OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the available literature on the association between characteristics of the food environment and household food insecurity. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. METHODS: Studies published until January 9th, 2023, were searched in the PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, EMBASE and LILACS databases. The included studies were summarized with a narrative synthesis with information on the study location, population studied, prevalence and type of measure/instrument used to assess food (in)security, method of evaluating the food environment and measure between food insecurity and food environment. RESULTS: Twenty-two articles were included. Different methods were used to measure food security and the food environment. Most food insecurity assessment tools assessed the dimension of access to food, more precisely economic access. The dimensions of the food environment most evaluated were food availability and affordability. An association between characteristics of the food environment and food insecurity was found in 18 of these studies. Homes with food insecurity have a greater availability of unhealthy foods, more frequent purchasing of foods in convenience stores and small markets as well as a lower availability of healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables. CONCLUSIONS: This review revealed that household food insecurity was associated with the food environment, highlighting the importance of policies to promote healthy diets, especially in vulnerable communities. Few studies were found in the Global South, demonstrating the gap in this knowledge in these locations.

1. The objectives of this study were to establish the use of the fluorophores Hoechst 33342 and propidium iodide for the evaluation of sperm plasma membrane integrity and to identify an adequate hypoosmotic solution for the evaluation of sperm membrane functionality in quails.2. Sperm samples were collected from the vas deferens of nine quails. After initial evaluation, the samples were subjected to a flash-frozen assay. Three treatments with the following proportions of fresh sperm and sperm subjected to flash freezing were prepared as follows: 100:0 (T100), 50:50 (T50), and 0:100 (T0). The hypoosmotic swelling test used distilled water (0 mOsm/l) and fructose solutions (50, 100, and 200 mOsm/l).3. Immediately after recovery, the samples showed 75.6 ± 5.0% motility with vigour of 3.7 ± 0.3 and 96.1 ± 0.5% of the sperm appeared normal. The membrane integrity test showed 62.2 ± 5.2% intact sperm at T100, 29.0 ± 4.1% at T50 and 0.1 ± 0.1% at T0. Moreover, a greater number of reactive sperm (74.7 ± 6.7%) were observed when incubated in distilled water (0 mOsm/l) in comparison to other solutions (P < 0.05).4. The association of fluorescent probes composed of Hoechst 33342 and propidium iodide provided an efficient assessment of the integrity of the plasmatic membrane of quail spermatozoa. However, the study identified that the hypoosmotic swelling test has little predictive value regarding sperm membrane functionality in this species.

BACKGROUND: Despite the global decline in the detection of leprosy cases, its incidence has remained unchanged in certain settings and requires the determination of the factors linked to its persistence. We examined the spatial and space-time distribution of leprosy and the influence of social vulnerability on the occurrence of the disease in an endemic area of Northeast Brazil. METHODS: We performed an ecological study of all leprosy cases reported by Sergipe state, Northeast Brazil from 2001 to 2015, to examine the association of the Social Vulnerability Index and the prevalence and persistence of leprosy among the State's municipalities. Socio-economic and leprosy surveillance information was collected from the Brazilian information systems, and a Bayesian empirical local model was used to identify fluctuations of the indicators. Spatial and space-time clusters were identified using scan spatial statistic tests and to measure the municipalities' relative risk of leprosy. RESULTS: Leprosy clusters and burden of disease had a strong statistical association with the municipalities' Social Vulnerability Index. Municipalities with a high social vulnerability had higher leprosy incidence, multibacillary leprosy and newly diagnosed cases with grade 2 disability than areas with low social vulnerability. CONCLUSION: Social vulnerability is strongly associated with leprosy transmission and maintenance of disease incidence. Leprosy control programmes should be targeted to the populations with high social vulnerability.

