RESUMO

Click chemistry is a powerful molecular assembly strategy for rapid functional discovery. The development of click reactions with new connecting linkage is of great importance for expanding the click chemistry toolbox. We report the first selenium-nitrogen exchange (SeNEx) click reaction between benzoselenazolones and terminal alkynes (Se-N to Se-C), which is inspired by the biochemical SeNEx between Ebselen and cysteine (Cys) residue (Se-N to Se-S). The formed selenoalkyne connection is readily elaborated, thus endowing this chemistry with multidimensional molecular diversity. Besides, this reaction is modular, predictable, and high-yielding, features fast kinetics (k2≥14.43 M-1 s-1), excellent functional group compatibility, and works well at miniaturization (nanomole-scale), opening up many interesting opportunities for organo-Se synthesis and bioconjugation, as exemplified by sequential click chemistry (coupled with ruthenium-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (RuAAC) and sulfur-fluoride exchange (SuFEx)), selenomacrocycle synthesis, nanomole-scale synthesis of Se-containing natural product library and DNA-encoded library (DEL), late-stage peptide modification and ligation, and multiple functionalization of proteins. These results indicated that SeNEx is a useful strategy for new click chemistry developments, and the established SeNEx chemistry will serve as a transformative platform in multidisciplinary fields such as synthetic chemistry, material science, chemical biology, medical chemistry, and drug discovery.

BACKGROUND: Rapeseed cake is an important agricultural waste. After enzymatic fermentation, rapeseed cake not only has specific microbial diversity but also contains a lot of fatty acids, organic acids, amino acids and their derivatives, which has potential value as a high-quality organic fertilizer. However, the effects of fermented rapeseed cake on tea rhizosphere microorganisms and soil metabolites have not been reported. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the effect of enzymatic rapeseed cake fertilizer on the soil of tea tree, and to reveal the correlation between rhizosphere soil microorganisms and nutrients/metabolites. RESULTS: The results showed that: (1) The application of enzymatic rapeseed cake increased the contents of soil organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), available nitrogen (AN), and available phosphorus (AP); increased the activities of soil urease (S-UE), soil catalase (S-CAT), soil acid phosphatase (S-ACP) and soil sucrase (S-SC); (2) The application of enzymatic rapeseed cake increased the relative abundance of beneficial rhizosphere microorganisms such as Chaetomium, Inocybe, Pseudoxanthomonas, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, and Stenotrophomonas; (3) The application of enzymatic rapeseed cake increased the contents of sugar, organic acid, and fatty acid in soil, and the key metabolic pathways were concentrated in sugar and fatty acid metabolisms; (4) The application of enzymatic rapeseed cake promoted the metabolism of sugar, organic acid, and fatty acid in soil by key rhizosphere microorganisms; enzymes and microorganisms jointly regulated the metabolic pathways of sugar and fatty acids in soil. CONCLUSIONS: Enzymatic rapeseed cake fertilizer improved the nutrient status and microbial structure of tea rhizosphere soil, which was beneficial for enhancing soil productivity in tea plantations. These findings provide new insights into the use of enzymatic rapeseed cake as an efficient organic fertilizer and expand its potential for application in tea plantations.

