RESUMO

Seawater-flow- and -evaporation-induced electricity generation holds significant promise in advancing next-generation sustainable energy technologies. This method relies on the electrokinetic effect but faces substantial limitations when operating in a highly ion-concentrated environment, for example, natural seawater. We present herein a novel solution using calcium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, C12H6Ca2O19·2H2O) for seawater-evaporation-induced electricity generation. Remarkably, Ca-MOFs show an open-circuit voltage of 0.4 V and a short-circuit current of 14 µA when immersed in seawater under natural conditions. Our experiments and simulations revealed that sodium (Na) ions selectively transport within sub-nanochannels of these synthetic superhydrophilic MOFs. This selective ion transport engenders a unipolar solution flow, which drives the electricity generation behavior in seawater. This work not only showcases an effective Ca-MOF for electricity generation through seawater flow/evaporation but also contributes significantly to our understanding of water-driven energy harvesting technologies and their potential applications beyond this specific context.

RESUMO

The corrosion behaviors of four pure metals (Fe, Ni, Mo and Cr) in the presence of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) were investigated in enriched artificial seawater (EASW) after 14-day incubation. Metal Fe and metal Ni experienced weight losses of 1.96 mg cm-2 and 1.26 mg cm-2, respectively. In contrast, metal Mo and metal Cr exhibited minimal weight losses, with values of only 0.05 mg cm-2 and 0.03 mg cm-2, respectively. In comparison to Mo (2.2 × 106 cells cm-2) or Cr (1.4 × 106 cells cm-2) surface, the sessile cell counts on Fe (4.0 × 107 cells cm-2) or Ni (3.1 × 107 cells cm-2) surface was higher.

RESUMO

Two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different Cu-centered coordination structures were synthesized. By introducing 4,4-bipyridine as a linker in the Cu-MOFs, we have discovered that Cu-O, instead of Cu-N, is the active site with higher electrocatalytical activity towards ascorbic acid, which is essential to understand and develop Cu-based ascorbic acid sensors.

RESUMO

Biomass-derived carbon materials have received extensive attention for use in high-performance electrocatalysts. In this study, a highly efficient electrocatalyst is developed with Co nanoparticles anchored on N-doped porous carbon material (CoNC) by using yeast as a biomass precursor through a facial activation and pyrolysis process. CoNC exhibits comparable catalytic activity with commercial 20 % Pt/C for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with a half-wave potential of 0.854 V. A home-made primary Zn-air battery exhibited an open circuit potential of 1.45 V and a peak power density of 188 mW cm-2 . Moreover, the discharge voltage of the primary battery maintained at a stable value up to 9 days. The enhanced performance of CoNC was probably ascribed to its high content of pyridinic-N and graphitic-N species, extra Co loading and porous structure, which provided sufficient active sites and channels to promote mass/electron transfer for ORR. This work provides a promising strategy to develop an efficient non-noble metal carbon-based electrocatalyst for fuel cells and metal-air batteries.

RESUMO

Stainless steels (SS) are not immune to microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) especially in the presence of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). It is necessary to study the influence of alloying elements on the MIC. SRB MIC behaviors of four stainless steels (2205 SS, 316L SS, 304 SS, and 410 SS), with different alloying element compositions were compared after 14 days of incubation at 37°C in enriched artificial seawater inoculated with Desulfovibrio sp. The sessile cell sequence was 410 SS > 316L SS > 304 SS > 2205 SS, inversely proportional to Cr content. The uniform corrosion rate (based on weight loss) sequence was 410 SS > 304 SS > 316L SS > 2205 SS, which matches the pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) sequence inversely. 410 SS with the lowest Cr and Mo contents suffered the most severe pitting, with pit depth of 35 µm and weight loss of 0.75 mg/cm2 (0.91 mm/a pitting rate and 25 µm/a uniform corrosion rate). The other three stainless steels with higher Cr and Mo contents suffered only metastable pits. The semiconductor characteristics and the re-passivation abilities of the passive films were found to be affected by Cr and Mo contents.

