Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a recognized central nervous system inflammation complication. Several microRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) have been documented to be vital modulators in peripheral and central nervous system inflammation. Based on whole transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis, this study aims to reveal the possible molecular mechanisms by which miR-122-5p affects the inflammatory response in the peripheral and central nervous system in a mouse model of ICH. Differentially expressed ICH-related miRNAs were screened. Adeno-associated viral vectors were used to knock down miR-122-5p in mice to evaluate the effect of miR-122-5p on peripheral and central nervous system inflammation. The downstream target gene of miR-122-5p was analyzed. Neurons were isolated from mice and treated with hemin to construct an in vitro model of ICH, followed by transduction with miR-122-5p mimic or combined with oe-MLLT1. The neurons were then co-cultured with microglia BV2 to assess their activation. It was found that miR-122-5p was highly expressed in ICH, and MLLT1 was lowly expressed. In vivo experiments showed that miR-122-5p knockdown decreased neurological deficits, BBB permeability, and inflammation in the peripheral and central nervous system in ICH mice. It involved its binding to MLLT1 and downregulation of the activity of the PI3K/AKT pathway. In vitro data exhibited that miR-122-5p stimulated the generation of inflammatory factors and microglia activation by targeting MLLT1 and inhibiting the PI3K/AKT pathway. Collectively, our work reveals a novel miR-122-5p/MLLT1-mediated regulatory network in ICH that may be a viable target for neuroinflammation alleviation.

Calderon's method has been successfully used for the direct image reconstruction in electrical capacitance tomography. In the method, the truncation radius adopted in numerical integral greatly influences the reconstruction results. In the past, the truncation radius is selected as a constant empirically according to the permittivity distribution pattern and noise level. In this paper, the influence of the truncation radius in Calderon's method on the reconstruction results was first analyzed by numerical simulation. Then, a strategy for adaptive selection of the truncation radius was proposed. The amplitude information of the elements in the scattering transform matrix computed from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DN) map was used to determine the range for the truncation radius selection, and the phase information was further used to select a proper truncation radius value within this selection range. Finally, experiments were carried out to verify the strategy. Experimental results showed that small relative image error and good visual effect could be obtained by using the truncation radius selected by the proposed strategy.

Conventional electrical resistance tomography (ERT) sensors suffer from the fringe effect, i.e., severe distortion of the electric field on both ends of the measurement electrodes, leading to a 3D sensing region for a 2D sensor. As a result, the objects outside an ERT sensor plane affect the sensing and hence image, i.e., deteriorating the image quality. To address this issue, a multiple-plane ERT sensor scheme is proposed in this paper. With this scheme, auxiliary sensor planes are used to provide references for the fringe effect of the measurement plane, for compensation by subtracting the weighed influence of the fringe effect. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme, either three-plane or two-plane sensor, can compensate for the fringe effect induced by objects outside the measurement plane with a variety of axial object distributions, i.e., several non-conductive bars or conductive bars placed at different cross-sectional and axial positions inside the sensor. Experiments were carried out. Images obtained with single-plane and multiple-plane ERT sensors are compared, and the proposed compensation scheme has been hence verified.

Background: Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is an acute, fulminant, opportunistic fungal infection that usually occurs in diabetes or immunocompromised patients. Amphotericin B combined with surgical debridement remains the standard treatment, although it is controversial due to its lager nephrotoxicity. Thus far, no studies have reported the treatment for ROCM-associated fungal endophthalmitis because the exact pathogenesis and transmission routes in ROCM remain unclear. Here, we reported a case of ROCM complicated with fungal endophthalmitis treated favorably with amphotericin B colloidal dispersion (ABCD) in combination with other antifungals and surgical debridement. Case Presentation: A 34-year-old woman with diabetes was admitted to our hospital owing to right-sided headache for 8 days, blindness with swelling in the right eye for 5 days, and blindness in the left eye for 1 day. MRI showed that the patient had sphenoid sinus, sinuses, frontal lobe lesions, and proptosis of the right eye. Metagenomic sequencing revealed that the patient had Rhizopus oryzae infection. During hospitalization, the patient received intravenous ABCD, oral posaconazole, and topical amphotericin B and underwent surgical debridement. After 67 days of treatment, the patient's condition was significantly improved, and limb muscle strength showed grade V. Rhizopus oryzae showed negative results, and conjunctival swelling decreased. Additionally, no nephrotoxicity occurred during treatment. After discharge, the patient's treatment was transitioned to oral posaconazole and she was free of complaints during the 30-day follow-up without any additional treatment for ROCM. Conclusion: Treatment with ABCD combined with other antifungal drugs and surgical debridement for ROCM complicated with fungal endophthalmitis showed remarkable efficacy and good safety. Hence, this regimen is a promising treatment strategy for this fatal disease.

As a promising medical imaging modality, electrical impedance tomography (EIT) can image the electrical properties within a region of interest using electrical measurements applied at electrodes on the region boundary. This paper proposes to combine frequency and time difference imaging methods in EIT to simultaneously image bio- and non-conductive targets, where the image fusion is accomplished by applying a wavelet-based technique. To enable image fusion, both time and frequency difference imaging methods are investigated regarding the reconstruction of bio- or non-conductive inclusions in the target region at varied excitation frequencies, indicating that none of those two methods can tackle with the scenarios where both bio- and non-conductive inclusions exist. This dilemma can be resolved by fusing the time difference (td) and appropriate frequency difference (fd) EIT images since they are complementary to each other. Through simulation and in vitro experiment, it is demonstrated that the proposed fusion method can reasonably reconstruct both the bio- and non-conductive inclusions within the lung models established to simulate the ventilation process, which is expected to be beneficial for the diagnosis of lung-tissue related diseases by EIT.

Cerebral hemorrhage is the most common type of human cerebrovascular disease and frequently causes paralysis, vegetative state and mortality. The modulatory actions of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) are vital in the human nervous system. The present study investigated the association between cerebral hemorrhage and the expression of VEGF and HGF in a rat model of cerebral hemorrhage. The therapeutic potential of cerebral hemorrhage was also evaluated using targeted drugs for VEGF and HGF in the cerebral hemorrhage rat model. Behavioral and preclinical changes and the survival rates of rats were assessed after treatment with VEGF receptor (VEGFR) and HGF receptor (HGFR). The results of Tarlov scores demonstrated that movement of limbs and coordination when walking were significantly improved in moderate and severe hemorrhage lesions in the VEGFR plus HGFR­treated group and mainly alleviated in primary hemorrhage lesions compared with rats in the single VEGFR or HGFR­treated groups and the control group (**P<0.01). Decreasing expression levels of VEGF and HGF were observed in the neural tissue of animals treated with VEGFR plus HGFR compared with the control group (**P<0.01). These preclinical observations indicated that VEGF and HGF serve a function in the pathological injury and repair of cerebral tissue in rats with cerebral hemorrhages. The therapeutic benefits of VEGFR plus HGFR suggested that VEGFR plus HGFR may be candidate drugs for cerebral hemorrhage, and thus offer a promising treatment for clinicians and doctors.
