OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effect of bromelain and propolis extract on the bond strength (BS) of a universal adhesive system to eroded dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty human molars with exposed dentin were halved, with one half protected by composite resin and the other subjected to erosive treatment followed by remineralization. After the erosive treatment, the composite resin was removed, and the teeth were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 20): Adhesive-Control System; Br-10%; Pr-16%. Following the treatments, composite resin blocks were built on the dentin surfaces and sticks of 0.9 mm2 were obtained and stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h and 6 months. After these periods, the sticks underwent bond strength testing and the data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVA, Bonferroni test, p < 0.05. Fracture patterns were observed using light microscope and scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: Irrespective of the substrate and aging duration, propolis demonstrated higher BS (p < 0.05) compared to the other treatments. Eroded dentin exhibited greater removal of the smear layer and dentinal tubules with a larger diameter than sound dentin, especially when treated with bromelain, resulting in the formation of resin tags. CONCLUSIONS: Propolis consistently promoted the highest bond strength, irrespective of aging or substrate. Eroded dentin treated with propolis, or bromelain exhibited a higher prevalence of non-adhesive fractures and resin tag formation. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Propolis shows promise for enhancing the longevity of adhesive restorations in eroded dentin due to its ability to promote high bond strength.

BACKGROUND: Restorative materials are in prolonged contact with living tissues such as oral mucosa, dentin, pulp, periodontal, and periapical tissues. Therefore, the potentially harmful effects of these materials and their components on oral tissues should be evaluated before clinical use. This study aimed to compare the cell viability of different adhesive systems (ASs) on human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). METHODS: Three ASs that combining methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) monomer with new hydrophilic amide monomers [Clearfil Universal Bond Quick(CUBQ), Kuraray Noritake], self-reinforcing 3D monomer [Bond Force II(BFII), Tokuyama)], and dual-cure property [Futurabond DC(FBDC), VOCO] were used. Three (n = 3) samples were prepared for each group. Dental pulp stem cells were isolated from ten patients' extracted third molar teeth. Samples were incubated in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) for 24 h (h), 72 h, and 7 days (d) to obtain extracts. For the control group, cells were cultured without DBA samples. Cell viability of ASs extracts was measured using a cell proliferation detection kit (WST-1, Roche). Statistical analysis was performed using two-way ANOVA and post-hoc (Duncan) tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS: At 24 and 72 h statistically significant differences were determined between control and BFII, control and FBDC groups (p < 0.05), while no differences between control and CUBQ groups (p > 0.05). On the 7th d, statistically significant differences were found between the control and experimental groups (p < 0.05), while no differences between experimental groups (p > 0.05). A statistically significant difference was detected for the BFII group over the three-time interval (p < 0.05). The lowest cell viability was observed for the FBDC group at 24 h, and the difference was statistically significant when compared with 72 h and 7th d (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: All ASs showed different cell viability values at various exposure times. It should be taken into consideration that pH values, as well as the contents of ASs, have a significant effect on the cell viability.

This study evaluated the effect of pretreatment with limonene and/or biosilicate on the bond strength of a universal adhesive system in self-etch mode to dentin. Occlusal cavities were prepared in 80 human molars and the teeth were randomly allocated to one of four groups (n = 20), according to the pretreatment regimens applied before the adhesive. The pretreatments were (i) Control, no pretreatment, (ii) LIM, 0.5% limonene; (iii) Bio, 10% biosilicate; and (iv) LIMBio, LIM + Bio. After adhesive application and restoration, the specimens were sectioned into sticks, separated, and stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h or 6 months. Microtensile bond strength test was carried out and measurements were compared across pretreatment groups and storage times. Fracture patterns and adhesive interfaces were observed. Loss of dry mass was calculated (n = 10). There was no statistically significant difference in the bond strength between the groups and the most prevalent fracture pattern was the non-adhesive. LIM and LIMBio resulted in more open dentinal tubules. LIM and Bio, whether separate or combined, showed particles of those substances, which decreased in size and number after 6 months. All groups lost mass weight after treatment, with no statistically significant differences between them. Limonene and biosilicate pretreatment did not affect the bond strength to dentin of the universal adhesive system, but resulted in more non-adhesive fractures, even after 6 months.

