RESUMO

Behavioral addiction (BA) and substance use disorder (SUD) share similarities and differences in clinical symptoms, cognitive functions, and behavioral attributes. However, little is known about whether and how functional networks in the human brain manifest commonalities and differences between BA and SUD. Voxel-wise meta-analyses of resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) were conducted in BA and SUD separately, followed by quantitative conjunction analyses to identify the common and distinct alterations across both the BA and SUD groups. A total of 92 datasets with 2444 addicted patients and 2712 healthy controls (HCs) were eligible for the meta-analysis. Our findings demonstrated that BA and SUD exhibited common alterations in rs-FC between frontoparietal network (FPN) and other high-level neurocognitive networks (i.e. default mode network (DMN), affective network (AN), and salience network (SN)) as well as hyperconnectivity between SN seeds and the Rolandic operculum in SSN. In addition, compared with BA, SUD exhibited several distinct within- and between-network rs-FC alterations mainly involved in the DMN and FPN. Further, altered within- and between-network rs-FC showed significant association with clinical characteristics such as the severity of addiction in BA and duration of substance usage in SUD. The common rs-FC alterations in BA and SUD exhibited the relationship with consistent aberrant behaviors in both addiction groups, such as impaired inhibition control and salience attribution. By contrast, the distinct rs-FC alterations might suggest specific substance effects on the brain neural transmitter systems in SUD.

Cross-species connectome atlas (CCA) that can provide connectionally homogeneous and homologous brain nodes is essential and customized for cross-species neuroscience. However, existing CCAs were flawed in design and coarse-grained in results. In this study, a normative mapping framework of CCA was proposed and applied on human and macaque striatum. Specifically, all striatal voxels in the 2 species were mixed together and classified based on their represented and characterized feature of within-striatum resting-state functional connectivity, which was shared between the species. Six pairs of striatal parcels in these species were delineated in both hemispheres. Furthermore, this striatal parcellation was demonstrated by the best-matched whole-brain functional and structural connectivity between interspecies corresponding subregions. Besides, detailed interspecies differences in whole-brain multimodal connectivities and involved brain functions of these subregions were described to flesh out this CCA of striatum. In particular, this flexible and scalable mapping framework enables reliable construction of CCA of the whole brain, which would enable reliable findings in future cross-species research and advance our understandings into how the human brain works.

Ultrasound extraction (UE) enhanced with deep eutectic solvent (DES) was used to extract Lentinus edodes polysaccharides. Box-Behnken design (BBD) was applied to investigate the influences of water content (10-90 %), solid-liquid solvent (1 : 10-1 : 50 g/mL), time (4-12 min), temperature (40-80 °C) and ultrasonic power (100-500 W) on the yield of Lentinus edodes polysaccharides. The optimal extraction conditions were ultrasonic power of 300 W, extraction time of 8 min, water content of 80 %, a solid-liquid ratio of 1 : 30 g/mL and a temperature of 60 °C, respectively. The highest extraction yield of Lentinus edodes polysaccharide was 10.17 % under optimal conditions. The results of FT-IR, SEM, and monosaccharide composition confirmed that the extracts possessed the characteristics of polysaccharides. In addition, the polysaccharides obtained with the UE enhanced with DES method exhibited higher antioxidant activities than the polysaccharides extracted with the UE method and HWE method. This extraction method can further expand the production efficiency and structural diversity of Lentinus edodes polysaccharides and meet the supply and demand relationship. It can be foreseen that this method can be applied to the extraction of more active substances.

