OBJECTIVE: To analyze the immunohistochemical expression of YAP and its correlation with markers involved in cell proliferation and apoptosis in benign epithelial odontogenic lesions. STUDY DESIGN: The sample consisted of 95 cases of odontogenic lesions (25 dentigerous cysts, 30 non-syndromic odontogenic keratocysts, 30 conventional ameloblastomas, and 10 unicystic ameloblastomas) and 10 dental follicles used as normal odontogenic tissue. The histological sections were submitted to immunohistochemistry with YAP, cyclin D1, Ki-67, and Bcl-2 antibodies. Immunoexpression was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively using an adapted method. The collected data were analyzed descriptively and statistically (p ≤ 0.05). RESULTS: The highest YAP expression was observed in odontogenic keratocysts, followed by unicystic ameloblastomas and conventional ameloblastomas, which exhibited moderate immunoreactivity predominantly in peripheral cells. Furthermore, significant differences in YAP immunoexpression were observed between the groups analyzed, with significant positive correlations between YAP and cyclin D1 in dentigerous cysts and unicystic ameloblastomas and between YAP and Ki-67 in unicystic ameloblastomas (p < 0.05). However, there were no statistically significant correlations between YAP and Bcl-2 immunoexpression in the groups studied. CONCLUSION: YAP may influence epithelial cell proliferation in odontogenic cysts and tumors, suggesting its possible participation in the progression of the odontogenic lesions studied.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of sclerotherapy with monoethanolamine oleate (MEO) in a series of cases of benign oral vascular lesions (BOVL). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical records and images were retrieved (2015-2019), and data regarding age, gender, location, size, symptomatology, treatment and outcomes of patients were collected. All patients were diagnosed according to the classification of International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies and received the same treatment protocol (MEO 0.05 g/mL). The collected data were submitted to descriptive analysis and Pearson's chi-square test (p ≤ 0.05). RESULTS: Thirty-seven patients were treated. Most were female (70.3%) aged 9 to 88 years (median, 57.5 ± 17.4 years). Lower lip (54.1%) was the most affected site followed by buccal mucosa (16.2%). Thirty-two lesions were asymptomatic and 35.1% showed ≤ 0.5 cm in size. In 48.6% of the patients, only one application of MEO was performed. Complete regression occurred in 62.2% of cases, whereas 27% showed partial regression. One patient showed hypersensitivity during treatment. There was no significant difference between clinical outcome and age, anatomic site, size, and number of applications of MEO. CONCLUSIONS: Sclerotherapy with MEO is an acceptable and affordable treatment and can provide satisfactory results in BOVL, especially where other treatment options could compromise the esthetic aspects. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: As it is a non-invasive therapy leading, in most cases, to adequate clinical results, safety, and tolerability, sclerotherapy with MEO can be considered an effective treatment for BOVL.

OBJECTIVE: To immunohistochemically characterize a group of oral myofibroblastic lesions (MLs) and to evaluate the ultrastructural features of myofibroblasts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using a tissue microarray technique (TMA), cases of myofibroma (MF), of nodular fasciitis (NF), of desmoplastic fibroma (DF), and of myofibroblastic sarcoma (MS) from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Xochimilco, and a Private Oral Pathology Service in Mexico City were stained with antibodies against alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), H-caldesmon, vimentin, desmin, ß-catenin, CD34, anaplastic lymphoma protein kinase (ALK-1), and Ki-67. RESULTS: Nineteen of the 22 MF cases, 2/5 of the NF cases, 1/10 of the DF cases, and 1/2 of the MS cases were positive for α-SMA. 1/2 of the MS cases were positive for desmin; 6/10 of the DF cases were positive for ß-catenin, and 2 of the MF cases were positive for ALK-1. All of the MLs were positive for vimentin and negative for H-caldesmon and CD-34. The Ki-67 labeling index in all of the 8/22 MF, 3/5 NF, and 2/2 MS cases was ≥10%. For all of the MLs evaluated, ultrastructural analysis revealed spindle-shaped cells containing endoplasmic reticulum and peripheral actin filament bundles. CONCLUSION: In certain myofibroblastic lesions, the use of auxiliary techniques (such as immunohistochemistry) can be critical for differential diagnosis.

Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disease that often affects the anogenital area; oral mucosal lesions are extremely rare. A 52-year-old woman presented for evaluation of an 8-year history of a persistent whitish plaque in the buccal mucosa. Intraoral examination revealed multiple elevated whitish plaques diffusely distributed in the buccal mucosa associated with an area of tissue atrophy. Although both leukoplakia and lichen planus were considered, incisional biopsy and later, full excision confirmed the histopathological diagnosis of oral LS. After 6 months of follow-up, there are no clinical signs of relapse. This case highlights the importance of clinical and histopathological findings for the correct diagnosis and treatment of oral LS.

Odontogenic lesions differ in their rate of recurrence and aggressiveness. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of myofibroblasts and mast cells in odontogenic lesions. Sample consisted of 20 cases each of dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, and solid ameloblastomas. Histologic sections were submitted to immunohistochemistry using anti-α-smooth muscle actin and anti-tryptase antibodies. Myofibroblasts and mast cells were counted at ×400 magnification in 5 and 10 fields, respectively. Myofibroblasts were more frequent in ameloblastomas (24.41), followed by odontogenic keratocysts (16.21) and dentigerous cysts (11.85; P=.002). Granulated and degranulated mast cells were more frequent in dentigerous cysts (7.88 and 8.96, respectively), followed by odontogenic keratocysts (6.53 and 7.08) and ameloblastomas (5.21 and 1.88). The difference was only significant for degranulated mast cells (P<.05). Analysis of the correlation between myofibroblasts and mast cells (granulated and degranulated) revealed a moderate positive correlation only in ameloblastomas (R=0.621, P=.003). Probably, myofibroblasts are related to the biological behavior of the odontogenic lesions studied, particularly their aggressiveness. On the other hand, mast cells seem to be associated with inflammatory processes, which are more frequent in cystic lesions than in benign neoplasms. In addition, mast cells may induce the differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, thus increasing the number of the latter.

OBJECTIVE: Actinic cheilitis (AC) is a potentially malignant lesion caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light. The aim of this research was to analyze the efficacy of diclofenac sodium 3% gel in the treatment of this condition, through clinical follow-up. METHODS: Thirty-one patients diagnosed with AC were instructed to perform a topical application of the gel three times a day for a period of 90 days. In each visit, a digital photography was obtained for verified progress and response to treatment. Two researchers evaluated all images after treatment was completed and assigned the following scores regarding clinical aspect of the lip: 1, complete improvement; 2, partial improvement; 3, no changes; 4, worsening of the clinical condition. In addition, the patients' tolerability to the drug and their satisfaction after treatment were evaluated. RESULTS: Twelve cases abandoned the treatment for reasons unrelated to the study. Ten participants showed total remission of all clinical features of the lesion and three had partial improvement of the characteristics. One participant presented worsening of clinical condition, and in five cases, treatment was discontinued due to development of mild adverse effects at the site of gel application. Regarding satisfaction analyses and tolerability to the drug, from 14 patients who completed treatment without adverse effects or complications, most agreed fully that they were satisfied with the therapy (n = 11) and that the drug was not irritating to the mouth (n = 9). Patients are being monitored without clinical signs of recurrence and/or progression of the lesions. CONCLUSION: Topical application of the drug has provided a convenient and well tolerated in most cases. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Diclofenac sodium gel (3%) may be a promising alternative for treatment of actinic cheilitis.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate cases diagnosed as "oral hemangiomas" based on the immunohistochemical expression of human glucose transporter protein (GLUT-1) and on histopathological features, and to investigate whether the classification proposed by the ISSVA was used correctly to classify these lesions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All cases stored in the archives of an Oral Pathology Service and diagnosed as "oral hemangiomas" were reviewed. Seventy-seven cases were analyzed regarding the expression of GLUT-1. GLUT-1(+) specimens were classified as true infantile hemangioma (IH) and GLUT-1(-) specimens were reclassified based on their histopathological features. The nomenclature of these lesions was evaluated and some cases were reclassified. RESULTS: Only 26 (33.8%) of the specimens were indeed IHs. Among the GLUT-1(-) specimens, 20 (26.0%) were reclassified as pyogenic granulomas (PGs) and 31 (40.2%) as vascular malformations. Considering the previously applied nomenclature, only 47.5% of the cases initially diagnosed as "hemangiomas" were IHs. In the group of "capillary hemangiomas", most cases (56.2%) were PGs. Among the three "cellular hemangiomas", two were PGs and one was IH. Most (88.8%) "cavernous hemangiomas" were vascular malformations. CONCLUSION: Careful and parameterized review of cases of vascular anomalies is necessary using auxiliary tools such as GLUT-1, since the exclusive use of histopathological findings might be insufficient to differentiate some anomalies. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Accurate clinical examination and the use of biomarkers such as GLUT-1 are essential for the diagnosis.

