RESUMO

The Photoelectron-Related Image and Nano-Spectroscopy (PRINS) endstation located at the Taiwan Photon Source beamline 27A2 houses a photoelectron momentum microscope capable of performing direct-space imaging, momentum-space imaging and photoemission spectroscopy with position sensitivity. Here, the performance of this microscope is demonstrated using two in-house photon sources - an Hg lamp and He(I) radiation - on a standard checkerboard-patterned specimen and an Au(111) single crystal, respectively. By analyzing the intensity profile of the edge of the Au patterns, the Rashba-splitting of the Au(111) Shockley surface state at 300 K, and the photoelectron intensity across the Fermi edge at 80 K, the spatial, momentum and energy resolution were estimated to be 50 nm, 0.0172 Å-1 and 26 meV, respectively. Additionally, it is shown that the band structures acquired in either constant energy contour mode or momentum-resolved photoemission spectroscopy mode were in close agreement.

Electron delocalization and aromaticity was comparatively evaluated in recently synthesized figure-eight molecules made of two condensed U-shaped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon moieties connected either by two single bonds or by two para-phenylene groups. The selected examples include molecules that incorporate eight-membered and sixteen-membered rings, as well as a doubly [5]helicene-bridged (1,4)cyclophane. We probe whether some electron delocalization could occur through the stereogenic single bonds in these molecules: Is aromaticity purely (semi-)local, or possibly also global in these molecules? It was concluded that the situation can go from a purely (semi-)local character when the dihedral angle at the connecting single bonds is large, such as in biphenyl, to a predominantly (semi-)local character with a minor global contribution when the dihedral angle is small, such as in the para-phenylene connectors of the [5] helicene-bridged cyclophane.

INTRODUCTION: Contour maps enable risk classification of GIST recurrence in individual patients within 10 postoperative years. Although contour maps have been referred to in Japanese guidelines, their usefulness and role in determining indications for adjuvant therapy is still unclear in Japanese patients. The aims of this study are to investigate the validity of contour maps in Japanese patients with GIST and explore the new strategy for adjuvant therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1426 Japanese GIST patients who were registered to the registry by the Kinki GIST Study Group between 2003 and 2012 were analyzed. Patients who had R0 surgery without perioperative therapy were included in this study. The accuracy of contour maps was validated. RESULTS: Overall, 994 patients have concluded this study. Using contour maps, we validated the patients. The 5-year recurrence-free survival rates of patients within the GIST classification groups of 0-10%, 10-20%, 20-40%, 40-60%, 60-80%, 80-90%, and 90-100% were 98.1%, 96.6%, 92.3%, 48.0%, 37.3%, 41.0% and 42.4%, respectively. We confirmed that this classification by contour maps was well reflected recurrence prediction. Further, in the high-risk group stratified by the modified National Institutes of Health consensus criteria (m-NIHC), the 10-year RFS rate was remarkably changed at a cutoff of 40% (0-40% group vs. 40-100% group: 88.7% vs. 50.3%, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Contour maps are effective in predicting individual recurrence rates. And it may be useful for the decision of individual strategy for high-risk patients combined with m-NIHC.

The prevalent "core phonological deficit" model of dyslexia proposes that the reading and spelling difficulties characterizing affected children stem from prior developmental difficulties in processing speech sound structure, for example, perceiving and identifying syllable stress patterns, syllables, rhymes and phonemes. Yet spoken word production appears normal. This suggests an unexpected disconnect between speech input and speech output processes. Here we investigated the output side of this disconnect from a speech rhythm perspective by measuring the speech amplitude envelope (AE) of multisyllabic spoken phrases. The speech AE contains crucial information regarding stress patterns, speech rate, tonal contrasts and intonational information. We created a novel computerized speech copying task in which participants copied aloud familiar spoken targets like "Aladdin." Seventy-five children with and without dyslexia were tested, some of whom were also receiving an oral intervention designed to enhance multi-syllabic processing. Similarity of the child's productions to the target AE was computed using correlation and mutual information metrics. Similarity of pitch contour, another acoustic cue to speech rhythm, was used for control analyses. Children with dyslexia were significantly worse at producing the multi-syllabic targets as indexed by both similarity metrics for computing the AE. However, children with dyslexia were not different from control children in producing pitch contours. Accordingly, the spoken production of multisyllabic phrases by children with dyslexia is atypical regarding the AE. Children with dyslexia may not appear to listeners to exhibit speech production difficulties because their pitch contours are intact. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Speech production of syllable stress patterns is atypical in children with dyslexia. Children with dyslexia are significantly worse at producing the amplitude envelope of multi-syllabic targets compared to both age-matched and reading-level-matched control children. No group differences were found for pitch contour production between children with dyslexia and age-matched control children. It may be difficult to detect speech output problems in dyslexia as pitch contours are relatively accurate.

