RESUMO

Faba bean is an important legume crop. The genetic diversity among faba bean genotypes is very important for the genetic improvement of target traits. A set of 128 fab bean genotypes that are originally from Egypt were used in this study to investigate the genetic diversity and population structure. The 128 genotypes were genotyped using the Single Primer Enrichment Technology (SPET) by which a set of 6759 SNP markers were generated after filtration. The SNP markers were distributed on all chromosomes with a range extending from 822 (Chr. 6) to 1872 (Chr.1). The SNP markers had wide ranges of polymorphic information content (PIC), gene diversity (GD), and minor allele frequency. The analysis of population structure divided the Egyptian faba bean population into five subpopulations. Considerable genetic distance was found among all genotypes, ranging from 0.1 to 0.4. The highly divergent genotype was highlighted in this study and the genetic distance among genotypes ranged from 0.1 and 0.6. Moreover, the structure of linkage disequilibrium was studied, and the analysis revealed a low level of LD in the Egyptian faba bean population. A slow LD decay at the genomic and chromosomal levels was observed. Interestingly, the distribution of haplotype blocks was presented in each chromosome and the number of haplotype block ranged from 65 (Chr. 4) to 156 (Chr. 1). Migration and genetic drift are the main reasons for the low LD in the Egyptian faba bean population. The results of this study shed light on the possibility of the genetic improvement of faba bean crop in Egypt and conducting genetic association analyses to identify candidate genes associated with target traits (e.g. protein content, grain yield, etc.) in this panel.

