RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Liver transplantations (LTs) with extended criteria have produced surgical results comparable to those obtained with traditional standards. However, it is not sufficient to predict hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence after LT according to morphological criteria alone. The present study aimed to construct a nomogram for predicting HCC recurrence after LT using extended selection criteria. METHODS: Retrospective data on patients with HCC, including pathology, serological markers and follow-up data, were collected from January 2015 to April 2020 at Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Logistic least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to identify and construct the prognostic nomogram. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, Kaplan-Meier curves, decision curve analyses (DCAs), calibration diagrams, net reclassification indices (NRIs) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) values were used to assess the prognostic capacity of the nomogram. RESULTS: A total of 301 patients with HCC who underwent LT were enrolled in the study. The nomogram was constructed, and the ROC curve showed good performance in predicting survival in both the development set (2/3) and the validation set (1/3) (the area under the curve reached 0.748 and 0.716, respectively). According to the median value of the risk score, the patients were categorized into the high- and low-risk groups, which had significantly different recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates (P < 0.01). Compared with the Milan criteria and University of California San Francisco (UCSF) criteria, DCA revealed that the new nomogram model had the best net benefit in predicting 1-, 3- and 5-year RFS. The nomogram performed well for calibration, NRI and IDI improvement. CONCLUSIONS: The nomogram, based on the Milan criteria and serological markers, showed good accuracy in predicting the recurrence of HCC after LT using extended selection criteria.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Total laparoscopic total gastrectomy (TLTG) has been limited in application because of the difficulty of intracorporeal oesophagojejunostomy. Theoretically, an intracorporeal single-stapling oesophagojejunostomy using a circular stapler could be commonly used and provide favourable outcomes for TLTG, as in open total gastrectomy(OTG), in which the use of circular staplers in oesophagojejunostomy is common and the standard procedure. This could be possible if use of a laparoscopic purse-string suture along the distal oesophagus were made easy and simple. However, the simple and optimal use of this procedure remains to be developed. METHODS: Between October 2018 and March 2020, 21 consecutive patients with gastric cancer underwent TLTG using the bracket-like suture method (BLSM) for intracorporeal circular-stapled oesophagojejunostomy in our institution. The surgical details and postoperative outcomes were analysed to evaluate this method. RESULTS: The mean operation time was 227.6 ± 13.6 min. The median time for the two-sided purse-string suture was 4 min (range, 3-5 min). It took an average of 11.5 min for the completion of purse-string suture and anvil placement. Tumour-free margins were achieved in 21 patients with a median length of 2.5 cm (range, 2-6 cm) proximal margin. Three patients developed postoperative complications. There was no mortality. During the median follow-up period of 12 months, no anastomosis-related complications were observed. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the method cannot only facilitate safe and easy purse-string creation, using the simplest two-sided suture in a short amount of time by circular marking of the intended transection level for intracorporeal circular-stapled oesophagojejunostomy, but can also be completed by laparoscopic surgeons with basic laparoscopic suturing skills.

RESUMO

Acute attack of dyspnea may be combined with acute cor pulmonale (ACP). Rapid and accurate identification of the etiology of ACP is the key to its diagnosis and treatment. Echocardiography is a better imaging tool in the assessment of right ventricular function. Under the guidance of the theory of cardiopulmonary interaction, ultrasonography can detect lung lesions, which causes ACP. We report the case of a 67-year-old man who received mechanical ventilation for acute respiratory failure. Right ventricular dysfunction was detected by echocardiography. Lung ultrasound showed a high risk of pulmonary embolism. However, obstructive atelectasis should not be ruled out after increasing back area ultrasonography. To avoid pitfalls, combined cardiac and lung ultrasound should be used carefully and strictly.

