RESUMO

REASON FOR PERFORMING STUDY: During trot, the rider can either rise from the saddle during every stride or remain seated. Rising trot is used frequently because it is widely assumed that it decreases the loading of the equine back. This has, however, not been demonstrated in an objective study. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of rising and sitting trot on the movements of the horse. HYPOTHESIS: Sitting trot has more extending effect on the horse's back than rising trot and also results in a higher head and neck position. METHODS: Twelve horses and one rider were used. Kinematic data were captured at trot during over ground locomotion under 3 conditions: unloaded, rising trot and sitting trot. Back movements were calculated using a previously described method with a correction for trunk position. Head-neck position was xpressed as extension and flexion of C1, C3 and C6, and vertical displacement of C1 and the bit. RESULTS: Sitting trot had an overall extending effect on the back of horses when compared to the unloaded situation. In rising trot: the maximal flexion of the back was similar to the unloaded situation, while the maximal extension was similar to sitting trot; lateral bending of the back was larger than during the unloaded situation and sitting trot; and the horses held their heads lower than in the other conditions. The angle of C6 was more flexed in rising than in sitting trot. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The back movement during rising trot showed characteristics of both sitting trot and the unloaded condition. As the same maximal extension of the back is reached during rising and sitting trot, there is no reason to believe that rising trot was less challenging for the back.

RESUMO

One of the primary objectives of the Oncology Pathology Working Group (OPWG), a joint initiative of the Veterinary Cancer Society and the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, is for oncologists and pathologists to collaboratively generate consensus documents to standardize aspects of and provide guidelines for oncologic pathology. Consensus is established through review of relevant peer-reviewed literature relative to a subgroup's particular focus. In this document, the authors provide descriptions of the literature reviewed, the review process, and a summary of the information gathered on immunocytochemistry. The intent of this publication is to help educate practitioners and pathologists on the process of immunocytochemistry and to provide a guide for the use of this technique in veterinary medicine. This document represents the opinions of the working group and the authors and does not constitute a formal endorsement by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or the Veterinary Cancer Society.

RESUMO

A 16S rRNA gene of the obligate intracellular bacterial parasite Sarcobium lyticum was amplified using the polymerase chain reaction in combination with site-specific primers. The amplified DNA was cloned, sequenced and compared with other bacterial 16S rRNA sequences. The analysis revealed that S. lyticum belongs to the gamma subclass of the Proteobacteria and shows the closest relationship to an intracellular Legionella species recovered by amoebal enrichment from the sputum of a patient with pneumonia. S. lyticum could be detected in situ with a fluorescent oligonucleotide probe by whole cell hybridization.

RESUMO

An almost full length 16S rRNA gene of the obligate bacterial endosymbiont Polynucleobacter necessarius was amplified using the polymerase chain reaction in combination with site-specific primers. The amplified DNA was directly sequenced and compared with other bacterial 16S rRNA sequences. P. necessarius belongs to the beta-subclass of Proteobacteria and shows the closest relationship to Alcaligenes eutrophus, Burkholderia solanacearum, and B. pickettii. In Proteobacteria and shows the closest relationship to Alcaligenes eutrophus, Burkholderia solanacearum, and B. pickettii. In situ hybridization with a specific oligonucleotide probe corroborated the assignment of the retrieved sequence to P. necessarius.

RESUMO

Ascorbic acid status of thirty-nine white children with developmental disabilities, ages three to nineteen years, is reported. Mean daily ascorbic acid intakes were calculated from three-day food records. Biochemical assessment consisted of fasting serum levels and a 6-hr. load test. Nine children served as a control group for the load test only. Mean dietary intakes for the vitamin were 204 per cent of the allowance. The mean serum ascorbic acid value was 1.3 mg. per deciliter. Only two children had levels at the unacceptable deficient level. Following load tests, ten children were identified as low excretors (less than 17 per cent), nine were moderate excretors (17 to 23 per cent), and the rest were high excretors (above 23 per cent). All of the normal children were high excretors. Two of three children with low ascorbic acid intakes (below 66 per cent of the recommended allowance) were verified as deficient by their fasting serum levels and urinary recovery after a load.

RESUMO

The Detroit Maternity and Infant Care Project (DMICP) is funded under Title V of the Social Security Act. Records of 198 pregnant women and their infants seen by a project nutritionist in fiscal 1971-72 were studied. The women were predominantly young (below twenty years of age), black, and not enrolled in school. Most were pregnant for the first time. About a third were overweight. Mean scores on the APGAR scale for the infants at birth were high (7 to 10). More than half of these young mothers brought their infants to the project center for check-ups six to ten times during the first year.

RESUMO

Low intakes by 198 pregnant women of milk, fruit, and vegetables are reported: consumption of meat and bread and cereals was satisfactory. However, mean hemoglobin and hematocrit values were within acceptable ranges for these women, indicating that supplementation apparently compensated in part for poor dietary habits. Protein intake of the infants of these mothers was above recommendations, the advisability of which is questioned. Height and weight of the male and female infants at birth were above and below the 10th percentile, respectively. By the age of four months, however, all infants were equal to or above this level. Mean hemoglobin levels were above acceptable levels.

