Reproductive interference can lead to the exclusive distribution of species. Reports on reproductive interference between alien species are scarce, although alien species are becoming more abundant and evaluations of the interference between aliens and its influence on community structure are essential. We therefore investigated the presence of interference in two alien species of Veronica, V. cymbalaria and V. persica. Hand-pollination experiments revealed that heterospecific pollen adversely affected both species, but asymmetrically: in V. cymbalaria, it reduced the number of seeds both before and after conspecific pollination, but in V. persica it reduced the number of seeds only when it occurred before conspecific pollination. Field observation suggested that the number of seeds produced by V. cymbalaria was more influenced by the number of conspecific flowers than by the frequency of surrounding V. persica flowers. Pot experiments did not show a negative effect of heterospecific individuals on the reproductive success of focal species in either species. Observations of visiting pollinators revealed no pollinator preference between the plant species. Although we demonstrated asymmetrical reproductive interference between V. cymbalaria and V. persica, its effect in the field seemed limited. An essential factor mitigating the adverse effect of reproductive interference might be a shortage of pollinators that could facilitate interspecific pollination. We predict that further invasion of V. cymbalaria into areas where V. persica prevails is unlikely, although swift displacement of V. cymbalaria by V. persica in areas where V. cymbalaria is already established is also unlikely.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown if central sensitization (CS)-related symptoms have an intermediate role that might explain how disability develops from pain after cervical spinal surgery. AIMS: The study aim was to investigate the role of CS-related symptoms in the relationship between pain and disability reported after cervical spinal surgery. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTINGS: Tertiary care spinal surgery center. PARTICIPANTS/SUBJECTS: The participants included individuals with a cervical degenerative condition who had undergone surgery. METHODS: The following patient-reported outcome measures were evaluated: (1) Numerical Rating Scale; (2) Neck Disability Index; and (3) Short Form of the Central Sensitization Inventory. A hypothesized model containing the CS-related symptoms and the relationships between pain and disability was constructed and tested by structural equation modeling. RESULTS: Questionnaires were mailed to 280 individuals, and responses were obtained from 145 participants. Of these respondents, 99 (68.3%) were males and 46 (31.7%) were females, with a mean age of 64.4 ± 12.3 years. The latent variable for pain, represented by the neck (coefficient: 0.856, p < .001) and upper limb pain (0.568, p < .001), influenced CS-related symptoms (coefficient: 0.504, p < .001). Pain directly affected disability (coefficient: 0.497, p < .001) and indirectly through CS-related symptoms. Bootstrap analysis confirmed this indirect effect (point estimate: 2.85, 95% confidence interval: 1.04 to 6.30, p = .04). CONCLUSIONS: The results revealed that neck and upper limb pain affected disabilities both directly and through CS-related symptoms. Future research should focus on the efficacy of biopsychosocial approaches for patients after cervical spine surgery with a high risk of disability due to CS-related symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Pain self-efficacy and gender may influence disability in patients with musculoskeletal disorders. The direct and interactive influence of pain self-efficacy and gender on postoperative disability with degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is unclear. AIM: This study aimed to determine the effects of age, pain, and pain self-efficacy on disability postoperatively in patients with DCM, and explore whether these effects differ by gender. METHOD: A total of 180 participants who underwent DCM surgery were consecutively recruited. The following were evaluated: (1) demographic/descriptive data (age, gender, diagnosis, surgery date, procedure); (2) numerical rating scale pain and dysesthesia intensity; (3) Neck Disability Index; and (4) Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis and simple slope analysis determined the effect of patients' biologic and psychosocial factors, and their interaction in terms of disability. RESULTS: The responses of 82 participants were analyzed. The hierarchical multiple regression final model analysis determined 57.1% participant disability variance; gender (B = 3.388; p < .01); pain (B = 3.574; p < .01); pain self-efficacy (B = -0.229; p < .01); age and gender (B = -0.201; p < .05); pain and gender (B = -3.749; p < .01); pain self-efficacy and gender (B = -0.304; p < .01) were significantly associated with disability. Simple slope test indicated that women showed weaker pain associations and stronger age and pain self-efficacy associations with disability than men. CONCLUSIONS: Pain self-efficacy improvement should be focused on after surgery in patients with DCM, especially women.

