RESUMO

We study the structural and dynamical behavior of an A-B diblock chain in the bath of active Brownian particles (ABPs) by Brownian dynamics simulations in two dimensions. We are interested in the situation that the effective interaction between the A segments is attractive, while that between the B segments is repulsive. Therefore, in thermal (nonactive) equilibrium, the A block "folds" into a compact globule, while the B block is in the expanded coil state. Interestingly, we find that the A block could "unfold" sequentially like unknitting a sweater, driven by the surrounding ABPs when the propelling strength on them is beyond a certain value. This threshold value decreases and then levels off as the length of the B block increases. We also find a simple power-law relation between the unfolding time of the A block and the self-propelling strength and an exponential relation between the unfolding time and the length of the B block. Finally, we probe the translational and rotational diffusion of the chain and find that both of them show "super-diffusivity" in a large time window, especially when the self-propelling strength is small and the A block is in the folded state. Such super-diffusivity is due to the strong asymmetric distribution of ABPs around the chain. Our work provides new insights into the behavior of a polymer chain in the environment of active objects.

RESUMO

We study the interplay between active Brownian particles (ABPs) and a "hairy" surface in two-dimensional geometry. We find that the increase of propelling force leads to and enhances inhomogeneous accumulation of ABPs inside the brush region. Oscillation of chain bundles (beating like cilia) is found in company with the formation and disassembly of a dynamic cluster of ABPs at large propelling forces. Meanwhile chains are stretched and pushed down due to the effective shear force by ABPs. The decrease of the average brush thickness with propelling force reflects the growth of the beating amplitude of chain bundles. Furthermore, the beating phenomenon is investigated in a simple single-chain system. We find that the chain swings regularly with a major oscillatory period, which increases with chain length and decreases with the increase of propelling force. We build a theory to describe the phenomenon and the predictions on the relationship between the period and amplitude for various chain lengths, and propelling forces agree very well with simulation data.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of color doppler ultrasound examination of thyroid in occupational health care of radiation-exposed physicians. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-four radiation-exposed physicians (observation group) and sixty-eight non-radiation-exposed physicians (control group) received color doppler ultrasound examination of thyroid using ALOKA SSD-4000 color doppler ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus, and the results were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The anteroposterior diameters of the left lobe, right lobe, and isthmus of the thyroid in the observation group were significantly larger than those in the control group (P < 0.01). Compared with the control group, the observation group had significantly larger internal diameters and peak blood flow velocities during systole of the right superior thyroid artery (P < 0.05, P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in detection rates of thyroid nodules and lymph nodes between the observation group and the control group (18.7% vs 13.2%, P > 0.05; 6.7% vs 1.5%, P > 0.05). The radiation-exposed physicians were exposed to low-dose ionizing radiation with a dose between 0.14 and 1.67 mSv/a. CONCLUSION: The color doppler ultrasound examination of the thyroid can detect early changes in the thyroid of radiation-exposed physicians exposed to long-term and low-dose ionizing radiation.

RESUMO

In this work, we performed coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) simulations of G3, G4, and G5 polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers grafting with fatty acid (FTA) chains. The FTA chains of varying length and grafting densities (50% and 100% of surface terminals) correspond to pH 7 and 5, respectively. Our findings suggested that the structural properties of dendrimers were determined by dendrimer generation, polymerization degrees, and pH. With one exception, the size of the FTA grafting dendrimer shrank after fatty acid attachment. Because of the protonation of the dendrimer's interior amines at low pH, the FTA chains are distributed at the dendrimer's surface group. At pH 7, the FTA chains that have aggregated in the interior of the dendrimer cause chain crowding. Our research provided references on drug encapsulation and the lower toxicity of these hydrophobically modified nanoparticles.