PURPOSE: To assess the correlation between primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study leveraging the global patient database of TriNetX Research Network. PARTICIPANTS: The study included 44 359 patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) with POAG and 4 393 300 patients with DM without any glaucoma ≥ 18 years of age. Propensity score matching harmonized the cohorts to 39 680 patients each, covering diagnoses from January 1, 2005, to January 1, 2023. METHODS: We analyzed data using specific International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) codes for DM and glaucoma. We matched the cohorts using propensity score matching, adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, blood markers, relevant medical history, and ophthalmic service use. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was the first-time occurrence of DR, including nonproliferative DR (NPDR) and proliferative DR (PDR), in patients with DM with and without glaucoma at 1-, 5-, and 10-year intervals from their individual index dates. RESULTS: At 10 years, patients with T1DM with POAG exhibited a heightened risk for any DR (adjusted risk ratios [RRs], 4.12; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.05-5.57, P < 0.0001) and PDR (RR, 7.02; 95% CI, 3.62-13.61, P < 0.0001). Patients with T2DM and POAG also faced an increased 10-year risk for any DR (RR, 2.47; 95% CI, 2.28-2.68, P < 0.0001) and PDR (RR, 3.82; 95% CI, 3.09-4.70, P < 0.0001). The combined association of POAG on DR risk in those with T1DM and T2DM at 10 years was found to be significantly higher among patients with POAG (5.45%) compared with those without glaucoma (2.12%) (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 2.33; 95% CI, 2.14-2.53). The cumulative incidence of DR was significantly higher in the POAG group compared with nonglaucoma counterparts after a decade (log-rank P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings underscore a substantial association between POAG and DR development in both T1DM and T2DM patients, emphasizing the need for vigilant screening and comprehensive management in glaucomatous patients with DM to mitigate the risk of DR. Future research should delve into elucidating the causal mechanisms driving these observed associations. BACKGROUND: In livestock, identifying the physiological and reproductive stages is valuable in guiding management decisions related to nutrition, veterinary procedures, and breeding programs. To achieve this goal, a cohort of Barki ewes in this research underwent observation across three pivotal physiological conditions: pre-pregnancy, late pregnancy, and early lactation. Blood samples were collected to investigate the changes in serum metabolic profile as well as gene expression pattern of cytokines and antioxidants markers during these stages. RESULTS: Our results showed that during late pregnancy, there was a significant (P < 0.05) increase in red blood cells (11.9 ± 0.5 1012/L), hemoglobin (10.8 ± 0.4 g/dl) and neutrophils count (7 ± 0.1 109/L) with significant decrease (P < 0.05) of total white blood cell count (9.1 ± 0.05 109/L). The packed cell volume (%) and monocyte count showed a significant (P < 0.05) decrease during both late pregnancy and early lactation stages. The serum concentrations of glucose, cholesterol, GSH, GPx, SOD and catalase displayed significant (P < 0.05) decrease during late pregnancy and early-lactation. Notably, during late pregnancy, there was a significant (P < 0.05) increase in the serum concentrations of albumin, globulin, urea, IGF-1, and malondialdehyde with significant decrease (P < 0.05) of total protein (4.9 ± 0.08 g/dl). Additionally, during early lactation, there was a significant (P < 0.05) increase in the serum levels of non-esterified fatty acids, triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxin (T4). The gene expression profiles of cytokines (IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and NFKB) were decreased in the ewes during late pregnancy compared to pre-pregnant and early lactation stages. In addition, the expression profile of antioxidant genes (SOD, CAT, GPX, and Nrf2) was significantly upsurged in the non-pregnant ewes compared to late pregnancy and early lactation ones. CONCLUSIONS: The results concluded that different physiological status significantly affects the blood metabolic profile and gene expression pattern in Barki sheep. Our findings can be helpful in monitoring animal health and applying in breeding programs of Barki sheep under harsh environmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Phytochemical compounds can modify the rumen microbiome and improve rumen fermentation. This study evaluated the impact of supplementation with tannin and an herbal mixture containing ginger (Zingiber officinale), garlic (Allium sativum), Artemisia (Artemisia vulgaris), and turmeric (Curcuma longa) on the rumen fermentation and microbiota, and histology of rumen tissue of goats. Eighteen Shami male goats were divided into three groups (n = 6): non-supplemented animals fed the basal diet (C, control); animals fed basal diet and supplemented with condensed tannin (T); and animals fed basal diet and supplemented with herbal mixture (HM). Each animal received a basal diet composed of Alfalfa hay and a concentrate feed mixture. RESULTS: Group HM revealed higher (P < 0.05) rumen pH, total volatile fatty acids (VFA), acetic, propionic, isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, and valeric. Principal Co-ordinate analysis (PCoA) showed that rumen microbial communities in the control group and supplemented groups were distinct. The supplementation increased (P < 0.05) the relative abundances of phylum Bacteroidota and Proteobacteria and declined (P < 0.05) Firmicutes and Fibrobacterota. Additionally, the dominant genus Prevotella and Rikenellaceae RC9 gut group were increased (P < 0.05) and the family Ruminococcaceae was declined (P < 0.05) due to the supplementation. The supplementation decreased (P < 0.05) the archaeal genus Methanobrevibacter and increased (P < 0.05) Candidatus Methanomethylophilus. Tannin supplementation in T group shortened the rumen papillae. CONCLUSIONS: The results revealed that the herbal mixture might be used to alter the rumen microbiota to improve rumen fermentation.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the quality & reliability, technical quality, and readability of patient-targeted online information on idiopathic intracranial hypertension. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we searched Google and Bing search engines for the terms "idiopathic intracranial hypertension" and "pseudotumor cerebri." We evaluated the first 50 search outcomes for each search term. Peer-reviewed articles, targeted advertisements, book chapters, videos, personal blogs, websites intended for healthcare professionals, and non-English websites were excluded. Websites were classified as institutional or private. Two independent reviewers assessed each website for 1) quality and reliability using DISCERN, Health on the Net Code of Conduct (HONcode), and JAMA criteria and 2) technical quality based on 11 criteria. Readability was evaluated using 6 measures (Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease score and grade level, Gunning Fog, Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (Smog) index, Coleman-Liau index, and automated readability index). RESULTS: Sixty-three websites (37 institutional) were included. The mean scores for the DISCERN, HONcode, and JAMA criteria were 3.6 ± 1 (1-4.8; 1: worse, 5: best), 10.3 ± 2.8 (2-16; 0: worse, 16: best), and 2 ± 1.3 (0-4; 0: worse, 4: best), respectively. The mean technical quality score was 0.8 ± 0.1 (0.5-1). The mean Flesch-Kincaid grade level score was 8.9 ± 1.8 (3.3-13.3). For Flesch-Kincaid grade level, 47 (74.6%) websites scored a grade level of 10 or less. For Gunning Fog Score, 35 websites (55.6%) scored from 7.3 to 10.8. For the Smog Index, 46 (73%) websites scored 5.7-8. The mean Coleman Liau Index was 16 ± 2.1 (9.6-22.2). For the automated readability index, 30 (50.7%) websites scored less than the eighth grade. No statistically significant difference was present between institutional and private websites except for JAMA, which scored higher in private websites (2.4 vs 1.7, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that online information on idiopathic intracranial hypertension/pseudotumor cerebri for patients generally demonstrates moderate to good quality and reliability. Although most websites maintain credible technical quality, the readability exceeds recommended levels for the average American reader. This may impede understanding, emphasizing the need for future improvements.