RESUMO

Hypertrophic growth of the cardiomyocytes is one of the core mechanisms underlying cardiac hypertrophy. However, the mechanism underlying cardiac hypertrophy remains not fully understood. Here we provided evidence that G protein-coupled receptor 39 (GPR39) promotes cardiac hypertrophy via inhibiting AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling. GRP39 expression is overexpressed in hypertrophic hearts of humans and transverse aortic constriction (TAC)-induced cardiac hypertrophy in mice. In neonatal cardiomyocytes, adenovirus-mediated overexpression of GPR39 promoted angiotensin II-induced cardiac hypertrophy, while GPR39 knockdown repressed hypertrophic response. Adeno-associated virus 9-mediated knockdown of GPR39 suppressed TAC-induced decline in fraction shortening and ejection fraction, increase in heart weight and cardiomyocyte size, as well as overexpression of hypertrophic fetal genes. A mechanism study demonstrated that GPR39 repressed the activation of AMPK to activate the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and ribosomal protein S6 kinase ß-1 (S6K1), subsequently promoted de novo protein synthesis. Inhibition of mTOR with rapamycin blocked the effects of GPR39 overexpression on protein synthesis and repressed cardiac hypertrophy. Collectively, our findings demonstrated that GPR39 promoted cardiac hypertrophy via regulating the AMPK-mTOR-S6K1 signaling pathway, and GRP39 can be targeted for the treatment of cardiac hypertrophy.

RESUMO

Apert syndrome is characterized by craniosynostosis, mid-facial hypoplasia, and symmetric syndactyly. Prenatal diagnosis is challenging until the skull and facial anomalies become more pronounced during the third trimester. We present a case in which typical sonographic signs of Apert syndrome were observed after 23 weeks of gestation. Following termination of the pregnancy, both clinical features such as craniofacial abnormalities and syndactyly and cranial 3D-CT images showed high correlation with the previous sonographic findings. Furthermore, genetic analysis revealed a spontaneous mutation, c.755C≥G (p.S252W), in the FGFR2 gene, with this mutation implicated in the etiology of Apert syndrome.

