RESUMO

The disposal of electronic waste (EW) in open landfills has caused several toxic environmental effects. The harmful metallic components released in the environment due to deposition of EW act as hazards for living systems. EW management has been widely studied in recent days across the world. Though, several processes are implemented in extraction, recycling and recovery of heavy metals from the EW, most of them are not effective in recovering the precious metals. Various chemical processes are executed for efficient extraction of precious metals from e-wastes. Though the techniques are easy to process and rapid, however, the chemical leaching also has detrimental environmental consequences. Biological approaches, on the other hand, solves the purpose for efficient and environmentally friendly recovery of precious metals. Thus, both resource recovery as well as remediation can be targeted simultaneously. Biotechnological methods offer sustainable and efficient solutions for metal recovery from electronic wastes, presenting a viable alternative to traditional methods. Continued advancements in this field hold significant promise for addressing the growing e-waste challenge.

BACKGROUND: Previous case studies have reported reversal of acute renal failure after pericardiocentesis in pericardial effusion. This study examines the effects of pericardiocentesis on preprocedural low cardiac output and acute renal dysfunction in patients with pericardial effusion. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 95 patients undergoing pericardiocentesis between 2015 and 2020. Pre- and post-procedure transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE) were reviewed for evidence of cardiac tamponade, resolution of pericardial effusion, and for estimation of right atrial (RA) pressure and cardiac output. Laboratory values were compared at presentation and post-procedure. Patients on active renal replacement therapy were excluded. RESULTS: Ninety-five patients were included for analysis (mean age 62.2 ± 17.8 years, 58% male). There was a significant increase in glomerular filtration rate pre- and post-procedure. Fifty-six patients (58.9%) had an improvement in glomerular filtration rate after pericardiocentesis (termed "responders"), and these patients had a lower pre-procedure glomerular filtration rate than "non-responders." There was a significant improvement in estimated cardiac output and right atrial pressure for patients in both groups. Patients who had an improvement in renal function had significantly lower pre-procedural diastolic blood pressure and mean arterial pressure. CONCLUSIONS: Pericardial drainage may improve effusion-mediated acute renal dysfunction by reducing right atrial pressure and thus systemic venous congestion, and by increasing forward stroke volume and perfusion pressure.

Petroleum hydrocarbon (PH) pollution has mostly been caused by oil exploration, extraction, and transportation activities in colder regions, particularly in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, where it serves as a primary source of energy. Due to the resilience feature of nature, such polluted environments become the realized ecological niches for a wide community of psychrophilic hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (PHcB). In contrast, to other psychrophilic species, PHcB is extremely cold-adapted and has unique characteristics that allow them to thrive in greater parts of the cold environment burdened with PHs. The stated group of bacteria in its ecological niche aids in the breakdown of litter, turnover of nutrients, cycling of carbon and nutrients, and bioremediation. Although such bacteria are the pioneers of harsh colder environments, their growth and distribution remain under the influence of various biotic and abiotic factors of the environment. The review discusses the prevalence of PHcB community in colder habitats, the metabolic processes involved in the biodegradation of PH, and the influence of biotic and abiotic stress factors. The existing understanding of the PH metabolism by PHcB offers confirmation of excellent enzymatic proficiency with high cold stability. The discovery of more flexible PH degrading strategies used by PHcB in colder environments could have a significant beneficial outcome on existing bioremediation technologies. Still, PHcB is least explored for other industrial and biotechnological applications as compared to non-PHcB psychrophiles. The present review highlights the pros and cons of the existing bioremediation technologies as well as the potential of different bioaugmentation processes for the effective removal of PH from the contaminated cold environment. Such research will not only serve to investigate the effects of pollution on the basic functional relationships that form the cold ecosystem but also to assess the efficacy of various remediation solutions for diverse settings and climatic conditions.

