RESUMO

Smart hydrogels responsive to external stimuli are promising for various applications such as soft robotics and smart devices. High mechanical strength and fast response rate are particularly important for the construction of hydrogel actuators. Herein, tough hydrogels with rapid response rates are synthesized using vinyl-functionalized poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgels as macro-crosslinkers and N-isopropylacrylamide as monomers. The compression strength of the obtained PNIPAM hydrogels is up to 7.13 MPa. The response rate of the microgel-crosslinked hydrogels is significantly enhanced compared with conventional chemically crosslinked PNIPAM hydrogels. The mechanical strength and response rate of hydrogels can be adjusted by varying the proportion of monomers and crosslinkers. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the PNIPAM hydrogels could be tuned by copolymerizing with ionic monomer sodium methacrylate. Thermo-responsive bilayer hydrogels are fabricated using PINPAM hydrogels with different LCSTs via a layer-by-layer method. The thermo-responsive fast swelling and shrinking properties of the two layers endow the bilayer hydrogel with anisotropic structures and asymmetric response characteristics, allowing the hydrogel to respond rapidly. The bilayer hydrogels are fabricated into clamps to grab small objects and flowers that mimicked the closure of petals, and it shows great application prospects in the field of actuators.

Invisible aligners have been widely used in orthodontic treatment but still present issues with plaque formation and oral mucosa abrasion, which can lead to complicated oral diseases. To address these issues, hydrophilic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA) coatings with lubricating, antifouling, and antiadhesive properties have been developed on the aligner materials (i.e., polyethylene terephthalate glycol, PETG) via a simple and feasible glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-assisted coating strategy. Poly(GMA-co-SBMA) is grafted onto the aminated PETG surface via the ring-opening reaction of GMA (i.e., "grafting to" approach to obtain G-co-S coating), or a polySBMA layer is formed on the GMA-grafted PETG surface via free radical polymerization (i.e., "grafting from" approach to obtain G-g-S coating). The G-co-S and G-g-S coatings significantly reduce the friction coefficient of PETG surface. Protein adsorption, bacterial adhesion, and biofilm formation on the G-co-S- and G-g-S-coated surfaces are significantly inhibited. The performance of the coatings remains stable after storage in air or artificial saliva for 2 weeks. Both coatings demonstrate good biocompatibility in vitro and is not caused irritation to the oral mucosa of rats in vivo over 2 weeks. This study proposes a promising strategy for the development of invisible aligners with improved performance, which is beneficial for oral health treatment.

