Although the gut microbiota can influence central nervous system (CNS) autoimmune diseases, the contribution of the intestinal epithelium to CNS autoimmunity is less clear. Here, we showed that intestinal epithelial dopamine D2 receptors (IEC DRD2) promoted sex-specific disease progression in an animal model of multiple sclerosis. Female mice lacking Drd2 selectively in intestinal epithelial cells showed a blunted inflammatory response in the CNS and reduced disease progression. In contrast, overexpression or activation of IEC DRD2 by phenylethylamine administration exacerbated disease severity. This was accompanied by altered lysozyme expression and gut microbiota composition, including reduced abundance of Lactobacillus species. Furthermore, treatment with N2-acetyl-L-lysine, a metabolite derived from Lactobacillus, suppressed microglial activation and neurodegeneration. Taken together, our study indicates that IEC DRD2 hyperactivity impacts gut microbial abundances and increases susceptibility to CNS autoimmune diseases in a female-biased manner, opening up future avenues for sex-specific interventions of CNS autoimmune diseases.

RESUMO

The separator is an important component in batteries, with the primary function of separating the positive and negative electrodes and allowing the free passage of ions. Porous organic framework materials have a stable connection structure, large specific surface area, and ordered pores, which are natural places to store electrolytes. And these materials with specific functions can be designed according to the needs of researchers. The performance of porous organic framework-based separators used in rechargeable lithium metal batteries is much better than that of polyethylene/propylene separators. In this paper, the three most classic organic framework materials (MOF, COF, and HOF) are analyzed and summarized. The applications of MOF, COF, and HOF separators in lithium-sulfur batteries, lithium metal anode, and solid electrolytes are reviewed. Meanwhile, the research progress of these three materials in different fields is discussed based on time. Finally, in the conclusion, the problems encountered by MOF, COF, and HOF in different fields as well as their future research priorities are presented. This review will provide theoretical guidance for the design of porous framework materials with specific functions and further stimulate researchers to conduct research on porous framework materials.

MOTIVATION: Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is increasingly used to aid the understanding of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) transmission. The epidemiological analysis of tuberculosis based on the WGS technique requires a diverse collection of bioinformatics tools. Effectively using these analysis tools in a scalable and reproducible way can be challenging, especially for non-experts. RESULTS: Here, we present TransFlow (Transmission Workflow), a user-friendly, fast, efficient and comprehensive WGS-based transmission analysis pipeline. TransFlow combines some state-of-the-art tools to take transmission analysis from raw sequencing data, through quality control, sequence alignment and variant calling, into downstream transmission clustering, transmission network reconstruction and transmission risk factor inference, together with summary statistics and data visualization in a summary report. TransFlow relies on Snakemake and Conda to resolve dependencies among consecutive processing steps and can be easily adapted to any computation environment. Although the role of N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) methylation factors has been established in multiple cancer types, its involvement in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) remains limited. This study aims to explore the involvement of m6A regulators in GBM and examine their association with the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME). A comprehensive set of 24 candidate m6A RNA regulators was procured. Consensus clustering was performed based on these regulators to identify distinct GBM clusters. PD-L1 and PD-1 levels, immune cell infiltration, and immune scores were evaluated between two clusters. Prognostic signatures and correlation analysis with TIME were analyzed using Lasso and Spearman's analysis. GBM tissue was collected to verify the correlations. Eighteen m6A regulators (WTAP, YTHDF2, HNRNPC, CAPRIN1, YTHDF3, METTL14, GNL3, ZCCHC4, HNRNPD, YTHDF1, RBM15, PCIF1, RBM27, KIAA1429, MSI2, FTO, ALKBH5, and METTL3), PD-L1, and PD-1 were significantly upregulated in GBM tissue. These regulators were divided into two distinct molecular subtypes (clusters 1 and 2). Cluster 2 exhibited a significant increase in immune score, monocytes, M1 macrophages, activated mast cells, and eosinophils. HNRNPC, YWHAG, and ALKBH5 were significantly associated with TIME and positively correlated with PD-L1. Immune cell invasiveness profiles dynamically changed with copy number changes of these three m6A regulators. Finally, YWHAG and ALKBH5 were found to be independent prognostic indicators of GBM through risk analysis and were experimentally verified with clinical samples. YWHAG and ALKBH5 may be used as prognostic markers for patients with GBM. m6A methylation regulators may play an important role in regulating PD-L1/PD-1 expression and immune infiltration, thus having a significant impact on GBM TIME.

