RESUMO

Human cadaveric donors are essential for research in the anatomical sciences. However, many research papers in the anatomical sciences often omit a statement regarding the ethical use of the donor cadavers or, as no current standardized versions exist, use language that is extremely varied. To rectify this issue, 22 editors-in-chief of anatomical journals, representing 17 different countries, developed standardized and simplified language that can be used by authors of studies that use human cadaveric tissues. The goal of these editor recommendations is to standardize the writing approach by which the ethical use of cadaveric donors is acknowledged in anatomical studies that use donor human cadavers. Such sections in anatomical papers will help elevate our discipline and promote standardized language use in others non anatomy journals and also other media outlets that use cadaveric tissues.

The reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships in the primate fossil record is dependent upon a thorough understanding of the phylogenetic utility of craniodental characters. Here, we test three previously proposed hypotheses for the propensity of primate craniomandibular data to exhibit homoplasy, using a study design based on the relative congruence between cranial distance matrices and a consensus genetic distance matrix ("genetic congruence") for papionin taxa: 1) matrices based on cranial regions subjected to less masticatory strain are more genetically congruent than high-strain cranial matrices; 2) matrices based on cranial regions developing earlier in ontogeny are more genetically congruent than matrices based on regions that develop later; and 3) matrices based on cranial regions with greater anatomical/functional complexity are more genetically congruent than matrices based on anatomically simpler regions. Morphological distance matrices based on the shape of 15 different cranial regions, delineated on the basis of previous catarrhine studies, were statistically compared to a matrix of known genetic distances in papionins. Since sexual dimorphism and allometry are known to characterize this clade, several analytical iterations were conducted: 1) mixed-sex, male-only, and female-only analyses and 2) with and without an allometric scaling adjustment. Across all datasets, the chondrocranium matrix was the most consistently correlated with genetic distances, which is also consistent with previous studies of cercopithecoid taxa; however, there was no support for the internal predictions of the three hypotheses tested. Allometric scaling corrections had the largest impact on the genetic congruence of facial shape matrices, a result consistent with previous studies that have described facial homoplasy in papionin taxa. These findings differ from patterns described for hominoid taxa, suggesting that no single predictive criterion can explain phylogenetic utility of cranial datasets across catarrhine primate taxa. Many of the differences in morphological-genetic matrix correlations could result from different levels of phenotypic integration and evolvability in cercopithecoids and hominoids, suggesting that further study of these phenomena in extant primates is warranted.

Molecular-based characterizations of Andean peoples are traditionally conducted in the service of elucidating continent-level evolutionary processes in South America. Consequently, genetic variation among "western" Andean populations is often represented in relation to variation among "eastern" Amazon and Orinoco River Basin populations. This west-east contrast in patterns of population genetic variation is typically attributed to large-scale phenomena, such as dual founder colonization events or differing long-term microevolutionary histories. However, alternative explanations that consider the nature and causes of population genetic diversity within the Andean region remain underexplored. Here we examine population genetic diversity in the Peruvian Central Andes using data from the mtDNA first hypervariable region and Y-chromosome short tandem repeats among 17 newly sampled populations and 15 published samples. Using this geographically comprehensive data set, we first reassessed the currently accepted pattern of western versus eastern population genetic structure, which our results ultimately reject: mtDNA population diversities were lower, rather than higher, within Andean versus eastern populations, and only highland Y-chromosomes exhibited significantly higher within-population diversities compared with eastern groups. Multiple populations, including several highland samples, exhibited low genetic diversities for both genetic systems. Second, we explored whether the implementation of Inca state and Spanish colonial policies starting at about ad 1400 could have substantially restructured population genetic variation and consequently constitute a primary explanation for the extant pattern of population diversity in the Peruvian Central Andes. Our results suggest that Peruvian Central Andean population structure cannot be parsimoniously explained as the sole outcome of combined Inca and Spanish policies on the region's population demography: highland populations differed from coastal and lowland populations in mtDNA genetic structure only; highland groups also showed strong evidence of female-biased gene flow and/or effective sizes relative to other Peruvian ecozones. Taken together, these findings indicate that population genetic structure in the Peruvian Central Andes is considerably more complex than previously reported and that characterizations of and explanations for genetic variation may be best pursued within more localized regions and defined time periods.

