RESUMO

Grief-related beliefs play an important role in bereavement adjustment. This study aimed to investigate the patterns and correlates of grief-related beliefs among recently bereaved adults (n = 311). Latent class analysis results suggested three meaningful grief belief classes could be identified: the High grief belief class (24.1%), Predominantly counterfactual thoughts class (42.4%), and Low belief class (33.4%). Members in the High grief belief class reported the highest levels of grief symptoms, depression and PTSD symptoms, loneliness, and functional impairment. Compared with the Low belief class, unmarried people, people in poor health, individuals who lost parents, partners, or children, and those who experienced violent or unexpected death were more likely to belong to the High grief belief class. Findings of this study support the importance of examining grief-related cognitions in research and clinical practice, especially counterfactual thoughts about the death, which may need to be specifically screened and targeted in treatment.

RESUMO

Bereavement during the COVID-19 pandemic may have some unique characteristics that become potential risk factors (e.g., absence of grief rituals, no opportunity to say goodbye to the deceased and loneliness caused by social distancing) for acute grief. Avoidance processes could be significant mediators in the context of the pandemic. The current study aimed to investigate whether and how these COVID-19-related risk factors were related to acute grief severity. Bereaved adults (n = 319) who lost significant others during the COVID-19 pandemic completed a self-report questionnaire package measuring COVID-19-related factors, grief severity and depressive and anxious avoidance. Regression analyses suggested that among the three potential risk factors (loneliness, grief rituals and opportunity to say goodbye), loneliness was significantly associated with acute grief after controlling for basic demographic and loss-related information. Structural equation models suggested that depressive avoidance and anxious avoidance partially mediated the associations of loneliness with acute grief severity. The findings indicate that dealing with loss during the COVID-19 pandemic warrants further exploration concerning how potential environmental risk factors may impede adaptation to loss. Depressive and anxious avoidance processes may play important roles in grief interventions for isolated and lonely bereaved people.

RESUMO

The Typical Beliefs Questionnaire (TBQ) assesses common grief-related cognitions, which demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties in a treatment-seeking sample with prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Chinese shidu parents (bereaved parents over the age of 49 who have lost their only child) are at a high risk of PGD. The current study aimed to examine psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the TBQ (TBQ-C) in a community sample of shidu parents with and without PGD, to compare this to the original validation clinical sample in the United States bereaved of any close relationship and to consider its use as a clinical tool. We examined the rate of positive endorsement, factor structure, internal consistency and validity of the TBQ-C in 310 community-based shidu parents (including 102 who met the criteria for PGD). Results showed that the rate of positive endorsement for each item ranged from 7.2% to 48.6% among non-PGD participants and from 20.6% to 92.2% among PGD participants. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the original five-factor structure fit both the non-PGD and PGD shidu parents. The TBQ-C showed acceptable internal consistency and satisfactory convergent and concurrent validity in both groups. It had good discriminant validity and can be helpful in distinguishing shidu parents with and without PGD. The TBQ-C can be used to investigate common grief-related beliefs that may be problematic for both shidu parents with and without PGD.

RESUMO

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic brought new challenges to mourning and growth of bereaved. The purpose is to explore the relationship between the prolonged grief (PG) symptoms and the post-traumatic growth (PTG) of recently bereaved people during the COVID-19 period, and the mediating role of meaning making. 305 participants were recruited to complete the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Inventory of Complicated Grief, and Integration of Stressful Life Experiences Scale. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses and Medcurve in SPSS were adapted to test the hypotheses. The results revealed that there was a curvilinear relationship between PG and PTG and meaning making had a completely mediating effect on this relationship. Different intervention goals - whether alleviating distress or cultivating growth - should be set up according to the level of grief for recently bereaved individuals during COVID-19. More attention should be paid to the role of meaning making in the future clinical practice.

