(NPM) treatment and decreased in the M treatment. After 60 days of culture, the content of soil active organic carbon in all treatments decreased compared with the initial content, of which MBC decreased the most (30.6%-41.2%). The accumulated mineralization of organic carbon was significantly positively correlated with soil pH and SOC and significantly positively correlated with the initial value of MBC and the change value before and after culture. To summarize, 100% organic fertilizer replacing chemical fertilizer significantly promoted soil organic carbon mineralization and reduced soil organic carbon stability; 50% organic fertilizer replacing chemical fertilizer inhibited soil organic carbon mineralization, which was beneficial to soil sequestration and fertilization; and 50% organic fertilizer replacing chemical fertilizer significantly increased soil active organic carbon content, and MBC was used as the main carbon source in the process of soil organic carbon mineralization.

Using a sample of 615 middle- and high-school students from rural and urban areas of the People's Republic of China, this study tests the effects of coping strategies predicted by Agnew's (1992) general strain theory (GST), in which the impact of strain on delinquency is conditioned by adolescents' social and personal resources. Results provide support for the coping strategies hypotheses posited by GST, in a non-Western culture. Social supports in the three major domains of family, school, and peer group have cross-domain and within-domain buffering effects on the relationships between juvenile delinquency and interpersonal problems in these domains, and moral beliefs have all-domain buffering effects. Girls are more likely to use cross-domain support resources in managing interpersonal problems, whereas boys are more susceptible to delinquent peers in their adaptation to interpersonal strain in all domains. The implications of the findings to intervention were discussed.

Using a sample of 615 middle school and high school students from both rural and urban areas of the People's Republic of China, this study tests the central hypotheses concerning the mediating model in Agnew's general strain theory. The analyses focus on the intervening mechanisms of negative emotions such as anger, resentment, anxiety, and depression that connect exposure to interpersonal strain with delinquent outcomes, including both serious delinquency and minor offenses. The results show that anger mediates the effect of interpersonal strain on violence, resentment mediates the effect of interpersonal strain on nonviolent delinquency, and anxiety and depression have a mediating effect on the relationships between interpersonal strain and minor offenses. The findings are generally consistent with the results of earlier studies in the United States.