The production of keratinases was evaluated in submerged fermentation with Aspergillus niger and by pigs' swine hair in a batch bioreactor. Experimental planning was performed to assess the interaction between different variables. The enzyme extract produced was characterized at various pH and temperatures and subjected to enzyme concentration using a biphasic aqueous system and salt/solvent precipitation techniques. In addition, the substrate's potential in reducing hexavalent chromium from synthetic potassium dichromate effluent with an initial concentration of 20 mg L-1 of chromium was evaluated. The resulting enzyme extract showed 89 ± 2 U mL-1 of keratinase. The enzyme concentration resulted in a purification factor of 1.3, while sodium chloride/acetone and ammonium sulfate/acetone resulted in a purification factor of 1.9 and 1.4, respectively. Still using the residual substrate of swine hair from the fermentation, a 94% reduction of hexavalent chromium concentration occurred after 9 h of reaction. Thus, the study proved relevant for producing keratinases, with further environmental applicability and the possibility of concentrating the extract via low-cost processes.

OBJECTIVE: There is increasing interest in applying artificial intelligence chatbots like generative pretrained transformer 4 (GPT-4) in the medical field. This study aimed to explore the universality of GPT-4 responses to simulated clinical scenarios of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) across diverse global settings. METHODS: Seventeen international experts with more than 15 years of experience in pediatric orthopaedics were selected for the evaluation panel. Eight simulated DDH clinical scenarios were created, covering 4 key areas: (1) initial evaluation and diagnosis, (2) initial examination and treatment, (3) nursing care and follow-up, and (4) prognosis and rehabilitation planning. Each scenario was completed independently in a new GPT-4 session. Interrater reliability was assessed using Fleiss kappa, and the quality, relevance, and applicability of GPT-4 responses were analyzed using median scores and interquartile ranges. Following scoring, experts met in ZOOM sessions to generate Regional Consensus Assessment Scores, which were intended to represent a consistent regional assessment of the use of the GPT-4 in pediatric orthopaedic care. RESULTS: GPT-4's responses to the 8 clinical DDH scenarios received performance scores ranging from 44.3% to 98.9% of the 88-point maximum. The Fleiss kappa statistic of 0.113 ( P = 0.001) indicated low agreement among experts in their ratings. When assessing the responses' quality, relevance, and applicability, the median scores were 3, with interquartile ranges of 3 to 4, 3 to 4, and 2 to 3, respectively. Significant differences were noted in the prognosis and rehabilitation domain scores ( P < 0.05 for all). Regional consensus scores were 75 for Africa, 74 for Asia, 73 for India, 80 for Europe, and 65 for North America, with the Kruskal-Wallis test highlighting significant disparities between these regions ( P = 0.034). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the promise of GPT-4 in pediatric orthopaedic care, particularly in supporting preliminary DDH assessments and guiding treatment strategies for specialist care. However, effective integration of GPT-4 into clinical practice will require adaptation to specific regional health care contexts, highlighting the importance of a nuanced approach to health technology adaptation. PURPOSE: Early recognition is crucial for occult spinal dysraphism associated with congenital spinal deformities. There is limited literature available on its occurrence in congenital scoliosis and kyphosis in the Indian population. METHODS: Our study involved a retrospective review of 247 children who presented at a single centre. We analyzed their demographics and clinical and radiological findings, which included the type of deformity, its location, vertebral anomaly, Cobb angle, and MRI findings. The deformities were categorized as congenital scoliosis or congenital kyphosis with failure of formation, failure of segmentation, or both. RESULTS: A total of 247 cases were examined (congenital scoliosis-229, congenital kyphosis-18). The average age was seven years (range 0.8 to 19 years, SD 4.6). The mean Cobb angle at presentation in the congenital scoliosis group was 49.4° (range 8 to 145°, SD 23.77) for those with abnormal MRI and 42.45° (range 5 to 97°, SD 20.09) for those with normal MRI. For the congenital kyphosis group, the mean K angle at presentation was 47.7° (range 14 to 110°, SD 33.33) for those with abnormal MRI and 47.36° (range 15 to 70°, SD 16.63) for those with normal MRI. Abnormal MRI results were observed in 130 of the patients (congenital scoliosis-53.7%, congenital kyphosis-38.8%). The highest incidence of abnormal MRI findings was observed in the failure of segmentation (66.6%) and mixed (65%) types. Deformities in the dorsal region had the highest incidence (61.9%). The most common dysraphism instances were diastematomyelia and tethered cord. There was a significant correlation between type of deformity and presence of dysraphism. CONCLUSION: This is the largest case series of congenital scoliosis and kyphosis reported from India. We found a high incidence of occult spinal dysraphism as compared to other published series. Occult spinal dysraphism is more common in the thoracic region. Diastematomyelia followed by tethered cord was the most common anomaly observed. We recommend MRI screening of whole spine and craniovertebral junction.

