Biological control is one of the methods available for control of Aedes aegypti populations. We used experimental microcosms to evaluate the effects of actual predation and predation risk by dragonfly larvae (Odonata) on larval development, adult longevity, and adult size of Ae. aegypti. We used six treatments: control, removal, variable density cues (Cues VD), fixed density cues (Cues FD), variable density predator (Predator VD), and fixed density predator (Predator FD) (n = 5 each). Predator treatments received one dragonfly larva. Cue treatments were composed of crushed Ae. aegypti larvae released into the microcosm. For the FD treatments, we maintained a larval density of 200 individuals. The average mortality of Ae. aegypti larvae in the Predator VD treatment was used as the standard mortality for the other treatments. Mosquitoes from the Predator VD and Cues VD treatments developed faster, and adults were larger and had greater longevity compared to all other treatments, likely due to the higher food availability from larval density reduction. High larval density negatively affected larval developmental time, adult size, and longevity. Males were less sensitive to density-dependent effects. Results from this study suggest that the presence of predators may lead to the emergence of adult mosquitoes with greater fitness, causing an overall positive effect on Ae. aegypti population growth rates.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic hit Portugal in March 2020, causing widespread disruption to various aspects of society. While extensive research has been conducted on the significance of socio-economic disparities in infection risk, this study aims to enhance our understanding of their evolving relationship over time by analysing four distinct periods in 2020. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This retrospective observational ecological study included individuals residing in the Primary Healthcare Cluster areas of Almada-Seixal and Western Lisbon and Oeiras, who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 through a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test between the 2nd of March and the 8th of November of 2020. Using incidence rates for each specific neighbourhood (n = 29) and period, we explored the relationship between neighbourhood-level socio-economic variables and the risk of infection using negative-binomial regression models. RESULTS: In the analysed period, a total of 8562 confirmed COVID-19 cases were identified. Overall incidence rates for each period were sequentially 2.74, 5.03, 3.99 and 14.29 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 person-days. Housing overcrowding, illiteracy rate and place of birth were associated with increased risk of infection, while age, congregate living, and employment in the secondary sector exhibited the opposite association. No association was consistent across all time periods. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support the idea that the influence of socio-economic determinants of health is not immutable throughout time. In a pandemic context where information, knowledge, beliefs, and behaviours are ever-changing and evolving, a dynamic, inclusive, and adaptable approach to disease control can lead to a more equitable distribution of improved outcomes, benefiting all strata of society.

The establishment of an invasive species depends on reproductive success and dispersion capability in the new environment. One of the striking examples of invasion in urban environments is the mosquito Aedes aegypti Linnaeus, 1762 (Culicidae). The success of this species is primarily attributed to its ability to colonize urban environments, and some of the important adaptive strategies associated with this ability is the preference for humans as a blood source and intense occupation of residential (indoor) environments. This study evaluated the effects of location (indoor vs. outdoor) and water nutrient level (% organic matter) on the oviposition preference of A. aegypti in an urban environment. We used oviposition choice experiments to evaluate mosquito oviposition in containers holding 1:1 vs 1:0 ratios of water: organic matter placed indoors and outdoors. Eggs were sampled once per week for nine weeks. Our results revealed a strong oviposition preference for outdoor containers, with a significant preference for containers with higher concentrations of organic matter during the fifth to ninth weeks. However, mosquitoes occupying indoor environments did not prefer to lay eggs in containers with lower levels of organic matter. A better understanding of the preferences of A. aegypti regarding the nutrient level and location of oviposition containers can increase our understanding of the behavioral factors allowing mosquitoes to utilize anthropogenic environments.

