RESUMO

Mulch coverage of mining tailings can create anaerobic conditions and consequently establish an anoxic environment that promotes the metabolic processes of anaerobic microorganisms. This anoxic environment has the potential to decrease heavy metal mobility and bioavailability. While tailings exposed to sunlight have been extensively studied, research on the effects of microbial-mediated geochemical cycling of heavy metals in mulch-covered tailings is scarce. This study aimed to examine the effects of mulch coverage-induced alterations in the structures of tailing microbial communities on the biogeochemical processes associated with heavy metals. Mulch coverage significantly reduced the pH of the tailings and the tailings exhibited heavy metal bioavailability. Random forest analysis demonstrated that mulch coverage-induced changes in the As/Cd-contaminated fractions and nutrients (total organic carbon and total nitrogen) were the most crucial predictors of microbial diversity and ecological clusters in the tailings. Notably, different from direct metal(loid) immobilization, mulch coverage can facilitate heavy metal immobilization in tailings by promoting microbial-mediated Fe, S, and As reduction. Overall, this study demonstrated that mulch coverage of tailings contributed to a reduction in heavy metal mobilization, which can be attributed to shifts in microbial-mediated Fe, S, and As reduction processes. The study provides valuable insights into the potential of mulch coverage as a remediation strategy and underscores the importance of microbial-mediated processes in managing heavy metal pollution in tailing systems.

RESUMO

IMPORTANCE: In this study, we revealed that the variation in rhizosphere and root endosphere microbial assemblage between host plant ecotypes contribute to their differential abilities to withstand cadmium (Cd) stressors. Furthermore, our study found that phenolic compounds, such as benzenoids and flavonoids, could function as both essential carbon sources and semiochemicals, thereby contributing to the assemblage of rhizosphere microbiome to resist Cd stress. Our findings provide new insights into the mechanisms that drive the differential assemblage of rhizosphere and root endosphere microbiomes to enhance plant growth under abiotic stress.

RESUMO

This study investigated the distribution features of uranium-238 (238U), radium-226 (226Ra), thorium-232 (232Th), and potassium-40 (40K) and evaluated the associated environmental radiological hazards of the topsoil and river sediments in the Jinding lead-zinc (Pb-Zn) mine catchment from Southwest China. The activity concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K ranged from 24.0 ± 2.29-60.3 ± 5.26 Bq.kg-1, from 32.5 ± 3.95-69.8 ± 3.39 Bq.kg-1, from 15.3 ± 2.24-58.3 ± 4.92 Bq.kg-1, and from 203 ± 10.2-1140 ± 27.4 Bq.kg-1, respectively. The highest activity concentrations for all these radionuclides were primarily found in the mining areas and decreased with increasing distance from the mining sites. The radiological hazard indices, including radium equivalent activity, absorbed gamma dose rate in the air, outdoor annual effective dose equivalent, annual gonadal dose equivalent, and excess lifetime cancer, revealed that the highest values were observed in the mining area and downstream, specifically in the vicinity of the ore body. These elevated values exceeded the global mean value but remained below the threshold value, suggesting that routine protection measures for Pb-Zn miners during production activities are sufficient. The correlation analysis and cluster analysis revealed strong associations between radionuclides such as 238U, 226Ra, and 232Th, indicating a common source of these radionuclides. The activity ratios of 226Ra/238U, 226Ra/232Th, and 238U/40K varied with distance, suggesting the influence of geological processes and lithological composition on their transport and accumulation. In the mining catchment areas, the variations in these activity ratios increased indicated the impact of limestone material dilution on the levels of 232Th, 40K, and 238U in the upstream region. Moreover, the presence of sulfide minerals in the mining soils contributed to the enrichment of 226Ra and the removal of 238U caused those activity ratios decreased in the mining areas. Therefore, in the Jinding PbZn deposit, the patterns of mining activities and surface runoff processes in the catchment area favored the accumulation of 232Th and 226Ra over 40K and 238U. This study provides the first case study on the geochemical distributions of natural radionuclides in a typical Mississippi Valley-type PbZn mining area and offers fundamental information on radionuclide migration and baseline radiometric data for PbZn deposits worldwide.

