RESUMO

The assembly of conjugated organic molecules from solution to solid-state plays a critical role in determining the thin film morphology and optoelectronic properties of solution-processed organic electronics and photovoltaics. During evaporative solution processing, π-conjugated systems can assemble via various forms of intermolecular interactions, forming distinct aggregate structures that can drastically tune the charge transport landscape in the solid-state. In blend systems composed of donor polymer and acceptor molecules, assembly of neat materials couples with phase separation and crystallization processes, leading to complex phase transition pathways which govern the blend film morphology. In this review, we provide an in-depth review of molecular assembly processes in neat conjugated polymers and nonfullerene small molecule acceptors and discuss their impact on the thin film morphology and optoelectronic properties. We then shift our focus to blend systems relevant to organic solar cells and discuss the fundamentals of phase transition and highlight how the assembly of neat materials and processing conditions can affect blend morphology and device performance.

RESUMO

Heading date (or flowering time) is a key agronomic trait that affects seasonal and regional adaption of rice cultivars. An unoptimized heading date can either not achieve a high yield or has a high risk of encountering abiotic stresses. There is a strong demand on the mild to moderate adjusting the heading date in breeding practice. Genome editing is a promising method which allows more precise and faster changing the heading date of rice. However, direct knock out of major genes involved in regulating heading date will not always achieve a new germplasm with expected heading date. It is still challenging to quantitatively adjust the heading date of elite cultivars with best adaption for broader region. In this study, we used a CRISPR-Cas9 based genome editing strategy called high-efficiency multiplex promoter-targeting (HMP) to generate novel alleles at cis-regulatory regions of three major heading date genes: Hd1, Ghd7 and DTH8. We achieved a series of germplasm with quantitative variations of heading date by editing promoter regions and adjusting the expression levels of these genes. We performed field trials to screen for the best adapted lines for different regions. We successfully expanded an elite cultivar Ningjing8 (NJ8) to a higher latitude region by selecting a line with a mild early heading phenotype that escaped from cold stress and achieved high yield potential. Our study demonstrates that HMP is a powerful tool for quantitatively regulating rice heading date and expanding elite cultivars to broader regions.

RESUMO

Thyroid cancer is the most common primary endocrine malignancy with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) its most common subtype. The jump in diagnoses over last many years has prompted re-assessment of molecularly targeted therapies and the discovery of novel targets. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are increasingly being assessed for their expression in various PTC models. Interestingly, in addition to cell line models, a large proportion of the reported studies have evaluated lncRNA levels in PTC patient samples providing an immediate clinical relevance of their findings. While most lncRNAs either promote or suppress PTC pathogenesis, data on individual lncRNAs is not very clear. As expected, lncRNAs function in PTC through sponging of microRNAs as well as modulation of several signaling pathways. The process of epithelial-mesenchymal transition and the PI3K/Akt and wnt signaling pathways have emerged as the primary targets of lncRNAs in PTC. This comprehensive review discusses all the information that is available on lncRNAs in PTC, ranging from in vitro and in vivo findings to the possible role of lncRNAs as diagnostic and/or prognostic biomarkers.

RESUMO

The basal levels of salicylic acid (SA) vary dramatically among plant species. In the shoot, for example, rice contains almost 100 times higher SA levels than Arabidopsis. Despite its high basal levels, neither the biosynthetic pathway nor the biological functions of SA are well understood in rice. Combining with metabolite analysis, physiological, and genetic approaches, we found that the synthesis of basal SA in rice shoot is dependent on OsAIM1, which encodes a beta-oxidation enzyme in the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) pathway. Compromised SA accumulation in the Osaim1 mutant led to a lower shoot temperature than wild-type plants. However, this shoot temperature defect resulted from increased transpiration due to elevated steady-state stomatal aperture in the mutant. Furthermore, the high basal SA level is required for sustained expression of OsWRKY45 to modulate the steady-state stomatal aperture and shoot temperature in rice. Taken together, these results provide the direct genetic evidence for the critical role of the PAL pathway in the biosynthesis of high basal level SA in rice, which plays an important role in the regulation of steady-state stomatal aperture to promote fitness under stress conditions.

