The two doublet histones of Marseillevirus are distantly related to the four eukaryotic core histones and wrap 121 base pairs of DNA to form remarkably similar nucleosomes. By permeabilizing Marseillevirus virions and performing genome-wide nuclease digestion, chemical cleavage, and mass spectrometry assays, we find that the higher-order organization of Marseillevirus chromatin fundamentally differs from that of eukaryotes. Marseillevirus nucleosomes fully protect DNA within virions as closely abutted 121-bp DNA-wrapped cores without linker DNA or phasing along genes. Likewise, we observed that nucleosomes reconstituted onto multi-copy tandem repeats of a nucleosome-positioning sequence are tightly packed. Dense promiscuous packing of fully wrapped nucleosomes rather than "beads on a string" with genic punctuation represents a distinct mode of DNA packaging by histones. We suggest that doublet histones have evolved for viral genome protection and may resemble an early stage of histone differentiation leading to the eukaryotic octameric nucleosome.

The essential histone H3 lysine 79 methyltransferase Dot1L regulates transcription and genomic stability and is deregulated in leukemia. The activity of Dot1L is stimulated by mono-ubiquitination of histone H2B on lysine 120 (H2BK120Ub); however, the detailed mechanism is not understood. We report cryo-EM structures of human Dot1L bound to (1) H2BK120Ub and (2) unmodified nucleosome substrates at 3.5 Å and 4.9 Å, respectively. Comparison of both structures, complemented with biochemical experiments, provides critical insights into the mechanism of Dot1L stimulation by H2BK120Ub. Both structures show Dot1L binding to the same extended surface of the histone octamer. In yeast, this surface is used by silencing proteins involved in heterochromatin formation, explaining the mechanism of their competition with Dot1. These results provide a strong foundation for understanding conserved crosstalk between histone modifications found at actively transcribed genes and offer a general model of how ubiquitin might regulate the activity of chromatin enzymes.

The pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is influenced by a number of variables, including endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER). Thioredoxin domain-containing 5 (TXNDC5) is a member of the protein disulfide isomerase family and acts as an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) chaperone. Nevertheless, the function of TXNDC5 in hepatocytes under ER stress remains largely uncharacterized. In order to identify the role of TXNDC5 in hepatic wild-type (WT) and TXNDC5-deficient (KO) AML12 cell lines, tunicamycin, palmitic acid, and thapsigargin were employed as stressors. Cell viability, mRNA, protein levels, and mRNA splicing were then assayed. The protein expression results of prominent ER stress markers indicated that the ERN1 and EIF2AK3 proteins were downregulated, while the HSPA5 protein was upregulated. Furthermore, the ATF6 protein demonstrated no significant alterations in the absence of TXNDC5 at the protein level. The knockout of TXNDC5 has been demonstrated to increase cellular ROS production and its activity is required to maintain normal mitochondrial function during tunicamycin-induced ER stress. Tunicamycin has been observed to disrupt the protein levels of HSPA5, ERN1, and EIF2AK3 in TXNDC5-deficient cells. However, palmitic acid has been observed to disrupt the protein levels of ATF6, HSPA5, and EIF2AK3. In conclusion, TXNDC5 can selectively activate distinct ER stress pathways via HSPA5, contingent on the origin of ER stress. Conversely, the absence of TXNDC5 can disrupt the EIF2AK3 cascade.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Sandflies are vector insects associated with terrestrial forest ecosystems; in the Ecuadorian Andes, they participate in the transmission of human cutaneous leishmaniasis. This geographical area represents an opportunity to evaluate the role of sandflies as bioindicators of the degree of intervention of tropical humid forest ecosystems (THF) associated with changes in the ecology of the local landscape. METHODS: CDC-light traps were used for collecting adult sandflies in February 2020 in a humid tropical forest within the Chocó Biosphere Reserve. All species were identified using morphological keys. Analysis data about abundance, richness, species accumulation, diversity index, species composition communities, species sex proportion, spatial sandflies environmental, Renyi's Diversity Profile were performed to compare six spatial habitats in Mashpi locality, Ecuador. RESULTS: Sandflies were collected (n-1435); the main species are represented by Trichophoromyia reburra, Nyssomyia trapidoi, Psathyromyia aclydifera, Psychodopygus panamensis and Lutzomyia hartmanni. Only Th. reburra is associated with not intervened forest, while the other three species are associated with intervened forest within Mashpi in the Choco Biosphere Reserve. The secondary forest has major sandflies' richness, while the primary forest exhibits major abundance. INTERPRETATION CONCLUSION: Th. reburra is a sandfly restricted to the Andean Forest and is a bioindicator of the high environmental health quality of the forest, while Ny. trapidoi and Pa. aclydifera are bioindicators of environmental disturbances in the forest. Additionally, Ps. panamensis, Lu. hartmanni and Ny. trapidoi are bioindicators of human impact and the risk of leishmaniasis.