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the immunoexpression of glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1) and angiogenic index between pleomorphic adenomas (PAs), adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs), and mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs) of the salivary glands, and establish associations with the respective subtype/histological grade. Twenty PAs, 20 ACCs, and 10 MECs were submitted to morphological and immunohistochemical analysis. GLUT-1 expression was semi-quantitatively evaluated and angiogenic index was assessed by microvessel counts using anti-CD34 antibody. Higher GLUT-1 immunoexpression was observed in the MECs compared to PAs and ACCs (p = 0.022). Mean number of microvessels was 66.5 in MECs, 40.4 in PAs, and 21.2 in ACCs (p < 0.001). GLUT-1 expression and angiogenic index showed no significant correlation in the tumors studied. Results suggest that differences in biological behavior of the studied tumors are related to GLUT-1. Benign and malignant salivary gland tumors differ in the angiogenic index; however, angiogenesis may be independent of the tumor cell's metabolic demand.

BACKGROUND: Actinic cheilitis (AC) is a chronic inflammatory lesion that in some situations can turn into squamous cell carcinoma of the lip. The molecular mechanisms involved in this process are not yet completely understood. This study aimed to investigate the expression pattern of galectins in actinic cheilitis according to the histopathological grading. METHODS: Immunoexpression of galectin-1, galectin-3, galectin-7, and galectin-9 was semiquantitatively analyzed in 65 cases of actinic cheilitis graded as low risk (n = 40) or high risk (n = 25) of malignant transformation. Association between the location of the galectins in the cellular compartments and histopathological grading was analyzed. RESULTS: Galectin-1 was mainly observed in the cell cytoplasm, and was elevated (score 3) in 60% of cases, regardless of the histopathological grade (P > 0.05). Galectin-3 expression was higher in high-risk group than in the low-risk group (P < 0.05), with a predominant expression in the cytoplasm and nucleus of low-risk (67.5%), and only in the cytoplasm of high-risk cases (60%) (P < 0.05). Galectin-7 expression did not show significant differences between low-risk and high-risk groups (P > 0.05). With respect to galectin-9, 89.2% of cases were positive, showing decrease in median of scores as there was an increase in histological grade (P < 0.001), with predominant expression in the nucleus and cytoplasm. CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first indication of galectins involvement in the pathogenesis and morphologic progression of actinic cheilitis, particularly galectin-3 and galectin-9.

PURPOSE: The peripheral giant cell lesion (PGCL) is a reactive process associated with a local irritating factor that shows low recurrence after treatment, especially if the irritating factor is eliminated. In contrast, the central giant cell lesion (CGCL) presents variable clinical behavior ranging from slow and asymptomatic growth without recurrence to rapid, painful, and recurrent growth. The immunoexpression of glucose transporter (GLUT)-1, GLUT-3, and macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) was compared in CGCL and PGCL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty nonaggressive CGCLs, 20 aggressive CGCLs, and 20 PGCLs were selected for analysis of the immunoexpression of GLUT-1, GLUT-3, and M-CSF in multinuclear giant cells (MGCs) and mononuclear cells (MCs). RESULTS: There was a difference in the percentage of immunoreactive cells of GLUT-1 and GLUT-3 in MC components among lesions and in the intensity of GLUT-1 in MCG and MC components, GLUT-3 in MGC components, and M-CSF in MC components. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that GLUT-1, GLUT-3, and M-CSF could play a role in the pathogenesis of the lesions studied. The stronger immunostaining of these proteins in MCs shows that these cells have greater metabolic activity and osteoclastogenesis, especially in aggressive CGCL. The MCs showed a stronger relation than the MGCs to the pathogenesis of the studied lesions.