RESUMO

The DNA-encoded chemical library (DEL) is a powerful hit selection technique in either basic science or innovative drug discovery. With the aim to circumvent the issue concerning DNA barcode damage in a conventional on-DNA copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction (CuAAC), we have successfully developed the first DNA-compatible enolate-azide [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction. The merits of this DEL chemistry include metal-free reaction and high DNA fidelity, high conversions and easy operation, broad substrate scope, and ready access to the highly substituted 1,4,5-trisubstituted triazoles. Thus, it will not only further enrich the DEL chemistry toolbox but also will have great potential in practical DEL synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis and treatment effectiveness of early-onset coronary artery disease (EOCAD) are crucial, and non-invasive predictive biomarkers are needed for young adults. We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, a novel marker of insulin resistance, in identifying young CAD patients and predicting their risk of developing target lesion failure (TLF). METHODS: We recruited EOCAD patients (luminal narrowing ≥ 70%) and controls free from CAD (luminal narrowing < 30%), both aged 45 years or younger, from 38 hospitals in China between 2017 and 2020. EOCAD patients who underwent successful percutaneous coronary intervention were followed for incident TLF. TyG index was defined as Ln [fasting triglyceride (mg/dL) × fasting blood glucose (mg/dL)/2]. We used logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards modeling to evaluate the association of TyG index with prevalent EOCAD and incident TLF, respectively. The discriminatory ability of TyG index was assessed by the area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC). RESULTS: Among the included 1513 EOCAD patients (39.6 ± 4.4 years, 95.4% male) and 1513 age-matched controls (39.0 ± 4.4 years, 46.4% male), TyG index was positively associated with the prevalence of EOCAD (adjusted odds ratio: 1.40, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.23-1.60, per standard deviation [SD] increase in TyG index). The addition of TyG index to an empirical risk model provided an improvement in diagnostic ability for EOCAD, with a net reclassification improvement of 0.10 (95% CI 0.03-0.17, p = 0.005). During a medium of 33 month (IQR: 31-34 months) follow-up, 43 (3.3%) patients experienced TLF. Multivariate Cox regression model revealed that TyG index was an independent risk factor for TLF (adjusted hazard ratio [HR]: 2.410, 95% CI 1.07-5.42 comparing the top to bottom TyG index tertile groups; HR: 1.30, 95% CI 1.01-1.73, per SD increase in TyG index). Compared with a model of conventional risk factors alone, the addition of the TyG index modestly improved the AUC (0.722-0.734, p = 0.04) to predict TLF. CONCLUSIONS: TyG index is positively associated with prevalent EOCAD and incident TLF. TyG index appeared to be a valuable component of future efforts to improve CAD risk stratification and TLF outcome prediction among young adults.

Vibrio species are important pathogens that affect a wide range of farmed fish. Vaccination is regarded as the most efficacious strategy for fighting bacterial infections. However, the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. In the present study, a comparative transcriptome analysis was performed on the spleens from turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) induced by an inactivated bivalent vaccine (Vibrio anguillarum and Vibrio harveyi, IVVah1) at 4 week and 1 day post further challenge. Strong immune responses were induced by the bivalent vaccine, besides differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with adaptive immunity, more innate immunity-related DEGs were detected. At the late stage of vaccination, immune-related molecules associated with pattern recognition receptors, inflammatory factors, complement and coagulation cascade-related components, and antigen processing and presentation were significantly regulated, and some of them were even further up-regulated after the bacterial challenge, indicating the cooperation of multiple immune processes during the vaccine immunization process. In addition to the terms or pathways associated with the immune response, enrichment analysis revealed multiple significantly enriched terms/pathways associated with the response to stimulus/stress, homeostasis, metabolism, and biosynthesis, suggesting that a defensive status was established by the bivalent vaccine. This study furnishes new insights into the internal mechanism of immunity upon a combined vaccine administrating in turbot and lays a foundation for developing highly immunogenic vaccines in teleost.

BACKGROUND: Oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma tends to metastasize to cervical lymphatic nodes early which leads to a 50% drop of survival rate. CXCL1 could be secreted by LNMTca8113 cell induced lymphatic endothelial cells and promoted LNMTca8113 cell migration. The current study aimed to further explore the effect of CXCL1 on the proliferation and migration abilities of tongue cancer cells and the prognostic value of serum CXCL1 in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: Cell proliferation and migration ability were analysed by CCK8 assays and transwell migration assays. Immunofluorescence technique was used to show cytoskeleton. GST pull-down assay was applied to quantify the activation of GTPases. Blood samples of patients were collected and clinicopathological characteristics were analysed. RESULTS: CXCL1 could promote cancer cell proliferation in appropriate concentration by PI3K/AKT pathway. It also regulated the activation of Rho GTPases to mediate the rearrangements of cytoskeleton to promote tumour cell migration. Level of plasma CXCL1 could predict the possibility of early lymphatic metastasis and had a predictive value in progression-free survival and overall survival. CONCLUSIONS: CXCL1 could promote oral cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion in vitro and contributed theoretical knowledge for the target selection in molecular targeted therapy. Level of plasma CXCL1 might serve as a biomarker for prognosis in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma patients.