RESUMO

Nutritional and medical records of the infants of 198 women of a low socioeconomic group were correlated with results of the Denver Developmental Screening Test. At one year, the infants' developmental age was above the norm. In addition, selected medical, nutritional, and developmental variables, as indicated by charts of the Detroit Maternity and Infant Care Project, were statistically analyzed for interrelationships. No correlation was found between hemoglobin levels, even though they were low for some infants, and developmental indexes. Prenatal weight gain of the mothers was statistically significant in relation to their infants' birth weight, height, and head circumference. Thus periodic monitoring of weight throughout pregnancy is recommended.

RESUMO

Malonomonas rubra is a microaerotolerant fermenting bacterium which can maintain its energy metabolism for growth by decarboxylation of malonate to acetate. 16S rRNA sequence analysis revealed that M. rubra is closely related to the cluster of mesophilic sulfur-reducing bacteria within the delta subclass of the Proteobacteria, with the fermenting bacterium Pelobacter acidigallici and the sulfur reducers Desulfuromusa kysingii, D. bakii and D. succinoxidans as closest relatives. The cells contain high amounts (up to 12% of the total cell protein content) of a c-type cytochrome which is present mainly (> 60%) in the cytoplasm and to minor parts in the periplasm (> 20%) and associated with the membrane fraction (> 10%), independent of the growth substrate. This cytochrome is a tetraheme cytochrome of 13,700 Da molecular mass with a midpoint redox potential of -0.210 V.M. rubra does not reduce sulfur or ferric iron compounds. Since this cytochrome appears not to be involved in the energy metabolism it is concluded that it is a remnant of sulfur-reducing ancestors of this bacterium, without a conceivable physiological function in its present energy metabolism.

RESUMO

Eighty-two clients who were transferred from a residential institution to foster-care homes were provided nutrition services as part of their Individual Program Plans. Findings of the nutrition assessment and intervention were analyzed to document the impact of deinstitutionalization and nutrition services. Nutrition-related problems identified were closely associated to the medical problems. More than half of the clients were diagnosed as having seizures and cerebral palsy and were, therefore, at high nutritional risk because of feeding problems and anticonvulsant-induced malnutrition. Forty-three of the 47 clients who were reassessed showed positive changes in height, weight, triceps skinfold thickness, dietary adequacy, and/or biochemical indices.

RESUMO

Literature relevant to drugs reported as affecting or not affecting nutrient metabolism and diet for developmentally disabled persons was summarized. Many investigators have found side effects of anticonvulsant drugs on vitamin D, calcium, folid acid, and vitamin B12 metabolism. Growth-retarding effects of certain central nervous system stimulants have also been reported. It has beed found that tranquilizers and antidepressant therapy show no effects on nutrient metabolism. Vitamins used in pharmacologic doses are considered as drugs; their therapeutic use was briefly reviewed here. The need for more research on biochemical interaction of drugs and nutrients was recommended.

RESUMO

Sulfur mustard and nitrogen mustard (HN2) are reported to produce neurobehavioral and neuropathological changes in animals and humans, but the mechanisms are unknown. We examined the cytotoxic properties of HN2 in cultures of dividing and post-mitotic neurons and astrocytes, which comprise the majority of cells in the central nervous system. Cultures of rat cerebellar astrocytes, post-mitotic granule cell neurons or dividing and terminally differentiated human SY5Y neuroblastoma cell cultures were treated with various concentrations of HN2 for 24 h. After treatment, culture medium was removed, the cell monolayer was incubated for 30 min with calcein-AM (green, live cells) and propidium iodide (red, dead cells) in control medium, the fluorochrome-containing medium was removed and replaced with control medium and cell density and viability were examined by fluorescence and light microscopy. Extensive cell loss (>90%) was observed in rat neuronal and SY5Y neuroblastoma cell cultures treated with 10 microM HN2, whereas cell loss was similar to controls in comparably treated astrocyte cultures. The DNA from HN2-treated cultures of rat neurons and SY5Y neuroblastoma cells was examined by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection for the major HN2 DNA adduct N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N[2-(7-guaninyl)ethyl]methylamine (GMOH). GMOH was detected in rat neuronal (85 fmol microg(-1) DNA) and SY5Y neuroblastoma cell cultures (46 fmol microg(-1) DNA) treated with 10 microM HN2 for 24 h, but was not detected in comparably treated astrocyte cell cultures. These findings are consistent with HN2 preferentially targeting neurons in vivo, possibly through a mechanism involving DNA damage.

RESUMO

Nine subjects with prelingually acquired, sensorineural, hearing loss were given a three-interval, forced-choice, test of speech pattern contrast perception under two amplification conditions. The first involved adjustment of the low and high frequency outputs of a two-channel Master Hearing Aid to each subject's highest comfortable level, but without compression of the short-term dynamic range of the signal. The second involved the additional compression of a 30 dB input range into the subject's dynamic range of hearing, as measured by the difference between speech awareness threshold and highest comfortable level, in each of the two channels. One of the subjects performed much better with compression than without. Among the other eight, however, there was a small but significant reduction of performance when compression was introduced. It is proposed that the one positive result is due to the increased audibility of speech cues made possible by amplitude compression. It is further proposed that the negative results are due mainly to the distortions of time-intensity cues introduced by amplitude compression. The results suggest that, in terms of potential access to meaningful speech cues, the addition of amplitude compression, to an otherwise optimized signal, is unnecessary, or even detrimental, for most profoundly deaf subjects, but could be beneficial for some.
