The aging ovary in mammals leads to the reduced production of sex hormones and a deterioration in follicle quality. The interstitial gland originates from the hypertrophy of the theca cells of atretic follicles and represents an accumulative structure of the ovary that may contribute to its aging. Here, reproductive and mature rabbit ovaries are used to determine whether the interstitial gland plays a crucial role in ovarian aging. We demonstrate that, in the mature ovary, interstitial gland cells accumulate lipid droplets and show ultrastructural characteristics of lipophagy. Furthermore, they undergo modifications and present a foamy appearance, do not express the pan-leukocyte CD-45 marker, and express CYP11A1. These cells are the first to present an increase in lipofuscin accumulation. In foamy cells, the expression of p21 remains low, PCNA expression is maintained at mature ages, and their nuclei do not show positivity for H2AX. The interstitial gland shows a significant increase in lipofuscin accumulation compared with the ovaries of younger rabbits, but lipofuscin accumulation remains constant at mature ages. Surprisingly, no accumulation of cells with DNA damage is evident, and an increase in proliferative cells is observed at the age of 36 months. We suggest that the interstitial gland initially uses lipophagy to maintain steroidogenic homeostasis and prevent cellular senescence.

BACKGROUND: The general assumption that prebiotics reach the colon without any alterations has been challenged. Some in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that 'non-digestible' oligosaccharides are digested to different degrees depending on their structural composition. In the present study, we compared different methods aiming to assess the digestibility of oligosaccharides synthesized by ß-galactosidase (ß-gal) of Lactobacillus delbruecki subsp. bulgaricus CRL450 (CRL450-ß-gal) from lactose, lactulose and lactitol. RESULTS: In the simulated gastrointestinal fluid method, no changes were observed. However, the oligosaccharides synthesized by CRL450-ß-gal were partially hydrolyzed in vitro, depending on their structure and composition, with rat small intestinal extract (RSIE) and small intestinal brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMV) from pig. Digestion of some oligosaccharides increased when mixtures were fed to C57BL/6 mice used as in vivo model; however, lactulose-oligosaccharides were the most resistant to the physiological conditions of mice. In general ß (1→6) linked products showed higher resistance compared to ß (1→3) oligosaccharides. CONCLUSION: In vitro digestion methods, without disaccharidases, may underestimate the importance of carbohydrates hydrolysis in the small intestine. Although BVMM and RSIE digestion assays are appropriate in vitro methods for these studies, in vivo studies remain the most reliable for understanding what actually happens in the digestion of oligosaccharides. © 2024 The Authors. BACKGROUND: Langerhans cells (LC) number and function in mouse vaginal mucosa are affected by 17ß-estradiol (E2) application; nonetheless, its effect on epidermal LC has not been studied. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of topical administration of E2 on the number, phenotype, and migratory ability of LC in mouse skin. METHODS: Ears of adult CD1 male mice were topically treated once with several doses. Immunohistochemical staining for CD207 and TUNEL staining were performed. LC migration to lymph nodes and the effect on the expression of costimulatory molecules on cultured dendritic cells (DC) were also evaluated. RESULTS: E2 decreased the number of CD207+ LC in a dose-dependent manner. One hour after treatment, 1 and 10 µg/mL E2 significantly reduced the LC number by 21% and 26%, respectively, after two hours, the reduction was 23% and 41%, respectively. After 48 hours, LC recovered, and after 96 hours of treatment, the CD207+/MHCII+ DC numbers were increased in regional lymph nodes. However, CD86 and CD40 molecules were expressed at lower levels than in positive control. The TUNEL assay did not show apoptotic cells. Furthermore, in cultured DC, E2 promoted a decrease in CD40 and CD86 expression and an increase in CD273, CD274, MHCII, and CCR7. CONCLUSIONS: The topical administration of E2 induced a transitory local diminution of LC population and a tolerogenic phenotype. This decrease in epidermal LC suggests that E2 may affect skin immune responses, inducing an inhibitory response, which should be considered when prescribing topical E2 medications.

