RESUMO

Hydrogels are commonly used as wound dressings to help maintain a moist environment around the wound and isolate contaminants, thus promoting healing. For irregular wounds, the slow healing process and even infection may occur due to the inability of dressings to adhere well to the wound. Prussian blue (PB) is a metal-organic framework (MOF) material with excellent photothermal conversion and superior stability. In this paper, a kind of near-infrared (NIR) light triggered in-situ polymerized antimicrobial hydrogel was prepared. The free radical initiator was encapsulated in the hollow PB by a phase change material (PCM) to maintain stability. The raised temperature triggered by NIR induced the release and decomposition of the initiator. The matrix was formed by the cross-linking of double bonds on modified chitosan. The quaternary amine groups of modified chitosan and the photothermal properties of PB enhanced the antimicrobial properties of the hydrogel. High-quality wound healing was demonstrated in the whole skin defect model. This study provides a new reference for the preparation of in-situ polymerized hydrogel dressings for irregular wounds.

RESUMO

Stripe rust is a devastating disease of wheat worldwide. Chinese wheat cultivar Lanhangxuan 121 (LHX121), selected from an advanced line L92-47 population that had been subjected to space mutation breeding displayed a consistently higher level of resistance to stipe rust than its parent in multiple field environments. The aim of this research was to establish the number and types of resistance genes in parental lines L92-47 and LHX121 using separate segregating populations. The first population developed from a cross between LHX121 and susceptible cultivar Xinong 822 comprised 278 F2:3 lines. The second validation population comprised 301 F2:3 lines from a cross between L92-47 and susceptible cultivar Xinong 979. Lines of two population were evaluated for stripe rust response at three sites during the 2018-2020 cropping season. Affymetrix 660 K SNP arrays were used to genotype the lines and parents. Inclusive composite interval mapping detected QTL QYrLHX.nwafu-2BS, QYrLHX.nwafu-3BS, and QYrLHX.nwafu-5BS for resistance in all three environments. Based on previous studies and pedigree information, QYrLHX.nwafu-2BS and QYrLHX.nwafu-3BS were likely to be Yr27 and Yr30 that are present in the L92-47 parent. QYrLHX.nwafu-5BS (YrL121) detected only in LHX121 was mapped to a 7.60 cM interval and explained 10.67-22.57% of the phenotypic variation. Compared to stripe rust resistance genes previously mapped to chromosome 5B, YrL121 might be a new adult plant resistance QTL. Furthermore, there were a number of variations signals using 35 K SNP array and differentially expressed genes using RNA-seq between L92-47 and LHX121 in the YrL121 region, indicating that they probably impair the presence and/or function of YrL121. RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: To date, few studies have investigated the association between dietary manganese intake and the risk of hypertension, so the prospective relationship of dietary manganese intake and new-onset hypertension remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the association between dietary manganese intake and the risk of new-onset hypertension in the general Chinese population. METHODS AND RESULTS: This prospective cohort study included 12,177 participants who were free of hypertension at baseline from China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). Dietary intake was measured by 3 consecutive 24-h dietary recalls combined with a household food inventory. The study outcome was new-onset hypertension, defined as systolic blood pressure ≥140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mm Hg or diagnosed by a physician or under antihypertensive treatment during the follow-up. During a median follow-up duration of 6.1 years, 4269 (44.9 per 1000 person-years) participants developed new-onset hypertension. Overall, there was a positive association between dietary manganese intake and new-onset hypertension. The adjusted HRs (95%CIs) of new-onset hypertension were 1.00 (reference), 0.97 (0.87, 1.08), 1.24 (1.10, 1.39) and 1.75 (1.52, 2.01) across the quartiles of dietary manganese intake, respectively. Accordingly, a significantly higher risk of new-onset hypertension (HR, 1.38; 95%CI: 1.27, 1.50) was found in participants in quartiles 3-4 of dietary manganese intake (≥6.0 mg/day), compared with those in quartiles 1-2 (<6.0 mg/day). CONCLUSIONS: In the general Chinese population, dietary manganese intake was positively associated with the risk of new hypertension, independent of sodium intake and other important covariates.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The association between different sedentary behaviors and hypertension risk remains unclear. We aimed to explore the relationship between different domains of sedentary behaviors and new-onset hypertension, investigate whether genetic susceptibility to hypertension modifies the relationship, and examine the extent to which the relationship is mediated by body mass index (BMI) and grip strength. METHODS: 212 714 participants without baseline hypertension in the UK Biobank were enrolled. The three major sedentary behaviors (TV-watching, nonoccupational computer use, and driving) were measured using touch screen questionnaires. The primary outcome was new-onset hypertension. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 11.9 years, 13 983 participants developed hypertension. There was a linear positive association between TV-watching time and new-onset hypertension (p for nonlinearity =0.868). A J-shaped association was found for nonoccupational computer use time and driving time with new-onset hypertension, with an inflection point of 0.5 h/day for both (both p for nonlinearity <0.001). Polygenetic risk scores for hypertension (based on 118 related single-nucleotide polymorphisms) did not significantly modify these associations (all p-interactions >0.05). Furthermore, the detrimental effects of long-term sedentary behaviors on hypertension were mediated by BMI by 21%-30%, and the beneficial effects of limited sitting time (within 0.5 h/day) for driving and nonoccupational computer use were mediated by grip strength by 6-25%. CONCLUSIONS: There was a positive association for hands-independence sedentary behavior (TV-watching), and a J-shaped association for hands-dependence sedentary behaviors (nonoccupational computer use and driving) with new-onset hypertension, regardless of genetic risks of hypertension. These relationships were partly mediated by BMI and grip strength.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The relations of the variety and quantity of different sources of dietary insoluble fibers and hypertension remain uncertain. We aimed to investigate the associations between the variety and quantity of insoluble fibers intake from six major food sources and new-onset hypertension, using data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). METHODS: Twelve thousand one hundred thirty-one participants without hypertension at baseline from CHNS were included. Dietary intake was measured by three consecutive 24-h dietary recalls combined with a household food inventory. The variety score of insoluble fiber sources was defined as the number of insoluble fiber sources consumed at the appropriate level, accounting for both types and quantities of insoluble fibers. The study outcome was new-onset hypertension, defined as blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mmHg, or physician-diagnosed hypertension or receiving antihypertensive treatments during the follow-up. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 6.1 years, 4252 participants developed hypertension. There were L-shaped associations of dietary insoluble fibers derived from vegetables, beans, tubers, and fruits with new-onset hypertension; a reversed J-shaped association of whole grain-derived insoluble fiber with new-onset hypertension; and no obvious association of refined grain-derived insoluble fiber with new-onset hypertension. Therefore, refined grain was not included in the insoluble fiber variety score calculation. More importantly, a higher insoluble fiber variety score was significantly associated with lower risks of new-onset hypertension (per score increment, hazard ratio, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.45-0.55). CONCLUSIONS: There was an inverse association between the variety of insoluble fibers with appropriate quantity from different food sources and new-onset hypertension.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The association between dietary phosphorus intake and the risk of hypertension remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the relation of dietary phosphorus intake with new-onset hypertension among Chinese adults. METHODS: A total of 12,177 participants who were free of hypertension at baseline from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) were included. Dietary intake was measured by 3 consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls combined with a household food inventory. New-onset hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure ≥140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mm Hg or diagnosed by a physician or under antihypertensive treatment during the follow-up. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 6.1 years, 4,269 participants developed new-onset hypertension. Overall, the association between dietary phosphorus intake and new-onset hypertension followed a U-shape (P for nonlinearity<.001). Consistently, when dietary phosphorus intake was assessed as quintiles, compared with those in the 3rd to 4th quintiles (912.0-<1089.5 mg/d), a significantly higher risk of new-onset hypertension was found in participants in the 1st to 2nd quintiles (<912.0 mg/d: HR, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.14-1.33), and the fifth quintile (≥1089.5 mg/d: HR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.10-1.33). CONCLUSION: There was a U-shaped association between dietary phosphorus intake and new-onset hypertension in general Chinese adults.