An increasing incidence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in individuals younger than 45 years has been observed in recent years. OSCC in younger patients differs in terms of biological behavior and prognosis with the disease being more aggressive than in older patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the immunohistochemical expression of galectins-3 and -7 in 32 cases of OSCC in young patients and to correlate this expression with clinical and morphological parameters. All cases of OSCC of the sample were diagnosed at oncology referral hospitals in Paraíba, Brazil, between 2002 and 2012. Clinical data were obtained from the patient records. Histological malignancy grading systems proposed by Bryne et al. (J Pathol 166:375-381, 1992) and the World Health Organization (In: Pathology and genetics of head and neck tumours: Word Health Organization classification of tumours, 2005) were used for morphological analysis. Immunohistochemistry was performed by the streptavidin-biotin technique using anti-galectin-3 and -7 antibodies. The results were analyzed statistically by the Chi-squared and Fisher exact tests (p < 0.05). Immunoexpression of galectin-3 was observed in 65.6 % of the cases analyzed, but showed no significant association with any of the variables studied (clinical staging; histological malignancy grading systems). Immunoexpression of galectin-7 was observed in 96.9 % of cases and was significantly associated with histological malignancy grading systems (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the results suggest the use of galectin-7 as marker of biological behavior and tumor progression in OSCC in young patients.

PURPOSE: Oral squamous cell carcinomas have the potential for rapid and unlimited growth. Therefore, hypoxic tissue areas are common in these malignant tumors and contribute to cancer progression, therapy resistance, and poor outcomes. The aim of the present study was to analyze the gene product distribution of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1) in cases of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) and to identify a preliminary correlation between these proteins and clinical staging and Brynes's histologic grading system (HGS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample included 57 cases of TSCC. Histologic sections of 3 µm were submitted to the immunoperoxidase method and semiquantitative analysis. The association between HIF-1α and GLUT-1 expression in TSCC and the clinical stage and the HGS of Bryne (1998) was evaluated using the χ(2) test, with the significance level set at 0.05 (α = 0.05). RESULTS: HIF-1α was mainly expressed in the nucleus/cytoplasm of neoplastic cells, most specimens exhibited diffuse staining in neoplastic cells (84.2%), and focal staining was only observed in perinecrotic areas (15.8%). GLUT-1 was expressed in the cytoplasm and membrane of malignant cells, and diffuse staining was observed in all cases. The intensity of HIF-1α expression correlated significantly with clinical stage (P = .011) and HGS (P = .002). A significant association was observed between the distribution of HIF-1α expression and metastasis (P = .040). Immunoexpression of GLUT-1 correlated significantly with clinical stage (P = .002) and HGS (P = .000). GLUT-1 expression in the peripheral island was predominant in most low-grade tumors (78.6%); in the high-grade cases, the expression prevailed in the location center/periphery (55.8%). Comparison of the location of the tumor island in the different histologic grades showed a statistically significant difference (P = .025). CONCLUSION: The expression of HIF and GLUT proteins within TSCC appears to be associated with disease stage, grade, and the presence of metastases. Additional studies are needed to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic uses of these proteins in the treatment of TSCC.