Foods are susceptible to deterioration and sour due to external environmental influences during production and storage. Coating can form a layer of physical barrier on the surface of foods to achieve the purpose of food preservation. Because of its good barrier properties and biocompatibility, prolamin-based film has been valued as a new green and environment-friendly material in the application of food preservation. Single prolamin-based film has weaknesses of poor toughness and stability, and it is necessary to select appropriate modification methods to improve the performance of film according to the application requirements. The practical application effect of film is not only affected by the raw materials and the properties of the film itself, but also affected by the selection of preparation methods and processing techniques of film-forming liquid. In this review, the properties and selection of prolamins, the forming mechanisms and processes of prolamin-based coatings, the coating techniques, and the modifications of prolamin-based coatings were systematically introduced from the perspective of food coating applications. Moreover, the defects and deficiencies in the research and development of prolamin-based coatings were also reviewed in order to provide a reference for the follow-up research on the application of prolamin-based coatings in food preservation.

In this study, we describe a Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile and aerobic bacterium, named strain MT3330T, which was isolated from the deep-sea sediment of the Mariana Trench. Growth of MT3330T occurred at 15-40 °C (optimum, 25-30 °C), pH 5.0-10.0 (optimum, 7.0-8.0) and with 0-8.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0-2.0 %). The results of phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that MT3330T represented a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae and was most closely related to Zhouia spongiae HN-Y44T (92.3 % sequence similarity). The results of genomic analysis indicated that MT3330T contains a circular chromosome of 4 365 036 bp with a DNA G+C content of 35.2 %. The predominant respiratory quinone of MT3330T was MK-6. The polar lipids of MT3330T included phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified amino lipids and four unidentified lipids. The major fatty acids of MT3330T included C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1G, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. On the basis of the results of the phylogenetic, physiological, biochemical and morphological analyses, it is suggested that strain MT3330T represents a novel genus and a novel species of the family Flavobacteriaceae, and the name Abyssalbus ytuae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MT3330T (=MCCC 1K06012T=KCTC 82823T).

Click chemistry is a concept wherein modular synthesis is used for rapid functional discovery. To this end, continuous discovery of clickable chemical transformations is the pillar to support the development of this field. This report details the development of a clickable C3-H selenylation of indole that is suitable for on-plate parallel and DNA-encoded library (SeDEL) synthesis via bioinspired LUMO activation strategy. This reaction is modular, robust and highly site-selective, and it features a simple and mild reaction system (catalyzed by nonmetallic B(C6 F5 )3 at room temperature), high yields and excellent functional group compatibility. Using this method, a library of 1350 indole-selenides was parallel synthesized in an efficient and practical manner, enabling the rapid identification of 3 ai as a promising compound with nanomolar antiproliferative activity in cancer cells via in situ phenotypic screening. These results indicate the great potential of this new clickable selenylation reaction in high-throughput medicinal chemistry and chemical biology.

BACKGROUND: Prunus pedunculata Pall, the deciduous shrub of Amygdalus subgenus in Rosaceae, is a new kind of desert oil-bearing tree. It has a long story of being planted in the West and North of China for sand fixation and desert control. In addition, the seeds of P. pedunculata are rich of oil, especially the monounsaturated fatty acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms of oil accumulation during the seed development of P. pedunculata. RESULTS: The seeds of P. pedunculata from three independent plants at 10, 18, 24, 31, 39, 45, 59 and 73 days after flowering (DAF) were obtained and the oil compositions were evaluated. It showed that oleic acid was the dominant type of oil content in the mature seeds (from 32.724% at 10DAF to 72.06% at 73DAF). Next, transcriptome sequencing for the developing seeds produced 988.795 million high quality reads and TRINITY assembled 326,271 genes for the first transcriptome for P. pedunculata. After the assembled transcriptome was evaluated by BUSCO with 85.9% completeness, we identified 195,342, 109,850 and 121,897 P. pedunculata genes aligned to NR, GO and KEGG pathway databases, respectively. Then, we predicted 23,229 likely proteins from the assembled transcriptome and identified 1917 signal peptides and 5512 transmembrane related proteins. In the developing seeds we detected 91,362 genes (average FPKM > 5) and correlation analysis indicated three possible development stages - early (10 ~ 24DAF), middle (31 ~ 45DAF) and late (59 ~ 73DAF). We next analyzed the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the developing seeds. Interestingly, compared to 10DAF the number of DEGs was increased from 4406 in 18DAF to 27,623 in 73DAF. Based on the gene annotation, we identified 753, 33, 8 and 645 DEGs related to the fatty acid biosynthesis, lipid biosynthesis, oil body and transcription factors. Notably, GPAT, DGD1, LACS2, UBC and RINO were highly expressed at the early development stage, ω6-FAD, SAD, ACP, ACCA and AHG1 were highly expressed at the middle development stage, and LACS6, DGD1, ACAT1, AGPAT, WSD1, EGY2 and oleosin genes were highly expressed at the late development stage. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first time to study the developing seed transcriptome of P. pedunculata and our findings will provide a valuable resource for future studies. More importantly, it will improve our understanding of molecular mechanisms of oil accumulation in P. pedunculata.