The persistent combustion of fossil fuels has resulted in a widespread greenhouse effect attributable to the continual elevation of carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere. Recent research indicates that utilizing CO2 as a pyrolysis gasification medium diminishes CO2 emissions and concurrently augments the value of the resultant pyrolysis gasification products. This paper reviews recent advancements in the pyrolysis gasification of organic solid wastes under a CO2 atmosphere. Meanwhile, the mechanisms of CO2 influence in the pyrolysis and gasification processes were also discussed. In comparison to noble gases, CO2 exhibits reactivity with char at≥710 °C, resulting in additional mass loss of the sample. In addition, CO2 was able to increase the specific surface area and stability of biochar and reduce biooil toxicity by lowering the content of cyclic compounds in the biooil, while CO2 was able to react with GPRs with some volatile products (e.g., light hydrocarbons) to increase biogas yield. Finally, CO2 also prevents catalyst deactivation by reducing secondary coke formation. We also recommend directing future attention toward utilizing unpurified CO2 in pyrolysis and gasification. This review aims to expand the utilization of CO2 and advocate for applying pyrolysis gasification products.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) has demonstrated great potential in predicting the expression of tumor cell proliferation and apoptosis indexes. PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of four region of interest (ROI) methods on interobserver variability and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values and to examine the correlation of ADC values with Ki-67, Bcl-2, and P53 labeling indexes (LIs) in a murine model of fibrosarcoma. STUDY TYPE: Prospective, animal model. ANIMAL MODEL: A total of 22 female BALB/c mice bearing intramuscular fibrosarcoma xenografts. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: A 3.0 T/T1-weighted fast spin-echo (FSE), T2-weighted fast relaxation fast spin-echo, and DWI PROPELLER FSE sequences. ASSESSMENT: Four radiologists measured ADC values using four ROI methods (oval, freehand, small-sample, and whole-volume). Immunohistochemical assessment of Ki-67, Bcl-2, and P53 LIs was performed. STATISTICAL TESTS: Interclass correlation coefficient (ICC), one-way analysis of variance followed by LSD-t post hoc analysis, and Pearson correlation test were performed. The statistical threshold was defined as a P-value of <0.05. RESULTS: All ROI methods for ADC measurements showed excellent interobserver agreement (ICC range, 0.832-0.986). The ADC values demonstrated significant differences among the four ROI methods. The ADC values for oval, freehand, small-sample, and whole-volume ROI methods showed a moderately negative correlation with Ki-67 (r = -0.623; r = -0.629; r = -0.642, and r = -0.431) and Bcl-2 (r = -0.590; r = -0.597; r = -0.659, and r = -0.425) LIs, but no correlation with P53 LI (r = 0.364, P = 0.104; r = 0.350, P = 0.120; r = 0.379, P = 0.091; r = 0.390, P = 0.080). DATA CONCLUSION: The ADC value can be used to evaluate cell proliferation and apoptosis indexes in a murine model of fibrosarcoma, employing the small-sample ROI as a reliable method. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 1 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 3.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the correlation between intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) parameters and microvessel architecture (microvessel density (MVD), vasculogenic mimicry (VM), and pericyte coverage index (PCI)) in an orthotopic murine model of rhabdomyosarcoma. METHODS: The murine model was established by injecting rhabdomyosarcoma-derived (RD) cells into the muscle. Nude mice underwent routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and IVIM examinations with ten b values (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, and 2000 s/mm2). D, D*, and f values were calculated with the ADW4.7 workstation. MRI images and pathological slices were directly compared to ensure that radiology parameters accurately reflect pathology. MVD, VM, PCI, and cellularity were obtained by histological analysis. The correlations were assessed between IVIM parameters (D, D*, f, and fD* values) and pathological markers (MVD, VM, PCI, and cellularity). RESULTS: The average of D, D*, f, and fD* values were 0.55 ± 0.07 × 10-3 mm2/s, 5.25 ± 0.73 × 10-3 mm2/s, 13.39 ± 7.68%, and 0.73 ± 0.49 × 10-3 mm2/s, respectively. The average of MVD, VM, PCI, and cellularity were 41.91 ± 10.98, 1.16 ± 0.83, 0.49 ± 0.18, and 39.15 ± 9.00%. D*, f, and fD* values showed a positive correlation with MVD separately, while the D value did not correlate with MVD. D value negatively correlated to VM moderately, and other parameters did not associate with VM. D* and fD* values were positively correlated with PCI, but no correlation was observed between other parameters and PCI. CONCLUSIONS: IVIM may evaluate the tumor microvessel architecture. D*, f, and fD* may reflect the endothelial lining blood vessel; D could indirectly reflect the VM; D* and fD* could reflect PCI(the normal degree of the tumor blood vessel). CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: An intravoxel incoherent motion may be useful in assessing rhabdomyosarcoma microvessel structure to predict the target and effectiveness of anti-angiogenic therapy. KEY POINTS: • IVIM may be used to evaluate the tumor microvessel architecture in the mouse rhabdomyosarcoma model. • The MRI-pathology control method achieves correspondence between MRI slices and pathology slices, which ensures the consistency of the ROI of MRI and the pathology observation region.