The Astyanax mexicanus complex includes two different morphs, a surface- and a cave-adapted ecotype, found at three mountain ranges in Northeastern Mexico: Sierra de El Abra, Sierra de Guatemala and Sierra de la Colmena (Micos). Since their discovery, multiple studies have attempted to characterize the timing and the number of events that gave rise to the evolution of these cave-adapted ecotypes. Here, using RADseq and genome-wide sequencing, we assessed the phylogenetic relationships, genetic structure and gene flow events between the cave and surface Astyanax mexicanus populations, to estimate the tempo and mode of evolution of the cave-adapted ecotypes. We also evaluated the body shape evolution across different cave lineages using geometric morphometrics to examine the role of phylogenetic signal versus environmental pressures. We found strong evidence of parallel evolution of cave-adapted ecotypes derived from two separate lineages of surface fish and hypothesize that there may be up to four independent invasions of caves from surface fish. Moreover, a strong congruence between the genetic structure and geographic distribution was observed across the cave populations, with the Sierra de Guatemala the region exhibiting most genetic drift among the cave populations analysed. Interestingly, we found no evidence of phylogenetic signal in body shape evolution, but we found support for parallel evolution in body shape across independent cave lineages, with cavefish from the Sierra de El Abra reflecting the most divergent morphology relative to surface and other cavefish populations.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet B (UVB) causes photoaging of the skin, the appearance of wrinkles, spots, and alteration of the skin barrier. The main cells in the most superficial layer of the skin are the keratinocytes; these cells play an important role in protecting this organ. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to investigate the antioxidant activity of the hydrolysates from kafirin to inhibit UVB-induced responses in human keratinocytes cells (HaCaT). METHODS: Kafirin hydrolysates were produced by enzymatic hydrolysis with alcalase. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), in the HaCaT cell line in the presence of UVB and the effects of the hydrolysates against the UVB-induced response were evaluated. Furthermore, the peptides that were generated by hydrolysis were identified in silico using the BIOPEP database. RESULTS: Two protein sequences were identified (α-kafirin and the precursor protein of α-kafirin), in the kafirin extract. A degree of hydrolysis of 18.8% was obtained by hydrolyzing the kafirin extract with alcalase. The kafirin hydrolysates avoided the decrease in endogenous antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, CAT, and GPx reducing the oxidative stress generated by UVB. Using the BIOPEP-UWM database, we found 102 peptide sequences, and it has shown that the peptides have a large amount of hydrophobic amino acids such as proline, alanine, and glutamine, and amino acids with high antioxidant capacity. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the kafirin hydrolysates can be used as antioxidant agents to ameliorate UVB-induced skin keratinocytes cells' response in vitro, providing an alternative against UVB-induced photoaging.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or steatosis is an accumulation of fat in the liver. Increased amounts of non-esterified fatty acids, calcium deficiency, or insulin resistance may disturb endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis, which leads to the abnormal accumulation of misfolded proteins, activating the unfolded protein response. The ER is the primary location site for chaperones like thioredoxin domain-containing 5 (TXNDC5). Glutathione participates in cellular oxidative stress, and its interaction with TXNDC5 in the ER may decrease the disulfide bonds of this protein. In addition, glutathione is utilized by glutathione peroxidases to inactivate oxidized lipids. To characterize proteins interacting with TXNDC5, immunoprecipitation and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry were used. Lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione, inducible phospholipase A2 (iPLA2) and hepatic transcriptome were assessed in the AML12 and TXNDC5-deficient AML12 cell lines. The results showed that HSPA9 and PRDX6 interact with TXNDC5 in AML12 cells. In addition, TXNDC5 deficiency reduced the protein levels of PRDX6 and HSPA9 in AML12. Moreover, lipid peroxidation, glutathione and iPLA2 activities were significantly decreased in TXNDC5-deficient cells, and to find the cause of the PRDX6 protein reduction, proteasome suppression revealed no considerable effect on it. Finally, hepatic transcripts connected to PRDX6 and HSPA9 indicated an increase in the Dnaja3, Mfn2 and Prdx5 and a decrease in Npm1, Oplah, Gstp3, Gstm6, Gstt1, Serpina1a, Serpina1b, Serpina3m, Hsp90aa1 and Rps14 mRNA levels in AML12 KO cells. In conclusion, the lipid peroxidation system and glutathione mechanism in AML12 cells may be disrupted by the absence of TXNDC5, a novel protein-protein interacting partner of PRDX6 and HSPA9.