RESUMO

Improving the flow field uniformity of catalytic converter can promote the catalytic conversion of NO to NO2. Firstly, the physical and mathematical models of improved catalytic converter are established, and its accuracy is verified by experiments. Then, the NO catalytic performances of standard and improved catalytic converters are compared, and the influences of structural parameters on its performance are investigated. The results showed that: (1) The gas uniformity, pressure, drop and NO conversion rate of the improved catalytic converter are increased by 0.0643, 6.78%, and 7.0% respectively. (2) As the cell density combination is 700 cpsi/600 cpsi, NO conversion rate reaches the highest, 73.7%, and the gas uniformity is 0.9821. (3) When the tapered height is 20 mm, NO conversion rate reaches the highest, 72.4%, and the gas uniformity is 0.9744. (4) When the high cell density radius is 20 mm, NO conversion rate reaches the highest, 72.1%, and the gas uniformity is 0.9783. (5) When the tapered end face radius is 20 mm, NO conversion rate reaches the highest, 72.0%, and the gas uniformity is 0.9784. The results will provide a very important reference value for improving NO catalytic and reducing vehicle emission.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Studies on the association between breast cancer and occupational hazards are limited, especially in China. This is the first study to explore the relationship between breast cancer and occupational hazards in Beijing, China. DESIGN: A hospital-based case-control study. SETTING: Eight local hospitals in Beijing, China. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 973 female participants, comprising 495 cases and 478 controls, were recruited in our study. We identified patients who underwent diagnosis for breast cancer at one of the eight local hospitals in Beijing between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2019; controls were individuals randomly matched from the same hospital where the cases were confirmed. MAIN OUTCOME AND MEASURE: Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was used to estimate the occupational risk factors associated with breast cancer, including night shift work history and work posture. RESULTS: In the case group, the breast cancer type was mainly invasive, which accounted for 85.66% of all the breast cancer patients. Five risk factors were included in the final LASSO model, including body mass index (BMI), marital status, menopause, night shift work history and work posture. Furthermore, these risk factors were considered for multivariate logistic regression, and the analyses suggested that the risk of breast cancer was significantly associated with higher BMI (≥28.0 kg/m2, OR: 2.85, 95% CI: 1.29 to 6.30); married status: married (OR: 2.67, 95% CI: 1.28 to 5.56) or divorced (OR: 4.51, 95% CI: 1.84 to 11.07); menopause (OR: 6.89, 95% CI: 5.07 to 9.36); night shift work (OR: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.11 to 2.11); and maximum standing or walking, and minimal sitting (OR: 1.80, 95% CI: 1.19 to 2.73). CONCLUSION: Breast cancer is associated with occupational risk factors. Night shift work, especially in a standing posture, can increase the incidence of breast cancer in women in Beijing, China.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of fat content on the textural and in vivo buccal breakdown properties of soy yogurt (SY) at different pH (5.4, 5.0, and 4.6). The microbial analysis, textural and rheological properties, and interfacial protein composition of all the samples were monitored. Microbial results suggested that the increased fat content in SY-5.0 and SY-4.6 resulted in significantly high viable cell counts of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Textural studies demonstrated that the presence of a low fat content (1-3%) significantly reduced the hardness, springiness, and gumminess of the sample, but this effect was negligible with the addition of fat content (4-5%). The apparent viscosity and thixotropy of the SY-4.6 sample increased as the fat content increased. in vivo buccal digestion showed that a high fat content (2-4%) reduced the number of chews and chewing durations, which might be correlated with high oil droplet release (%) after mastication.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) technique of threshold-tracking short-interval intracortical inhibition (T-SICI) has been proposed as a diagnostic tool for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Most of these studies have used a circular coil, whereas a figure-of-8 coil is usually recommended for paired-pulse TMS measurements. The aim of this study was to compare figure-of-8 and circular coils for T-SICI in the upper limb, with special attention to reproducibility, and the pain or discomfort experienced by the subjects. METHODS: Twenty healthy subjects (aged: 45.5 ±â€¯6.7, mean ±â€¯SD, 9 females, 11 males) underwent two examinations with each coil, in morning and afternoon sessions on the same day, with T-SICI measured at interstimulus intervals (ISIs) from 1-7 ms. After each examination the subjects rated degree of pain/discomfort from 0 to 10 using a numerical rating scale (NRS). RESULTS: Mean T-SICI was higher for the figure-of-8 than for the circular coil at ISI of 2 ms (p < 0.05) but did not differ at other ISIs. Intra-subject variability did not differ between coils, but mean inhibition from 1-3.5 ms was less variable between subjects with the figure-of-8 coil (SD 7.2% vs. 11.2% RMT, p < 0.05), and no such recordings were without inhibition (vs. 6 with the circular coil). The subjects experienced less pain/discomfort with the figure-of-8 coil (mean NRS: 1.9 ±â€¯1.28 vs 2.8 ±â€¯1.60, p < 0.005). DISCUSSION: The figure-of-8 coil may have better applicability in patients, due to the lower incidence of lack of inhibition in healthy subjects, and the lower experience of pain or discomfort.

RESUMO

Understanding the interactions of dendrimers as drug/gene delivery vectors with proteins is important for functional optimization. Here, atomistic molecular dynamics simulations are employed to study the interactions between six positively-charged polyamidoamine dendrimers of the second generation (G2 PAMAM) and G-actin. We find that the structure of G-actin is relatively stable after dendrimers' binding. PAMAM dendrimers also do not significantly change the secondary structure of G-actin. Furthermore, we find the formation of dendrimer-actin complex is mainly driven by electrostatic interactions. Moreover, we suggest the secondary structure change of local domains of G-actin is probably responsible to the inhibition of actin polymerization.