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between DWI, intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM), and hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) expression in a nude mouse model of rhabdomyosarcoma based on imaging and pathological comparisons. METHODS: Human rhabdomyosarcoma-derived (RD) cells were inoculated into the right thigh muscle of 20 BALB/c female nude mice. Mice were imaged using 3.0 Tesla MRI system. T1 -weighted imaging, T2 -weighted imaging, DWI, and IVIM images were obtained. ADW4.7 (GE Healthcare, ChicagoAQ34, IL, USA) was used for image processing of ADC, Dslow , Dfast , and f values. All parameter values were independently analyzed by 2 observers. Immunohistochemistry of HIF-1α was performed. We used a specific image-pathology comparison method to ensure correct overlap between the image plane and the pathological section. Mann-Whitney U test or independent sample t test, Pearson or Spearman correlation test, the intragroup correlation coefficient, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and receiver operating characteristic curve were used. The correlation between DWI and intravoxel incoherent motion parameter values and HIF-1α expression was determined. RESULTS: There were 10 mice in the low-expression group and 7 in the high-expression group. The ADC and Dslow values were negatively correlated with HIF-1α with correlation coefficients of -0.491 and - 0.702 (P = 0.045 and 0.002). The f value positively correlated with HIF-1α expression (r = 0.485, P = 0.048). ADC, Dslow , and f were significantly different between the high-HIF-1α expression tumors and the low-HIF-1α expression tumors. ADC showed the best predictive performance among all parameters (area under the curve = 0.652, sensitivity = 83.3%, specificity = 63.6%). CONCLUSION: The parameter values of DWI and intravoxel incoherent motion can be used to evaluate the expression of HIF-1α in rhabdomyosarcoma. ADC, Dslow , and f value showed correlation with the expression of HIF-1α.

