OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of the neuroendoscopy-assisted entire-process visualization technique (NEAEVT) of ventricular puncture for external ventricular drainage. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients with cerebral hemorrhage who underwent unilateral ventricular puncture for external ventricular drainage in our hospital from June 2021 to June 2023 were analyzed. Patients were grouped according to puncture technique: NEAEVT (30 patients), freehand (30 patients), and laser-navigation-assisted (28 patients). Operation time, drainage tube placement, and catheter-related hemorrhage incidence were compared between the groups. RESULTS: Mean operation time significantly differed between the freehand, NEAEVT, and laser-assisted groups (17.07, 18.37, and 34.04 min, respectively; P <0.0001). The position of the drainage tube was optimal or adequate in all patients of the NEAEVT group; optimal/adequate positioning was achieved in 80% of the freehand group. No catheter-related hemorrhage occurred in the NEAEVT group. Three freehand group patients and 2 laser-assisted group patients experienced catheter-related hemorrhage. CONCLUSION: The NEAEVT of ventricular puncture is accurate and achieves ventricular drainage without significantly increasing surgical trauma, operation time, or incidence of hemorrhage.

We fabricate and characterize a hybrid quantum device that consists of five gate-defined double quantum dots (DQDs) and a high-impedance NbTiN transmission resonator. The controllable interactions between DQDs and the resonator are spectroscopically explored by measuring the microwave transmission through the resonator in the detuning parameter space. Utilizing the high tunability of the system parameters and the high cooperativity (Ctotal > 17.6) interaction between the qubit ensemble and the resonator, we tune the charge-photon coupling and observe the collective microwave response changing from linear to nonlinear. Our results present the maximum number of DQDs coupled to a resonator and manifest a potential platform for scaling up qubits and studying collective quantum effects in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid cavity quantum electrodynamics systems.

Metal oxide nanozymes have emerged as the most efficient and promising candidates to mimic antioxidant enzymes for treatment of oxidative stress-mediated pathophysiological disorders, but the current effectiveness is unsatisfactory due to insufficient catalytic performance. Here, we report for the first time an intrinsic strain-mediated ultrathin ceria nanoantioxidant. Surface strain in ceria with variable thicknesses and coordinatively unsaturated Ce sites was investigated by theoretical calculation analysis and then was validated by preparing ∼1.2 nm ultrathin nanoplates with ∼3.0% tensile strain in plane/∼10.0% tensile strain out of plane. Compared with nanocubes, surface strain in ultrathin nanoplates could enhance the covalency of the Ce-O bond, leading to increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD)-mimetic activity by ∼2.6-fold (1533 U/mg, in close proximity to that of natural SOD) and total antioxidant activity by ∼2.5-fold. As a proof of concept, intrinsic strain-mediated ultrathin ceria nanoplates could boost antioxidation for improved ischemic stroke treatment in vivo, significantly better than edaravone, a commonly used clinical drug.

The dysfunction of blood-brain barrier (BBB) plays a pivotal role in brain injury and subsequent neurological deficits of ischemic stroke. The current study aimed to examine the potential correlation between p53 inhibition and the neuroprotective effect of on the BBB. Rat middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion model (MCAO/R) and oxygen-glucose deprivation/re-oxygenation model (OGD/R) were employed to simulate cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (CI/R) injury occurrence in vivo and in vitro. mNSS and TTC staining were applied to evaluate neurological deficits and brain infarct volumes. Evans blue (EB) staining was carried out to examine the permeability of BBB. RT-qPCR and Western blot to examine the mRNA and protein levels. Cell viabilities were detected by CCK-8. Flow cytometry and ELISA assay were employed to examine apoptosis and neuroinflammation levels. TEER value and sodium fluorescein were carried out to explore the permeability of HBMEC cells. PFT-α inhibited P53 and promoted the expression of ß-catenin and cyclin D1, which were reversed by DKK1. PFT-α inhibited neurological deficits, brain infarct volume, neuroinflammation, apoptosis, and BBB integrity than the MCAO/R rats; however, this inhibition was reversed by DKK1. PFT-α promoted OGD/R-induced cell viability in NSCs, and suppressed inflammation and apoptosis, but DKK1 weakened the effect of PFT-α. PFT-α increased OGD/R-induced TEER values in cerebrovascular endothelial cells, inhibited sodium fluorescein permeability, and increased the mRNA levels of tight junction protein, but they were all attenuated by DKK1. PFT-α protects the BBB after acute ischemic stroke via the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway, which in turn improves neurological function.

