Entrapping bioactive ingredients like elderberry extract in hydrogels improves their stability and functionality in food matrices. This study assessed the effect of sequential thermal treatment with ultrasound (US) or high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) and treatment duration on pea protein-psyllium hydrogels as elderberry extract carriers. Measurements included color parameters, extract entrapment efficiency, physical stability, textural properties, microrheology, FT-IR, thermal degradation (TGA), SEM images, total polyphenols content, antioxidant activity, and reducing power. The control hydrogel was obtained using only thermal induction. Both treatments impacted physical stability by affecting biopolymer aggregate structures. Thermal and US combined induction resulted in hydrogels with noticeable color changes and reduced entrapment efficiency. Conversely, thermal and HHP-combined induction, especially with extended secondary treatment (10 min), enhanced hydrogel strength, uniformity, and extract entrapment efficiency (EE = 33% for P10). FT-IR and TGA indicated no chemical structural alterations post-treatment. Sequential thermal and HHP induction preserved polyphenol content, antioxidant activity (ABTS = 5.8 mg TE/g d.m.; DPPH = 11.1 mg TE/g d.m.), and reducing power (RP = 1.08 mg TE/g d.m.) due to the dense hydrogel structure effectively enclosing the elderberry extract. Sequential thermal and HHP induction was more effective in developing pea protein-psyllium hydrogels for elderberry extract entrapment.

In the packaging materials sector, increasing globalization has created the need for increased efforts to develop consumer protection measures. Consequently, new packaging materials are being sought to replace petroleum-based materials in the future. For this reason, global awareness of the environmental problems associated with the use of synthetic and non-degradable packaging has increased the attention paid to bio-packaging based on natural and biodegradable polymers. The bio-packaging sector is developing innovations to address the sustainability issues facing the food packaging industry. Our research has shown that green matcha extract can be a promising source of antioxidants for the production of bioactive pectin films. This study further confirmed that green matcha extract can be a promising source of antioxidants for the production of bioactive pectin films. The antioxidant activity test showed high activity of films containing matcha extract. The antioxidant activity of films without matcha addition, P, PJ, PC, PJC, was negligible. The addition of matcha to the polymer matrix did not significantly affect the mechanical properties (TS, EB) of the films obtained. The addition of cellulose had the greatest effect on changing the mechanical properties. It caused a twofold increase in the mechanical properties of the obtained packaging films. The addition of matcha significantly improved the barrier properties (for PM films, the WVTR was 3.40 [g/m2d]; for PJM films the WVTR was 1.70 [g/m2d]). The green packaging films showed no toxic effects on the plants (Phacelia tanacetifolia, Salvia hispanica, Brassica napus) and invertebrates (Daphnia pulex, Chaoborus, Chironomus aprilinus) tested. The half-solubility time of the membranes in a solution mimicking gastric acid was also determined. The longest half-dissolution time of the films was about 2 min. Our research has therefore shown that the biodegradable and environmentally safe green packaging films with antioxidant activity that we have developed can be used as edible functional casings in the future, e.g., for sausages and other food products.

INTRODUCTION: Paragangliomas are neuroendocrine tumours commonly located in the abdomen, thorax, head and neck. The definitive treatment for these tumours is surgical resection, which in some cases can be very challenging due to the involvement of critical neurovascular structures and their high vascularity. Therefore, pre-operative embolisation may be performed to reduce the risk of complications. This study aimed to present our experience with endovascular embolisation of head and neck paragangliomas (HNP). MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this single-centre study, we reviewed data from consecutive patients with HNP who underwent pre-operative embolisation from 2017 to 2023. The efficacy of embolisation, the method of embolisation, as well as the rate of complications, were noted. RESULTS: A total of 27 patients (15 females) with an average age of 47 years underwent selective embolisation of HNP. Satisfactory embolisation, defined as occlusion of > 75% of the blood supply, was achieved in 22/27 cases (81.5%). The most commonly used embolic agents included coils and microspheres. With the exception of minor vessel dissections in two patients and embolic agent migration in two patients causing reversible occlusion of the intracranial vessels, there were no other complications associated with embolisation. No neurological deficits occurred in relation to the endovascular procedure. CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study indicate that endovascular embolisation of HNP prior to surgical resection is a safe and efficacious procedure, with a relatively low complication rate and associated morbidity.

