BACKGROUND: Diclofenac (DF) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) generally prescribed for the treatment of pain. In spite of the widespread use of DF, hepatotoxicity has been reported after its administration. The current study discloses new evidence as regards of the curative effects of chrysin (CHR) on DF-induced hepatotoxicity by regulating oxidative stress, apoptosis, autophagy, and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. METHODS: The animals were separated into five different groups. Group-I was in control. Group-II received CHR-only (50 mg/kg bw, p.o.) on all 5 days. Group-III received DF-only (50 mg/kg bw, i.p.) on 4th and 5th day. Group-IV received DF (50 mg/kg bw) + CHR (25 mg/kg, bw) and group-V received DF (50 mg/kg, bw) + CHR (50 mg/kg, bw) for 5 days. RESULTS: DF injection was associated with increased MDA while reduced GSH level, activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase and mRNA levels of HO-1 and Nrf2 in the liver. DF injection caused apoptosis and autophagy in the liver by up-regulating caspase-3, Bax, LC3A, and LC3B levels and down-regulating Bcl-2. DF also caused ER stress by increasing mRNA transcript levels of ATF-6, IRE1, PERK, and GRP78. Additionally, it was observed that DF administration up-regulated MMP2 and MMP9. However, treatment with CHR at a dose of 25 and 50 mg/kg considerably ameliorated oxidative stress, apoptosis, autophagy, and ER stress in liver tissue. CONCLUSION: Overall, the data of this study indicate that liver damage associated with DF toxicity could be ameliorated by CHR administration.

The mechanism of action of omalizumab in urticaria is still not literally known. This study examines the serum values of substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), and interleukin-31 (IL-31) in patients using omalizumab. In this study, 30 patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) who were going to be treated with omalizumab and 20 healthy volunteers took part. Demographic data, clinical data, and disease activity scores were noted. For serum SP, CGRP, NPY, and IL-31 values, 10 mL of blood were taken from the patients before starting the treatment, 3 months after the treatment, at the end of the 6th month, and from healthy volunteers all at once. The change in values measured at baseline, 3rd month, and 6th month was analyzed by the Friedman Test. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the parameters obtained from the patients and control groups. The significance level was set at p=0.05. SP, CGRP, NPY, and IL-31 values were all statistically significantly lower in the CSU patient group compared to the control group. After treatment, the levels of SP and CGRP in the serum went up, and the levels of serum IL-31 went down. These changes were statistically significant. This study supports the view that omalizumab does not only affect IgE receptors but also affects mast cells through other mechanisms. According to our knowledge, this is the first study to show that omalizumab therapy and serum CGRP levels are related.

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a main active component of propolis and a flavonoid, is one of the natural products that has attracted attention in recent years. CAPE, which has many properties such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-fungal, has shown many pharmacological potentials, including protective effects on multiple organs. Interestingly, molecular docking studies showed the possibility of binding of CAPE with replication enzyme. In addition, it was seen that in order to increase the binding security of the replication enzyme and CAPE, modifications can be made at three sites on the CAPE molecule, which leads to the possibility of the compound working more powerfully and usefully to prevent the proliferation of cancer cells and reduce its rate. Also, it was found that CAPE has an inhibitory effect against the main protease enzyme and may be effective in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2. This review covers in detail the importance of CAPE in alternative medicine, its pharmacological value, its potential as a cancer anti-proliferative agent, its dual role in radioprotection and radiosensitization, and its use against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Patients with head and neck cancer who receive radiotherapy experience serious side-effects during and after their treatment. Radiotherapy affects the salivary glands, causing a change in the composition of the saliva and a decrease in its flow. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether Nigella sativa oil (NSO) has a possible protective effect in preventing the harmful effects of free radicals formed by radiotherapy in rats. Thirty-six male Wistar-Albino rats weighing 200 ± 20 g were used. The rats were randomly divided into four groups: control, sham, irradiation (IR), and IR plus NSO groups. Xanthine oxidase (XO), nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activities, nitric oxide (NOâ¢), peroxynitrite (ONOO-), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were determined in salivary tissue of rats. NOS, XO activities, NOâ¢, ONOO-, and MDA values were found to be significantly higher in the irradiated rats only compared to all other groups. As a results, NSO reduces oxidative/nitrosative stress markers and has antioxidant effects, which also augments the antioxidant capacity in the salivary tissue of rats.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is considered an effective and fast option for treating patients with major depressive disorder. With the increase in treatment options, the determination of biomarkers that predict which treatment will benefit patients the most has been a matter of curiosity for researchers. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this study, we aimed to determine the changes in serum concentrations of S100B, a neurotrophic factor thought to play a role in psychiatric disorders after repetitive TMS (rTMS) and anti-depressant drugs (AD) therapy in patients with major depressive disorder(MDD).In this cohort study, rTMS was applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex(DLPFC) of drug-resistant MDD patients, while another group of MDD patients was treated with AD for three weeks. Patients were evaluated by psychometric tests and serum S100B concentration at baseline and following intervention. There was also a healthy control group in which patients' S100B values were compared at baseline. RESULTS: There is a population with a total of 48 participants.(16 healthy controls,16 anti-depressant treatment groups, 16 individuals who received rTMS in addition to anti-depressant ) A total of 48 participants completed the study, and the S100B levels of the rTMS group and the anti-depressant drug group were found to be significantly higher than the healthy control group. S100B values, which were higher in the anti-depressant and rTMS groups compared to healthy controls, showed a significant reduction in group time interaction (start and end of treatment). CONCLUSION: rTMS of DLPFC demonstrated an effective complementary treatment for treatment-resistant patients with MDD, especially for patients with relatively high serum S100B concentrations.

