RESUMO

The optimal geometries of vector phase matching are determined for the cases of second harmonic generation, sum frequency generation, and difference frequency generation in a number of orthorhombic nonlinear optical crystals: KTP, KTA, KB5, K N b O 3, LBO, CBO, and LRB4. The extreme surface method was used to define the wave vector directions of highest possible generation efficiency. As shown, in a significant number of cases vector phase matching ensures higher efficiencies than the scalar one.

RESUMO

The main purposes of this work are designing new hybrid structures based on alumina nanoporous membranes with specific metallosupramolecular structure as well as studies of their usefulness in nonlinear optics (NLO). The NLO studies of the hybrid material is performed on the basis of two methods: the first by the Maker fringe technique, where the second harmonic generation (SHG) signal is recorded by rotating the sample; and the second by SHG imaging microscopy, where the SHG signal is collected point by point on the sample surface. The enhanced SHG signals were obtained without the use of the corona poling method needed during the experiment on thin films in our previous works and clearly shows the efficiency of hybrid materials based on nanoporous membranes as promising materials in devices developed based on NLO.

RESUMO

Here we present a newly synthesized bifunctional organic chromophore with appealing spectroscopic and nonlinear optical features. The positions of absorption and emission maxima of the dye vary with increasing solvent polarity and exhibit positive solvatochromism. The determined change in the dipole moment upon excitation based on the Bilot and Kawski theory is 5.94 D, which corresponds to the intermolecular displacement of a charge equal to 1.24 Å. An investigated organic-based system represents a significant, repeatable, and stable over time optical signal modulation in the manner of the refractive index value. Its magnitude is varied both by optical pumping intensity as well as by external frequency modulation, which indicates that such system is an alluring and alternative core unit for optoelectronic devices and complex networks. Then, the same active system, due to the nonresonant mechanism of higher harmonics of light inducement, can provide second and third harmonic signals. According to the introduced laser line spatial modifications (parallel or perpendicular polarization directions), it is resulted in output SHG signal with magnitude varied about 100%. Its magnitude is noticeably small; however, to construct sensitive optical sensors or infrared indicators, such feature may guarantee satisfying circumstances.

RESUMO

Second-order nonlinear optics is the base for a large variety of devices aimed at the active manipulation of light. However, physical principles restrict its occurrence to non-centrosymmetric, anisotropic matter. This significantly limits the number of base materials exhibiting nonlinear optics. Here, we show that embedding chromophores in an array of conical channels 13 nm across in monolithic silica results in mesoscopic anisotropic matter and thus in a hybrid material showing second-harmonic generation. This nonlinear optics is compared to the one achieved in corona-poled polymer films containing the identical chromophores. It originates in the confinement-induced orientational order of the elongated guest molecules in the nanochannels. This leads to a non-centrosymmetric dipolar order and hence to a nonlinear light-matter interaction on the sub-wavelength, single-pore scale. Our study demonstrates that the advent of large-scale, self-organized nanoporosity in monolithic solids along with the confinement-controllable orientational order of chromophores at the single-pore scale provides a reliable and accessible tool to design materials with a nonlinear meta-optics.

RESUMO

We describe herein the synthesis and characterization of a thiophene-based donor-acceptor system, namely (E)-2-(4-nitrostyryl)-5-phenylthiophene (Th-pNO2 ), which was prepared under Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons conditions. The UV/Vis absorption bands, including the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) band, were fully assigned using DFT and TD-DFT computations. The results of both efficient third-order nonlinear optical properties and light-amplification phenomena are presented. Investigations of photoinduced birefringence (PIB) in optical Kerr effect (OKE) experiments showed a great potential for this particular compound as an efficient, fully reversible, and fast optical switch. Time constants for the observed trans-cis-trans molecular transitions are in the range of microseconds and give a competitive experimental result for the well-known and exploited azobenzene derivatives. Random lasing (RL) investigations confirmed that this organic system is potentially useful to achieve strong light enhancement, observed as a multimode lasing action. Both RL and OKE measurements indicate that this material is a representative of thiophene derivatives, which can be utilized to fabricate fast all-optical switches or random lasers (light amplifiers).