BACKGROUND: In Portugal, the routine clinical practice of speech and language therapists (SLTs) in treating children with all types of speech sound disorder (SSD) continues to be articulation therapy (AT). There is limited use of phonological therapy (PT) or phonological awareness training in Portugal. Additionally, at an international level there is a focus on collecting information on and differentiating between the effectiveness of PT and AT for children with different types of phonologically based SSD, as well as on the role of phonological awareness in remediating SSD. It is important to collect more evidence for the most effective and efficient type of intervention approach for different SSDs and for these data to be collected from diverse linguistic and cultural perspectives. AIMS: To evaluate the effectiveness of a PT and AT approach for treatment of 14 Portuguese children, aged 4.0-6.7 years, with a phonologically based SSD. METHODS & PROCEDURES: The children were randomly assigned to one of the two treatment approaches (seven children in each group). All children were treated by the same SLT, blind to the aims of the study, over three blocks of a total of 25 weekly sessions of intervention. Outcome measures of phonological ability (percentage of consonants correct (PCC), percentage occurrence of different phonological processes and phonetic inventory) were taken before and after intervention. A qualitative assessment of intervention effectiveness from the perspective of the parents of participants was included. OUTCOMES & RESULTS: Both treatments were effective in improving the participants' speech, with the children receiving PT showing a more significant improvement in PCC score than those receiving the AT. Children in the PT group also showed greater generalization to untreated words than those receiving AT. Parents reported both intervention approaches to be as effective in improving their children's speech. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: The PT (combination of expressive phonological tasks, phonological awareness, listening and discrimination activities) proved to be an effective integrated method of improving phonological SSD in children. These findings provide some evidence for Portuguese SLTs to employ PT with children with phonologically based SSD.

BACKGROUND: Airway and vascular remodeling may play a prominent role in the clinical severity of severe refractory asthma (SRA). Angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1) is an essential mediator of angiogenesis by establishing vascular integrity, whereas angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) acts as its natural inhibitor. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the levels of angiopoietins in sputum supernatants of patients with SRA and to investigate the possible associations with mediators and cells involved in both the inflammatory and the vascular remodeling processes. METHODS: Thirty-eight patients with SRA, 35 patients with moderate asthma, and 20 healthy subjects were studied. All participants underwent lung function tests, bronchial hyperresponsiveness assessment and sputum induction for cell count identification and Ang-1, Ang-2, VEGF, TGF-ß1, Cys-LTs, MMP-2, IL-13, ECP, and IL-8 measurement in supernatants. Airway vascular permeability (AVP) index was also assessed. RESULTS: Ang-1 (ng/ml) and Ang-2 (pg/ml) levels were significantly elevated in patients with SRA compared with patients with moderate asthma and control subjects [median, interquartile ranges: 30 (17-39) vs 7.5 (5-11) vs 4.7 (3.8-5.9) respectively, P < 0.001; and 506 (400-700) vs 190 (146-236) vs 96 (89-120) respectively, P < 0.001]. Regression analysis showed a significant positive association between Ang-2 and AVP index, MMP-2, Ang-1, and VEGF in SRA. A weak association was also observed between Ang-1 and sputum eosinophils% in SRA. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that both angiopoietins levels are higher in SRA compared with moderate asthma and healthy subjects. In SRA, Ang-2 is associated with mediators involved in both the inflammatory and the vascular remodeling processes.

AIMS: The present work aimed at identifying the metabolic response to acid stress and the mechanisms that lead to cell tolerance and adaptation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two strategies were used: screening deletion mutants for cell growth at neutral and acid pH compared to wild type and measurement by qPCR of the expression of yeast genes involved in different pathways. CONCLUSIONS: The results complement our previous findings and showed that the Cell Wall Integrity pathway is the main mechanism for cell tolerance to acid pH, and this damage triggers the protein kinase C (PKC) pathway mainly via the Wsc1p membrane sensor. In addition, cell wall injury might mimic the effects of high osmotic shock and activates the High Osmolarity Glycerol pathway, which amplifies the signal in the upper part of PKC pathway and leads to the activation of Ca(2+) channels by SLT2 overexpression and this Ca(2+) influx further activates calcineurin. Together, these mechanisms induce the expression of genes involved in cell cycle regulation and cell wall regeneration. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These interactions are responsible for long-term adaptation of yeast cells to the acidic environment, and the results could drive future work on the genetic modification of yeast strains for high tolerance to the stresses of the bioethanol fermentation process.