BACKGROUND: In this study, an automatic corneal contour extraction algorithm with a shared model is developed to extract contours from dynamic corneal videos containing noise, which improves the accuracy of corneal biomechanical evaluation and clinical diagnoses. The algorithm does not require manual labeling and completes the unsupervised semantic segmentation of each frame in corneal dynamic deformation videos based on a fully convolutional deep-learning network using corneal geometry and texture information. RESULTS: We included 1027 corneal videos at Tianjin Eye Hospital (Nankai University Affiliated Eye Hospital) from May 2020 to November 2021. The videos were obtained by the ultra-high-speed Scheimpflug camera, and then we used the shared model mechanism to accelerate the segmentation of corneal regions in videos, effectively resist noise, determine corneal regions based on shape factors, and finally achieve automatic and accurate extraction of corneal region contours. The Intersection over Union (IoU) of the extracted and real corneal contours using this algorithm reached 95%, and the average overlap error was 0.05, implying that the extracted corneal contour overlapped almost completely with the real contour. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to other algorithms, the method introduced in this study does not require manual annotation of corneal contour data in advance and can still extract accurate corneal contours from noisy corneal videos with good repeatability.

BACKGROUND: The eTEP Rives-Stoppa (RS) procedure, increasingly used for ventral hernia repair, has raised concerns about postoperative upper abdominal bulging. This study aims to objectively evaluate changes in the abdominal contour after eTEP RS and explore potential causes using a novel analytical tool, the Ellipse 9. METHODS: Thirty patients undergoing eTEP RS without posterior rectus sheath closure were assessed before and 3 months after surgery using CT scan images. Key measurements analyzed included the distance between linea semilunaris (X2), eccentricity over the Cord (c/a Cord), superior eccentricity (c/a Sup), Y2, and the superior perimeter of the abdomen. The Ellipse 9 tool, which provides graphical images and numerical representations, was utilized alongside patient-reported outcomes to assess perceived abdominal changes. RESULTS: The study group exhibited a trend toward a flatter abdomen with reduced distance between linea semilunaris(X2). However, 17% of patients developed upper abdominal bulging (5). Significant differences in c/a Cord, c/a Sup, Y2, and the superior perimeter of the abdomen, confirmed with Bonferroni corrections, were noted between bulging (5 patients) and non-bulging groups (25 patients). There was a notable disparity between patient perceptions and objective outcomes. CONCLUSION: The eTEP RS procedure improved abdominal contour in most patients from a selected cohort. The Ellipse 9 tool was valuable for the objective analysis of these changes. The cause of bulging post-eTEP RS is probably multifactorial. Notably, there was often a discrepancy between patient perceptions of bulging and objective clinical findings.