OBJECTIVE: As newborns are exposed to oxidative stress during delivery, cord clamping techniques play significant role on antioxidant status. In this study, we aimed to show the relationship between early cord clamping (ECC), delayed cord clamping (DCC), and cut-umbilical cord milking (C-UCM) techniques with total oxidant capacity (TOC), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and peroxynitrite levels. STUDY DESIGN: Sixty-nine term infants were selected with Apgar's score of 7 and above in the 1 minute and 5 minutes. The mothers of all infants had uncomplicated pregnancy, had no congenital anomaly, and delivered by cesarean section. Newborns were randomized to one of three groups: ECC (n: 23), DCC (n: 23), or C-UCM (n: 23). After all newborn babies were taken under radiant heater, blood samples were collected from the UC. The plasma samples were then frozen and stored at -80°C until analysis and TOC, TAC, and peroxynitrite levels were studied. RESULTS: The ages of the mothers participating in the study were between 17 and 42 years, with an average of 29.14 ± 6.28. Thirty (43.5%) of the babies were girls and 39 (56.5%) were boys. The 5-minute Apgar's score of the babies in ECC group was significantly lower than the babies in DCC and cut cord milking group (p = 0.034; p = 0.034; p < 0.05). The TOC, oxidative stress index (OSI), and peroxynitrite measurements of three groups did not differ statistically. The TAC value of the C-UCM group was significantly higher than the patients with the ECC and DCC groups (p = 0.002; p = 0.019; p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: C-UCM and DCC would be feasible methods by increasing antioxidant status and providing protective effect on the future health of the term newborns. Background: The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms in epilepsy, one of the most common neurological diseases, are still unknown. Oxidative/nitrosative stress is considered a possible mechanism involved in epileptogenesis. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) is involved in the pathogenesis of signal regulation, cellular damage and central nervous system conditions in living organisms. In this study, we aimed to compare peoxynitrite (ONOO-), a marker of nitrosative stress, total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), DNA damage marker, levels in epileptic patients receiving monotherapy and polytherapy with the healthy control group.Methods: The study included 120 patients with diagnosis of epilepsy and 40 healthy volunteers as controls. The TOS, TAS, OSI, ONOO- and 8-OHdG were studied in all groups.Results: The study group included 30 girls (50%) and 30 boys (50%) receiving monotherapy and 31 girls (51.7%) and boys 49.3%) receiving polytherapy while control group included 19 girls (47.5%) and 21 boys (52.5%). The TOS and OSI values were found to be significantly higher in polytherapy group when compared to monotherapy and control groups). The ONOO- values were found to be significantly lower in polytherapy group when compared to monotherapy and control groups. In addition, ONOO- values were found to be higher in monotherapy group than controls. There was no significant difference in 8-OHdG values between the groups.Conclusions: Significant increases were observed in TOS and OSI parameters in polytherapy group when compared to monotherapy and control groups, suggesting that antiepileptic treatment enhances oxidative stress. Lack of significant difference in 8-OHdG suggested that the treatment is effective in patients and that no DNA damage occurred yet.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated the relationship between electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and markers of nitrosative stress and oxidative DNA damage. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine changes in nitrosative stress and oxidative DNA damage in patients with a depressive episode treated with ECT. METHODS: The current study included 48 patients with a depressive episode treated with ECT and 30 healthy control participants. First, the serum nitrosative stress markers of nitric oxide (NOâ¢), nitric oxide synthase (NOS), and peroxynitrite (ONOO-) and the oxidative DNA damage marker 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) were compared between the study and control groups. These parameters were also compared pre- and post-treatment for the study group. RESULTS: NOâ¢, NOS, and ONOO- levels were significantly higher in patients with depressive disorder (DD) than in the control group. NO⢠and NOS levels significantly decreased in the ECT group after treatment while 8-OHdG levels significantly increased. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings suggest that ECT may have reduced nitrosative stress levels while increasing oxidative DNA damage. More research is now needed to better understand the issue.KEY POINTSNitrosative stress levels can increase in patients with depressive disorder.Electroconvulsive therapy may reduce nitrosative stress while increasing oxidative DNA damage.These results suggest that nitrosative stress plays an important role in the mechanism of action of electroconvulsive therapy.