Mixed-dimensional perovskite (MDP) heterostructures are promising optoelectronic semiconductors. Yet, the current preparation methods involve complex experimental procedures and material compatibility constraints, limiting their widespread applications. Here, we present a one-step room temperature solution-based approach to synthesize a range of 1D C4N2H14PbBr4 and 3D APbBr3 (A = Cs+, MA+, FA+) self-assembled MDP heterostructures exhibiting high-efficiency white light-emitting properties. The ultra-broadband emission results from the synergy between the self-captured blue broadband emission from 1D perovskites and the green emission of 3D perovskites, covering the entire visible-light spectrum with a full width at half-maximum exceeding 170 nm and a remarkable photoluminescence quantum yield of 26%. This work establishes a novel prototype for the preparation of highly luminescent MDP heterostructures, offering insights for future research and industrialization in the realm of white light LEDs.

BACKGROUND: Phosphorylated Tau (p-Tau), an early biomarker of neuronal damage, has emerged as a promising candidate for predicting neurological outcomes in cardiac arrest (CA) survivors. Despite its potential, the correlation of p-Tau with other clinical indicators remains underexplored. This study assesses the predictive capability of p-Tau and its effectiveness when used in conjunction with other predictors. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective study, 230 CA survivors had plasma and brain computed tomography scans collected within 24 h after the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) from January 2016 to June 2023. The patients with prearrest Cerebral Performance Category scores ≥ 3 were excluded (n = 33). The neurological outcomes at discharge with Cerebral Performance Category scores 1-2 indicated favorable outcomes. Plasma p-Tau levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was recorded after ROSC, and the gray-to-white matter ratio (GWR) was calculated from brain computed tomography scans within 24 h after ROSC. RESULTS: Of 197 patients enrolled in the study, 54 (27.4%) had favorable outcomes. Regression analysis showed that higher p-Tau levels correlated with unfavorable neurological outcomes. The levels of p-Tau were significantly correlated with DBP and GWR. For p-Tau to differentiate between neurological outcomes, an optimal cutoff of 456 pg/mL yielded an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.71. Combining p-Tau, GWR, and DBP improved predictive accuracy (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve = 0.80 vs. 0.71, p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: Plasma p-Tau levels measured within 24 h following ROSC, particularly when combined with GWR and DBP, may serve as a promising biomarker of neurological outcomes in CA survivors, with higher levels predicting unfavorable outcomes.

Despite purpose measures being developed for adolescents, quantitative research investigating purposes prior to late adolescence and in non-Western societies remains nascent. This study evaluated the psychometric soundness of the Claremont Purpose Scale among Chinese adolescents. An initial prestudy (n = 34) was conducted to ensure linguistic equivalence. Subsequently, Study 1 (n = 1691) assessed the scale's reliability and factor structure, also investigating its functional equivalence across gender, adolescence stages, and language versions at the item level. Study 2 (n = 7842) investigated the scale's construct, convergent, predictive, and incremental validity, as well as tested for the scale's measurement invariance across different groups at the scale level. The results support the scale's use as a tool for researchers and practitioners to understand and cultivate purpose in adolescents.

Recently, halide perovskites (HPs) and layered two-dimensional (2D) materials have received significant attention from industry and academia alike. HPs are emerging materials that have exciting photoelectric properties, such as a high absorption coefficient, rapid carrier mobility and high photoluminescence quantum yields, making them excellent candidates for various optoelectronic applications. 2D materials possess confined carrier mobility in 2D planes and are widely employed in nanostructures to achieve interfacial modification. HP/2D material interfaces could potentially reveal unprecedented interfacial properties, including light absorbance with desired spectral overlap, tunable carrier dynamics and modified stability, which may lead to several practical applications. In this review, we attempt to provide a comprehensive perspective on the development of interfacial engineering of HP/2D material interfaces. Specifically, we highlight the recent progress in HP/2D material interfaces considering their architectures, electronic energetics tuning and interfacial properties, discuss the potential applications of these interfaces and analyze the challenges and future research directions of interfacial engineering of HP/2D material interfaces. This review links the fields of HPs and 2D materials through interfacial engineering to provide insights into future innovations and their great potential applications in optoelectronic devices.