Rivers are known to be major contributors to eutrophication in marine coastal waters, but little is known on the short-term impact of freshwater surges on the structure and functioning of the marine plankton community. The effect of adding river water, reducing the salinity by 15 and 30%, on an autumn plankton community in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon (Thau Lagoon, France) was determined during a 6-day mesocosm experiment. Adding river water brought not only nutrients but also chlorophyceans that did not survive in the brackish mesocosm waters. The addition of water led to initial increases (days 1-2) in bacterial production as well as increases in the abundances of bacterioplankton and picoeukaryotes. After day 3, the increases were more significant for diatoms and dinoflagellates that were already present in the Thau Lagoon water (mainly Pseudo-nitzschia spp. group delicatissima and Prorocentrum triestinum) and other larger organisms (tintinnids, rotifers). At the same time, the abundances of bacterioplankton, cyanobacteria, and picoeukaryote fell, some nutrients (NH4+, SiO43-) returned to pre-input levels, and the plankton structure moved from a trophic food web based on secondary production to the accumulation of primary producers in the mesocosms with added river water. Our results also show that, after freshwater inputs, there is rapid emergence of plankton species that are potentially harmful to living organisms. This suggests that flash flood events may lead to sanitary issues, other than pathogens, in exploited marine areas.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a powerful stimulator of osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption. Production of IL-6 is modulated by polymorphisms, and higher levels of this cytokine are found locally in patients with chronic periodontitis. In this study we performed a modern approach - Complete physical mapping of the IL6 gene - to identify the polymorphisms associated with chronic periodontitis in a southern Brazilian population sample. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One-hundred and nine individuals of both genders (mean age: 41.5 ± 8.5 years) were divided into a study group (56 participants with periodontitis) and a control group (53 individuals without periodontitis). After collection and purification of DNA, nine tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; rs1524107, rs2069835, rs2069837, rs2069838, rs2069840, rs2069842, rs2069843, rs2069845 and rs2069849) covering the entire gene were selected according to the information available on the International HapMap Project website and evaluated using real-time PCR. RESULTS: Differences in the distribution of the following parameters were statistically significant between study and control groups: number of teeth (p = 0.030); probing depth (p < 0.001); clinical attachment level (p < 0.001); gingival index (p < 0.001); plaque index (p = 0.003); calculus index (p < 0.001); and dental mobility (p < 0.001). It was found that marker rs2069837 (located in intron 2 of IL6) under G dominant was associated with protection against chronic periodontitis in a Brazilian population in the presence of clinical variables, such as visible plaque, dentist visit frequency and dental floss use, and was suggested for the first time as a marker of susceptibility to chronic periodontitis. CONCLUSION: Complete physical mapping of IL6 (using tag SNPs) was carried out for the first time, unveiling allele G of polymorphism rs2069837 (located in the second intron of IL6) as a suggestive marker of protection against chronic periodontitis in a Brazilian population.

BACKGROUND: Tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) is an anticoagulant with antimetastatic properties. The homozygous CC polymorphism of TFPI (-33T â†’ C) is associated with higher TFPI levels and lower venous thromboembolism risk. This study was the first to evaluate the impact of this polymorphism on disease-free survival (DFS) in cancer patients after curative resection. METHODS: A prospectively maintained tumor bank with clinical data was used to identify patients who underwent curative surgery for colorectal cancer between 1994 and 2006. Germline DNA was extracted from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded normal colonic mucosa. Single nucleotide polymorphisms for TFPI (-33T â†’ C), factor V Leiden (G1691A), and prothrombin (G20210A) were determined by polymerase chain reaction. Survival analysis was described using the Kaplan-Meier method. Multivariable regression analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazard model. RESULTS: Of the 127 patients identified, the CC genotype was found in 11 %. Venous thromboembolism incidence was 18 % in the TT/TC (wild type/heterozygous) genotypes and 7 % in the CC genotype (p = 0.46). The CC genotype was associated with superior DFS (hazard ratio 0.34, 95 % confidence interval 0.14-0.84; p = 0.02) with 5-year DFS of 63 vs. 24 % for CC vs. TT/TC, respectively. In multivariate analysis, CC polymorphism (hazard ratio 0.28, p = 0.008) was independently associated with improved DFS. The prevalence of factor V Leiden (0.8 %) and prothrombin (1.6 %) polymorphisms was too low to detect interaction with TFPI polymorphism or DFS. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that the inherited anticoagulant homozygous -33T â†’ C TFPI polymorphism may protect against colon cancer recurrence and suggests a mediating role for the coagulation system in cancer outcomes.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Use of cisplatin can induce type I hypersensitivity reactions that may also be linked to the quality of the drug utilized. We observed cases of hypersensitivity that appeared to be associated with the brand of cisplatin used. The aim of this study was to compare two different brands of cisplatin in relation to type I hypersensitivity reactions. METHODS: Brand A was used in a tertiary care teaching hospital until 2012, and use of brand B started from January 2013, when the first hypersensitivity cases were observed. Patients were categorized based on symptom. Cisplatin of both brands was analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-(+)-MS) and characterized according to US Pharmacopeia. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: There were no cases of hypersensitivity associated with the use of cisplatin brand A, whereas four of 127 outpatients that used cisplatin brand B were affected. The two brands were in accordance with the US Pharmacopeia parameters, and there was no significant difference in the total platinum levels between the two brands when analysed by HPLC. However, high-resolution ESI-(+)-MS analyses show that brand B contains approximately 2.7 times more hydrolysed cisplatin than brand A. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: The increase in the hydrolysed form of cisplatin found in brand B may be the cause of the hypersensitivity reaction observed in a subset of patients. We present the first study of the quality of drugs by high-resolution ESI-(+)-MS. Drug regulatory agencies and manufacturers should consider including measurement of hydrolysed cisplatin as a quality criterion for cisplatin formulations.