RESUMO

A record of trace elements in lake sediment can help in assessing the impact of anthropogenic activities on aquatic environments. In the present work, the trace elements profiles (Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn, As, and Cd) were determined in four sediment cores (QH01, QH02, QH07, and Z04) collected in 2012 and 2014 from Lake Qinghai to reconstruct the history of anthropogenic activity in the watershed and to evaluate the pollution status and eco-environmental risks of a typical Third Pole lake environment over the past century. The concentrations of Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn, As, and Cd in these studies ranged between 19.4 and 34.2 µg g-1, 35.6-53.6 µg g-1, 3.10-26.8 µg g-1, 56.4-93.5 µg g-1, 6.20-15.3 µg g-1, and 0.086-0.572 µg g-1, respectively. Statistical analyses indicated that the Pb, Zn, and Cd contents combination of coal, gasoline burning, and agricultural activities in the Lake Qinghai catchment and larger-scale atmospheric inputs during the past 60 years. The enrichment factors for Pb, Zn, and Cd in the sediments of Lake Qinghai are considered to be related to the region of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and national socioeconomic development. Enrich factor of Cd values was higher than 3.5 and maximum values of the geo-accumulation index of Pb and Cd were observed in the top layer of the sediment (0-2 cm), indicating moderate contamination. The RI values suggest that the risks to the ecological environment of Lake Qinghai are increasing since the 1950s. The results of this study illustrate that Lake Qinghai is still experiencing high trace elements pollution pressure due to the rapid environmental changes caused by anthropogenic activities on the remote and isolated Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

RESUMO

Combining environmental isotope analysis with principal component analysis can be an effective method to discriminate the inflows and sources of contamination in mining-affected watersheds. This paper presents a field-scale study conducted at an acid mine drainage (AMD)-contaminated site adjacent to a pyrite mine in South China. Samples of surface water and groundwater were collected to investigate transport in the vadose zone using stable isotopes of oxygen (δ18O) and hydrogen (δD) as environmental tracers. Principal component analysis of hydrogeochemical data was used to identify the probable sources of heavy metals in the AMD. The heavy metal pollution index (HPI) was applied to evaluate the pollution status of heavy metals in the groundwater. The groundwater associated with the Datai reservoir was recharged by atmospheric precipitation and surface water. On the side near the AMD pond, the groundwater was significantly affected by the soluble metals produced by pyrite oxidation. The concentrations of some metals (Al, Mn, and Pb) in all of the samples exceed the desirable limits prescribed by the World Health Organization (Guidelines for drinking-water quality, 4th edn. World Health Organization, Geneva, 2011). Among them, the concentration of Al is more than 30,000 times higher than the desirable limits prescribed by the World Health Organization (2011), and the concentration of Mn is more than 3000 times higher. The HPI values based on these heavy metal concentrations were found to be 10-1000 times higher than the critical pollution index value of 100. These findings provide a reference and guidance for research on the migration and evolution of heavy metals in vadose zone water in AMD-contaminated areas.

RESUMO

The relative abundance of Acidobacteriia correlated positively with the concentrations of arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu) and other metals, suggesting their adaptation of the metal-rich environments. Metagenomic binning reconstructed 29 high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) associated with Acidobacteriia, providing an opportunity to study their metabolic potentials. These MAGs contained genes to transform As, Hg and Cr through oxidation, reduction, efflux and demethylation, suggesting the potential of Acidobacteriia to transform such metal(loid)s. Additionally, genes associated with alleviation of acidic and metal stress were also detected in these MAGs. Acidobacteriia may have the capabilities to resist or transform metal(loid)s in acidic metal-contaminated sites. Moreover, these genes encoding metal transformation could be also identified in the Acidobacteriia-associated MAGs from five additional metal-contaminated sites across Southwest China, as well as Acidobacteriia-associated reference genomes from the NCBI database, suggesting that the capability of metal transformation may be widespread among Acidobacteriia members. This discovery provides an understanding of metabolic potentials of the Acidobacteriia in acidic metal-rich sites.