The emergence of drug resistance, caused due the presence of pharmaceutical contaminant in the environment, highlights the critical need for pharmaceutical drugs management. Pharmaceutical drugs are sourced in wastewater as pharmaceutical industrial effluents, antibiotic misuse, and inappropriate disposal of expired pharmaceuticals, eventually ending up in sewage deposition. In this work, we aimed to degrade paracetamol (APAP) through the mycoremediation approach in laboratory scale. The isolated paracetamol degradation fungal strain, identified as Aspergillus niger KCAC efficiently degraded the drug into non-toxic metabolites. The results demonstrated that 99.6% degradation rate was achieved by Aspergillus niger KCAC. Unique, low-cost, eco-friendly bioformulation of the fungal isolate was prepared during the study using used vegetable cooking oil as substrate. The bioformulation showed extended shelf-life and can be used in future for large-scale application. Thus, this detailed investigation on paracetamol biodegradation may be useful in developing a wastewater treatment system effective against paracetamol-contaminated wastewater.

Tanning and other leather processing methods utilize a large amount of freshwater, dyes, chemicals, and salts and produce toxic waste, raising questions regarding their environmental sensitivity and eco-friendly nature. Total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, chemical oxygen demand, and ions such as chromium, sulfate, and chloride turn tannery wastewater exceedingly toxic for any living species. Therefore, it is imperative to treat tannery effluent, and existing plants must be examined and upgraded to keep up with recent technological developments. Different conventional techniques to treat tannery wastewater have been reported based on their pollutant removal efficiencies, advantages, and disadvantages. Research on photo-assisted catalyst-enhanced deterioration has inferred that both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis can be established as green initiatives, the latter being more efficient at degrading organic pollutants. However, the scientific community experiences significant problems developing a feasible treatment technique owing to the long degradation times and low removal efficiency. Hence, there is a chance for an improved solution to the problem of treating tannery wastewater through the development of a hybrid technology that uses flocculation as the primary treatment, a unique integrated photo-catalyst in a precision-designed reactor as the secondary method, and finally, membrane-based tertiary treatment to recover the spent catalyst and reclaimable water. This review gives an understanding of the progressive advancement of a cutting-edge membrane-based system for the management of tanning industrial waste effluents towards the reclamation of clean water. Adaptable routes toward sludge disposal and the reviews on techno-economic assessments have been shown in detail, strengthening the scale-up confidence for implementing such innovative hybrid systems.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and implement a Group B Streptococcal (GBS) dynamic order set to improve adherence to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (ACOG/CDC) guidelines. STUDY DESIGN: A team of information technology and clinical experts developed a dynamic order block. The content was patterned after the CDC "Prevent GBS" mobile app. It was then embedded in the labor and delivery/induction order set and piloted at a single high-volume obstetric unit. Following the pilot and incorporation of the 2019 ACOG update of the CDC guidelines, the order set was rolled out in five additional hospitals within a region of a large health system. Information on GBS prophylaxis performance before and after implementation was available for the pilot site and four of the additional hospitals. Information before implementation was obtained electronically from electronic medical record (EMR) laboratory and pharmacy data and supplemented by manual chart review. Postimplementation data were obtained from discrete order set EMR data elements. Adherence to the guidelines before and after were compared using chi-squared test. RESULTS: There were 7,114 deliveries before implementation and 4,502 after implementation. Preterm delivery occurred in 6.8 and 6.9%, respectively. There was an increase in appropriate treatment of preterm patients (positive and unknown GBS) delivering after implementation (88.7-99.1%, p < 0.001). More patients were reported to have a penicillin allergy before implementation than after implementation (14.7 vs. 11.1%, respectively, p = 0.01). Associated changes in therapy noted after implementation included a nonsignificant decrease in the proportion reporting a high-risk allergy (50.3 vs. 41.9%, p = 0.18), an increase in the appropriate use of clindamycin and vancomycin (64.4 vs. 92.3%, p < 0.001) and a decrease in clindamycin use in those without sensitivity testing. CONCLUSION: Routine universal use of a dynamic admission labor/induction order set was associated with high and improved adherence to GBS prophylaxis guidelines. INTRODUCTION AND AIMS OF STUDY: Timely detection of shoulder subluxation in infants with brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) is essential to prevent the progression of glenohumeral deformity. Shoulder ultrasonography (USG) is routinely used to detect an infantile subluxation/dislocation, but its use is limited because of the paucity of expert radiologists in developing countries. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical examination predictors to determine shoulder subluxation in patients with BPBI correlating with ultrasound confirmation. METHODS: We prospectively studied children who presented to our hospital between 2017 and 2021 diagnosed as brachial plexus birth injury. In patients developing internal rotation contracture of the shoulder, we looked for 3 standard clinical signs: reduced passive external rotation <60 degrees, deep anterior crease (DAC) and relatively short arm segment. Shoulder subluxation was defined as USG measurement of alpha angle>30 degrees and ossific nuclei of the humerus lying behind the dorsal scapular line. Sensitivity and specificity were used to assess their efficacy in clinical diagnosis of shoulder subluxation in different groups. The predicted probability of shoulder subluxation from each prediction rule was compared with actual distributions based on USG confirmation. RESULTS: Of the 58 BPBI infants who developed PER<60 degrees at the shoulder, 41 had USG confirmed shoulder subluxation. The 2 independent predictors of shoulder subluxation (PER<45 degrees and DAC) were identified in the current patient population based on data analysis. The presence of short arm segment is a very specific marker of shoulder subluxation but not sensitive. The predicted probability of shoulder subluxation from the prediction rule combining all the 3 markers were similar to the actual distributions in the current patient population. CONCLUSIONS: PER<45 degrees and presence of deep anterior crease are clinical markers indicating shoulder dislocation in patients with BPBI developing reduced external rotation at the shoulder. On the basis of the proposed clinical diagnosis algorithm, the above markers along with the selective use of USG can help in early detection and treatment of infantile shoulder dislocation.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data regarding the consequences of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection in patients with maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). Our objective was to identify the clinical manifestations and prognostic factors and to assess the impact of treatment schemes on the outcomeMaterials and methods: Here we present retrospectively collected data from medical records of patients on MHD hospitalized with COVID-19 infection from 1st June to 30th November 2020Result: Around 69 patients were admitted with a median age of 51 years. About 81% had hypertension, 41% had diabetes, and 24% had body mass index (BMI) ≥ 23 kg/m2 . Of all who died, 73.33% had dialysis vintage of <12 months (p = 0.06). Common presenting symptoms were fatigue (67%), fever (58%), cough (42%), and dyspnea (35%). Milder, severe, and critical disease was found in 35, 45, and 20% of patients, respectively. About 54 patients were living 4 weeks after discharge. Around 15 patients died, that includes all who received invasive ventilatory support. Nonsurvivors were older and had lower oxygen saturation on admission, lower hemoglobin (Hb), and worst lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), interleukin (IL)-6, and D-dimer values than survivors, which were statistically significant. Use of remdesivir and anticoagulant improves chances of survival (p-value 0.035 and 0.034, respectively) Conclusion: About one-third of patients had mild disease. Those with critical disease displayed high mortality. Older age, male gender, short dialysis vintage, lower oxygen saturation on admission, anemia, leucocytosis, higher inflammatory markers [except C-reactive protein (CRP)], bilateral lung opacity, and requirement of the mechanical ventilator are poor prognostic factors. CRP, ferritin, and lymphopenia are not good prognostic markers unlike in the general population. These findings need to be verified in larger cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (Morquio syndrome A, MPS IVA) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused due to biallelic variants in the N-acetylgalactoseamine-6-sulfate sulfatase (GALNS) gene. The mutation spectrum in this condition is determined amongst sub-populations belonging to the north, south and east India geography, however, sub-populations of west Indian origin, especially Gujarati-Indians, are yet to be studied. We aimed to analyse the variants present in the GLANS gene amongst the population of Gujarat by sequencing all exons and exon-intron boundaries of the GALNS gene in patients from 23 unrelated families. RESULTS: We report 11 variants that include eight missense variants: (p.L36R, p.D39G, p.P77R, p.C79R, pP125L, p.P151L, p.G255A and p.L350P), one splice site variant: (c.121-7C > G), one small insertion: (c.1241_1242insA, p.I416HfsTer2) and one small deletion: (c.839_841delACA). Of these, three missense variants (p.D39G, p.G255A and p.L350P), one splice site and the two indels mentioned above are novel. Interestingly, we observed a higher than anticipated prevalence of p.P77R variant in our cohort (n = 14/25, 56%). Haplotype analysis in cases with p.P77R variant and 63 ethnicity matched healthy population controls suggested a 4 SNP haplotype block present in cases compared to controls (likelihood ratio test p-value = 1.16 × 10-13), thereby suggesting p.P77R variant as a founder variant in the Gujarati-Indian population. Furthermore, age of mutation analysis suggested the variant to have arisen approximately 450 years ago in the population. CONCLUSION: p.P77R variant in the GLANS gene is likely to be a founder variant in MPS IVA patients of Gujarati-Indian ancestry and appeared approximately 450 years ago in the population. To our knowledge, this is the first variant to be posited as a founder variant in the GLANS gene in patients with MPS IVA syndrome.