A new superionic Ag+ conductor with a nominal composition Ag17(CO3)3I11 (11AgI-3Ag2CO3) was found in the AgI-Ag2CO3 system. The conductor, which was formed at temperatures from 100 to 170 °C, is a metastable phase that gradually decomposes into AgI and Ag10(CO3)I4 over a period of a few weeks at room temperature (RT). A Ag+ ionic conductivity of 0.16 S/cm was measured at RT, and an activation energy of 0.33 eV was evaluated in the temperature range from -9 to 19 °C. Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed that Ag17(CO3)3I11 crystallized in a rhombohedral unit cell with hexagonal parameters of a = 15.8831(6) Å and c = 30.0730(13) Å at -183 °C and space group R3c. The Ag atoms were distributed over 53 sites in the asymmetry unit, with a maximum occupancy of 0.33(8). The continuous distribution of the partially occupied Ag sites was associated with the conduction paths of the Ag+ ions in the structure.

A super-multiview light-field display with horizontal and vertical parallax is realized by time-division and color multiplexing to deliver full-color images to each viewpoint. In the conventional study, an image of a different color is delivered to each viewpoint to induce focal accommodation. In the proposed method, we deliver images of different colors sequentially to generate a full-color image by an after-image effect. Though the number of time-divisions increases in the proposed method, perceived flicker is suppressed by showing different colors at different timings. We compare the observed images given by the proposed method with those given by the conventional method to find out that the former reproduces a natural blur effect when the image is defocused. We also confirm with a psychophysical experiment using a refractometer that the proposed method induces a stronger focal accommodation than other super-multiview methods with a smaller number of time-divisions or with a stronger flicker. The proposed optics is applicable to a near-eye display with a natural focal effect.

The introduction of arylethynyl moieties at the pyrrole α- and ß-positions of dipyrrolyldiketone BF2 complexes as anion-responsive π-electronic molecules was investigated. The arylethynyl-substituted derivatives formed a variety of anion complexes with planar [1+1]- and interlocked [2+1]-type structures in solution and in the solid state. The derivatives with long alkyl chains in the introduced arylethynyl groups also formed mesophases in the form of ion pairs of the anion complexes and a counter cation. The geometries of the constituent anion complexes affected the packing modes of the dimension-controlled assemblies.

A 64-year-old female presented to our hospital with a chronic cough. She was diagnosed with cStage ⅢA small cell lung cancer(cT2aN2M0, limited disease). On admission for chemoradiation therapy, laboratory data incidentally revealed liver dysfunction. Further examination resulted in the patient being diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis. Oral prednisolone therapy was started, and after the improvement of liver function tests, consecutive chemoradiation therapy with cisplatin and etoposide was administered. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a patient with autoimmune hepatitis and small cell lung cancer. Autoimmune hepatitis might arise as a paraneoplastic syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Mathematical models of diseases may provide a unified approach for establishing effective treatment strategies based on fundamental pathophysiology. However, models that are useful for clinical practice must overcome the massive complexity of human physiology and the diversity of patients' environmental conditions. With the aim of modeling a complex disease, we choose sepsis, which is highly complex, life-threatening systemic disease with high mortality. In particular, we focused on septic shock, a subset of sepsis in which underlying circulatory and cellular/metabolic abnormalities are profound enough to substantially increase mortality. Our model includes cardiovascular, immune, nervous system models and a pharmacological model as submodels and integrates them to create a sepsis model based on pathological facts. RESULTS: Model validation was done in two steps. First, we established a model for a standard patient in order to confirm the validity of our approach in general aspects. For this, we checked the correspondence between the severity of infection defined in terms of pathogen growth rate and the ease of recovery defined in terms of the intensity of treatment required for recovery. The simulations for a standard patient showed good correspondence. We then applied the same simulations to a patient with heart failure as an underlying disease. The model showed that spontaneous recovery would not occur without treatment, even for a very mild infection. This is consistent with clinical experience. We next validated the model using clinical data of three sepsis patients. The model parameters were tuned for these patients based on the model for the standard patient used in the first part of the validation. In these cases, the simulations agreed well with clinical data. In fact, only a handful parameters need to be tuned for the simulations to match with the data. CONCLUSIONS: We have constructed a model of septic shock and have shown that it can reproduce well the time courses of treatment and disease progression. Tuning of model parameters for each patient could be easily done. This study demonstrates the feasibility of disease models, suggesting the possibility of clinical use in the prediction of disease progression, decisions on the timing of drug dosages, and the estimation of time of infection.