Anatomical and functional heterogeneous substantia nigra (SN) has been extensively studied in humans and animals like rhesus monkeys given its crucial role in modulating a broad range of behaviors. Increasingly important cross-species research of SN may require connectionally homogeneous and homologous subregions of SN as objective and stable starting points from which the evolutionary characteristics of brain could be inspected. However, existing atlases of SN were all inaccurate mappings as a cross-species connectome atlas due to inadequate homology constraint during their constructions, and arbitrary paired use of these atlases might cause unreliable findings. In this study, a reliable blind-source cross-species parcellation of SN was developed based on the following rationale: striatonigrostriatal circuits form major structure of nigral connectivity; different nigral components have unique striatonigrostriatal connectivity; and inter-species corresponding human and macaque nigral components have similar striatonigrostriatal connectivity. Specifically, all voxels in human and macaque SN were grouped together and then classified based on inter-species identically characterized striatonigrostriatal connectivity attributes. Our results delineated a pars compacta-pars reticulate-like parcellation and further demonstrated its reliability by illustrating best-matched whole-brain structural and functional connectivity profiles of inter-species corresponding nigral subregions. Detailed inter-species and inter-regional differences in multi-aspect connectivities of these nigral subregions were inspected. It is expected that this cross-species connectome atlas of SN can offer biologically reliable cornerstones and important information to facilitate future cross-species research.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to explore the incremental benefit of bevacizumab (Bev) in the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) with different doses. METHODS: A literature search of eight electronic databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang databases, Chinese Biomedical Database, VIP medicine information, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, PubMed, and EMBASE) was conducted from database creation to December 2022. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared Bev at various dosages + chemotherapy (CT) versus placebo (or blank control) + CT were selected. The overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), overall response rate (ORR; complete response [CR] + partial response [PR]), and grade ≥ 3 adverse events (AEs) were integrated first by pooled analysis. The likelihood of ideal dosage of Bev was then ranked using random effects within Bayesian analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-six RCTs involving 18,261 patients met the inclusion criteria. OS increased significantly after using 5 mg (HR: 0.87, 95% CI 0.75 to 1.00) and 10 mg dosages of Bev (HR: 0.75, 95% CI 0.66 to 0.85) with CT, but statistical significance was not attained for the 7.5 mg dose (HR: 0.95, 95% CI 0.83 to 1.08). A significantly increased in PFS with doses of 5 mg (HR: 0.69, 95% CI 0.58 to 0.83), 7.5 mg (HR: 0.81, 95% CI 0.66 to 1.00), and 10 mg (HR: 0.60, 95% CI 0.53 to 0.68). ORR distinctly increased after 5 mg (RR: 1.34, 95% CI 1.15 to 1.55), 7.5 mg (RR: 1.25, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.50), and10 mg (RR: 2.27, 95% CI 1.82 to 2.84) doses were administered. Grade ≥ 3 AEs increased clearly in 5 mg (RR: 1.11, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.20) compared to 7.5 mg (RR: 1.05, 95% CI 0.82 to 1.35) and 10 mg (RR: 1.15, 95% CI 0.98 to 1.36). Bayesian analysis demonstrated that 10 mg Bev obtained the maximum time of OS (HR: 0.75, 95% CrI 0.58 to 0.97; probability rank = 0.05) indirectly compared to 5 mg and 7.5 mg Bev. Compared with 5 mg and 7.5 mg Bev, 10 mg Bev also holds the longest duration for PFS (HR: 0.59, 95% CrI 0.43 to 0.82; probability rank = 0.00). In terms of ORR, 10 mg Bev holds the maximum frequency (RR: 2.02, 95% CrI 1.52 to 2.66; probability rank = 0.98) in comparison to 5 mg and 7.5 mg Bev clearly. For grade ≥ 3 AEs, 10 mg Bev has the maximum incidence (RR: 1.15, 95% CrI 0.95 to 1.40, probability rank = 0.67) in comparison to other doses of Bev. CONCLUSION: The study suggests that 10 mg dose Bev could be more effective in treating advanced CRC in efficacy, but 5 mg Bev could be more safer in terms of safety.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme to generate LP11/LP21 modes with tunable mode lobe orientation (MLO). Wherein, the MLOs have an excellent linear relationship with the linearly-polarized states of input fundamental modes. The proposed scheme is composed of a polarization controller (PC), a mode converter, a mode and polarization controller (PMC) which is twined with the few mode fiber (FMF) and a polarizer. Experimental results show that the deviations of MLOs between generated LP11/LP21 modes and simulated ones are less than 3.5 and 8 degrees over C band. Since polarization control up to nanosecond scale is available with GaAs or lithium based electro-optic modulator, the proposed scheme could enable nanosecond time scale MLO control, which would be immensely useful for optical trapping, fiber sensors and optical communications.

