RESUMO

The Li-CO2 batteries utilizing greenhouse gas CO2 possess advantages of high energy density and environmental friendliness. However, these batteries following Li2CO3-product route typically exhibit low work voltage (<2.5 V) and energy efficiency. Herein, we have demonstrated for the first time that cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) as homogeneous catalyst can elevate the work plateau towards 2.98 V, which is higher than its theoretical discharge voltage without changing the Li2CO3-product route. This unprecedented discharge voltage is illustrated by mass spectrum and electrochemical analyses that CoPc has powerful adsorption capability with CO2 (-7.484 kJ mol-1) and forms discharge intermediate of C33H16CoN8O2. Besides high discharge capacity of 18724 mAh g-1 and robust cyclability over 1600 hours (1000 mAh g-1 cut-off) at a current density of 100 mA g-1, the batteries show high temperature adaptability (-30-80 °C). Our work is paving a promising avenue for the progress of high-efficiency Li-CO2 batteries.

In this work, we investigated changes in the morphology of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), M1 subtype, and pupillary light reflex following local and selective ablation of photoreceptors in mice. Laser photocoagulation was used to selectively destroy four patches of photoreceptors per eye at around 4 papillary diameters from the optic disc and at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock positions between the retinal vessels in the adult mouse retina, leaving cells in the inner retina intact. Morphological parameters of individual M1 cells specifically labeled by the antibody against melanopsin (PA1-780), including dendritic field size, total dendritic length, and dendritic branch number, were examined 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks after photocoagulation with Neurolucida software. A considerable reduction in these parameters in M1 cells in the "lesioned areas" was found at all the four time points after photocoagulation, as compared with those in the "unlesioned areas". Although M1 cells in the lesioned areas showed significant changes as early as 1 week after laser treatment and the changes gradually increased, reaching a peak value at 2 weeks, morphological restoration was clearly seen in these cells over time. However, no difference in the morphological parameters of M1 cells was observed between the unlesioned areas of laser-treated mice and the corresponding areas of age-matched normal mice without laser lesions. Fluorescence intensity of the somata of melanopsin-positive M1 cells located inside the lesioned areas was significantly decreased at all the four time points after photocoagulation, whereas no changes in pupillary light reflex were detected at different light irradiations, indicating that photocoagulation-induced local photoreceptor loss and alterations of ipRGCs may be insufficient to cause abnormalities in non-image-forming (NIF) visual functions. The results suggest that intact photoreceptors could be crucial for maintaining the expression levels of melanopsin and normal morphology of M1 cells.

Valorization of corn waste involves synthesis of hydrochar for use as a sorbent for ammonium nitrogen recovery from swine manure compost leachate. However, the inability to directly capture organic nitrogen and insoluble nitrogen, and the low sorption ability of hydrochar remain key issues. To overcome these issues, we used hydrothermal assisted pretreatment of compost leachate to promote the solubilization of nitrogen contained in feces, and the conversion of organic nitrogen into ammonium nitrogen in the compost leachate. The synthesis hydrochar was activated with KOH to enhance its sorption ability, and then characterized by SEM, FTIR, elemental analysis, specific surface area, pore volume and size analysis. The content of ammonium nitrogen in hydrolysis leachate at 210 °C increased by 22.3% compared with raw compost leachate. 3D-EEM analysis indicated that aromatic protein substances were rapidly hydrolyzed to gradually increase the content of ammonium nitrogen and produce considerable humic acids. The maximum adsorption capacity of ammonium nitrogen reached 140.3 mg/g at 45 °C for KOH-activated hydrochar of 260 °C. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo second order kinetic models were good fit for the adsorption process of ammonium nitrogen at higher temperature (35 °C or 45 °C), and this reaction was mainly dominated by chemisorption. The adsorption of ammonium nitrogen was exothermic, spontaneous, and showed an increase in disorder at the solid-liquid interface. For resource recovery, the total release amount of ammonium nitrogen of five interval extractions could reach 12.2% of maximum adsorption capacity (140.3 mg/g) under alkaline (pH 8.0) condition. The nitrogen mass balance calculation revealed that 8.9% of total nitrogen in the compost leachate could be recovered.

Hyperthermophilic composting (HTC) is regarded as an effective method for processing sewage sludge. The aim of the study was to investigate effects of using biochar as an amendment on the preservation of nitrogen and passivation of heavy metal during the HTC process of sewage sludge. Results showed that HTC improved the fermentation efficiency and the compost maturity by increases in the temperature and germination index (GI) value, and decreases in the moisture and C/N ratio compared to conventional thermophilic composting. HTC process and the biochar addition resulted in a decrease of the nitrogen loss compared with the control pile during composting by promoting transforming ammonium into nitrite nitrogen. Adding biochar to composting inhibited the transformation of Cu, Zn and Pb into more mobile speciation compared to the control pile although their contents increased during composting, which lead to reduction in availability of heavy metals. Thus, HTC process with the addition of biochar is viable for the reduction of the nitrogen losses and mobility of heavy metal in compost.Implications: The treatment of sewage sludge is imminent due to its threat to general health and ecosystems. This work represents the effects of adding biochar on the preservation of nitrogen and passivation of heavy metal during hyperthermophilic composting of sewage sludge. Our results indicate that the additions of biochar and hyperthermophilic composting engendered the several of positive effects on the preservation of nitrogen and passivation of heavy metal. Thus, HTC process with the addition of biochar is viable for the reduction of the nitrogen losses and mobility of heavy metal in compost.

Improving the recovery of organic matter and phosphorus (P) from hazardous biowastes such as swine manure using acidic substrates (ASs) in conjunction with aerobic composting is of great interest. This work aimed to investigate the effects of ASs on the humification and/or P migration as well as on microbial succession during the swine manure composting, employing multivariate and multiscale approaches. Adding ASs, derived from wood vinegar and humic acid, increased the degree of humification and thermal stability of the compost. The 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray absorption near-edge structure analyses demonstrated compost P was in the form of struvite crystals, Ca/Al-P phases, and Poly-P (all inorganic P species) as well as inositol hexakisphosphate and Mono-P (organophosphorus species). However, the efficiency of P recovery could be improved by generating more struvite by adding the ASs. The flows among nutrient pools resulted from the diversity in the dominant microbial communities in different composting phases after introducing the ASs and appearance of Bacillus spp. in all phases. These results demonstrate the potential value of ASs for regulating and/or improving nutrients flow during the composting of hazardous biowastes for producing higher quality compost, which may maximize their beneficial benefits and applications.

There is significant interest in the treatment of swine manure, which is a hazardous biowaste and a source of pathogenic contamination. This work investigated the effects of microorganism-mediated inoculants (MMIs) on nutrient flows related to humification or phosphorus (P) dynamics during the aerobic composting of swine manure. The impact of MMIs on microbe succession was also evaluated. The addition of MMIs had positive effects associated with nutrient flows, including thermal activation, decreases in certain fluorescence emissions, lower mass loss and variations in levels of certain elements and functional groups. MMIs altered the maturation behavior and kinetics of organic matter while improving microbial activity. Phosphorus was found in the compost in the forms of MgNH4PO4·6H2O crystals and Poly-P as the IP species, and Mono-P as the OP species in compost generated from the dissolution or inter-transformation among P pools. These nutrient flows are attributed to changes in the structure of microbial communities as a consequence of introducing MMIs. Diverse microbial compositions were identified in different composting phases, although Bacillus appeared in each phase. This work provides support for the aerobic composting of hazardous biowaste as well as an improved understanding of nutrient flows, as a means of producing higher quality compost.