AIMS: To improve the nutri-functional quality of chickpea flour by fermentation with selected lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to formulate functional legume-derived products. METHODS AND RESULTS: A Randomized Complete Block Design was carried out to assess the influence of experimental conditions (presence/absence of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CRL2211 and/or Weissella paramesenteroides CRL2182, temperature, time and dough yield) on LAB population, acidification, antinutritional factors and total phenolic contents (TPCs) of chickpea flour. Fermentation with both strains for 24 h at 37°C produced an increase in LAB (up to 8.9 log CFU/g), acidity (final pH 4.06), TPC (525.00 mg GAE/100 g) and tannin and trypsin inhibitor removal (28.80 mg GAE/100 g and 1.60 mg/g, respectively) higher than the spontaneously fermented doughs. RAPD and Rep-PCR analysis revealed that fermentation was dominated by L. plantarum CRL2211. Molecular docking and dynamics simulations were useful to explain LAB enzyme behaviour during fermentation highlighting the chemical affinity of LAB tannases and proteinases to gallocatechin and trypsin inhibitors. Compared with other processing methods, fermentation was better than soaking, germination and cooking for increasing the techno-functional properties of chickpea flour. Fermented doughs were applied to the manufacture of crackers that contained 81% more TPC and 64% more antioxidant activity than controls. CONCLUSIONS: Fermentation for 24 h at 37°C with selected autochthonous LAB was the best method for improving the quality of chickpea flour and derived crackers type cookies. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: Chickpea is suitable for the development of novel functional foods. Fermentation with selected LAB would improve the final product quality and bioactivity. The combination of experimental and simulation approaches can lead to a better understanding of the fermentation processes to enhance the properties of a food matrix.

Dendritic cells are antigen-presenting cells, which identify and process pathogens to subsequently activate specific T lymphocytes. To regulate the immune responses, DCs have to mature by the recognition of TLR ligands, TNFα or IFNγ. These ligands have been used as adjuvants to activate DCs in situ or in vitro, with toxic effects. It has been shown that some molecules affect the immune system, e.g., Masticadienonic acid (MDA) and 3α-hydroxy masticadienoic acid (3α-OH MDA) triterpenes naturally occurring in several medicinal plants, since they activate the nitric oxide synthase in macrophages and induce T lymphocyte proliferation. The DCs maturation induced by MDA or 3a-OH MDA was determined by incubating these cells with MDA or 3α-OH MDA, and their phenotype was afterwards analyzed. The results showed that only 3α-OH MDA was able to induce DCs maturation. When mice with melanoma were inoculated with DCs/3α-OH MDA, a decreased tumor growth rate was observed along with an extended cell death area within tumors compared to mice treated with DCs incubated with MDA. In conclusion, it is proposed that 3α-OH MDA may be an immunostimulant molecule. Conversely, it is proposed that MDA may be a molecule with anti-inflammatory properties.

A pesticide characterization is presented for two highly technified valleys in northwest Mexico: Culiacan Valley (CV) in Sinaloa and Yaqui Valley (YV) in Sonora. Approximately 250,000 kg of active ingredients are used every year, half of which are considered highly hazardous pesticides. Legacy pesticides are still present in the soils of these valleys. The aim of the present study was to identify and quantify a wide variety of pesticides in soils and correlate their concentrations with historical and current use. Agricultural soils from both valleys were sampled and analyzed using accelerated solvent extraction and subsequent quantification by gas chromatography with selective detectors. The most frequently detected pesticides (mean, µg g-1) in CV were organochlorines (0.1967), organophosphates (0.0928), synthetic pyrethroids (0.2565), organonitrogen (0.0552), and miscellaneous pesticides (0.1851). In YV, the most frequently detected pesticides were organochlorines (0.8607), organophosphates (0.0001), synthetic pyrethroids (0.0124), and miscellaneous pesticides (0.0009). The pesticides were more diverse in CV compared to those of YV, which was based on the types of crops produced. Both locations presented highly hazardous pesticides, including concentrations above the action levels established by the Canadian Soil Quality Guide. A follow-up risk assessment is recommended to assess potential effects.

CONTEXT: Fiddler crabs are important to the ecology of estuarine systems around the world, however, few studies have incorporated them as bioindicators. Urias estuary represents one of the most urbanized lagoons in the Gulf of California region and received discharges from different sources: shrimp farm, thermoelectric plant, fish processing plants, and untreated domestic and sewage wastes. OBJECTIVE: Assess the effects on anthropogenic contamination on female fiddler crabs reproduction, survival and genetic stability. METHODS: Exposition of wild crabs from a less impacted (reference) site to naturally contaminated sediments on under controlled laboratory conditions. Reproductive parameters, levels of DNA damage and mortality rates were measured, together with chemical analyses of sediments. RESULTS: The most contaminated sediments corresponded to the site where fish processing plants were located and the integrated biomarker response analysis revealed that the most adverse effects were produced by exposure to sediments from this site; these crabs showed higher mortality (67%) and poorer ovarian development than those crabs exposed to sediments from other sites. CONCLUSIONS: Female crabs under pollution stress are able to trade-off reproduction for survival, and surviving animals were able to restore genetic stability possibly by activating DNA repair mechanisms. Multiple biomarker approach discriminates different coastal contamination scenarios.

