There is an urgent need for new bioactive molecules with unique mechanisms of action and chemistry to address the issue of incorrect use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which hurts both the environment and the health of humans. In light of this, research was done for this work to isolate, identify, and evaluate the germination-promoting potential of various plant species' fungal endophytes. Zea mays L. (maize) seed germination was examined using spore suspension of 75 different endophytic strains that were identified. Three promising strains were identified through screening to possess the ability mentioned above. These strains Alternaria alternate, Aspergilus flavus, and Aspergillus terreus were isolated from the stem of Tecoma stans, Delonix regia, and Ricinus communis, respectively. The ability of the three endophytic fungal strains to produce siderophore and indole acetic acid (IAA) was also examined. Compared to both Aspergillus flavus as well as Aspergillus terreus, Alternaria alternata recorded the greatest rates of IAA, according to the data that was gathered. On CAS agar versus blue media, all three strains failed to produce siderophores. Moreover, the antioxidant and antifungal potentials of extracts from these fungi were tested against different plant pathogens. The obtained results indicated the antioxidant and antifungal activities of the three fungal strains. GC-Mass studies were carried out to determine the principal components in extracts of all three strains of fungi. The three strains' fungus extracts included both well-known and previously unidentified bioactive compounds. These results may aid in the development of novel plant growth promoters by suggesting three different fungal strains as sources of compounds that may improve seed germination. According to the study that has been given, as unexplored sources of bioactive compounds, fungal endophytes have great potential.

Schistosomiasis afflicts approximately 120 million individuals globally. The hepatic pathology that occurs due to egg-induced granuloma and fibrosis is commonly attributed to this condition. However, there is currently no efficacious treatment available for either of these conditions.Our study aimed to investigate the potential antifibrotic and antiparasitic properties of different doses of gallic acid (GA) in experimental schistosomiasis mansoni. In addition, we investigated the outcomes of co-administering it with the standard anti-schistosomiasis treatment, praziquantel (PZQ).In experiment I, Schistosoma mansoni-infected mice were administered GA at doses of 10, 20, or 40 mg/kg. Their effectiveness was evaluated through parasitological (worm and egg loads, granuloma number and diameter), pathological (fibrosis percentage and H-score of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs)), and functional (liver enzymes) tests. In experiment II, we investigated the optimal dosage that yielded the best outcomes. This dosage was administered in conjunction with PZQ and was evaluated regarding the parasitological, pathological, functional, and immunological (fibrosis-regulating cytokines) activities.Our findings indicate that the administration of 40 mg/kg GA exhibited the highest level of effectiveness in experiment I. In experiment II, it exhibited lower antiparasitic efficacy in comparison to PZQ. However, it surpassed PZQ in other tests. It showed enhanced outcomes when combined with PZQ.In conclusion, our findings reveal that GA only slightly increased the antischistosomal activity of PZQ. However, it was linked to decreased fibrosis, particularly when administrated with PZQ. Our pilot study identifies GA as a natural antifibrotic agent, which could be administered with PZQ to mitigate the development of fibrosis.