This work evaluated the chemical composition and mycotoxin incidence in corn silage from 5 Brazilian dairy-producing regions: Castro, in central-eastern Paraná State (n=32); Toledo, in southwestern Paraná (n=20); southeastern Goiás (n=14); southern Minas Gerais (n=23); and western Santa Catarina (n=20). On each dairy farm, an infrared thermography camera was used to identify 3 sampling sites that exhibited the highest temperature, a moderate temperature, and the lowest temperature on the silo face, and 1 sample was collected from each site. The chemical composition and concentrations of mycotoxins were evaluated, including the levels of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2; zearalenone; ochratoxin A; deoxynivalenol; and fumonisins B1 and B2. The corn silage showed a highly variable chemical composition, containing, on average, 7.1±1.1%, 52.5±5.4%, and 65.2±3.6% crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and total digestible nutrients, respectively. Mycotoxins were found in more than 91% of the samples, with zearalenone being the most prevalent (72.8%). All samples from the Castro region contained zearalenone at a high average concentration (334±374µg/kg), even in well-preserved silage. The incidence of aflatoxin B1 was low (0.92%). Silage temperature and the presence of mycotoxins were not correlated; similarly, differences were not observed in the concentration or incidence of mycotoxins across silage locations with different temperatures. Infrared thermography is an accurate tool for identifying heat sites, but temperature cannot be used to predict the chemical composition or the incidence of mycotoxins that have been analyzed, within the silage. The pre-harvest phase of the ensiling process is most likely the main source of mycotoxins in silage.

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of 3 overtraining (OT) protocols on the glial activation and apoptosis in the spinal cords of mice. Rodents were divided into control (C; sedentary mice), overtrained by downhill running (OTR/down), overtrained by uphill running (OTR/up) and overtrained by running without inclination (OTR). The incremental load test, ambulation test, exhaustive test and functional behavioural assessment were used as performance evaluation parameters. 36 h after the exhaustive test, the dorsal and ventral parts of the lumbar spinal cord (L4-L6) were dissected for subsequent protein analysis by immunoblotting. The OT protocols led to similar responses of some performance parameters. The ventral glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) protein levels were diminished in the OTR/up and OTR compared to CT and OTR/down groups. The ventral ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1 (Iba-1), and the dorsal GFAP and Iba-1 protein levels were increased in the OTR/down compared to the other groups. The ratio between the cleaved capase-3/caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-9/caspase-9 measured in the spinal cord were not sensitive to the OT protocols. In summary, the OTR/down activated the glial cells in the motor (i. e. Iba-1) and sensory (i. e. GFAP and Iba-1) neurons without leading to apoptosis.