INTRODUCTION: Low cardiac output and hypovolemia are candidate macrocirculatory mechanisms explanatory of de novo anuria in intensive care unit (ICU) patients undergoing continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). We aimed to determine the hemodynamic parameters and CRRT settings associated with the longitudinal course of UO during CRRT. METHODS: This is an ancillary analysis of the PRELOAD CRRT observational, single-center study (NCT03139123). Enrolled adult patients had severe acute kidney injury treated with CRRT for less than 24 h and were monitored with a calibrated continuous cardiac output monitoring device. Hemodynamics (including stroke volume index [SVI] and preload-dependence, identified by continuous cardiac index variation during postural maneuvers), net ultrafiltration (UFNET), and UO were reported 4-hourly, over 7 days. Two study groups were defined at inclusion: non-anuric participants if the cumulative 24 h UO at inclusion was ≥0.05 mL kg-1 h-1, and anuric otherwise. Quantitative data were reported by its median [interquartile range]. RESULTS: Forty-two patients (age 68 [58-76] years) were enrolled. At inclusion, 32 patients (76%) were not anuric. During follow-up, UO decreased significantly in non-anuric patients, with 25/32 (78%) progressing to anuria within 19 [10-50] hours. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and UFNET did not significantly differ between study groups during follow-up, while SVI and preload-dependence were significantly associated with the interaction of study group and time since inclusion. Higher UFNET flow rates were significantly associated with higher systemic vascular resistances and lower cardiac output during follow-up. Multivariate analyses showed that (1) lower UO was significantly associated with lower SVI, lower MAP, and preload-independence; and (2) higher UFNET was significantly associated with lower UO. CONCLUSIONS: In ICU patients treated with CRRT, those without anuria showed a rapid loss of diuresis after CRRT initiation. Hemodynamic indicators of renal perfusion and effective volemia were the principal determinants of UO during follow-up, in relation with the hemodynamic impact of UFNET setting.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of two novel eyelid curvature measurements to distinguish between normal eyes and different severities of blepharoptosis. METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional analysis of upper eyelid curvature was performed for different severities of patients with unilateral blepharoptosis (congenital and aponeurotic) and normal controls. Mean upper lid contour index (ULCI) and area circularity index (ACI) were calculated for each group by dividing the intercanthal distance by upper eyelid margin length (ULCI) and dividing the interpalpebral area by the area of a circle enclosing the eye (ACI). The ratio of each index for the study and fellow normal eye of each patient was also calculated and compared between groups. RESULTS: A total of 106 eyes including 30 eyes in the control group and 25, 27, and 24 eyes in the mild, moderate, and severe ptosis groups were enrolled in the study. ULCI and ACI showed a statistically significant difference between the groups (p < 0.001, p < 0.001). The inter-eye ratio (ULCI-ratio and ACI-ratio) of indices was also significantly different between groups (p = 0.002, p < 0.001). Pairwise comparisons revealed that ACI and ACI-ratio were significantly different between all pairs of study groups. CONCLUSION: The results of our study showed that ACI based on area measurements may distinguish blepharoptosis patients from normal controls and from each other. Including the data from the fellow normal eyes in the form of ratio indices may improve the differentiating power. These results can be useful in designing the optimal eyelid curvature measurements.

PURPOSE: We defined sagittal S-line tilt (SSLT) as the tilt of the line connecting the upper instrumented vertebra and the lower instrumented vertebra. This study aimed to: (1) examine the correlation between SSLT and proximal junctional angle (PJA) change values, and (2) determine the cut-off value of SSLT with respect to proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) occurrence. METHODS: Eighty-six consecutive patients (81 female and 5 male; mean age: 15.8 years) with Lenke 5C AIS who underwent posterior selective spinal fusion. Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to examine the relationship between preoperative SSLT and changes in PJA from preoperative to 2 years postoperative. The impact of SSLT on PJK at 2 years after surgery was assessed using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS: We observed a moderate positive correlation between preoperative SSLT and change in PJA (R = 0.541, P < 0.001). We identified 18 patients (21%) with PJK at 2 years postoperative. Mean preoperative SSLT in the PJK group and the non-PJK group differed significantly at 23.3 ± 4.1° and 16.1 ± 5.0°, respectively (P < 0.001). The cut-off value of preoperative SSLT for PJK at 2 years postoperative was 18° in ROC curve analysis, with a sensitivity of 94%, specificity of 68%, and area under the ROC curve of 0.868. CONCLUSION: In selective lumbar fusion for AIS Lenke type 5C curves, preoperative SSLT was significantly correlated with PJA change from preoperative to 2 years postoperative. SSLT was a predictor of PJK occurrence, with a cut-off value of 18°.

PURPOSE: Volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) is a widely accepted treatment method for head and neck (HN) and cervical cancers; however, creating contours and plan optimization for VMAT plans is a time-consuming process. Our group has created an automated treatment planning tool, the Radiation Planning Assistant (RPA), that uses deep learning models to generate organs at risk (OARs), planning structures and automates plan optimization. This study quantitatively evaluates the quality of contours generated by the RPA tool. METHODS: For patients with HN (54) and cervical (39) cancers, we retrospectively generated autoplans using the RPA. Autoplans were generated using deep-learning and RapidPlan models developed in-house. The autoplans were, then, applied to the original, physician-drawn contours, which were used as a ground truth (GT) to compare with the autocontours (RPA). Using a "two one-sided tests" (TOST) procedure, we evaluated whether the autocontour normal tissue dose was equivalent to that of the ground truth by a margin, δ, that we determined based on clinical judgement. We also calculated the number of plans that met established clinically accepted dosimetric criteria. RESULTS: For HN plans, 91.8% and 91.7% of structures met dosimetric criteria for automatic and manual contours, respectively; for cervical plans, 95.6% and 95.7% of structures met dosimetric criteria for automatic and manual contours, respectively. Autocontours were equivalent to the ground truth for 71% and 75% of common DVH metrics for the HN and cervix, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that dosimetrically equivalent normal tissue contours can be created for HN and cervical cancers using deep learning techniques. In general, differences between the contours did not affect the passing or failing of clinical dose tolerances.

The accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI) generated contours for intact-breast and post-mastectomy radiotherapy plans was evaluated. Geometric and dosimetric comparisons were performed between auto-contours (ACs) and manual-contours (MCs) produced by physicians for target structures. Breast and regional nodal structures were manually delineated on 66 breast cancer patients. ACs were retrospectively generated. The characteristics of the breast/post-mastectomy chestwall (CW) and regional nodal structures (axillary [AxN], supraclavicular [SC], internal mammary [IM]) were geometrically evaluated by Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), mean surface distance, and Hausdorff Distance. The structures were also evaluated dosimetrically by superimposing the MC clinically delivered plans onto the ACs to assess the impact of utilizing ACs with target dose (Vx%) evaluation. Positive geometric correlations between volume and DSC for intact-breast, AxN, and CW were observed. Little or anti correlations between volume and DSC for IM and SC were shown. For intact-breast plans, insignificant dosimetric differences between ACs and MCs were observed for AxNV95% (p = 0.17) and SCV95% (p = 0.16), while IMNV90% ACs and MCs were significantly different. The average V95% for intact-breast MCs (98.4%) and ACs (97.1%) were comparable but statistically different (p = 0.02). For post-mastectomy plans, AxNV95% (p = 0.35) and SCV95% (p = 0.08) were consistent between ACs and MCs, while IMNV90% was significantly different. Additionally, 94.1% of AC-breasts met ΔV95% variation <5% when DSC > 0.7. However, only 62.5% AC-CWs achieved the same metrics, despite AC-CWV95% (p = 0.43) being statistically insignificant. The AC intact-breast structure was dosimetrically similar to MCs. The AC AxN and SC may require manual adjustments. Careful review should be performed for AC post-mastectomy CW and IMN before treatment planning. The findings of this study may guide the clinical decision-making process for the utilization of AI-driven ACs for intact-breast and post-mastectomy plans. Before clinical implementation of this auto-segmentation software, an in-depth assessment of agreement with each local facilities MCs is needed.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to demonstrate the potential clinical applicability of an organ-contour-driven auto-matching algorithm in image-guided radiotherapy. METHODS: This study included eleven consecutive patients with cervical cancer who underwent radiotherapy in 23 or 25 fractions. Daily and reference magnetic resonance images were converted into mesh models. A weight-based algorithm was implemented to optimize the distance between the mesh model vertices and surface of the reference model during the positioning process. Within the cost function, weight parameters were employed to prioritize specific organs for positioning. In this study, three scenarios with different weight parameters were prepared. The optimal translation and rotation values for the cervix and uterus were determined based on the calculated translations alone or in combination with rotations, with a rotation limit of ±3°. Subsequently, the coverage probabilities of the following two planning target volumes (PTV), an isotropic 5 mm and anisotropic margins derived from a previous study, were evaluated. RESULTS: The percentage of translations exceeding 10 mm varied from 9% to 18% depending on the scenario. For small PTV sizes, more than 80% of all fractions had a coverage of 80% or higher. In contrast, for large PTV sizes, more than 90% of all fractions had a coverage of 95% or higher. The difference between the median coverage with translational positioning alone and that with both translational and rotational positioning was 1% or less. CONCLUSION: This algorithm facilitates quantitative positioning by utilizing a cost function that prioritizes organs for positioning. Consequently, consistent displacement values were algorithmically generated. This study also revealed that the impact of rotational corrections, limited to ±3°, on PTV coverage was minimal.

This article utilizes the Canny edge extraction algorithm based on contour curvature and the cross-correlation template matching algorithm to extensively study the impact of a high-repetition-rate CO2 pulsed laser on the target extraction and tracking performance of an infrared imaging detector. It establishes a quantified dazzling pattern for lasers on infrared imaging systems. By conducting laser dazzling and damage experiments, a detailed analysis of the normalized correlation between the target and the dazzling images is performed to quantitatively describe the laser dazzling effects. Simultaneously, an evaluation system, including target distance and laser power evaluation factors, is established to determine the dazzling level and whether the target is recognizable. The research results reveal that the laser power and target position are crucial factors affecting the detection performance of infrared imaging detector systems under laser dazzling. Different laser powers are required to successfully interfere with the recognition algorithm of the infrared imaging detector at different distances. And laser dazzling produces a considerable quantity of false edge information, which seriously affects the performance of the pattern recognition algorithm. In laser damage experiments, the detector experienced functional damage, with a quarter of the image displaying as completely black. The energy density threshold required for the functional damage of the detector is approximately 3 J/cm2. The dazzling assessment conclusions also apply to the evaluation of the damage results. Finally, the proposed evaluation formula aligns with the experimental results, objectively reflecting the actual impact of laser dazzling on the target extraction and the tracking performance of infrared imaging systems. This study provides an in-depth and accurate analysis for understanding the influence of lasers on the performance of infrared imaging detectors.