Lithium dendrite and side reactions are two major challenges for lithium metal anode. Here, the highly lithophilic triazine ring in the hydrogen-bonded organic framework is recommended to accelerate the desolvation process of lithium ions. Among them, the formation of Li-N bonds between lithium ions and the triazine ring in CAM reduces the diffusion energy barrier of Li+ crossing the SEI interface and the desolvation energy barrier of Li+ exiting from the solvent sheath so that the rapid and homogeneous deposition of lithium-ion can be achieved. Meanwhile, the lithium-ion migration coefficient can be as high as 0.70. CAM separator is used to assemble lithium metal batteries with nickel-rich cathodes (NCM 622). When N/P = 8 and 5, the capacity retention rates of Li-NCM 622 full cell are 78.2% and 80.5% after 200 and 110 cycles, respectively, and the Coulomb efficiency can be maintained at 99.5%, showing excellent cycle stability.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate adolescents and children age using stepwise regression and machine learning methods based on the pulp and tooth volumes of the left maxillary central incisor and cuspid on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, and to compare and analyze the estimation results. METHODS: A total of 498 Shanghai Han adolescents and children CBCT images of the oral and maxillofacial regions were collected. The pulp and tooth volumes of the left maxillary central incisor and cuspid were measured and calculated. Three machine learning algorithms (K-nearest neighbor, ridge regression, and decision tree) and stepwise regression were used to establish four age estimation models. The coefficient of determination, mean error, root mean square error, mean square error and mean absolute error were computed and compared. A correlation heatmap was drawn to visualize and the monotonic relationship between parameters was visually analyzed. RESULTS: The K-nearest neighbor model (R2=0.779) and the ridge regression model (R2=0.729) outperformed stepwise regression (R2=0.617), while the decision tree model (R2=0.494) showed poor fitting. The correlation heatmap demonstrated a monotonically negative correlation between age and the parameters including pulp volume, the ratio of pulp volume to hard tissue volume, and the ratio of pulp volume to tooth volume. CONCLUSIONS: Pulp volume and pulp volume proportion are closely related to age. The application of CBCT-based machine learning methods can provide more accurate age estimation results, which lays a foundation for further CBCT-based deep learning dental age estimation research.