Clinical data on primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma (PCNSL) patients is mostly generated from prospective studies, and many frail real-world patients are not included. Recently,the diagnosis and treatment of PCNSL patients was confounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, treatment with high-dose cytarabine was linked to increased risk of pneumonia and virus persistence. We report on outcome of the induction regimen R-MIV (rituximab, methotrexate, ifosfamide, and vincristine) involving intensive administration of high-dose methotrexate (3.5 g/m2 ) with ifosfamide, every 2 weeks and rituximab once per week for six doses. The median age and performance status (PS) for 64 patients was 58 years and 2 (PS 3; 22%) respectively. The overall response rate by magnetic resonance imaging/computed tomography (MRI/CT) was 73% (n = 46/63), with an additional 17.5% (n = 11/63) patients without measurable disease at baseline. Grade 3-4 haematological toxicity was low for R-MIV (neutropenia: 25% and thrombocytopenia: 1%). Three patients (4.7%) died from treatment-related toxicity. Co-existence of SARS-CoV-2 infection with cytomegalovirus reactivation and the varicella-zoster virus in two patients was fatal. Fifty patients (78%) were eligible for consolidation. Median progression-free and overall survival were not reached (median follow-up: 44 months). In conclusion, the R-MIV regimen is feasible in routine practice, effective and safe, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gait analysis may serve various purposes related to health care, such as the estimation of elderly people's risk of falling. This paper is devoted to gait analysis based on data from depth sensors which are suitable for use both at healthcare facilities and in monitoring systems dedicated to household environments. This paper is focused on the comparison of three methods for spatiotemporal gait analysis based on data from depth sensors, involving the analysis of the movement trajectories of the knees, feet, and centre of mass. The accuracy of the results obtained using those methods was assessed for different depth sensors' viewing angles and different types of subject clothing. Data were collected using a Kinect v2 device. Five people took part in the experiments. Data from a Zebris FDM platform were used as a reference. The obtained results indicate that the viewing angle and the subject's clothing affect the uncertainty of the estimates of spatiotemporal gait parameters, and that the method based on the trajectories of the feet yields the most information, while the method based on the trajectory of the centre of mass is the most robust.

Drug-induced ototoxicity resulting from therapy with aminoglycoside antibiotics and loop diuretics is one of the main well-known causes of hearing loss in patients. Unfortunately, no specific protection and prevention from hearing loss are recommended for these patients. This study aimed at evaluating the ototoxic effects produced by mixtures of amikacin (AMI, an aminoglycoside antibiotic) and furosemide (FUR, a loop diuretic) in the mouse model as the hearing threshold decreased by 20% and 50% using auditory brainstem responses (ABRs). Ototoxicity was produced by the combinations of a constant dose of AMI (500 mg/kg; i.p.) on FUR-induced hearing threshold decreases, and a fixed dose of FUR (30 mg/kg; i.p.) on AMI-induced hearing threshold decreases, which were determined in two sets of experiments. Additionally, the effects of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC; 500 mg/kg; i.p.) on the hearing threshold decrease of 20% and 50% were determined by means of an isobolographic transformation of interactions to detect the otoprotective action of NAC in mice. The results indicate that the influence of a constant dose of AMI on FUR-induced hearing threshold decreases was more ototoxic in experimental mice than a fixed dose of FUR on AMI-induced ototoxicity. Moreover, NAC reversed the AMI-induced, but not FUR-induced, hearing threshold decreases in this mouse model of hearing loss. NAC could be considered an otoprotectant in the prevention of hearing loss in patients receiving AMI alone and in combination with FUR.

This article presents contemporary opinion on the role of alpha-fetoprotein in oncologic diagnostics and treatment. This role stretches far beyond the already known one-that of the biomarker of hepatocellular carcinoma. The turn of the 20th and 21st centuries saw a significant increase in knowledge about the fundamental role of AFP in the neoplastic processes, and in the induction of features of malignance and drug resistance of hepatocellular carcinoma. The impact of AFP on the creation of an immunosuppressive environment for the developing tumor was identified, giving rise to attempts at immunotherapy. The paper presents current and prospective therapies using AFP and its derivatives and the gene therapy options. We directed our attention to both the benefits and risks associated with the use of AFP in oncologic therapy.