RESUMO

Aiming at the problems of the poor robustness and universality of traditional contour matching algorithms in engineering applications, a method for improving the surface defect detection of industrial products based on contour matching algorithms is detailed in this paper. Based on the image pyramid optimization method, a three-level matching method is designed, which can quickly obtain the candidate pose of the target contour at the top of the image pyramid, combining the integral graph and the integration graph acceleration strategy based on weak classification. It can quickly obtain the rough positioning and rough angle of the target contour, which greatly improves the performance of the algorithm. In addition, to solve the problem that a large number of duplicate candidate points will be generated when the target candidate points are expanded, a method to obtain the optimal candidate points in the neighborhood of the target candidate points is designed, which can guarantee the matching accuracy and greatly reduce the calculation amount. In order to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm, functional test experiments were designed for template building function and contour matching function, including uniform illumination condition, nonlinear condition and contour matching detection under different conditions. The results show that: (1) Under uniform illumination conditions, the detection accuracy can be maintained at about 93%. (2) Under nonlinear illumination conditions, the detection accuracy can be maintained at about 91.84%. (3) When there is an external interference source, there will be a false detection or no detection, and the overall defect detection rate remains above 94%. It is verified that the proposed method can meet the application requirements of common defect detection, and has good robustness and meets the expected functional requirements of the algorithm, providing a strong technical guarantee and data support for the design of embedded image sensors in the later stage.

Machine vision is a desirable non-contact measurement method for hot forgings, as image segmentation has been a challenging issue in performance and robustness resulting from the diversity of working conditions for hot forgings. Thus, this paper proposes an efficient and robust active contour model and corresponding image segmentation approach for forging images, by which verification experiments are conducted to prove the performance of the segmentation method by measuring geometric parameters for forging parts. Specifically, three types of continuity parameters are defined based on the geometric continuity of equivalent grayscale surfaces for forging images; hence, a new image force and external energy functional are proposed to form a new active contour model, Geometric Continuity Snakes (GC Snakes), which is more percipient to the grayscale distribution characteristics of forging images to improve the convergence for active contour robustly; additionally, a generating strategy for initial control points for GC Snakes is proposed to compose an efficient and robust image segmentation approach. The experimental results show that the proposed GC Snakes has better segmentation performance compared with existing active contour models for forging images of different temperatures and sizes, which provides better performance and efficiency in geometric parameter measurement for hot forgings. The maximum positioning and dimension errors by GC Snakes are 0.5525 mm and 0.3868 mm, respectively, compared with errors of 0.7873 mm and 0.6868 mm by the Snakes model.