BACKGROUND: In elderly patients with external full-thickness rectal prolapse (EFTRP), the exact differences in postoperative recurrence and functional outcomes between laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy (LVMR) and perineal stapler resection (PSR) have not yet been investigated. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study on 330 elderly patients divided into LVMR group (n = 250) and PSR (n = 80) from April 2012 to April 2019. Patients were evaluated before and after surgery by Wexner incontinence scale, Altomare constipation scale, and patient satisfaction questionnaire. The primary outcomes were incidence and risk factors for EFTRP recurrence. Secondary outcomes were postoperative incontinence, constipation, and patient satisfaction. RESULTS: LVMR was associated with fewer postoperative complications (p < 0.001), lower prolapse recurrence (p < 0.001), lower Wexner incontinence score (p = 0.03), and lower Altomare's score (p = 0.047). Furthermore, LVMR demonstrated a significantly higher surgery-recurrence interval (p < 0.001), incontinence improvement (p = 0.019), and patient satisfaction (p < 0.001) than PSR. Three and 13 patients developed new symptoms in LVMR and PSR, respectively. The predictors for prolapse recurrence were LVMR (associated with 93% risk reduction of recurrence, OR 0.067, 95% CI 0.03-0.347, p = 0.001), symptom duration (prolonged duration was associated with an increased risk of recurrence, OR 1.131, 95% CI 1.036-1.236, p = 0.006), and length of prolapse (increased length was associated with a high recurrence risk (OR = 1.407, 95% CI = 1.197-1.655, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: LVMR is safe for EFTRP treatment in elderly patients with low recurrence, and improved postoperative functional outcomes. Fishmeal substitution with sustainable feed sources is highly essential towards sustainable production. This study aimed to investigate the effects of substituting fishmeal (FM) with Daphnia magna biomass meal (DBM) or zooplankton biomass meal (ZBM) on growth performance, liver and intestinal histology, gut bacterial abundance and stress tolerance of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, fry. Nile tilapia fry (0.23 ± 0.04 g) were randomly assigned to five groups of three replicates. The control diet comprised 300 g/kg FM, and the FM was substituted with DBM or ZBM at levels of 25% and 50% (DBM-25, DBM-50, ZBM-25 and ZBM-50 respectively) in the other experimental diets. The experiment lasted 56 days in 1.5 m3 concrete tanks. The results revealed that weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) significantly (p ≤ 0.035 and 0.025 respectively) improved with a polynomial response with a peak at 25% ZBM and a linear increase with DBM up to 50% of FM. Histometric indices of the distal intestine showed improvements (p ≤ 0.001) in villus height, villus width, crypt depth and muscle thickness of fish fed DBM or ZBM compared to the control. In the meantime, there were no histological abnormalities in the liver sections. The replacement of FM with DBM or ZBM could modulated gut bacterial abundance, including total bacterial count, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Lactobacillus sp. The fish-fed DBM or ZBM-containing diets had higher (p ≤ 0.05) tolerances to salinity stress than the control group. In conclusion, DBM or ZBM could replace FM up to 50% and 25%, respectively with improved fish growth performance, FCR, gut histology and tolerance to salinity stress.