RESUMO

AIM: The association between serum uric acid (SUA) and mortality from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) participants remains uncertain. We aim to investigate the relations of SUA with the risk of CVD mortality among adults with and without NAFLD. METHODS: Using data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2014, a total of 17,858 participants were recruited. Of these, 5767 had a US Fatty Liver Index (USFLI) ≥30 and were classified as having NAFLD. Death information was obtained from the National Death Index until 2015. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 8.3 years, 427 participants died from CVD. Overall, there was a positive association between SUA and CVD mortality among participants with NAFLD (per SD µmol/L increment, adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 1.40; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.16-1.68). Accordingly, among those with NAFLD, when SUA was assessed as quartiles, compared with those in the first quartile, a significantly higher risk of CVD mortality was found in participants in the fourth quartile (adjusted HR, 2.69; 95% CI, 1.51-4.80). However, there was no significant association between SUA and CVD mortality among participants without NAFLD (per SD µmol/L increment, adjusted HR, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.83-1.22). Similar trends were found for all-cause mortality. Similar results were also found when using FLI ≥ 60 to define NAFLD. CONCLUSIONS: In a large and nationally representative sample of US adults, a higher SUA was significantly associated with a higher risk of CVD mortality among participants with NAFLD, but not in those without NAFLD.

RESUMO

AIMS: Visceral adiposity index (VAI) was a reliable marker for visceral adiposity accumulation and dysfunction. The association between VAI and nephropathy outcomes remains uncertain in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). We aimed to evaluate the longitudinal relationships between VAI and incident nephropathy outcomes in T2DM patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten thousand one hundred and thirty two participants with T2DM from the ACCORD trial were included in the present study. Cumulative average VAI based on VAI measurements at baseline and follow-up was used to represent long-term VAI status. The primary outcome was the incident composite nephropathy outcome defined as: (1) serum creatinine doubling or >20 ml/min decrease in eGFR; or (2) development of macro-albuminuria; or (3) renal failure or end stage kidney disease (dialysis) or serum creatinine >3.3 mg/dl. RESULTS: During 26,168 person-years follow-up duration, 6094 (60.1%) participants developed the incident composite nephropathy outcome. When assessing cumulative average VAI as quartiles, compared with those in the 1-2 quartiles (<2.6), a significantly higher risk of incident composite nephropathy outcomes was observed among participants in the 3-4 quartiles (≥2.6, adjusted HR: 1.09, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.18). Moreover, the positive association was consistent in participants with or without single abnormal VAI components, including general obesity, abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or with different numbers of abnormal VAI components. Additionally, the positive association was stronger in participants with cumulative average systolic blood pressure <130 mmHg (vs. ≥130 mmHg; p-interaction < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In T2DM patients, higher cumulative average VAI was associated with a higher risk of incident composite nephropathy outcomes. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The prospective associations of serum 25(OH)D, sun exposure time, and dietary vitamin D with risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) are unclear. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the relations of serum 25(OH)D, sun exposure time, and dietary vitamin D intake with new-onset AKI and examine whether genetic susceptibility modified such associations. METHODS: A total of 413,169 participants (mean age was 56.4 y, 47.2% were male) from UK Biobank without prior AKI were included. Sun exposure time was expressed as time spent outdoors. Genetic risk scores were calculated by 263 single nucleotide polymorphisms, which showed significant associations with the estimated glomerular filtration rate. The primary outcome was new-onset AKI. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the HRs and (95% CIs). RESULTS: During a median follow-up duration of 12 y, 16,938 (4.1%) participates developed new-onset AKI. Compared with those with serum 25(OH)D <25 nmol/L, significantly lower risks of new-onset AKI were found between participants with 25(OH)D 25 to <50 nmol/L (adjusted HR: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.73, 0.80), and ≥50 nmol/L (adjusted HR: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.65, 0.72). Moreover, in summer, participants who spent ≥4 h outdoors per day (tertile 3) had a significantly lower risk of new-onset AKI (adjusted HR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.86, 0.95) than those who spent <2 h outdoors per day (tertile 1). Similar results were found for time spent outdoors in winter. In addition, those in quintile 5 of dietary vitamin D intake showed a lower risk of new-onset AKI (≥4.2 µg/d, adjusted HR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.82, 0.98) than those in quintile 1 (<1.0 µg/d). Genetic risks of kidney diseases did not significantly modify all the 3 above associations (all P-interactions >0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Serum 25(OH)D concentrations, time spent outdoors, and dietary vitamin D intake were all inversely associated with new-onset AKI, independent of genetic risks for kidney diseases.