DNA-encoded combinatorial chemical library (DEL) technology, an approach that combines the power of genetics and chemistry, has emerged as an invaluable tool in drug discovery. Skeletal diversity plays a fundamental importance in DEL applications, and relies heavily on novel DNA-compatible chemical reactions. We report herein a phylogenic chemical transformation strategy using DNA-conjugated benzoyl hydrazine as a common versatile precursor in azole chemical expansion of DELs. DNA-compatible reactions deriving from the common benzoyl hydrazine precursor showed excellent functional group tolerance with exceptional efficiency in the synthesis of various azoles, including oxadiazoles, thiadiazoles, and triazoles, under mild reaction conditions. The phylogenic chemical transformation strategy provides DELs a facile way to expand into various unique chemical spaces with privileged scaffolds and pharmacophores.

It is possible that Pickering emulsions can optimize the transport of nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and other bioactive compounds in human physiology. So-called ultrastable Pickering emulsions are often destabilized in the gastric digestion regime if the particles are proteinaceous in nature. The present study seeks to test how the interfacial structure can be engineered via synergistic particle-particle interactions to impact the gastric coalescence of Pickering emulsions. In this study, we designed plant-based protein-particle-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions (PPM-E, with 20 wt % sunflower oil) via pea protein microgels (PPM at 1 wt %). The PPM hydrodynamic diameter is ∼250 nm. In vitro gastric digestion of PPM-E confirmed droplet coalescence within 30 min of pepsin addition. Supposedly surface-active cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs, 1-3 wt %) were added to PPM-E at pH 3.0 to determine if they could act as a barrier to interfacial pepsinolysis due to the CNC and PPM being oppositely charged at this gastric pH value. A combination of confocal microscopy, zeta potential, and Langmuir trough measurements suggested that CNCs and PPMs might form a combined layer at the O/W interface, owing to the electrostatic attraction between them. CNCs at >2 wt % inhibited the pepsinolyis of the adsorbed PPM film and thus droplet coalescence. However, increasing concentrations of CNC also increased the bulk viscosity of the PPM-E and eventually caused gelation of the emulsions, which would also delay their gastric breakdown. In conclusion, tuning the bulk and interfacial structure of Pickering emulsions via synergistic interactions between two types of particles could be an effective strategy to modify the enzymatic breakdown of such emulsions, which would have important applications in pharmaceuticals, foods, and other soft-matter applications.

In recent years, the interest in radar automatic target recognition (RATR) based on the carrier-free ultra-wideband (UWB) radar has been increasing. Compared with narrow-band and other bandwidth radars, the echo signal of the carrier-free UWB radar includes more comprehensive and detailed information with respect to the targeted object. In this paper, we first utilized 3ds Max to acquire accurate geometric models and applied a time-domain integral equation (TDIE) for echo signal acquisition under the condition that the transmitted signals had an extremely short duration period. By comparing the simulated waveform with the actual one, the accuracy of the electromagnetic modeling is verified. Furthermore, given that the actual environment is full of noise and clutter, we propose an improved two-dimensional variational mode decomposition (2D-IVMD), and an algorithm is proposed to eliminate noise and extract edge features preliminarily, which lays a foundation for further in-depth feature extraction. Then, the deep conventional neural network (DCNN) is introduced for the final recognition. The results show that the proposed methods achieve promising classification performance under the condition of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values.

Automatically recognizing the modulation of radar signals is a necessary survival technique in electronic intelligence systems. In order to avoid the complex process of the feature extracting and realize the intelligent modulation recognition of various radar signals under low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), this paper proposes a method based on intrapulse signatures of radar signals using adaptive singular value reconstruction (ASVR) and deep residual learning. Firstly, the time-frequency spectrums of radar signals under low SNRs are improved after ASVR denoising processing. Secondly, a series of image processing techniques, including binarizing and morphologic filtering, are applied to suppress the background noise in the time-frequency distribution images (TFDIs). Thirdly, the training process of the residual network is achieved using TFDIs, and classification under various conditions is realized using the new-trained network. Simulation results show that, for eight kinds of modulation signals, the proposed approach still achieves an overall probability of successful recognition of 94.1% when the SNR is only -8 dB. Outstanding performance proves the superiority and robustness of the proposed method.