Plants are commonly used in folk medicine. Research indicates that the mechanisms of biological activity of plant extracts may be essential in the treatment of various diseases. In this respect, we decided to test the ethanolic extracts of Bidens tripartita herb (BTH), Galium verum herb (GVH), and Rumicis hydrolapathum root (RHR) on angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties and their total polyphenols content. In vitro studies using endothelial cells were used to see tested extracts' angiogenic/angiostatic and anti-inflammatory properties. The DPPH assay and FRAP analysis were used to detect antioxidant properties of extracts. The Folin-Ciocalteu analysis was used to determine the content of total polyphenols. The results of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis was also presented. In vitro study demonstrated that BTH, GVH, and RHR ethanolic extracts significantly increased cell invasiveness, compared with the control group. Increased endothelial proangiogenic invasiveness was accompanied by reduced metalloproteinase inhibitor 1 (TIMP-1) and raised in metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9). Only BTH and GVH significantly reduced cell proliferation, while BTH and RHR facilitated migration. Additionally, tested extracts reduced the production of proangiogenic platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). The most potent anti-inflammatory capacity showed BTH and GVH, reducing proinflammatory interleukin 8 (CXCL8) and interleukin 6 (Il-6), compared to RHR extract that has slightly less inhibited CXCL8 production without affecting IL-6 production. Moreover, we confirmed the antioxidant properties of all examined extracts. The highest activity was characterized by RHR, which has been correlated with the high content of polyphenols. In conclusion, the modifying influence of examined extracts can be promising in disorders with pathogenesis related to angiogenesis, inflammation and free radicals formation. BTH is the best choice among the three tested extracts with its antiangiogenic and anti-inflammatory properties.

The efficacy of salvage treatment of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients who relapse or progress (rrDLBCL) after initial therapy is limited. Efficacy and safety of ofatumumab with iphosphamide, etoposide and cytarabine (O-IVAC) was evaluated in a single-arm study. Dosing was modified for elderly patients. Patients received up to six cycles of treatment. The primary end-point was the overall response rate (ORR). Patients were evaluated every two cycles and then six and 12 months after treatment. Other end-points included progression-free survival (PFS), event-free survival (EFS), overall survival (OS) and safety. Seventy-seven patients received salvage treatment with O-IVAC. The average age was 56.8 years; 39% had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status of at least 3; 78% had disease of Ann Arbor stage 3 or 4; 58% received one or more prior salvage therapies. The ORR for O-IVAC was 54.5%. The median duration of study follow-up was 70 months. The median PFS and EFS were 16.3 months each. The median OS was 22.7 months. Age, ECOG performance status and the number of prior therapy lines were independent predictors of survival. Treatment-related mortality was 15.5%. O-IVAC showed a high response rate in a difficult-to-treat population and is an attractive treatment to bridge to potentially curative therapies.

INTRODUCTION: Follicular lymphoma (FL) is the most common type of indolent B-cell lymphoma with a favorable prognosis in the majority of patients. The induction treatment is still based on rituximab and chemotherapy, though new anti-CD20 antibody and chemo-free regimen have been recently introduced. The aim of the study was to analyze the management, outcomes, and determinants of prognosis of newly diagnosed patients with FL in real-world experience. METHODS: Data of consecutive patients diagnosed with FL in 5 years period (2011-2015) in three oncohematological centers were reviewed. Variables were compared using Mann-Whitney or χ2 test as appropriate, survival outpoints were calculated using Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: One hundred eighty-one patients were included in the study. The median patients' age at diagnosis was 56.6 years. Low histological grade (G1-G2) was found in 62.1% of patients and advanced clinical stage in 77.0% of patients. ECOG 0 performance status was observed in 57.1% of patients. The median follow-up was 5.91 years. Initially, 31.5% of the patients were qualified to watch-and-wait (W&W) strategy, and 84.0% of the whole patients' group received systemic treatment during the observation period. As induction treatment, 53.9% and 41.4% of patients received RCVP and RCHOP regimens, respectively; 39.8% received rituximab maintenance (RM) after first-line therapy. During follow-up, transformation to aggressive lymphoma occurred in 7.2% of patients. Median overall survival (OS) was not achieved, and median progression-free survival (PFS) was 8.28 years (95% CI; 7.35, NA), 19.6% of patients relapsed during 24 months from the start of the treatment (POD24). Median PFS for POD24 group was 1.1 years (95% CI; 0.56, 1.45) with a median OS longer than 8 years. ECOG 0, low PRIMA PI, and no POD24 were found as determinants of longer PFS and OS. CONCLUSIONS: Our data from clinical practice showed that rituximab and chemotherapy is still an effective method of FL treatment resulting in survival more than 8 years from diagnosis in most patients. RCVP protocol followed with RM is a reasonable choice for the first-line therapy especially in low/intermediate group of patients. The prognosis was significantly worse in patients with POD24. Therefore, searching for precise initial clinical and biological markers is warranted and development therapies to improve prognosis of POD24 patients.