Pulmonary enteric adenocarcinoma is a unique pulmonary adenocarcinoma subtype and has histopathological findings that are similar to those of colorectal adenocarcinoma. A man in his 50s visited our hospital because of discomfort in his right lower leg for the last 9 months. Imaging studies revealed a mass in his right soleus muscle, and needle biopsy was performed. Histological findings revealed adenocarcinoma, and immunohistochemical staining showed that the tumor cells were positive for CK20 and CDX-2. The tumor was first suspected to be metastasis of gastrointestinal malignant tumors. FDG-PET/CT showed increased FDG uptake in the right soleus muscle mass and presented with increased FDG uptake in a right upper lobe mass and right mediastinum lymphadenopathy. There were no findings in other organs. Scraping cytology of a transbronchial biopsy indicated adenocarcinoma. Upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy showed no findings of malignancy. He was finally diagnosed with pulmonary enteric adenocarcinoma(cT3N2M1b, Stage ⅣA). Treatment with cisplatin(CDDP), pemetrexed( PEM), and bevacizumab(BEV) was initiated. After 4 courses of the regimen, the tumor was partially reduced, and the patient showed stable disease(SD).

The first copper(I)-catalyzed enantioselective borylation of racemic benzyl chlorides has been realized by a quadrant-by-quadrant structure modulation of QuinoxP*-type bisphosphine ligands. This reaction converts racemic mixtures of secondary benzyl chlorides into the corresponding chiral benzylboronates with high enantioselectivity (up to 92 % ee). The results of mechanistic studies suggest the formation of a benzylic radical intermediate. The results of DFT calculations indicate that the optimal bisphosphine-copper(I) catalyst engages in noncovalent interactions that efficiently recognize the radical intermediate, and leads to high levels of enantioselectivity.

A man in his 60's with interstitial pneumonitis who was previously admitted to another hospital was transferred to our hospital for further investigations 6 years prior to an acute exacerbation. Given his history of avian contact, the presence of antibodies specific to avian antigen, and a positive result of the inhalation provocation test using pigeon dropping extracts, he was diagnosed with bird-related hypersensitivity pneumonitis (BRHP). As such, we instructed the patient to avoid exposure to avian antigen, and regularly measured the level of avian antigen in dust samples collected from his household environment. Despite avoiding the stimulus, corticosteroids and immunosuppressants were needed in view of progression of dyspnea after approximately five to six years. Four months after immunosuppressant therapy began, the patient suffered an acute exacerbation of BRHP and died. At this time, we found that the level of avian antigen was much higher than baseline. We suggest that exposure to high level of avian antigen is one cause of an acute exacerbation of BRHP.

HBP23, a 23-kDa heme-binding protein identified in rats, is a member of the peroxiredoxin (Prx) family, the primary peroxidases involved in hydrogen peroxide catabolism. Although HBP23 has a characteristic Cys-Pro heme-binding motif, the significance of heme binding to Prx family proteins remains to be elucidated. Here, we examined the effect of heme binding to human peroxiredoxin-1 (PRX1), which has 97% amino acid identity to HBP23. PRX1 was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to homogeneity. Spectroscopic titration demonstrated that PRX1 binds heme with a 1:1 stoichiometry and a dissociation constant of 0.17 µM. UV-vis spectra of heme-PRX1 suggested that Cys52 is the axial ligand of ferric heme. PRX1 peroxidase activity was lost upon heme binding, reflecting the fact that Cys52 is not only the heme-binding site but also the active center of peroxidase activity. Interestingly, heme binding to PRX1 caused a decrease in the toxicity and degradation of heme, significantly suppressing H2O2-dependent heme peroxidase activity and degradation of PRX1-bound heme compared with that of free hemin. By virtue of its cytosolic abundance (∼20 µM), PRX1 thus functions as a scavenger of cytosolic hemin (<1 µM). Collectively, our results indicate that PRX1 has a dual role; Cys-dependent peroxidase activity and cytosolic heme scavenger.