Brain arteriovenous malformation (BAVM) is a rare but serious cerebrovascular disease whose pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated. Studies have found that epigenetic regulation, genetic variation and their signaling pathways, immune inflammation, may be the cause of BAVM the main reason. This review comprehensively analyzes the key pathways and inflammatory factors related to BAVMs, and explores their interplay with epigenetic regulation and genetics. Studies have found that epigenetic regulation such as DNA methylation, non-coding RNAs and m6A RNA modification can regulate endothelial cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration and damage repair of vascular malformations through different target gene pathways. Gene defects such as KRAS, ACVRL1 and EPHB4 lead to a disordered vascular environment, which may promote abnormal proliferation of blood vessels through ERK, NOTCH, mTOR, Wnt and other pathways. PDGF-B and PDGFR-ß were responsible for the recruitment of vascular adventitial cells and smooth muscle cells in the extracellular matrix environment of blood vessels, and played an important role in the pathological process of BAVM. Recent single-cell sequencing data revealed the diversity of various cell types within BAVM, as well as the heterogeneous expression of vascular-associated antigens, while neutrophils, macrophages and cytokines such as IL-6, IL-1, TNF-α, and IL-17A in BAVM tissue were significantly increased. Currently, there are no specific drugs targeting BAVMs, and biomarkers for BAVM formation, bleeding, and recurrence are lacking clinically. Therefore, further studies on molecular biological mechanisms will help to gain insight into the pathogenesis of BAVM and develop potential therapeutic strategies.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Bilateral deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery targeting the globus pallidus internus (GPi) or the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is widely used in medication-refractory dystonia. However, evidence regarding target selection considering various symptoms remains limited. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of these two targets in patients with isolated dystonia. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 71 consecutive patients (GPi-DBS group, n = 32; STN-DBS group, n = 39) with isolated dystonia. Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale scores and quality of life were evaluated preoperatively and at 1, 6, 12, and 36 months postoperatively. Cognition and mental status were assessed preoperatively and at 36 months postoperatively. RESULTS: Targeting the STN (STN-DBS) yielded effects within 1 month (65% vs. 44%; p = 0.0076) and was superior at 1 year (70% vs. 51%; p = 0.0112) and 3 years (74% vs. 59%; p = 0.0138). For individual symptoms, STN-DBS was preferable for eye involvement (81% vs. 56%; p = 0.0255), whereas targeting the GPi (GPi-DBS) was better for axis symptoms, especially for the trunk (82% vs. 94%; p = 0.015). STN-DBS was also favorable for generalized dystonia at 36-month follow-up (p = 0.04) and required less electrical energy (p < 0.0001). Disability, quality of life, and depression and anxiety measures were also improved. Neither target influenced cognition. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated that the GPi and STN are safe and effective targets for isolated dystonia. The STN has the benefits of fast action and low battery consumption, and is superior for ocular dystonia and generalized dystonia, while the GPi is better for trunk involvement. These findings may offer guidance for future DBS target selection for different types of dystonia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Postmortem brain study indicated that cerebellar Purkinje cell (PC) loss might be a pathological finding in patients with inherited and idiopathic cervical dystonia (ICD). The analysis of conventional magnetic resonance imaging brain scans failed to yield support for this finding. Previous studies have identified that iron overload can be the consequence of neuron death. The objectives of this study were to investigate iron distribution and demonstrate changes in axons in the cerebellum, providing evidence for PC loss in patients with ICD. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with ICD (20 females) and 28 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited. A spatially unbiased infratentorial template was applied to perform cerebellum optimized quantitative susceptibility mapping and diffusion tensor analysis based on magnetic resonance imaging. Voxel-wise analysis was performed to assess cerebellar tissue magnetic susceptibility and fractional anisotropy (FA) alterations, and the clinical relevance of these findings was investigated in the patients with ICD. RESULTS: Increased susceptibility values revealed by quantitative susceptibility mapping in the right lobule CrusI, CrusII, VIIb, VIIIa, VIIIb and IX were found in the patients with ICD. A reduced FA value was found across almost all the cerebellum; an FA value of the significant clusters within the right lobule VIIIa significantly correlated with the motor severity of patients with ICD (r = -0.575, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Our study provided evidence for cerebellar iron overload and axonal damage in patients with ICD, which may indicate PC loss and related axonal changes. These results provide evidence for the neuropathological findings in patients with ICD and further highlight the cerebellar involvement in the pathophysiology of dystonia.

AIMS: This study aims to evaluate the drug-drug interaction (DDI) between hetrombopag and cyclosporine in healthy Chinese subjects. METHODS: Twenty-six eligible subjects enrolled in this single-centre, single-sequence, open-label, DDI study with 3 treatment periods, receiving 5 mg hetrombopag once on Day 1, 100 mg cyclosporine twice daily from Day 11 to Day 15 and 5 mg hetrombopag + 100 mg cyclosporine on Day 16. Serial blood samples were collected for pharmacokinetic evaluation. Adverse events were monitored throughout the study. RESULTS: The plasma hetrombopag geometric mean ratios (90% confidence interval) of maximum plasma concentration, area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) from predose to time of last quantifiable sample and AUC to infinity of coadministration of hetrombopag with cyclosporine vs. hetrombopag alone were 95.97% (70.08-131.43%), 105.75% (75.04-149.04%) and 104.19% (74.71-145.32%), respectively, indicating multiple doses of cyclosporine had minimal effects on hetrombopag exposure. The geometric mean ratios (90% confidence interval) of maximum blood concentration and AUC at steady state during a dosing interval for blood cyclosporine of coadministration vs. cyclosporine alone were 100.49% (91.89-109.89%) and 100.81% (107.88-103.82%), respectively, suggesting a single dose of hetrombopag had no impact on the exposure of cyclosporine. Coadministration of hetrombopag with cyclosporine was generally well tolerated. CONCLUSION: No clinically significant DDI was observed when coadministration of hetrombopag with cyclosporine. The results of this study will inform the appropriate use of this combination therapy both in clinical trials and clinical settings.