Endophytic bacteria have been found to colonize internal tissues in many different plants, where they can have several beneficial effects, including defense against pathogens. In this study, we aimed to identify endophytic bacteria associated with roots of the tropical piperaceae Piper tuberculatum, which is known for its resistance to infection by Fusarium solani f. sp piperis, the causal agent of black pepper (Piper nigrum) root rot disease in the Amazon region. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, we isolated endophytes belonging to 13 genera: Bacillus, Paenibacillus, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Rhizobium, Sinorhizobium, Agrobacterium, Ralstonia, Serratia, Cupriavidus, Mitsuaria, Pantoea, and Staphylococcus. The results showed that 56.52% of isolates were associated with the phylum Proteobacteria, which comprised α, ß, and γ classes. Other bacteria were related to the phylum Firmicutes, including Bacillus, which was the most abundant genus among all isolates. Antagonistic assays revealed that Pt12 and Pt13 isolates, identified as Pseudomonas putida and Pseudomonas sp, respectively, were able to inhibit F. solani f. sp piperis growth in vitro. We describe, for the first time, the molecular identification of 23 endophytic bacteria from P. tuberculatum, among which two Pseudomonas species have the potential to control the pathogen responsible for root rot disease in black pepper in the Amazon region.

We have previously shown that the prophylactic treatment with cannabidiol (CBD) reduces inflammation in a model of acute lung injury (ALI). In this work we analyzed the effects of the therapeutic treatment with CBD in mice subjected to the model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI on pulmonary mechanics and inflammation. CBD (20 and 80 mg/kg) was administered (i.p.) to mice 6 h after LPS-induced lung inflammation. One day (24 h) after the induction of inflammation the assessment of pulmonary mechanics and inflammation were analyzed. The results show that CBD decreased total lung resistance and elastance, leukocyte migration into the lungs, myeloperoxidase activity in the lung tissue, protein concentration and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF and IL-6) and chemokines (MCP-1 and MIP-2) in the bronchoalveolar lavage supernatant. Thus, we conclude that CBD administered therapeutically, i.e. during an ongoing inflammatory process, has a potent anti-inflammatory effect and also improves the lung function in mice submitted to LPS-induced ALI. Therefore the present and previous data suggest that in the future cannabidiol might become a useful therapeutic tool for the attenuation and treatment of inflammatory lung diseases.

Obesity is associated with myocardial insulin resistance and impairment of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway. The activation of the mTOR cascade by exercise has been largely shown in skeletal muscle, but insufficiently analyzed in myocardial tissue. In addition, little is known regarding the mTOR upstream molecules in the hearts of obese animals and even less about the role of exercise in this process. Thus, the present study was aimed to evaluate the effects of physical exercise on P38 Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (P38MAPK) phosphorylation and the REDD1 (regulated in development and DNA damage responses 1) and 14-3-3 protein levels in the myocardium of diet-induced obesity (DIO) rats. After achievement of DIO and insulin resistance, Wistar rats were divided in 2 groups: sedentary obese rats and obese rats performed treadmill running (50-min/day, 5 days per week velocity of 1.0 km/h for 2 months). Forty-eight hours after the final physical exercise, the rats were killed, and the myocardial tissue was removed for Western blot analysis. DIO increased the REDD1 protein levels and reduced the 14-3-3 protein levels and P38MAPK, mTOR, P70S6k (p70 ribosomal S6 protein kinase), and 4EBP1 (4E-binding protein-1) phosphorylation. Interestingly, physical exercise reduced the REDD1 protein levels and increased the 14-3-3 protein levels and P38MAPK, mTOR, P70S6k, and 4EBP1 phosphorylation. Moreover, exercise increased the REDD1/14-3-3 association in the heart. Our results indicate that the phospho-P38MAPK, REDD1, and 14-3-3 protein levels were reduced in the myocardium of obese rats and that physical exercise increased the protein levels of these molecules.