INTRODUCTION: The adenoids and palatine tonsils, part of the lymphoid tissue, act as a first line of defense protecting the lower airways and gastrointestinal tract. Adenotonsillar hypertrophy in children may lead to airway obstruction. This study aims to demonstrate the association between adenotonsillar hypertrophy and decreased blood oxygen saturation. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among children aged 7-12 years with adenotonsillar hypertrophy and obstructive symptoms, admitted to King Fahad Hospital and Prince Mishari Hospital, Saudi Arabia, for tonsillectomy between July 2023 and January 2024. Exclusion criteria included respiratory diseases, cardiac disease, nasal polyps, nasal septum deviation, chest wall abnormality, and lower airway diseases. The control group included 56 healthy children. An otolaryngologist determined the severity of airway obstruction using the tonsil size. Oxygen saturation was measured using pulse oximetry. The determinants of oxygen saturation were assessed using multiple linear regression, with significance set at p<0.05. RESULTS: The study included 357 participants, with an even age distribution between 7-9 years (49.6%) and 10-12 years (50.4%), and 52% males. Diagnoses included adenoid hypertrophy (30%), tonsil hypertrophy (35%), both conditions (19%), and the control group (16%). Tonsil sizes ranged from Grade 1 (48%) to Grade 4 (8.4%), with 17% normal. The median oxygen saturation was 96.0% for the adenotonsillar hypertrophy group and 99.0% for the control. Oxygen saturation levels differed significantly across groups (p<0.0001), with lower median saturation in hypertrophy groups than controls. Males had a lower oxygen than females (estimate: -0.338, 95% CI [--0.640, -0.036], p=0.028). Adenoid hypertrophy (estimate: -3.863, 95% CI [-5.241, -2.484], p<0.001), tonsil hypertrophy (estimate: -3.631, 95% CI [-5.053, -2.208], p<0.001) and having both conditions (estimate: -3.777, 95% CI [-5.3.7, -2.247], p<0.001) was associated with lower oxygen saturation. Grade 1 tonsil size was associated with an increase in oxygen saturation (estimate = 2.905, 95% CI [1.616, 4.194], p<0.001). In contrast, Grade 4 tonsil size was linked to lower oxygen saturation (estimate=-4.848, 95% CI [-6.367, -3.329], p<0.001). Grades 2 and 3 were not significantly associated with changes in oxygen saturation. CONCLUSION: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is significantly associated with decreased blood oxygen saturation and related cardiopulmonary complications in children. Early adenotonsillectomy may be of benefit in preventing these complications and improving oxygen saturation levels.

OBJECTIVES: To assess tooth discoloration induced by different hydraulic calcium silicate-based cements (HCSCs), including effects of blood and placement method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty bovine teeth cut to a length of 18 mm (crown 8 mm, root 10 mm) were randomly assigned to 10 groups (n = 8), receiving orthograde apical plug treatment (APT). Apical plugs were 4 mm in length and made of ProRoot MTA (Dentsply), Medcem MTA (Medcem), TotalFill BC RRM Fast Set Putty (Brasseler), or Medcem Medical Portland Cement (Medcem) plus bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) with and without bovine blood. Further, orthograde (with or without preoperative adhesive coronal dentin sealing) and retrograde APT were compared. Teeth were obturated with gutta-percha and sealer, sealed with composite and stored in distilled water. Tooth color was measured on apical plug, gutta-percha/sealer, and crown surface before treatment versus 24 h, 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after treatment by spectrophotometry. Color difference (ΔE) values were calculated and analyzed by Shapiro-Wilk test, ANOVA with post hoc tests, Friedman test, t test, and post hoc tests with Bonferroni correction (α = .05). RESULTS: Tooth discoloration occurred in all groups with no significant differences between HCSCs (p > .05). After 24 months, color changes were prominent on roots but insignificant on crowns. Blood contamination induced a significantly decreased luminescence (p < .05). Blood had a stronger impact on tooth color than Bi2O3. No relevant effects of retrograde placement (p > .05) or preoperative dentin sealing (p > .05) were detected. CONCLUSIONS: Apical plugs of the tested HCSCs cause discoloration of bovine roots, but not discoloration of bovine tooth crowns within a 24-month period. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: APT should be performed carefully while avoiding direct contact with the coronal dentin, and in that case no aesthetic impairments occur.

In this study, novel cellulolytic fungal strains were isolated, purified, and identified. The ability of these isolates to biodegrade cellulosic materials was examined. The potential of the isolates to produce cellulolytic enzymes and optimize the cellulose degradation process was also investigated. The nylon net bag technique was used to separate cellulose-degrading fungi from soil. A total of 37 species were isolated and tested for their capacity to break down rice straw as a cellulose source. Qualitative assays for cellulase were carried out by Congo red plate assay, while quantitative assays were carried out using the dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method at 546 nm. Following morphological and molecular identification, the isolates that exhibited the highest cellulase activities were identified as Neurospora intermedia (Assiut University Mycological Center (AUMC) 14359), Fusarium verticillioides (AUMC 14360), and Rhizopus oryzae (AUMC 14361). For N. intermedia, the optimal conditions for maximum activity were a 2% carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) concentration, beef extract and peptone as nitrogen sources, pH 7, 30 °C, and an inoculum size of 2.5 (v/v). For F. verticillioides, the optimal conditions were 2.5% CMC concentration, yeast extract as a nitrogen source, pH 6, 30 °C, and an inoculum size of 2 (v/v). For R. oryzae, the optimal conditions were 2% CMC concentration, beef extract as a nitrogen source, pH 7, 30 °C and an inoculum size of 2.5 (v/v). The identified strains represent new starter strains with high efficiency under optimum conditions for prospective large-scale application in cellulose degradation and nanocellulose production-dependent water purification.