RESUMO

An organogelator based on the Disperse Red nonlinear optical chromophore was synthesized according to a simple and efficient three-step procedure. The supramolecular gel organization leads to xerogels which display a spontaneous second harmonic generation (SHG) response without any need for preprocessing, and this SHG activity appears to be stable over several months. These findings, based on an intrinsic structural approach, are supported by favorable intermolecular supramolecular interactions, which promote a locally non-centrosymmetric NLO-active organization. This is in sharp contrast with most materials designed for SHG purposes, which generally require the use of expensive or heavy-to-handle external techniques for managing the dipoles' alignment.

RESUMO

In this article we present a new all-optical method to measure elastic constants connected with twist and bend deformations. The method is based on the optical Freedericksz threshold effect induced by the linearly polarized electro-magnetic wave. In the experiment elastic constants are measured of commonly used liquid crystals 6CHBT and E7 and two new nematic mixtures with low birefringence. The proposed method is neither very sensitive on the variation of cell thickness, beam waist or the power of a light beam nor does it need any special design of a liquid crystal cell. The experimental results are in good agreement with the values obtain by other methods based on an electro-optical effect.

RESUMO

The present study investigates the usage of a novel natural dye derived from red algae of Morocco in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) for the first time. The main pigments responsible for sensitizing the semiconductor TiO2 coatings in the red algae were identified as phycoerythrin, carotenoid, and chlorophyll. The efficiency of a DSSC made from red algae was compared to that of a solar cell made from chlorophyll alone. The photovoltaic performance of the DSSC was evaluated through photocurrent density to photovoltage (J-V) characteristic analysis, and the efficiency was found to be 0.93%. To gain insights into its behavior, the absorbance and photoluminescence in a broad range were studied. Both absorbance and photoluminescence exhibited a broad-spectrum range. Additionally, electronic properties, such as HOMO, LUMO, energy gap, and chemical reactivity parameters, were studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

RESUMO

In this work, a novel experimental investigation of photoluminescence properties of Znq2 thin films co-doped with different concentrations of DCM were performed. The thin films were successfully deposited on glass substrates with different compositions, under high vacuum, by using the vacuum evaporation technique. For all compositions, the photoluminescence was measured at room temperature and also at low temperature in a wide range from 77 to 300 K with a step of 25 K in a high vacuum. The lifetime of the sample studied in real time was also measured using the decay time technique. The results obtained confirm that the doping influences the intensity of the DCM photoluminescence and also shows a complete energy transfer occurred from Znq2 to DCM which may have shifted the photoluminescence peak from Znq2 to the orange wavelength region which is related to DCM. The lifetime of the sample studied in real time was about 4.47 ns for Znq2 and while all the other samples showed two decay time components. As a result, the doping influences the optical properties of Znq2 and makes it a potential candidate for optoelectronic applications.

RESUMO

This article covers selected properties of organic-inorganic thin films of hybrid perovskites with the summary formulas CH3NH3MI3, where M = Pb, Cd, Ge, Sn, Zn. The paper discusses not only the history, general structure, applications of perovskites and the basics of the theory of nonlinear optics, but also the results of experimental research on their structural, spectroscopic, and nonlinear optical properties. The samples used in all presented studies were prepared in the physical vapor deposition process by using co-deposition from two independent thermal sources containing the organic and inorganic parts of individual perovskites. Ultimately, thin layers with a thickness of the order of nanometers were obtained on glass and crystalline substrates. Their structural properties were characterized by atomic force microscopy imaging. Spectroscopic tests were used to confirm the tested films' transmission quality and determine previously unknown physical parameters, such as the absorption coefficient and refractive index. Experimental results of the nonlinear optical properties were obtained by studying the second and third harmonic generation processes and using initial sample polarization in the so-called Corona poling process. The obtained experimental results allowed us to determine the second- and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of the tested materials.