We demonstrate for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, an all-fiber orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexer that multiplexes both OAM modes of -l and +l up to the second order by using a mode-selective photonic lantern and a mode polarization controller. The experimentally obtained mode profiles are close to the theoretical results, and the mode purities are higher than 89% for all the OAM modes at 1550 nm. The losses for all mode generations are less than 3.8 dB in the C-band.

In this Letter, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a new method to generate tunable orbital angular momentum (OAM) by continuously changing the angle of linear polarization of the input light. We use the Fourier series of left- and right-hand projections to prove that the average OAM smoothly varied from l=-1 to l=1 with the angle of LP of input light changing from 0 to π, which is fulfilled by an electrical polarization controller.

In this paper, a fiber-based tunable mode rotator is proposed and demonstrated by using the few mode-polarization maintaining fiber (FM-PMF). The mode birefringence in the FM-PMF causes phase difference between two orthogonal degenerate modes. With rotating the FM-PMF segment and getting a variation of aligning angle between the injected LP11 (LP21) mode axis and FM-PMF axis, another intended LP11 (LP21) mode with a certain orientation can be controllably generated at the FM-PMF output.

Prunus conradinae (subgenus Cerasus, Rosaceae) is a significant germplasm resource of wild cherry blossom in China. To ensure the comprehensiveness of this study, we used a large sample size (12 populations comprising 244 individuals) which involved the fresh leaves of P. conradinae in Eastern, Central, and Southwestern China. We combined morphological and molecular evidence (three chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) sequences and one nuclear DNA (nr DNA) sequence) to examine the population of P. conradinae variation and differentiation. Our results revealed that Central, East, and Southwest China are important regions for the conservation of P. conradinae to ensure adequate germplasm resources in the future. We also found support for a new variant, P. conradinae var. rubrum. We observed high genetic diversity within P. conradinae (haplotype diversity [Hd] = 0.830; ribotype diversity [Rd] = 0.798), with novel genetic variation and a distinct genealogical structure among populations. There was genetic variation among populations and phylogeographic structure among populations and three geographical groups (Central, East, and Southwest China). The genetic differentiation coefficient was the lowest in the Southwest region and the gene exchange was obvious, while the differentiation was obvious in Central China. In the three geographic groups, we identified two distinct lineages: an East China lineage (Central China and East China) and a Southwest China lineage ((Central China and Southwest China) and East China). These two lineages originated approximately 4.38 million years ago (Mya) in the early Pliocene due to geographic isolation. P. conradinae expanded from Central China to East China at 3.32 Mya (95% HPD: 1.12-5.17 Mya) in the Pliocene. The population of P. conradinae spread from East China to Southwest China, and the differentiation time was 2.17 Mya (95% (HPD: 0.47-4.54 Mya), suggesting that the population of P. conradinae differentiated first in Central and East China. The population of P. conradinae experienced differentiation from Central China to Southwest China around 1.10 Mya (95% HPD: 0.11-2.85 Mya) during the early Pleistocene of the Quaternary period. The southeastern region of East China, near Mount Wuyi, likely serves as a refuge for P. conradinae. This study establishes a theoretical foundation for the classification, identification, conservation, and exploitation of germplasm resources of P. conradinae.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) in the aging population worldwide has become a significant concern due to subjectivity of evaluations and the lack of precise diagnostic methods and specific indicators. Developing personalized diagnostic strategies for NCDs has therefore become a priority. RESULTS: Multimodal electroencephalography (EEG) data of a matched cohort of normal aging (NA) and NCDs seniors were recorded, and their faecal samples and urine exosomes were collected to identify multi-omics signatures and metabolic pathways in NCDs by integrating metagenomics, proteomics, and metabolomics analysis. Additionally, experimental verification of multi-omics signatures was carried out in aged mice using faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). We found