Naproxen (nap) is belonging to Non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) group of drugs that characterized by their free carboxylic group. The therapeutic activity of nap is usually accompanied by GI untoward side effects. Recently synthesized naproxen amides of some amino acid esters prodrugs to mask the free carboxylic group were reported. Those prodrugs showed a promising colorectal cancer chemopreventive activity. The current study aims to investigate the fate and hydrolysis of the prodrugs kinetically in different pH conditions, simulated gastric and intestinal fluids with pHs of 1.2, 5.5 and 7.4 in vitro at 37 °C. The effect of enzymes on the hydrolysis of prodrugs was also studied through incubation of these prodrugs at 37 °C in human plasma and rat liver homogenates. The pharmacokinetic parameters of selected prodrugs and the liberated nap were studied after oral and intraperitoneal administration in male wistar rats. The results showed the hydrolysis of naproxen amides of amino acid esters to nap through two steps first by degradation of the ester moiety to form the amide of nap with amino acid and the second was through the degradation of the amide link to liberate nap. The two reactions were followed and studied kinetically where K1 and K2 (rate constants of degradation) is reported. The hydrolysis of prodrugs was faster in liver homogenates than in plasma. The relative bioavailability of the liberated nap in vivo was higher in case of prodrug containing ethyl glycinate moiety than that occupied l-valine ethyl ester moiety. Each of nap. prodrugs containing ethyl glycinate and l-valine ethyl ester moieties appears promising in liberating nap, decreasing direct GI side effect and consequently their colorectal cancer chemopreventive activity.

The present study was carried out during two successive seasons (2013-2014) at the Research and Agriculture Experiment Station, Dirab, College of Food and Agricultural Sciences, King Saud University, Riyadh. Pollen grains, used in this trial, were collected from eleven male, namely Succary, Menify, Sallag, Dikhiny, Nabout Zamel, Serry, Khalas, Shagra, Safry, Maktumi and Kadary in order to pollinate female Kadary date palm cultivar. Results indicated that pollens of Safry male followed by Succary, Menify and Serry males increased the physical and biochemical characteristics of fruits during both seasons. Also, all the studied characters were significantly affected with different pollen males used in this trial. Pollens of Safry male gave highest fruit retention and bunch weight and best fruit quality like fruit and flesh weight, fruit size and fruit length and fruit biochemical properties as compared with other male. In vitro pollen germination of eleven males was studied using various concentration of sucrose (4, 6, 8 and 10%). The results showed that best germination was achieved with 8% sucrose concentration; however, 10% sucrose resulted in reduced percentage of pollen germination. In addition, pollen tube growth of five males (Succary, Sallag, Nabout-Zamel, Khalas and Safry) at 8% sucrose was alsostudied at 2, 4, 6 and 24 hr time interval. Elongation rate of pollen tube increased significantly after 24 hrs and it was found that pollens of Safry male gave highest pollen tube growth after 24 hrs than pollens of other male.

The oil content of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids with some physico-chemical properties and nutrients were investigated in oil produced from seeds of six important date palm cultivars and one seed strain present in Saudi Arabia. The results indicated that the oil extracted from six seed cultivars of date palm ranged from 6.73-10.89% w/w oil. The refractive index of date seeds oil was found to be between 1.4574 to 1.4615. The iodine values, acid values and saponification values were in the range of 74.2-86.6 g iodine 100 g(-1); 2.50-2.58 mg KOH g(-1) and 0.206-0.217 mg KOH g(-1), respectively. Lauric acid, Myristic acid, Palmitic acid C15, Palmitic acid C16 Stearic acid, Arachidic acid and Behenic acid of date seeds oil contents were found between 8.67-49.27; 7.01-15.43; 0-0.57; 4.82-18.09; 1.02-7.86; 0-0.08; and 0-0.15% w/w, in that order. Omega-6 and Omega-9 of date seeds oil were found between 7.31-17.87 and 52.12-58.78%, respectively. Khalas, Barhy cvs. and seed strain gave highest K and Ca, Na and Fe, Mg as compared with other studied cultivars.