RESUMO

[Zn(dima)(H2O)0.5]·H2O (1), a three-dimensional metal organic framework (MOF) with high porosity was formed by self-assembly of 4,6-di(1 h-imidazol-1-yl)isophthalic acid (H2dima) and Zn2+ ion. Owning to its excellent luminescence and excellent water stability, complex 1 can be used as a super sensitive sensor to detect Fe3+ ions via the behaviors of fluorescence quenching. At the same time, the mechanism for the fluorescence quenching is also further discussed. Furthermore, the prevention effect of the compound on the deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremities (DVT) after lower venous CHIVA surgery was evaluated in vivo. Firstly, the DVT animal models was constructed and the number of platelets was measured with flow cytometry and content of clotting factor IX and anticoagulant factor III was also detected with Lowry method after compound treatment. The molecular docking simulation results indicate that the Zn(II) complex has activity to protein docking pocket with different sizes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The double-tract reconstruction (DTR) could be a preferable option in avoiding the postoperative esophageal reflux and anastomotic stenosis during totally laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy (TLPG). An optimal procedure to achieve the DTR in TLPG remains to be established. METHODS: During March 2018 to April 2019, 15 consecutive patients with gastric cancer in the upper third of the stomach underwent intracorporeal DTR after TLPG at our hospital. The intracorporeal esophagojejunostomy (E-J), gastrojejunostomy (G-J) and jejunojejunostomy (J-J) were, respectively, performed using circular staplers by the Self-Pulling and Holding Purse-String Suture Technique, Intraluminal Poke Technique and U-shaped Parallel Purse-string Suture Technique (Technical Tie-Up). Demographic and clinicopathologic characteristics, perioperative details and postoperative outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean operating time was 216.1 ± 18.2 min. Total time for three anastomoses was 49.8 ± 6.1 min, and the time for E-J, G-J, J-J was 22.4 ± 5.0 min, 13 (range 11-16) min, 14.2 ± 2.8 min, respectively. The median proximal and distal resection margins were 2.5 (range 2-4) cm and 6 (range 5-7) cm, respectively, which were all tumor-free in 15 patients. No major complications and mortality occurred. During the median follow-up period of 14 months (range 7 to 20.5 months), there were no postoperative anastomosis-related complications observed, such as anastomotic bleeding, leakage or stenosis. No patients complained the symptoms indicating esophageal reflux and remnant gastritis. CONCLUSIONS: Predominant classic circular-stapled double-tract reconstruction is safe, feasible and time-saving in TLPG by the technical tie-up.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy is being increasingly performed. However, an optimal procedure to achieve intracorporeal gastrojejunostomy and jejunojejunostomy for Roux-en-Y reconstruction after laparoscopic distal gastrectomy remains to be established. Compared with the simple and preferable circular-stapled Roux-en-Y reconstruction in open gastrectomy, application of intracorporeal circular-stapled gastrojejunostomy and jejunojejunostomy of Roux-en-Y reconstruction during laparoscopic distal gastrectomy have been limited (no report of intracorporeal circular-stapled jejunojejunostomy) because of the difficulties of intracorporeal purse-string suture and anvil placement. To address these problems, a simple and safe intraluminal poke technique of universal surgical concept and procedure was introduced and evaluated. METHODS: Between March 2018 and August 2018, 24 consecutive patients with gastric cancer underwent totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy in our hospital. Roux-en-Y reconstruction of intracorporeal circular-stapled gastrojejunostomy and jejunojejunostomy with the intraluminal poke technique was performed in all patients. Demographic and clinicopathologic characteristics, perioperative details and postoperative outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean operative time was 203.6±26.2min, both proximal and distal tumor-free margins were achieved in all patients. The time for anvil placement at stomach and intestine was 5.9±1.3min and 3.9±0.7min, respectively. Intracorporeal gastrojejunostomy and jejunojejunostomy were successively completed following anvil placement with no any anastomosis-related sutures. There were 5 postoperative complications. Morbidities included pancreas fistula (n=1), stasis (n=2), atelectasis (n=1), pneumonia (n=1). These all patients recovered after conservative treatment. No postoperative anastomosis-related complications, such as anastomotic bleeding and leakage, or stenosis occurred during the median follow-up of 6.5 months. CONCLUSION: The initial results suggest that the technique allowing easy and common anvil placement at stomach and intestine may be a simple, safe, preferable and time-saving procedure to accomplish intracorporeal circular-stapled gastrojejunostomy and jejunojejunostomy of Roux-en-Y reconstruction in totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy as open surgery.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Intracorporeal anastomoses in totally laparoscopic gastrectomy (TLG) remain technical challenges to many surgeons, although the intracorporeal jejunojejunal or gastrojejunal anastomosis is an essential procedure during TLG. Standardized, reproducible and simple circular-stapled anastomosis in open gastrectomy is limited in TLG due to the difficulties of intracorporeal purse-string suture or anvil placement. An optimal procedure for intracorporeal anastomosis in TLG remains to be established. METHODS: Between February 2018 and January 2019, 31 consecutive patients with gastric cancer underwent totally laparoscopic total gastrectomy (TLTG) or totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (TLDG) using the novel u-shaped parallel purse-string suture technique along the jejunum for anvil placement. The intracorporeal circular-stapled jejunojejunostomy of Roux-en-Y reconstruction in TLTG and gastrojejunostomy of Billroth II in TLDG were, respectively, performed. RESULTS: The total mean ± SD operative time was 214.7 ± 48.6 minutes. The time required for purse-string suture and anvil placement was 2.3 ± 0.5 and 4.4 ± 1.1 minutes, respectively. There were no instances of postoperative jejunojejunal or gastrojejunal anastomosis-related complications observed during the median follow-up period of 5.5 months. CONCLUSIONS: The novel procedure conceptionally and technically changes the conventional circular-shaped purse-string suture into a much simpler way, u-shaped parallel purse-string suture. This could be the simplest published intracorporeal pure-string suture technique.