The potential of probiotic bacteria to produce prebiotic oligosaccharides by transgalactosylation has been minimally studied. In this work, we screened the ß-galactosidase (ß-gal) activity of dairy propionibacteria (PAB) isolated from Argentinean foods to select strains for the synthesis of oligosaccharides from lactose (GOS) and lactulose (OsLu). PAB, when grown in a medium with lactose as a carbon source, were disrupted, and the cell-free extracts were assayed for ß-gal activity. Nine strains grew on lactose and showed ß-gal activities from 0.27 to 2.60 U mL-1. Propionibacterium acidipropionici LET 120, the strain with the highest activity, was able to synthesize, using 30% lactose and lactulose at pH 6.5 and 45 °C, 26.8% of LET 120-GOS and 26.1% of LET 120-OsLu after 24 h. When they were tested as carbon sources for growth, P. acidipropionici LET 120 attained higher biomasses, µmax and ß-gal activities at the expense of Aspergillus oryzae-OsLu, Vivinal®-GOS and lactulose compared to lactose or glucose. In addition, LET 120-GOS and LET 120-OsLu synthesized by PAB were prebiotic for some probiotic strains. For the first time, our results show the production of GOS and OsLu by dairy PAB, and these results encourage further studies on the optimization of the synthesis and structure characterization of the obtained oligosaccharides.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) improve the organoleptic, nutritional and physicochemical properties of artisanal foods. In this study, we selected 31 fermented dairy and vegetable foods marketed in Tucumán city, Argentina, as sources of LAB for the production of pickles. Sixty-four isolates presumptively identified as Lactobacillus strains were screened for relevant technological properties for production of fermented foods. Most strains showed moderate to good acidification (>0.04 pH units/h) and proteolytic capabilities (free aminoacids >1 mmol/L), produced diacetyl and/or acetoin and were resistant to 4% NaCl. Based on acid production and osmotolerance, we selected six LAB strains and identified them by 16S rDNA sequencing (97-100% identity) as: Lactobacillus rhamnosus CRL2159 and CRL2164, L. plantarum CRL2161 and CRL2162, Weissella viridescens CRL2160 and W. paramesenteroides CRL2163. Relevant properties for pickle manufacturing were further assessed. At an initial pH=4.5 and 7% NaCl, L. plantarum CRL2162 and L. rhamnosus CRL2164 performed the best with high growth and inhibitory activity against Escherichia coli and Listeria innocua. There was no obvious antagonism among the selected strains that would dismiss their use in mixed cultures. Properties of the selected LAB suggest their potential as starter cultures for obtaining standardized, fermented vegetable products of high quality. The development of these new industrial starters would increase the competitiveness of production and open the country's frontiers in the canned vegetable market.

Plant lectins are specific carbohydrate-binding proteins that are widespread in legumes such as beans and pulses, seeds, cereals, and many plants used as farm feeds. They are highly resistant to cooking and digestion, reaching the intestinal lumen and/or blood circulation with biological activity. Since many legume lectins trigger harmful local and systemic reactions after their binding to the mucosal surface, these molecules are generally considered anti-nutritive and/or toxic substances. In the gut, specific cell receptors and bacteria may interact with these dietary components, leading to changes in intestinal physiology. It has been proposed that probiotic microorganisms with suitable surface glycosidic moieties could bind to dietary lectins, favoring their elimination from the intestinal lumen or inhibiting their interaction with epithelial cells. In this work, we assessed in vitro the effects of two representative plant lectins, concanavalin A (Con A) and jacalin (AIL) on the proliferation of SW480 colonic adenocarcinoma cells and metabolic activity of colonic microbiota in the absence or presence of Propionibacterium acidipropionici CRL 1198. Both lectins induced proliferation of colonic cells in a dose-dependent manner, whereas ConA inhibited fermentative activities of colonic microbiota. Pre-incubation of propionibacteria with lectins prevented these effects, which could be ascribed to the binding of lectins by bacterial cells since P. acidipropionici CRL 1198 was unable to metabolize these proteins, and its adhesion to colonic cells was reduced after reaction with Con A or AIL. The results suggest that consumption of propionibacteria at the same time as lectins could reduce the incidence of lectin-induced alterations in the gut and may be a tool to protect intestinal physiology.