AIM: To investigate the protective effect of octreotide and lanreotide on ovarian damage in experimental ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury. METHODS: Fifty-six rats were separated into seven groups; group 1: sham group, group 2: surgical control group with 3-h torsion and detorsion, group 3: 0.02 mg/kg s.c. octreotide 30 min before 3-h torsion, group 4; octreotide just after detorsion for 7 days, group 5: octreotide 30 min before torsion and just after detorsion for 7 days, group 6: single time 20 mg/kg s.c. lanreotide before torsion, group 7: single time lanreotide just after detorsion. RESULTS: All histopathological scores except congestion were significantly lower in group 1 than other groups. In addition, hemorrhage (group 2 vs 4: P < 0.05), degeneration (group 2 vs 4: P < 0.05, group 2 vs 5: P < 0.01 and group 2 vs 6: P < 0.05) and total damage score (group 2 vs 4: P < 0.05, group 2 vs 5: P < 0.05, group 2 vs 6: P < 0.05 and group 2 vs 7: P < 0.05) were significantly lower than other groups. Moreover, ovarian tissue total oxidant status and oxidative stress index levels were significantly decreased in groups 5 (both P < 0.05) and 7 (both P < 0.05) when compared to group 2. Furthermore, tissue levels of peroxynitrite were significantly higher in group 2 than groups 1, 3 and 5 (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Octreotide and lanreotide have a protective role against ischemia-reperfusion damage in rat torsion detorsion model by improving histopathological and biochemical findings including tissue levels of total oxidant status, oxidative stress index and peroxynitrite.

Aldose reductase (AR) is the first and rate-limiting enzyme of the polyol pathway, which converts glucose to sorbitol in an NADPH-dependent reaction. α-Glycosidase breaks down starch and disaccharides to glucose. Hence, inhibition of these enzymes can be regarded a considerable approach in the treatment of diabetic complications. AR was purified from sheep liver using simple chromatographic methods. The inhibitory effects of pyrazolyl-thiazoles ((3aR,4S,7R,7aS)-2-(4-{1-[4-(4-bromophenyl)thiazol-2-yl]-5-(aryl)-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-3-yl}phenyl)-3a,4,7,7a-tetrahydro-1H-4,7-methanoisoindole-1,3(2H)-dione derivatives; 3a-i) on AR and α-glycosidase enzymes were investigated. All compounds showed a good inhibitory action against AR and α-glycosidase. Among these compounds, compound 3d exhibited the best inhibition profiles against AR, with a Ki value of 7.09 ± 0.19 µM, whereas compound 3e showed the lowest inhibition effects, with a Ki value of 21.89 ± 1.87 µM. Also, all compounds showed efficient inhibition profiles against α-glycosidase, with Ki values in the range of 0.43 ± 0.06 to 2.30 ± 0.48 µM, whereas the Ki value of acarbose was 12.60 ± 0.78 µM. Lastly, molecular modeling approaches were implemented to predict the binding affinities of compounds against AR and α-glycosidase. In addition, the ADME analysis of the molecules was performed.