The aims of the this study were a) to verify whether the performance decrease induced by nonfunctional overreaching (NFOR) is linked to high concentrations of cytokines in serum, skeletal muscles and liver; b) to verify muscle myostatin adaptation to NFOR; c) to verify the effects of chronic glucose supplementation on the parameters mentioned above. Mice were divided into control (C), trained (TR), overtrained (OTR) and supplemented overtrained (OTR + S). The incremental load test (ILT) and exhaustive test (ET) were used to measure performances before and after exercise protocols. 24 h after ET, muscles and liver were removed and stored at -80°C for subsequent measurements. Total blood was collected from decapitation for subsequent determination of cytokine concentrations. Generally, OTR and OTR + S presented higher contents of IL-6, TNF-alpha, GLUT-4 and myostatin in muscle samples compared to C and TR. Glucose supplementation attenuated the high contents of IL-6, TNF-alpha and IL-15 in liver, and of IL-6 in serum. In summary, NFOR led to low-grade chronic inflammation and myostatin upregulation.

The objective of this study was to evaluate combined effects of corn particle size and feed form on performance, carcass characteristics, nutrient digestibility, and gastrointestinal tract development of broilers from 1 to 39 d of age. A total of 1,800 days old, male Cobb 500 broilers were randomly assigned to 9 dietary treatments with 8 replicate pens (25 birds/pen). The experiment consisted of a factorial arrangement of 3 corn particle sizes (750, 1,150, and 1,550 µm) and 3 feed forms (mash, 3- and 4-mm pellets) provided from 1 to 39 d. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) was added as an indigestible marker (0.5%) during the finisher phase (27-39 d) to determine nutrient digestibility. Feed intake (FI), body weight (BW), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were determined at 17, 27, and 39 d of age, with FCR adjusted for mortality. On d 40, 10 birds/pen were randomly selected and processed for meat yield determination. Data were analyzed as a 3×3 factorial (particle size x feed form) arrangement of treatments. Broilers fed 3- and 4-mm pellets had increased (P < 0.05) BW, FI, and lower FCR than broilers fed mash diets at 39 d of age. At 39 d of age, broilers fed diets with 750 µm corn particle size had heavier (P < 0.05) BW and increased FI than broilers fed diets with corn particle sizes of 1,150 and 1,550 µm. At 39 d of age FCR was unaffected by corn particle size. Heavier (P < 0.05) carcass and breast weights were observed for broilers fed 3-mm pellets. Broilers fed diets with corn particle size of 750 µm had heavier (P < 0.05) carcass and breast weight than broilers fed diets with 1,550 µm. Digestibility of nutrients was higher (P < 0.05) in pelleted diets, particularly when corn particle size was increased from 750 to 1,550 µm. Breast myopathies such as wooden breast (WB) and spaghetti meat (SM), were greater (P < 0.05) in broilers fed 3-mm pellets compared to mash diets. In conclusion, broilers fed 3- and 4-mm pelleted diets had greater nutrient digestibility and improved broiler performance compared to broilers fed mash diets.

BACKGROUND: High-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is the standard of care for patients with relapsed Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL). However, there is currently little information on the predictors of outcome for patients whose disease recurs after ASCT. METHODS: Five hundred and eleven adult patients with relapsed HL after ASCT from EBMT-GITMO databases were reviewed. RESULTS: Treatments administered following ASCT failure included conventional chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy in 294 (64%) patients, second ASCT in 35 (8%), and alloSCT in 133 (29%). After a median follow-up of 49 months, overall survival (OS) was 32% at 5 years. Independent risk factors for OS were early relapse (<6 months) after ASCT, stage IV, bulky disease, poor performance status (PS), and age ≥50 years at relapse. For patients with no risk factors OS at 5 years was 62% compared with 37% and 12% for those having 1 and ≥2 factors, respectively. This score was also predictive for outcome in each group of rescue treatment after ASCT failure. CONCLUSION(S): Early relapse, stage IV, bulky disease, poor PS, and age ≥50 years at ASCT failure are relevant factors for outcome that may help to understand the results of different therapeutic approaches.

