BACKGROUND: Effective teaching methods are needed to improve students' abilities in hand-eye coordination and understanding of cardiac anatomy in echocardiography education. Simulation devices have emerged as innovative teaching tools and exhibited distinctive advantages due to their ability to provide vivid and visual learning experiences. This study aimed to investigate the effect of simulation of sectional human anatomy using ultrasound on students' learning outcomes and satisfaction in echocardiography education. METHODS: The study included 18 first-year clinical medical students with no prior echocardiography training. After randomization, they underwent a pre-test to assess basic knowledge. Following this, the students were divided into two groups: traditional teaching (traditional group) and simulation of sectional human anatomy using ultrasound (digital group). Each group received 60 min of instruction. Post-tests were assigned to students at two different time points: immediately after the lecture, and one week later (referred to as post-tests 1, and 2). In addition, anonymous questionnaires were distributed to students after class to investigate their satisfaction with teaching. RESULTS: Both groups showed significant improvement in their scores on post-test 1 compared to pre-test (traditional group: from 33.1 ± 8.8 to 48.1 ± 13.1, P = 0.034 vs. digital group: from 35.0 ± 6.7 to 58.0 ± 13.2, P = 0.008). However, there were no significant differences between the two groups in several post-test comparisons. Student satisfaction ratings revealed that the digital group experienced significantly greater satisfaction in areas such as subject interest, teaching style, course alignment, and interaction compared to the traditional group. Additionally, 80% of the digital group strongly endorsed the use of simulation of sectional human anatomy using ultrasound for echocardiography teaching, highlighting its effectiveness. CONCLUSIONS: Simulation of sectional human anatomy using ultrasound may improve students' understanding of echocardiography and satisfaction with the course. Our study provides evidence supporting the use of simulation teaching devices in medical education. Further research is needed to explore the long-term impact of this teaching method on students' learning outcomes and its integration into the medical curriculum. BACKGROUND: 3D visualization technology applies computers and other devices to create a realistic virtual world for individuals with various sensory experiences such as 3D vision, touch, and smell to gain a more effective understanding of the relationships between real spatial structures and organizations. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of 3D visualization technology in human anatomy teaching/training and explore the potential factors that affect the training effects to better guide the teaching of classroom/laboratory anatomy. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies on teaching human anatomy using 3D visualization technology. We extensively searched three authoritative databases, PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase; the main outcomes were the participants' test scores and satisfaction, while the secondary outcomes were time consumption and enjoyment. Heterogeneity by I² was statistically determined because I²> 50%; therefore, a random-effects model was employed, using data processing software such as RevMan, Stata, and VOSviewer to process data, apply standardized mean difference and 95% confidence interval, and subgroup analysis to evaluate test results, and then conduct research through sensitivity analysis and meta-regression analysis. RESULTS: Thirty-nine randomized controlled trials (2,959 participants) were screened and included in this study. The system analysis of the main results showed that compared with other methods, including data from all regions 3D visualization technology moderately improved test scores as well as satisfaction and enjoyment; however, the time that students took to complete the test was not significantly reduced. Meta-regression analysis also showed that regional factorsaffected test scores, whereas other factors had no significant impact. When the literature from China was excluded, the satisfaction and happiness of the 3D virtual-reality group were statistically significant compared to those of the traditional group; however, the test results and time consumption were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: 3D visualization technology is an effective way to improve learners' satisfaction with and enjoyment of human anatomical learning, but it cannot reduce the time required for testers to complete the test. 3D visualization technology may struggle to improve the testers' scores. The literature test results from China are more prone to positive results and affected by regional bias.

Effective communication and precise navigation within the intricacies of the human body rely on robust anatomical terminology. Since its creation by the Federative Committee on Anatomical Terminology (FCAT), the Terminologia Anatomica (TA 1998) has consistently served as the benchmark in the field. However, the constant advancement of anatomical knowledge requires regular revisions, updates, and enhancements of anatomical nomenclature to accommodate the latest scientific discoveries. The recent adoption of the second edition of Terminologia Anatomica (TA 2019) by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA) has drawn attention to certain notable omissions. Despite over a century of dedicated work establishing standard anatomical terminology, specific widely recognized gross anatomical structures are still absent from the official listing in the Terminologia Anatomica. There is, however, a consensus that the inclusion of names for trivial or variably present structures should be avoided. Accordingly, this article focuses on a thoughtfully selected group of anatomical structures, which are so important that they are routinely discussed during anatomy courses, despite their exclusion from the official lists of anatomical terms. These basic structures hold fundamental importance for both anatomy education and clinical practice. Consequently, their appropriate nomenclature warrants consideration for inclusion in future editions of TA.

Learning human anatomy is essential for Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) education. Body donors are traditionally utilized to understand content, but in a hybrid learning environment, students have limited time to use body donors. To improve body donor access and learning, we created online synchronous pre-body donor activities. The impact of these online strategies on students' subsequent exams and final grade were investigated in a non-randomized, observational study. These activities were hypothesized to positively influence students' anatomy performance. In a 16-week semester, DPT students (case [n = 91], control [n = 22]) participated in a hybrid program of asynchronous/synchronous online learning and two in-person immersions. Measures included student course grades and teaching surveys. Spearman's rho correlations analyzed the relationship between four pre-body donor quizzes to body donor exams, written exams, and final course grade. Mann-Whitney U tests assessed differences in grades between cohorts. A linear regression model examined the influence of pre-body donor quizzing on exams/final grades. Correlation tests revealed a strong relationship between the average pre-body donor quiz score and both the first written exam and final course grade (p = 0.0001). The case group achieved significantly higher scores than the control group on the first in-person body donor exam (p = 0.011), the second written exam (p = 0.0001), and the final grade (p = 0.004). The pre-body donor quizzes predicted performance on the subsequent in-person body donor exams, written exams, and the final grade. Implementation of online pre-body donor learning activities was associated with increased academic performance among hybrid DPT students and may aid in learning anatomy concepts for clinical practice.