We experimentally and theoretically study a driven hybrid circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) system beyond the dispersive coupling regime. Treating the cavity as part of the driven system, we develop a theory applicable to such strongly coupled and to multiqubit systems. The fringes measured for a single driven double quantum dot (DQD)-cavity setting and the enlarged splittings of the hybrid Floquet states in the presence of a second DQD are well reproduced with our model. This opens a path to study Floquet states of multiqubit systems with arbitrarily strong coupling and reveals a new perspective for understanding strongly driven hybrid systems.

Amyloidomas of the nervous system are rare in clinical practice and rarely reported in the literature. Primary intrasellar amyloidomas are even rarer. We encountered a 39-year-old male patient, whose chief complaint was headache and who had been hospitalized for 10 days. The patient did not have any past medical history. Preoperative computed tomography and magnetic resonance were nevertheless performed to exclude the possibility of pituitary apoplexy or Rathke cleft cyst. Due to the progressive worsening of his headache, a neuroendoscopic transsphenoidal tumor resection was carried out. During surgery it was found that the tumor exhibited a yellow crystalline substance with an inadequate blood supply and no obvious encapsulation. The tumor was completely resected under endoscopy, the amyloidoma was confirmed by postoperative pathological results, and no pituitary adenoma was found. The patient's headache resolved after surgery, and after a 1-year follow-up, the tumor had not recurred.

In light of the high bit error rate in satellite network links, the traditional transmission control protocol (TCP) fails to distinguish between congestion and wireless losses, and existing loss differentiation methods lack heterogeneous ensemble learning models, especially feature selection for loss differentiation, individual classifier selection methods, effective ensemble strategies, etc. A loss differentiation method based on heterogeneous ensemble learning (LDM-HEL) for low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite networks is proposed. This method utilizes the Relief and mutual information algorithms for selecting loss differentiation features and employs the least-squares support vector machine, decision tree, logistic regression, and K-nearest neighbor as individual learners. An ensemble strategy is designed using the stochastic gradient descent method to optimize the weights of individual learners. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed LDM-HEL achieves higher accuracy rate, recall rate, and F1-score in the simulation scenario, and significantly improves throughput performance when applied to TCP. Compared with the integrated model LDM-satellite, the above indexes can be improved by 4.37%, 4.55%, 4.87%, and 9.28%, respectively.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the efficacy of multi-layer skull base reconstruction after endoscopic transnasal surgery for invasive pituitary adenomas (IPAs). CLINICAL RATIONALE FOR THE STUDY: Skull base reconstruction for IPAs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective analysis involved 160 patients with IPAs who underwent operations from October 2018 to October 2020. All patients were diagnosed with IPAs by pituitary enhanced magnetic resonance imaging, and all tumours were confirmed to be Knosp grades 3a, 3b, or 4. The experimental group and the control group comprised 80 patients in each, and we used different methods to reconstruct the skull base in each group. The comparison indicators included cerebrospinal fluid leakage, sellar floor bone flap (or middle turbinate) shifting, delayed healing of the skull base reconstructed tissue, nasal discomfort, and epistaxis. We used the chi-square test, and p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: In the experimental group, cerebrospinal fluid leakage occurred intraoperatively in 73 patients, two of whom had cerebrospinal fluid leakage postoperatively. Brain CT 12 months postoperatively showed no sellar floor bone flap (or middle turbinate) shifting. Endoscopic transnasal checks performed seven days after surgery showed that the skull base reconstructed tissue had healed in 74 patients and had failed to heal in six. However, endoscopic transnasal checks showed that all six of these patients' pedicled nasoseptal flaps had healed well by 14 days after surgery. Other sequelae comprised nasal discomfort in four patients, and epistaxis in four. In the control group, cerebrospinal fluid leakage occurred intraoperatively in 71 patients, 14 of whom had cerebrospinal fluid leakage postoperatively. Brain CT 12 months postoperatively showed floor bone flap (or middle turbinate) shifting in 12 patients. Endoscopic transnasal checks performed seven days after surgery showed that the skull base reconstructed tissue had healed in 65 patients. In 12 patients, pedicled nasoseptal flaps had healed well by 14 days after surgery, while the remaining three patients required reoperation. Other sequelae comprised nasal discomfort in five patients, and epistaxis in six. CONCLUSIONS: This new method of multi-layer skull base reconstruction could play an important role in endoscopic transnasal IPA surgery.