RESUMO

Evidence of the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index as an independent predictor of arterial stiffness in stage 1 hypertension patients is scarce. This study aimed to explore the association between TyG index and arterial stiffness in this population. A total of 1041 individuals from 32 centers with normal/elevated blood pressure (BP, <130/80 mmHg; 345 men (33%); median age, 37 years) and 585 stage 1 hypertension patients (BP ≥130/80 and <140/90 mmHg; 305 men (52%); median age, 47 years) were prospectively enrolled. Arterial stiffness was determined by measuring carotid ultrafast pulse-wave velocity (ufPWV). TyG index was calculated as ln (fasting triglyceride (TG) × fasting blood glucose/2). Patients with a higher TyG index tended to have higher ufPWV. The TyG index was positively associated with ufPWV at the end of systole in stage 1 hypertension patients after adjusting for confounding factors (ß for per unit .48), and restricted cubic spline analysis confirmed a linear association. Subgroup analyses in terms of age, sex, and body mass index yielded similar results. However, no significant relationship was observed between the TyG index and ufPWV in the population with normal/elevated BP. The fully adjusted ß between ufPWV and the TyG index was higher than the TG/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, TG, and pulse pressure. In conclusion, patients with a higher TyG index had greater arterial stiffness, and the TyG index independently and positively correlated with arterial stiffness in stage 1 hypertension patients. The TyG index may provide a simple and reliable marker to monitor arterial stiffness in hypertensive patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In the past ten years, liver biopsies have been used as a method to accurately diagnose the stage of fibrosis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether body position and exercise affect the measurement of liver Young's modulus of healthy volunteers by real-time shear wave elastography (RT-SWE). METHODS: RT-SWE was used to measure liver Young's modulus in the supine and left lateral positions of 70 healthy volunteers at rest and measure the liver Young's modulus in the lying position before exercise, and at zero, five, and ten minutes of rest after exercise. RESULTS: The liver Young's modulus in the left lateral position was significantly higher than in the supine position (P< 0.05), and the measured value in the supine position was more stable than the left lateral position. The liver Young's modulus measured at zero minutes after exercise was significantly higher than that measured before exercise (P< 0.05). The liver Young's modulus measured at five minutes after exercise was significantly higher than that measured at zero minutes after exercise (P<0.05) and was not statistically different from the measured value before exercise (P> 0.05). The liver Young's modulus measured at ten minutes after exercise was significantly higher from that measured at zero minutes after exercise (P< 0.05) and was not statistically different from the measured value at five minutes after exercise (P> 0.05). CONCLUSION: Body position and exercise have a significant impact on the measurement of liver Young's modulus. It is recommended that the examinees take a supine position during the measurement, and measurement should be conducted at least ten minutes after exercise.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to explore the value of high-resolution ultrasound combined with shear-wave elastography (SWE) in measuring skin thickness in patients with localized scleroderma (LS). Fifty patients with LS diagnosed by pathology in the hospital were selected as the research object, with a total of 96 lesions. Healthy people (50 cases) in the same period were selected as the control group. The skin thickness of the abdomen, chest, and left finger of the two groups was compared. The traditional nonlocal means (NLM) algorithm was improved by changing the Euclidean distance and introducing a cosine function, which was applied to the ultrasonic imaging intelligent diagnosis of patients with localized scleroderma. SWE imaging was evaluated, and the results demonstrated that LS lesion edema stage accounted for 7.29%, hardening stage occupied 43.75%, and the proportion of atrophy stage reached 48.96%. When the size of shell was 1 mm, maximum elastic modulus (E max) was 0.984, mean of elastic modulus (Emean) was 0.926, and electro-static discharge (Esd) was 0.965. When the size of shell was 2 mm, the elastic moduli around lesions were as follows: Emax was 0.998, Emean was 0.968, and Esd was 0.997. By comparing the skin thickness of the abdomen, chest, and left finger, it was found that there was a significant difference between the LS group and the control group (P < 0.05). When the shell was 2 mm, the effect of sensitivity specificity on SWE imaging was better than that when the shell was 1 mm. In summary, the improved NLM algorithm showed excellent denoising effects on the ultrasonic images of LS patients. Besides, it could assist clinicians in ultrasonic imaging diagnosis for LS patients and effectively improve the diagnostic accuracy of diseases.