that NCDs seniors had low EEG power spectral density and identified specific microbiota, including Ruminococcus gnavus, Enterocloster bolteae, Lachnoclostridium sp. YL 32, and metabolites, including L-tryptophan, L-glutamic acid, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs), as well as disturbed biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids and TCA cycle dysfunction, validated in aged mice. Finally, we employed a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm to construct a machine learning model to classify NA and NCDs groups based on the fusion of EEG data and multi-omics profiles and the model demonstrated 92.69% accuracy in classifying NA and NCDs groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights the potential of multi-omics profiling and EEG data fusion in personalized diagnosis of NCDs, with the potential to improve diagnostic precision and provide insights into the underlying mechanisms of NCDs. PURPOSE: This study aimed at establishing the impact of community-based rehabilitation (CBR) on the physical functioning and activity of daily living (ADL) of patients with stroke (PWS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, an electronic search was conducted in five databases, including PubMed, OVID Embase, OVID Medline, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science between May 2010 and 2020. Meta-analysis was performed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Version 2 software to establish whether the studies were sufficiently homogenous. RESULTS: Twenty studies out of 828 publications were included in the present systematic review. A significant difference between CBR intervention and control groups was identified about the physical functional capacity in mobility, 6-metre walk test (6MWT) (g = 0.351, 95% CI (0.110, 0.592)), community walking test (g= -0.473, 95% CI (-0.926, -0.020)) and on the other hand a significant improvement in ADL was found (g = 0.138, 95% CI(0.051, 0.224)). CONCLUSIONS: CBR is revealed to be effective in improving the physical functioning and ADL for PWS and is drawn based on eligible studies which were conducted in high-income countries (HICs). This highlights a gap between developed and less-resourced countries as far as CBR for PWS is concerned and calls for a further study. Protocol Registration: CRD42020159683Implication for rehabilitationCommunity-based rehabilitation (CBR) is recommended as one of the best programme for treating stroke patients with stroke (PWS) after they are discharged from hospitals.CBR is effective in improving the physical functioning and activity of daily living of PWS.Further research should be carried out to compare between CBR and institution-based rehabilitation for PWS, especially the less-resourced settings which are grappling with a challenge of limited skilled rehabilitation professionals.

Background: Altered large-scale brain systems, including structural alterations and resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) changes, have been demonstrated as effective system-level biomarkers for revealing potential neural mechanism of multiple brain disorders. However, identifying consistent abnormalities of large-scale brain systems in behavioral addictions (BA) is challenging due to varying methods and inconsistent results. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the significantly abnormal large-scale brain systems in BA. Method: PubMed, OVID Embase, OVID Medline, and Web of Science were searched with relevant keywords to identify potential studies. A total of 52 studies including 35 rs-FC studies and 17 structural studies were examined by extracting the coordinates of seeds and target brain regions. The seeds were then categorized into predefined seven networks by their locations based on previous parcellations in rs-FC studies, followed by pooling the results in those networks. Results: The rs-FC findings illustrated that BA were characterized as abnormal networks in response to inhibition, salience attribution, self-referential mental process, and reward-driven behaviors. Meanwhile, meta-analysis of structural studies showed decreased gray matter volume in the anterior cingulate cortex, extending to the middle cingulate cortex and the superior frontal gyrus. Importantly, overlapping regions in the cingulate cortex and anterior thalamus projections extending to caudate regions exhibited both dysfunctions in structure and rs-FC. Conclusions: This study highlighted substantial dysconnectivity in BA, which might result in impaired response to inhibition and salience attribution. Therefore, this study might provide novel insights of neural biomarkers for clinical diagnoses and treatment targets for BA.