RESUMO

Due to extreme toxicity of the element of thallium (Tl), increasing aqueous Tl pollution incidents have aroused growing concerns. As the prevalent and stable form, i.e., monovalent Tl, the highly efficient removal methodologies of Tl(I) from (waste)water remains limited and challenging. In this study, an advanced oxidation method, the feasibility of using zero valent iron (Fe0) coupled with persulfate (PS) to treat Tl(I)-containing synthetic wastewater was investigated. Its influence parameters, including reaction time, initial Tl concentration, dosages of PS and Fe0, initial and coagulation pH, temperature, coexisting ions and organic matter (NO3-, SO42-, Cl- and HA) were examined. The results revealed that the system can be applied to a wide range of pH and temperature and the reaction equilibrium can be reached in about 30 min. Favorable Tl(I) removal rate (>98%) was observed in the synthetic wastewater with medium and relatively high Tl(I) concentration (≤0.250 mM). The analyses of characterization results including electron spin resonance spectrometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that ·OH played a vital role in the removal of Tl(I), which was oxidized and removed by co-precipitation. Fe0 can be served as a stable source of Fe2+ to efficiently catalyze PS. The remaining Fe0 can be easily separated because of its magnetism, assuring the promising reusability of the reactant. The study aims to provide references for treatment of real Tl polluted wastewater.

RESUMO

Anion pollution in water has become a problem that cannot be ignored. The anion concentration should be controlled below the national emission standard to meet the demand for clean water. Among the methods for removing excess anions in water, the adsorption method has a unique removal performance, and the core of the adsorption method is the adsorbent. In recent years, the emerging metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have the advantages of adjustable porosity, high specific surface area, diverse functions, and easy modification. They are very competitive in the field of adsorption of liquid anions. This article focuses on the adsorption of fluoride, arsenate, chromate, radioactive anions (ReO4-, TcO4-, SeO42-/SeO32-), phosphate ion, chloride ion, and other anions by MOFs and their derivatives. The preparation methods of MOFs are introduced in turn, the application of different types of metal-based MOFs to adsorb various anions were discussed in categories with their crystal structure and functional groups. The influence on the adsorption of anions is analyzed, including the more common and special adsorption mechanisms, adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics, and regeneration performance are briefly described. Finally, the current situation of MOFs adsorption of anions is summarized, and the outlook for future development is summarized to provide my own opinions for the practical application of MOFs.

RESUMO

Cathode electrocatalyst is quite critical to realize the application of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Perovskite oxides have been considered as potential MFCs cathode catalysts to replace Pt/C. Herein, Cu-doped perovskite oxide with a stable porous structure and excellent conductivity was successfully prepared through a sol-gel method. Due to the incorporation of Cu, CaFe0.9Cu0.1O3 has more micropores and a larger surface area, which are more conducive to contact with oxygen. Doping Cu resulted in more Fe3+ in B-site and thus enhanced its binding capability to oxygen molecules. The data from electrochemical test demonstrated that the as-prepared catalyst has good conductivity, high stability, and excellent ORR properties. Compared with Pt/C catalyst, CaFe0.9Cu0.1O3 exhibits a lower overpotential, which had an onset potential of 0.195 V and a half-wave potential of -0.224 V, respectively. CaFe0.9Cu0.1O3 displays an outstanding four-electron pathway for ORR mechanism and demonstrates superiors corrosion resistance and stability. The MFC with CaFe0.9Cu0.1O3 has a greater maximum power density (1090 mW m-3) rather than that of Pt/C cathode (970 mW m-3). This work demonstrated CaFe0.9Cu0.1O3 is an economic and efficient cathodic catalyst for MFCs.

RESUMO

Metal(loid) selection contributes to selection pressure on antibiotic resistance, but to our knowledge, evidence of the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) induced by metal(loid)s in mine soil ecosystems is rare. In the current study, using a high-throughput sequencing (HTS)-based metagenomic approach, 819 ARG subtypes were identified in a mine soil ecosystem, indicating that these environmental habitats are important reservoirs of ARGs. The results showed that metal(loid)-induced coselection has an important role in the distribution of soil ARGs. Furthermore, metal(loid) selection-induced ARGs were mainly associated with resistance-nodulation-division (RND) antibiotic efflux, which is distinct from what is observed in agricultural soil ecosystems. By using independent genome binning, metal(loid)s were shown impose coselection pressure on multiple ARGs residing on mobile genetic elements (MGEs), which promotes the dissemination of the antibiotic resistome. Interestingly, the current results showed that the density of several MGEs conferring ARGs was considerably higher in organisms most closely related to the priority pathogens Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Together, the results of this study indicate that mine soil ecosystems are important reservoirs of ARGs and that metal(loid)-induced coselection plays critical roles in the dissemination of ARGs in this type of soil habitat. KEY POINTS: • Mining soil ecosystem is a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). • ARGs distribute via bacterial resistance-nodulation-division efflux systems. • Metal(loid)s coselected ARGs residing on mobile genetic elements in P. aeruginosa and E. coli.

