RESUMO

Mine tailings represent a great environmental concern due to their high contents of heavy metals. Cultivation analysis of microbiota of Tarnowskie Góry (Poland) mine tailing showed the occurrence of bacteria with colony-forming units as low as 5.7 × 104 per one gram of dried substrate. Among 110 bacterial isolates identified by a combination of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and 16S rRNA gene sequencing, phylum Actinobacteria was dominant, followed by Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. Extremely high levels of heavy-metal resistance were observed in Arthrobacter spp., particularly for zinc (500 mg/L), lead (1500 mg/L), and cadmium (1000 mg/L). On the other hand, Staphylococcus spp. showed high tolerance to several antibiotics tested, especially ampicillin, partly due to blaZ gene presence. Due to the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, mine tailings are not the cause of heavy-metal contamination only, but also a source of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and thus may represent a serious risk for public health.

The article presents the results of research carried out using a water model of a refining ladle for the Fe-Si ferroalloys treatment. These studies were aimed at improving the efficiency of refining and homogenization of liquid Fe-Si ferroalloy in the refining ladle by using a new method of blowing gas through a system of nozzles installed at the bottom of the ladle. The obtained results allowed to determine the proper location of the plug at the bottom of the refining ladle and the possibility of using combined blowing. The tests were carried out for a refining ladle with a capacity of 3 m3 using a physical model on a linear scale of 1:3. The gas flow rate used in the model corresponded proportionally to the value previously used in industrial practice and amounted to 26.8 l/min. Experiments were performed for both combined blowing applications and through a purging plug at the bottom of the ladle. In the case of combined blowing, the volume of the gas stream was divided into two blowing sources (lance and purging plug). As a result of laboratory tests, one of the variants was selected and tested in industrial conditions. These studies confirmed the improvement in the efficiency of refining treatment of the FeSi alloy in terms of reducing the carbon and aluminum content in the alloy.x.

The article focuses on the issue of improving the efficiency of a Foundry Degassing Unit (FDU) via operational testing of aluminium alloys during casting at MOTOR JIKOV Slévárna a.s.. As part of the research, the efficiency of the refining process in the FDU was assessed. The main emphasis was placed on determining the moment of the greatest decrease in the hydrogen content in the melt and whether it is possible to shorten the refining cycle. The values of the Dichte Index were determined, on the basis of which the degassing curve was plotted and the progress of the melt degassing was assessed. To ensure the required quality of castings, the maximum allowable value of the Dichte Index ranged from 3 to 4%. During the process, the temperature drop during the refining cycle was also determined. The total temperature drop from pouring the melt into the ladle to the end of refining ranged from 26 to 32 °C, which is within the acceptable limits of the foundry. Based on the knowledge resulting from the operational experiments, recommendations were formulated to optimize the refining technology at the FDU for the MOTOR JIKOV Slévárna a.s. foundry.

Physical modelling is successfully used to understand mechanisms involved in the aluminium refining process by injecting inert gas into the liquid metal through rotors. Two types of industrial impellers, which are extremely different in construction, were tested in the research. The aim of the research was to determine the effectiveness of their operation depending on their degree of wear. This type of research has not been tested on water models so far. During the process, the parameters were changed, such as the gas flow rate from 13 to 19 L/min, the rotor speed from 325 to 400 rpm and the height of the rotor from the bottom of the refining reactor. Tests were carried out for new and worn rotors. Oxygen removal rate curves were prepared on the basis of tests determining changes in oxygen content in the model liquid as a function of time for changing rotor speed values. It was found that the efficiency of hydrogen removal from the model liquid was higher when worn impellers were used in the model. In order to verify results of model tests, a metallographic analysis of samples obtained in industrial conditions and using the analysed process parameters was carried out.