The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is a highly social canid that engages in sophisticated, coordinated group hunting tactics to procure large game. It is one of the most effective hunters of the African savannah, due to its highly developed communication methods. It also has large, mobile ears which enhance its auditory capabilities while hunting and assist with thermoregulation. Recent research suggested that certain muscles of facial expression, particularly those involved with expressive eyebrow movement, evolved solely in domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) to facilitate communication with their human owners. However, it is unclear whether highly social wild canid species may also employ similar expressive eye communication. We performed detailed dissections of an adult male L. pictus to evaluate and describe its mimetic and auricular musculature. Overall, L. pictus has well-developed facial and ear muscles. Musculi levator anguli oculi medialis (LAOM) and retractor anguli oculi lateralis (RAOL), mimetic muscles of hypothesized importance in domestic dog-human non-verbal communication, are enlarged in L. pictus, comparable in size to those of domestic dogs, as is m. orbicularis oculi. This morphology suggests that ocular facial expressions contribute to within-pack communication in wild dogs and are not unique to domestic dogs. The auricular muscles of L. pictus are well-developed, supporting greater leverage and fine manipulation of its large, mobile ears. These muscular adaptations facilitate the highly social ecology of African wild dogs and challenge current interpretations about the unique nature of domestic dog facial expressions.

This study addresses how the human temporal bone develops the population-specific pattern of morphology observed among adults and at what point in ontogeny those patterns arise. Three-dimensional temporal bone shape was captured using 15 landmarks on ontogenetic series of specimens from seven modern human populations. Discriminant function analysis revealed that population-specific temporal bone morphology is evident early in ontogeny, with significant shape differences among many human populations apparent prior to the eruption of the first molar. As early as five years of age, temporal bone shape reflects population history and can be used to reliably sort populations, although those in closer geographic proximity and molecular affinity are more likely to be misclassified. The deviation of cold-adapted populations from this general pattern of congruence between temporal bone morphology and genetic distances, identified in previous work, was confirmed here in adult and subadult specimens, and was revealed to occur earlier in ontogeny than previously recognized. Significant differences exist between the ontogenetic trajectories of some pairs of populations, but not among others, and the angles of these trajectories do not reflect genetic relationships or final adult temporal bone size. Significant intrapopulation differences are evident early in ontogeny, with differences becoming amplified by divergent trajectories in some groups. These findings elucidate how the congruence between adult human temporal bone morphology and population history develops, and reveal that this pattern corresponds closely to that described previously for facial ontogeny.

Since its initial discovery in the 1500s, the cecal appendix has been an anatomical structure of great intrigue, notorious for its inconvenient tendency to become inflamed and often require surgical intervention. Appendicitis is one of the most common indications for emergency abdominal surgery, costing healthcare systems billions of dollars globally and causing tens of thousands of deaths annually. Yet, recent studies have indicated that the appendix may serve important protective functions in fortifying the body's immune response against invading pathogens and re-inoculating the gut with commensal bacteria after periods of gastrointestinal illness. While the cecal appendix was once believed to be a synapomorphy of hominoids (humans and other great apes), recent studies suggested that it is a recurrent trait found in several other species of primates, rodents, lagomorphs, marsupials, and monotremes. Mapping appendiceal and other gastrointestinal traits across a mammalian consensus phylogeny revealed that the cecal appendix has evolved independently numerous times throughout mammalian evolution, significantly more than would be expected due to chance alone, suggesting that the appendix is adaptively advantageous. However, attempts to identify an overarching ecological, behavioral, dietary, or environmental factor driving some species to evolve an appendix have been largely unsuccessful, indicating that the cecal appendix has a complex and diverse evolutionary history. This review discusses the current understanding of the pathophysiology, evolution, and possible functions of the appendix, both within humans and broadly across the class Mammalia.

Anatomical variation in the brachial plexus may result in a variety of clinically relevant patterns, including various neuralgias of the upper extremity and differing nerve territories. Some conditions can be debilitating in symptomatic patients, resulting in paresthesia, anesthesia, or weakness of the upper extremity. Others may simply result in cutaneous nerve territories that deviate from a traditional dermatome map. This study evaluated the frequency and anatomical presentations of a large number of clinically relevant brachial plexus nerve variations in a sample of human body donors. We identified a high frequency of various branching variants, of which clinicians, especially surgeons, should be aware. The medial pectoral nerves in 30% of the sample were found to originate from either the lateral cord, or both the medial and lateral cords of the brachial plexus rather than exclusively from the medial cord. The dual cord innervation pattern greatly increases the number of spinal cord levels traditionally believed to innervate the pectoralis minor muscle. The thoracodorsal nerve arose as a branch of the axillary nerve 17% of the time. The musculocutaneous nerve sent branches to the median nerve in 5% of specimens. The medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve shared a common trunk with the medial brachial cutaneous nerve in 5% of individuals and derived from the ulnar nerve in 3% of specimens.