RESUMO

AIM: Uterine leiomyoma is the most common benign tumor of female genitalia, and the incidence is rising gradually. This study explores the mechanism of miR-29 and STAT3 signaling pathways on uterine leiomyoma. METHODS: GSE64763 and GSE5244 datasets were downloaded. Enrichment analyses were performed in GSE64763. PPI network was constructed, and the significant module was identified. Uterine leiomyoma cell lines were divided into NC, miR-29 mimic, anti-NC, and miR-29 inhibitor groups. Plate clone formation and Transwell assays detected the proliferation, invasion, and migration of cells. The expression levels of STAT3, proliferation, EMT, invasion-associated proteins were determined by Western blotting. RESULTS: Differently expressed genes were mainly enriched in positive regulation of cell migration and gene expression, cell proliferation. Through GSEA, JAK-STAT is a significantly correlated enrichment pathway. A Venn diagram was drawn to identify the common miRNA (miR-29-3p). miR-29 inhibitors promoted protein expression of STAT-3, Cyclin D1, and c-Myc compared with the anti-NC control (P < 0.01), and miR-29 inhibitors promoted cell proliferation in uterine leiomyoma cells (P < 0.05). Furthermore, miR-29 inhibitors promoted the protein expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 (P < 0.01), and EMT promoting proteins N-cadherin, snail, vimentin, and Transwell assay showed that miR-29 inhibitors promoted cell migration in uterine leiomyoma (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: High expression of miR-29 could inhibit cell proliferation, invasion, and metastasis in uterine leiomyoma, which might be related to the inhibition of the STAT3 signaling pathway, and could provide a novel target for the treatment of uterine leiomyoma.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: MI is defined by the presence of myocardial necrosis, which is caused by acute and persistent ischemia and hypoxia of the coronary artery. In recent years, its incidence rate has been on the rise in China. METHODS: GSE34198, GSE97320 and GSE141512 datasets were download for DEG analysis. KEGG pathway analysis, GO analysis, GSEA and PPI network construction were performed. Later, target genes of candidate miRNAs were predicted. Next, echocardiography was conducted to detect the effects of miR-29 on left ventricular structure and cardiac function in vivo, and H&E staining was adopted to study the effects of miR-29 on angiogenesis and fibrosis in vivo. Furthermore, Western blotting was employed to investigate the effects of miR-29 inhibition on the expressions of proteins related to the PI3K\mTOR\ HIF-1α\VEGF pathway. RESULTS: There were 162 DEGs involved in MI. GO analysis revealed that inflammatory responses, negative regulation of apoptosis and innate immune response were the main enriched biological processes. KEGG analysis manifested that DEGs were mainly enriched in the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, and GSEA demonstrated that they were mainly enriched in the PI3K/Akt/mTOR, HIF and VEGF pathways. Moreover, target gene prediction showed that miR-29 was lowly expressed in MI. According to Masson's trichrome staining, miR-29 inhibition promoted angiogenesis, reduced fibrosis, and increased the protein expressions of p-PI3K, p-mTOR, HIF-1α, and VEGF. CONCLUSIONS: MiR-29 may play an important role in the growth and development of MI. After inhibition of miR-29, the PI3K/mTOR/HIF-1α/VEGF pathway is activated to alleviate MI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: miR-29a plays a vital role in AS, but the relationship between the miR-29a-targeted PI3K signaling pathway and AS remains unclear. Therefore, this study was carried out. METHODS: Gene expression profiles from the GEO database containing AS samples were analyzed. ApoE-/- mice and RAW264.7 cells were treated with miR-29a negative control (NC), miR-29a mimic and miR-29a inhibitor to establish the AS model. Then MOVAT staining, TEM, Western blotting, and immunofluorescence staining were adopted for testing target proteins. RESULTS: DEGs were identified from GSE137578, GSE132651, GSE113969, GSE43292, and GSE97210 datasets. It was found that there were targeted binding sites between miR-29a and PIK3CA. Besides, GO and KEGG analysis demonstrated that autophagy was an enriched pathway in AS. Later, PPI network was depicted, and hub genes were then determined. The results revealed that miR-29a suppressed the areas of plaques and lesional macrophages, but had no impact on VSMCs. TEM results showed the organelles pyknosis of lesional macrophages damaged morphological changes. Furthermore, miR-29a amplified the M2-like macrophages but suppressed the polarization of M1-like macrophages in atherosclerotic plaques. According to mouse and RAW 264.7 cell experiments, miR-29a significantly inhibited the protein expressions of PI3K, p-PI3K, p-AKT, and p-mTOR, which were consistent with the increased expressions of autophagy-related proteins, Beclin 1 and LC3II. However, the miR-29a suppression exhibited the contrary results. CONCLUSION: MiR-29a elevation induces the increase of autophagy by down-regulating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway in the progression of AS, indicating that miR-29a is a novel therapeutic strategy for AS.