BACKGROUND: High cellularity and abnormal interstitial structures are some of the unfavorable factors that affect the treatment outcomes and survival of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) patients. PURPOSE: To explore the correlation between diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) with quantitative histopathologic features in a murine model of RMS. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. ANIMAL MODEL: Murine model of RMS (31 female BALB/c nude mice). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3.0 T; fast spin-echo (FSE) T1-weighted imaging, fast relaxation fast spin-echo (FRFSE) T2-weighted imaging, DWI PROPELLER FSE imaging sequence, and IVIM echo planar imaging sequence; 10 different b-values (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, and 1200 s/mm2 ). ASSESSMENT: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed after 30-45 days of implantation. The following MRI parameters were calculated: apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), pure diffusion coefficient (D), pseudo-diffusion coefficient (D*), and perfusion fraction (f). Histopathologic features, which contained nuclear, cytoplasmic, and stromal fractions, and the nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio within the tumor were measured using image-based segmentation. STATISTICAL TESTS: Pearson's correlation, multiple linear regression analysis, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis were performed. A P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The ADC value showed moderate negative correlation with nuclear fraction (r = -0.540), and moderate positive correlation with stroma fraction (r = 0.474). The D value showed moderate negative correlation with nuclear fraction (r = -0.491), and moderate positive correlation with stroma fraction (r = 0.421). The f value showed a moderate negative correlation with stroma fraction (r = -0.423). The D value showed the best diagnostic ability. The optimal cut-off D value of 0.460 was associated with 77.8% sensitivity and 68.2% specificity (area under the curve, 0.747). DATA CONCLUSION: The ADC, D, and f values obtained from DWI and IVIM images showed moderate correlation with the quantitative histopathologic features in a murine model of RMS. Over the past two decades, considerable efforts have been made to develop non-invasive methods for determining tumor grade or surrogates for predicting the biological behavior, aiding early treatment decisions, and providing prognostic information. The development of new imaging tools, such as diffusion-weighted imaging, diffusion kurtosis imaging, perfusion imaging, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy have provided leverage in the diagnosis of soft tissue sarcomas. Artificial intelligence is a new technology used to study and simulate human thinking and abilities, which can extract and analyze advanced and quantitative image features from medical images with high throughput for an in-depth characterization of the spatial heterogeneity of tumor tissues. This article reviews the current imaging modalities used to predict the histopathological grade of soft tissue sarcomas and highlights the advantages and limitations of each modality. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of nocturnal erectile function and functional connectivity (FC) of bilateral thalami in insomniac ED patients with yin deficiency and fire syndrome. METHODS: We enrolled 30 healthy controls and 87 ED patients with yin deficiency and fire syndrome, 41 with and the other 46 without insomnia. Using IIEF-5 and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), we evaluated the nocturnal erectile function and sleep quality of the patients and compared the clinical indicators between the two groups. Then we collected and preprocessed the MRI data on the cerebral function of the 15 ED patients with insomnia, another 15 without insomnia and the 30 healthy controls. With the thalamus as the region of interest (ROI), we calculated and compared the FC values of brain regions between the ED patients (with or without insomnia) and healthy controls, and corrected the results for multiple comparisons using the AlphaSim method. RESULTS: Compared with the patients without insomnia, those with insomnia had a lower duration of erectile episode and tumescence and rigidity activity units in the tip of the penis. With the left thalamus as the ROI, the right middle frontal gyrus and inferior parietal were shown to be the differential brain regions among the three groups. Compared with the healthy controls, the patients without insomnia showed decreased FC values between the left thalamus and left orbital part of the middle frontal gyrus, insula, putamen and right thalamus, while those with insomnia exhibited decreased FC values between the left thalamus and bilateral middle frontal gyri, inferior parietal, calcarine fissure, parahippocampal gyrus, left superior parietal gyrus, right precuneus and inferior temporal gyrus, and they also exhibited decreased FC values between the left thalamus and middle frontal gyrus in comparison with those without insomnia. With the right thalamus as the ROI, the left medial superior frontal gyrus, bilateral calcarine fissure and right thalamus were found to be the differential brain regions among the three groups. Compared with the healthy controls, the patients without insomnia showed decreased FC values between the right thalamus (including the right thalamus itself) and left medial orbital superior frontal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus (temporal pole), middle temporal gyrus, insula and right orbital part of the inferior frontal gyrus, while those with insomnia manifested decreased FC values between the right thalamus and middle frontal gyrus, inferior parietal, left superior parietal gyrus and calcarine fissure, and they also manifested increased FC values between the right thalamus and medial superior frontal gyrus, and decreased FC values between the right thalamus and left calcarine fissure in comparison with those without insomnia. CONCLUSION: ED patients with insomnia have more serious clinical symptoms, with FC changes in the thalamocortical loop, which might be the pathological mechanisms of ED with insomnia.

Fluorescent in blue light (FLU) is a negative regulator involved in dark repression of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) synthesis and interacts with glutamyl-tRNA reductase (GluTR), the rate-limiting enzyme of tetrapyrrole biosynthesis. In this study, we investigated FLU's regulatory function in light-exposed FLU-overexpressing (FLUOE) Arabidopsis lines and under fluctuating light intensities in wild-type (WT) and flu seedlings. FLUOE lines suppress ALA synthesis in the light, resulting in reduced chlorophyll content, but more strongly in low and high light than in medium growth light. This situation indicates that FLU's impact on chlorophyll biosynthesis depends on light intensity. FLU overexpressors contain strongly increased amounts of mainly membrane-associated GluTR. These findings correlate with FLU-dependent localization of GluTR to plastidic membranes and concomitant inhibition, such that only the soluble GluTR fraction is active. The overaccumulation of membrane-associated GluTR indicates that FLU binding enhances GluTR stability. Interestingly, under fluctuating light, the leaves of flu mutants contain less chlorophyll compared with WT and become necrotic. We propose that FLU is basically required for fine-tuned ALA synthesis. FLU not only mediates dark repression of ALA synthesis, but functions also to control balanced ALA synthesis under variable light intensities to ensure the adequate supply of chlorophyll.

