RESUMO

One might think that the representation of the ageing body in film has evolved over the years, reflecting certain cultural and societal changes, as well as advances in the understanding of ageing. However, regardless of gender, older people are more likely than any other group to appear in film as comic antidotes to ageing, cultivating stereotypes of physical, cognitive and even sexual inefficiency.

RESUMO

In Quebec, racialized immigrant seniors (AIRs) are a significant presence in long-term care facilities (CHSLDs) in the Greater Montreal area. To identify interventions that best meet their needs, this study interviewed 12 RIAs, including their families, about their experience in CHSLDs. The results show that RIAs face three challenges: food, clothing and play. Addressing these issues could improve their LTRCC experience.

RESUMO

Sexuality is an integral part of health and accompanies human beings throughout their lives. It contributes to well-being and improves quality of life. The social representations conveyed by Western society modulate sexuality and can play a decisive role in the expression of seniors' sexuality.

RESUMO

Psychotic disorders, such as delusions and hallucinations, cause stress for individuals, their caregivers and healthcare professionals. Attitudes, perceived as behavioral tendencies, in the presence of these symptoms, can either alleviate or exacerbate them. How should we position ourselves in the presence of these disorders? What are the most effective attitudes for calming day-to-day situations?

RESUMO

High-risk drugs, which are potentially a source of serious adverse reactions, are a major concern in healthcare establishments, particularly for geriatric patients, who often have multiple medications and co-morbid conditions. With a view to continuously improving the quality and safety of care, we have embarked on a proactive approach aimed at identifying, securing and improving the management of medicines at risk in geriatric wards.

RESUMO

Refusal of care is a frequent occurrence in geriatric medicine, especially among people with neurocognitive diseases, particularly in the advanced stages. These refusals of care are a daily burden, not only for the patients themselves, but also for their carers and caregivers. Although they can be prevented, the absence of a single, simple strategy for overcoming them is a real challenge for professionals and carers alike. Their management calls for an approach that is essentially non-pharmacological, always interdisciplinary, humanistic and ethically grounded.

RESUMO

The cognitive-behavioral approach is particularly well-suited to older people who are looking for a short-term therapeutic solution to many emotional problems, without necessarily resorting to psychotropic drugs. One of the major advantages of this type of psychological treatment is that it helps seniors develop coping skills that can be beneficial in both the short and long term. However, some adjustments are sometimes necessary to achieve this goal.

RESUMO

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is particularly common in the elderly, including those with cognitive impairments. We need to stress the importance of early detection to better understand the specific signs of this disorder in the elderly. Psychotherapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing are being explored for their effectiveness and adaptability with the elderly. Identifying post-traumatic stress disorder should be a shared responsibility, for the mental health of the elderly.

RESUMO

The use of technical aids has a positive impact on the autonomy and quality of life of elderly or disabled people, and is also beneficial for the caregivers and professionals who support them. Nevertheless, there are still major obstacles to their use, notably a general lack of information on technical aids. This observation led us to produce a set of information tools to help people better understand these aids and how to use them.

RESUMO

Hospitalization is an important stage in the life of the elderly. All too often, this experience is accompanied by both physical and psychological decline. Based on self-determination theory, the aim was to qualitatively characterize support for self-determination in follow-up care and rehabilitation services (behaviours and attitudes of healthcare professionals, and patients' perception of them).

RESUMO

Many elderly people live well and at home, but some require somatic and psychiatric care. Mobile psychiatric teams for the elderly are called upon to intervene with people aged 65-70 and over who are experiencing psychological distress. Among senior citizens, addictive disorders are very common, and are associated with psychiatric and geriatric co-morbidities. Alcohol, tobacco and benzodiazepine use disorders require holistic, individualized care, based on identification, prevention and referral, as well as training and coordination of professionals and caregivers.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: To compare robotic assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) in well-selected older patients with clinically localized prostate cancer, compared to a younger population. Primary endpoint was perioperative outcomes comparison and secondary endpoint were oncological and functional outcomes comparison to a younger population. METHODS: Single tertiary center cohort of consecutive patients treated with RARP (2017-2020) with retrospective analysis. Patients were classified by age in two groups: <75: control group (CG) and ≥75: study group (SG). Patients aged ≥75 had a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and only patients classified Balducci ≤2 were admitted to surgery. RESULTS: Two hundred and sixty-nine patients were included, 56 in SG and 213 in CG. Median follow-up was 9.8 months. Univariate analysis showed no statistically significant (SS) difference between the groups for patients' characteristics (PSA, digital rectal examination -DRE- and biopsy Gleason Score), perioperative data (operative time, hospitalization length, transfusions rate, immediate complications, Clavien-Dindo complications, 30-days re-interventions and 30-days re-hospitalisation), oncological (TNM, margins, extraprostatic extension, postoperative PSA, BCR, metastases, overall survival -OS- and cancer specific survival -CSS-) and functional outcomes. Median perioperative blood loss was lower in the SG: 200.00 cc IQR [100.00, 300.00] vs 200.00cc IQR [100.00, 400.00] in the CG (P<0.05). A multivariate regression considering age>75, DRE, GS, PSA, cardiovascular history and diabetes showed none of variables associated with early BCR. Limitations are retrospective design, small number of patients and short follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: RARP shows similar perioperative, oncologic and functional outcomes for older patients selected by a CGA when compared to younger patients. The SG shows a minor perioperative bleeding. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV.

RESUMO

The ubiquitous presence of the elderly in care services raises questions about the evolution and limits of new techniques and technologies in the care relationship. We carried out a cross-sectional study in a geriatric ward, using parallel patient and carer questionnaires to assess how each felt about innovations, analyze their opportunities and evaluate their dangers in care provision.

RESUMO

The use of psychotropic drugs in the elderly is frequent, and can be problematic due to the risks associated with their inappropriate use and adverse effects. It is essential to adopt a cautious, individualized approach to prescribing psychotropic drugs, regularly assessing their efficacy and considering other non-drug approaches where possible. Collaboration between healthcare professionals and patients can contribute to more appropriate use of these drugs in the elderly.

RESUMO

The Assure approach (improvement of emergency care) is a project designed to improve emergency care for the 63,000 residents of homes for the dependent elderly (Ehpad) in the Ile-de-France region. By reinforcing the skills of caregivers in emergency situations and facilitating collaboration between care providers, the Assure approach is mobilizing, alongside all the Ehpad in the Ile-de-France region over a period of two years, the emergency medical assistance services, emergency physicians, mobile geriatric teams and nursing and care assistant training institutes.

RESUMO

In Canada, heart failure (HF) is the second leading cause of hospitalization among the elderly. Heart failure could be improved by the teach-back approach. There are no articles in the French literature describing this educational approach, especially in the context of elderly people living with HF. The aim of this article is to provide French-speaking healthcare professionals, including nurses, with knowledge about this approach, that also includes a specific component on self-care in HF.

RESUMO

The elaboration of a charter of ethics and support for the elderly, drawn up by Fabrice Gzil, places different notions of care at the center of the care of the elderly for those working in the field at the Groupe hospitalier sud Île-de-France (GHSIF). The 10 points presented are implemented on a daily basis. By highlighting these actions, the charter can be appropriated and brought to life in order to provide support adapted to the collective and individual needs of the elderly patients and residents.

RESUMO

Recurrent screaming and vocal agitation complicate geriatric and psychogeriatric care. They are among the psychobehavioral symptoms that accompany neurocognitive diseases. Reputedly difficult to manage, they require a comprehensive pharmacological and non-pharmacological approach. How can the care team deal with these disorders in the absence of a doctor?
