RESUMO

Interprofessional Education (IPE) is intended to prepare health professionals for teambased care. Little is known about IPE offerings for psychology trainees. The article reports on a survey of training directors (263) from graduate school, internship, and fellowship programs about IPE in a 39-item survey. Most programs have IPE activities across 17 types (e.g., classroom didactics, IP team care, Grand Rounds, simulations, etc.), though 34% reported no or poorly coordinated IPE. Barriers included limited funding/protected time and conflicting student schedules. Resources needed for implementing IPE included incorporating IPE into clinical settings, curricular materials, and evaluation tools. Only 15% felt institutional leadership considered IPE a high priority. Training directors need leadership engagement and support, protected time, and administrative support as well as faculty development for event design and facilitation skills. This study is an exploratory first step, more granular investigation of quality and quantity of IPE from training directors' perspectives is needed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A respite program at a southeastern university was developed to provide respite services to local families of children with special needs and to integrate a hands-on clinical experience for nursing students. METHOD: To assess the nursing students' perceptions of participating in the respite program experience, a survey was administered to prelicensure nursing students. RESULTS: Analysis of survey data revealed all participants were satisfied with the respite experience, perceived they will be able to apply knowledge obtained, and acknowledged opportunities to enhance soft skills. Survey results can be used to affirm positive student perceptions associated with a respite clinical learning experience. CONCLUSION: Valuable data describing experiences of undergraduate nursing students who participated in the respite program was obtained. This innovative learning experience meets a community need for children with special needs while providing experiential learning with diverse populations. [J Nurs Educ. 2023;62(3):180-182.].

RESUMO

Neurodevelopmental disorders have steadily increased in incidence in the United States. Over the past decade, there have been significant changes in clinical diagnoses and treatments some of which are due to the increasing adoption of pharmacogenomics (PGx) by clinicians. In this pilot study, a multidisciplinary team at the Arkansas Children's Hospital North West consulted on 27 patients referred for difficult-to-manage neurodevelopmental and/or neurobehavioral disorders. The 27 patients were evaluated by the team using records review, team discussion, and pharmacogenetic testing. OneOme RightMed® (Minneapolis, MN, USA) and the Arkansas Children's Hospital comprehensive PGx test were used for drug prescribing guidance. Of the 27 patients' predicted phenotypes, the normal metabolizer was 11 (40.8%) for CYP2C19 and 16 (59.3%) for CYP2D6. For the neurodevelopmental disorders, the most common comorbid conditions included attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (66.7%), anxiety disorder (59.3%), and autism (40.7%). Following the team assessment and PGx testing, 66.7% of the patients had actionable medication recommendations. This included continuing current therapy, suggesting an appropriate alternative medication, starting a new therapy, or adding adjunct therapy (based on their current medication use). Moreover, 25.9% of patients phenoconverted to a CYP2D6 poor metabolizer. This retrospective chart review pilot study highlights the value of a multidisciplinary treatment approach to deliver precision healthcare by improving physician clinical decisions and potentially impacting patient outcomes. It also shows the feasibility to implement PGx testing in neurodevelopmental/neurobehavioral disorders.