RESUMO

Soy whey is an abundant, nutrient-rich and safe wastewater produced in tofu processing, so it is necessary to valorize it instead of discarding it as sewage. Whether soy whey can be used as a fertilizer substitute for agricultural production is unclear. In this study, the effects of soy whey serving as a nitrogen source to substitute urea on soil NH3 volatilization, dissolved organic matter (DOM) components and cherry tomato qualities were investigated by soil column experiment. Results showed that the soil NH4+-N concentrations and pH values of the 50% soy whey fertilizer combined with 50% urea (50%-SW) and 100% soy whey fertilizer (100%-SW) treatments were lower than those of 100% urea treatment (CKU). Compared with CKU, 50%-SW and 100%-SW treatments increased the abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) by 6.52-100.89%, protease activity by 66.22-83.78%, the contents of total organic carbon (TOC) by 16.97-35.64%, humification index (HIX) of soil DOM by 13.57-17.99%, and average weight per fruit of cherry tomato by 13.46-18.56%, respectively. Moreover, soy whey as liquid organic fertilizer reduced the soil NH3 volatilization by 18.65-25.27% and the fertilization cost by 25.94-51.87% compared with CKU. This study provides a promising option with economic and environmental benefits for soy whey utilization and cherry tomato production, which contributes to the win-win effectiveness of sustainable production for both the soy products industry and agriculture.

RESUMO

Rice is a facultative short day (SD) plant. In addition to serving as a model plant for molecular genetic studies of monocots, rice is a staple crop for about half of the world's population. Heading date is a critical agronomic trait, and many genes controlling heading date have been cloned over the last 2 decades. The mechanism of flowering in rice from recognition of day length by leaves to floral activation in the shoot apical meristem has been extensively studied. In this review, we summarise current progress on transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of heading date in rice, with emphasis on post-translational modifications of key regulators, including Heading date 1 (Hd1), Early heading date 1 (Ehd1), Grain number, plant height, and heading date7 (Ghd7). The contribution of heading date genes to heterosis and the expansion of rice cultivation areas from low-latitude to high-latitude regions are also discussed. To overcome the limitations of diverse genetic backgrounds used in heading date studies and to gain a clearer understanding of flowering in rice, we propose a systematic collection of genetic resources in a common genetic background. Strategies in breeding adapted cultivars by rational design are also discussed.

RESUMO

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) provides effective control of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication and maintains viral loads of HIV at undetectable levels. Interruption of ART causes rapid recrudescence of HIV plasma viremia due to reactivation of latently HIV-infected cells. Here, we characterize the timing of both the initial and subsequent successful viral reactivations following ART interruption in macaques infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). We compare these to previous results from HIV-infected patients. We find that on average the time until the first successful viral reactivation event is longer than the time between subsequent reactivations. Based on this result, we hypothesize that the reactivation frequency of both HIV and SIV may fluctuate over time, and that this may impact the treatment of HIV. We develop a stochastic model incorporating fluctuations in the frequency of viral reactivation following ART interruption that shows behaviours consistent with the observed data. Furthermore, we show that one of the impacts of a fluctuating reactivation frequency would be to significantly reduce the efficacy of 'anti-latency' interventions for HIV that aim to reduce the frequency of reactivation. It is therefore essential to consider the possibility of a fluctuating reactivation frequency when assessing the impact of such intervention strategies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate the clinical value of multi-index combined detection in the diagnosis of new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: A total of 63 laboratory confirmed patients treated in our hospital were selected as the COVID-19 group, including 28 severe patients and 35 non-severe patients. Another 50 healthy subjects undergoing physical examination simultaneously were selected as the healthy group. Here we performed a study on the laboratory characteristics and explored their efficacy for diagnosis of the disease. RESULTS: Compared with healthy people, the abnormal indicators of patients with COVID-19 are low levels of lymphocytes (LYM), red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin (HGB), platelets (PLT), total protein (TP), and albumin (ALB), and high levels of monocytes (MON), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), and C-reactive protein (CRP). The level of MON and CRP in severe patients were significantly increased compared with non-severe pneumonia patients, and indicators such as LYM and ALB were significantly reduced (p < 0.05). The sensitivity and specificity of the combined detection of LYM, MON, RBC, HGB, PLT, TP, ALB, AST, GGT, and CRP was 97.7% and 91.7%, which was higher than the single item (p < 0.05). The sensitivity and specificity of combined detection of LYM, MON, ALB, and CRP to predict the severity of COVID-19 were 96.4% and 73.0%, which were higher than those of separate detections (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The index of LYM, MON, RBC, HGB, PLT, TP, ALB, AST, GGT, and CRP can be used for the diagnosis of new COVID-19, and the indicators of LYM, MON, ALB, and CRP may be predictors of severe pneumonia. The combined detection of the laboratory indexes can diagnose COVID-19 and predict the severity more effectively and accurately.