The yellow hornpoppy, Glaucium flavum Cr. (Fam. Papaveraceae) is a perennial herb, distributed in the Mediterranean region, including Egypt. The plant contains many benzyl isoquinoline alkaloids from the aporphine type such as glaucine, isoboldine, 1-chelidonine, 1-norchelidonine and 3-O-methylarterenol, making it to display various medicinal activities including antitussive, anticancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, hypoglycemic, analgesic, antipyretic, bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory effects. The plant is now rare and endangered in the Egyptian flora due to urban sprawl. The present study looks into Glaucium flavum seeds' in vitro germination as well as the ability of the explants taken from the growing seedlings to form stable callus lines in order to enable micropropagation as a way to save the rare plant. The study also scans the production of different medicinally valuable alkaloids, particularly glaucine, in produced callus.

OBJECTIVES: Modern adhesives and composites allow the restoration of deep defects. In such cases, the matrix technique is particularly challenging, and excess composite is a common problem. Removing such overhangs with a scalpel has already been described as a substance preserving or selective finishing technique. Clinically, restoration margins may appear as a white line after scalpel finishing, and it is unclear whether this line represents a marginal gap and/or whether scalpel finishing promotes marginal gap formation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of scalpel finishing of deep Class II composite restorations on marginal gap formation. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Standardized mesioocclusal-distal (MOD) cavities were prepared and restored in 60 human molars randomly divided into six finishing protocol groups: G1, scalpels (SC); G2, oscillating files (OF); G3, finishing strips (FS); G4, scalpels and finishing strips (SC+FS); G5, scalpels and polishing discs (SC+PD); G6, polishing discs alone (PD, controls). The groups were additionally assigned to finishing and polishing in a phantom head (groups 1-4) or hand-held setting (groups 5-6) to simulate clinical and in-vitro research conditions, respectively. After restoration, artificial aging was performed by thermocycling (5-55°C, 2500 cycles) and mechanical loading (50 newtons (N) with 500,000 cycles) prior to scanning electron microscopy analysis of proximal restoration margin quality on the mesial and distal surfaces (n=120) of each tooth. Outcomes (perfect margin, marginal gap, overhang, marginal fracture) were statistically analyzed by t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, single-factor analysis of variance, post-hoc t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn-Bonferroni correction for multiple group comparisons. Cohen's effect size d(Cohen) was calculated to show the strength of the relationship between variables. RESULTS: Overall, marginal quality was significantly better in the hand-held setting (SC+PD and PD) than the phantom head setting (SC, OF, FS, SC+FS). The best marginal quality was achieved with oscillating files in the phantom head setting and with scalpels plus polishing discs in the hand-held setting. Marginal gaps occurred significantly more often with scalpels, but the proportion of gaps was very low and clinically insignificant. Finishing strips were the least effective instruments for removing overhangs but performed better in combination with scalpels. CONCLUSIONS: Scalpel finishing can effectively and gently remove overhangs from enamel. However, blades should be used with caution as they can cut the dentin and cementum. Scalpel finishing does not lead to a clinically relevant increase in marginal gaps, but should be followed by polishing, whenever possible, to eliminate any marginal fractures that might be present.