The state of Sinaloa in Mexico is an industrialized agricultural region with a documented pesticide usage of 700 t year-1; which at least 17 of the pesticides are classified as moderately to highly toxic. Pollutants in the water column of rivers and drains are of great concern because the water flows into coastal lagoons and nearshore waters and thereby affects aquatic organisms. This study was done in four municipalities in the state of Sinaloa that produce food intensively. To investigate the link between pollution in the lagoons and their proximity to agricultural sites, water was sampled in three coastal lagoons and in the rivers and drains that flow into them. Seawater from the Gulf of California, 10 km from the coast, was also analyzed. Concentrations of nutrients, organochlorines, and organophosphorus pesticides were determined. Nutrient determination showed an unhealthy environment with N/P ratios of <16, thus favoring nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria. The organochlorine pesticides showed a clear accumulation in the coastal lagoons from the drains and rivers, with ΣHCH showing the highest concentrations. In the southern part of the region studied, pollution of the coastal lagoon of Pabellones could be traced mainly to the drains from the agricultural sites. Accumulation of OC pesticides was also observed in the Gulf of California. Tests for 22 organophosphates revealed only five (diazinon, disulfoton, methyl parathion, chlorpyrifos, and mevinphos); diazinon was detected at all the sites, although methyl parathion was present at some sites at concentrations one order of magnitude higher than diazinon.

Vanadium (V) is an air pollutant released into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels. Also, it has been recently evaluated for their carcinogenic potential to establish permissible limits of exposure at workplaces. We previously reported an increase in the number and size of platelets and their precursor cells and megakaryocytes in bone marrow and spleen. The aim of this study was to identify the involvement of Janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway and thrombopoietin (TPO) receptor, and myeloproliferative leukemia virus oncogene (Mpl), in megakaryocyte proliferation induced by this compound. Mice were exposed twice a week to vanadium pentoxide inhalation (0.02 M) and were killed at 4th, 6th, and 8th week of exposure. Phosphorylated JAK2 (JAK2 ph), STAT3 (STAT3 ph), STAT5, and Mpl were identified in mice spleen megakaryocytes by cytofluorometry and immunohistochemistry. An increase in JAK2 ph and STAT3 ph, but a decrease in Mpl at 8-week exposure was identified in our findings. Taking together, we propose that the morphological findings, JAK/STAT activation, and decreased Mpl receptor induced by V leads to a condition comparable to essential thrombocythemia, so the effect on megakaryocytes caused by different mechanisms is similar. We also suggest that the decrease in Mpl is a negative feedback mechanism after the JAK/STAT activation. Since megakaryocytes are platelet precursors, their alteration affects platelet morphology and function, which might have implications in hemostasis as demonstrated previously, so it is important to continue evaluating the effects of toxics and pollutants on megakaryocytes and platelets.

The spotted rose snapper (Lutjanus guttatus) is an important commercial species in Mexico with good culture potential. The osteological study at early stages in this species is an important tool to confirm normal bone structure and for the detection of malformations that may occur during early development. This study was carried out in order to evaluate and describe the normal osteological development of the vertebral column and caudal complex of this species grown under controlled conditions. For this, a total of 540 larvae of L. guttatus, between 2.1 and 17.5 mm of total length (TL), were cultured during 36 days; culture conditions were 28 degrees C, 5.74 mg/L oxygen and 32.2 ups salinity with standard feeding rates. To detect growth changes, a sample of 15 organisms was daily taken from day one until day 36 of post-hatch (DPH). Samples were processed following standard techniques of clearing, and cartilage (alcian blue) and bone staining (alizarin red). Results showed that the vertebral column is composed of ten vertebrae in the abdominal region, and 14 vertebrae including the urostyle in the caudal region. The development of the axial skeleton starts with the neural arches and haemal arches at 3.8 mm TL. Caudal elements such as the hypurals and parahypural began to develop at 4.1 mm TL. Pre-flexion and flexion of the notochord and the formation of all hypurals were observed between 5.3 and 5.8 mm TL. Ossification of the vertebrae in the abdominal region and in some neural arches initiated at 9.5mm TL. In the caudal region, all the neural and haemal arches ossified at 10.2 mm TL. All the abdominal vertebrae and their respective neural arches and parapophyses ossified at 11.2 mm TL, while the elements of the caudal complex that ossified were the hypurals, parahypurals and modified haemal spines. All caudal fm rays, 12 neural spines and 3 haemal arches were ossified by 15.5 mm. The complete ossification process of this specie under laboratory culture conditions was observed when larvae reached 17.3 mm TL on 36 DPH. Detailed analysis of the osteological structures will allow a reference description to evaluate and detect malformations that may occur during the larval culture of the spotted rose snapper.