This study examined whether the intensity of endurance stimuli modifies the adaptation in strength and endurance following concurrent training and whether the acute molecular response to concurrent exercise is affected by training status. Using a parallel group design, trained cyclists were randomized to either resistance exercise followed by moderate intensity continuous training (RES + MICT, n = 6), or resistance exercise followed by work matched high intensity interval training (RES + HIIT, n = 7), across an 8 weeks training programme. A single RES + MICT or RES + HIIT exercise stimulus was completed 1 week before and within 5 days of completing the training programme, to assess phosphorylation of protein kinases of the mTOR and AMPK signaling pathways. There were no main effects of time or group on the phosphorylation of protein kinases in response to concurrent exercise stimulus pre- and post-training intervention (p > 0.05). Main effects of time were observed for all maximal strength exercises; back-squat, split-squat, and calf-raise (p < 0.001), with all improving post intervention. A time × group interaction was present for V̇O2peak, with the RES + MICT group displaying a preferential response to that of the RES + HIIT group (p = 0.010). No time nor group effects were observed for 5 min time trial performance, power at 2 and 4 mmol L-1 (p > 0.05). Whilst preliminary data due to limited sample size the intensity of endurance activity had no effect on performance outcomes, following concurrent training. Further, the acute molecular response to a concurrent exercise stimulus was comparable before and after the training intervention, suggesting that training status had no effect on the molecular responses assessed.

Corn crop, due to its easy adaptation to the most diverse agroecosystems, spreads throughout the different regions of the world, making it one of the most important agricultural crops. In this crop, pest insects stand out for causing losses both in the field and in warehouses. The application of essential oils can be an important technique to be investigated in the management of insects due to its known insecticidal activity and low risk to the environment. The objective of the work was to value the insecticide and repellent effect of essential oils of exotic lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and native lemongrass (Elionurus sp.) for the management of maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais (Mots., 1855, Coleoptera: Curculionidae)). The chemical analysis of the oils made by CG-MS showed that the chemical composition of the native and exotic lemongrass is similar, however, the exotic species presented a greater number of compounds. The essential oils of native and exotic lemon grass have efficiency on maize weevil mortality, and it is verified that the increase in the applied dose reflects in a reduction in the insect's exposure time for death to occur. The essential oil of both species showed repellent capacity at all times evaluated. Thus, it can be said that both species have the capacity and potential to be used in the management of corn weevil, and can be an alternative for smallhorders farmers and organic production.

This study examined whether intensity of endurance stimulus within a concurrent training paradigm influenced the phosphorylation of signaling proteins associated with the mTOR and AMPK networks. Eight male cyclists completed (1) resistance exercise (RES), 6 × 8 squats at 80% 1-RM; (2) resistance exercise and moderate intensity cycling of 40 min at 65% V̇O2peak, (RES + MIC); (3) resistance exercise and high intensity interval cycling of 40 min with 6 alternating 3 min intervals of 85 and 45% V̇O2peak (RES + HIIC), in a cross-over design. Muscle biopsies were collected at rest and 3 h post-RES. There was a main effect of condition for mTORS2448 (p = 0.043), with a greater response in the RES + MIC relative to RES condition (p = 0.033). There was a main effect of condition for AMPKα2T172 (p = 0.041), with a greater response in RES + MIC, relative to both RES + HIIC (p = 0.026) and RES (p = 0.046). There were no other condition effects for the remaining protein kinases assessed (p > 0.05). These data do not support a molecular interference effect in cyclists under controlled conditions. There was no intensity-dependent regulation of AMPK, nor differential activation of anabolism with the manipulation of endurance exercise intensity.

The use of medicinal plants for disease prevention, treatment and cure is an ancient practice used by humanity, and many plants species are used in bioprospecting research. In this context, its stands out Eugenia uniflora L., populary known as pitangueira and belongs to the Myrtaceae family, with a wide geographic distribution and native of Brazil. In view of the therapeutic qualities of the plant and the lack of the studies on its seeds, the present study had as objective to evaluate the phytochemical profile of the extracts of Eugenia uniflora L. seeds, from different solvents, as well as their antibacterial activity, antioxidant and its inhibitory effect of intestinal disaccharidases. Results showed a high content of phenolic compounds and total flavonoids, thus characterizing antioxidant activity, also highlighting the best bacteriostatic action for the Gram positive strain of Staphylococcus aureus in the ethanolic fraction. Regarding the disaccharidases, a strong inhibitory action was observed for all concentrations, evidencing a antihyperglycemic potential. The present research allowed to concluded that Eugenia uniflora L. seeds have promising biological activities for the industrial sector, but a more detailed investigation is needed regarding their bioactive compounds.