PURPOSE: Evaluation of the utility of the free anterolateral thigh flap reconstruction of the defects resulting from radical temporal bone resection in the management of lateral skull base malignancies in a single institution. METHODS: An analysis of 17 en bloc subtotal petrosectomies for removal of malignant tumours was performed. There were 12 squamous cell carcinomas, 4 basal cell carcinomas and 1 adenoid cystic carcinoma. The tumours were staged with the University of Pittsburgh TNM system. In all patients, the lateral temporal bone with the preservation of the petrous apex and carotid artery was performed. All patients had parotid gland resection. The post-resection defect was reconstructed with an ALT free flap. RESULTS: Tumour radical resection and defect reconstruction with an ALT flap was achieved in all patients without intraoperative complications. The transplants were harvested as fasciocutaneous flaps, 11 perfused by musculocutaneous and 6 by septocutaneous perforators. The ALT flaps had a mean pedicle length of 8 cm (6-12 cm), and the flap size ranged between 6 × 15 cm and 15 × 30 cm. The flaps were supplied by nine facial, five occipital and three maxillary arteries. Recipient-site veins included eight internal jugular, seven facial, one retromandibular and one external jugular vein. All arterial pedicles were anastomosed in an end-to-end manner. The veins were anastomosed with interrupted sutures and in 11 cases with Synovis-Coupler® devices. All the flap transfers were performed successfully. Three patients experienced postoperative complications. CONCLUSIONS: The ALT flap proved to be effective for covering large temporal skull base defects resulting from the radical removal of temporal bone malignancies. The functional and cosmetic results were acceptable with a low complication rate.

Cochlear implants (CI) candidates with chronic otitis media require special attention and management. The need of opening of the inner ear creates potential routes of spread of infection to subarachnoid spaces and lead to meningitis. The aim of the study was to analyse the technique and complications of subtotal petrosectomy (SP) in cochlear implant candidates with chronic otitis media at three different CI centres. A retrospective study was carried out in three Territory Referral Hospitals. The centres follow Fisch's philosophy and surgical techniques of SP. The study group consisted of 19 patients, 4 men and 15 women, aged 12-82 years. All patients underwent SP with either primary or staged CI implantation. Indications for single or a staged management, difficulties during surgery and complications were analysed. Skin and muscle flap design in primary and revision cases as well as imaging follow-up strategy are discussed. In 14 patients implantation was performed in a single stage and in 5 cases in two stages. Follow-up ranged from 8 months to 10 years. All the patients use their implants and there were no major nor minor complications. The use of subtotal petrosectomy with cochlear implants is a safe and efficient technique when strict surgical steps and rules are applied. Closure of the external ear canal after previous meatoplasty can be challenging and extreme care dissecting the skin flaps is required. In patients with extensive cholesteatoma, active discharge from the ear with resistant bacteria or an "unstable" situation, the procedure can be staged.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a benign, locally aggressive nasopharyngeal tumor. Apart from anterior lateral extension to the pterygopalatine fossa, it may spread laterally posterior to the pterygoid process, showing posterior lateral growth pattern, which is less common and more difficult to identify during surgery. We analyzed the routes of lateral spread, modalities useful in its diagnosis, the incidence of lateral extension and its influence on outcomes of surgical treatment. The records of 37 patients with laterally extending JNA treated at our institution between 1987 and 2011 were retrospectively evaluated. Computed tomography was performed in all patients and magnetic resonance imaging in 17 (46 %) patients. CT and MRI were evaluated to determine routes and extension of JNA lateral spread. Anterior lateral extension to the pterygopalatine fossa occurred in 36 (97 %) patients and further to the infratemporal fossa in 20 (54 %) patients. In 16 (43 %) cases posterior lateral spread was observed: posterior to the pterygoid process and/or between its plates. The recurrence rate was 29.7 % (11/37). The majority of residual lesions was located behind the pterygoid process (7/11). Recurrent disease occurred in 3/21 patients with anterior lateral extension, in 7/15 patients with both types of lateral extensions and in 1 patient with posterior lateral extension. JNA posterior lateral extension may spread behind the pterygoid process or between its plates. The recurrence rate in patients with anterior and/or posterior lateral extension is significantly higher than in patients with anterior lateral extension only. Both CT and MRI allow identification of the anterior and posterior lateral extensions.