BACKGROUND: Gills de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder manifested by motor and vocal tics. Kleefstra syndrome 1 (KS1), a rare genetic disorder, is caused by haploinsufficiency of the EHMT1 gene and is characterized by intellectual disability (ID), childhood hypotonia, and distinctive facial features. Tourette-like syndrome in KS1 has rarely been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we describe a 7-year-old girl presenting involuntary motor and vocal tics, intellectual disability, childhood hypotonia, and dysmorphic craniofacial appearances, as well as comorbidities including attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and self-injurious behavior (SIB). The patient's CNV-seq testing revealed a de novo 320-kb deletion in the 9q34.3 region encompassing the EHMT1 gene. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first case reporting Tourette-like syndrome secondary to KS1 with a de novo microdeletion in the EHMT1 gene. Our case suggests TS with ID and facial anomalies indicate a genetic cause and broadens the phenotypic and genotypic spectrum of both TS and KS1.

BACKGROUND: Dental age estimation is important for developmental assessment and individual identification. The London Atlas, a recently proposed method for dental age estimation, has been reported to perform satisfactorily in various populations. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we assessed the reproducibility, repeatability and applicability of the London Atlas method in the East China population and compared it with the Demirjian method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed panoramic radiographs of 835 pediatric patients ages 6.0-19.9 years using the London Atlas and the Demirjian method. We employed the intraclass correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman analysis to evaluate reproducibility and repeatability, respectively. We assessed the agreement between dental age and chronological age and calculated 95% and 80% prediction intervals for each dental age stage. Sensitivity, specificity and predictive values were calculated to assess the performance of both methods for identifying threshold ages. RESULTS: The London Atlas has better reproducibility and repeatability (intraclass correlation coefficients: 0.98 and 0.99; 95% limits of agreement: - 1.34 to 1.56 and - 1.22 to 0.88, respectively). Dental age estimated using the London Atlas was closer to chronological age in both genders (median absolute error = 0.58). The 95% prediction intervals for chronological age were wide (0.99 to 9.89 years). CONCLUSION: The London Atlas has excellent reproducibility and repeatability. Thus, it might offer an alternative method for developmental assessment. We observed considerable variation in dental development in the East China population, which needs further research.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common and chronic mental illness with a high rate of disability. Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) makes online treatment available to patients and has been shown to be effective. However, 3-arm trials on ICBT, face-to-face cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT), and only medication are still lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study is a randomized, controlled, assessor-blinded trial of 3 groups for OCD: ICBT combined with medication, CBGT combined with medication, and conventional medical treatment (ie, treatment as usual [TAU]). The study aims to investigate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of ICBT related to CBGT and TAU for adults with OCD in China. METHODS: In total, 99 patients with OCD were selected and randomly assigned to the ICBT, CBGT, and TAU groups for treatment for 6 weeks. The primary outcomes were the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (YBOCS) and the self-rating Florida Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (FOCI), compared at baseline, during treatment (3 weeks), and after treatment (6 weeks), to analyze efficacy. The secondary outcome was the EuroQol Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS) scores of the EuroQol 5D Questionnaire (EQ-5D). The cost questionnaires were recorded to analyze cost-effectiveness. RESULTS: Repeated-measures ANOVA was used for data analysis, and the final effective sample size was 93 (ICBT: n=32, 34.4%; CBGT: n=28, 30.1%; TAU: n=33, 35.5%). After 6-week treatment, the YBOCS scores of the 3 groups significantly decreased (P<.001), and there were no significant differences among groups. The FOCI score of the ICBT (P=.001) and CBGT (P=.035) groups was significantly lower than that of the TAU group after treatment. The total cost of the CBGT group (renminbi [RMB] 6678.45, 95% CI 4460.88-8896.01 [US $1010.36, 95% CI 678.87-1345.84]) was significantly higher than that of the ICBT group (RMB 3308.81, 95% CI 2476.89-4140.73[US $500.58, 95% CI 374.72-626.43], P<.001) and the TAU group (RMB 2259.61, 95% CI 2074.16-2445.05 [US $341.85, 95% CI 313.79-369.90], P<.001) after treatment. The ICBT group spent RMB 303.19 (US $45.97) less than the CBGT group and RMB 11.57 (US $1.75) less than the TAU group for each unit reduction in the YBOCS score. CONCLUSIONS: Therapist-guided ICBT combined with medication is as effective as face-to-face CBGT combined with medication for OCD. ICBT combined with medication is more cost-effective than CBGT combined with medication and conventional medical treatment. It is expected to become an efficacious and economic alternative for adults with OCD when face-to-face CBGT is not available. The changes in active components in mulberry leaves harvested in different months and their antioxidant activities were investigated. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) with multivariate statistical tools was used to investigate the chemical constituents in the extracts of mulberry leaves. The results indicated that mulberry leaves were rich in phenolic acids, flavonoids, organic acids, and fatty acid derivatives. In addition, 25 different compounds were identified in the different batches of mulberry leaves. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity was measured to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant activities of mulberry leaves. Among the four batches, batch A, harvested in December, exhibited the strongest DPPH radical-scavenging activity, while batch B, harvested in March, showed the weakest activity. This was related to the total phenolic content in the mulberry leaves of each batch. The optimal harvest time of mulberry leaves greatly influences the bioactivity and bioavailability of the plant.