It is essential to create organic compounds that exhibit circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in the near-infrared (NIR) range. Helicene-type emitters possess appealing chiroptical features, however, such NIR molecules are scarce due to a paucity of synthetic strategies. Herein, we developed a series of helical ß-isoindigo-based B-O-B bridged aza-BODIPY analogs that were synthesized conveniently. The reaction of diimino-ß-isoindigo with a heteroaromatic amine produced a restricted ligand cavity, which triggered off the generation of a B-O-B bridge. The B-O-B bridge led to distorted conformations that satisfy the helical requirements, resulting in excellent spectroscopic and chiroptical properties. Tunable CPL with the highest luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum ) of 1.3×10-3 and a CPL brightness (BCPL =11.5 M-1 cm-1 ) in the NIR region was achieved. This synthetic approach is expected to offer a new opportunity to chiral chemistry and increase flexibility for chiroptical tuning.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging- and machine-learning-based brain-age prediction of schizophrenia is well established. However, the diagnostic significance and the effect of early medication on first-episode schizophrenia remains unclear. AIMS: To explore whether predicted brain age can be used as a biomarker for schizophrenia diagnosis, and the relationship between clinical characteristics and brain-predicted age difference (PAD), and the effects of early medication on predicted brain age. METHOD: The predicted model was built on 523 diffusion tensor imaging magnetic resonance imaging scans from healthy controls. First, the brain-PAD of 60 patients with first-episode schizophrenia, 60 healthy controls and 21 follow-up patients from the principal data-set and 40 pairs of individuals in the replication data-set were calculated. Next, the brain-PAD between groups were compared and the correlations between brain-PAD and clinical measurements were analysed. RESULTS: The patients showed a significant increase in brain-PAD compared with healthy controls. After early medication, the brain-PAD of patients decreased significantly compared with baseline (P < 0.001). The fractional anisotropy value of 31/33 white matter tract features, which related to the brain-PAD scores, had significantly statistical differences before and after measurements (P < 0.05, false discovery rate corrected). Correlation analysis showed that the age gap was negatively associated with the positive score on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale in the principal data-set (r = -0.326, P = 0.014). CONCLUSIONS: The brain age of patients with first-episode schizophrenia may be older than their chronological age. Early medication holds promise for improving the patient's brain ageing. Neuroimaging-based brain-age prediction can provide novel insights into the understanding of schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy is an effective strategy for preventing cancer metastasis, including osteosarcoma. However, cancer radioresistance limits the efficiency of radiotherapy. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the mechanism of osteosarcoma radioresistance. METHODS: The osteosarcoma tissues and adjacent healthy tissues were collected from 53 osteosarcoma patients. The expression of LINC00210, miR-342-3p, and GFRA1 mRNA were determined using qRT-PCR. Cell viability, cell apoptosis, and cell surviving fraction were determined by MTT assay, flow cytometry, and colony formation assay, respectively. Western blot was performed to detect the protein levels. Luciferase assay was conducted to verify the relationship between LINC00210, miR-342-3p, and GFRA1. RESULTS: LINC00210 and GFRA1 were up-regulated, and miR-342-3p was down-regulated in osteosarcoma tissues and cells. The expression of LINC00210 in osteosarcoma was negatively related to miR-342-3p expression and positively associated with GFRA1. Besides, there was a negative correlation between LINC00210 and GFRA1 expression in osteosarcoma. Also, LINC00210 and GFRA1 were up-regulated, and miR-342-3p was down-regulated in osteosarcoma cells exposed to 4 Gy irradiation treatment. Furthermore, either LINC00210 knockdown or miR-342-3p overexpression enhanced the radiosensitivity of osteosarcoma cells. Moreover, LINC00210 increased GFRA1 expression via sponging miR-342-3p. Additionally, LINC00210 knockdown improved the radiosensitivity of osteosarcoma cells by regulating GFRA1 expression via sponging miR-342-3p. CONCLUSION: LINC00210 modulated the radiosensitivity of osteosarcoma cells via the miR-342-3p/GFRA1 axis, making LINC00210 a novel target for improving radiotherapy efficiency in osteosarcoma.