Paradoxical low-flow, low-gradient aortic stenosis (LFLG AS) is recognized as a subtype of aortic stenosis. A small left ventricular (LV) cavity with marked LV concentric remodeling leads to a reduced stroke volume in this condition. The case is reported of a paradoxical LFLG AS patient who was undergoing treatment for pulmonary hypertension (PH) and interstitial pneumonia associated with scleroderma. Echocardiography demonstrated enlargement of the right ventricle and a diminished LV cavity. Moreover, the aortic valve opening was restricted despite a preserved LV ejection fraction (61%). The patient's aortic valve area (obtained with the continuity equation) was 0.57 cm2 (indexed AVA was 0.39 cm2/m2), and the mean gradient was 16 mmHg. Multi-detector computed tomography findings confirmed that the aortic valve calcification was not severe. The main mechanism responsible for LFLG AS was considered to be a reduced LV cavity secondary to PH, rather than a sclerotic aortic valve. Thus, a decision was taken to treat the patient with additional medical management prior to performing any invasive procedures. It should be borne in mind that PH can lead to paradoxical LFLG AS, and that appropriate treatment should be contemplated depending on the underlying mechanisms. Small-residue-mediated interhelical packings are ubiquitously found in helical membrane proteins, although their interaction dynamics and lipid dependence remain mostly uncharacterized. We used a single-pair FRET technique to examine the effect of a GXXXG motif on the association of de novo designed (AALALAA)3 helices in liposomes. Dimerization occurred with sub-second lifetimes, which was abolished by cholesterol. Utilizing the nearly instantaneous time-resolution of 2D IR spectroscopy, parallel and antiparallel helix associations were identified by vibrational couplings across helices at their interface. Taken together, the data illustrate that the GXXXG motif controls helix packing but still allows for a dynamic and lipid-regulated oligomeric state.

Lignin-carbohydrates, one of the major cell wall components, are believed to be the structures that form chemical linkage between lignin and cell wall polysaccharides. Due to the molecular complexity of lignin-containing substances, their isolation and the assignment of their biological activities have so far remained a difficult task. Here, we extracted two lignin-containing carbohydrates, lignin-rich enzyme lignin (LREL) and pure enzyme lignin (PEL), from barley husk and demonstrated that they act as immune stimulators of dendritic cells (DCs), which are particularly important in linking innate and adaptive immunity. Thioacidolysis, acid hydrolysis, and mild alkali hydrolysis of both LREL and PEL revealed that their immunostimulatory activities depended on the lignin structure and/or content, neutral sugar content (especially the characteristic distribution of galactose and mannose), and presence of an ester bond. Furthermore, we showed that the immunostimulatory potency of the lignin-carbohydrate depended on its molecular weight and degree of polymerization. We also demonstrated that the LREL-induced activation of DCs was mediated via TLR4. Thus, LREL-induced increases in the expression levels of several cell surface marker proteins, production of inflammatory cytokines IL-12p40 and TNF-α, and activation and nuclear translocation of transcription factors, as was observed in the WT DCs, were completely abrogated in DCs derived from the TLR4(-/-) mice but not in DCs derived from the TLR2(-/-), TLR7(-/-), and TLR9(-/-) mice. We further demonstrated that LRELs isolated from other plant tissues also activated DCs. These immunostimulatory activities of lignin-carbohydrates, extracted from edible plant tissues, could have potential relevance in anti-infectious immunity and vaccine adjuvants.

We have developed a novel approach for the synthesis of enantioenriched 3-boryl-tetrahydropyridines via the Cu(I)-catalyzed regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselective protoborylation of 1,2-dihydropyridines, which were obtained by the partial reduction of the pyridine derivatives. This dearomatization/enantioselective borylation stepwise strategy provides facile access to chiral piperidines together with the stereospecific transformation of a stereogenic C-B bond from readily available starting materials. Furthermore, the utility of this method is demonstrated for the concise synthesis of the antidepressant drug (-)-paroxetine. A theoretical study of the reaction mechanism is also described.