A Nocardia-like actinobacterial strain, designated YIM TG2190T, was isolated from rhizosphere soil of Psammosilene tunicoides collected from Gejiu, Yunnan province, China. The cells of strain YIM TG2190T were observed to be Gram-stain positive and non-motile. The strain forms extensively branched substrate mycelia that fragments into rod-shaped elements. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain YIM TG2190T is closely related to Nocardia nova (97.5%), Nocardia jiangxiensis (97.1%) and Nocardia miyunensis (96.8%). Growth occurs at 4-30 °C (optimum 28 °C), pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum pH 7.0) and the strain can tolerate NaCl (w/v) up to 3% (optimum 0-1%). The cell walls were found to contain meso-diaminopimelic acid. The whole-cell sugars were identified as glucose, mannose, ribose, galactose, arabinose and fucose. The polar lipids were identified as diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol mannosides, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified phospholipid. The menaquinones detected were MK-9 (H2) and MK-8 (H4). The major fatty acids (> 5%) were found to be C16:0 (33.9%), summed feature 3 (21.7%), C18:0 10-methyl TBSA (13.7%) and C18:1ω9c (7.0%). The DNA G+C content was determined to be 61.1 mol%. DNA-DNA relatedness between the strain YIM TG2190T and N. nova CGMCC 4.1705T, N. jiangxiensis CGMCC 4.1905T and N. miyunensis CGMCC 4.1904T were 46.9 ± 2.6, 36.8 ± 1.3, and 35.7 ± 2.6%, respectively, values which are less than the threshold value (70%) for the delineation of prokaryotic genomic species. The phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data indicates that strain YIM TG2190T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardia, for which the name Nocardia zhihengii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM TG2190T (=KCTC 39596T = DSM 100515T).

The cubature Kalman filter (CKF) is widely used in the application of GPS/INS integrated navigation systems. However, its performance may decline in accuracy and even diverge in the presence of process uncertainties. To solve the problem, a new algorithm named improved strong tracking seventh-degree spherical simplex-radial cubature Kalman filter (IST-7thSSRCKF) is proposed in this paper. In the proposed algorithm, the effect of process uncertainty is mitigated by using the improved strong tracking Kalman filter technique, in which the hypothesis testing method is adopted to identify the process uncertainty and the prior state estimate covariance in the CKF is further modified online according to the change in vehicle dynamics. In addition, a new seventh-degree spherical simplex-radial rule is employed to further improve the estimation accuracy of the strong tracking cubature Kalman filter. In this way, the proposed comprehensive algorithm integrates the advantage of 7thSSRCKF’s high accuracy and strong tracking filter’s strong robustness against process uncertainties. The GPS/INS integrated navigation problem with significant dynamic model errors is utilized to validate the performance of proposed IST-7thSSRCKF. Results demonstrate that the improved strong tracking cubature Kalman filter can achieve higher accuracy than the existing CKF and ST-CKF, and is more robust for the GPS/INS integrated navigation system.

A nanoscale cationic porous drug carrier ZJU-101 (ZJU = Zhejiang University), synthesized by the solvothermal method to get the crystal size of ∼300 nm, was used to load diclofenac sodium, an anionic drug. This positively charged host materials showed a large loading capacity of diclofenac sodium (∼0.546 g/g) through ion exchange and penetration procedures. The drug delivery in the inflamed tissues (pH = 5.4) exhibited a more effective release in comparison with that in the normal tissues (pH = 7.4), demonstrating a physiological pH responsive drug release. This discriminating drug release process was controlled by anion exchange between anions in phosphate buttered saline (PBS) and coordinated/free diclofenac anions.