Globally, abundant agricultural wastes (AWs) are being generated each day to fulfil the increasing demands of the fast-growing population. The limited and/or improper management of the same has created an urgent need to devise strategies for their timely utilization and valorisation, for agricultural sustainability and human-food and health security. The AWs are generated from different sources including crop residue, agro-industries, livestock, and aquaculture. The main component of the crop residue and agro-industrial waste is cellulose, (the most abundant biopolymer), followed by lignin and hemicellulose (lignocellulosic biomass). The AWs and their processing are a global issue since its vast majority is currently burned or buried in soil, causing pollution of air, water and global warming. Traditionally, some crop residues have been used in combustion, animal fodder, roof thatching, composting, soil mulching, matchsticks and paper production. But, lignocellulosic biomass can also serve as a sustainable source of biofuel (biodiesel, bioethanol, biogas, biohydrogen) and bioenergy in order to mitigate the fossil fuel shortage and climate change issues. Thus, valorisation of lignocellulosic residues has the potential to influence the bioeconomy by producing value-added products including biofertilizers, bio-bricks, bio-coal, bio-plastics, paper, biofuels, industrial enzymes, organic acids etc. This review encompasses circular bioeconomy based various AW management strategies, which involve 'reduction', 'reusing' and 'recycling' of AWs to boost sustainable agriculture and minimise environmental pollution.