Background: Lung cancer has one of the highest mortality rates of all cancers, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for the vast majority (about 85%) of lung cancers. Psychological and cognitive abnormalities are common in cancer patients, and cancer information can affect brain function and structure through various pathways. To observe abnormal brain function in NSCLC patients, the main purpose of this study was to construct an individualized metabolic brain network of patients with advanced NSCLC using the Kullback-Leibler divergence-based similarity (KLS) method. Methods: This study included 78 patients with pathologically proven advanced NSCLC and 60 healthy individuals, brain 18F-FDG PET images of these individuals were collected and all patients with advanced NSCLC were followed up (>1 year) to confirm their overall survival. FDG-PET images were subjected to individual KLS metabolic network construction and Graph theoretical analysis. According to the analysis results, a predictive model was constructed by machine learning to predict the overall survival of NSLCL patients, and the correlation with the real survival was calculated. Results: Significant differences in the degree and betweenness distributions of brain network nodes between the NSCLC and control groups (p<0.05) were found. Compared to the normal group, patients with advanced NSCLC showed abnormal brain network connections and nodes in the temporal lobe, frontal lobe, and limbic system. The prediction model constructed using the abnormal brain network as a feature predicted the overall survival time and the actual survival time fitting with statistical significance (r=0.42, p=0.012). Conclusions: An individualized brain metabolic network of patients with NSCLC was constructed using the KLS method, thereby providing more clinical information to guide further clinical treatment.

Aim: This study focusses on the anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory roles of berberine (BBR) in ulcerative colitis (UC) treatment. Additionally, the underlying mechanisms of BBR were systematically explored. Methods: A 3% (w/v) dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) solution was used for establishing the mice UC model. M2 macrophage polarisation was induced in RAW 264.7 cells using interleukin 4 (IL-4), whereas M1 macrophage polarisation was induced using lipopolysaccharide. Colon length, colon mucosa damage index (CMDI), and haematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining were used to evaluate colon damage induced by DSS. M1/M2 macrophages in the colon tissue were identified using immunofluorescence (IF) staining with CD86+ or CD163+. M1/M2 macrophages in the abdomen were examined using flow cytometry. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was conducted to identify M1/M2 macrophage supernatant biomarkers in RAW 264.7 cells. Western blotting, immunohistochemical staining, and real-time PCR were performed to investigate the potential mechanisms of BBR for treating UC in vivo and in vitro. Results: BBR was found to prolong colon length, ameliorate CMDI and alleviate the colon's pathological changes in UC mice. In DSS-induced UC mice, M1 macrophages predominated. BBR promoted M2 macrophages and suppressed M1 macrophages in the colon and abdomen of DSS-induced UC mice. Additionally, BBR significantly decreased M1-specific markers (IFN-γ and IL-1ß) while increasing M2-specific markers (IL-10 and TGF-ß) in the supernatants of RAW 264.7 cells. BBR upregulated the mRNA expression of IL-4, STAT6, and Chil3 while downregulating TNF-α, IFN-γ, and NOS2 expression in vivo. Moreover, BBR activated the downstream targets of the IL-4-STAT6 signalling pathway and enhanced the phosphorylation of STAT6 in vivo and in vitro to polarise M2 macrophage. Conclusion: In UC mice, BBR suppressed M1 macrophages while promoting M2 macrophages. M1 macrophage suppression and M2 macrophage activation were strongly correlated with the anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating activities of BBR. Chronic pain (CP) has been found to cause significant alternations of the brain's structure and function due to changes in pain processing and disrupted cognitive functions, including with respect to the prefrontal cortex (PFC). However, until now, no studies have used a wearable, low-cost neuroimaging tool capable of performing functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to explore the functional alternations of the PFC and thus automatically achieve a clinical diagnosis of CP. In this case-control study, the pain characteristics of 19 chronic pain patients and 32 healthy controls were measured using fNIRS. Functional connectivity (FC), FC in the PFC, and spontaneous brain activity of the PFC were examined in the CP patients and compared to those of healthy controls (HCs). Then, leave-one-out cross-validation and machine learning algorithms were used to automatically achieve a diagnosis corresponding to a CP patient or an HC. The current study found significantly weaker FC, notably higher small-worldness properties of FC, and increased spontaneous brain activity during resting state within the PFC. Additionally, the resting-state fNIRS measurements exhibited excellent performance in identifying the chronic pain patients via supervised machine learning, achieving F1 score of 0.8229 using only seven features. It is expected that potential FC features can be identified, which can thus serve as a neural marker for the detection of CP using machine learning algorithms. Therefore, the present study will open a new avenue for the diagnosis of chronic musculoskeletal pain by using fNIRS and machine learning techniques.