OBJECTIVES: This meta-analysis aimed to elucidate the effects of various acid etching patterns on the sensitivity of teeth and their clinical effectiveness following composite resin repair. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase databases were searched for relevant studies on the postoperative sensitivity (POS) of composite resin restorations after using different bonding systems. The retrieval was from the inception of the databases to August 13, 2022, with no filter of written language. Literature screening was conducted by two independent researchers. The Cochrane risk-of-bias assessment tool was adopted for quality evaluation, and Stata 15.0 for analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-five randomized controlled trials were included in the present study. Following resin composite restoration, 1309 restorations were bonded by self-etching (SE) adhesives, whereas 1271 restorations were bonded by total-etching (TE) adhesives. The meta-analyses showed that there is no evidence to prove the SE and TE will affect POS at present when measured using the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria [RR = 1.00 (95% CI: 0.96, 1.04)], the World Dental Federation (FDI) [RR = 1.06 (95% CI: 0.98, 1.15)], or the visual analog scale (VAS) [SMD = 0.02 (95% CI: -0.15, 0.20)] scales. At a certain follow-up time, TE adhesives provide better outcomes in terms of color match, marginal staining, and marginal adaptation. In other words, TE adhesives have better esthetic results. CONCLUSIONS: The type of bonding technique (ER and SE) does not affect the risk and degree of POS in class I/II and class V restorations. Further research is required to verify whether these findings apply to different forms of composite resin restorations. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Besides the fact that TE barely increase postoperative sensitivity, it also yields superior cosmetic results.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to introduce the concept of "Selective adhesive luting-SAL" which is explained through clinical steps and supported by preliminary laboratory evidence. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Cementation with rubber dam is difficult to perform in case of short abutment teeth and/or subgingival crown margins. By means of universal resin cements/universal adhesive systems, which can be employed in self-adhesive as well as adhesive luting procedures, this paper presents a novel technique allowing clinicians to perform reliable cementation where rubber dam isolation is difficult. The SAL technique entails the application of a universal adhesive system only on easily accessible abutment surfaces, enabling simultaneous adhesive and self-adhesive luting in different portions of the abutment. The SAL clinical workflow is explained through prosthodontic rehabilitation of maxillary right central incisor affected by microdontia and restored with a lithium-disilicate crown. Furthermore, our laboratory microshear bond strength study supports the rationale behind SAL application demonstrating higher bond strength even when the adhesive resin is placed only on one portion of the cementation substrate. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This article advocates the application of SAL technique in clinical situations where effective adhesive luting is uncertain, since it can improve the adhesion between the tooth and universal resin cements.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of rubber dam isolation on shear bond strength of two different adhesive systems to enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mesial, distal, lingual, and vestibular enamel surfaces of thirty human third molars were prepared (total n = 120). A custom splint was made to fit a volunteer's maxilla, holding the specimens in place in the oral cavity. Four composite resin cylinders were bonded to each tooth with one of two bonding agents (OptiBond FL and Prime&Bond active) with or without rubber dam isolation. Shear bond strength was tested in a universal testing machine and failure modes were assessed. Significance level for statistical analyses was set at 5%. RESULTS: All pairwise comparisons revealed statistical differences (p < 0.05). The highest mean shear bond strength values were obtained in rubber dam experimental groups, regardless of the adhesive system. Group OptiBond FL with rubber dam presented the highest mean bond strength values. Fracture modes for specimens bonded without rubber dam isolation were adhesive and cohesive within enamel, while rubber dam experimental groups revealed only cohesive fractures. CONCLUSIONS: Absolute isolation with rubber dam increases bond strength to enamel, independent of the adhesive system. The three-step total-etch system OptiBond FL provided significantly higher bond strength values than Prime&Bond active under both experimental conditions. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Rubber dam isolation has a significant effect on bond strengths to enamel, independent of the adhesive system. Its application is, therefore, advised whenever adhesive procedures are performed. A filled three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive performed superiorly, with or without rubber dam isolation, when bonding to enamel compared to an isopropanol-based universal adhesive.

This study investigated the effect of the bonding agent application method on the dentin bond durability of a two-step adhesive utilizing a universal-adhesive-derived primer. The bonding durability of a universal adhesive was compared with those of two conventional two-step adhesives by shear bond strength testing after thermal cycling. The primer was applied (with or without phosphoric acid pre-etching), and the specimens were divided into three groups based on the bonding agent application method used as follows: (i) strong air-flow application, (ii) gentle air-flow application, and (iii) gentle air-flow + second bonding application. The shear bond strength was determined after thermal cycling. All the factors (bonding agent application method, adhesive system, and storage condition) significantly influenced the dentin shear bond strength both with and without phosphoric acid pre-etching. The specimens exposed to gentle air-flow showed a higher shear bond strength than did those exposed to strong air-flow and gentle air-flow + second bonding. The bond durability of the tested adhesive systems was influenced by the bonding agent application method, and this trend was material dependent. The G2-Bond Universal exhibited the same or greater dentin bond durability to the other two-step adhesive systems.