The paper presents the possibility of recovering metals from printed circuit boards (PCBs) of spent mobile phones using the hydrometallurgical method. Two-stage leaching of Cu(II), Fe(III), Sn(IV), Zn(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) with H2SO4 (2 and 5 M) and HNO3 (2 M) with the addition of H2O2 (10 and 30%) and O3 (9 or 15 g/h) was conducted at various process conditions (temperature-313, 333 and 353 K, time-60, 120, 240, 300 min, type and concentration of leaching agent, type and concentration of oxidant, solid-liquid ratio (S/L)), allowing for a high or total metals leaching rate. The use of two leaching stages allows for the preservation of selectivity, separation and recovery of metals: in the first stage of Fe(III), Sn(IV) and in the second stage of the remaining tested metal ions, i.e., Cu(II), Zn(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II). Removing Fe from the tested PCBs' material at the beginning of the process eliminates the need to use magnetic methods, the purpose of which is to separate magnetic metal particles (ferrous) from non-magnetic (non-ferrous) particles; these procedures involve high operating costs. Since the leaching of Cu(II) ions with sulfuric(VI) acid practically does not occur (less than 1%), this allows for almost complete transfer of these ions into the solution in the second stage of leaching. Moreover, to speed up the process and not generate too many waste solutions, oxidants in the form of hydrogen peroxide and ozone were used. The best degree of leaching of all tested metal ions was obtained when 2 M sulfuric(VI) acid at 353 K was used in the 1st research stage, and 2 M nitric(V) acid and 9 g/h O3 at 298 K in the 2nd stage of leaching, which allowed it to be totally leached 100% of Fe(III), Cu(II), Sn(IV), Zn(II), Ni(II) and 90% Pb(II).

Obtaining high-quality aluminum is associated with the use of an effective method of refining, which is argon-purging, in which gas bubbles are introduced into the liquid metal by means of rotary impellers. Various rotary impellers are used in the industry; however, if a newly designed impeller is constructed, it should be tested prior to industrial use. For this purpose, physical modeling is used, which enables the investigation of the phenomena occurring during refining and the selection of optimal processing parameters without costly research carried out in the industry. The newly designed rotary impeller was tested on the physical model of a URO-200 batch reactor. The flow rate of refining gas was: 10, 15 and 20 dm3·min-1, whereas rotary impeller speed was 300, 400 and 500 rpm. The research consists of a visualization test showing the schemes of the gas bubbles' dispersion level in the liquid metal and experiments for removing oxygen from water, which is an analogue of removing hydrogen from aluminum.

The process of platinum recovery from used car catalysts is highly desirable for both economic and environmental reasons. From the many available methods of processing used car catalysts, the article conducted both numerical and experimental studies using a device based on the collector metal method with lead as a modified medium through a magnetohydrodynamic pump for washing platinum from the channels of the ceramic catalyst carrier. It was assumed that lead alloys with the addition of lithium increase the extraction of platinum from thin catalytic layers and accelerate the platinum dissolution reaction in the Pb-Li alloy, which is the result of a greater affinity of lithium for platinum compared to lead. This assumption was verified by numerical simulations as well as laboratory tests. Tests were carried out for the secondary supply voltage range between 40 and 60 V and the catalyst flushing time between 240 and 480 s. Graphical results of the research were discussed.

The paper presents the results of tests carried out during the refining of the AlSi9Cu3(Fe) alloy in industrial conditions at the FDU stand. In the tests, three different rotors made of classical graphite, fine-grained graphite and classical graphite with SiC spraying were tested for the degree of wear. A series of tests was conducted for five cases-0% to 100% of consumption every 25%-corresponding to the cycles of the refining process. The number of cycles corresponding to 100% wear of each rotor was determined as 1112. The results of the rotor wear profile for all types of graphite after the assumed cycles are presented. Comparison of CAD models of new rotors and 3D scans of rotors in the final stage of operation revealed material losses during operational tests. The study assessed the efficiency of the rotor in terms of its service life as well as work efficiency. It was estimated on the basis of the calculated values of the Dichte Index (DI) and the density of the samples solidified in the vacuum. The structure of samples before and after refining at various stages of rotor wear is also presented, and the results are discussed.

Concern for the environment and rational management of resources requires the development of recoverable methods of obtaining metallic materials. This also applies to the production of aluminium and its alloys. The quality requirements of the market drive aluminium producers to use effective refining methods, and one of the most commonly used is blowing an inert gas into liquid aluminium via a rotating impeller. The efficiency and cost of this treatment depends largely on the application of the correct ratios between the basic parameters of the process, which are the flow rate of the inert gas, the speed of the rotor and the duration of the process. Determining these ratios in production conditions is expensive and difficult. This article presents the results of research aimed at determining the optimal ratio of the inert gas flow rate to the rotary impeller speed, using physical modeling techniques for the rotor as used in industrial conditions. The tests were carried out for rotary impeller speeds from 150 to 550 rpm and gas flow rates of 12, 17 and 22 dm3/min. The research was carried out on a 1:1 scale physical model, and the results, in the form of visualization of the degree of gas-bubble dispersion, were assessed on the basis of the five typical dispersion patterns. The removal of oxygen from water was carried out analogously to the process of removing hydrogen from aluminium. The curves of the rate of oxygen removal from the model liquid were determined, showing the course of oxygen reduction during refining with the same inert gas flows and rotor speeds mentioned above.