RESUMO

Gene therapy is an important therapeutic strategy in the treatment of a wide range of genetic disorders. Polymers forming stable complexes with nucleic acids (NAs) are non-viral gene carriers. The self-assembly of polymers and nucleic acids is typically a complex process that involves many types of interaction at different scales. Electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic interaction, and hydrogen bonds are three important and prevalent interactions in the polymer/nucleic acid system. Electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds are the main driving forces for the condensation of nucleic acids, while hydrophobic interactions play a significant role in the cellular uptake and endosomal escape of polymer-nucleic acid complexes. To design high-efficiency polymer candidates for the DNA and siRNA delivery, it is necessary to have a detailed understanding of the interactions between them in solution. In this chapter, we survey the roles of the three important interactions between polymers and nucleic acids during the formation of polyplexes and summarize recent understandings of the linear polyelectrolyte-NA interactions and dendrimer-NA interactions. We also review recent progress optimizing the gene delivery system by tuning these interactions.

RESUMO

The reed pulping black liquor is used as a sample. Researches of (1) combined effect of ultrasound( US)/polyferric sulphate (PFS)/hydrogen peroxide (H2O2); (2) effects of the horn tip areas; (3) effect of dose of PFS were carried. Extrapolation of these experiments indicated treatment results are possibly related to complex chemical compositions in the reed pulping black liquor.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To know their real epidemiological histories in 1,091 probale cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) without definite history of contact with SARS patients in the first survey. METHODS: All the probable SARS cases until June 9, 2003 without definite history of contact with SARS patients in the first epidemiological survey were included in a re-survey with questionnaire. The second survey was carried out during June 9 to 30, 2003. RESULTS: The results showed that history of contact with other SARS patients was obtained in 15.9% of 1 091 probale SRAS cases in the second survey, transmission of SARS to others was found in 10.5% of them, and source of infection in hospital was found in 46.5%. Comprehensive judgement based on epidemiological history showed that probale history of contact with SARS patients could be found in 72.9% of 1,091 probale cases of SARS in the second survey. CONCLUSION: Source of infection could be found through additional survey in part of probale cases of SARS without it in initial epidemiological survey.

RESUMO

Degradation effect of organic pollutant on pentachlorophenol (PCP) is researched by ultrasound. PCP is treated by low frequency (16 kHz) and high frequency (800 +/- 1 kHz), and bi-frequency. The results of investigation on the ultrasonic destruction of PCP showed that the rate of PCP degradation at the same conditions is the highest at bi-frequency, and the lowest at 16 kHz. In the presence of Fenton type reagent the degradation rate of PCP is the highest at bi-frequency (20.93 times) as compared to the stirring system. This ratio is 4.91 and 1.06 at 800 kHz and 16 kHz, respectively. The studies showed the bi-frequency is an effective method for pollutants degradation, but it is need make further study. Taking 800 kHz for example, under the same conditions, the smaller pH of the solution, the higher is the reaction rate. A similar situation applied to TOC, but the TOC removal lags behind degradation of PCP. This indicated the PCP is not completely mineralized. The ultrasound is somewhat enhanced for degradation of PCP and mineralization with only addition of CuSO4, but the combination of ultrasound and Fenton type reagent is effective method for PCP degradation and mineralization. The rate of PCP degradation and TOC removal appeared to follow pseudo-first-order reaction kinetic law.

RESUMO

The effect of pH, amount of cast iron and initial concentration on the removal ratio of Basic Green by cast iron combined with ultrasound was investigated. It was shown that the reduction of Basic Green was enhanced by ultrasound. In all combined systems, the decolorization efficiency is more than 95%, but removal ratio of CODcr decreased with the increasing pH or initial dye concentration and increased with the increase of the amount of cast iron.

RESUMO

Superspreading events were pivotal in the global spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). We investigated superspreading in one transmission chain early in Beijing's epidemic. Superspreading was defined as transmission of SARS to at least eight contacts. An index patient with onset of SARS 2 months after hospital admission was the source of four generations of transmission to 76 case-patients, including 12 healthcare workers and several hospital visitors. Four (5%) case circumstances met the superspreading definition. Superspreading appeared to be associated with older age (mean 56 vs. 44 years), case fatality (75% vs. 16%, p = 0.02, Fisher exact test), number of close contacts (36 vs. 0.37) and attack rate among close contacts (43% vs. 18.5%, p < 0.025). Delayed recognition of SARS in a hospitalized patient permitted transmission to patients, visitors, and healthcare workers. Older age and number of contacts merit investigation in future studies of superspreading.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the characteristics of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) transmission in the population base on analyzing the first imported case and the chains of transmission. METHODS: For the first imported SARS case and cases who were transmitted by the index case, epidemiological investigations were conducted using the guidelines for surveillance and case investigation issued by the Ministry of Health. Data as the date of onset of symptoms, date of hospitalization, contact history etc. for each of the cases and their close contacts were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: The first imported SARS case introduced to Beijing had infected 9 people within the family and at the hospital, with two of whom died of the same disease. The incubation period for that index case was 4 days, and that for the cases considered to be the secondary and tertiary generations were 7 and 8 days, respectively. The shorter the incubation period, the longer the fever would last and clinically more severe. CONCLUSION: One of the epidemiological characteristics of SARS in Beijing was noticed that the disease clustered in families and hospitals. Infection through droplets and close contact has been viewed as the primary mode of transmission.