Non-parasitic flatworms are known to temporarily attach to the substrate by secreting a multicomponent bioadhesive to counteract water movements. However, to date, only species of two higher-level flatworm taxa (Macrostomorpha and Proseriata) have been investigated for their adhesive proteins. Remarkably, the surface-binding protein is not conserved between flatworm taxa. In this study, we sequenced and assembled a draft genome, as well as a transcriptome, and generated a tail-specific positional RNA sequencing dataset of the polyclad Theama mediterranea. This led to the identification of 15 candidate genes potentially involved in temporary adhesion. Using in situ hybridisation and RNA interference, we determined their expression and function. Of these 15 genes, 4 are homologues of adhesion-related genes found in other flatworms. With this work, we provide two novel key components on the flatworm temporary adhesion system. First, we identified a Kringle-domain-containing protein (Tmed-krg1), which was expressed exclusively in the anchor cell. This in silico predicted membrane-bound Tmed-krg1 could potentially bind to the cohesive protein, and a knockdown led to a non-adhesive phenotype. Secondly, a secreted tyrosinase (Tmed-tyr1) was identified, which might crosslink the adhesive proteins. Overall, our findings will contribute to the future development of reversible synthetic glues with desirable properties for medical and industrial applications.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effect of amalgam contamination, different surface treatments, and adhesive protocols on dentin microleakage to bulk-fill composite resin material. METHODS: Forty teeth were fixed in (polyvinyl siloxane) PVS molds, and the Class II cavities were placed on mesial and distal aspects. Thirty teeth were restored by amalgam and thermocycled to 10,000 cycles (5 and 55 °C, 30-s dwell time). The rest were restored with Filtek one Bulk Fill composite without amalgam predecessor. Samples were divided into: G1 (dentin pretreated with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate), G2 (0.5 mm of dentin was removed), G3 (no surface modification), and G4 (control, where composite was bonded to sound dentin without amalgam predecessor.). Single Bond Universal Adhesive system was used to bond the composite material, by using the etch-and-rinse protocol in the mesial cavity preparation and self-etch protocol in the distal. Specimens underwent thermocycling for 5000 cycles, then embedded in silver nitrate and sectioned for stereomicroscope examination. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U test, and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to analyze the results at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The highest microleakage score values (4.00) were found in the G2, and G4 in etch-and-rinse protocol. While the lowest scores were found in G2 when using self-etching protocol (1.5). Lower microleakage values were associated with the chlorhexidine treatment group for both adhesive protocols. No significant differences were found between amalgam contaminated and non-contaminated groups. CONCLUSIONS: Amalgam contamination did not affect microleakage. Self-etching adhesive protocol significantly reduced microleakage for all groups irrespective of the surface treatment. Chlorhexidine pretreatment improved microleakage for both adhesive protocols but had no significant effect.

OBJECTIVE: To determine a comparative evaluation between the shear bond strength (SBS) of total etch adhesive system and the SBS of universal adhesive system in various etching techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS: There were made 60 sections of teeth for the laboratory research. The studied samples had been divided into 4 groups (15 samples in each group). The control group of the study was the Adper SingleBond 2 total etch adhesive system. The SingleBondUniversal adhesive system had been used in three comparison groups: the first group was the total etch technique; the second group was selective etch technique; the third group was self-etching techinque. The Zwick Roell Z010 testing machine had been used for the study. The received results were fixed. The statistical data were processed. Comparison of researched groups were performed in pairs using the nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: In the control group the average value of the shear bond strength (SBS) was 15.01±5.2 MPa, in the first comparison group - 15.6±4.8 MPa, in the second comparison group - 19.7±6.04 MPa, in the third comparison group - 17.9±5.85 MPa. The groups with SingleBondUniversal adhesive system in selective etch technique (19.74 MPa) and self-etching (17.9 MPa) technique had the highest average values of the shear bond strength. The universal adhesive system with total etch technique and the total etch adhesive system had statistically similar data (p≥0.05). The control group with Adper SingleBond 2 total etch adhesive system had the lowest shear bond strength (15.01 MPa). CONCLUSIONS: The universal adhesive system had high average values of SBS in all etching techniques. During the comparative evaluation there were established correspondence between average values of SBS of universal adhesive system and SBS of total etch adhesive system. The universal adhesive system in selective etch technique had the highest shear bond strength (SBS) with enamel and dentin.