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether the immunohistochemical expression of GLUT-1 and HIF-1α is related to the diagnosis and pathogenesis of oral vascular lesions. STUDY METHODS: Thirty cases each of pyogenic granuloma (PG) and hemangioma were studied. Antibodies against GLUT-1 and HIF-1α were detected by immunoperoxidase staining in 3-µm histological sections, and the results were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, respectively. Positive and negative cells were counted, and the mean number of positive cells was calculated for each case. RESULTS: The initial diagnosis of hemangioma was maintained in only 7 (23%) of the 30 cases studied, which were positive for GLUT-1. The remaining 23 cases were reclassified as vascular malformation (VM) (n = 13) and PG (n = 10) due to the absence of staining. The endothelium of blood vessels was negative for GLUT-1 in all cases initially diagnosed as PG (n = 30). The percentage of HIF-1α-positive cells was higher in cases of PG, followed by hemangiomas and VMs (P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Histological features are not sufficient to establish the correct diagnosis of oral hemangiomas, and an accurate anamnesis is essential in these cases. In addition, these findings demonstrate that vascular lesions express mediators of angiogenesis, HIF-1α, and suggest that his process may play a role in the pathogenesis of vascular.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between the epithelial expression of hMLH1, MDM2, and p63 in lower lip carcinogenesis, comparing the immunostaining of these proteins in cases of actinic cheilitis (AC) and lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). STUDY DESIGN: Forty cases of AC and 40 cases of SCC were studied, both lesions were of lower lip. Histological sections of 3 µm were submitted to immunoperoxidase method, and 1000 cells were counted for immunohistochemical analysis of lesions. The results were analyzed quantitatively, and expression was compared by the Mann-Whitney, Student t-test, or one-way ANOVA, adopting a level of significance of 5%. RESULTS: A higher percentage of epithelial cells expressing hMLH1 was observed in cases of AC without dysplasia or mild dysplasia (721.23 ± 88.116), whereas fewer positive cells were observed in lower lip SSCs (255.03 ± 199.47) when compared to the AC group (P < 0.001). Immunoexpression of MDM2 was higher in SCCs of the lower lip compared with AC (P = 0.019). For p63 protein, the expression was higher in AC than in SCC (P = 0.045). CONCLUSION: The present results showed changes in the immunoexpression of hMLH1, MDM2, and p63 in epithelial cells from premalignant and malignant lip disease, supporting the hypothesis that these alterations are related to the process of lower lip carcinogenesis.

AIM: This study investigated the immunohistochemical expression of hMLH1 and hMSH2 proteins in lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and actinic cheilitis (AC), to contribute to the understanding of the development of lower lip cancer. METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty cases of lower lip AC and SCC were studied. Quantitative immunohistochemical analysis was undertaken by counting 1000 cells (positive and negative) in each lesion. Statistical evaluation included Student's t-test and one-way ANOVA. For SCC and AC, the mean number of hMLH1- and hMSH2-positive cells decreased with advanced stage of the lesion. The largest mean number of immunostained cells was observed in AC cases without dysplasia or with mild dysplasia (hMLH1: 721.23 ± 88.116; hMHS2: 781.50 ± 156.93). Intermediate values were obtained for AC with moderate or severe dysplasia (hMLH1: 532.86 ± 197.72; hMHS2: 611.14 ± 172.48). Lower lip SSCs presented the smallest number of positive cells (hMLH1: 255.03 ± 199.47; hMHS2: 518.38 ± 265.68). A statistically significant difference was observed between groups (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The results support the hypothesis that changes in the immunoexpression of these mismatch proteins are related to the process of carcinogenesis of the lower lip.

INTRODUCTION: Oral epithelial dysplasia (OED) is a potentially malignant lesion characterized by a combination of cytological and architectural anomalies, which are essential for its diagnosis. Galectins are proteins that participate in cell cycle, adhesion and differentiation, apoptosis, and immune responses, as well as in cancer development and progression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aim of this study was to analyze the immunohistochemical expression of galectins-1, -3, and -7 in the OED (21 low risk and 29 high risk) and normal oral mucosa (NOM). The binary grading system was used. RESULTS: Galectin-1 was expressed in the middle/lower third in most OED cases. Nuclear/cytoplasmic staining was observed in most low-risk and high-risk OEDs. All cases of NOM were negative for galectin-1. Galectin-3 was expressed in the middle/lower third in most low-risk cases. Nuclear/cytoplasmic staining was noted in most low-risk and high-risk OEDs. Middle/lower third and in membrane staining was detected in four cases of NOM for galectin-3. Galectin-7 was expressed in the upper/middle third in most of OED cases. Nuclear/cytoplasmic staining predominated in low-risk and high-risk OEDs. Galectin-7 was detected in four cases of NOM, all of them presenting staining in the upper/middle third and in the membrane. CONCLUSION: The differences in the immunoexpression of galactin-1, -3, and -7 between different grades of OEDs suggest the involvement of this protein in the progression of dysplasias.

The calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT), also known as Pindborg tumor, is a rare benign tumor of epithelial origin of locally aggressive behavior, which represents less than 1% of all odontogenic tumors affecting the oral cavity. The lesion usually presents as a nonulcerated painless mass of slow growth, commonly affecting the posterior region of the mandible. Depending on the stages of development, CEOTs may present variable radiographic appearances. To date, a few number of cases affecting the anterior maxillary region have been published in the English-language literature. This article describes an interesting and rare case of an anterior ulcerated maxillary swelling diagnosed as a CEOT based on clinical, cone beam computed tomography and pathologic findings. Functional results were obtained with the surgical approach, and no recurrence of the lesion during a 2-year follow-up period was observed.

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are benign soft tissue neoplasms frequently found in the human body. Head and neck lipomas are relatively uncommon, accounting for 1 to 4% of benign lesions at this location. This 14-year retrospective study analyzed the clinical-pathological features of cases of oral cavity lipomas and their histopathological variants seen at a single oral pathology referral center. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data on age, sex, anatomical location, clinical diagnosis, and histological subtypes were collected from all cases microscopically diagnosed as lipoma. Three previously trained oral pathologists re-evaluated hematoxylin/eosin-stained slides of all selected cases. RESULTS: Among 7,861 oral and maxillofacial lesions diagnosed at the service, 95 (1.2%) were lipomas or their histopathological variants. There was a predominance of female patients (n = 65; 68%); the mean age at diagnosis was 58.8 years (±13.56). We found the following histological subtypes: conventional lipoma, fibrolipoma, spindle cell lipoma, sialolipoma, osteolipoma, chondrolipoma, and intramuscular lipoma. The buccal mucosa was the most affected site. Conventional lipoma and fibrolipoma were the most commonly diagnosed histological variants. Although most lipomas are asymptomatic, large lipomas can occur, reaching a diameter of 4 cm. CONCLUSION: The present study reinforces the importance of careful clinical and histopathological examination in order to obtain an accurate diagnosis and to ensure appropriate treatment.

PURPOSE: In this retrospective study, the aim was to compare individual histopathologic parameters of malignancy between nonmetastatic and metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-two cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue were selected and examined according to the system established by Brandwein-Gensler et al (Am J Surg Pathol 29:167, 2005) and included the pattern of invasion (most to least favorable), lymphocytic infiltration, perineural invasion, risk score, keratinization, eosinophilia, perivascular invasion, and tumor thickness. RESULTS: The least favorable pattern had no association with nodal metastasis (P > .05). The scarcity or density of the lymphocytic infiltration, perineural invasion, and a risk score ≥ 3 were associated with nodal metastasis (P < .05). Keratinization, eosinophilia, perivascular invasion, and tumor thickness had no association with nodal metastasis (P > .05). A significant positive correlation was found between the pattern of invasion and perineural invasion and between the pattern of invasion and tumor thickness (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The scarcity or density of the lymphocytic infiltration, perineural invasion, and histopathologic risk score may be helpful as parameters of histologic malignancy for the evaluation of metastatic and nonmetastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign osteolytic lesions that occur rarely in the jaws. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical, radiographical and pathological features of ABCs of the jaws. A retrospective analysis of the content of a 39-year database, including nine cases of ABCs of the jaws diagnosed from the archives of the Oral Pathology Service. Nine patients (3 males and 6 females), ranging in age from 5 to 33 years were included. Seven (7/9) lesions were located in the mandible and two (2/9) in the maxilla. A painful swelling was the most common clinical finding (n = 4, 4/9). Radiologically, the lesions frequently presented as multilocular (5/9), well defined (4/9), bone expansion and perforation (2/9). Pathological analysis revealed that two cases were associated with central ossifying fibroma and one case with central giant cell lesion. Histomorphology showed a predominance of the solid type (5/9) and of sinusoidal pseudocystic spaces (4/9). Giant cells, osteoid material, calcified material, blood vessels and hemosiderin deposits were observed in 6/9, 7/9, 8/9, 9/9 and 7/9, respectively. The patients with ABCs presented clinical and radiographical features, which often posed a diagnostic dilemma. Knowledge about the most common characteristics of ABCs may contribute to the establishment of a more accurate diagnosis.