The current study aimed to evaluate growth performance, digestive enzyme activities, antioxidant status, nonspecific immune response and intestinal histological status of red tilapia fed Daphnia meal (DM) as a substitute for fishmeal (FM). Hybrid red tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus × Oreochromis aureus) fry (0.54 ± 0.05 g fish-1) was allocated in nylon haba cages (100 fry m-3) for 2 weeks as an acclimation period. The fish were divided into five groups (three replicates each). The experimental diets were prepared by replacing FM with DM at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% respectively. The results indicated that fish fed increasing levels of DM (50%-75%) experienced high growth performance, feed utilisation and protein content. The activities of digestive enzymes were significantly increased in all groups fed DM diets compared to the control. The antioxidant balance was improved by decreasing the level of malondialdehyde and increased the total antioxidant capacity, catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase activities in the liver of fish fed DM. The nonspecific immune response, including lysozyme, alkaline phosphatase activities and total protein level improved significantly with increasing FM substitution levels by DM in a dose-dependent manner. Histometric analysis of the intestinal wall revealed an increase in the villus length, crypts depth and goblet cells number in groups fed DM meal up to 50% substitution level compared to other treatments. It may be concluded from results of this feeding trial that in the aquaculture of hybrid tilapia, FM may be substituted with up to 50% DM without compromising intestinal health, growth performance and immune status of the fish.

Understanding the genomic features of livestock is essential for successful breeding programs and conservation. This information is scarce for local goat breeds in Egypt. In the current study, genomic regions with selection signatures were identified as well as runs of homozygosity (ROH), genomic inbreeding coefficients (FROH) and fixation index (FST) were detected in Egyptian Nubian, Damascus, Barki and Boer goat breeds. A total of 46,268 SNP markers and 337 animals were available for the genomic analyses. On average, 145.44, 42.02, 87.90 and 126.95 ROHs were detected per individual in the autosomal genome of the respective breeds. The mean accumulative ROH lengths ranged from 46.5 Mb in Damascus to 360 Mb in Egyptian Nubian. The short ROH segments (< 2 Mb) were most frequent in all breeds, while the longest ROH segments (> 16 Mb) were exclusively found in the Egyptian Nubian. The highest average FROH was observed in Egyptian Nubian (~ 0.12) followed by Boer (~ 0.11), while the lowest FROH was found in Damascus (~ 0.05) and Barki breed (~ 0.03). The estimated mean FST was 0.14 (Egyptian Nubian and Boer), 0.077 (Egyptian Nubian and Barki), 0.075 (Egyptian Nubian and Damascus), 0.071 (Barki and Boer), 0.064 (Damascus and Boer), and 0.015 (Damascus and Barki), for each pair of breeds. Interestingly, multiple SNPs that accounted for high FST values were observed on chromosome 6 in regions harboring ALPK1 and KCNIP4. Genomic regions overlapping both FST and ROH harbor genes related to immunity (IL4R, PHF23, GABARAP, GPS2, and CD68), reproduction (SPATA2L, TNFSF12, TMEM95, and RNF17), embryonic development (TCF25 and SOX15) and adaptation (MC1R, KDR, and KIT), suggesting potential genetic adaptations to local environmental conditions. Our results contribute to the understanding of the genetic architecture of different goat breeds and may provide valuable information for effective preservation and breeding programs of local goat breeds in Egypt.