Background/aim: To evaluate the protective effect of melatonin on ovarian ischemia reperfusion injury in a rat model. Materials and methods: Forty-eight rats were separated equally into 6 groups. Group 1: sham; Group 2: surgical control with 3-h bilateral ovarian torsion and detorsion; Group 3: intraperitoneal 5% ethanol (1 mL) just after detorsion (as melatonin was dissolved in ethanol); Group 4: 10 mg/kg intraperitoneal melatonin 30 min before 3-h torsion; Group 5:10 mg/kg intraperitoneal melatonin just after detorsion; Group 6:10 mg/kg intraperitoneal melatonin 30 min before torsion and just after detorsion. Both ovaries and blood samples were obtained 7 days after detorsion for histopathological and biochemical analysis. Results: In Group 1, serum levels of total oxidant status (TOS) (µmol H2O2 equivalent/g wet tissue)were significantly lower than in Group2 (P = 0.0023), while tissue TOS levels were lower than in Group 3 (P = 0.0030). Similarly, serum and tissue levels of peroxynitrite in Group 6were significantly lower than those ofGroup 2 (P = 0.0023 and P = 0.040, respectively). Moreover, serum oxidative stress index (OSI) (arbitrary unit) levels were significantly increased in Group 2 when compared to groups 1 and 6 (P = 0.0023 and P= 0.0016, respectively) and in Group 3 with respect to groups 1, 4, 5, and 6 (P = 0.0023, P = 0.0026, P = 0.0008, and P = 0.0011, respectively). Furthermore, there was a significant decrease in histopathological scores including follicular degeneration, vascular congestion, hemorrhage, and inflammation in the melatonin and sham groups in comparison with control groups. Additionally, primordial follicle count was significantly higher in Group 6 than in Group 2 (P = 0.0002). Conclusion: Melatonin attenuates ischemia reperfusion damage in a rat torsion/detorsion model by improving histopathological and biochemical findings including OSI and peroxynitrite.

Background and objectives: In this study, the aim was to investigate Urotensin 2 (U-II) levels and oxidant/antioxidant system parameters in pregnancies with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Materials and Methods: A total of 36 healthy, pregnant women who had not been diagnosed with IUGR and 36 pregnant women who had been diagnosed with IUGR at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Outpatient Clinic at Gaziantep University Hospital were enrolled in this study. The serum total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), thiol-disulfide levels, U-II measurements, and oxidative stress index (OSI) calculations were carried out at the biochemistry laboratory at Gaziantep University. Results: According to this study, there was no statistically significant difference between the group with IUGR and the control group of healthy, pregnant women in terms of total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), native thiol, total thiol, disulfide, disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol, native thiol/total thiol, and U-II values. There was, however, a positive linear correlation between TOS and total thiol levels in the group with IUGR (p = 0.021, r = 0.384), and a positive linear correlation between OSI and total thiol values in the control group (p = 0.049, r = 0.330). In addition, there was a negative correlation between disulfide levels and gestational weeks at birth in the group with IUGR (p = 0.027, r = 0.369). Conclusions: Consequently, there was no significant difference between the control group and the group with pregnancies complicated by idiopathic IUGR in terms of serum oxidant/antioxidant system parameters and U-II levels. It is necessary to conduct more extensive studies evaluating placental, maternal, and fetal oxidative stress in conjunction in order to investigate the role of oxidative stress in IUGR.