The article presents the results of studies on the influence of Mg on the formation of the periodic layered structure of the Zn-AlMg coatings. These coatings were produced by the double batch hot dip method in a Zn bath and then in a Zn-Al(Mg) bath with a content of 15, 23, 31 wt.% Al and 3, 6 wt.% Mg. The microstructure of the coatings (OM, SEM) was revealed and the phase composition (XRD) obtained in two-component Zn-Al baths and Zn-AlMg baths were determined. The periodic layered structure was found to consist of alternating FeAl3 phase layers and a bath alloy (Zn + Al + Mg). Moreover, it was observed that the addition of 3 wt.% Mg reduces the thickness of the coating in baths containing 23 and 31 wt.% Al. However, the addition of 6 wt.% Mg causes complete disappearance of periodic layered structure in a bath with 23 wt.% Al. In a bath with a content of 31 wt.% Al the addition of 6 wt.% Mg creates a compact layer consisting of the FeAl3 phase containing the precipitation of the MgZn2 phase and Fe2Al5 phase. Such a structure of the coating transition layer limits the growth of the periodic layered structure in the coating.

The article presented the results of tests determining the synergistic effect of Al, Ni, and Pb additions on a zinc bath on the structure and corrosion resistance of coatings obtained on low silicon steel. Analyzed coatings were produced on S235JRG2 steel with Si content of 0.02 mass%. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was compared with the corrosion resistance of the coating obtained in the "pure" zinc bath. Structure at high magnifications (SEM) was determined, as well as coating thickness and chemical composition in microspheres. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was established comparatively in standard corrosion tests in neutral salt spray and a humid atmosphere containing SO2. It was found that the addition of Pb to the zinc bath reduced the corrosion resistance of the coatings. In the coating structure obtained in the Zn-AlNiPb bath, lead precipitation was observed in both the outer layer and the intermediate layer of the coating. Grain boundaries were the preferred site for lead precipitation. The presence of Pb precipitates favored conditions for the creation of additional corrosion cells, which led to a decrease in the corrosion resistance of the coatings.

Obtaining zinc coatings by the batch hot-dip galvanizing process currently represents one of the most effective and economical methods of protecting steel products and structures against corrosion. The batch hot-dip galvanizing process has been used for over 150 years, but for several decades, there has been a dynamic development of this technology, the purpose of which is to improve the efficiency of zinc use and reduce its consumption and improve the quality of the coating. The appropriate selection of the chemical composition of the galvanizing bath enables us to control the reactivity of steel, improve the drainage of liquid zinc from the product surface, and reduce the amount of waste, which directly affects the quality of the coating and the technology of the galvanizing process. For this purpose, the effect of many alloying additives to the zinc bath on the structure and thickness of the coating was tested. The article reviews the influence of various elements introduced into the bath individually and in different configurations, discusses the positive and negative effects of their influence on the galvanizing process. The current development in the field of the chemical composition of galvanizing baths is also presented and the best-used solutions for the selection and management of the chemical composition of the bath are indicated.

The paper presents results of studies on the impact of bismuth and tin additions to the Zn-AlNi bath on microstructure and corrosion resistance of hot dip galvanizig coatings. The structure at high magnifications on the top surface and cross-section of coatings received in the Zn-AlNiBiSn bath was revealed and the microanalysis EDS (energy dispersion spectroscopy) of chemical composition was determined. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was tested relatively in a neutral salt spray test (NSS), and tests in a humid atmosphere containing SO2. Electrochemical parameters of coatings corrosion were determined. It was found that Zn-AlNiBiSn coatings show lower corrosion resistance in comparison with the coatings received in the Zn-AlNi bath without Sn and Bi alloying additions. Structural research has shown the existence of precipitations of Sn-Bi alloy in the coating. It was found that Sn-Bi precipitations have more electropositive potential in relation to zinc, which promotes the formation of additional corrosion cells.