It is known that non-cachectic patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) respond well to pulmonary rehabilitation, but whether cachectic COPD patients are capable of adaptive responses is both important and unknown. 10 cachectic and 19 non-cachectic COPD patients undertook high-intensity cycling training, at the same relative intensity, for 45 min x day(-1), 3 days x week(-1) for 10 weeks. Before and after rehabilitation vastus lateralis muscle biopsies were analysed morphologically and for the expression of muscle remodelling factors (insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, myogenic differentiation factor D (MyoD), tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB and myostatin) and key components of ubiquitin-mediated proteolytic systems (muscle ring finger protein (MURF)-1 and Atrogin-1). Rehabilitation improved peak work-rate and the 6-min walk distance similarly in non-cachectic (18+/-3% and 42+/-13 m, respectively) and cachectic (16+/-2% and 53+/-16 m, respectively) patients, but quality of life only improved in non-cachectic COPD. Mean muscle fibre cross-sectional area increased in both groups, but significantly less in cachectic (7+/-2%) than in non-cachectic (11+/-2%) patients. Both groups equally decreased the proportion of type IIb fibres and increased muscle capillary/fibre ratio. IGF-I mRNA expression increased in both groups, but IGF-I protein levels increased more in non-cachectic COPD. MyoD was upregulated, whereas myostatin was downregulated at the mRNA and protein level only in non-cachectic patients. Whilst rehabilitation had no effect on TNF-alpha expression, it decreased the activation of the transcription factor NF-kappaB in both groups by the same amount. Atrogin-1 and MURF-1 expression were increased in cachectic COPD, but it was decreased in non-cachectic patients. Cachectic COPD patients partially retain the capacity for peripheral muscle remodelling in response to rehabilitation and are able to increase exercise capacity as much as those without cachexia, even if they exhibit both quantitative and qualitative differences in the type of muscle fibre remodelling in response to exercise training.

AIMS: This work aimed to identify the molecular mechanism that allows yeast cells to survive at low pH environments such as those of bioethanol fermentation. METHODS AND RESULTS: The industrial strain JP1 cells grown at pH 2 was evaluated by microarray analysis showing that most of the genes induced at low pH were part of the general stress response (GSR). Further, an acid-tolerant yeast mutant was isolated by adaptive selection that was prone to grow at low pH in inorganic but weak organic acid. It showed higher viability under acid-temperature synergistic treatment. However, it was deficient in some physiological aspects that are associated with defects in protein kinase A (PKA) pathway. Microarray analysis showed the induction of genes involved in inhibition of RNA and protein synthesis. CONCLUSIONS: The results point out that low pH activates GSR, mainly heat shock response, that is important for long-term cell survival and suggest that a fine regulatory PKA-dependent mechanism that might affect cell cycle in order to acquire tolerance to acid environment. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These findings might guide the construction of a high-fermentative stress-tolerant industrial yeast strain that can be used in complex industrial fermentation processes.

Oxidative stress (OS) is well documented in asthma, but so far, little data has been reported in nonasthmatic patients with Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (SAR). The aim of this study is to investigate the degree of OS and airway inflammation in patients with SAR, with and without concomitant asthma (SAR+A), using breath markers in exhaled air and in Exhaled Breath Condensate (EBC). In addition, the effects of natural allergen exposure and intranasal steroid treatment on these markers were evaluated. Exhaled NO (eNO) and CO, combined with measurements of 8-Isoprostane (Iso-8), Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and nitrate/nitrite in EBC, were performed in 23 patients, 11 with SAR and 12 with SAR+A, and 16 healthy subjects. Iso-8 and LTB4 were significantly increased in both groups of patients (median values 43.6 pg/ ml and 138.4 pg/ml in SAR group; 38.9 pg/ml, and 164.6 pg/ml in SAR+A group respectively; p>0.05) compared to healthy subjects (18.6 pg/ml and 7.8 pg/ml; p<0.05). Nitrate/nitrite and eNO levels were elevated in both groups compared to controls, but were significantly higher in the SAR+A compared to SAR group (nitrate/nitrite 9 microM and 3.9 microM; p=0.025; and eNO 18.5 ppb and 12.5 ppb, respectively; p>0.05). Nasal steroids caused significant reduction in LTB4 and 8-isoprostane levels in both groups of patients (p<0.05), while nitrate levels and eNO concentration were little affected by nasal treatment. OS markers were decreased at normal levels out of pollen season. Natural allergen exposure induces OS and airway inflammation, as assessed by measurements of markers in EBC and exhaled air, in patients with SAR who have no clinical signs of lower airway involvement. Besides, intranasal steroid treatment may have a regulatory role in the OS.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Superoxide anions produced during vascular disease scavenge nitric oxide (NO), thereby reducing its biological activity. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether reactive oxygen species (ROS) have a direct effect on soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) subunit levels and function and to ascertain the mechanism(s) involved. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Rat aortic smooth muscle cells (RASM) or freshly isolated vessels were exposed to reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generating agents and sGC subunit expression was determined at the mRNA and/or protein level. cGMP accumulation was also determined in RASM exposed to ROS. KEY RESULTS: Incubation of smooth muscle cells with H(2)O(2), xanthine/xanthine oxidase (X/XO) or menadione sodium bisulphite (MSB) significantly decreased protein levels of alpha1 and beta1 subunits of sGC and reduced SNP-induced cGMP formation. Similarly, sGC expression was reduced in freshly isolated vessels exposed to ROS-generating agents. The ROS-triggered inhibition of alpha1 and beta1 levels was not blocked by proteasome inhibitors, suggesting that decreased sGC protein was not due to protein degradation through this pathway. Real time RT-PCR analysis demonstrated a 68% reduction in steady state mRNA levels for the alpha1 subunit following exposure to H(2)O(2). In addition, alpha1 promoter-driven luciferase activity in RASM decreased by 60% after H(2)O(2) treatment. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: We conclude that oxidative stress triggers a decrease in sGC expression and activity that results from reduced sGC steady state mRNA levels. Altered sGC expression is expected to contribute to the changes in vascular tone and remodeling observed in diseases associated with ROS overproduction.