Significance: Performance during risky decision making is one of the essential cognitive functions that is impaired in several psychiatric disorders including addiction. However, the cognitive mechanism and neural correlates underlying risky decision making in chronic pain patients are unclear. To our knowledge, this study is among the first to construct computational models to detect the underlying cognitive process of chronic pain patients during risky decision making. Aim: This study aimed at inspecting the significantly abnormal risky decision-making patterns of chronic pain patients and its neuro-cognitive correlates. Approach: In this case-control study, 19 chronic pain patients and 32 healthy controls (HCs) were included to measure the risky decision making in a balloon analogue risk task (BART). Optical neuroimaging using functional near-infrared spectroscopy, together with computational modeling, was carried out to systematically characterize the specific impairments based on BART. Results: Computational modeling findings on behavioral performance demonstrated that the chronic pain patient group exhibited significant deficits in learning during BART (p<0.001), tending to make decisions more randomly without deliberation (p<0.01). In addition, significant brain deactivation alternation in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during the task was detected for the patient group compared with that from the control group (p<0.005). Conclusions: Long-term aberrant pain responses significantly disrupted the PFC function and behavioral performance in chronic pain patients. The joint behavioral modeling and neuroimaging techniques open a new avenue for fully understanding the cognitive impairment and brain dysfunction of risky decision making associated with chronic pain.

Optical nonreciprocity, which breaks the symmetry between forward and backward propagating optical waves, has become vital in photonic systems and enables many key applications. So far, all the existing nonreciprocal systems are implemented for linearly or randomly polarized fundamental modes. Optical vortex modes, with wavefronts that spiral around the central axis of propagation, have been extensively studied over the past decades and offer an additional degree of freedom useful in many applications. Here, we report a light-driven nonreciprocal isolation system for optical vortex modes based on topology-selective stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in chiral photonic crystal fiber. The device can be reconfigured as an amplifier or an isolator by adjusting the frequency of the control signal. The experimental results show vortex isolation of 22 decibels (dB), which is at the state of the art in fundamental mode isolators using SBS. This device may find applications in optical communications, fiber lasers, quantum information processing, and optical tweezers.

Being one of the world's seismically hazard-prone countries, the People's Republic of China (PRC) witnessed an 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12th 2008-which was reported as one of the most destructive disasters since its founding. Following this earthquake, rehabilitation was greatly required for survivors to enable them to achieve and maintain optimal independence; functioning; full physical, mental and social ability; inclusion; and participation in all aspects of life and environments. We conducted a systematic review based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to retrospectively identify, in five English databases/sources, the existing evidence about the Health-Related Rehabilitation (HRR) that was rendered to the survivors of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake between 2008 and 2018. Only 11 studies out of 828 initial studies retrieved were included in our study and reported the survivors of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake to have been aged between 10.5 and 55.7, and predominantly diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorders. Their HRR was mainly premised on physical and physiological therapies, as well as traditional Chinese medicine and digital technologies. Although all HRR interventions used were reported to be effective, none was identified as much more effective than the others in the post-earthquake era -which calls for more robust research to build upon our systematic review.