RESUMO

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study energy and wave vector dependence of spin fluctuations in SrCo_{2}As_{2}, derived from SrFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2} iron pnictide superconductors. Our data reveal the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations at wave vectors Q_{AF}=(1,0) and Q_{FM}=(0,0)/(2,0), respectively. By comparing neutron scattering results with those of dynamic mean field theory calculation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that both AF and FM spin fluctuations in SrCo_{2}As_{2} are closely associated with a flatband of the e_{g} orbitals near the Fermi level, different from the t_{2g} orbitals in superconducting SrFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2}. Therefore, Co substitution in SrFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2} induces a t_{2g} to e_{g} orbital switching, and is responsible for FM spin fluctuations detrimental to the singlet pairing superconductivity.

RESUMO

High-temperature superconductivity is closely adjacent to a long-range antiferromagnet, which is called a parent compound. In cuprates, all parent compounds are alike and carrier doping leads to superconductivity, so a unified phase diagram can be drawn. However, the properties of parent compounds for iron-based superconductors show significant diversity and both carrier and isovalent dopings can cause superconductivity, which casts doubt on the idea that there exists a unified phase diagram for them. Here we show that the ordered moments in a variety of iron pnictides are inversely proportional to the effective Curie constants of their nematic susceptibility. This unexpected scaling behavior suggests that the magnetic ground states of iron pnictides can be achieved by tuning the strength of nematic fluctuations. Therefore, a unified phase diagram can be established where superconductivity emerges from a hypothetical parent compound with a large ordered moment but weak nematic fluctuations, which suggests that iron-based superconductors are strongly correlated electron systems.

RESUMO

The effects of shear degradation on the microstructures and properties of grease were investigated using a planetary ball mill to simulate a bearing shear zone on grease. The microstructure, cone penetration, colloidal stability, rheological properties noise properties, water washout characteristics and low-temperature torque of lithium grease were characterized. The microstructure of the initial lithium grease is a three-dimensional network structure formed by the uniform fibers. The entanglement level is high. As the ball milling shear time increases, the network structure of lithium grease is destroyed and the fibers are sheared to become short. Eventually all of them become short fibers. The performance test of lithium grease reveal that the cone penetration increases, colloidal stability, structural strength, noise properties, water washout characteristics of lithium grease gradually decreased with the increase of ball milling shear time. Additionally, the low-temperature starting torque and running torque of the grease gradually decrease. This phenomenon occurs due to changes in the microstructure of lithium grease. The shear degradation of lithium grease was mainly divided into two stages: the rapid stage was the destruction of the thickener network structure and the fibers being shortened by shearing. The slow stage was the process in which short fibers were sheared into shorter fibers.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of blastocyst formation timing on the quality of porcine embryos derived from parthenogenetic activation. Newly formed blastocysts at days 6, 7, and 8 of culture [termed formation 6, 7, and 8 blastocysts (F6, F7, and F8 blastocysts)] were obtained, and a series of parameters related to the quality of blastocysts, including apoptosis incidents, DNA replication, pluripotent factors, and blastocyst hatching capacity, were assessed. Delayed blastocyst formation (F7 and/or F8 blastocysts) led to increased levels of ROS, DNA damage, and apoptosis while decreasing the mitochondrial membrane potential, DNA replication, Oct4 levels, and numbers of Sox2-positive cells. F7 blastocysts showed a significantly reduced hatching rate compared to F6 blastocysts; however, F8 blastocysts were unable to develop to the hatching stage. Collectively, our findings suggest a negative correlation between delayed blastocyst formation and blastocyst quality.

RESUMO

The axon initial segment (AIS) is located at the proximal axon demarcating the boundary between axonal and somatodendritic compartments. The AIS facilitates the generation of action potentials and maintenance of neuronal polarity. In this study, we show that the location of AIS assembly, as marked by Ankyrin G, corresponds to the nodal plane of the lowest-order harmonic of the Laplace-Beltrami operator solved over the neuronal shape. This correlation establishes a coupling between location of AIS assembly and neuronal cell morphology. We validate this correlation for neurons with atypical morphology and neurons containing multiple AnkG clusters on distinct neurites, where the nodal plane selects the appropriate axon showing enriched Tau. Based on our findings, we propose that Turing patterning systems are candidates for dynamically governing AIS location. Overall, this study highlights the importance of neuronal cell morphology in determining the precise localization of the AIS within the proximal axon.