Squalene is the major unsaponifiable component of virgin olive oil, the fat source of the Mediterranean diet. To evaluate its effect on the hepatic transcriptome, RNA sequencing was carried out in two groups of male Large White x Landrace pigs developing nonalcoholic steatohepatitis by feeding them a high fat/cholesterol/fructose and methionine and choline-deficient steatotic diet or the same diet with 0.5% squalene. Hepatic lipids, squalene content, steatosis, activity (ballooning + inflammation), and SAF (steatosis + activity + fibrosis) scores were analyzed. Pigs receiving the latter diet showed hepatic squalene accumulation and twelve significantly differentially expressed hepatic genes (log2 fold change < 1.5 or <1.5) correlating in a gene network. These pigs also had lower hepatic triglycerides and lipid droplet areas and higher cellular ballooning. Glutamyl aminopeptidase (ENPEP) was correlated with triglyceride content, while alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), neutralized E3 ubiquitin protein ligase 3 (NEURL3), 2'-5'-oligoadenylate synthase-like protein (OASL), and protein phosphatase 1 regulatory inhibitor subunit 1B (PPP1R1B) were correlated with activity reflecting inflammation and ballooning, and NEURL3 with the SAF score. AFP, ENPEP, and PPP1R1B exhibited a remarkably strong discriminant power compared to those pathological parameters in both experimental groups. Moreover, the expression of PPP1R1B, TMEM45B, AFP, and ENPEP followed the same pattern in vitro using human hepatoma (HEPG2) and mouse liver 12 (AML12) cell lines incubated with squalene, indicating a direct effect of squalene on these expressions. These findings suggest that squalene accumulated in the liver is able to modulate gene expression changes that may influence the progression of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

Besides direct mortality, wind farms also affect aerial fauna by modifying their communities, reducing species diversity and richness through disturbance. During three consecutive years, we used mist nets and acoustic recorders, and conducted carcass searches, to characterize the assemblage of bat species and to estimate bat mortality at two nearby wind farms sited <5 km apart in a highly biodiverse region. We asked whether the diversity, richness and evenness of the assemblages varied yearly, predicting it would decrease through time. Richness and evenness did not change, but the diversity of species recorded acoustically, 96% being aerial insectivores, was significantly lower the third year. We estimate 4 - 15.7 fatalities/MW/year by wind farm, with 63% of species found as carcasses being aerial insectivores. We found >40% of dissimilarity in the species composition of bat assemblages between wind farms despite the short distance between them, with species turnover accounting for more than half of the dissimilarity every year. Similarly, species turnover accounted for >15% of the dissimilarity in the composition of the assemblage of live bats (captured and recorded acoustically) and the assemblage obtained through carcass searches. Our findings suggest that nearby wind farms impact bat communities differentially and aerial insectivores disproportionally. Long term, multi-method surveys are needed to characterize bat communities in highly diverse regions and to evaluate the post-construction effects that wind farms have on them.