PURPOSE: To quantify the risk of pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (pCME) in fellow-eye cataract surgery and to determine risk factors, including prior first-eye pCME. DESIGN: Retrospective, clinical database study. PARTICIPANTS: Patients undergoing bilateral nonsimultaneous cataract surgeries in 8 UK National Health Service clinical centers between July 2003 and March 2015. METHODS: We excluded patients with a history of diabetic macular edema (DME) or CME and perioperative topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use in either eye. We calculated the overall risk of pCME and used Poisson model with robust estimation of standard error to identify potential risk factors for pCME in the fellow eye. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The risk of postoperative clinical pCME in the fellow eye. RESULTS: A total of 54 209 patients were included. The mean age was 74.6 ± 10.4 years, and 38.8% were male. The fellow eye developed pCME in 544 patients (1%). The risk of fellow-eye pCME among patients without first-eye pCME was 0.9%. However, the risk of fellow-eye pCME among those with first-eye pCME was 10.7%. In the fully adjusted model, we found that the risk factors for the development of fellow-eye pCME were first-eye pCME (RR, 8.55, 95% confidence interval [CI], 6.19-11.8), epiretinal membrane (ERM) (RR, 4.1, CI, 2.63-6.19), history of retinal vein occlusion (RR, 2.94, CI, 1.75-4.93), diabetes without history of DME (RR, 2.08, CI, 1.73-2.5), advanced cataract (RR, 1.75, CI, 1.16-2.65), prostaglandin analogue use preoperatively (RR, 1.49, CI, 1.13-1.97), and male sex (RR, 1.19, CI, 1.0-1.41). CONCLUSIONS: History of pCME in the first-operated eye is the strongest independent risk factor for the development of pCME in the fellow eye. Our findings may guide clinicians in counseling patients on the risk of pCME before performing cataract surgery in the fellow eye and help in identifying high-risk patients who may benefit from prophylactic therapy. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cataract surgery in eyes of patients with short axial length (AL) can be technically challenging and is associated with a high risk of intra- and postoperative complications. Several technical and surgical strategies have been proposed to optimize the visual outcome and decrease the rate of surgical complications and it is important to understand their applications in these cases. RECENT FINDINGS: Traditional intraocular lens (IOL) measurement formulas in eyes with short AL have reduced reliability. Novel formulas such as the Kane formula provide a better refractive prediction. Surgery can be difficult in short eyes due to the crowdedness of the anterior chamber (AC) and the associated scleral abnormalities increasing the risk of uveal effusion. Surgical techniques such as prophylactic scleral incisions, limited pars plana anterior vitrectomy, and modified hydrodissection, have been shown to facilitate surgery in extremely short eyes and decrease the rate of operative complications. Although cataract surgery improves vision in these cases, short AL and shallow AC have been associated with worse visual outcomes. SUMMARY: Newer 4 th generation IOL formulas have improved the refractive outcomes of cataract surgery in eyes with short AL. There are multiple evolving surgical strategies for optimizing surgery in these eyes. However, studies on the surgical and visual outcomes of cataract surgery in eyes with short AL are limited by their design and sample size. With further research and continued clinical experiences, we hope to develop evidence-based algorithms for the management of these complex cases.

METHODS: Cataract surgery data of 217,556 eyes was extracted from the electronic medical records of 8 ophthalmic centers in the United Kingdom from July 2003 to March 2015. A total of 88,774 eyes without ocular co-pathologies were grouped eyes according to AL (mm): short AL (< 22), average AL (22-26; reference group), and long AL (> 26). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: We analyzed visual acuity (VA) outcomes at 4 weeks, 4-12 weeks, and 12-24 weeks postoperatively, as well as the incidence of posterior capsular rupture (PCR), torn iris (TI), cystoid macular edema (CME), and retinal detachment (RD). RESULTS: Mean pre-operative VA (logMAR) was the worst in eyes with long AL compared to average and short AL eyes (VA 0.59 vs. 0.58 and 0.56; p < 0.001). However, post-operative VA at 4-12 weeks was slightly better in the long AL group (0.14 in short and average AL; 0.12 in long AL, p < 0.001). We observed an increased odds of TI in the short AL group (OR 2.09, 95% CI 1.60-2.75). There was increased risk of RD in long AL eyes (p < 0.001). However, PCR and CME rates were not different. CONCLUSION: In the absence of any coexisting ocular pathology, AL alone did not have an impact on VA improvement or the risk of encountering PCR or CME. The risk of TI was greater in the short AL group, and the risk of RD was higher in the long AL group.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To describe a novel technique for direct perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL)-silicone oil exchange that aims to reduce the inherent risk of intraoperative intraocular pressure spike. METHODS: We use the conventional setup for passive PFCL-silicone exchange, but intentionally create a mismatch between the passive PFCL aspiration and the active silicone injection that favors the PFCL extrusion. This is achieved by converting one port to a large gauge one-23 or 20-gauge. RESULTS: We did not note the occurrence of high intraocular pressure spikes with this technique as noted by disk pallor or attenuated vessels. CONCLUSION: A hybrid 23/25-gauge technique for direct PFCL-silicone oil exchange is safe and reduces the risk of intraoperative intraocular pressure spike.