Using gem-difluoromethylene alkynes as effectors, unprecedented diverse C-H activation/[4+2] annulations of simple benzoic acids are reported. The chemodivergent reaction outcomes are well-tuned by Rh/Ir-catalyzed system; in the RhIII catalysis, 3-alkenyl-1H-isochromen-1-one and 3,4-dialkylideneisochroman-1-one skeletons are afforded in a solvent-dependent manner whereas difluoromethylene-substituted 1H-isochromen-1-ones are generated under the IrIII -catalyzed system. Mechanistic studies revealed that unusually double ß-F eliminations and fluorine effect-induced regioselective reductive elimination are independently involved to enable distinct reaction modes for divergent product formations. Besides, synthetic application in both the derivatization of obtained diene products and the on-DNA synthesis of DNA-tagged difluorinated isocoumarin have been demonstrated, which manifested great potential for synthetic utility of the developed protocols.

Autopolyploids often show growth advantages over their diploid progenitors because of their increased photosynthetic activity; however, the underlying molecular basis of such mechanism remains elusive. In this study, we aimed to characterize autotetraploid pak choi (Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis) at the physiological, cellular and molecular levels. Autotetraploid pak choi has thicker leaves than its diploid counterparts, with relatively larger intercellular spaces and cell size and greater grana thylakoid height. Photosynthetic data showed that the relative electron transport rate (rETR) was markedly higher in autotetraploid than in diploid pak choi. Transcriptomic data revealed that the expressions of genes involved in 'photosynthesis' biological process and 'thylakoids' cellular component were mainly regulated in autotetraploids. Overall, our findings suggested that the increased rETR in the thylakoids contributed to the increased photosynthetic capacity of autotetraploid leaves. Furthermore, we found that the enhanced rETR is associated with increased BrPetC expression, which is likely altered by histone modification. The ectopic expression of BrPetC in Arabidopsis thaliana led to increased rETR and biomass, which were decreased in BrPetC-silenced pak choi. Autotetraploid pak choi also shows altered hormone levels, which was likely responsible for the increased drought resistance and the impaired powdery mildew resistance of this lineage. Our findings further our understanding on how autotetraploidy provides growth advantages to plants.

BACKGROUND: Different mulches have variable effects on soil physicochemical characteristics, bacterial and fungal communities and ecosystem functions. However, the information about soil microbial diversity, community structure and ecosystem function in tea plantation under different mulching patterns was limited. In this study, we investigated bacterial and fungal communities of tea plantation soils under polyethylene film and peanut hull mulching using high-throughput 16S rRNA and ITS rDNA gene Illumina sequencing. RESULTS: The results showed that the dominant bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria and Chloroflexi, and the dominant fungal phyla were Ascomycota, Mortierellomycota and Basidiomycota in all samples, but different mulching patterns affected the distribution of microbial communities. At the phylum level, the relative abundance of Nitrospirae in peanut hull mulching soils (3.24%) was significantly higher than that in polyethylene film mulching soils (1.21%) in bacterial communities, and the relative abundances of Mortierellomycota and Basidiomycota in peanut hull mulching soils (33.72, 21.93%) was significantly higher than that in polyethylene film mulching soils (14.88, 6.53%) in fungal communities. Peanut hull mulching increased the diversity of fungal communities in 0-20 cm soils and the diversity of bacterial communities in 20-40 cm soils. At the microbial functional level, there was an enrichment of bacterial functional features, including amino acid transport and metabolism and energy production and conversion, and there was an enrichment of fungal functional features, including undefined saprotrophs, plant pathogens and soils aprotrophs. CONCLUSIONS: Unique distributions of bacterial and fungal communities were observed in soils under organic mulching. Thus, we believe that the organic mulching has a positive regulatory effect on the soil bacterial and fungal communities and ecosystem functions, and so, is more suitable for tea plantation.