BACKGROUND: Fractures around the shoulder region in infants are treated by arm-chest bandaging, adhesive strapping, or sling application. These conventional treatment methods are associated with issues like skin irritation, excoriation, movement of bone fragments causing muscle spasm, and difficulty in nursing care. We describe the technique of modified Velpeau sling application and reviewed its efficacy at a long-term follow-up. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted with 19 infants who presented between 2009 and 2018 to a tertiary care center in western India with either clavicle or humerus fracture. Inclusion criteria was any infant with humerus or clavicle fracture that underwent modified Velpeau sling application and had a minimum follow-up of 2 years. Patients were followed at weekly intervals until sling discontinuation based on the fracture healing. At further follow-up, children were assessed for the presence of angular or rotational malalignment and limb length discrepancy. Functional outcome was measured by the Paediatric Adolescent Shoulder Survey at the final follow-up. RESULTS: Seven clavicle and 12 humerus fractures were treated with this technique. The mean age at presentation was 50 days (range, 1 d to 7 mo). The average follow-up was 6 years (range, 2 to 10 y). Two infants had underlying osteogenesis imperfecta. Infants without underlying pathology had no angular/rotational malalignment or limb length discrepancy, while both infants with underlying osteogenesis imperfecta had a varus alignment and shortening of the humerus. Infants without underlying pathology demonstrated good functional outcomes measured by the Paediatric Adolescent Shoulder Survey questionnaire, while those with pathology had functional limitations. CONCLUSIONS: The modified Velpeau method is an effective way of treating fractures around the shoulder region in infants without underlying pathology. Several advantages such as accessibility of sling material, easy application, inexpensive material, and absence of skin-related complications make this an effective treatment. Industrial wastewater consists of inorganic and organic toxic pollutants that pose a threat to environmental sustainability. The organic pollutants are a menace to the environment and life forms than the inorganic substances and pose teratogenic, mutagenic, carcinogenic, and other serious detrimental effects on the living entities, moreover, they have a gene-altering effect on aquatic life forms and affect the soil fertility and quality. Removal of varying effluents having recalcitrant contaminants with conventional treatment technologies is strenuous. In contrast to physical and chemical methods, biological treatment methods are environmentally friendly, versatile, efficient, and technically feasible with low operational costs and energy footprints. Biological treatment is a secondary wastewater treatment system that utilizes the metabolic activities of microorganisms to oxidize or reduce inorganic and organic compounds and transform them into dense biomass, which later can be removed by the sedimentation process. Biological treatment in bioreactors is an ex situ method of bioremediation and provides the benefits of continuous monitoring under controlled parameters. This paper attempts to provide a review of bioremediation technologies discussing most concerning widespread bioreactors and advances used for different industrial effluents with their comparative merits and limitations.

The bacteria that colonize plant roots and enhance plant growth by various mechanisms are known as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). The functions of rhizobacteria stand substantially unexplored and detailed insights into the aerobic rice ecosystem are yet to be examined. In this study, we have isolated rhizobacteria from rice varieties grown under aerobic conditions. Seed germination test showed that strain Ekn 03 was significantly effective in stimulating germination, enhancing shoot and root length, and increasing dry matter accumulation in treated rice plants as compared to the uninoculated plants. Under greenhouse conditions, strain Ekn 03 treated rice varieties showed an overall increase in plant height by 7.63%, dry matter accumulation by 16.23%, and total chlorophyll content by 76.47%. Soil acetylene reduction assay (ARA) (4.17 nmole ethylene/g soil/h) and in-planta ARA (4.2 × 10-2 nmole ethylene/mg fresh weight of plant/h) was significantly higher in Ekn 03 treated rice variety PB 1509 under aerobic conditions. Other rice varieties showed comparable performance on inoculation with strain Ekn 03. The endophytic and rhizospheric population of antibiotic tagged Ekn 03 was higher in the roots of PB 1509 (1.02 × 104 cfu/g and 5.8 × 105 cfu/g soil, respectively) compared to other rice varieties. 16S rDNA sequence analysis revealed that strain Ekn 03 was having 100% similarity with Pseudomonas protegens. This study suggests that strain Ekn 03 can be used as a microbial inoculant in rice plants under aerobic system of cultivation. This is the first report on the application of P. protegens as PGPR in rice.