It is well known that high-fat diets (HFDs) induce obesity and result in an increase in oxidative stress in adipose tissue, which leads to an impairment of fat mobilization by a downregulation of the lipases, such as hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) and adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL). On the other hand, exercise training leads to a reduction in adipose tissue and an improvement of antioxidant status and the lipolytic pathway. Our aim was to examine the influence of exercise and moderate intensity training on oxidative stress parameters and the relationship between the proteins involved in the lipolysis of animals subjected to a high-fat fed diet. Twenty-four mice were used and divided into 4 groups (n=6): standard diet (SD); standard diet plus exercise (SD+Ex); high-fat diet (HFD); and high-fat diet plus exercise (HFD+Ex). The animals received HFD for 90 days and submitted to a daily training protocol in swinging. The animals were euthanized 48 h after the last session of exercise. White adipose tissue epididymal fat was excised for the measurement of oxidative stress parameters and protein levels of lipolytic enzymes by Western blotting. The results show an increase in body weight after 90 days of HFD, and exercise training prevented great gain. In adipose tissue, lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation increased after HFD and decreased significantly after exercise training. The protein level of CGI-58 was reduced, and FAS was increased in the HFD than in SD, whereas ATGL exhibited an increase (p<0.05) in HFD than in SD. The exercise plays a significant role in reducing oxidative damage, along with the regulation of proteins that are involved in the lipolysis of animals exposed to HFD.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of nonadherence to dialysis (NAD) presents a wide variation, depending on the parameters used and demographic regions studied. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and predictors of NAD of patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis (HD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study with 255 adult patients receiving HD for >3 months. Skipping a session per month, shortening a session for at least 10 min, phosphorus >7.5 mg/dl, potassium >6.0 mmol/l and interdialytic weight gain (IDWG) >5.7% of body weight were indicative of NAD. The association of sociodemographic and clinical variables with NAD was assessed using logistic regression. RESULTS: Mean age was 50 ± 13.1 years, 62.7% were male, 85.5% were of African descent and 62% were married. The prevalence rates of NAD were: 49% of shortening sessions, 18% of hyperkalemia, 12% of hyperphosphatemia, 9% of IDWG >5.7% of dry weight and 8% of skipping HD. Independent predictors of NAD were: age ≤50 years, not being married, living alone, living in Salvador, attending dialysis without a companion, ethnic African descent, Kt/V <1.3 and residual diuresis <100 ml/day. CONCLUSION: NAD is frequent and distinct sociodemographic and clinical variables predict different parameters.

BACKGROUND: TB is an infectious disease with a worldwide impact. TB is closely associated with social and housing conditions, exerting a significant impact on the prison population, which is particularly susceptible to the disease. Evidence suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated social vulnerability. This study therefore aimed to analyse the impact of the pandemic on the diagnosis of new cases of TB in the Brazilian prison population in the years 2020 and 2021.METHODS: This is an ecological study involving cases of TB recorded in the prison population of Brazil from 2015 to 2021. Data were collected from the Brazil's Information System for Notifiable Diseases.RESULTS: The incidence of TB in the prison population in Brazil fell from 1,005.9/100,000 population between 2015 and 2019 to 852.3/100,000 population between 2020 and 2021. In 2021, there was a deficit of 539 cases (-7.6%) compared to what was expected for the year. In 2020, there was a 10% reduction in TB diagnoses in January and February, reaching 3.8% in March. A negative percentage was observed in most of the subsequent months. In 2021, the year began with a 21.6% decline in January, returning to positive values only in August and September.CONCLUSION: The first years of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in underdiagnosis of TB in the Brazilian prison population.

BACKGROUND: The application of automated analyses in neuroscience has become a practical approach. With automation, the algorithms and tools employed perform fast and accurate data analysis. It minimizes the inherent errors of manual analysis performed by a human experimenter. It also reduces the time required to analyze a large amount of data and the need for human and financial resources. METHODS: In this work, we describe a protocol for the automated analysis of the Morris Water Maze (MWM) and the Open Field (OF) test using the OpenCV library in Python. This simple protocol tracks mice navigation with high accuracy. RESULTS: In the MWM, both automated and manual analysis revealed similar results regarding the time the mice stayed in the target quadrant (p = 0.109). In the OF test, both automated and manual analysis revealed similar results regarding the time the mice stayed in the center (p = 0.520) and in the border (p = 0.503) of the field. CONCLUSIONS: The automated analysis protocol has several advantages over manual analysis. It saves time, reduces human errors, can be customized, and provides more consistent information about animal behavior during tests. We conclude that the automated protocol described here is reliable and provides consistent behavioral analysis in mice. This automated protocol could lead to deeper insight into behavioral neuroscience.