RESUMO

Introduction: An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that altered microbial diversity and function (such as metabolites), or ecological disorders, regulate bowel-brain axis involvement in the pathophysiologic processes in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The dysregulation of microbes and their metabolites can be a double-edged sword in AD, presenting the possibility of microbiome-based treatment options. This review describes the link between ecological imbalances and AD, the interactions between AD treatment modalities and the microbiota, and the potential of interventions such as prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, and dietary interventions as complementary therapeutic strategies targeting AD pathogenesis and progression. Survey methodology: Articles from PubMed and china.com on intestinal flora and AD were summarized to analyze the data and conclusions carefully to ensure the comprehensiveness, completeness, and accuracy of this review. Conclusions: Regulating the gut flora ecological balance upregulates neurotrophic factor expression, regulates the microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis, and suppresses the inflammatory responses. Based on emerging research, this review explored novel directions for future AD research and clinical interventions, injecting new vitality into microbiota research development.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe effects of acupuncture combined speech therapy for cerebral palsy children with linguistic retardation. METHODS: Totally 132 cerebral palsy children were randomly assigned to the speech training group (Group A, 44 cases) and the routine acupuncture combined speech training group (Group B, 44 cases), and the acupuncture combined speech training group (Group C, 44 cases). Patients in Group A received one to one training including game therapy, therapy of communication attitudes, and so on. Those in the other two groups were needed at Baihui (GV20), Sishencong (EX-HN1), the first language zone, the second language zone, and the third language zone. Those in Group B were treated with electric needling and then speech training. Those in Group C were treated with language training, while needling with needle maintaining for 40 min. All patients were treated once daily, 5 times per week, 20 times as one course of treatment, 6 courses in total. The efficacy was assessed using S-S phonetic speech developmental retardation examination (CRRC version). The development quotient (DQ) was observed referring to the Gesell intellectual development scale before treatment, after 3 and 6 treatment courses. RESULTS: Compared with Group A (the total effective rate: 51.3%, DQ value: 58.1 +/- 13.3), better effects were obtained in Group B (the total effective rate: 77.5%, DQ value: 60.4 +/- 13.5) and Group C (the total effective rate: 81.0%, DQ value: 64.0 +/- 11.6) (all P < 0.05). There was no statistical difference in the total effective rate or post-treatment DQ value between Group B and Group C (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture combined speech therapy showed obvious effects on cerebral palsy children with linguistic retardation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the protective effects of mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channel opener diazoxide on hyperoxia-induced apoptosis of type II alveolar epithelial cells (A549 cells) and possible mechanisms. METHODS: A549 cells were cultured in vitro and divided randomly into control, hyperoxia and diazoxide group. The hyperoxia group was exposed to a mixture of O2 (900 mL/L) and CO2 (50 mL/L) for 10 minutes, then cultured in a closed environment. The diazoxide group was pretreated with diazoxide of 100 µmol/L for 24 hrs before hyperxia induction. The cells were collected 12, 24 and 48 hrs after culture. The morphologic changes of A549 cells were observed under an inverted microscope. A549 cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. The expression of Omi/HtrA2 in the endochylema of A549 cells was determined by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: A549 cells were damaged and the changes in morphology of the cells were serious in the hyperoxia group. The apoptosis rate of A549 cells and the expression of Omi/HtrA2 in the endochylema increased in the hyperoxia group compared with the control group (P<0.05). The growth and the morphology of A549 cells were greatly improved and the cell injuries were obviously alleviated in the diazoxide group. The expression of Omi/HtrA2 in the endochylema and the apoptosis rate of A549 cells were significantly reduced in the diazoxide group compared with the hyperoxia group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Diazoxide as an opener of mitoKATP channel can reduce the expression of Omi/HtrA2 and the apoptosis rate of A549 cells, thus relieves the injury of A549 cells induced by hyperoxia.

RESUMO

COVID-19 has caused nearly 4.3 million deaths all around the world. People who have experienced loss during this special period may find it difficult to adapt to life after loss, and may even suffer from prolonged grief disorder or other mental health problems. However, there is a huge gap of grief research in China, with almost no comprehensive grief intervention training system or very few professional grief consultants. Considering the large number of bereaved individuals who are suffering from grief and other mental health problems, it is significant to develop a suitable and effective intervention protocol immediately. This article illustrates a study protocol initiated by a Chinese university to investigate the mental health of bereaved individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic and train grief counselors to provide grief counseling to the bereaved, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of the grief counseling. The method is as follows: (1) 300 psychological counselors will be recruited to attend the grief counseling training. Assessments will be conducted at three time points: baseline (T0), after the basic training (T1), and after the advanced training (T2); (2) 500 bereaved Chinese will be recruit to join the online survey and will be assessed at two time points with a six-month interval; and (3) a two-armed (grief counseling versus wait-list controls) RCT (random control trials) will be conducted with 160 bereaved individuals. Assessments will be conducted at three time points: before randomization (baseline, T0), at the post-counseling (T1), and three months after the post-counseling (T2). Primary outcomes will be assessed by the Prolonged Grief Questionnaire (PG-13), the 20-item PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI). This research will help develop grief research and grief counseling in China, as well as provide professional mental health services for individuals who may suffer from grief-related disorders in the future.

RESUMO

ZnO nanorod arrays were fabricated on glass through hydrothermal way. Then a thin SiO2 film was covered on ZnO nanorod arrays using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique, and modified by stearic acid. It was found that SiO2 film only had slight effects on the contact angle and transmittance of ZnO nanorod arrays. However, it had brought a huge improvement in the UV durability of superhydrophobic ZnO nanorod arrays. The results showed that the water contact angle remains constantly at 160.5° even UV irradiation time exceeded 50 h when the deposition time of PLD was about 10 min. This structure with UV-durable superhydrophobicity and highly transmittance on glass substrate can be served as front materials in solar cells.