RESUMO

Syneresis, the compaction of a material accompanied by fluid expulsion, is a typical mechanical instability which exists among colloidal gel based materials and that negatively affects the quality of relevant applications. We shed light onto the internal dynamics of model colloidal gels undergoing syneresis using Laser Speckle Imaging (LSI). The resulting dynamical maps capture the distinct differences in spatial and temporal relaxation patterns between colloidal gels comprising solid and liquid particles. This indicates different mechanisms of syneresis between the two systems and highlights the importance of the constituent particles and their mobile or restrictive interfaces in the mechanical relaxation of the colloidal gels during syneresis.

RESUMO

The association between dietary Cu intake and mortality risk remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the relationship of dietary Cu intake with all-cause mortality among Chinese adults. A total of 17 310 participants from the China Health and Nutrition Survey, a national ongoing open cohort of Chinese participants, were included in the analysis. Dietary intake was measured by three consecutive 24-h dietary recalls in combination with a weighing inventory over the same 3 d. The average intakes of the 3-d dietary macronutrients and micronutrients were calculated. The study outcome was all-cause mortality. During a median follow-up of 9·0 years, 1324 (7·6 %) participants died. After adjusting for sex, age, BMI, ever alcohol drinking, ever smoking, education levels, occupations, urban or rural residents, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and the intakes of fat, protein and carbohydrate, the association between dietary Cu intake and all-cause mortality followed a J-shape (Pfor nonlinearity = 0·047). When dietary Cu intake was assessed as quartiles, compared with those in the first quartile (<1·60 mg/d), the adjusted hazard ratios for all-cause mortality were 0·87 (95 % CI (0·71, 1·07)), 0·98 (95 % CI (0·79, 1·21)) and 1·49 (95 % CI (1·19, 1·86)), respectively, in participants in the second (1·60-<1·83 mg/d), third (1·83-<2·09 mg/d) and fourth (≥2·09 mg/d) quartiles. A series of subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses showed similar results. Overall, our findings emphasised the importance of maintaining optimal dietary Cu intake levels for prevention of premature death.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The association between dietary phosphorus intake and the risk of diabetes remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the relation of dietary phosphorus intake with new-onset diabetes among Chinese adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 16,272 participants who were free of diabetes at baseline from the China Health and Nutrition Survey were included. Dietary intake was measured by 3 consecutive 24-h dietary recalls combined with a household food inventory. Participants with self-reported physician-diagnosed diabetes, or fasting glucose ≥7.0 mmol/L or glycated hemoglobin ≥6.5% during the follow-up were defined as having new-onset diabetes. During a median follow-up of 9.0years, 1101 participants developed new-onset diabetes. Overall, the association between dietary phosphorus intake with new-onset diabetes followed a U-shape (P for nonlinearity<0.001). The risk of new-onset diabetes significantly decreased with the increment of dietary phosphorus intake (per SD increment: HR, 0.64; 95%CI, 0.48-0.84) in participants with phosphorus intake <921.6 mg/day, and increased with the increment of dietary phosphorus intake (per SD increment: HR, 1.33; 95%CI, 1.16-1.53) in participants with phosphorus intake ≥921.6 mg/day. Consistently, when dietary phosphorus intake was assessed as quintiles, compared with those in the 3rd quintile (905.0-<975.4 mg/day), significantly higher risks of new-onset diabetes were found in participants in the 1st-2nd quintiles (<905.0 mg/day: HR, 1.59; 95%CI, 1.30-1.94), and 4th-5th quintiles (≥975.4 mg/day: HR, 1.46; 95%CI, 1.19-1.78). CONCLUSIONS: There was a U-shaped association between dietary phosphorus intake and new-onset diabetes in general Chinese adults, with an inflection point at 921.6 mg/day and a minimal risk at 905.0-975.4 mg/day of dietary phosphorus intake.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to investigate the relations of handgrip strength, walking pace and the combination of handgrip strength and walking pace with incident hypertension, and to explore whether this association was modified by the genetic risk of hypertension. METHODS: 214 214 participants without prior hypertension in the UK Biobank were included. Handgrip strength was assessed by dynamometer. Walking pace was self-defined as slow, average, or brisk. The study outcome was incident hypertension. A genetic risk score for hypertension was generated using a Bayesian approach applied to meta-analyzed summary statistics GWAS data. RESULTS: Over a median follow-up of 11.9 years, 13 344 (6.2%) participants developed incident hypertension. When handgrip strength was assessed as sex-specific quartiles, compared with those with the lowest handgrip strength (quartile 1), the adjusted HRs (95% CI) of incident hypertension in quartile 2, quartile 3, and quartile 4 were 0.80 (0.69, 0.93), 0.74 (0.64, 0.86), and 0.72 (0.61, 0.84), respectively. Compared with those with slow walking pace, participants with average (HR, 0.52; 95% CI: 0.40, 0.67) or brisk (HR, 0.43; 95% CI: 0.32, 0.56) walking pace had significantly lower risks of hypertension. Moreover, compared with those with both lower handgrip strength (quartile 1) and slow walking pace, the lowest risk of incident hypertension was observed in participants with both high handgrip strength (quartiles 2-4) and fast (average or brisk) walking pace (HR, 0.36; 95% CI: 0.25, 0.52). Genetic risks of hypertension did not significantly modify the association (p-interaction = 0.300). CONCLUSION: Both higher handgrip strength and faster walking pace were significantly associated with a lower risk of incident hypertension, independent of genetic risks of hypertension.