A cranium belonging to a baenid turtle was recently recovered from the lower half of the Judith River Formation, Montana. Badlands Dinosaur Museum (BDM) 004 is a well-preserved partial cranium that includes the posterior cranial vault, cranial base, and otic capsules. Based on diagnostic characters, the skull can be attributed to Plesiobaena antiqua, which has been previously reported from the Judith River Formation. It also shares with palatobaenines projecting posterior processes of the tubercula basioccipitale and a prominent condylus occipitalis with a deep central pit, demonstrating variation within the Pl. antiqua hypodigm. In a phylogenetic analysis, an operational taxonomic unit of BDM 004 was positioned within Baenodda in an unresolved polytomy with Pl. antiqua, Edowa zuniensis, Palatobaeninae, and Eubaeninae. Microcomputed tomographic (µCT) scans revealed morphology of the middle and inner ear and endocast that are largely unknown in baenids. Semicircular canals of BDM 004 are virtually identical to those of Eubaena cephalica and consistent in dimensions to those of other turtle taxa, including anterior and posterior semicircular canals that are robust and taller than the common crus and diverge from each other at an angle of approximately 90°. The digital endocast reveals a moderately flexed brain with rounded cerebral hemispheres and minimal separation between the metencephalon and myelencephalon. Its well-preserved columella auris (stapes) is gracile with a posterodorsally flared basis columella. It arcs across the middle ear and flattens near its terminus. This study adds to the understanding of baenid middle and inner ear and neuroanatomical morphology and expands the morphological understanding of Pl. antiqua.

The brachial plexus, a network of ventral rami providing somatic sensory and motor innervation to the forelimb, is of particular importance in felids. Large-bodied pantherines require powerful rotatory and joint stabilizing forelimb muscles to maintain secure holds on large prey, while smaller-bodied felines are small prey specialists reliant on manual dexterity. Brachial plexus dissections of two snow leopards (Panthera uncia) and two domestic cats (Felis catus) revealed that generally the morphology of the brachial plexus is quite conserved. However, differences in the nerves supplying the shoulder and antebrachium may reflect differing prey capture strategies between the subfamilies. The brachial plexus of both species derives from ventral rami of C6-T1. In P. uncia, an extensive musculus (m.) subscapularis with multiple pennations is innervated by a larger number of nn. subscapulares, deriving from more spinal cord levels than in F. catus. C6 continues to become n. suprascapularis in both taxa; however, in F. catus, it also gives branches that join with C7, while in P. uncia, it is dedicated to musculi (mm.) supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and a small branch to cervical musculature. In F. catus, nervus (n.) medianus receives direct contributions from more ventral rami than P. uncia, possibly reflecting a greater reliance on manual dexterity in prey capture in the former. In addition to primary innervation by n. thoracodorsalis, m. latissimus dorsi is also innervated by n. thoracicus lateralis near the axilla in both taxa, suggesting that it may belong to a complex of proximal forelimb musculature along with mm. pectoralis profundus and cutaneus trunci.

Previous analyses of extant catarrhine craniodental morphology have often failed to recover their molecular relationships, casting doubt on the accuracy of hominin phylogenies based on anatomical data. However, on the basis of genetic, morphometric and environmental affinity patterns, a growing body of literature has demonstrated that particular aspects of cranial morphology are remarkably reliable proxies for neutral modern human population history. Hence, it is important to test whether these intra-specific patterns can be extrapolated to a broader primate taxon level such that inference rules for understanding the morphological evolution of the extinct hominins may be devised. Here, we use a matrix of molecular distances between 15 hominoid taxa to test the genetic congruence of 14 craniomandibular regions, defined and morphometrically delineated on the basis of previous modern human analyses. This methodology allowed us to test directly whether the cranial regions found to be reliable indicators of population history were also more reliable proxies for hominoid genetic relationships. Cranial regions were defined on the basis of three criteria: developmental-functional units, individual bones, and regions differentially affected by masticatory stress. The results found that all regions tested were significantly and strongly correlated with the molecular matrix. However, the modern human predictions regarding the relative congruence of particular regions did not hold true, as the face was statistically the most reliable indicator of hominoid genetic distances, as opposed to the vault or basicranium. Moreover, when modern humans were removed from the analysis, all cranial regions improved in their genetic congruence, suggesting that it is the inclusion of morphologically-derived humans that has the largest effect on incongruence between morphological and molecular estimates of hominoid relationships. Therefore, it may be necessary to focus on smaller intra-generic taxonomic levels to more fully understand the effects of neutral and selective evolutionary processes in generating morphological diversity patterns.