RESUMO

The synthesis of nanosized organic benzil (C6H5CO)2 crystals within the mesoporous SiO2 host matrix was investigated via X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and ab initio lattice dynamics analysis. Combining these methods, we have proved that the main structural properties of benzil nanocrystals embedded into SiO2 host membranes with pore diameters of 6.0, 7.8, 9.4, and 13.0 nm are preserved compared to a bulk benzil crystal. Space confinement has an insignificant impact on the lattice vibrational properties of benzil crystals implanted into the host matrices. The ab initio lattice dynamics calculation of the phonon spectrum in the Brillouin zone center shows the mechanical and dynamical stability of benzil lattice, revealing very low optical frequency of 11 cm-1 at point Γ.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a series of organic-inorganic nanocomposite materials combining the mesoporous silica (PS) and benzil (BZL) nanocrystals embedded into its nanochannels (6.0-13.0 nm in diameter) by capillary crystallization. One aims to design novel, efficient nonlinear optical composite materials in which inactive amorphous host PS-matrix provides a tubular scaffold structure, whereas nonlinear optical functionality results from specific properties of the deposited guest BZL-nanocrystals. A considerable contraction of the BZL melt during its crystallization inside the silica nanochannels results in a formation of the texture consisting of (221)- and (003)-oriented BZL nanoclusters (22 nm in length), separated by voids. Specificity of the textural morphology similarly to the spatial confinement significantly influences the nonlinear optical features of composite PS:BZL materials being explored in the second harmonic generation (SHG) experiment. The light polarization anisotropy of the SHG response appears to be considerably reduced at channel diameters larger than 7 nm apparently due to the multiple scattering and depolarization of the light on randomly distributed and crystallographically oriented BZL-nanoclusters. The normalized SHG response decreases nonlinearly by more than one order of magnitude as the channel diameter decreases from 13.0 to 6.0 nm and vanishes when spatial cylindrical confinement approaches the sizes of a few molecular layers suggesting that the embedded BZL clusters indeed are not uniformly crystalline but are characterized by more complex morphology consisting of a disordered SHG-inactive amorphous shell, covering the channel wall, and SHG-active crystalline core. Understanding and controlling of the textural morphology in inorganic-organic nanocrystalline composites as well as its relationships with nonlinear optical properties can lead to the development of novel efficient nonlinear optical materials for the light energy conversion with prospective optoelectronic and photonic applications.

RESUMO

The dependency of CO2 reduction rate in acetonitrile-Bu4NClO4 solution on cathodes, which were modified by laser induction of a copper surface, was studied. The topography of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) → grooves → spikes was successively formed by a certain number of pulses. It was proved that for a higher number of laser pulses, the surface area of the copper cathode increases and preferred platy orientation of the copper surface on [022] crystallografic direction and larger fluence values increase. At the same time, the content of copper (I) oxide on the surface of the copper cathode increases. Also, the tendency to larger fluency values is observed. It promotes the increase of cathodic current density for CO2 reduction, which reaches values of 14 mA cm-2 for samples with spikes surface structures at E = - 3.0 V upon a stable process.

RESUMO

We present the nonlinear absorption investigation of an electroactive ligand and two ruthenium and iron metal complexes under 532 nm, 30 ps laser excitation, by the "open aperture" Z-scan technique. Significant nonlinear optical parameters have in all cases been measured, while the nonlinear attribute has been found to change from saturable to reverse saturable absorption between the initial ligand and its complexes.

RESUMO

An optical control of many working optoelectronic systems (real-time sensors, optical modulators, light amplifiers, or phase retarders) giving efficient optical gain or remote signal modulation is currently included as scientifically and industrially interesting. In here, an oxazolone derivative as the multifunctional organic system is given in this contribution. The molecule possesses a stilbene group and an oxazolone heteroatomic ring, which implies effective refractive index manipulation and multimode lasing action, respectively. The light modulation is repeatable and stable, also in the hundreds of Hz regime. On the other hand, the amplified optical signal can be easily generated by an external optical pumping source. Thus, signal control is fully available, as is read-in and read-out of the information in real time. Furthermore, this third-order, nonlinear, optical phenomenon using a third harmonic generation technique was also observed. We discovered that only by changing the energy and time regime of the supplied optical signal is the optical or nonlinear optical response observed. Two heteroenergetic molecular states (trans (E) and cis (Z)) can efficiently operate in modern multifunctional optoelectronic systems, which can provide and generate an optical signal. Such functionalities are commonly used in all-optical photonic switchers and logic gates and can be utilized in optical-core networks and computers.

RESUMO

Theoretical and experimental investigations of the linear and nonlinear optical properties of composite materials based on the (Z)-4-(1-cyano-2-(5-methylfuran-2-yl)vinyl)benzonitrile molecule named as A, the (Z)-4-(2-(benzofuran-2-yl)-1-cyanovinyl)benzonitrile named as B and the (Z)-4-(2-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)-1-cyanovinyl)benzonitrile molecule named as C embedded into poly(1-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) polymer matrix were performed. The electronic and optical properties of A, B, and C molecules in a vacuum and PVK were calculated. The guest-host polymer structures for A, B, and C molecules in PVK were modeled using molecular dynamics simulations. The spatial distribution of chromophores in the polymer matrix was investigated using the intermolecular radial distribution (RDF) function. The reorientation of A, B, and C molecules under the influence of the external electric field was investigated by measuring the time-dependent arrangement of the angle between the dipole moment of the chromophore and the external electric field. The polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities of tested compounds have been calculated applying the DFT/B3LYP functional. The second- and third-order nonlinear optical properties of the molecule/PVK thin film guest-host systems were investigated by the Maker fringes technique in the picosecond regime at the fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm. The experimental results were confirmed and explained with theoretical simulations and were found to be in good agreement. The modeling of the composites in volumetric and thin-film form explains the poling phenomena caused by the external electric field occurring with the confinement effect.