Automatic image description, also known as image captioning, aims to describe the elements included in an image and their relationships. This task involves two research fields: computer vision and natural language processing; thus, it has received much attention in computer science. In this review paper, we follow the Kitchenham review methodology to present the most relevant approaches to image description methodologies based on deep learning. We focused on works using convolutional neural networks (CNN) to extract the characteristics of images and recurrent neural networks (RNN) for automatic sentence generation. As a result, 53 research articles using the encoder-decoder approach were selected, focusing only on supervised learning. The main contributions of this systematic review are: (i) to describe the most relevant image description papers implementing an encoder-decoder approach from 2014 to 2022 and (ii) to determine the main architectures, datasets, and metrics that have been applied to image description.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, the importance of training healthcare professionals in nontechnical skills using effective methodologies has been increasingly recognised as a means of preventing clinical errors in the practice of health care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of educational interventions on nontechnical skills in the emergency medical services and/or critical care unit settings. METHODS: A systematic search was carried out in the PubMed, SCOPUS, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases according to predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. After the initial search, 7952 records were selected after duplicates removed. Finally, a selection of 38 studies was included for quantitative analysis. Separate meta-analyses of standardised mean changes were carried out for each outcome measure assuming a random-effects model. Cochran's Q-statistic and I2 index were applied to verify study heterogeneity. Weighted analyses of variance and meta-regressions were conducted to test the influence of potential moderators and funnel plots using Duval and Tweedie's trim-and-fill method, and Egger's regression test were used to examine publication bias. RESULTS: All the variables analysed had a significant effect size, with the exception of situational awareness (d+ = -0.448; 95% confidence interval [CI] = -1.034, 0.139). The highest mean effect size was found for knowledge (d+ = -0.925; 95% CI = -1.177, -0.673), followed by the mean effect sizes for global nontechnical skills (d+ = -0.642; 95% CI = -0.849, -0.434), team nontechnical skills (d+ = -0.606; 95% CI = -0.949, -0.262), and leadership nontechnical skills (d+ = -0.571; 95% CI = -0.877, -0.264). Similar mean effect sizes were found for attitude (d+ = -0.406; 95% CI = -0.769, -0.044), self-efficacy (d+ = -0.469; 95% CI = -0.874, -0.064), and communication nontechnical skills (d+ = -0.458; 95% CI = -0.818, -0.099). Large heterogeneity among the standardised mean changes was found in the meta-analyses (I2 > 75% and p < .001), except for self-efficacy where I2 = 58.17%, and there was a nonstatistical result for Cochran's Q. This great variability is also reflected in the forest plots. DISCUSSION: The use of simulation interventions to train emergency and critical care healthcare professionals in nontechnical skills significantly improves levels of knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, and nontechnical skills performance.

Agriculture is under transformation in sub-Saharan Africa where millions still do not have access to a healthy diet. Policy makers in this region should find ways to accelerate agricultural transformation while increasing access to healthy diets. Optimizing agriculture's public budget stands out as a handy option. By combining a dynamic computable general equilibrium model and a multi-criteria decision-making technique, and applying them in the context of Ethiopia, this paper points to an important trade-off that policy makers should keep in mind. An optimal allocation of agriculture's public budget aimed at increasing agri-food output, creating off-farm jobs and reducing rural poverty, which are agricultural transformation objectives, will help to reduce the cost of a healthy diet, allowing around 2 million more Ethiopians to afford it. This number could even be higher should policy makers allocate the budget optimally aiming at only lowering the cost of a healthy diet, but at the cost of reducing household income and slowing down transformation.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, huge improvements have been made in the context of sequencing genomic data under what is called Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). However, the DNA reads generated by current NGS platforms are not free of errors, which can affect the quality of downstream analysis. Although error correction can be performed as a preprocessing step to overcome this issue, it usually requires long computational times to analyze those large datasets generated nowadays through NGS. Therefore, new software capable of scaling out on a cluster of nodes with high performance is of great importance. RESULTS: In this paper, we present SparkEC, a parallel tool capable of fixing those errors produced during the sequencing process. For this purpose, the algorithms proposed by the CloudEC tool, which is already proved to perform accurate corrections, have been analyzed and optimized to improve their performance by relying on the Apache Spark framework together with the introduction of other enhancements such as the usage of memory-efficient data structures and the avoidance of any input preprocessing. The experimental results have shown significant improvements in the computational times of SparkEC when compared to CloudEC for all the representative datasets and scenarios under evaluation, providing an average and maximum speedups of 4.9[Formula: see text] and 11.9[Formula: see text], respectively, over its counterpart. CONCLUSION: As error correction can take excessive computational time, SparkEC provides a scalable solution for correcting large datasets. Due to its distributed implementation, SparkEC speed can increase with respect to the number of nodes in a cluster. Furthermore, the software is freely available under GPLv3 license and is compatible with different operating systems (Linux, Windows and macOS).