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The relationship of air pollutants and residential exposure to greenspace with severe liver disease remains inconclusive. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to assess the relationship of joint exposure to air pollutants, residential exposure to greenspaces with new-onset severe liver disease. METHODS: We included 427,697 participants without prior liver diseases from UK Biobank. A weighted air pollution score was calculated based on PM2.5, PM10, PM2.5-10, NO2, and NOX. The percentage of land coverage by residential greenspaces was estimated using land use data. The primary outcome was new-onset severe liver disease, defined as a composite outcome including hospitalization or death due to compensated or decompensated liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 12.0 years, 4572 participants developed severe liver disease. A higher air pollution score was significantly associated with an increased risk of new-onset severe liver disease (per SD increment; adjusted hazard ratio [HR],1.07; 95% confidence interval [CI],1.04-1.10). Moreover, residential greenspace coverage was inversely associated with new-onset severe liver disease (per SD increment; adjusted HR, 0.95; 95% CI,0.92-0.98). Genetic risks of liver cirrhosis did not significantly modify the associations (both P-interactions >0.05). However, we observed a stronger positive association between air pollution scores and new-onset severe liver disease in individuals with higher fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) scores, lower residential greenspaces, hypertension, and smokers (all P-interactions <0.05). Similarly, a more pronounced inverse association between residential exposure to greenspaces and new-onset severe liver disease was found in smokers and individuals with higher FIB-4 scores (both P-interactions<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest a positive association between air pollution scores and the risk of new-onset severe liver disease, while residential greenspaces show an inverse association. These results underscore the importance of maintaining high exposure to green space and reducing air pollution to prevent serious liver disease.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The relation of serum cystatin C with new-onset cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the prospective associations of serum cystatin C and its change with new-onset CVD in Chinese general population. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 7064 participants free of CVD at baseline were enrolled from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The change in serum cystatin C was calculated as cystatin C concentration at 2015 wave minus that at baseline (2011 wave). The primary outcome was new-onset CVD, defined as self-reported physician-diagnosed heart disease, stroke, or both during follow-up. The secondary outcomes were new-onset heart disease, and new-onset stroke. During a median follow-up duration of 7.0 years, a total of 1116 (15.8%) subjects developed new-onset CVD. Overall, after the adjustments for eGFR and other important covariates, there was a positive association between serum cystatin C and new-onset CVD (per SD mg/L increment; adjusted HR, 1.13; 95%CI: 1.08,1.18). When cystatin C was assessed as quintiles, the adjusted HRs for participants in the second, third, fourth and fifth quintiles were 1.15 (95%CI: 0.93, 1.41), 1.37 (95%CI: 1.11, 1.68), 1.47 (95%CI: 1.19, 1.81), and 2.03 (95%CI: 1.60, 2.56), respectively, compared with those in quintile 1 (P for trend<0.001). Furthermore, there was a positive association between the increase in cystatin C concentration and the subsequent new-onset CVD (per SD mg/L increment; adjusted HR, 1.14; 95%CI: 1.02,1.27). CONCLUSION: Both serum cystatin C and its increase were positively associated with new-onset CVD among Chinese general population.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The association between serum advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) and mortality risk remains equivocal. We aimed to assess the correlation of serum AOPP levels with the risk of all-cause mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. METHODS: A total of 1394 maintenance HD patients with complete data on AOPP and related parameters were included from China Collaborative Study on Dialysis (CCSD), a multi-center, prospective cohort study. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality, the secondary outcome was cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. RESULTS: During a median follow-up duration of 5.2 years (IQR, 2.1-5.4), all-cause mortality occurred in 492 (31.4%) participants. Overall, there was a reversed L-shaped association between serum AOPP and all-cause mortality in HD patients (P for nonlinearity = 0.04), with an inflection point at 87 µmol/L. Accordingly, there was no significant association between serum AOPP and all-cause mortality (per SD increment; HR, 0.94; 95%CI, 0.84, 1.05) in participants with AOPP < 87 µmol/L. However, there was a positive relationship of serum AOPP and all-cause mortality (per SD increment; HR, 1.24; 95%CI, 1.08, 1.42) in those with AOPP ≥ 87 µmol/L. Moreover, a similar trend was found for CVD mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Elevated serum AOPP levels were associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality in Chinese maintenance HD patients.