Background and Aim: Given the rise in stray and imported dogs in Egypt over the past 5 years, it is surprising that no report of Brucella canis infection in dogs or humans has been documented in Egypt's published papers. This study aimed to detect the presence of antibodies against the rough (B. canis) and smooth Brucellae among dogs in Egypt and to characterize the Brucella species circulating in dogs. Materials and Methods: Blood samples (n = 449) were collected from owned and stray dogs in the Greater Cairo region (n = 309) and Damietta governorate (n = 140). The apparent, true, and total seroprevalence of canine brucellosis caused by B. canis infection were calculated using the 2-mercaptoethanol tube agglutination test (2-ME TAT) and rapid slide agglutination test (RSAT). We used the rose Bengal test (RBT) and the buffered acidified plate antigen test (BAPAT) to check the serum samples from dogs for the presence of antibodies against smooth Brucellae. Three polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays - Bruce-ladder PCR, B. canis species-specific PCR (BcSS-PCR), and Abortus Melitensis Ovis Suis (AMOS)-PCR - were used to determine the Brucella species in the buffy coats of the serologically positive dogs. Results: The overall apparent and true prevalence of B. canis infection in dogs were estimated to be 3.8% and 13.2%. The estimated true prevalence in stray dogs (15%) was higher than in owned dogs (12.5%). The BAPAT and the RBT using smooth antigens revealed that 11 (2.4%) and 9 (2%) were positive. Bruce-ladder PCR targeting eryC, ABC, and Polysaccharide deacetylase genes was able to identify B. canis in nine out of 17 buffy coat samples. AMOS-PCR identified the eight undetermined Brucella species by Bruce-ladder PCR as Brucella abortus (n = 4) and Brucella melitensis (n = 4). To exclude the presence of Brucella suis, a one-step species-specific BcSS-PCR was performed and specifically amplified all B. canis DNA (n = 9) the same as did the Bruce-ladder PCR. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of B. canis detection in dogs in Egypt. Molecular identification of B. abortus and B. melitensis in the Egyptian canines highlights the role of stray dogs in brucellosis remerging in Brucellosis-free dairy farms. Brucella canis infection can be diagnosed specifically with the one-step BcSS-PCR. The obtained results set-an-alarm to the veterinary authorities to launch plans to control this disease in dogs.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been generally used due to their strong antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal and antimicrobial properties. However, their toxicity is a subject of sustained debate, thus requiring further studies. Hence, this study examines the adverse effects of the sub-dermal administered dose of AgNPs (200 nm) on the liver, kidney and heart of male Wistar rats. Thirty male rats were randomly distributed into six groups of five animals per group. Group A and D served as the control and received distilled water for 14 and 28 days respectively. Groups B and C were sub-dermally exposed to AgNPs at 10 and 50 mg/kg daily for 14 days while E and F were sub-dermally exposed to AgNPs at 10 and 50 mg/kg daily for 28 days. The liver, kidney and heart of the animals were collected, processed and used for biochemical and histological analysis. Our results revealed that the subdermal administration of AgNPs induced significant increased (p < 0.05) activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), urea, creatinine, and malondialdehyde (MDA) while decreasing the levels of glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and total thiol groups in the rat tissues. Our findings suggest that the subdermal administration of AgNPs induced oxidative stress and impaired the hepatic, renal and cardiac functions of male Wistar rats.

<b>Background and Objective:</b> Ras cheese is one of the important dairy products that are consumed in great quantities. But this cheese is vulnerable to the growth of fungi during ripening and selling until consumption. Therefore, research aimed to detect fungi contaminating Ras cheese and try to resist them. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> The effect of various concentrations (0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3%) of essential oils emulsions of clove (<i>Syzygium aromaticum</i>), thyme (<i>Thymus vulgaris</i>) and peppermint (<i>Mentha piperita</i>) severally on the mycelial growth of the isolated fungi as compared to the control sample was tested <i>in vitro.</i> <b>Results:</b> The results indicated that many fungal species belonging to the genera <i>Aspergillus</i>, <i>Mucor</i>, <i>Eurotium</i> and <i>Mortierella</i> were isolated from the infected Ras cheese. Ochratoxin A was found in two samples whereas recorded the highest level in sample number 1 (2.1 µg kg<sup>1</sup>). Aflatoxin M1 was found in few levels ranged between 0.012 and 0.360 µg kg<sup>1</sup>in cheese samples, while aflatoxin B1 and B2 weren't detected in all samples. Clove essential oil emulsion completely inhibited the growth of all tested fungi at the concentration of 0.5%, followed by thyme essential oil emulsion which inhibited the fungal growth of all fungi at the concentration of 1%, while peppermint essential oil emulsion was less effective. <b>Conclusion:</b> The research recommends that clove and thyme essential oils emulsions can be used to resist the fungi of Ras cheese. Also, suggests that more research could be done on these essential oils emulsions to produce safe foods free of fungi.