Many free-living flatworms have evolved a temporary adhesion system, which allows them to quickly attach to and release from diverse substrates. In the marine Macrostomum lignano, the morphology of the adhesive system and the adhesion-related proteins have been characterised. However, little is known about how temporary adhesion is performed in other aquatic environments. Here, we performed a 3D reconstruction of the M. lignano adhesive organ and compared it to the morphology of five selected Macrostomum, representing two marine, one brackish, and two freshwater species. We compared the protein domains of the two adhesive proteins, as well as an anchor cell-specific intermediate filament. We analysed the gene expression of these proteins by in situ hybridisation and performed functional knockdowns with RNA interference. Remarkably, there are almost no differences in terms of morphology, protein regions, and gene expression based on marine, brackish, and freshwater habitats. This implies that glue components produced by macrostomids are conserved among species, and this set of two-component glue functions from low to high salinity. These findings could contribute to the development of novel reversible biomimetic glues that work in all wet environments and could have applications in drug delivery systems, tissue adhesives, or wound dressings.

BACKGROUND: Due to the chemical and morphological differences between primary vs. permanent teeth, the time reduction of the acid etching or acidic primer can result in higher values of bond strength. AIM: To assess through a systematic review and meta-analysis the influence of the reducing etching (acid etching or acidic primer) time on the bond strength of adhesive systems to primary dentin. DESIGN: A systematic search was carried out in 3 databases: PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus. Studies that evaluated the effect of reducing the etching time on the bond strength of adhesive systems to primary dentin were included. Meta-analyses were performed using a random-effects model, with subgroups for etch-and-rinse and self-etching adhesives, with a significance level of P < .05. The risk of bias and heterogeneity between studies (Cochrane and I2 tests) were assessed. RESULTS: Eight studies were included in the systematic review and seven in the meta-analyses. The shortening etching time did not influence the immediate dentin bond strength for etch-and-rinse (Z = 0.07, P = .95) and self-etching adhesives (Z = 0.41, P = .69). After ageing, however, the shorting etching time improved the bond strength for etch-and-rinse adhesives (Z = 2.01, P = .04). All studies presented high bias risk. CONCLUSIONS: Reducing the acid-etching time to primary dentin improves the long-term bond strength to this substrate.

Suspension-based matrix transdermal delivery systems (TDSs) are specialized systems that maintain a continuous driving force for drug delivery over prolonged wear. The pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) is the most critical constituent of such systems. Our study aimed to determine the effect of different mixing methods on the performance of silicone PSA-based suspension TDSs. Lidocaine suspension TDSs were prepared using conventional slow rotary mixing, high-speed homogenization, bead-mill homogenization, vortex shaking, and by an unguator. Resultant TDSs were tested for tack, shear, and peel properties and correlated to coat weight, content uniformity, microstructure, and in vitro permeation across dermatomed human skin. Every mixing method tested caused a significant reduction in peel. However, bead-mill homogenization resulted in significant loss of all adhesive properties tested, while unguator-mixed TDSs retained most properties. Good linear correlation (R2 = 1.000) between the shear properties of the TDSs with the average cumulative amount of lidocaine permeated after 24 h was observed, with no significant difference between percutaneous delivery from slow rotary-mixed systems (1334 ± 59.21 µg/cm2) and unguator-mixed systems (1147 ± 108.3 µg/cm2). However, significantly lower delivery from bead-mill homogenized systems (821.1 ± 28.00 µg/cm2) was noted. While many factors affect TDS performance, careful consideration must also be given to the processing parameters during development as they have been shown to affect the resultant system's therapeutic efficacy. Extensive mixing with bead-mill homogenization demonstrated crystallization of drug, loss in adhesive properties, coat weight, and film thickness, with reduced transdermal delivery of lidocaine from the prepared system.

