Studies on the influence of CN on Hg methylation rates in aquatic systems draining gold mining (artisanal and small-scale) communities in Africa are rare. The study assessed the influence of CN on Hg methylation in aquatic sediments of two major river systems draining artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities of the Prestea-Huni Valley district, Southwestern Ghana. The miners extract gold (Au) through exclusive amalgam [Hg-Au] formation or cyanidation of Au-rich Hg-contaminated tailings, or a combination of both techniques. Hg water solubility and probable mercuric compounds in sediments of Hg-contaminated CN-loaded (River Aprepre) and Hg-contaminated non-CN (River Ankobra) aquatic systems within the district were investigated. THg was determined by CV-AAS after HF/HNO3/HCl digestion. MeHg in sediments were extracted with H2SO4/KBr/CuSO4-CH2Cl2; followed by aqueous-phase propylation, preconcentration-on-Tenax, and GC-CV-AFS. River Aprepre showed 4.58-14.83 ngMeHg/g as Hg (1.4-3.7% THg as MeHg), with 241-415 ngTHg/g, and 0.05-0.21 mgCN/kg. For River Ankobra, MeHg ranged 0.24-1.21 ngMeHg/g (0.08-0.35% THg as MeHg) with 162-490 ngTHg/g dw and CN < 0.001 mg/kg. There was positive correlation (r2 = 0.5974; p < 0.01) between MeHg and CN in River Aprepre. The water-soluble fraction of Hg in sediment from both rivers was < 1% of THg. Hg in sediments from River Aprepre were generally more soluble than that from River Ankobra, indicating that Hg in sediments from River Aprepre were potentially more bioavailable for methylation. Accordingly, the presence of CN in Hg-dominated river sediments potentially influences and enhances the solubility and mobility of Hg, resulting in increased Hg methylation rates.

This study was aimed at using in vitro microcosm experiments to assess crude oil degradation efficiency of Acinetobacter junii and Alcanivorax xenomutans isolated along Ghana's coast. Uncontaminated seawater from selected locations along the coast was used to isolate bacterial species by employing enrichment culture procedures with crude oil as the only carbon source. The isolates were identified by means of the extended direct colony transfer method of the Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF MS), as Acinetobacter junii, and Alcanivorax xenomutans. Remediation tests showed that Acinetobacter junii yielded degradation efficiencies of 27.59 %, 41.38 % and 57.47 %. Whereas efficiencies of 21.14 %, 32.18 % and 43.68 % were recorded by Alcanivorax xenomutans representing 15, 30 and 45 days respectively. Consortia of Acinetobacter junii, and Alcanivorax xenomutans also yielded 32.18 %, 48.28 % and 62.07 % for the selected days respectively. Phylogenetic characterization using ClustalW and BLAST of sequences generated from the Oxford Nanopore Sequencing technique, showed that the Ghanaian isolates clustered with Alcanivorax xenomutans and Acinetobacter junii species respectively. An analysis of the sequenced data for the 1394-bp portion of the 16S rRNA gene of the isolates revealed >99 % sequence identity with the isolates present on the GenBank database. The isolates of closest identity were Alcanivorax xenomutans and Acinetobacter junii with accession numbers, NR_133958.1 and KJ147060.1 respectively. Acinetobacter junii and Alcanivorax xenomutans isolated from Ghana's coast under pristine seawater conditions have therefore demonstrated their capacity to be used for the remediation of crude oil spills.

Total As content and the As species distribution in water and sediments from the Kwabrafo stream, a major water body draining the Obuasi gold mining community in southwestern Ghana, have been investigated. Total As content was determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). Ion-pair reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography-neutron activation analysis (HPLC-NAA) was used for speciation of As species. Solid phase extraction with phosphate buffer was used to extract soluble As species from lyophilized sediment. The mass balance after phosphate extraction of soluble As species in sediment varied from 89 to 96 %. Compositionally appropriate reference material International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)-Lake Sediment (SL)-1 was used to check the validity of INAA method for total As determination. The measured values are in good agreement with the IAEA recommended value and also within the 95 % confidence interval. The accuracy of the measurement in terms of relative deviation from the IAEA recommended value was ±0.83 %. "In-house" prepared As(III) and As(V) standards were used to validate the HPLC-INAA method used for the As species determination. Total As concentration in the water samples ranged from 1.15 to 9.20 mg/L. As(III) species in water varied from 0.13 to 0.7 mg/L, while As(V) species varied from 0.79 to 3.85 mg/L. Total As content in sediment ranged from 2,134 to 3,596 mg/kg dry mass. The levels of As(III) and As(V) species in the sediment ranges from 138 to 506 mg/kg dry mass and 156 to 385 mg/kg dry mass, respectively.