The anatomical sciences heavily rely on art and illustration to convey form, depth, and relationship within living structures. Today, biomedical illustrators carry forward traditions from 16th century artists through the likes of 20th century champions such as Frank Netter to help educators and researchers convey their messages to their listening, and more importantly, viewing audiences. Biomedical illustration programs are a valuable resource for academics to package their research as published figures, including graphical abstracts, in scientific journals. Here, we describe an innovative art-science collaboration among The Anatomical Record, the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Rush University, and the Master's Program in Biomedical Visualization at University of Illinois at Chicago, whose students were invited to create and submit scientific illustrations for consideration as cover art for the journal.

Occipital neuralgia (ON) is a condition defined as a headache characterized by paroxysmal burning and stabbing pain located in the distribution of the greater occipital nerve (GON), lesser occipital nerve (LON), or third occipital nerves (TON). This condition can be severely impairing in symptomatic patients and is known to have numerous etiologies deriving from various origins such as trauma, anatomical abnormalities, tumors, infections, and degenerative changes. This study reports four cases of a previously undescribed anatomical variant in which the (spinal) accessory nerve (SAN) fuses with the LON before piercing the sternocleidomastoid (SCM). The fusion of these two nerves and their route through the SCM points to a potential location for nerve compression within the SCM and, in turn, another potential source of ON. This anatomical presentation has clinical significance as it provides clinicians with another possible cause of ON to consider when diagnosing patients who present with complaints of a headache. Additionally, this study explores the prevalence of piercing anatomy of the LON and GAN and discusses their clinical implications.

We present new fossil records of the geoemydid turtle Bridgeremys pusilla from the Uinta Formation of Utah. Turtles are abundant throughout the unit, and known taxa are similar to those from the older strata in the Upper Green River Basin in Wyoming from the Bridger and Washakie Formations. B. pusilla is known from Bridgerian deposits but was not previously known from after the Turtle Bluff Member of the Bridger Formation. The taxon was coveal with two species of the geoemydid Echmatemys (E. callopyge and E. wyomingensis), a common genus of extinct pond turtles known primarily from lacustrine and fluvial deposits in western North America, including the Uinta Basin. In addition to previously documented morphological differences, our geometric morphometric analyses revealed significant differences in epiplastral morphology between B. pusilla and the two coeval Echmatemys species. Bridgeremys pusilla shared several morphological characters with Testudinidae. However, our anatomical network analysis suggests that the carapace of B. pusilla distributed stress forces in a manner more similar to emydids (basal and derived) than to derived testudinoids (Testudinidae and Emydidae), including Echmatemys species. This finding changes our understanding of the ecology of the species and sheds light onto how geoemydid turtles of the Uinta Formation may have partitioned the available ecospace. These new Uintan records extend the geographic range of B. pusilla into the Uinta Basin and stratigraphically through the top of the Uinta Formation, extending the temporal range of the taxon by more than 4 million years through the Uintan North American Land Mammal Age to the base of the Duchesne River Formation.

Four turtle taxa are previously documented from the Cenomanian Arlington Archosaur Site (AAS) of the Lewisville Formation (Woodbine Group) in Texas. Herein, we describe a new side-necked turtle (Pleurodira), Pleurochayah appalachius gen. et sp. nov., which is a basal member of the Bothremydidae. Pleurochayah appalachius gen. et sp. nov. shares synapomorphic characters with other bothremydids, including shared traits with Kurmademydini and Cearachelyini, but has a unique combination of skull and shell traits. The new taxon is significant because it is the oldest crown pleurodiran turtle from North America and Laurasia, predating bothremynines Algorachelus peregrinus and Paiutemys tibert from Europe and North America respectively. This discovery also documents the oldest evidence of dispersal of crown Pleurodira from Gondwana to Laurasia. Pleurochayah appalachius gen. et sp. nov. is compared to previously described fossil pleurodires, placed in a modified phylogenetic analysis of pelomedusoid turtles, and discussed in the context of pleurodiran distribution in the mid-Cretaceous. Its unique combination of characters demonstrates marine adaptation and dispersal capability among basal bothremydids.