RESUMO

Environmental bisphenol F (BPF) has a cyclic endocrine disruption effect, seriously threatening animal and human health. It is frequently detected in environmental samples worldwide. For BPF remediation, biological methods are more environmentally friendly than physicochemical methods. White-rot fungi have been increasingly studied due to their potential capability to degrade environmental pollutants. Phanerochaete sordida YK-624 has been shown to degrade BPF by ligninolytic enzymes under ligninolytic conditions. In the present study, degradation of BPF under non-ligninolytic conditions (no production of ligninolytic enzymes) was investigated. Our results showed that BPF could be completely removed after 7-d incubation. A metabolite of BPF, 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone (DHBP) was identified by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance, and DHBP was further degraded by this fungus to form 4-hydroxyphenyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (HPHB). DHBP and HPHB were the intermediate metabolites of BPF and would be further degraded by P. sordida YK-624. We also found that cytochrome P450s played an important role in BPF degradation. Additionally, transcriptomic analysis further supported the involvement of these enzymes in the action of BPF degradation. Therefore, BPF is transformed to DHBP and then to HPHB likely oxidized by cytochrome P450s in P. sordida YK-624. Furthermore, the toxicological studies demonstrated that the order of endocrine-disrupting activity for BPF and its metabolites was HPHB > BPF > DHBP. KEY POINTS: • White-rot fungus Phanerochaete sordida YK-624 could degrade BPF. • Cytochrome P450s were involved in the BPF degradation. • The order of endocrine disrupting activity was: HPHB > BPF > DHBP.

RESUMO

Long-term combustion of low-quality coal may release hazardous elements into the environment causing serious environmental problems. This phenomenon is particularly prevalent in the Three Gorges Region of Southwest (SW), China. Cadmium (Cd), as well as other harmful elements are found to be highly enriched in coals and supergene environments in this area. In the existing literature, the behavioral issue of emission and transformation of the elevated trace elements during simulated household stove combustion from Cd-rich inferior coal remains unknown. This study investigated the emission of toxic elements, mineral assemblages, and provided technical guidance for reducing pollution by means of optimization combustion tests on inferior coals. The research may improve the understanding of geochemical characteristics from toxic elements emission in coal combustion endemic diseased areas. For this purpose, a series of simulated coal combustion experiments were conducted to reveal the release, mobility, and distribution of elevated elements in Cd-rich coal combustion products. The results showed that Cd, Mo, Cr, Cu, Zn, As, and Sb were significantly enriched in the inferior coals of the study area. Furthermore, large amounts of toxic elements were released as fly ash into the environment during the combustion process. In particular, combustion conditions played an important role in the emission and transformation of elevated elements. For example, higher temperatures promoted the release of Cd, Sb, Zn, and Tl into the environment. Oxygen-deficient combustion was found to liberate more Cd, Sb, and Tl to the atmosphere and generated complex mineral assemblages of lizardite, calcite, dolomite, forsterite, and enstatite. Moreover, toxic elements were found to be absorbed in the fine particle matter of fly ash from the endemic fluorosis area of SW, China. The findings of this work may aid to control the emission of toxic elements from inferior coals and mitigate the effect of toxic elements in the environment to protect human health.

RESUMO

Transforming to biochar provides an environmentally friendly approach for crop residue reutilization, which are usually applied as sorbent for heavy metal removal. As typical silicon-rich material, the specific sorptive mechanisms of rice straw derived biochar (RSBC) are concerned, especially at the low concentration range which is more environmentally relevant. In the present study, Cd sorption onto RSBCs at the concentration of ≤ 5 mg/L was investigated. The sorptive capacity was positively correlated with the pyrolytic temperature of the biochar and the environmental pH value. Water soluble minerals of the RSBCs played the dominant roles in Cd sorption, contributing 29.2%, 62.5% and 82.9% of the total sorption for RSBCs derived under 300°C, 500°C and 700°C, respectively. Increased number of cations, dominantly K+, were exchanged during the sorption. Coprecipitation with cations and carbonates may also be contributive to the sorption. The dissolution of silicon-containing minerals was found to be declined during sorption, suggesting its involvement in the sorption process, possibly through precipitation. Whilst, the sparingly soluble silicate crystals may impose ignorable role in the sorption. Complexation with organic groups is only a minor mechanism in Cd sorption, compared to the much more dominant roles of the inorganic ashes.