PURPOSE: To analyze the upper eyelid contour after Müller's muscle conjunctiva resection (MMCR) performed by four different surgeons. METHODS: Comparative cross-sectional analysis of the pre- and postoperative contours of a control group and four groups of upper lids (n = 88) of 65 patients who underwent MMCR at four international centers. The procedure employed was essentially the same as described by Putterman but performed with different instruments to entrap the posterior lamella. Multiple medial and lateral margin lid distances were measured on Bézier lines expressing the pre- and postoperative lid contours. RESULTS: Preoperatively, two groups had significant lateral and medial ptosis. After MMCR, the lateral segment of the lid's contour was corrected in all groups. In the two groups with more pronounced ptosis, the nasal lid contour was undercorrected. CONCLUSIONS: In MMCR, regardless of the instrument used to entrap the posterior lamella, the amount of medial tissue resection is essential to avoid postoperative nasal undercorrection. BACKGROUND: The use of three-dimensional imaging in breast augmentation with silicone implants has revolutionized the surgery planning process by providing detailed visualizations of expected post-surgical outcomes. This technology enhances the decision-making process, enabling patients to choose their implants with greater confidence and ultimately leading to higher satisfaction with the postoperative outcome. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the accuracy of 3D imaging simulations using the Canfield Vectra XT 3D system in predicting breast augmentation outcomes in Chinese patients, focusing on volume, surface contour, breast anterior-posterior (AP) Projection, and breast internal angle. METHODS: Our study analyzed female patients who received breast augmentation, documenting their preoperative and three-month postoperative conditions with 3D Vectra XT system images. Exclusions were made for patients undergoing concurrent breast surgeries or those with tuberous or ptotic breasts, due to limitations of the imaging system. Implants used were either round textured or anatomically shaped cohesive silicone gel, inserted subpectorally through trans-axillary or inframammary incisions, based on personalized evaluations. A detailed comparison between preoperative simulations and actual postoperative outcomes was conducted, focusing on volume, surface contour, AP projection, and internal angle variations. Statistical significance was determined through paired T tests, P < 0.05. RESULTS: In the analysis of preoperative simulations for determining postoperative outcomes in breast surgery, our study involving 42 Chinese patients, a total of 84 breasts, was conducted. The results indicated a mean volumetric discrepancy of 21.5 ± 10.3 (SD) cubic centimeters between the simulated and actual postoperative outcomes, achieving an accuracy rate of 91.9%. The root mean square deviation for the breast surface geometry was calculated to be 4.5 ± 1.1 (SD) millimeters (mm), demonstrating a low variance between the predicted and observed outcomes. The investigation found no significant variations across any specific areas of the breast surface, highlighting the uniform accuracy of the simulations across the entire breast. Additionally, the mean differences in Anterior-Posterior (AP) projection and internal angle were determined to be 8.82 ± 5.64 mm and 0.48 ± 1.91 (SD) degrees, respectively. These findings collectively attest to the efficacy of preoperative simulations in accurately predicting the postoperative physical appearance of breasts, thereby providing a valuable tool for surgical planning and improving the consultation process for patients. CONCLUSIONS: The Canfield Vectra XT 3D system has proven to be remarkably accurate in predicting the volumetric outcomes of breast augmentation surgery, with an accuracy rate exceeding 91.9%. It stands as a valuable tool for surgeons and patients alike, enhancing the preoperative planning process by offering a realistic preview of surgical results. This advancement not only facilitates a deeper understanding and setting of realistic expectations for patients but also strengthens the communication between patients and surgeons, ultimately leading to higher satisfaction rates with the surgical outcomes. It also emphasizes the significance of detailed documentation and consent processes in protecting against legal repercussions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to further guide the diagnosis and treatment programs for clinical facial contouring with injectable fillers by studying the facial contour parameters and proportion preferences consistent with Asian aesthetics. METHODS: A total of 89 subjects (42 males and 47 females aged 20-60 years) who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in this study. The subjects were grouped by age, sex, and external contour attractiveness score, and the external contour aesthetic parameters and proportions of the subjects in different groups were measured and analysed. RESULTS: The upper facial breadth and lower facial breadth decreased with age, with significant differences between the 50-60-year age group and other age groups (P < 0.01). The nasomental angle showed a decreasing trend with age, with significant differences between the 40-49-year age group and the 20-29-year and 30-39-year age groups (P < 0.05). Males and females were significantly different in calva height, total head height, lower facial height, and calva height to total head height ratio (P < 0.05). With increasing age, the external contour attractiveness scores of males and females both showed decreasing trends, with significant differences between the 50-60-year age group and other age groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The calva height and the cranioauricular angle have a significant impact on external contour attractiveness. In general, temporal depression, cheek sagging, lateral cheek depression, and an ill-defined mandibular border will occur due to ageing, collagen loss, ligament laxity and sagging, and soft tissue atrophy and sagging, reducing the attractiveness of the external contour. This paper discusses two quite different computational experiments relating to the formation of σ-hole bonds A···B. The first involves looking at the complex at equilibrium and finding the contour X of the electronic density which allows the iso-density envelopes of A and B to be nearly touching. This contour increases, becoming closer to the nuclei, as the strength of the interaction increases. The second experiment involves allowing A and B to approach each other, with the aim of finding the distance at which their 0.001 a.u. iso-density envelopes are nearly merging into one envelope. What is found in the second experiment may be somewhat surprising, in that the ratio of the distance between interacting atoms at this nearly merging point-divided by the sum of the van der Waals radii of these atoms-covers a narrow range, typically between 1.2 and 1.3. It is intriguing to note that for the dataset presented, approaching molecules attracted to each other appear to do so unknowing of the strength of their ultimate interaction. This second experiment also supports the notion that one should expect favorable interactions, in some instances, to have close contacts significantly greater than the sums of the van der Waals radii.