The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is anatomically and physiologically adapted for life in the rocky terrain of alpine zones in Central and South Asia. Panthera uncia is scansorial, and typically hunts solitarily by using overhead ambush of prey, rather than the typical stalking pattern of other large pantherines. In this study, we conducted dissections, detailed documentation, and illustrated the forelimb anatomy of two adult P. uncia specimens (1M/1F). Qualitative and quantitative data revealed an intriguing combination of functional adaptations illustrating a balance between the diverse demands of head-first descent, pouncing, climbing across rocky terrain, restraint of large prey, rapid pursuit, and navigating deep snow. In many forelimb proportions, P. uncia is intermediate between the cursorial Acinonyx jubatus (cheetah) and the scansorial forest dwelling Panthera onca (jaguar). Enlarged scapular and pectoral musculature provide stability to the shoulder girdle during grappling with large prey, as well as support during jumping and climbing. A small, unarticulated bony clavicle may provide greater stability to the forelimb, while still allowing flexibility. In the brachium and antebrachium of P. uncia, there is a functional compromise between the powerful grip needed for grasping large prey and the stability necessary for rapid pursuit of prey over uneven, rocky terrain. A unique bifurcation in the tendon of m. biceps brachii may provide additional functional stability at the radiohumeral joint. Intrinsic muscles of the palmar manus are broad and fleshy, acting as an enlarged surface area to evenly distribute body weight while walking on soft snow. However, muscles that act to provide fine manual manipulation are reduced, as in other large prey specialists. Overall, P. uncia displays morphological adaptive parallels with scansorial, large prey specializing pantherines, such as P. onca, while also showing adaptations for running.

Circumscapular pain is a frequent complaint in clinical practice. The dorsal scapular and long thoracic nerves course through the neck, where they may become entrapped between or within adjacent scalene muscles. Additionally, a high frequency of brachial plexus "piercing" variants have recently been documented, and it is unclear how they influence branching patterns distally along the brachial plexus. In the project reported here we strived to identify and quantify variations in dorsal scapular nerve and long thoracic nerve secondary to brachial plexus piercing variation. Ninety brachial plexuses from human cadavers (45 female/45 male) were evaluated to identify nerve branching patterns, specifically piercing versus non-piercing variants in the brachial plexus roots and nerves. Anatomical entrapment of the dorsal scapular nerve and long thoracic nerve was found in high frequencies (60.8% and 44.6%, respectively). Anomalous brachial plexus piercing variants were associated with higher frequencies of distal nerve branches also coursing through the scalene musculature, and there was a statistically significant correlation between brachial plexus and long thoracic nerve piercings (p = 0.027). Anatomical entrapment of nerves within scalene musculature is common and may be causative factors for idiopathic circumscapular pain, dorsalgia, and dysfunction of scapulohumeral rhythm. This study revealed a link between anatomical arrangement of the brachial plexus and occurrence of long thoracic nerve entrapment, which may lead to a series of cascading neurologic effects in which affected individuals may suffer from increased incidence of thoracic outlet syndrome and long thoracic nerve entrapment resulting in additional symptoms of interscapular pain and compromised shoulder mobility.

RESUMO

The retroesophageal aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) is a variation of the aortic arch that occurs asymptomatically in most patients. However, when symptomatic, it is most commonly associated with dysphagia. ARSA has also been noted as a location of potentially severe aneurysms in some patients, as well as posing a risk during surgical interventions in the esophageal region. This case study analyzes two individuals with ARSA morphology in comparison to a normal sample in order to gain a better anatomical understanding of this anomaly, potentially leading to better risk assessment of ARSA patients going forward. The diameter of the ARSA vessel was found to be substantially larger than both the right subclavian artery and brachiocephalic trunk of the subjects with classic aortic arch anatomy. As many ARSA individuals are asymptomatic, we hypothesize that the relative size of the ARSA may dictate its contribution to the presence and/or severity of associated symptomatology.

Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) is a rarely diagnosed condition resulting from compression of the celiac trunk (CT) by the median arcuate ligament (MAL) of the diaphragm. Ischemia due to reduced blood flow through the CT and/or neuropathic pain resulting from celiac ganglion compression may result in a range of gastrointestinal symptoms, including nausea, postprandial discomfort, and weight loss. However, the mechanism of compression and its anatomical correlates have been incompletely delineated. It has been hypothesized that CT angle of origination may be more acute in individuals with MALS. Here, frequency of anatomical variation in the MAL and CT were assessed in 35 cadaveric subjects (17M/18F), including the vertebral level of origin of CT and superior mesenteric artery (SMA), the distance between CT and MAL and SMA, the angles of origination of CT and SMA, the diameter at the CT base, and MAL/CT overlap. Females exhibited significantly higher rates of inferred MAL/CT overlap than males. Significant correlations were revealed between MAL/CT overlap and angles of origination of the CT and SMA. Vertebral level of origin of the CT in individuals with MAL/CT overlap was not significantly more superior than in those without. This study also revealed a significant relationship between MAL/CT overlap and angle of origination of the CT, which has clinical implications for understanding the anatomy associated with MALS.