Background/aim: The aims of this study were to determine the levels of the total antioxidant status (TAS), the total oxidant status (TOS), the oxidative stress index (OSI), and the concentration of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and M (IgM) in colostrum, and evaluate relationships between these parameters and maternal age, maternal parity, and infant sex. Materials and methods: The analysis was performed in serum samples of colostrum which were collected from 90 mothers on the first day of lactation between 10:00 and 12:00 AM Results: The measurements established that no significant association existed between the TAS level of colostrum and parity, maternal age, or infant sex. However, mothers 18 to 30 years of age had significantly lower colostrum TOS and OSI levels compared with mothers older than 30 years of age. IgA and IgM values of the colostrum of primiparous mothers were significantly higher than those of multiparous mothers, whereas no correlations existed with the age of the mother. Additionally, significantly higher colostrum IgA and IgM values were observed in female infants fed colostrum compared with male infants. Conclusion: In conclusion, sex-based hormonal changes in mothers during pregnancy may be associated with the different colostral immunoglobulin levels for male and female infants.

To determine the levels of serum total sialic acid (TSA) in patients with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) and their gestational age-matched controls. Thirty pregnant women with HG, and 30 healthy pregnant women at up to 14 weeks of gestation were enrolled in this preliminary study. Total sialic acid levels in maternal serum were measured using the quantitative sandwich ELISA method. We observed statistically significant difference in TSA levels between HG and the control groups (p = .003). The identification of the role of SA in the prediction, diagnosis and follow-up of HG warrants more comprehensive studies in the future. Impact Statement What is already known on this subject? The derivatives of neuraminic acid are collectively referred to as sialic acid (SA). Changes in SA levels are known to trigger various conditions and disorders, including inflammatory, cardiovascular, neurological and endocrine diseases. Although a sensitive test capable of identifying hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) would be useful for diagnosis purposes, such a test is currently not available. Studies focussing on identifying new potential indicators and biomarkers for HG - as well as identifying their relevance in establishing diagnosis and assessing disease severity - would not only assist in elucidating the underlying causes of this condition but would also contribute to the development of new diagnostic tests for HG. What the results of this study add? Total sialic acid levels are significantly higher in sera of the patients with HG. The present study is the first in the literature to assess total sialic acid levels in patients with HG and healthy pregnant women before 14 weeks of gestation. What the implications are of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Total sialic acid levels could give an idea to clinicians in the etiopathogenesis of HG. The identification of the role of sialic acid in the prediction, diagnosis and follow-up of HG warrants more comprehensive studies in the future.

