RESUMO

This Letter demonstrates optical vortex lattices based on holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC) films. The fabrication method uses a phase-only reflective spatial light modulator with numerically calculated phase profiles loaded on it to simplify multi-helical-wave interference. The beam profiles of the diffraction beams are simulated using the Fourier transform and compared with experimental results. The topological charges of the 1st-order diffraction beams reconstructed from the HPDLC films are examined using a Michelson interferometer.

RESUMO

All drivers have their own distinct driving habits, and usually hold and operate the steering wheel differently in different driving scenarios. In this study, we proposed a novel Gaussian mixture model (GMM)-based method that can improve the traditional GMM in modeling driving behavior. This new method can be applied to build a better driver authentication system based on the accelerometer and orientation sensor of a smartwatch. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, we created an experimental system that analyzes driving behavior using the built-in sensors of a smartwatch. The experimental results for driver authentication-an equal error rate (EER) of 4.62% in the simulated environment and an EER of 7.86% in the real-traffic environment-confirm the feasibility of this approach.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Sepsis is characterized by a dysregulated host response to infection that leads to multiple organ dysfunction and often complicated with metabolic acidosis. However, the associations between serum total carbon dioxide level (TCO2) and long-term clinical outcomes in sepsis survivors remains unknown. METHODS: A total of 7212 sepsis survivors aged ≥ 20 years who were discharged from January  1, 2008 to December 31, 2018 were included in our analyses. The sepsis survivors were further divided into high TCO2 (≥ 18 mmol/L) and low TCO2 (< 18 mmol/L) groups, comprising 5023 and 2189 patients, respectively. The following outcomes of interest were included: all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, hospitalization for heart failure, ventricular arrhythmia, and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). RESULTS: After propensity score matching, the low TCO2 group was at higher risks of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR] 1.28, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.18-1.39), myocardial infarction (HR 1.83, 95% CI 1.39-2.43), and ESRD (HR 1.38, 95% CI 1.16-1.64) than the high TCO2 group. The results remained similar after considering death as a competing risk. CONCLUSION: Patients discharged from hospitalization for sepsis have higher risks of worse long-term clinical outcomes. Physicians may need to pay more attention to sepsis survivors whose TCO2 was low.

RESUMO

Long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) can lead to detrimental changes in peritoneal membrane function, which may be related to the accumulation of glucose degradation products. A previous study demonstrated that 6 months of far-infrared (FIR) therapy may decrease glucose degradation products in PD dialysate. Due to limited literature on this matter, this study aims to investigate the effect of FIR therapy on the peritoneal membrane transport characteristics of PD patients. Patients were grouped according to baseline peritoneal transport status: lower transporters (low and low-average) and higher transporters (high-average and high). Both groups underwent 40 min of FIR therapy twice daily for 1 year. In lower transporters, FIR therapy increased weekly dialysate creatinine clearance (6.91 L/wk/1.73 m2; p = 0.04) and D/P creatinine (0.05; p = 0.01). In higher transporters, FIR therapy decreased D/P creatinine (-0.05; p = 0.01) and increased D/D0 glucose (0.05; p = 0.006). Fifty percent of high transporter patients shifted to high-average status after FIR therapy. FIR therapy may decrease D/P creatinine for patients in the higher transporter group and cause high transporters to shift to high-average status, which suggests the potential of FIR therapy in improving peritoneal membrane function in PD patients.

RESUMO

In this study, we generate various complex beams carrying angular momentum (AM) by using a programmable beam shaping system to mimic typical q-plates. When a circularly polarized wave is incident onto the system, the emerging beam reverses its spin handedness and obtains a spatial phase factor. This phase factor can be engineered by designing a computer-generated hologram (CGH) and applying it to a spatial light modulator (SLM) to produce a beam with controllable spatially distributed orbital angular momentum (OAM) density. To determine the properties of the generated fields, we combine digital holography (DH) with the beam shaping system to yield visualizations of the beam intensity, phase, and AM distributions over the transverse plane at different propagation distances. Comparisons of the theoretically and experimentally obtained results show good qualitative agreement. This study advances our understanding and interpretation of AM characteristics produced by a programmable q-plate-like system.

RESUMO

We present a simple and flexible method to generate various vectorial vortex beams (VVBs) with a Pancharatnam phase based on the scheme of double reflections from a single liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM). In this configuration, VVBs are constructed by the superposition of two orthogonally polarized orbital angular momentum (OAM) eigenstates. To verify the optical properties of the generated beams, Stokes polarimetry is developed to measure the states of polarization (SOP) over the transverse plane, while a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor is used to measure the OAM charge of beams. It is shown that both the simulated and the experimental results are in good qualitative agreement. In addition, polarization patterns and OAM charges of generated beams can be controlled independently using the proposed method.