Industrial ethanol fermentation is a complex microbiological process to which yeast cells must adapt for survival. One of the mechanisms for adaptation is thought to involve chromosome rearrangements. We found that changes in chromosome banding patterns measured by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis can also be produced in laboratory media under simulated industrial conditions. Based on analysis of their generational variation, we found that these chromosome changes were specific to the genetic backgrounds of the initial strains. We conclude that chromosome rearrangements could be one of the factors involved in yeast cell adaptation to the industrial environment.

The use of medicinal plants for disease prevention, treatment and cure is an ancient practice used by humanity, and many plants species are used in bioprospecting research. In this context, its stands out Eugenia uniflora L., populary known as pitangueira and belongs to the Myrtaceae family, with a wide geographic distribution and native of Brazil. In view of the therapeutic qualities of the plant and the lack of the studies on its seeds, the present study had as objective to evaluate the phytochemical profile of the extracts of Eugenia uniflora L. seeds, from different solvents, as well as their antibacterial activity, antioxidant and its inhibitory effect of intestinal disaccharidases. Results showed a high content of phenolic compounds and total flavonoids, thus characterizing antioxidant activity, also highlighting the best bacteriostatic action for the Gram positive strain of Staphylococcus aureus in the ethanolic fraction. Regarding the disaccharidases, a strong inhibitory action was observed for all concentrations, evidencing a antihyperglycemic potential. The present research allowed to concluded that Eugenia uniflora L. seeds have promising biological activities for the industrial sector, but a more detailed investigation is needed regarding their bioactive compounds.


A utilização de plantas com fins medicinais para prevenção, tratamento e cura de doenças é uma prática antiga utilizada pela humanidade, sendo que muitas espécies vegetais são usadas para a pesquisa da bioprospecção. Neste contexto, destaca-se a Eugenia uniflora L., conhecida popularmente como pitangueira e pertencente à família Myrtaceae, com ampla distribuição geográfica e nativa do Brasil. Diante das qualidades terapêuticas da planta e a falta de estudos sobre suas sementes, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o perfil fitoquímico dos extratos das sementes de Eugenia uniflora L. a partir de diferentes solventes, bem como sua atividade antibacteriana, antioxidante e seu efeito inibidor de dissacaridases intestinais. Os resultados mostraram um alto teor de compostos fenólicos e flavonóides totais, caracterizando a atividade antioxidante, destacando também a melhor ação bacteriostática para a cepa Gram positiva de Staphylococcus aureus na fração etanólica. Em relação às dissacaridases, uma forte ação inibitória foi observada para todas as concentrações, evidenciando um potencial anti-hiperglicêmico. A presente pesquisa permitiu concluir que as sementes de Eugenia uniflora L. apresentam atividades biológicas promissoras para o setor industrial, mas é necessária uma investigação mais detalhada de seus compostos bioativos.