PURPOSE: To report on results of pars plana vitrectomy with ILM peeling in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and concomitant macular hole (MH) and to assess for preoperative associated conditions related to this type of RRD. METHODS: Patients undergoing surgical repair for RRD between 2014 and 2021 were reviewed, and subjects with concomitant, non-causal, macular hole were identified. We studied post-operative macular status, retinal reattachment rate and visual acuity. RESULTS: Over 532 eyes operated on for RRD, 11 (2.06%) had a concurrent non-causal macular hole. Preoperative PVR B or superior was recorded in 86 eyes (16.6%) of the entire cohort and in 6 eyes (54.54 %) with RRD and concomitant MH (p=0.00001). Severe hypotony with choroidal detachment was present in 15 eyes (2.81%) of the entire cohort and in 3 eyes (27.27%) with RRD and concomitant MH (p=<0.00001). CONCLUSIONS: RRD with concomitant MH is an infrequent association. Retinal reattachment and anatomical hole closure can be achieved in most of cases but despite this fact, functional recovery is usually not good. Preoperative PVR is a more frequent finding in this group of patients, as well as severe hypotony with choroidal detachment.

PURPOSE: To study the treatment patterns, visual outcomes and safety profile of intravitreal dexamethasone implant (IDI) used for the treatment of macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion. METHODS: Up to 2 years of routinely collected anonymized data within electronic medical record systems were remotely extracted from 16 centers. The outcome measures include visual outcome, number of injections, and safety measures, including the rate of intraocular pressure (IOP) rise, frequency of IOP-lowering medication usage, and cataract surgery rates. RESULTS: The study included 688 eyes (44.4%) with central retinal vein occlusion and 862 eyes (55.6%) with branch retinal vein occlusion; 1,250 eyes (80.6%) were treatment naive and 28% (275/989) had high IOP or were on IOP-lowering medications before IDI use. It was found that 31% (476) of eyes received two injections, and 11.7% (182) and 3.7% (58) of eyes received three and four injections, respectively. The mean baseline Snellen visual acuity improved from 20/125 to 20/40 after the first injection. The probability of cataract surgery was 15% at 24 months. The proportion of eyes with ≥10 mmHg change from baseline was higher in phakic (14.2%) compared with pseudophakic eyes (5.4%, P = 0.004). Three eyes required IOP filtering surgery (0.2%). CONCLUSION: The visual results of IDI in eyes with macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion in the real world are comparable to those of clinical trial setting. Increased IOP in eyes with preexisting ocular hypertension or glaucoma can be controlled with additional medical treatment. Intraocular pressure rise with IDI may be more frequent in phakic than in pseudophakic eyes.

The aim of the present study was to detect the FOXP3 gene polymorphisms in Barki sheep at a variable region covering exon 13, intron 13 and the coding sequence in exon 14 and to test the association of these polymorphisms with growth traits. 122 Barki lambs were phenotyped for various growth traits, viz., birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), pre-weaning daily gain in weight (ADG1), post-weaning daily gain in weight (ADG2) and marketing bodyweight (MW). The polymerase chain reaction - single-strand conformational polymorphisms (PCR-SSCP) and DNA sequencing methods were used to identify the genetic variants in the FOXP3 gene. The associations between the variation in FOXP3 gene and growth traits were tested using a general linear model. Two variants (F1 and F2 with gene frequencies of 0.64 and 0.36, respectively), and three genotypes (F1F1, F1F2 and F2F2 with frequencies of 0.37, 0.53 and 0.10, respectively) were detected. The association of FOXP3 genotype was significant (p < 0.05) with ADG2 and MW. It is concluded that FOXP3 genotype might be helpful for sheep breeders to produce fast-growing lambs. However, further studies are needed in a large population to confirm the association we found.

To date, very little research on drought tolerance has been conducted at the seedling stage in winter wheat. In this study, two types of traits, namely tolerance and recovery traits, associated with drought tolerance were scored in biparental mapping population (BPP) and association mapping population (A-set). The results of this study revealed no or weak significant correlation between the two types of traits. Based on GWAS and QTL mapping analyses, all QTLs associated with recovery traits were completely different from those associated with tolerance traits except one QTL in each population that was found to be associated with one tolerance trait and one recovery trait. The analysis of SNP and gene networks confirmed the results of combined GWAS and QTL mapping. One SNP marker located on the 2B chromosome (S2B_26494801) was found to be associated with recovery traits in both populations. The results of this study provided new information on understanding and improving drought tolerance in winter wheat.