BACKGROUND: Cow manure is not only an agricultural waste, but also an organic fertilizer resource. The application of organic fertilizer is a feasible practice to mitigate the soil degradation caused by overuse of chemical fertilizers, which can affect the bacterial diversity and community composition in soils. However, to our knowledge, the information about the soil bacterial diversity and composition in tea plantation applied with cow manure fertilization was limited. In this study, we performed one field trial to research the response of the soil bacterial community to cow manure fertilization compared with urea fertilization using the high-throughput sequencing technique of 16S rRNA genes, and analyzed the relationship between the soil bacterial community and soil characteristics during different tea-picking seasons using the Spearman's rank correlation analysis. RESULTS: The results showed that the soil bacterial communities were dominated by Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria and Actinobacteria across all tea-picking seasons. Therein, there were significant differences of bacterial communities in soils with cow manure fertilization (CMF) and urea fertilization (UF) in three seasons: the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes in CMF was significantly higher than that in UF and CK in spring, and the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes in CMF was significantly higher than that in UF and CK in autumn. So, the distribution of the dominant phyla was mainly affected by cow manure fertilization. The diversity of bacterial communities in soils with cow manure fertilization was higher than that in soils with urea fertilization, and was the highest in summer. Moreover, soil pH, OM and AK were important environmental properties affecting the soil bacterial community structure in tea plantation. CONCLUSIONS: Although different fertilizers and seasons affect the diversity and structure of soil microorganisms, the application of cow manure can not only improve the diversity of soil bacteria, but also effectively regulate the structure of soil bacterial community in tea plantation. So, cow manure fertilization is more suitable for tea plantation.

Herein, we report a novel approach that involves Pickering stabilization of micometer-sized liquid crystal (LC) droplets with biocompatible soft materials such as a whey protein microgel (WPM) to facilitate the analysis of analyte-induced configurational transition of the LC droplets. The WPM particles were able to irreversibly adsorb at the LC-water interface, and the resulting WPM-stabilized LC droplets possessed a remarkable stability against coalescence over time. Although the LC droplets were successfully protected by a continuous network of the WPM layer, the LC-water interface was still accessible for small molecules such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) that could diffuse through the meshes of the adsorbed WPM network or through the interfacial pores and induce an LC response. This approach was exploited to investigate the dynamic range of the WPM-stabilized LC droplet response to SDS. Nevertheless, the presence of the unadsorbed WPM in the aqueous medium reduced the access of SDS molecules to the LC droplets, thus suppressing the configuration transition. An improved LC response to SDS with a lower detection limit was achieved after washing off the unadsorbed WPM. Interestingly, the LC exhibited a detection limit as low as ∼0.85 mM for SDS within the initial WPM concentration ranging from 0.005 to 0.1 wt %. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the dose-response behavior was strongly influenced by the number of droplets exposed to the aqueous analytes and the type of surfactants such as anionic SDS, cationic dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), and nonionic tetra(ethylene glycol)monododecyl ether (C12E4). Thus, our results address key issues associated with the quantification of aqueous analytes and provide a promising colloidal platform toward the development of new classes of biocompatible LC droplet-based optical sensors.

BACKGROUND: The management of diagonal branch (D) occlusion is still controversary. The association between the flow loss of D and the prognosis remains unclear. We aim to detect the impact of D flow on cardiac function and clinical outcomes in patients with anterior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). METHODS: Patients with anterior STEMI undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) at our clinic between October 2015 and October 2018were reviewed. Anterior STEMI due to left anterior descending artery (LAD) occlusion with or without loss of the main D flow (TIMI grade 0-1 or 2-3) was enrolled in the analysis. The short- and long-term incidence of major adverse cardiac events (MACEs, a composite of all-cause death, target vessel revascularization and reinfarction) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 392 patients (mean age of 63.9 years) with anterior STEMI treated with primary PCI was enrolled in the study. They were divided into two groups, loss (TIMI grade 0-1, n = 69) and no loss (TIMI grade2-3, n = 323) of D flow, before primary PCI. Compared with the group without loss of D flow, the group with loss of D flow showed a lower LVEF post PCI (41.0% vs. 48.8%, p = 0.003). Meanwhile, loss of D flow resulted in the higher in-hospital, one-month, and 18-month incidence of MACEs, especially in all-cause mortality (all p < 0.05). Landmark analysis further indicated that the significant differences in 18-month outcomes between the two groups mainly resulted from the differences during the hospitalization. In addition, multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis found that D flow loss before primary PCI was independent factor predicting short- and long-term outcomes in patients with anterior STEMI. CONCLUSION: Loss of the main D flow in anterior STEMI patients was independently associated with the higher in-hospital incidences of MACEs and all-cause death as well as the lower LVEF.