RESUMO

Afforestation has been proven to have enormous potential for carbon (C) sequestration; however, the dynamics of aggregate-associated organic carbon (OC) following afforestation and their contribution to changes in bulk soil OC are not well understood in regions with serious soil erosion. Therefore, we investigated the dynamics of OC associated with aggregates along a Robinia pseudoacacia (RP) afforestation chronosequence in the Loess Plateau. Soil aggregate size distribution and OC dynamics in bulk soil were analyzed 10, 18, 28, and 42 years after RP afforestation at depths of 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm. Results showed that total macroaggregates (>0.25 mm), mean weight diameter, and geometric mean diameter increased significantly with stand age, after 42 years of afforestation, increased by 433.5%, 437.2%, 302.1% in the 0-20 cm depth, respectively, while microaggregate amounts decreased by 52.9%, and the proportions of silt + clay fraction showed no obvious changes. Long-term afforestation increased OC content and stock, both in bulk soil (245.6% and 222.9% in the 0-20 cm depth, respectively) and soil aggregates. The improvement of soil structure and enrichment of OC stocks were greater at the 0-20 cm depth than the 20-40 cm depth. In addition, small macroaggregates (2-0.25 mm) contained the highest OC content and microaggregates (<0.025 mm) had the highest OC stocks regardless of soil depth and stand age. Across the afforestation chronosequence, OC content and stock in bulk soil positively correlated with large macroaggregate (>2 mm) amounts and small macroaggregate (2-0.25 mm) associated OC dynamics (P < 0.01). These results indicated that changes in bulk soil OC dynamics mainly depend on changes in the proportion of large macroaggregates and in the OC dynamics associated with small macroaggregates after RP afforestation.