Pulses are considered superfoods for the future world due to their properties, but they require processing to reduce antinutritional factors (ANFs) and increase bioactivity. In this study, bean flour (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was fermented under different conditions (addition of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CRL 2211 and/or Weissella paramesenteroides CRL 2182, temperature, time and dough yield) to improve its nutri-functional quality. Fermentation for 24 h at 37 °C with the mixed starter increased the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) population, acidity, polyphenol content (TPC) and ANF removal more than spontaneous fermentation. Statistical and rep-PCR analysis showed that fermentation was mainly conducted by Lp. plantarum CRL 2211. Metabolic modeling revealed potential cross-feeding between Lp. plantarum and W. paramesenteroides, while the molecular docking and dynamic simulation of LAB tannases and proteinases involved in ANF removal revealed their chemical affinity to gallocatechin and trypsin inhibitors. Fermentation was better than soaking, germination and cooking for enhancing bean flour properties: it increased the free amino acids content by 50% by releasing glutamine, glutamic acid, arginine, leucine and lysine and modified TPC by increasing gallic acid and decreasing caffeic, ferulic and vanillic acids and quercetin-3-glucoside. The combination of experimental and simulation data may help us to understand fermentation processes and to design products with desirable features.

Prosthechea karwinskii is an endemic orchid of Mexico with cultural significance for its ornamental, food, religious, and medicinal uses. In traditional medicine, diabetic patients use the leaves of this plant to lower glucose levels. The present study evaluated the effect of P. karwinskii leaves extract on the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in a model of obese rats with insulin resistance for its nutraceutical potential to reduce insulin resistance and oxidative stress. Obesity and insulin resistance were induced with 40% sucrose in water for 20 weeks. Four groups (control rats, obese rats, obese rats administered the extract, and obese rats administered metformin) were evaluated. Extract compounds were identified by UHPLC-ESI-qTOF-MS/MS. Glucose, insulin, triglyceride, and insulin resistance indices (HOMA-IR and TyG), as well as the activity of the antioxidant enzymes, increased in rats in the obese group. Administration of P. karwinskii extract and metformin reduced glucose, insulin, triglyceride, and insulin resistance indices and antioxidant enzyme activity to values similar to those of the control group. Therefore, this study shows the nutraceutical potential of P. karwinskii extract as an ingredient in the formulation of dietary supplements or functional foods to help treat diseases whose pathophysiology is related to oxidative stress and insulin resistance.

Glucotoxicity may exert its deleterious effects on pancreatic ß-cell function via a myriad of mechanisms, leading to impaired insulin secretion and, eventually, type 2 diabetes. ß-cell communication requires gap junction channels to be present among these cells. Gap junctions are constituted by transmembrane proteins of the connexins (Cxs) family. Two Cx genes have been identified in ß cells, Cx36 and Cx30.2. We have found evidence that the glucose concentration on its own is sufficient to regulate Cx30.2 gene expression in mouse islets. In this work, we examine the involvement of the Cx30.2 protein in the survival of ß cells (RIN-m5F). METHODS: RIN-m5F cells were cultured in 5 mM D-glucose (normal) or 30 mM D-glucose (high glucose) for 24 h. Cx30.2 siRNAs was used to downregulate Cx30.2 expression. Apoptosis was measured by means of TUNEL, an annexin V staining method, and the cleaved form of the caspase-3 protein was determined using Western blot. RESULTS: High glucose did not induce apoptosis in RIN-m5F ß cells after 24 h; interestingly, high glucose increased the Cx30.2 total protein levels. Moreover, this work found that the downregulation of Cx30.2 expression in high glucose promoted apoptosis in RIN-m5F cells. CONCLUSION: The data suggest that the upregulation of Cx30.2 protects ß cells from hyperglycemia-induced apoptosis. Furthermore, Cx30.2 may be a promising avenue of therapeutic investigation for the treatment of glucose metabolic disorders.