The aim of this study was to introduce a new computer-guided technique for contouring and shaving of craniofacial fibrous dysplasia involving the zygoma. Computer-guided contouring was performed for five patients with unilateral craniofacial fibrous dysplasia involving the zygoma, using a patient-specific surgical depth guide. This patient-specific guide with depth holes was virtually designed for each patient based on mirroring of the unaffected side. The guide was printed using rapid prototyping. In the surgical theatre, the guide was seated in place and implant drills were inserted through the guide holes, creating depth holes according to the preoperative planning. Bone removal was then continued using surgical burs and/or bone chisels, connecting the guiding depth holes. Satisfaction with facial aesthetics was evaluated by the patients using a Likert scale, and by the surgeons using the Whitaker rating scale. All patients were satisfied with the postoperative facial aesthetics. Four patients were rated category I on the Whitaker rating scale, and one patient as category II. In conclusion, this patient-specific surgical depth guide appears to offer a solution for the unpredictability of conventional bone removal in unilateral craniofacial fibrous dysplasia, especially in three-dimensional multiplanar areas such as the zygoma. Further investigations are required.

The course of Trichinella (T.) spiralis infection includes intestinal and muscle phases. The aims of this work were to evaluate IL-23 and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) by immunohistochemistry in the muscles of T. spiralis infected mice in a time-course study and to correlate their level with the serum levels of IL-23, IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-10 cytokines. The mice were divided into an un-infected control group (UC) (10 mice) and 5 infected mouse groups (each 10 mice/group. Each mouse was infected with 200 T. spiralis larvae) and sacrificed on days 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 post-infection (dpi). IL-23 showed weak expression (+1) on the 21st dpi, then it became moderately expressed (+2) on the 28th dpi and on day 35 pi, the immunoreactivity was strong (+3). COX-2 expressed weakly on 14 dpi, while the other mouse groups (21, 28 and 35) showed strong (+3) expression. IL-23 serum concentrations increased gradually in a significant pattern, in comparison to that of UC mice, from the 21st dpi to the end of the experiment. IFN-γ increased gradually and was significantly higher than those of UC mice from the 7th dpi, reached its maximum level on the 21st dpi, after which it decreased non-significantly. IL-4 up-regulated significantly in all infected groups in comparison to UC mice achieving its highest level on the 21st dpi and decreased after that. IL-10 increased significantly on the 7th dpi, but dropped at the 14th dpi, then reached its peak on the 21st dpi, and decreased again on the 28th and 35th dpi. In conclusion, T. spiralis infection caused increased expression of IL-23 and COX-2 in the muscle of infected mice, the effect being strongest on the 35th day. Also, the infection induced a mixed Th1/Th2 profile with a predominance of Th2 at the early muscle phase, after which the immune repose became mainly Th2.

Egyptian traditional cheese has a long history and still represent an important part of the Egyptian diet. A lot of scientific studies in probiotic topic is usually related to bacteria, in particular lactic acid bacteria, and there is lack of information about potentially probiotic yeasts, except Saccharomyces boulardii. In the current study, 50 samples of traditional Egyptian buffalo sweetened cheese randomly were collected from five local Egyptian markets for yeast isolation. Isolated yeast species were identified using API20 kits techniques and the most frequently isolates were genotypically confirmed identified using the variability in the ITS rDNA. Appropriate in vitro assays have been conducted to examine their probiotic potentiality counting acid and bile salts tolerance, stimulated gastrointestinal tract tolerance, cell adhesion/hydrophobic characteristics, killer toxin productivity and antimicrobial activity against some clinical and food borne pathogens. The incidence of the obtained yeast taxa was found to be; S. cerevisiae (25%), Wickerhamomyces anomalus (23%), Pichia kudriavzevii (19%), Kluyveromyces lactis (17%), Geotrichum candidum (6%), Debaryomyces hansenii (4%), Candida tropicalis (3%), Cryptococcus neoformans (1%), Rhodotorula glabrata (1%) and Trichosporon cutaneum (1%). The most frequently isolates (S. cerevisiae, W. anomalus and P. kudriavzevii) exhibited high tolerance to bile salts elevated concentrations up to 2.0 %. W. anomalus could withstand the elevated bile salts concentrations and it was the most tolerable yeast isolate to intestinal juice environment. W. anomalus showed the lowest eradication from intestinal mucosa as indicated by the hydrophobicity average percentage 11.891% to xylene comparing to the P. kudriavzevii which showed the highest hydrophobicity average percentage of 46.185% to chloroform. Yeast isolates S. cerevisiae, W. anomalus and P. kudriavzevii (particularly W. anomalus) were recognized as ideal potentially probiotic model having in vitro properties that make them favorable candidates for probiotic applications.

