RESUMO

As is well known, a light beam with a helical phase carries an optical orbital angular momentum (OAM), which can cause the orbital motion of trapped microparticles around the beam axis. Usually, the speed of the orbital motion is uniform along the azimuthal direction and depends on the amount of OAM and the light intensity. Here, we present the reverse customized method to tailor the nonuniform local OAM density along the azimuthal direction of the focal field, which has a hybrid polarization distribution and maintains a doughnut-shaped intensity profile. Theoretical analysis and experimental results about the orbital motion of the trapped polystyrene sphere show that the nonuniform local OAM density can be tailored by manipulating the polarization states of the focal field. Our results provide an ingenious way to control the local tangential optical force and the speed of the orbital motion of particles driven by the local OAM density and will promote exciting possibilities for exploring ways to control the mechanical dynamics of microparticles in optical trapping and microfluidics.

Optical needle has become a hot research topic in recent years, due to the excellent properties and potential applications. To achieve a sub-diffraction optical needle, there are three common methods including planar diffractive lenses, reflective mirrors or axicons, and high-NA objective lenses with the designed phase or amplitude elements. Here, we propose a new kind of designed phase and amplitude element called the sinusoidal-amplitude binary phase mask (SA-BPM), which modulates the amplitude and phase distributions of the incident vector optical fields (VOFs) simultaneously. Based on Richards-Wolf vector diffraction integral, the corresponding parameters of SA-BPM and the optimal optical needle length are calculated by exhaustive method and genetic algorithm. We further upgrade the SA-BPM by adding a Gaussian function in the amplitude modulation, and design the Gaussian SA-BPM (GSA-BPM). We find that the ultra-long optical needles are achieved with the SA-BPM and GSA-BPM, and the depth of focus of the optical needles are improved by 30%-70% compared with the case of binary phase mask. Such SA-BPM and GSA-BPM we proposed have great potential for manipulation and utilization of the ultra-long optical needles.

We theoretically design and experimentally generate the flexibly modulated Poincaré sphere vector optical field (PS-VOF), which can be constructed by flattening the Poincaré sphere surface. This new kind of PS-VOF provides additional degrees of freedom to modulate the spatial structure of polarization based on Poincaré sphere. The focal property of the PS-VOF is further studied, and we focus on studying the polarization coverage of the Poincaré sphere in the focal plane. In focusing process, the conversion and annihilation of spin angular momentum are presented. In addition, when the proportion of right-handed polarizations from the northern hemisphere of the Poincaré sphere satisfies Golden ratio (0.618) in the input plane, a full PS-VOF with high quality can be achieved in the focal plane. We hope this study of PS-VOF in both input and focal planes can enrich the family of VOFs, provide a new avenue in studying VOFs based on the Poincaré sphere, and can be potentially applied in the regions with sensitivity to polarizations.

With fractal amplitude masks of the Sierpinski carpet and Sierpinski triangle, we theoretically and experimentally present the diffraction properties and applications of spatially structured optical fields, including the vector optical field, vortex optical field, and vortex vector optical field. The diffraction patterns of the vector optical fields exhibit self-similarity, and the characteristics of the vector optical fields are maintained in every diffraction peak. The diffraction patterns of the vortex optical fields and vortex vector optical fields exhibit triangular lattice arrays, and the vortex topological charge can be determined by the number of peak spots in the triangular lattice array. We hope these diffraction properties with fractal amplitude masks can be applied not only in detecting topological charges of spatially structured optical fields, but also in generating flexibly controlled diffraction patterns and lattice arrays, which may be useful in optical machining, optical trapping, and information transmission.

CONTEXT: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) could induce the "cytokine storm" due to overactivation of immune system and accompanied by acute respiratory distress syndrome as a serious complication. Vitamin C has been effective in improving lung function of patients by reducing inflammation. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to explore the therapeutic effects of high-dose vitamin C supplementation for patients with COVID-19 using meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: Published studies were searched from PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, EMBASE, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases up to August 2022 using the terms "vitamin C" and "COVID-19". Data analyses were performed independently by 2 researchers using the PRISMA guidelines. DATA EXTRACTION: Heterogeneity between the included studies was assessed using I2 statistics. When I2 ≥50%, the random-effects model was used; otherwise, a fixed-effects model was applied. Stata 14.0 software was used to pool data by standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% CIs or odds ratios (ORs) with 95% CIs. DATA ANALYSIS: The 14 studies had a total of 751 patients and 1583 control participants in 7 randomized controlled trials and 7 retrospective studies. The vitamin C supplement significantly increased ferritin (SMD = 0.272; 95% CI: 0.059 to 0.485; P = 0.012) and lymphocyte count levels (SMD = 0.376; 95% CI: 0.153 to 0.599; P = 0.001) in patients with COVID-19. Patients administered vitamin C in the length of intensive care unit staying (SMD = 0.226; 95% CI: 0.073 to 0.379; P = 0.004). Intake of vitamin C prominently alleviate disease aggravation (OR = 0.344, 95%CI: 0.135 to 0.873, P = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: High-dose vitamin C supplementation can alleviate inflammatory response and hinder the aggravation of COVID-19.

Sleep disorders are common non-motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The characteristics and impact of multiple comorbid sleep disorders remain to be elucidated. Our goal was to investigate the characteristics of various sleep disorder comorbidities, and their association with motor complications and the impact on the quality of life in PD patients. In this multicenter, observational, cross-sectional study, data concerning the clinical characteristics of complicated sleep disorders were collected from PD patients treated at 40 different hospitals in Shanghai. Sleep disorders were evaluated using the PD Sleep Scale-2, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder Questionnaire-Hong Kong, and the International Restless Legs Scale. Among the 1006 subjects evaluated, 77.53% exhibited signs of sleep disorders, and most had multiple sleep disorders (n = 502, 49.9%). A smaller percentage of patients with sleep disorders had a single disorder (n = 278, 27.6%). Furthermore, an increased number of sleep disorders, including nighttime problems, excessive daytime sleepiness, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, and restless legs syndrome was a significant contributor to a poor quality of life (ß = 4.33, CI: 3.33-5.33, P for trend <0.001), even when controlling for multiple factors. Moreover, motor complications partially mediated this relationship (indirect effect: ß = 0.355, 95% boot CI: 0.134, 0.652).Our study showed that a large proportion of PD patients suffer from multiple comorbid sleep disorders, which greatly decreases the quality of life in PD patients and is partially mediated by motor complications.

The interaction between metal particles was calculated based on the discrete dipole method. The calculated results revealed that the multiple interactions in a collection of metal particles are dominated by the interaction between the neighboring particles. Thus, a two-particle approximation was deduced and applied to estimate the optical absorption and near-field enhancement property of Ag-Si3N4 composite films. The calculated results indicated that the interaction between Ag particles will induce extra absorption near the surface plasmon resonance peak and improve the near-field enhancement property of composite films. Calculated results were consistent with the experimental results.

RESUMO

Ag-Si3N4 composite films with metal fractions of 20% and 33% were prepared by magnetron sputtering. The Ag particles inside the composite films were less than 5 nm in radius. The optical absorption and near-field enhancement properties of the composite films were measured. On the plots of optical absorption, the extra absorption was observed as well as the surface plasmon resonance absorption. The intensity of the extra absorption depended on the particle size and metal fraction. Moreover, the composite films with higher extra absorption had better near-field enhancement properties. These phenomena were possibly related with the interaction between Ag particles in composite films.
