RESUMO

The performance of a flock of 203 crossbred ewes on a lowland farm was examined. Before lambing the ewes were run in two groups (A and B). Group A (124 ewes) produced significantly fewer marketable lambs as a consequence of neonatal and later losses. The associated clinical features were consistent with Border disease infection and the presence of the virus was demonstrated. These features were not evident in the progeny of group B (79 ewes). The market sale returns of both groups of sheep were compared and the flock performance was contrasted with that of the two previous years. The outbreak of Border disease resulted in a potential reduction of income in excess of 20 per cent. Such a loss supports the necessity for an effective control strategy for Border disease.

RESUMO

A condition of digital dermatitis causing lameness in a dairy herd is described. The lesion was a small circumscribed area of epidermal inflammation in the skin immediately above the coronet between the bulbs of the heel. Topical treatment, consisting of excoriation and application of a gentian violet and tetracycline aerosol spray, was effective. Although the high incidence and rapid onset of the condition suggested an infectious cause, no organism was isolated consistently.

RESUMO

Maternal immunity was produced in Jersey heifers by exposing them to bovine virus diarrhoea-mucosal disease virus before conception. In the following pregnancy this immunity protected the fetuses from transplacental infection arising from challenge of the dams at 100 days gestation with homologous virus. Unprotected Jersey heifers showed a high incidence of death and fetal intrauterine growth retardation associated with transplacental viral infection. Functional normality of the locomotor system was assessed retrospectively from ciné films of each calf after birth, and scored for each of an overlapping series of clinical signs. The progeny of non-immune dams scored significantly lower than calves from the vaccinated heifers.

RESUMO

Passive rewarming of a cold-water stressed foot was evaluated in 33 recovered trenchfoot (TF) patients and 15 uninjured men. Infrared images were recorded prior to immersion, immediately following, and at 1-min intervals for 20 min. Individual baseline temperature (IBT) recovery was used to separate subjects into three groups designated Good and Poor Rewarming Controls (GRC and PRC) and Injured Subjects (Inj Sub). IBTs were significantly less (p less than 0.01) for Inj Sub compared to both GRC and PRC while no difference existed between GRC and PRC. This relationship changed when slopes of and areas under the mean rewarming curves were compared. Both these criteria were significantly greater (p less than 0.01) for GRC than for PRC and Inj Sub, while no difference was noted between PRC and Inj Sub. It could not be determined if the poor response of Inj Sub was inherent or a result of injury. We conclude that previously injured subjects and nearly 60% of a normal population may be at significant risk for cold injury.

RESUMO

Vero cytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 (VTEC O157) infections are a threat to public health. VTEC O157 has been isolated from gulls but evidence of transmission to humans from birds has not been reported. We recount an incident of VTEC O157 infection affecting two sibling children who had no direct contact with farm animals. An outbreak control team was convened to investigate the source of infection, its likely mode of transmission, and to advise on control measures. Human and veterinary samples were examined and the human isolates were found to be identical to an isolate from a sample of bird (rook) faeces. Cattle, rabbit and environmental samples were negative. This report provides evidence that birds may act as intermediaries for human infection with VTEC O157.

RESUMO

The relationships between aerobic physical fitness and selected personality traits measured by the MMPI were investigated for college males engaged in an aerobic conditioning class. Results indicated that physical fitness scores and selected scales on the MMPI are related in college males and that changes in aerobic physical fitness are related to score changes on selected scales of the MMPI for college males who participated in an aerobic exercise program.

RESUMO

Minor injuries are sometimes followed by a potentially disabling syndrome of hyperalgesia, hyperesthesia, allodynia, and sudomotor disturbance as well as, eventually, weakness, muscle atrophy, trophic skin changes, and bone and joint abnormalities. Vasomotor changes frequently present as hypothermia or hyperthermia. Most of the literature refers to this syndrome as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD). To observe possible early RSD changes, we studied 1000 military recruits before and during basic training. Evaluations consisted of lower limb clinical examinations and pain assessment. Infrared images were taken of anterior, posterior, medial, lateral legs, and plantar surface of the feet. If the clinical examination suggested a possible stress fracture, a bone scan was performed. Recruits were studied before training and again each time musculoskeletal complaints arose. The controls were recruits tested before the onset of training who had no musculoskeletal complaints. Two-hundred seven soldiers were injured. Regional hypothermia was noted in 8.6% of all thermograms, with 75% on the left and 25% on the right. The most common injuries causing this phenomenon were ankle pain/sprain and minor foot stress fractures, especially the left metatarsals. Hypothermia occurred within 24 to 48 h, usually beginning in the periphery and ascending proximally, lasting a few days to 6 wk (end of study). None of the recruits developed the full syndrome of RSD during the study period. Whether the continued training, even though modified, helped to prevent this complication or the observed post-traumatic hypothermia has no relationship to RSD needs to be determined.