Here we have demonstrated a facile method for construction of self-assembled nanoparticles with excellent fluorescent properties by the synergetic combination of unique AIE effects and tadpole-shaped polymers. The introduction of acid-sensitive Schiff base bonds furnished the polymeric vesicles and micelles with unique pH responsiveness that can possess maximal drug-release controllability inside tumor cells upon changes in physical and chemical environments, but present good stability under physiological conditions. Having benefited from the efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), the DOX-loaded fluorescent aggregates were employed for intracellular imaging and self-localization in surveillance of systemic DOX delivery. Cytotoxicity assay of the DOX-loaded aggregates indicated a fast internalization and a high cellular proliferation inhibition to MCF-7 cells while the PEG-POSS-(TPE)7 nanoparticles displayed no cytotoxicity, exhibiting excellent biocompatibility and biological imaging properties. These results indicated that these biodegradable nanoparticles, as a class of effective pH-responsive and visible nanocarriers, have the potential to improve smart drug delivery and enhance the antitumor efficacy for biomedical applications.

Here we demonstrate a type of pH and reduction dual-sensitive biodegradable micelles, which were self-assembled by a cationic polymer in an aqueous solution. Due to tumor cells or tissues showing low pH and high reduction concentration, these micelles possessed specific tumor targetability and maximal drug-release controllability inside tumor cells upon changes in physical and chemical environments, but presented good stability at physiological conditions. CCK-8 assay showed that the DOX-loaded micelles had a similar cytotoxicity for MCF-7 tumor cells as free DOX, and blank micelles had a very low cytotoxicity to the cells. Fluorescent microscopy observation revealed that the drug-loaded micelles could be quickly internalized by endosomes to inhibit cancer cell growth. These results indicated these biodegradable micelles, as a novel and effective pH- and redox-responsive nanocarrier, have a potential to improve drug delivery and enhance the antitumor efficacy.

Florfenicol, a widely used veterinary antibiotic, has now been frequently detected in various water environments and human urines, with high concentrations. Accordingly, the ecological risks and health hazards of florfenicol are attracting increasing attention. In recent years, antibiotic exposure has been implicated in the disruption of animal glucose metabolism. However, the specific effects of florfenicol on the glucose metabolism system and the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Herein, zebrafish as an animal model were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of florfenicol for 28 days. Using biochemical and molecular analyses, we found that exposure to florfenicol disturbed glucose homeostasis, as evidenced by the abnormal levels of blood glucose and hepatic/muscular glycogen, and the altered expression of genes involved in glycogenolysis, gluconeogenesis, glycogenesis, and glycolysis. Considering the efficient antibacterial activity of florfenicol and the crucial role of intestinal flora in host glucose metabolism, we then analyzed changes in the gut microbiome and its key metabolite short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Results indicated that exposure to florfenicol caused gut microbiota dysbiosis, inhibited the production of intestinal SCFAs, and ultimately affected the downstream signaling pathways of SCFA involved in glucose metabolism. Moreover, non-targeted metabolomics revealed that arachidonic acid and linoleic acid metabolic pathways may be associated with insulin sensitivity changes in florfenicol-exposed livers. Overall, this study highlighted a crucial aspect of the environmental risks of florfenicol to both non-target organisms and humans, and presented novel insights into the mechanistic elucidation of metabolic toxicity of antibiotics.