BACKGROUND: Vegetables are often blanched before drying. The hot-water blanching (HWB) of broccoli reduces quality and is environmentally harmful. In this work, hot-air-assisted radio frequency heating blanching (HA-RFB) of broccoli was developed for use before further drying processes. Blanching sufficiency, heating uniformity, and heating rate during HA-RFB were investigated to improve the product's physicochemical properties and texture. Suitable heating conditions were achieved when HA-RFB was applied with hot air at 70 °C, with an electrode gap of 10.7 cm, using a cylindrical container for the broccoli. RESULTS: Under these conditions, the relative peroxidase activity in broccoli decreased to 3.26% within 117 s, with 13.45% of weight loss. In comparison with HWB broccoli, the products blanched by HA-RFB preserved their texture, bioactive compounds, and microstructure better. The ascorbic acid, sulforaphane, and total glucosinolate content in HA-RFB products were 251.1%, 131.9% and 36.7% higher than those in HWB broccoli, and HA-RFB treatment led to a greater weight loss (13.45 ± 0.50%) than HWB (8.70 ± 1.70%), which is very helpful for the subsequent drying process. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that HA-RFB could be a promising substitute for HWB to blanch broccoli and other flower vegetables, especially as a pretreatment in the drying process. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Evidence-based practice is a problem-solving approach to healthcare delivery that reflects the best current scientific evidence. When healthcare providers face unexpected changes in a patient's condition or uncontrollable situations during care delivery, they may have less confidence or feel fearful / anxious about the care process and result. As people, healthcare providers may hold beliefs regarding the effect of external, supernatural forces on events, which may lead to superstitious beliefs and behaviors. Also, superstitious beliefs may be adopted by healthcare providers as a mechanism to cope with stress, anxiety, and uncertainty in situations where standard medical practices offer no ready solution. Although superstitious beliefs may help ease anxiety and feelings of failure in healthcare providers, this issue and the effects of these beliefs on medical staff behavior have not been adequately studied. The concept analysis strategy of Walker and Avant (2019) was applied in this study to define this concept and to examine (1) healthcare providers' loss of environment control and domination of irrationality in decision making, (2) the lack of objective evidence to explain cause-and-effect relationships in health-related situations, and (3) how unverified true or false claims become a compliance criterion among healthcare providers. Typical, borderline, and contrary cases were used to explain the concept of superstition in medical staff. The antecedents and possible consequences of healthcare providers holding superstitious beliefs were identified and the empirically addressed measurement tools were evaluated. This analysis may be used to improve the understanding of healthcare workers regarding superstitious beliefs. The results are expected to benefit clinical practice, facilitate further research, and enhance healthcare quality.
