RESUMO

As key enablers of Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things, sensors are among the first devices which are to encounter fast physical transformation (from rigid to flexible) as of large-scale utilization of printing technologies. In order to step-up this process, adaptation of conventional fabrication technologies (based on metallization) employed in sensors' development should be tested and demonstrated. Within this paper, we are reporting the functionality of dielectrophoresis (DEP) for electromanipulation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as sensing element, at the level of printed interdigitated electrodes. First, we present the flatbed screen-printed process of interdigitated microelectrodes on flexible substrate with tailored geometries employed afterwards for generating convenient dielectrophoretic forces of optimal magnitude and frequency for trapping MWCNTs. Successful dielectrophoresis operability of MWCNTs across silver-based screen-printed µIDE (interdigitated microelectrodes) provided with electrode gaps of ≈ 150 µm was validated and suitable values of the signal frequencies for avoiding parasitic electrokinetic phenomena (AC electro-osmosis, electrothermal effect) occurring simultaneously with DEP were identified. Time-dependent effect of DEP over MWCNTs bridges formation is discussed, as well as voltage magnitude contribution.

RESUMO

Flame-resistant polymer composites were prepared based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a polymer matrix and a polyphosphonate as flame retardant. Oxalic acid was used as crosslinking agent. LiClO4, BaTiO3, and graphene oxide were also incorporated into PVA matrix to increase the ionic conductivity. The obtained film composites were investigated by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and microscale combustion tests. Incorporating fire retardant (PFRV), BaTiO3, and graphene oxide (GO) into a material results in increased resistance to fire when compared to the control sample. A thermogravimetric analysis revealed that, as a general trend, the presence of PFRV and BaTiO3 nanoparticles enhances the residue quantity at a temperature of 700 °C from 7.9 wt% to 23.6 wt%. Their dielectric properties were evaluated with Broad Band Dielectric Spectroscopy. The electrical conductivity of the samples was determined and discussed in relation to the LiClO4 content. The electrical properties, including permittivity and conductivity, are being enhanced by the use of LiClO4. Additionally, a relaxation peak has been observed in the dielectric losses at frequencies exceeding 103 Hz. The electrical properties, including permittivity and conductivity, are being enhanced by the use of LiClO4. Additionally, a relaxation peak has been observed in the dielectric losses at frequencies exceeding 103 Hz. Out of the various composites tested, the composite containing 35 wt% of LiClO4 exhibits the highest alternating current (AC) conductivity, with a measured value of 2.46 × 10-3 S/m. Taking into consideration all the aspects discussed, these improved composites are intended for utilization in the manufacturing of Li-Ion batteries.

RESUMO

This study proposes a feasible approach for the rapid, sensitive, and label-free identification of cancerous cells based on dielectrophoretic (DEP) manipulation and electrical characterization. In this method, the concentration of target cells at the level of customized microelectrodes via DEP is first determined, followed by an electrical impedance evaluation. The study demonstrates the capacity of the methodology to electrically differentiate HT-29 cancer cells from healthy blood cells based on their impedance spectra. Within a higher frequency domain, the electrical impedance of trapped cancer cells was significantly lower compared with the normal ones. In order to evaluate the functionality and reproducibility of the proposed method, the influence of the DEP and EIS (electrical impedance spectroscopy) operating voltages on the electrical characterization of trapped HT-29 cells was analyzed.

RESUMO

PbTi1-xFexO3-δ (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7) ceramics were prepared using the classical solid-state reaction method. The investigated system presented properties that were derived from composition, microstructure, and oxygen deficiency. The phase investigations indicated that all of the samples were well crystallized, and the formation of a cubic structure with small traces of impurities was promoted, in addition to a tetragonal structure, as Fe3+ concentration increased. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images for PbTi1-xFexO3-δ ceramics revealed microstructures that were inhomogeneous with an intergranular porosity. The dielectric permittivity increased systematically with Fe3+ concentration, increasing up to x = 0.7. A complex impedance analysis revealed the presence of multiple semicircles in the spectra, demonstrating a local electrical inhomogeneity due the different microstructures and amounts of oxygen vacancies distributed within the sample. The increase of the substitution with Fe3+ ions onto Ti4+ sites led to the improvement of the magnetic properties due to the gradual increase in the interactions between Fe3+ ions, which were mediated by the presence of oxygen vacancies. The PbTi1-xFexO3-δ became a multifunctional system with reasonable dielectric, piezoelectric, and magnetic characteristics, making it suitable for application in magnetoelectric devices.

RESUMO

Here, we reported a study on the detection and electrical characterization of both cancer cell line and primary tumor cells. Dielectrophoresis (DEP) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were jointly employed to enable the rapid and label-free differentiation of various cancer cells from normal ones. The primary tumor cells that were collected from two colorectal cancer patients, cancer cell lines (SW-403, Jurkat, and THP-1), and healthy peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were trapped first at the level of interdigitated microelectrodes with the help of dielectrophoresis. Correlation of the cells dielectric characteristics that was obtained via electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) allowed evident differentiation of the various types of cell. The differentiations were assigned to a "dielectric phenotype" based on their crossover frequencies. Finally, Randles equivalent circuit model was employed for highlighting the differences with regard to a series group of charge transport resistance and constant phase element for cancerous and normal cells.

RESUMO

Electromanipulation and electrical characterization of cancerous cells is becoming a topic of high interest as the results reported to date demonstrate a good differentiation among various types of cells from an electrical viewpoint. Dielectrophoresis and broadband dielectric spectroscopy are complementary tools for sorting, identification, and characterization of malignant cells and were successfully used on both primary tumor cells and culture cells as well. However, the literature is presenting a plethora of studies with respect to electrical evaluation of these type of cells, and this review is reporting a collection of information regarding the functioning principles of different types of dielectrophoresis setups, theory of cancer cell polarization, and electrical investigation (including here the polarization mechanisms). The interpretation of electrical characteristics against frequency is discussed with respect to interfacial/Maxwell-Wagner polarization and the parasitic influence of electrode polarization. Moreover, the electrical equivalent circuits specific to biological cells polarizations are discussed for a good understanding of the cells' morphology influence. The review also focuses on advantages of specific low-conductivity buffers employed currently for improving the efficiency of dielectrophoresis and provides a set of synthesized data from the literature highlighting clear differentiation between the crossover frequencies of different cancerous cells.