Due to the advances in DNA markers, kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) markers could accelerate breeding programs and genetically improve drought tolerance. Two previously reported KASP markers, TaDreb-B1 and 1-FEH w3, were investigated in this study for the marker-assisted selection (MAS) of drought tolerance. Two highly diverse spring and winter wheat populations were genotyped using these two KASP markers. The same populations were evaluated for drought tolerance at seedling (drought stress) and reproductive (normal and drought stress) growth stages. The single-marker analysis revealed a high significant association between the target allele of 1-FEH w3 and drought susceptibility in the spring population, while the marker-trait association was not significant in the winter population. The TaDreb-B1 marker did not have any highly significant association with seedling traits, except the sum of leaf wilting in the spring population. For field experiments, SMA revealed very few negative and significant associations between the target allele of the two markers and yield traits under both conditions. The results of this study revealed that the use of TaDreb-B1 provided better consistency in improving drought tolerance than 1-FEH w3.

A 120-day growth trial was completed to assess rearing water quality and fish performance in terms of growth, feed efficacy, digestive enzymes, immunity, and antioxidant activity of seabass fed an experimental diet (ED) supplemented with commercial wood charcoal (WC) and activated wood charcoal (AC). Three levels (0, 10, and 20 g) of WC and AC were administered, representing five treatments: control (CD) fish-fed ED without additives, (WC-1) fish-fed ED containing 10 g kg-1 WC, (WC-2) fish-fed ED containing 20 g kg-1 WC, (AC-1) fish-fed ED containing 10 g kg-1 AC, and (AC-2) fish-fed ED containing 20 g kg-1 AC. Three hundred fish (60.12 ± 0.20 g/fish) were stocked in 15 cement tanks (4.0 m × 2.0 m × 1.2 m, water volume 5 m3 each) at 20 fish/tank and a daily feed ration of 3% of body weight. Results revealed significant improvements with increased growth variables (final weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate), decreased FCR, and decreased ammonia levels and heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Fe, Mn, and Zn) content in rearing water, muscle, and liver with fish fed WC and AC supplemented diets. Furthermore, considerable improvements in digestive enzymes, immunity, and antioxidant activity, with enhanced kidneys, liver, intestines, gills, and spleen. Fish fed the WC-1 diet had a higher final weight (171.90 g), better FCR (1.25), and improved internal organs than the other groups.

PURPOSE: Combined anterior and posterior ring (APR) fixation is classically performed in Tile B2 and C1 injuries to achieve superior biomechanical stability. However, the posterior ring (PR) is the main weight bearing portion that is responsible for weight transmission from the upper parts of the body to the lower limbs through the sacrum and the linea terminalis. It is hypothesized that isolated PR fixation can achieve comparable radiological and clinical outcomes to APR fixation. Therefore, we conducted this study to compare the two fixation principles in managing Tile B2 and C1 injuries. METHODS: Our study included 20 patients with Tile B2 injuries and 20 patients with Tile C1 injuries. This study was a randomized control single-blinded study via computerized random numbers with a 1:1 allocation by using random block method. The study was performed at a level one trauma center. A total of 40 patients with Tile B2 and C1 injuries underwent combined APR or isolated PR fixation (Group A and B, respectively). Matta & Tornetta radiological principles and Majeed pelvic scoring system were used for the assessment of primary outcomes and postoperative complications. Secondary outcomes included operative time, amount of blood loss, intraoperative assessment of reduction, need of another operation, length of hospital stay, ability to weight bear postoperatively and pain control metrics. We used student t-test to compare the difference in means between two groups, and Chi-square test to compare proportions between two qualitative parameters. We set the confidence interval to 95% and the margin of error accepted to 5%. So, p ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The mean follow-up duration was 18 months. The operative time (mean difference 0.575 h) and the intraoperative blood loss (mean difference 97.5 mL) were lower in Group B. Also, despite the higher frequency of rami displacement before union in the same group, there were no significant differences in terms of radiological outcome (excellent outcome with OR = 2.357), clinical outcome (excellent outcome with OR = 2.852) and postoperative complications assessment (OR = 1.556) at last follow-up. CONCLUSION: The authors concluded that isolated PR fixation could favorably manage Tile B2 and C1 pelvic ring injuries with Nakatani zone II pubic rami fractures and intact inguinal ligament. Its final radiological and clinical outcomes and postoperative complications were comparable to combined APR fixation, but with less morbidity (shorter operation time, lower amount of blood, and no records of postoperative wound infection).