RESUMO

In this study, new photonics architectures and aurone-based methacrylic polymers were designed and synthesized for their optical and nonlinear optical properties. The studied polymeric thin films were deposited by spin coating method. SHG and THG effects were measured via Maker fringe technique in transmission mode and determined using theoretical models. Investigations involved the theoretical quantum chemical calculation of dipole moments, frontier molecular orbital HOMO and LUMO energies, and first (ß) and second (γ) hyperpolarizabilities. We determined the impact of the substitution in the para position of the phenyl ring and at the dipole moment of the chromophore on the nonlinear optical properties of the investigated polymers. The presented theoretical and experimental studies provide important information with respect to the design of methacrylic-based polymeric thin film devices and supplement existing knowledge with respect to their nonlinear behaviour.

RESUMO

A series of methacrylic styrylquinoline polymers have been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic and nonlinear optical (NLO) investigations. The NLO properties of studied polymer compounds in the form of thin films prepared by a spin coating method have been investigated by means of second and third harmonic generation via Maker fringe setup with a laser source at 1064 nm and a pulse duration of 30 ps. The results show strong second harmonic signal dependence on polarization configurations. This second harmonic generation (SHG) response was enhanced by UV-irradiation at 366 nm and doping by ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) (100 nm), while the opposite effect was achieved for a third harmonic generation experiment. Thus, values of second and third order nonlinear susceptibilities were determined by theoretical calculations based on comparative models. The remarkable NLO results presented in this paper expose potential optoelectronic and photonic applications.

RESUMO

In this study, the thin films were produced by using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique from gold (Au) nanoparticles deposited on two kinds of substrates under different argon (Ar) gas pressure. Microscope glass slides and silicon (100) wafers were used as amorphous and crystal substrates. The films were deposited under 2 × 10-3 mbar, 1 × 10-2 mbar, 2 × 10-2 mbar argon (Ar) ambient gas pressure. Effect of the background gas pressure on the plasma plume of the ablated Au nanoparticles was investigated in details. Morphology of Au nanoparticle thin films was investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique. Absorption spectra of Au nanoparticles were examined by using UV-Vis spectrometry. Extinction spectra of Au nanoparticles were calculated by using metallic nano particles boundary element method (MNPBEM) simulation programme. Both experimental spectra and simulation data for Au nanoparticles were obtained and compared in this work. It was concluded that they are also in good agreement with literature data. The measurements and the simulation results showed that localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peaks for Au nanoparticles were located in the near infrared region (NIR) because of the larger size of the disk-like shape of Au nanoparticles, and the near-field coupling between Au nanoparticles. It was demonstrated that as the ambient gas (Ar) pressure was increased, the size and the density of Au nanoparticles on the substrate were decreased and the LSPR peak shifts toward the short wavelength region in the spectrum. This shift has been explained by the changes in the morphology of produced thin films.

RESUMO

The optical control of anisotropy in materials is highly advantageous for many technological applications, including the real-time modulation of another light signal in photonic switches and sensors. Here, we introduce three thiophene derivatives with a donor-acceptor structure, which feature different positions of an electron-acceptor nitrile group, and both photoalignment and luminescence properties. Quantum chemical calculations highlight the presence of trans-forms stable at room temperature and metastable cis-isomers. Besides photoluminescence peaked at 440-460 nm and 0.4 ns lifetime, the three nonlinear optical chromophores exhibit photoinduced anisotropy of the refractive index closely depending on the specific molecular structure, with higher values of birefringence at lower driving signal being obtained for ortho substitution of the nitrile group. All-optical modulation of an external light beam at rates of hundreds of hertz is demonstrated in the fluorescent systems. This finding opens an interesting route to multispectral photonic switches embedded in the active layers of light-emitting devices.