Previous evidence has shown that the long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 858 (LINC00858) is an oncogene in non-small cell lung cancers. However, the role LINC00858 plays in gastric cancer (GC) is not clear. To illustrate the role LINC00858 plays in GC, the LINC00858 expression in GC and normal tissues was firstly detected. Then, the viability, proliferation and migration of GC BGC823 and MGC803 cells were assessed following LINC00858 knockdown by si-LINC00858 transfection. The results showed that LINC00858 had a high level of expressions in GC tissues as demonstrated by both online data and qRT-PCR assay. Also, the knockdown of LINC00858 reduced the proliferation and migration of BGC823 and MGC803 cells in vitro. Taken together, our data indicate that LINC00858 plays an oncogenic role in GC cells and might act as a potential therapeutic target for GC.

Bone infection or osteomyelitis is usually a complication of inflammation-related traumatic bone injury. Selenium has been shown to have potential cytoprotective effects and the ability to reduce oxidative stress and apoptotic events in osteomyelitis, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. Here, we used LPS-induced apoptotic MC3T3-E1 cells and aimed to confirm selenium's protective effect on cell apoptosis as well as to investigate the underlying mechanisms of this role. Our investigation confirmed selenium-mediated inhibition of LPS-induced cell apoptosis and ROS accumulation in MC3T3-E1 cells. Upon selenium treatment, the bcl-2 levels were upregulated, while the levels of Bax and cyto-C were down-regulated. Furthermore, these effects were accompanied by the suppression of miR-155 and the phosphorylation of protein kinase B (Akt). A more in-depth study demonstrated that LY294002 (a specific inhibitor of PI3K), abolished the selenium-mediated cytoprotective effect of MC3T3-E1 cells against LPS-induced injury and down-regulation of miR-155. In general, these results demonstrated that selenium exerts a cytoprotective effect by attenuating cell apoptosis and oxidative damage via a PI3K/Akt/miR-155-dependent mechanism.

Total sleep deprivation (TSD) is common in modern society leading to deterioration of multiple aspects of cognition. Dynamic interaction effect of circadian rhythmicity and homeostatic sleep pressure on sustained attention have been intensively investigated, while how this effect was represented on performance and cerebral responses to working memory, another important element of many neurobehavioral tasks, was not well elucidated. Thirty-six healthy subjects with intermediate chronotype performed the Sternberg working-memory task (SWMT) while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging every 2 hr from 10:00 p.m. on the first day to 6:00 a.m. on the second day. Using data from three imaging sessions (10:00 p.m., 04:00 a.m., and 06:00 a.m.), we found that the slowest SWMT reaction time and weakest cerebral responses were not at the end of TSD (06:00 a.m.) but during the early morning (04:00 a.m.) hours of the TSD. In addition, during this worst period of TSD, reaction time for the SWMT were found to be negatively correlated with task-related activation in the angular gyrus and positively correlated with the degree of negative correlation between the control and default networks. Our results revealed a rebound of SWMT reaction time and cerebral responses after the mid-time point of regular biological sleep night and provided more evidence that different cognitive tasks are differentially affected by sleep loss and circadian rhythmicity.

Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is associated with excessive inflammatory response, however, the pathophysiology of inflammation is poorly understood. The retinoid-related orphan receptor α (RORα) is a key inflammatory regulator, but the mechanisms underlying its role remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate how RORα was involved in the regulation of inflammatory response. Here we put forward a hypothesis that RORα might negatively regulate inflammatory response by controlling silent information regulator Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) expression. Stimulation of macrophages in vitro with LPS and LPS administration in vivo were used to explore the function of RORα and the relationship between RORα and SIRT1. We found that the level of RORα was suppressed in macrophages stimulated with LPS and overexpression or knockdown of RORα by transfection with lentivirus or siRNAs significantly decreased or increased, respectively, the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1ß, TNF, IL-6 and MCP-1. Importantly, overexpression of RORα suppressed inflammation and alleviated LPS-induced organ injury in vivo. Further study showed that RORα could regulate SIRT1 expression and, consequently, affect deacetyation and nuclear translocation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) subunit p65. Moreover, the activation of SIRT1 by its specific agonist, SR1720, could reduce the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in RORα knockdown macrophages stimulated with LPS. In conclusion, we demonstrated that RORα could alleviate LPS-induced inflammation and organ injury both in vivo and in vitro by blocking NF-κB p65 nuclear translocation and restricting acetylation of NF-κB p65 at lysine 310 via the regulation of SIRT1 expression. Targeting RORα might be a promising therapeutic strategy to regulate inflammatory disorders.

The local angular distortions Δθ are theoretically studied for the various Ni3+ centers in LiAly Co1-y O2 at different Al concentrations (y = 0, 0.1, 0.5, and 0.8) based on the perturbation calculations of electron paramagnetic resonance g factors for a trigonally distorted octahedral 3d7 cluster with low spin (S = 1/2). Due to the Jahn-Teller effect, the [NiO6 ]9- clusters are found to experience the local angular distortions (Δθ ≈ 5°-9°) along the C3 axis. The variation trend of Δθ with y is in accordance with that of anisotropy (Δg = g||  - g⊥ ). As the substitutions can weaken bond strengths between transition metal and oxygen and the structural stability plays an important role in cathode performances, detailed investigations on the structural properties of the cathode materials LiAly Co1-y O2 can be practically helpful to understand the performances of these materials. The oxy-redox properties of LiAly Co1-y O2 systems are comprehensible in the framework of Ni3+ /Ni4+ couples, and the trigonally compressed octahedral [NiO6 ]9- clusters are applicable to the clarification of the electrochemical properties of lithium nickel oxide batteries. It appears that LiAl0.8 Co0.2 O2 with the largest Al concentration may correspond to the smallest distortion among the mixing systems.