Cerebral palsy (CP) causes neurological disability in early childhood. Hypoxic-ischaemic injury plays a major role in its aetiology, nevertheless, genetic and epigenetic factors may contribute to the clinical presentation. Mutations in ADD3 (encoding γ-adducin) gene have been described in a monogenic form of spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy (OMIM 601568). We studied a 16-year-old male with spastic diplegia. Several investigations including neurometabolic testing, brain and spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and CGH-Array were normal. Further, clinical genetics assessment and whole exome sequencing (WES) gave the diagnosis. We generated an animal model using Drosophila to study the effects of γ-adducin loss and gain of function. WES revealed a biallelic variant in the ADD3 gene, NM_016824.5(ADD3): c.1100G > A, p.(Gly367Asp). Mutations in this gene have been described as an ultra-rare autosomal recessive, which is a known form of inherited cerebral palsy. Molecular modelling suggests that this mutation leads to a loss of structural integrity of γ-adducin and is therefore expected to result in a decreased level of functional protein. Pan-neuronal over-expression or knock-down of the Drosophila ortholog of ADD3 called hts caused a reduction of life span and impaired locomotion thereby phenocopying aspects of the human disease. Our animal experiments present a starting point to understand the biological processes underpinning the clinical phenotype and pathogenic mechanisms, to gain insights into potential future methods for treating or preventing ADD3 related spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative symptoms and pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) are common in women. However, there is no evidence of differences in incidence and severity among different age groups. We evaluated whether adverse postoperative symptoms were more common in younger than in older women after LC. METHODS: One hundred and fifty premenopausal (mean age 37.6 ± 3.6 y) and 145 postmenopausal women (59 ± 5.2 y) were included in this retrospective cohort study. Clinical and anthropometric parameters were analyzed. Study endpoints were the incidences of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and pain, and the additional analgesics and antiemetics needed after surgery. RESULTS: Body mass index was normal in 42.7% of patients in the younger group and 64.8% in the older group (P < 0.001). Reported pain was more frequent and intense in the younger group throughout the study period (P < 0.01). Additional narcotics were required in 18% of premenopausal versus 7.6% of postmenopausal women (P = 0.001), and the doses used to reduce pain were higher for premenopausal women (P = 0.02). PONV was more frequent in the younger group at 1 and 6 h after surgery (P < 0.005). Rescue antiemetics were required in 29 premenopausal and 13 postmenopausal women (P = 0.01). Hospital stay was shorter for the older patients (P = 0.01). Minor morbidity was observed in both groups (0.7% and 2.1%). There was no mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Early PONV and pain after LC were more frequent in premenopausal women, who also required more rescue analgesic and antiemetic medication.