RESUMO

Flexible pressure sensors based on micro-/nanostructures can be integrated into robots to achieve sensitive tactile perception. However, conventional symmetric structures, such as pyramids or hemispheres, can sense only the magnitude of a force and not its direction. In this study, a capacitive flexible tactile sensor inspired by skin structures and based on an asymmetric microhair structure array to perceive directional shear force is designed. Asymmetric microhair structures are obtained by two-photon polymerization (TPP) and replication. Owing to the features of asymmetric microhair structures, different shear force directions result in different deformations. The designed device can determine the directions of both static and dynamic shear forces. Additionally, it exhibits large response scales ranging from 30 Pa to 300 kPa and maintains high stability even after 5000 cycles; the final relative capacitive change (ΔC/C0 ) is <2.5%. This flexible tactile sensor has the potential to improve the perception and manipulation ability of dexterous hands and enhance the intelligence of robots.

RESUMO

A high-temperature-resistance insulating layer with high thermal conductivity is the key component for fabricating the instant metal-based electric heating tube. However, it is still a challenge for materials to possess excellent high-temperature resistance, superior insulating property, and high thermal conductivity at the same time. Here, a novel SiO2 bridged AlN/MSR composite based on methylphenyl silicone resin (MSR) and AlN filler was reported. MSR with a high thermal decomposition temperature of 452.0 °C and a high withstand voltage of 5.6 kV was first synthesized by adjusting the contents of alkyl and phenyl groups. The superior high-temperature resistant insulating property is 3.7 and 2.4 times higher than the national standard requirement of 1.5 kV and commercial silicone resin, respectively. The hydrogen bonds formed between SiO2, AlN, and MSR and the electrostatic adsorption between SiO2 and AlN can remarkably improve the uniform dispersion of AlN in MSR and thus enhance the insulating property, thermal conductivity, and thermal stability. With the addition of 2 wt% SiO2 and 50 wt% AlN, the SiO2-AlN/MSR composite exhibits an extremely high withstand voltage of 7.3 kV, a high thermal conductivity of 0.553 W·m-1·K-1, and an enhanced decomposition temperature of 475 °C. The superior insulating property and thermal conductivity are 4.9 and 1.3 times higher than the national standard requirement and pure MSR, respectively. This novel composite shows great potential for application in the fields requiring integrated superior insulating property, high-temperature resistance, and high thermal conductivity.

RESUMO

Controlling the multi-level assembly and morphological properties of conjugated polymers through structural manipulation has contributed significantly to the advancement of organic electronics. In this work, a redox active conjugated polymer, TPT-TT, composed of alternating 1,4-(2-thienyl)-2,5-dialkoxyphenylene (TPT) and thienothiophene (TT) units is reported with non-covalent intramolecular S⋯O and S⋯H-C interactions that induce controlled main-chain planarity and solid-state order. As confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, these intramolecular interactions influence the main chain conformation, promoting backbone planarization, while still allowing dihedral rotations at higher kinetic energies (higher temperature), and give rise to temperature-dependent aggregation properties. Thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) behavior is confirmed by cross-polarized optical microscopy (CPOM) and closely correlated with multiple thermal transitions observed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This LC behavior allows us to develop and utilize a thermal annealing treatment that results in thin films with notable long-range order, as shown by grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD). Specifically, we identified a first LC phase, ranging from 218 °C to 107 °C, as a nematic phase featuring preferential face-on π-π stacking and edge-on lamellar stacking exhibiting a large extent of disorder and broad orientation distribution. A second LC phase is observed from 107 °C to 48 °C, as a smectic A phase featuring sharp, highly ordered out-of-plane lamellar stacking features and sharp tilted backbone stacking peaks, while the structure of a third LC phase with a transition at 48 °C remains unclear, but resembles that of the solid state at ambient temperature. Furthermore, the significance of thermal annealing is evident in the ∼3-fold enhancement of the electrical conductivity of ferric tosylate-doped annealed films reaching 55 S cm-1. More importantly, thermally annealed TPT-TT films exhibit both a narrow distribution of charge-carrier mobilities (1.4 ± 0.1) × 10-2 cm2 V-1 s-1 along with a remarkable device yield of 100% in an organic field-effect transistor (OFET) configuration. This molecular design approach to obtain highly ordered conjugated polymers in the solid state affords a deeper understanding of how intramolecular interactions and repeat-unit symmetry impact liquid crystallinity, solution aggregation, solution to solid-state transformation, solid-state morphology, and ultimately device applications.