Realizing efficient energy utilization from the heat source of the sun and the cold source of outer space is of great significance for addressing the global energy and environmental crisis. Materials with ideal full-spectrum solar absorption and infrared emission are highly desirable for adapting to the continuous weather dynamic throughout the day, nonetheless, their development remains challenging. Here, a polymer nanocomposite with full-spectrum strong solar (280-2500 nm) absorption ranging from 88.8% to 94.8% with an average value of 93.2% and full-spectrum high infrared (8-13 µm) emission ranging from 81.3% to 90.0% with an average value of 84.2%, is reported by melt-processing polypropylene and uniformly dispersed low-loading MXene nanosheets (1.9 vol%). The nanocomposite can achieve daytime photothermal enhancement of ≈50 °C and nighttime radiative cooling of 8 °C. The temperature difference throughout the day ensures all-day uninterrupted thermoelectric generation, yielding a power density output of 1.5 W m-2 (daytime) and 7.9 mW m-2 (nighttime) in real outdoor environment without any additional energy consumption. This work provides an impressive polymer nanocomposite with ideal full-spectrum solar absorption and infrared emission for all-day uninterrupted thermal energy management and conversion.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) and diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) parameters correlate with hypoxia biomarkers, namely hypoxia inducible factor-1ɑ (HIF-1ɑ), carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX), and pimonidazole (PIMO), in fibrosarcoma (FS) murine models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A model of 30 FS nude mice was established. All mice underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans after which the IVIM (standard apparent diffusion coefficient [standard ADC], pure diffusion coefficient [D], pseudo-diffusion coefficient [D*], and perfusion fraction [f]) and DKI parameters (mean diffusion [MD], mean kurtosis [MK]) were obtained. Based on an MRI-pathology controlled method, correlations between each MRI parameter and hypoxia biomarkers were assessed by Pearson or Spearman tests. An independent sample t-test or Wilcoxon's rank sum test, and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to identify whether MRI parameters could differentiate between high and low expressions of hypoxia biomarkers. RESULTS: The IVIM/DKI parameters showed varying degrees of correlation with HIF-1α, CAIX, and PIMO expression. Among them, the D, f, and MK values could confirm HIF-1α expression, while D, f, and MK values could assess CAIX expression. Finally, standard D and MK values could evaluate PIMO expression levels. CONCLUSION: IVIM and DKI parameters can be used to reflect hypoxic biomarkers of FS and have the potential to detect tumor hypoxia.

Restoration of the lubrication functions of articular cartilage is an effective treatment to alleviate the progression of osteoarthritis (OA). Herein, we fabricated chitosan-block-poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (CS-b-pSBMA) copolymer via a free radical polymerization of sulfobetaine methacrylate onto activated chitosan segment, structurally mimicking the lubricating biomolecules on cartilage. The successful copolymerization of CS-b-pSBMA was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance. Friction test confirmed that the CS-b-pSBMA copolymer could achieve an excellent lubrication effect on artificial joint materials such as Ti6Al4V alloy with a coefficient of friction as low as 0.008, and on OA-simulated cartilage, better than the conventional lubricant hyaluronic acid, and the adsorption effect of lubricant on cartilage surface was proved by a fluorescence labeling experiment. In addition, CS-b-pSBMA lubricant possessed an outstanding stability, which can withstand enzymatic degradation and even a long-term storage up to 4 weeks. In vitro studies showed that CS-b-pSBMA lubricant had a favorable antibacterial activity and good biocompatibility. In vivo studies confirmed that the CS-b-pSBMA lubricant was stable and could alleviate the degradation process of cartilage in OA mice. This biomimetic lubricant is a promising articular joint lubricant for the treatment of OA and cartilage restoration.

Phosphogypsum (PG) is a major industrial by-product of wet process phosphoric acid production, and untreated PG stockpiled on land will cause severe environmental pollution. Thermal treatment of PG is currently the mainstream treatment method PG can be thermally decomposed to produce CaO, and the decomposition process produces large amounts of SO2. In this paper, phosphate slurry was used to absorb SO2 generated during the PG decomposition to produce phosphoric acid. The effects of operating conditions such as pressure, inlet SO2 concentration, and additive content on the desulfurization efficiency, as well as phosphoric acid yield, were investigated. Under the optimal experimental parameters, the desulfurization efficiency was 100% in the first 3 h, and decreased to 67.42% after 5 h, the maximum phosphate concentration in the solution was 1445.92 mg/L. The Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that SO2 and O2 adsorbed on the surface of P2O5 underwent to generate SO3, which can react with H2O to produce H2SO4. Moreover, it was found that Fe3+ could enhance the catalytic oxidation process of SO2 and O2 by decreasing the reaction energy barrier. This study should be helpful for the recycling of phosphorus resources.