The utilization and improper use of crude oil can have irreparable damage on the environment and human populations. This study sought to isolate hydrocarbon utilizing bacteria from 1% v/v pristine seawater and 1% v/v crude oil using enrichment culture techniques. Whole genome sequencing of DNA using the Oxford Nanopore sequencing technique with Fastq WIMP as the workflow at 3% abundance was undertaken. The results showed that the most abundant isolates identified using this technique at specific sampling sites were, Acinetobacter junii (51.9%), Alcanivarax pacificus (15.8%), Acinetobacter haemolyticus (21.6%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (23.4%), Alcanivorax xenomutans (24.7%), Alcanivorax xenomutans (23.0%) Acinetobacter baumannii (40.0%) and Acinetobacter junii (14.2%). Cumulatively, the most abundant isolates in the 8 sampling sites were Acinetobacter junii (17.91%), Alcanivorax xenomutans (11.68%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (7.68%), Escherichia coli (7.67%), Acinetobacter haemolyticus (3.40%), and Alkanivorax pacificus (3.10%). Spearman's rank correlation analysis to examine the strength of relationship between the physicochemical parameters and type of bacteria isolated, revealed that salinity (0.8046) and pH (0.7252) were the highest. Isolated bacteria from pristine seawater, especially Escherichia coli have shown their capacity for bioremediating oil spill pollution in oceanic environments in Ghana.

Over the past decades, there has been a growing concern about microplastics pollution in global aquatic habitats and its potential impact on human health. This study was carried out to determine the presence of microplastics in fish of economic importance in Ghana. Microplastics were found to be abundant in all investigated samples, with 68 % of the fishes contaminated with microplastics and a total of 133 plastic items identified in the fish. The presence of fibers, black coloured particles, and microplastics in the size range of 0.5-1.0 mm was the most abundant in the samples examined. Three polymers specifically, polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate, and polyamide were identified in the study. The presence of microplastics in the fishes investigated may pose severe ecological and health concerns, and hence comprehensive policies targeted at preventing plastic pollution of Ghana's maritime environment is warranted.

Medical physics has been an indispensable and strategic stakeholder in the delivery of radiological services to the healthcare system of Ghana. The practice has immensely supported radiation oncology and medical imaging facilities over the years, while the locally established training programme continues to produce human resource to feed these facilities. The training programme has grown to receive students from other African countries in addition to local students. Ghana has been recognised by the International Atomic Energy Agency as Regional Designated Centre for Academic Training of Medical Physicists in Africa. The Ghana Society for Medical Physics collaborates with the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences of the University of Ghana to ensure that training offered to medical physicists meet international standards, making them clinically qualified. The Society has also worked together with other bodies for the passage of the Health Profession's Regulatory Bodies Act, giving legal backing to the practice of medical physics and other allied health professions in Ghana. The country has participated in a number of International Atomic Energy Agency's projects on medical physics and has benefited from its training courses, fellowships and workshops, as well as those of other agencies such as International Organization for Medical Physics. This has placed Ghana's medical physicists in good position to practice competently and improve healthcare.

Adolescents require optimum dietary supply of the essential trace mineral selenium (Se); however the absence of reliable and accurate data on the dietary supply of selenium for the adolescent population in Ghanaian residential care orphanages have made it difficult for public health nutritionists to assess the adequacy of the dietary supply. The dietary supply of selenium for adolescents (12-15 years) in three residential care orphanages, (Osu, Tutu-Akwapim and Teshie), in Southern Ghana have been evaluated by sampling their 24-h duplicate diets (including water) for 7-consecutive days using the duplicate diet sampling technique. The mass fraction of selenium in the blended lyophilized homogenates of duplicate diets was determined by radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA). The validity of the RNAA method for selenium determination was checked by analyses of NIST SRM 1548a (Typical diet). The chemical yield of the radiochemical separation was determined by spectrophotometry. The average mass fractions of selenium in the blended lyophilized 24-hour duplicate diets for Osu, Tutu-Akwapim and Teshie were; 165±61 [117.2-285.2], 203±68 [110.5-304.9] and 250±92 [128.8-408.0]ng Seg(-1) lyophilized matter respectively. The average dietary supply of Se were, 57.6±17.3 [42.2-88.4], 82.0±30.7 [44.3-136.2] and 91.7±44.2 [46.0-153.4]µg Se day(-1) for Osu, Tutu-Akwapim and Teshie orphanages respectively. The data generated will help public health nutritionists in the provision of dietary advice and nutritional support for the studied orphanages, as well as other orphanages. The data will also help in the planning of institutional diets.

The feasibility study on the production of (177)Lu radioisotope using a low power research reactor has been conducted. A reliable method for predicting the yield of (177)Lu produced using the cyclic activation technique based on the Westcott formalism has been established. A specific activity of 243.24 mCi/g was obtained when a (176)Lu(2)O(3) of natural abundance was irradiated for 4 h and decayed for 20 h for four cycles at GHARR-1 with a neutron flux of 5.0×10(11) ncm(-2)s(-1).