RESUMO

N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) is one of the most abundant modifications of eukaryotic mRNA, but its comprehensive biological functionality remains further exploration. In this study, we identified and characterized a new flowering-promoting gene, EARLY HEADING DATE6 (EHD6), in rice. EHD6 encodes an RNA recognition motif (RRM)-containing RNA binding protein that is localized in the non-membranous cytoplasm ribonucleoprotein (RNP) granules and can bind both m6A-modified RNA and unmodified RNA indiscriminately. We found that EHD6 can physically interact with YTH07, a YTH (YT521-B homology) domain-containing m6A reader. We showed that their interaction enhances the binding of an m6A-modified RNA and triggers relocation of a portion of YTH07 from the cytoplasm into RNP granules through phase-separated condensation. Within these condensates, the mRNA of a rice flowering repressor, CONSTANS-like 4 (OsCOL4), becomes sequestered, leading to a reduction in its protein abundance and thus accelerated flowering through the Early heading date 1 pathway. Taken together, these results not only shed new light on the molecular mechanism of efficient m6A recognition by the collaboration between an RNA binding protein and YTH family m6A reader, but also uncover the potential for m6A-mediated translation regulation through phase-separated ribonucleoprotein condensation in rice.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to analyze the contents of ascorbic acid, phenolics, flavonoids, carotenoids, lycopene, ß-carotene and their antioxidant activities in the different maturity stages of tomatoes. The results showed that tomatoes in pink and red stages exhibited higher contents of ascorbic acid concomitant with the correspondent higher hydrophilic antioxidant activities. The contents of phenolics, carotenoids and lycopene were increasing till the red maturity stage. Significant correlation between the DPPH radical scavenging activity and carotenoids, however lycopene was effective in its lowest concentration. The ß-carotene was intensively synthesized between the green and breaker maturity stages, and higher correlated with the FRAP capacity. These findings indicated that tomatoes can be considered as natural sources of bioactive compounds regardless of the maturity stages, while tomatoes in pink and red maturity stages has higher nutritional value and antioxidant activity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Exergames are promising exercise tools for improving health. To the best of our knowledge, no systematic review has compared the effects of commercial exergames and conventional exercises on improving executive functions (EFs) in children and adolescents. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of commercial exergames and conventional exercises on improving EFs in children and adolescents. METHODS: Following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, 5 randomized controlled trial (RCT) databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, and SPORTDiscus) were searched from their inception to July 7, 2022, to identify relevant RCTs. The Cochrane Collaboration tool was used to evaluate the risk of bias for each study. GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) was used to evaluate the overall quality of evidence. RESULTS: In total, 8 RCTs including 435 children and adolescents were included in the analysis. Commercial exergames had no significant benefit on overall EFs compared to conventional exercises (Hedges g=1.464, 95% CI -0.352 to 3.280; P=.06). For core EFs, there was no evidence to suggest that commercial exergames are more beneficial for improving cognitive flexibility (g=0.906, 95% CI -0.274 to 2.086; P=.13), inhibitory control (g=1.323, 95% CI -0.398 to 3.044; P=.13), or working memory (g=2.420, 95% CI -1.199 to 6.038; P=.19) than conventional exercises. We rated the evidence for overall EFs, cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, and working memory as being of very low quality due to inconsistency (large heterogeneity) and imprecision (low number of people). Additionally, no effects of the intervention were observed in the acute and chronic groups. CONCLUSIONS: We do not have strong evidence to support the benefit of commercial exergaming on EFs because we did not observe a Hedges g close to 0 with tight CIs. Further research is needed to confirm this hypothesis. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO CRD42022324111; https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?RecordID=324111.

RESUMO

The role of solvents is crucial in catalyst preparation. With regard to catalysts prepared with activated carbon (AC) as the carrier, when water is used as a solvent it is difficult for the solution to infiltrate the AC. Because AC comprises a large number of C atoms and is a nonpolar material, it is more effective for the adsorption of nonpolar substances. Since the water and active ingredients are polar, they cannot easily infiltrate AC. In this study, the dispersion of the active component was significantly improved by optimizing the solvent, and the particle size of the active component was reduced from 33.08 nm to 15.30 nm. The specific surface area of the catalyst is significantly increased, by 10%, reaching 991.49 m2/g. Under the same reaction conditions, the conversion of acetic acid by the catalyst prepared with the mixed solvent was maintained at approximately 65%, which was 22% higher than that obtained using the catalyst prepared with water as the solvent.