RESUMO

In this work, we have successfully developed Cu-MOF/CuO/NiO nanocomposites (NCs) and employed as a novel electrochemical sensing platform in catechol (CC) detection. The Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) along Energy dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are carried out to characterize the as-fabricated Cu-MOF/CuO/NiO NCs. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) techniques have used to obtain oxidation peak currents of CC. Glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with Cu-MOF/CuO/NiO has exposed the superb EC properties representing low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.0078 µM (S/N = 3). To assess the practicability of Cu-MOF/CuO/NiO based sensing medium, it has been used to detect CC from two varieties of tea, namely black and green. Thus, we anticipate that this structural integration strategy possesses encouraging application potential in sensing podium and material synthesis.

RESUMO

Crevice corrosion of X80 carbon steel in simulated seawater with the presence of SRB was studied by surface analysis and electrochemical measurements. The electrode inside crevice was seriously corroded. Large amount of corrosion products accumulated along the crevice mouth. Galvanic current densities measurements confirmed that there was a galvanic effect between the carbon steel at the crevice interior and exterior during the crevice corrosion. The difference in the sessile SRB cells quantities and SRB biofilms developments inside and outside crevice caused the galvanic effect between the carbon steel inside and outside the crevice, which further induced crevice corrosion. Increased crevice width reduced the galvanic effect, resulting in less crevice corrosion in wider crevice.

RESUMO

The development of crystal-facet metal oxide heterostructures has been of great interest owing to their rational design and multifunctional properties at the nanoscale level. Herein, we report a facile solution-based method for the synthesis of single-crystal Cu2O nanostructures (i.e. Cu2O-CuO) as a core. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with varying concentrations are fabricated on the surface of Cu2O extended hexapods (EHPs) in ethanol solution at room temperature via self-assembly, where copper acts as a sacrificial model and a stabilizer as well. The Cu2O crystals displayed a good sensing activity toward BPA oxidation owing to their high energy facets, dangling bonds and great proportion of surface copper atoms. Structural, morphological, chemical and vibrational investigations were performed in detail, presenting high crystallinity of hybrid nanocomposites and Cu2O-CuO heterojunction positions along with the growth of GQDs on the core of Cu2O-CuO crystals. The electrochemical sensing performance of the as-fabricated Cu2O-CuO@GQD EHPs was monitored for the determination of bisphenol A (BPA) as an early diagnostic marker and environmental contaminant. The synergistic effects of the boosted surface area, exposed Cu {111} crystallographic planes and mixed copper valences enhance redox reaction kinetics by increasing the electron shuttling rate at the electrode-analyte junction. Benefitting from the improved electrocatalytic activity for BPA oxidation, the electrochemical sensor displayed the lowest limit of detection (≤1 nM), good chemical stability, a broad linear range (2 nM-11 mM), and high sensitivity (636 µA mM-1 cm-2). The Cu2O-CuO@GQD EHP-based sensing platform was used for BPA detection in water and human serum samples. We have also constructed a pioneering electrochemical sensing platform for BPA detection in live cells, which might be used as a marker for early disease diagnosis.

RESUMO

The exploration of an efficient nonprecious electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical to the commercialization of various electrochemical energy-conversion devices. Herein, a cobalt-gluconate-derived nitrogen and sulfur dual-doped micro/mesoporous carbon sphere (Co9S8/N, S-MCS) with encapsulated high-density cobalt sulfide (Co9S8) nanocrystals is developed by annealing and subsequent high-temperature vulcanization. Particularly, the vulcanization temperature has a critical impact on the formation of high-density Co9S8 nanocrystals. Benefiting from the favorable material characteristics of large surface area, abundant micro/mesopores and high graphitic nanostructures, as well as the synergistic effects between high-density Co9S8 nanocrystals and N, S-dual doped graphitic carbon shells, the resulting catalyst demonstrates superior ORR catalytic activity and durability compared to platinum/carbon (Pt/C) catalyst. More notably, the proposed approach can be extended potentially to fabricate other transition metal sulfide (or oxide, carbide) based electrocatalysts.

RESUMO

In this study, the corrosion behavior of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy in a high salinity environment containing Aspergillus niger was investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, surface analysis and electrochemical measurement. Results demonstrated that uniform and localized corrosion rates of the alloy in the presence of A. niger were approximately 3.7 and 22.4 times, respectively, of that in the absence A. niger. This higher corrosion rate was attributed to accelerated anode and cathode reactions from the actions of A. niger biofilm. Additionally, organic acid corrosion caused by the presence of A. niger was confirmed to be the main cause for the corrosion of aluminum alloy.