RESUMO

The assemblage of root-associated microorganisms plays important roles in improving their capability to adapt to environmental stress. Metal(loid) hyperaccumulators exhibit disparate adaptive capability compared to that of non-hyperaccumulators when faced with elevated contents of metal(loid)s. However, knowledge of the assemblage of root microbes of hyperaccumulators and their ecological roles in plant growth is still scarce. The present study used Pteris vittata as a model plant to study the microbial assemblage and its beneficial role in plant growth. We demonstrated that the assemblage of microbes from the associated bulk soil to the root compartment was based on their lifestyles. We used metagenomic analysis and identified that the assembled microbes were primarily involved in root-microbe interactions in P. vittata root. Notably, we identified that the assembled root microbiome played an important role in As requisition, which promoted the fitness and growth of P. vittata. This study provides new insights into the root microbiome and potential valuable knowledge to understand how the root microbiome contributes to the fitness of its host.

RESUMO

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic element and non-essential to human. Herein, the source and fate of Cd were examined in a typical sediment profile from the North River, South China, which was affected by the massive Pb-Zn smelting activities for decades. An exceptionally high enrichment of Cd, 107-441 mg/kg, was observed across the whole profile. Approximately 50-75% of Cd was retained in the weak acid soluble fraction. Risk assessment based on geoaccumulation index (Igeo), potential ecological risk index (Eri), bioavailable metal index (BMI) and toxic risk index (TRI) further indicated an extremely strong degree of potential ecological pollution and high toxic risks. The mineralogical composition of particles from the sediment profile exhibited the presence of pyrite, magnetite, wurtzite and greenockite. This further confirmed that Cd was migrated from smelting slags to the North River basin and enriched in sediment profile. Sediment Cd speciation analysis also implied a possible transformation of Cd from metal oxides in smelting slags to adsorbed phases and carbonates, which enhances the bioavailability of Cd. The findings indicate proper countermeasures or remediation approaches should be promptly taken towards high ecological risks of Cd arising from the depth profile extending nearly 1 m, due to lead-zinc smelting related activities.

RESUMO

Thallium (Tl) is a toxic element, but little is known about microbial communities' response to TI mobilization and sequestration. Here, we characterize the microbial communities and their feedbacks to Tl-pollution in riverbank soils to understand the distribution of microbial metal tolerance. These soils have been affected by pollution sourced from a Tl-rich mineralized area in Lanmuchang, Guizhou, China. In all studied soil samples, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Actinobacteria were revealed relatively in higher abundance at the phylum level. The results indicated that a number of microbial communities including Gemmatimonadetes, and Actinobacteria were correlated with total Tl, suggesting potential roles of these microbes to Tl tolerance. The patterns of phylogenetic beta-diversity in studied samples showed a high diversity of the microbial community in soils with high Tl concentrations. Sequence analysis of microbial community indicated that most of the environmental parameters in soils were associated with the major phylogenetic groups such as Gemmobacteria, Bryobacteria, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Rhodobacteria. Some species of microbes, Nocardioides (genus), Actinomycetales (Order), Ralstonia (phyla) and Sphingomonas (genus) might are tolerant of Tl. These results provide direction to the microbial communities in the presence of elevated Tl concentration in Lanmuchang and shed light on bioremediation of Tl polluted locations.

RESUMO

Thallium (Tl) is an extremely toxic element, whose toxicity is even higher than mercury, arsenic, and cadmium. It is of great significance to hinder the migration and transfer of Tl from soils to the plants. A synthetic mineral amendment (SMA), mainly composed of different silicates, was evaluated for its effects on the transformation and retention of Tl in two typical highly Tl-contaminated soils from Southwest China. The results indicated that the addition of mineral amendment increased the soil of the pH by 0.46-2.13 units and distinctly reduced the content of active thallium in the soils. The extent of Tl reduction was related to the morphological characteristics of the original soil In particular, the application of the mineral amendment transformed 25.8-52.5% of the active Tl fractions in the soils to the residual fraction at 60 d. Adding mineral amendment to the soils can provide conditions to facilitate Tl to enter the silicate crystal lattice. The results of XPS evidenced that the proportion of Tl(I) in the soil was greatly reduced after adding the mineral amendment.