It is clear that there is a genetic component associated with the ageing process. Although evolutionary theory has suggested that the activity of certain genes may facilitate ageing by favouring resource utilisation by the germ cells at the expense of somatic cells, there is reason to believe that the senescent phenotype, which is the endpoint of the ageing process, may be due to alterations in the levels of expression of other genes. To investigate this situation we have used the differential display technique to survey gene expression during ageing of the rat brain, heart and liver. By optimising this technique it is possible to identify up to 10000-14000 PCR products, which represent genes expressed in the tissue under study. Interestingly, only a relatively small cohort (approximately 2%) of these genes appear to show significant changes in their levels of expression during ageing. Characterisation of the latter has so far revealed certain genes, such as glial fibrillary acidic protein, which are associated with the senescent phenotype. It has also revealed that the level of fos, a component of the AP-1 transcription factor, decreases with age, which has implications for AP-1 regulated genes. The differential display technique has also revealed an increase in mitochondrial RNA during ageing of the heart, which may be due to a gene dosage effect caused by the presence of increased numbers of mitochondrial genomes in myocytes in old age. The differential display technique therefore appears to offer a powerful tool for identifying genes which contribute to the emergence of a senescent phenotype.

Ageing research in Greece is well established. Research groups located in universities, research institutes or public hospitals are studying various and complementary aspects of ageing. These research activities include (a) functional analysis of Clusterin/Apolipoprotein J, studies in healthy centenarians and work on protein degradation and the role of proteasome during senescence at the National Hellenic Research Foundation; (b) regulation of cell proliferation and tissue formation, a nationwide study of determinants and markers of successful ageing in Greek centenarians and studies of histone gene expression and acetylation at the National Center for Scientific Research, Demokritos; (c) work on amyloid precursor protein and Presenilin 1 at the University of Athens; (d) oxidative stress-induced DNA damage and the role of oncogenes in senescence at the University of Ioannina; (e) studies in the connective tissue at the University of Patras; (f) proteomic studies at the Biomedical Sciences Research Center Alexander Fleming; (g) work on Caenorhabditis elegans at the Foundation for Research and Technology; (h) the role of ultraviolet radiation in skin ageing at Andreas Sygros Hospital; (i) follow-up studies in healthy elderly at the Athens Home for the Aged; and (j) socio-cultural aspects of ageing at the National School of Public Health. These research activities are well recognized by the international scientific community as it is evident by the group's very good publication records as well as by their direct funding from both European Union and USA. This article summarizes these research activities and discuss future directions and efforts towards the further development of the ageing field in Greece.

RESUMO

Aging is a universal and inevitable phenomenon that affects nearly all animal species. It can be considered the product of an interaction between genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, which in turn influence longevity that varies between and within species. It has been proposed not only that the aging process is under genetic control, but that it can also be considered a result of the failure of homeostasis due to the accumulation of damage. This review article discusses these issues, focusing on the function of genes that associate with aging and longevity, as well as on the molecular mechanisms that control cell survival and maintenance during aging.

The spermatozoa of Exomalopsis auropilosa and Paratetrapedia (Lophopedia) sp. are long and slender, measuring about 374 microm and 370 microm in length of which the head region measures approximately 25.8 and 28.3 microm, respectively. The head consists of an acrosome formed by an acrosomal vesicle covering a perforatorium, which presents a paracrystalline organization in Paratetrapedia (Lophopedia) sp. and a nucleus. This latter measures about 24 microm in Exomalopsis auropilosa and 27 microm in Paratetrapedia (Lophopedia) sp., and has compact chromatin. The nucleus is attached to the flagellum by an electron dense material and centriolar adjunct is observed between it and smaller mitochondrial derivative. In this flagellar region only one accessory body is observed, which occurs between the larger mitochondrial derivative and the axoneme. The flagellum consists in a typical axoneme, 9+9+2 microtubules, two mitochondrial derivatives and two accessory bodies. The two mitochondrial derivatives are asymmetric in both length and diameter, and paracrystalline material appears only in the larger mitochondrial derivative. The structure and ultrastructure of the spermatozoa of the bee species here described are similar to the majority of sperm found in the other Hymenoptera and may be a contribution for future phylogenetic analysis of Apidae.