Paragangliomas (PGs) are slowly growing, usually benign neoplasms. The aim of the study was to analyze the incidence, diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients with multiple paragangliomas of the head and neck. A retrospective review of the records of 84 patients with head and neck PGs, diagnosed and treated in our institution was performed for the years 1983-2013 to identify patients with multiple tumors. Fourteen (16.6 %) patients developed multiple PGs, synchronous or metachronous, within 4-21 years of follow-up. Clinical data of these patients were reviewed to evaluate the diagnosis, location, stage and management strategy. There was a total number of 37 tumors in 14 patients. There were 20/37 (54.0 %) carotid PGs, 9/37 (24.3 %) jugular PGs and 8/37 (21.7 %) vagal PGs. Carotid PGs were observed in 12/14 (86 %) patients and in 8/14 (57 %) cases bilateral tumors occurred. Vagal PGs developed in 7/14 (50 %) patients and bilateral tumors were found in 1/14 (7 %) case. Jugular PGs occurred in 9/14 (64 %) patients. There were 30 synchronous tumors and seven metachronous PGs diagnosed 2-18 years after removal of the first tumor. Single metachronous mediastinal PG occurred. All patients had at least one tumor removed, with histopathological confirmation of the diagnosis. One patient had positive history of familial PGs. Carotid PGs are most common multiple paragangliomas. Radiological survey of the head and neck is required to detect multicentric tumors. Metachronous mediastinal and abdominal tumors may occur. Regular, prolonged follow-up is essential to identify metachronous PGs and possible postoperative gradual ICA occlusion.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a benign lesion with locally aggressive nature. Knowledge of its typical growth patterns is crucial for precise preoperative staging and adequate preoperative patient counseling. This pictorial essay focuses on characteristic radiological features and paths of invasive growth of this rare tumor. Also, the impact of accurate preoperative evaluation of tumor extensions on surgical planning and results of treatment are discussed.

In the present study, ethanolic extracts from the extract of unshelled seeds of Cannabis sativa L. were used to produce films in order not to generate additional waste, taking into view a circular economy. Combinations of apple pectin and citrus pectin in a ratio of 80:20 were used. Film samples containing 0.5, 1.0 and 2.5 [wt%] of the extract were extruded. Antimicrobial, mechanical and barrier properties of the obtained films were tested. Samples with 0.5 [wt%] showed a WVTR of 16.98 [g/m2d]. The water vapour barrier properties of the films decreased with an increase in the amount of extract used. As the amount of extract increased, the transparency of the films decreased linearly to 12.84 [%] (0.5 [wt%]), 4.90 [%] (1.0 [wt%]) and 4.99 [%] (2.5 [wt%]). It was observed that the brightness of the samples decreased with increasing concentration, due to the presence of higher levels of phenolic compounds. Tests carried out showed that the prepared films exhibited inhibitory activity against all micrograms tested. All prepared films had antibacterial activity against the Salmonella typhimurium strain. Paragangliomas are rare tumors originating from the paraventricular bodies of the autonomic nervous system located in the adrenal glands, chest, abdomen, pelvis and head and neck. Tumors of this type account for 0.5% of head and neck cancers, 0.03% of all cancers and their incidence is estimated at 1-30/100,000 per year. Head and Neck Paragangliomas (HNPGL) are localized in carotid body, tympanic cavity or jugular foramen. It is established that HNPGL may be associated with mutations of the SDH complex, with SDHD being the most prevalent. However, SDHB, SDHC and SDHAF are also potential causes. The aforementioned mutations are influenced by various risk factors, including young age, a positive family history of paraganglioma, the presence of metastases and gender The purpose of this study is to summarize the results of genetic testing performed on patients with head and neck paraganglioma and to create an up-to-date genetic diagnosis algorithm for patients with HNPGL based on previous studies published in the literature that can be used in daily practice. Several papers observed that among SDHD mutation carriers, most or all of those studied had HNPGL, and SDHB mutations were more frequently found in the presence of metastasis. Based on the results, it was concluded that there is no basis for genetic testing for VHL in patients without a positive family history. In each algorithm proposed by different authors, proposals for rational genetic diagnosis were analyzed based on the studies cited by the author and the analyses included in our paper. For the analysis of the treatment algorithms, the following were included: Martin, Mannelli, Neumann, Gupta. Subsequently, publications related to the genetic diagnosis of HNPGL were analyzed to verify the proposed algorithms in light of the latest genetic studies and to establish an updated diagnostic management scheme.