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer and has a high recurrence rate. Accurate prediction of recurrence risk is urgently required for tailoring personalized treatment programs for individual HCC patients in advance. In this study, we analyzed a gene expression dataset from an HCC cohort with 247 samples and identified five genes including ENY2, GPAA1, NDUFA4L2, NEDD9, and NRP1 as the variables for the prediction of HCC recurrence, especially the early recurrence. The Cox model and risks score were validated in two public HCC cohorts (GSE76427 and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA)) and one cohort from Huashan Hospital, which included a total of 641 samples. Moreover, the multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that the risk score could serve as an independent prognostic factor in the prediction of HCC recurrence. In addition, we found that ENY2, GPAA1, and NDUFA4L2 were significantly upregulated in HCC of the two validation cohorts, and ENY2 had significantly higher expression levels than another four genes in malignant cells, suggesting that ENY2 might play key roles in malignant cells. The cell line analysis revealed that ENY2 could promote cell cycle progression, cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. The functional analysis of the genes correlated with ENY2 revealed that ENY2 might be involved in telomere maintenance, one of the fundamental hallmarks of cancer. In conclusion, our data indicate that ENY2 may regulate the malignant phenotypes of HCC via activating telomere maintenance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the feasibility of HeartModel A.I. (HM) three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) to assess left ventricular function and discover suitable border parameter settings. METHODS: A total of 113 patients that underwent echocardiography in our hospital were eligible for inclusion. The HM 3DE (HM method) and conventional 3DE (3D method) were used to analyze echocardiography images. The HM was set to different border settings (end-diastolic [ED] and end-systolic [ES] settings) to assess different left ventricular systolic function parameters including left ventricular end diastolic volume (LVEDV), left ventricular end systolic volume (LVESV), and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and left ventricular diastolic function parameters including maximal left atrium volume (LAVMAX). All of these parameters were evaluated using the HM method and then compared with the 3D method. RESULTS: The differences in LVEDV, LVESV, and LVEF measured with different HM border settings were statistically significant (P<0.05) and were strongly correlated with the 3D method. For LVEF, the reading using the HM method with ED and ES = 70 and 30 showed the best agreement with the 3D method, and the difference in the readings was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). For LVEDV and LVESV, the reading using the HM method with ED and ES = 40 and 20 showed the best agreement with the 3D method, but the difference in the readings was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The measurements taken using the HM method were more reproducible than those taken using the 3D method (P<0.05). The measurement time when using the HM method was significantly less than the 3D method (P<0.05). In terms of LAVMAX, the correlation between the HM and 3D methods was strong, but the requirements for agreement were not satisfied. CONCLUSION: Evaluation of the left ventricular function using HM 3DE is feasible, saves time, and is reproducible. To assess the left ventricular function, the border parameter setting of ED and ES = 70 and 30 provided the best fit for the Chinese population.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Eccrine spiradenoma (ES) is a rare benign skin adnexal tumor originating from eccrine sweat glands. The features of ES on ultrasonography (US) have received little attention. Therefore, we report the sonographic findings in a case of an ES that originated from the abdominal wall and discuss the previously reported cases. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of a painful nodule on the right side of her abdominal wall of 1-year duration. DIAGNOSES: The mass on the right side of abdominal wall was diagnosed as ES by histopathological examination. INTERVENTIONS: The patient subsequently underwent total excision of the mass. OUTCOMES: The patient recovered well and had no complications during the 1-year follow-up. LESSONS: As eccrine spiradenoma (ES) is rare and most of the tumors are excised without prior imaging studies. Little is known regarding the features of ES on ultrasonography (US). Familiarizing with the clinical and US features of this rare tumor may increase awareness of the disease among sonographers and clinicians.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ultrafast ultrasound imaging has been demonstrated to be an effective method to evaluate carotid stiffness through carotid pulse-wave velocity (PWV) with high reproducibility, but a lack of reference values has precluded its widespread use in clinical practice. The aims of this study were to establish reference values of PWV for ultrafast ultrasound imaging in a prospective, multicenter, population-based cohort study and to investigate the main determinants of carotid PWV. METHODS: A total of 1,544 healthy Han Chinese volunteers (581 men [38%]; age range, 18-95 years) were enrolled from 32 collaborating laboratories in China. The participants were categorized by age, blood pressure (BP), and body mass index (BMI). Basic clinical parameters and carotid PWV at the beginning of systole (BS) and at end-systole (ES) were measured using ultrafast ultrasound imaging techniques. RESULTS: PWV at both BS and ES was significantly higher in the left carotid artery than in the right carotid artery. PWV at BS was significantly higher in men than in women; however, no significant difference was noted in PWV at ES between men and women. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that age, BP, and BMI were independently correlated with PWV at both BS and ES. PWV at BS and ES progressively increased with increases in age, BP, and BMI. Furthermore, age- and sex-specific reference values of carotid PWV for ultrafast ultrasound imaging were established. CONCLUSIONS: Reference values of carotid PWV for ultrafast ultrasound imaging, stratified by sex and age, were determined for the first time. Age, BP, and BMI were the dominant determinants of carotid PWV for ultrafast ultrasound imaging, which should be considered in clinical practice for assessing arterial stiffness.