BACKGROUND: Silver diammine fluoride (SDF) applied before a restoration may prevent recurrent caries; therefore, its effect on the bonding of restorative materials is contradictory. AIM: To assess through a systematic review and meta-analysis the influence of SDF on the bonding performance of adhesive materials to dentine. DESIGN: A systematic search was carried out in PubMed, Web of Science, LILACS, and Scopus. Studies comparing bond strength of adhesive systems or glass ionomer cement to SDF-treated and -untreated (control) dentine were included. Global analysis comparing the bond strength data was performed, separately for adhesive systems and glass ionomer cement, using RevMan5.1, with a random-effect model, at a 5% significance level. RESULTS: Eleven studies were included in the review and ten in the meta-analyses. Overall pooled effect for glass ionomer cement has shown no significant difference between the groups (Z = 0.47; P = .64). SDF treatment significantly impairs the bonding of adhesive systems to dentine (Z = 2.11; P = .03); this effect can be eliminated by the rinsing step (Z = 0.85; P = .40). CONCLUSIONS: The previous application of SDF does not influence the dentine bond strength of glass ionomer cement, but compromises the bonding of adhesive systems.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the antidemineralization effect of composites containing silver and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles used for bonding brackets to tooth specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 75 freshly extracted teeth were etched and primed and then randomly assigned to three adhesive groups: (1) conventional orthodontic adhesive, (2) conventional adhesive mixed with TiO2 nanoparticles, and (3) conventional adhesive mixed with silver nanoparticles. In each group, brackets were bonded with the pertinent adhesive. Teeth were painted with varnish on all surfaces except a 2-mm rim around brackets. Specimens were subjected to a cariogenic process in a circulating microbial model inoculated with Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei for 12 days and subsequently sectioned for cross-sectional microhardness testing. In each specimen, enamel microhardness was determined in three locations: 25-30 µm and 1.5 mm away from the bracket and under the varnish-protected enamel. Hardness of enamel in the first two locations was reported as a percentage of the protected enamel hardness. RESULTS: Enamel hardness was higher at 25-30 µm away from brackets in both the experimental groups (p value < 0.05), and the nanoparticles acted similarly in this location (p value = 0.992). At 1.5 mm away from the brackets, there was no difference between experimental and control groups (p value > 0.05); the effect of TiO2 attenuated in this location while silver remained as potent. CONCLUSION: Both nanoparticles resulted in decreased demineralization at 25-30 µm from the bracket but farther away the effect of TiO2 was diminished. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: According to the results of this study, composites containing silver and TiO2 nanoparticles can be suggested as anti-demineralization adhesives in case their biocompatibility is proved.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of out research was to determine the effectiveness of the sealing property of adhesive systems V and VII generations by studying the depth of curing, water absorption and water solubility of their samples. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: The study was performed according to ISO / TS 11405: 2015 at the Central Factory Laboratory of JSC "CTOMA", Kharkiv, Ukraine, Certificate of Attestation No. 100-062 / 2015 dated 03/04/2015. For the study we used specially prepared laboratory samples which were made in the form of plates from adhesive system "DC Adhesive NF" (Dental Central) of V generation "Single bond Universal" (3M ESPE) of VII generation. А monitor and analyze the results obtained used micrometer MK-25, №4694, №03 / 5321 from 08/18/17; caliper SC-1, No. 267447, No. 03/5322 from 08/18/17; scales AP 210, №112144137, №87027 / 9 from 24.11.2017. RESULTS: Results: According to the results of the investigation the following results were obtained: 1) the average curing depth of V and VII generation of adhesive systems was 4.08mm and 3.51mm respectively at the rate of 2mm; 2) average water absorption: 45.97 µg/mm3 and 30.89 µg/mm3 for V and VII generations respectively; 3) the average water solubility was 6.94 µg / mm3 and 4.17 µg / mm3, respectively. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: According to the results of our laboratory studies, it can be concluded that adhesive systems of V and VII generations can be used for restoration of lesions of tooth hard tissued. Along with this, it can be recommended to use V generation adhesives in closed defects where direct polymerization should be performed and oral fluid access is minimal. Adhesive sysyems of VII generation can be recommended in such cases as: opened restorations, pregingival areas of teeth, cases where a permanent contact of restorations with oral fluid be found along with the cases of autonomic application of adhesive system.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the degree of influence of human blood plasma simulating dentinal fluid on the composite resin adhesion to dental hard tissues. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The strength of the adhesive bond between the composite material and dental hard tissues was studied using a shear test machine Zwick Roell Z 010 («Zwick¼, Germany) on extracted human teeth. XP Bond one-component adhesive system and XENOV self-etching adhesive system (DENTSPLY, Germany), high-definition micrometric restoration material Esthet X HD (DENTSPLY, Germany), as well as centrifuged blood plasma were used. RESULTS: Adhesion strength decreased by 26-78% when blood plasma weighing from 0.2 to 2.0 mg mixed up the self-etching system (weight 6.6 mg). A significant decrease in the adhesion force occurred when plasma with a mass of 0.7 mg or more mixed up with the monomer (a decrease in adhesion by 19.1%). A critical decrease in the adhesion force (43% or more) occurred with the mixture of blood plasma weighing 2.0 mg or more.