The development of injectable hydrogels with natural biopolymers such as gelatin (Ge) and hyaluronic acid (Ha) is widely performed due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. The combination of both polymers crosslinked with N-Ethyl-N'-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) can be used as an innovative dermal filler that stimulates fibroblast activity and increases skin elasticity and tightness. Thus, crosslinked Ge/Ha hydrogels with different concentrations of EDC were administered subcutaneously to test their efficacy in young and old rats. At higher EDC concentrations, the viscosity decreases while the particle size of the hydrogels increases. At all concentrations of EDC, amino and carboxyl groups are present. The histological analysis shows an acute inflammatory response, which disappears seven days after application. At one and three months post-treatment, no remains of the hydrogels are found, and the number of fibroblasts increases in all groups in comparison with the control. In addition, the elastic modulus of the skin increases after three months of treatment. Because EDC-crosslinked Ge/Ha hydrogels are biocompatible and induce increased skin tension, fibroblast proliferation, and de novo extracellular matrix production, we propose their use as a treatment to attenuate wrinkles and expression lines.

Gastric injury is mainly described by inflammation of the gastric epithelium. Recently, our group of work demonstrated that Prosthechea karwinskii leaves extract induces both an in vitro antioxidative action and an in vivo gastroprotective effect in a rat. However, the molecules involved in the gastroprotective action by Prosthechea karwinskii are not known. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine whether Prosthechea karwinskii extract modifies anti-inflammatory and antioxidative biomarkers in an in vivo rat model of indomethacin-induced gastric injury. Rats were orally administered with indomethacin and Prosthechea karwinskii leaf extract. Our results suggest that the gastroprotective effect of Prosthechea karwinskii leaf extract is related to the reduction in leukocyte infiltration and antioxidative action in a model of indomethacin-induced gastric injury. Further studies are warranted to investigate the role of the compounds identified in the gastroprotective action of Prosthechea karwinskii leaves extract.

Dairy propionibacteria are microorganisms of interest for their role as starters in cheese technology and as well as their functions as probiotics. Previous studies have demonstrated that Propionibacterium acidipropionici metabolize lactose by a ß-galactosidase that resists the gastrointestinal transit and the manufacture of a Swiss-type cheese, so that could be considered for their inclusion in a probiotic product assigned to intolerant individuals. In the present work we studied the effect of the sequential addition of lactose and lactate as first or second energy sources on the growth and ß-galactosidase activity of P. acidipropionici Q4. The highest ß-galactosidase activity was observed in a medium containing only lactate whereas higher final biomass was obtained in a medium with lactose. When lactate was used by this strain as a second energy source, a marked increase of the intracellular pyruvate level was observed, followed by lactate consumption and increase of specific ß-galactosidase activity whereas lactose consumption became negligible. On the contrary, when lactose was provided as second energy source, lactic acid stopped to be metabolized, a decrease of the intracellular pyruvate concentration was observed and ß-galactosidase activity sharply returned to a value that resembled the observed during the growth on lactose alone. Results suggest that the relative concentration of each substrate in the culture medium and the intracellular pyruvate level were decisive for both the choice of the energetic substrate and the ß-galactosidase activity in propionibacteria. This information should be useful to decide the most appropriate vehicle to deliver propionibacteria to the host in order to obtain the highest ß-galactosidase activity.

Agriculture is one of the most important economic activities in Sinaloa, Mexico. The Culiacan Valley is an extensive agricultural region characterized by a variety of crops with high-yield productions. In this study, concentrations of organochlorine (OCPs) and organophosphorus (OPs) pesticides and polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) were determined in sediments of the agricultural drainage system of Culiacan Valley. Overall, 32 compounds were detected, with concentrations widely ranging from 0.03 to 1 294 ng g(-1) dry weight. OCP concentrations (15) ranged from 0.1 to 20.19 ng g(-1) dw. OP concentrations (8) ranged from 0.03 to 1294 ng g(-1) dw, and diazinon was the compound with the highest concentration. PCB concentrations were also determined and varied from 0.05 to 3.29 ng g(-1) dw. Other compounds detected included permethrin, triadimefon, and fipronil. The central zone registered the higher concentrations and the greatest number of compounds, which could be related to the occurrence of horticultural fields in this zone. According to sediment quality guidelines, the compounds exceeding the probable effect level were γ-HCH, p,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE, while the pesticides above the maximum permissible concentration were endosulfan, azinphos methyl, diazinon, dichlorvos, and permethrin. Although Sinaloa is an important agricultural crop producer in northwest Mexico, there are not many studies dealing with pesticide distribution in agricultural areas.