AIMS: There are limited published data about the role of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In addition, oxidative stress and oxidative DNA damage have not been investigated together in OCD. In this study, we aimed to evaluate oxidative stress and oxidative DNA damage in patients with OCD. METHODS: Forty-two patients with OCD who were diagnosed in the Psychiatry Clinic of Gaziantep University and 38 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Serum 8-hydroxideoxiguanosine (8-OHdG), total antioxidant status, total oxidant status evaluation and oxidative stress index calculation were conducted in Gaziantep University Biochemical Laboratory. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the total antioxidant status, total oxidant status and oxidative stress index levels between the patients and control group. However, 8-OHdG levels were significantly higher in OCD patients than controls (P = 0.022). In addition, 8-OHdG levels were significantly lower in patients who took treatment than in patients who were newly diagnosed (P = 0.016). CONCLUSIONS: In our study, we found that oxidative DNA damage increased in OCD patients even though oxidative stress was normal. In addition, DNA damage was lower in patients who were treated compared to those without treatment.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of migraine, but no published studies have examined both oxidative stress levels and oxidative DNA damage on the same patient group. METHODS: In this study, total oxidant status (TOS); total antioxidant status (TAS); oxidative stress index (OSI); and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), which is an indicator of oxidative DNA damage, were measured in the plasma samples of 50 prophylactic unmediated migraineurs (11 with aura and 39 without aura) and 30 matched healthy volunteers. RESULTS: No significant differences in TAS, TOS, and OSI values were observed between patients and controls. However, plasma 8-OHdG levels were found to be significantly higher in migraine patients than in the control group (p = 0.001); this increase in plasma 8-OHdG levels was more prominent in cases with migraine without aura than with aura (p = 0.001). Our results suggested an evidence of oxidative stress-related DNA damage in migraine. CONCLUSION: DNA damage reflected by plasma 8-OHdG did not studied in migraine before. Therefore, further research on oxidative stress-related DNA damage and the extent of its clinical manifestations in migraine may provide additional data to our current knowledge.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant and radioprotective effects of Nigella sativa oil (NSO) and thymoquinone (TQ) against ionizing radiation-induced cataracts in lens after total cranium irradiation (IR) of rats with a single dose of 5 gray (Gy). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-four Sprague-Dawley rats were used for the experiment. The rats were randomly divided into six groups. Group A received total cranium IR plus NSO (1 g kg(-1) d(-1)) orally through an orogastric tube. Group B received total cranium IR plus TQ (50 mgkg(-1) d(-1)) daily by intraperitoneal injection. Group C received 5 Gy of gamma IR as a single dose to total cranium plus 1 ml saline. Group D1 just received 1 ml saline. Group D2 just received dimethyl sulfoxide. Group D3 did not receive anything. RESULTS: At the end of the 10th d, cataract developed in 80% of the rats in IR group only. After IR, cataract rate dropped to 20% and 50% in groups which were treated with NSO and TQ, respectively, and was limited at grades 1 and 2. Nitric oxide synthase activity, nitric oxide and peroxynitrite levels in the radiotherapy group were higher than those of all other groups. CONCLUSIONS: The results implicate a major role for NSO and TQ in preventing cataractogenesis in ionizing radiation-induced cataracts in the lenses of rats, wherein NSO were found to be more potent.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the antioxidant status (TAS), oxidant status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) in patients with snake envenomation and to learn more about the pathophysiology of snake envenomation. METHOD: Between May 2009 and October 2010, 47 patients were admitted to our emergency department with snake bites, and as a control group 20 healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. Serum, plasma, and erythrocyte components were prepared for all patients on admission and at the control after 1 month. Serum TOS/TAS levels were measured. RESULTS: No correlation was observed among age, gender and the levels of TAS, TOS and OSI. TAS, TOS and OSI levels were higher in snake envenomation patients upon arrival at the emergency department than in the healthy control group. Upon admission, all levels of patients with snake envenomation were higher than the control levels taken after 1 month. CONCLUSIONS: Serum TAS, TOS and OSI levels increase in snake envenomation patients. The results obtained in this study indicate that the snake bite was associated with a shift to an oxidative state, and oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathophysiology of snake envenomation.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidative stress (TOS) values in patients with myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). METHOD: The study comprised 38 patients diagnosed with MPS and 30 healthy volunteers. The age, body mass index (BMI) and pain scores (evaluation by visual analogue scales) of all the participants were recorded. The TAC, TOS and oxidative stress index (OSI) levels were compared between the MPS and control groups. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the MPS and control groups in respect of demographic characteristics. The TAC levels were determined to be significantly lower and TOS levels and OSI values, significantly higher in the MPS patients than in the control group. CONCLUSION: The results of this study determined that the oxidant/antioxidant balance was impaired in MPS patients and thus MPS can be considered to be related to an increase in oxidative stress.

Stresses caused by ionizing radiation can also damage tissues and organs through the circulatory system. In this study, we aimed to determine the radioprotective effect of propolis, a natural and powerful antioxidant product, against oxidative liver damage caused by cranial irradiation. Thirty-two male albino Sprague-Dawley rats, divided into four groups, were designed as sham group, irradiation (IR) group, propolis plus IR, control group of propolis. Biochemical parameters were measured in liver tissue of rats. While Total enzymatic superoxide scavenging activity (TSSA) and non-enzymatic superoxide scavenging activity (NSSA), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities of all groups were statistically significantly higher than rats receiving only-irradiation, Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity in the IR group was significantly lower than in the sham control group and IR + propolis group. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the IR group was found to be significantly higher than both the sham control group and the propolis control group, but lower than the IR + propolis group. Malondialdehyde level and xanthine oxidase activity were higher in the IR group than in the other groups. Compared to the sham control group, in the group treated with propolis, a significant elevation in antioxidant parameters, specifically TSSA, NSSA, SOD, and GST activities, was noted, with corresponding increases of 32.3%, 23.2%, 47.6%, and 22.6%, respectively. Our findings show that propolis can be a radioprotective agent against ionized radiation damage by increasing antioxidant activity and reducing oxidant stress in liver tissue.