The aim of this study was to preliminarily determine the content of bioactive components in the fruiting bodies of four previously unstudied mushroom species: Aleuria aurantia, Phallus hadriani, Phanus conchatus, Geastrum pectinatum, their antioxidant activity and the content of polyphenols, minerals and heavy metals. METHODS: Determination of active compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was carried out in addition to thermogravimetric determinations, quantitative determination of total polyphenols by spectrophotometry using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, determination of antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl radical (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-di-[3-ethylbentiazoline sulphonated] (ATBS). In addition, spectrometric analysis of selected minerals and heavy metals was performed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). RESULTS: The mushrooms analysed varied in terms of their bioactive constituents. They contained components with varying effects on human health, including fatty acids, oleamide, 1,2-dipalmitoylglycerol, (2-phenyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)-methyl ester of oleic acid, deoxyspergualin, 2-methylenocholestan-3-ol, hexadecanoamide, isoallochan, 2,6-diaminopurine, and adenine. All contained polyphenols and varying amounts of minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, copper, silicon and manganese) and exhibited antioxidant properties of varying potency. No exceedances of the permissible concentration of lead and cadmium were observed in any of them. CONCLUSIONS: All of the mushrooms studied can provide material for the extraction of various bioactive compounds with physiological effects. In addition, the presence of polyphenols and minerals, as well as antioxidant properties and the absence of exceeding the permissible concentration of heavy metals, indicate that these species could be interesting material in the design of foods with health-promoting properties, nutraceuticals or dietary supplements. However, the use of the fruiting bodies of these mushrooms requires mandatory toxicological and clinical studies.

Endometriosis is a gynecological condition where endometrium-like tissue grows outside the uterus, posing challenges in understanding and treatment. This article delves into the deep cellular and molecular processes underlying endometriosis, with a focus on the crucial roles played by cyclins and cytoskeletal proteins in its pathogenesis, particularly in the context of Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT). The investigation begins by examining the activities of cyclins, elucidating their diverse biological roles such as cell cycle control, proliferation, evasion of apoptosis, and angiogenesis among ectopic endometrial cells. A comprehensive analysis of cytoskeletal proteins follows, emphasizing their fundamental biological roles and their specific significance to endometriotic cell features. This review sheds light on the interconnected pathways through which cyclins and cytoskeletal proteins converge, contributing to the genesis and progression of endometriosis. Understanding these molecular complexities not only provides insight into the underlying causes of the disease but also holds promise for the development of specific therapeutic approaches, ushering in a new era in the management of this devastating disorder.

Leonurus cardiaca is a perennial plant indigenous to central Europe and Scandinavia, but it is also found in the area spanning temperate Russia to central Asia. It has been introduced to North America and has become established locally in the wild. Motherwort (Leonuri cardiacae herba) consists of aerial parts of Leonurus cardiaca gathered during the flowering period, dried at 35 °C and, according to European Pharmacopoeia 7th edition, should contain a minimum of 0.2% flavonoids, expressed as hyperoside. Compounds belonging to the group of monoterpenes, diterpenes, triterpenes, nitrogen- containing compounds, phenylpropanoids, flavonoids and phenolic acids, as well as volatile oils, sterols and tannins, have been identified in motherwort. Traditionally, extracts of the herb have been used internally, mainly for nervous heart conditions and digestive disorders. However, they have also been used for bronchial asthma, climacteric symptoms and amenorrhoea, as well as externally in wounds and skin inflammations. Mild negative chronotropic, hypotonic and sedative effects can be attributed to the herb and preparations thereof. Pharmacological studies have confirmed its antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity, as well as its effects on the heart and the circulatory system. Sedative and hypotensive activity has been demonstrated in clinical trials.