RESUMO

Thallium (Tl) has been identified as a priority contaminant because of its severe toxic effects. Exact measurement of Tl is a challenge because it is difficult to avoid altering the element's chemical speciation during sampling, transport, and storage. In situ measurement may be a good choice. Based on the in situ technique of diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT), new DGT devices equipped with novel laboratory-synthesized manganese oxide (δ-MnO2) binding gels were developed and systematically validated for the measurement of Tl, including Tl(I) and Tl(III) species, in water. Comparison between Chelex binding gel and δ-MnO2 gel on the uptake kinetics of Tl demonstrated that δ-MnO2 binding gels could adsorb Tl rapidly and effectively. Removal of Tl from the δ-MnO2 gels was achieved by use of 1 mol·L-1 oxalic acid, yielding elution efficiencies of 1.0 for Tl(I) and 0.86 for TI(III). Theoretical responses from DGT devices loaded with δ-MnO2 gel (δ-MnO2-DGT) were obtained irrespective of pH (4-9) and ionic strength (0.1-200 mmol·L-1 NaNO3). δ-MnO2-DGT showed good potential for long-term monitoring of Tl due to its high adsorption capacity of 27.1 µg·cm-2 and the stable performance of δ-MnO2 binding gel kept in solution, containing only 10 mmol·L-1 NaNO3, for at least 117 days. Field deployment trials confirmed that δ-MnO2-DGT can accurately measure the time-averaged concentrations of Tl in fluvial watercourses. In summary, the newly developed δ-MnO2-DGT technique shows potential for environmental monitoring and biogeochemical investigation of Tl in waters.

RESUMO

Arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) are both toxic metalloids that are of primary concern for human health. Mining activity has introduced elevated levels of arsenic and antimony into the rivers and has increased the risks of drinking water contamination in China. Due to their mobility, the majority of the metalloids originating from mining activities are deposited in the river sediments. Thus, depending on various geochemical conditions, sediment could either be a sink or source for As and Sb in the water column. Microbes are key mediators for biogeochemical transformation and can both mobilize or precipitate As and Sb. To further understand the microbial community responses to As and Sb contamination, sediment samples with different contamination levels were collected from three rivers. The result of the study suggested that the major portions of As and Sb were in strong association with the sediment matrix and considered nonbioavailable. These fractions, however, were also suggested to have profound influences on the microbial community composition. As and Sb contamination caused strong reductions in microbial diversity in the heavily contaminated river sediments. Microorganisms were more sensitive to As comparing to Sb, as revealed by the co-occurrence network and random forest predictions. Operational taxonomic units (OTUs) that were potentially involved in As and Sb metabolism, such as Anaerolinea, Sphingomonas, and Opitutus, were enriched in the heavily contaminated samples. In contrast, many keystone taxa, including members of the Hyphomicrobiaceae and Bradyrhizobiaceae families, were inhibited by metalloid contamination, which could further impair crucial environmental services provided by these members.

RESUMO

Microbial communities inhabiting the acid mine drainage (AMD) have been extensively studied, but the microbial communities in the coal mining waste dump that may generate the AMD are still relatively under-explored. In this study, we characterized the microbial communities within these under-explored extreme habitats and compared with those in the downstream AMD creek. In addition, the interplay between the microbiota and the environmental parameters was statistically investigated. A Random Forest ensemble model indicated that pH was the most important environmental parameter influencing microbial community and diversity. Parameters associated with nitrogen cycling were also critical factors, with positive effects on microbial diversity, while S-related parameters had negative effects. The microbial community analysis also indicated that the microbial assemblage was driven by pH. Various taxa were enriched in different pH ranges: Sulfobacillus was the indicator genus in samples with pH < 3 while Acidobacteriaceae-affiliated bacteria prevailed in samples with 3 < pH < 3.5. The detection of some lineages that are seldom reported in mining areas suggested the coal mining dumps may be a reservoir of phylogenetic novelty. For example, potential nitrogen fixers, autotrophs, and heterotrophs may form diverse communities that actively self-perpetuate pyrite dissolution and acidic waste generation, suggesting unique ecological strategies adopted by these innate microorganisms. In addition, co-occurrence network analyses suggest that members of Acidimicrobiales play important roles in interactions with other taxa, especially Fe- and S-oxidizing bacteria such as Sulfobacillus spp.