Water samples from Vietnam, The Philippines, and Myanmar were analyzed for artificial sweeteners (ASs) and iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICMs). High concentrations (low micrograms per liter) of ASs, including aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose, were found in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) influents from Vietnam. Three ICMs, iohexol, iopamidol, and iopromide were detected in Vietnamese WWTP influents and effluents, suggesting that these ICMs are frequently used in Vietnam. ASs and ICMs were found in river water from downtown Hanoi at concentrations comparable to or lower than the concentrations in WWTP influents. The ASs and ICMs concentrations in WWTP influents and adjacent surface water significantly correlated (r (2) = 0.99, p < 0.001), suggesting that household wastewater is discharged directly into rivers in Vietnam. Acesulfame was frequently detected in northern Vietnamese groundwater, but the concentrations varied spatially by one order of magnitude even though the sampling points were very close together. This implies that poorly performing domestic septic tanks sporadically leak household wastewater into groundwater. High acesulfame, cyclamate, saccharin, and sucralose concentrations were found in surface water from Manila, The Philippines. The sucralose concentrations were one order of magnitude higher in the Manila samples than in the Vietnamese samples, indicating that more sucralose is used in The Philippines than in Vietnam. Acesulfame and cyclamate were found in surface water from Pathein (rural) and Yangon (urban) in Myanmar, but no ICMs were found in the samples. The ASs concentrations were two-three orders of magnitude lower in the samples from Myanmar than in the samples from Vietnam and The Philippines, suggesting that different amounts of ASs are used in these countries. We believe this is the first report of persistent ASs and ICMs having ubiquitous distributions in economically emerging South Asian countries.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and neck pain, kinesiophobia, and modalities of physical activity in individuals with postoperative degenerative cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy (DCM/R) because postoperative pain after cervical spine surgery is likely to persist, causing kinesiophobia and avoidance of physical activity. METHODS: A questionnaire was distributed to 280 individuals with DCM/R. The questionnaire comprised the following four items: HRQOL (EuroQol 5-dimensions 5-level), neck pain (numerical rating scale [NRS]), kinesiophobia (11-item Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia [TSK-11]), and physical activity (paid work, light exercise, walking, strength training, and gardening). Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed using the NRS, TSK-11, and physical activity as independent variables. RESULTS: In total, 126 individuals provided analyzable responses (45.0%). After including the NRS score as an independent variable to the multiple regression equation for participants' background, the independent rate of the regression equation significantly improved by only 4.1% (R2=0.153). The addition of the TSK-11 score significantly improved this effect by 11.1% (R2=0.264). Finally, the addition of physical activity also significantly improved the explanatory rate by 9.9% (R2=0.363). CONCLUSION: Neck pain, kinesiophobia, and physical activity (specifically paid work and walking) were independently associated with HRQOL in individuals with postoperative DCM/R.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data on physical activity and its effects in patients after cervical spine surgery. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association between physical activity and disability in patients after cervical spine surgery while also considering age, sex, pain, and central sensitization (CS)-related symptoms. METHODS: Participants included individuals with a cervical degenerative condition who had undergone surgery. Neck disability index, physical activity frequency, numerical rating scale for pain intensity, and short form of the CS inventory were recorded more than 1 year postoperatively. The linear mixed model was performed to examine the association between physical activity and disability. RESULTS: The responses of 145 participants were analyzed. The linear mixed model results showed that the stretching and light-intensity exercise frequency (ß=-0.14, p= 0.039) was independently associated with disability, adjusted for age, sex, pain, and CS-related symptoms. Conversely, other physical activities, such as walking and muscle strength exercises, were not associated with a disability. CONCLUSION: The findings emphasize the importance of performing regular physical activity, regardless of pain and CS-related symptoms.

Although various benefits of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) have been reported, such as promoting Bifidobacterium growth in the infant gut, their effects on adults have not been fully studied. This study investigated the effects of two types of sialyllactose, 3'-sialyllactose (3'-SL) and 6'-sialyllactose (6'-SL), on the adult intestinal microbiome using the simulator of human intestinal microbial ecosystem (SHIME®), which can simulate human gastrointestinal conditions. HPLC metabolite analysis showed that sialyllactose (SL) supplementation increased the short-chain fatty acid content of SHIME culture broth. Moreover, 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis revealed that SL promoted the growth of Phascolarctobacterium and Lachnospiraceae, short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria, but not the growth of Bifidobacterium. Altogether, both types of SL stimulated an increase in short-chain fatty acids, including propionate and butyrate. Additionally, SHIME culture supernatant supplemented with SL improved the intestinal barrier function in Caco-2 cell monolayers. These results suggest that SL could act as a unique prebiotic among other HMOs with a nonbifidogenic effect, resulting in intestinal barrier protection.