BACKGROUND: A new technique in plastic surgery termed Osteogenesis Modulation is described. This technique uses a surgically implanted, battery-operated medical device to deliver customized electrical pulses to produce mandibular bone growth. This device was designed to be a temporary, nonpermanent implant. The purpose of this study was to review both the safety and efficacy of Osteogenesis Modulation. METHODS: This study comprises two phases. Phase I involved experimental technology development and animal experiments. Phase II included technology development for clinical use and a clinical trial. In Phase II, four patients with a diagnosis of mandibular hypoplasia and microgenia underwent surgical implantation of the novel medical device over the chin bone. Once a satisfactory change of contour of mandibular bone was achieved, the devices were removed. In all patients, the devices were left in place for 12 months, then surgically removed under local anesthesia. Preoperative and long-term postoperative cephalometric controls were done. RESULTS: In all patients, symmetrical mandibular bone growth was observed with good-to-excellent aesthetic results. The overall follow-up period was 39 months. Cephalometric controls taken 3 to 6 months after the device removal showed an average increase in mandible length of 5.26mm (range, 2.83-7.60mm) CONCLUSIONS: Preliminary clinical results suggest that Osteogenesis Modulation is a safe, minimally invasive, and effective alternative treatment for the correction of mandibular hypoplasia in selected cases. Squalene is a natural bioactive triterpene and an important intermediate in the biosynthesis of sterols. To assess the effect of this compound on the hepatic transcriptome, RNA-sequencing was carried out in two groups of male New Zealand rabbits fed either a diet enriched with 1% sunflower oil or the same diet with 0.5% squalene for 4 weeks. Hepatic lipids, lipid droplet area, squalene, and sterols were also monitored. The Squalene administration downregulated 9 transcripts and upregulated 13 transcripts. The gene ontology of transcripts fitted into the following main categories: transporter of proteins and sterols, lipid metabolism, lipogenesis, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. When the results were confirmed by RT-qPCR, rabbits receiving squalene displayed significant hepatic expression changes of LOC100344884 (PNPLA3), GCK, TFCP2L1, ASCL1, ACSS2, OST4, FAM91A1, MYH6, LRRC39, LOC108176846, GLT1D1 and TREH. A squalene-enriched diet increased hepatic levels of squalene, lanosterol, dihydrolanosterol, lathosterol, zymostenol and desmosterol. Strong correlations were found among specific sterols and some squalene-changed transcripts. Incubation of the murine AML12 hepatic cell line in the presence of lanosterol, dihydrolanosterol, zymostenol and desmosterol reproduced the observed changes in the expressions of Acss2, Fam91a1 and Pnpla3. In conclusion, these findings indicate that the squalene and post-squalene metabolites play important roles in hepatic transcriptional changes required to protect the liver against malfunction.

Previous studies in Leishmania mexicana have identified the cytoskeletal protein KHARON as being important for both flagellar trafficking of the glucose transporter GT1 and for successful cytokinesis and survival of infectious amastigote forms inside mammalian macrophages. KHARON is located in three distinct regions of the cytoskeleton: the base of the flagellum, the subpellicular microtubules, and the mitotic spindle. To deconvolve the different functions for KHARON, we have identified two partner proteins, KHAP1 and KHAP2, which associate with KHARON. KHAP1 is located only in the subpellicular microtubules, whereas KHAP2 is located at the subpellicular microtubules and the base of the flagellum. Both KHAP1 and KHAP2 null mutants are unable to execute cytokinesis but are able to traffic GT1 to the flagellum. These results confirm that KHARON assembles into distinct functional complexes and that the subpellicular complex is essential for cytokinesis and viability of disease-causing amastigotes but not for flagellar membrane trafficking.

Intraspecific ecological and morphological polymorphism can promote ecological speciation and the build-up of reproductive isolation. Here, we evaluate correlations among morphology, trophic ecology and genetic differentiation between two divergent morphs (elongate and deep-body) of the fish genus Astyanax in the San Juan River basin in Central America, to infer the putative evolutionary mechanism shaping this system. We collected the two morphs from three water bodies and analysed: (1) the correlation between body shape and the shape of the premaxilla, a relevant trophic morphological structure, (2) the trophic level and niche width of each morph, (3) the correspondence between trophic level and body and premaxillary shape, and (4) the genetic differentiation between morphs using mitochondrial and nuclear markers. We found a strong correlation between the body and premaxillary shape of the morphs. The elongate-body morph had a streamlined body, a premaxilla with acuter angles and a narrower ascending process, and a higher trophic level, characteristic of species with predatorial habits. By contrast, the deep-body morph had a higher body depth, a premaxilla with less acute angles and a broader trophic niche, suggesting generalist habits. Despite the strong correlation between morphological and ecological divergence, the morphs showed limited genetic differentiation, supporting the idea that morphs may be undergoing incipient ecological speciation, although alternative scenarios such as stable polymorphism or plasticity should also be considered. This study provides support for the role of ecological factors promoting diversification in both lake and stream-dwelling freshwater fish.