Seed germination of Citrullus colocynthis, as in many other species of Cucurbitaceae, is inhibited by light, particularly at low temperatures. Germination response to light and temperature has been attributed to day length and temperature during seed maturation. This study assessed the effects of these factors on the germination response of C. colocynthis to temperature and light quality. Ripe fruits were collected from natural habitats during December and February and germinated at three temperatures (15/25, 20/30 and 25/35 °C) in five light treatments (dark, white light and Red:Far Red (R:FR) ratios of 0.30, 0.87 and 1.19). Additionally, unripe fruits were also collected from natural habitats and completed their maturation in growth chambers under different day lengths (6, 16 and 24 h of darkness) at 10/20 °C, and in darkness at both 10/20 °C and 25/35 °C. Mature seeds of the different treatments were germinated in the same five light treatments at 15/25 °C. Germination was significantly higher in the dark than that in any light treatment. Seeds matured at higher temperatures (i.e. seeds from the December collection and those matured at 25/35 °C) had significantly higher germination than those matured at lower temperatures (i.e. seeds from the February collection and those matured at 10/20 °C). Dark germination was significantly higher for the December collection than for the February collection. Seeds of the two collections germinated in the dark only at 15/25 °C. However, seeds matured in a growth chamber at 10/20 °C in darkness germinated at 15/25 °C in all light treatments, except for the R:FR ratio 0.30. Seeds of the different treatments failed to germinate in FR-rich light. This study demonstrates that both temperature and day length during seed maturation play significant roles in the germination response of C. colocynthis. Additionally, the dark requirement for germination is likely beneficial for species with the larger seeds, such as C. colocynthis, which produce bigger seedlings that are able to emerge from deep soils and are competitively superior under dense vegetation and resource-limited conditions.

The molecular structure of the 2-(4-oxo-3-phenylthiazolidin-2-ylidene) malononitrile (3) is calculated using DFT B3LYP/6-311G(d, p) method. The calculated geometric parameters are in good agreement with the experimental data. The NBO calculations were performed to predict the natural atomic charges at the different atomic sites and study the different intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) interactions occurring in the studied system. The BD(2)C17-C19 → BD*(2)C14-C15, LP(2)O2 → BD*(1)N5-C9 and LP(1)N5 → BD*(2)C10-C11 ICT interactions causing stabilization of the system by 23.30, 30.63 and 52.48 kcal/mol, respectively. The two intense electronic transition bands observed experimentally at 249 nm and 296 nm are predicted using the TD-DFT calculations at 237.9 nm (f = 0.1618) and 276.4 nm (f = 0.3408), respectively. These electronic transitions are due to H-3 → L (94%) and H → L (95%) excitations, respectively.

The dissipation of (O-methyl-14C) monocrotophos and U-ring labelled 14C-carbaryl was monitored for over two years in absence and presence of other insecticides using in situ soil columns. The dissipation of 14C-monocrotophos from soil treated with methomyl and carbaryl showed a faster rate of downward movement than in a control column tagged with the labelled insecticide alone. The same trend was observed in experiments with 14C-carbaryl that dissipated more readily in soil treated with non-labelled monocrotophos and methomyl. In the presence of other insecticides the percentage of bound residues was generally lower than in control experiments. The bound residues at the top of the column are released at a low rate under conditions prevailing in the field. The overall time required for dissipation of 50% of monocrotophos and carbaryl (t50) as estimated from control experiment was approximately 20 and 24 weeks, respectively. The data indicate that repeated applications of pesticides might enhance the release of 14C-bound residues.