Removal of contaminants from wastewater is a big concern for the scientific community. Heavy metals are one of the major contaminants present in wastewater. Heavy metals such as Cd2+ , Pb2+ , Mn2+ , and so forth, are highly toxic and pose a serious threat to the environment due to their nonbiodegradable nature. With the advent of nanobiotechnology, heavy metal contaminants can be mitigated with the help of nanomaterials produced by eco-friendly methods. Specially designed bionanomaterials often exhibit properties such as increased shelf life, self-healing nature, adaptability in different environments, and cost-effectiveness, thus showing advantages over nanomaterials produced by physicochemical methods. Due to their high specificity and adsorption capacity, bionanomaterials can remove heavy metals present even in a very low concentration in wastewater. The use of bionanotechnology in their remediation paves a way for environmental sustainability and helps in cost reduction. This paper intends to discuss the nanobiotechnological approach for the remediation of heavy metals from wastewater. Furthermore, the paper also reviews some important nanomaterials and their potential applications in the depollution of heavy-metal contaminated wastewater.

Rapid industrialization is one of the intricate factors that is linked to the depletion of water resources and increased generation of wastewater. Due to various obstructions and impediments, such as ineffective treatment solutions, exorbitant prices, lack of basic amenities, insufficient financial assistance, and technical expertise, sustainable treatment of industrial effluents has become an onerous process in most parts of the world. The majority of current treatment solutions are conventional and outdated, and thus fall short to remove all the contaminants efficiently from the industrial wastewater. Moreover, poorly treated or untreated industrial effluents are indiscriminately dumped into water bodies such as lakes, ponds, and rivers, causing substantial health hazards to humans and animals and serious threats to the aquatic ecosystem. Thus, there is a need for highly efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable technologies for the treatment of industrial wastewater. Employment of microbial technologies such as microbial fuel cells and microalgal technologies, treatment of wastewater can be coupled with the production of bioelectricity and valuable biomass, respectively. Moreover, with nanofiltration and biochar technologies, the efficiency of the overall treatment procedure can be increased to a greater extent. The present review aims to highlight opportunities and challenges associated with some of the emerging trends in industrial wastewater research.

Nanotechnology has gained huge importance in the field of environmental clean-up today. Due to their remarkable and unique properties, it has shown potential application for the remediation of several pesticides and textile dyes. Recently it has shown positive results for the remediation of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). One of the highly exploited surfactants in detergent preparation is anionic surfactants. The SDS selected for the present study is an example of anionic linear alkyl sulfate. It is utilized extensively in industrial washing, which results in the high effluent level of this contaminant and ubiquitously toxic to the environment. The present review is based on the research depicting the adverse effects of SDS in general and possible strategies to minimizing its effects by bacterial degradation which are capable of exploiting the SDS as an only source of carbon. Moreover, it has also highlighted that how nanotechnology can play a role in the remediation of such recalcitrant pesticides.

Introduction: The use of remdesivir is not recommended in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection unless potential advantage offset disadvantage due to limited safety data. Our objective was to assess the safety of remdesivir in patients with end-stage renal failure and evaluate the outcome of this vulnerable group. Methodology: We carried out a retrospective observational study in dialysis-dependent ESRD patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection who received a standard 5-day course of remdesivir (powder form) from June 2020 to December 2020. Oxygen requirement, hemogram, inflammatory markers, and liver function tests before and after remdesivir treatment were compared. Result: We found thirty-nine such patients with mean age of patients 58.79 ± 12.13 years. Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cardiac diseases were present in 58.97, 87.17, and 23.07% of patients, respectively. Mean oxygen saturation on admission was 85.41% (±7.73). There were no events of hepatotoxicity, altered behavior, or infusion reaction. There was statistically significant improvement in total leukocyte count, absolute lymphocyte counts, and C-reactive protein (p value <0.001, 0.01, and 0.02, respectively) post remdesivir treatment. A total of 60% of patients had improved oxygenation while 13% of patients had no change in oxygen requirement after completion of remdesivir course. Mortality in our study was 28.21%. We did not find any significant benefit of early remdesivir administration (3-6 days of illness) on mortality or days of hospitalization. Conclusion: The use of remdesivir in end-stage kidney disease is safe. Improvement in oxygenation was significant when baseline oxygen requirement was less.