OBJECTIVE: To study the dynamics of changes in the adhesion between the composite and dentin of the tooth when using different volumes of a single-component adhesive system in case of contamination of it with human blood plasma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To achieve this goal, the following were used: extracted human teeth, XP Bond one-component adhesive systems (DENTSPLY, Germany), Esthet X HD micrometric restoration material (DENTSPLY, Germany), and centrifuged blood plasma. The strength of the adhesive bond between the composite material and the hard tissues of the tooth was studied using a shear test machine Zwick Roell Z 010 («Zwick¼, Germany). RESULTS: The use of a single-component adhesive system in an amount of 17.7 mg (1 drop from a dispenser) for treating open dentin makes it more resistant to contamination compared to using the same adhesive, but in an amount of 6.6 mg (the amount of adhesive that adsorbs a medium-sized dental take). A decrease in the adhesion force between the composite material and tooth hard tissues from 1.5 to 17.7% occurs when a single-component adhesive system weighing 17.7 mg of blood plasma simulating a dentinal fluid weighing from 0.2 to 2.0 mg enters. The ingestion of the same amount of blood plasma in a single-component adhesive system weighing 6.6 mg leads to a decrease in its adhesion from 4.3 to 43%.

PURPOSE: To apply titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) in an aqueous solution or incorporated into the primer of a self-etching adhesive (Clearfil SE Bond) as dentin pre-treatment and evaluate its antimicrobial effect, determine the minimum bactericidal concentraion (MBC) against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei and analyse its potential to inhibit the development of carious lesions at the restoration interface. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For MBC, an aqueous solution or primer with different concentrations (in %) of TiF4 were used (from 0.0 to 4.0). Also, 50 cavities were prepared at the enamel/dentin junction of third molars and received the following dentin pre-treatments (n = 10): Clearfil SE Bond (CL); aqueous solution of 2.5% TiF4 + CL (T2.5%); aqueous solution of 4% TiF4 + CL (T4%); 2.5% TiF4 incorporated into the primer (P2.5%); 4% TiF4 incorporated into the primer (P4%). Cavities were restored and submitted to pH cycling to create artificial caries lesions. Microhardness tests were performed after sectioning the restorations to assess the demineralisation at margins. RESULTS: ANOVA and Tukey's tests showed that TiF4 in aqueous solution presented MBC against S. mutans and L. casei of over 2.0%. TiF4 in the primer of a self-etching adhesive presented MBC of over 1% for L. casei. For enamel, CL showed no significant differences in microhardness between the depths. CONCLUSIONS: The aqueous solution had an antimicrobial effect against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei of over 2.0%. Pretreatment with the aqueous solution or primer did not inhibit demineralisation at enamel or dentin restoration interfaces.

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare different dentin treatments and adhesive systems on shear bond strength (SBS) of composite to superficial dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this in vitro experimental study, 60 extracted human upper premolars were cut 0.5 mm deep under occlusal DEJ and were randomly divided into six groups (n = 10) based on the method of dentin treatment and adhesive system: (A) two steps self-etch adhesive system (Clearfil SE bond) and (B) two steps of total etch bonding system (Adper single bond 2). (C) 10% papain + Clearfil SE bond. (D) 10% papain + Adper single bond 2. (E) 6% bromelain + Clearfil SE bond. (F) 6% bromelain + Adper single bond 2. Then, a plastic mold was placed on dentin and filled with resin composite. Shear bond strength (MPa) was tested by a universal testing machine (Zwick/Roell Z020, Germany), and the data were statistically analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05) and were applied for mean comparison. RESULTS: A significant difference was detected in the SBS evaluation between the applied adhesive systems (p = 0.0007). The SBS was also significantly affected by the interaction of treatment and etching techniques (p = 0.028). The group with 10% papain as a deproteinizing agent before the self-etching adhesive system showed the highest SBS (p = 0.029). There were no significant differences considering the specimens exposed to papain before the total etch adhesive system (p = 0.13), and the specimens were exposed to bromelain enzyme before self-etch and total etch adhesive systems (p = 0.25, p = 0.84, respectively). CONCLUSION: Papain enzyme treatment with the self-etch adhesive system increased the SBS value. Additionally, the application of bromelain enzyme as dentin treatment before two adhesive systems and papain before total etch adhesive system had no effect on the SBS of composite to superficial dentin. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Application of adhesive systems and dentin treatment can influence the bond strength.