RESUMO

Low-fat food products often contain natural, edible polymers to retain the desired mouth feel and elasticity of their full-fat counterparts. This type of product, however, can suffer from syneresis: densification due to the expulsion of fluid. Gaining insight into the physical principles governing syneresis in such soft hybrid dispersions remains a challenge from a theoretical perspective, as experimental data are needed to establish a basis. We record non-accelerated syneresis in a model system for low-fat mayonnaise: a colloid polymer mixture, consisting of oil in water emulsion with starch in the aqueous phase. We find the flow rate of expelled fluid to be proportional to the difference in hydrostatic pressure over the system. The osmotic pressure of the added starch, while being higher than the hydrostatic pressure, does not prevent syneresis because the soluble starch is lost to the expelled fluid. From these findings, we conclude that forced syneresis in these systems can be described as a gravity-driven porous flow through the densely packed emulsion, explainable with a model based on Darcy's law.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The association between mobile phone use and incident cancers remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the relationships of mobile phone use with incident overall and 25 site-specific cancers in men and women. METHODS: A total of 431,861 participants ages 38 to 73 years without prior cancers were included from the UK Biobank. Of these, 46.7% were male. Participants who used a mobile phone at least once per week to make or receive calls were defined as mobile phone users. The study outcomes were incident overall and 25 site-specific cancers. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 10.7 years, 35,401 (17.5%) men and 30,865 (13.4%) women developed overall cancer. Mobile phone use was significantly associated with higher risks of incident overall cancer [HR, 1.09; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06-1.12], nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC; HR, 1.08; 95% CI: 1.03-1.14), urinary tract cancer (HR, 1.18; 95% CI:1.05-1.32), and prostate cancer (HR, 1.19; 95% CI: 1.13-1.25) in men, and incident overall cancer (HR, 1.03; 95% CI: 1.00-1.06), NMSC (HR, 1.07; 95% CI: 1.01-1.13), and vulva cancer (HR, 1.74; 95% CI: 1.00-3.02) in women, but not with other cancers. Among mobile phone users, there was a dose-response relationship of length of mobile phone use with incident NMSC in men and women, and prostate cancer in men (all Ptrend < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There was a dose-response relationship of length of mobile phone use with incident NMSC in men and women, and prostate cancer in men. IMPACT: Our findings underscore the importance of limiting mobile phone use or keeping a distance from mobile phone for primary prevention of NMSC and prostate cancer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The association between vitamin D and dementia risk in those with prediabetes remains uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the association of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) with incident dementia among older adults with prediabetes, and examine whether apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotypes, vitamin D receptor (VDR), and vitamin-D-binding protein (VDBP) gene polymorphisms may modify this association. METHODS: A total of 34 237 participants aged ≥60 with prediabetes (HbA1c <6.5% and ≥5.7%) and without dementia at baseline were included from the UK Biobank. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) was measured using chemiluminescent immunoassay method. The primary outcome was incident all-cause dementia. Secondary outcomes included incident Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia, respectively. The VDR and VDBP gene polymorphisms included single nucleotide polymorphisms of rs7975232, rs1544410, rs2228570, rs731236, and rs7041, rs4588, respectively. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 11.8 years, 941 (2.7%) participants developed incident all-cause dementia. Overall, serum 25OHD was inversely associated with all-cause dementia (per standard deviation increment, adjusted hazard ratio: 0.82; 95% confidence interval: 0.75, 0.89). Similar trends were found for incident AD and vascular dementia. Furthermore, there was a stronger inverse relationship between serum 25OHD and all-cause dementia among VDR rs7975232 C allele noncarriers (p-interaction < 0.05). However, APOE Ɛ4, other VDR, and VDBP gene polymorphisms did not significantly modify the relation of serum 25OHD with incident all-cause dementia (all p-interactions >.05). CONCLUSIONS: There was an inverse association between serum 25OHD and incident dementia among older adults with prediabetes, especially in VDR rs7975232 AA allele carriers.