BACKGROUND Surgical treatment of acetabular fractures is one of the greatest challenges for orthopedic surgeons. Fixation of most displaced fractures requires extensive exposure, which may lead to complications, including blood loss, neural or vascular injury, postoperative infection, wound healing problems, and heterotopic bone formation. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study was conducted to certify an anatomic plate with an anterior column lag screw guiding device to repair the posterior acetabulum. Complete pelvic spiral computed tomography (CT) scan data were collected from 56 patients. The posterior column of the acetabulum was simulated with a lag screw. The guiding device for the plate was designed by measuring the position of the screw point and the direction and maximum diameter of the screw. RESULTS The distance from the screw point to the apex of the greater sciatic notch was farther in women than in men. The distance from the screw point to the ischial spine was also farther in women than in men. The q angle (front inclination angle) of the screw was lower in women than in men. The j angle (camber screw angle) was greater in women than in men. The success rate when using the guided device was significantly higher than when using traditional pedicle screws. CONCLUSIONS The guided device was very useful for improving placement success and accuracy rates of the acetabular posterior anatomical anterior column plate using antegrade lag screws, and for reducing surgical risk and injury.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to provide valid data for a plate-screw fixation model for fractured posterior-anterior columns of the acetabulum. MATERIAL AND METHODS Nineteen cadaveric bony hemi-pelvis specimens were obtained and 50 healthy adults were enrolled. The modified Stoppa approach and computed tomography (CT) imaging were used to collect the measured parameter data of the module. RESULTS The measured parameter data were as follows: OP, 0.96±0.32 cm in females and 0.92±0.16 cm in males (P>0.05); PI, 0.98±0.28 cm in females, and 0.75±0.23 cm in males (P>0.05); ÐÏ´, 59.68°±6.28° in females and 56.75°±3.22° in males (P>0.05); and Ðφ, 41.27°±2.76° in females and 34.31°±2.78° in males (P<0.05). The corresponding CT image data were as follows: PI, 1.08±0.22 cm in females and 0.85±0.27 cm in males (P>0.05); OP, 1.06±0.29 cm in females and 1.12±0.24 cm in males (P>0.05); ÐÏ´, 55.33°±4.00° in females and 55. 50°±3.43° in males (P>0.05); and Ðφ was 39.21°±2.45°in females and 35.58°±2.31°in males (P<0.05). No significant difference with respect to sex and side existed between specimens and healthy adults (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS The measured parameter data obtained in healthy adults and cadaveric specimens provided an anatomic basis for the designation of the guide module, and thus confirmed the accuracy and safety of screw placement in fractured columns of the acetabulum.

Six species of the ant-eating spider of the family Zodariidae are described from Xizang, China, including five new species: Asceuachayusp. nov. (♀), A.dawaisp. nov. (♂♀), Mallinellamigusp. nov. (♂), M.mеdogsp. nov. (♂♀), and M.yadongsp. nov. (♂♀). The female of Cydrelalinzhiensis (Hu, 2001) is described here for the first time. Descriptions and photographs of all the species are provided.

To investigate the impact of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) on the prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). The data of 312 patients with CRC treated in the First Affiliated Hospital of Huzhou University from 2012 to 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were divided into a comorbidity group (n = 62) and a non-comorbidity group (n = 250) according to the presence of T2DM. The baseline data of the two groups were balanced by 1:2 propensity score matching (PSM). Kaplan-Meier analysis and Log-rank test were employed to compare the 5-year overall survival (OS) rates of patients. Cox regression model and inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) were utilized to assess the influence of T2DM on 5-year OS of patients. Based on the results of Cox regression, a nomogram model of T2DM on 5-year OS of patients was constructed. A total of 62 patients in the comorbidity group and 124 patients in the non-comorbidity group were matched using PSM. The 5-year OS rate was lower in the comorbidity group than in the non-comorbidity group (82.23% VS 90.32%, P = 0.038). Subgroup analysis showed that the 5-year overall survival rate was higher in the good blood glucose control group than in the poor blood glucose control group (97.14% VS 62.96%, P<0.01). Multivariate Cox regression showed that the 5-year mortality risk in the comorbidity group was 2.641 times higher than that in the non-comorbidity group (P = 0.026). IPTW analysis showed that the 5-year risk of death in the comorbidity group was 2.458 times that of the non-comorbidity group (P = 0.019). The results showed that poor blood glucose control, BMI≥25 kg/m2, low differentiation, III/IV stage, and postoperative infection were independent factors affecting the 5-year overall survival rate of CRC patients (P<0.05). The ROC curve showed that the AUCs of the constructed model in predicting the 5-year OS in the training set and the testing set were 0.784 and 0.776, respectively. T2DM is identified as a risk factor for reduced 5-year survival among CRC patients, necessitating increased attention for this subgroup, particularly those with poor blood glucose control.