PURPOSE: The biceps brachii muscle (BBM) is a large and thick muscle on the ventral portion of the upper arm. The scientific literature reports the existence of extra heads. OBJECTIVE: The present work investigated the frequency of occurrence of BBM accessory head(s) in four different Anatomy Laboratories at universities in Northeast Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Once the upper limbs with an anatomical variation of the BBM heads were identified, the accessory head was evaluated for morphometric characterization (the length, width, and thickness). RESULTS: The sample consisted of 249 upper limbs and the outcomes were 26 members with BBM accessory heads (10.44% of the total sample). Among the 26 members studied was found a single accessory head in 22 (84.62%), two accessory heads in 3 (11.54%), and three accessory heads in 1 (3.85%). BBMs with one, two, and three accessory heads were found, with different origins. The average length, width, and thickness of these accessory heads were 169.39mm, 10.25mm, and 3.39mm, respectively. CONCLUSION: The frequency of BBM accessory heads in a population of northeastern Brazil in this cadaveric study was 10.44%.

INTRODUCTION: The quadriceps femoris muscle is present in the anterior region of the thigh and is classically described as a muscle with four heads: rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and vastus intermedius. A few years ago, a "fifth head" was described and named the tensor of the vastus intermedius (TVI). The TVI belly is in line with the belly of the vastus lateralis, and its aponeurosis imposes considerable tension on the vastus intermedius, medializing its action, to play a significant role in knee extension. OBJECTIVE: To perform a study of the TVI incidence in a Brazilian population and describe its variations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We dissected lower limbs from cadavers previously fixed in 10% formaldehyde, belonging to the Laboratory of Anatomy of the Department of Morphology of the Biosciences Center of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. RESULTS: Eighty-one lower limbs were analyzed with only 33 (40.74%) of them presenting TVI. All four types of TVI described by the literature were present in our sample with the following distribution: type 1 with 15.15%; type 2 with 9.1%; type 3 with 33.33%; type 4 with 42.42%. DISCUSSION: Although the literature points to the TVI as a normal belly of the quadriceps, making it a "quinticeps", our analysis points to the TVI as a variation and probably a matter of regionality. However, the presence of TVI is not a rare case and cannot be disregarded, which makes this study important for anatomists, physiotherapists, physicians, and surgeons.

INTRODUCTION: The clavicle's nutrient foramen is a surrogate marker for its nutrient artery. Knowing its location may be useful for interpreting fractures and to avoid iatrogenic lesions. The aim of this review was to determine the prevalence, number, location, and direction of the nutrient foramen. METHODS: Embase, Medline, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched and supplemented by Google Scholar, hand-searching major anatomical journals, and the reference list of included studies (updated March 08, 2022). Titles and abstracts were screened for eligibility, and observational studies with quantitative data were included based on full text evaluation. Internal validity was assessed using the anatomical quality assessment tool. Pooled prevalence proportions were derived using a random effects DerSimonian-Laird model using the Freeman-Tukey double arcsine transformation with Miller's inverse back-transformation. RESULTS: From 18,889 unique reports, 33 studies with 3760 clavicles and 3358 foramina were included. All studies suffered from untransparent reporting. The prevalence of the nutrient foramen was 97.75%, 95% confidence interval 94.70%-99.60%. It was mainly found as a single foramen on the middle third segment's posterior surface with acromial (lateral) obliquity. Results were stable over time, robust to sensitivity analyses, albeit limited by unexplained heterogeneity and asymmetry. CONCLUSION: This review may aid in interpreting fractures passing through a high-risk area (mean foraminal index range 36.31-61.03%) for lesions to the nutrient artery. Practical implications are a need to update current inaccurate textbook descriptions and further advocate evidence-based anatomy to improve conduct and reporting of anatomical research.

PURPOSE: It remains unclear whether concomitant changes in the thoracolumbar (TL) vertebrae and lumbar plexus roots seen in experimental embryology are present in humans with different vertebral formulas, particularly in humans with 18 TL vertebrae. We thus investigated the human lumbar plexus root changes occurring in spines with an additional TL vertebra (18TL). METHODS: The lumbosacral plexus was macroscopically dissected in TL anomaly cases found in 161 computed tomography examinations. TL anomalies were distinguished as simple abnormalities in total TL count and abnormal TL trade-offs, i.e., exchanges between the last thoracic and first lumbar vertebrae, and were analyzed separately. RESULTS: One additional TL vertebra (7C_18TL_5S) was observed in 4/159 cases (2.5%), excluding cases with cervical and sacral abnormalities. Different from the unclear shifts of nerve roots in cases with 16TL and 17TL trade-offs, the 18TL trade-off tended to involve a caudal shift at the cranial limit, without event change at the caudal limit. In addition, only one nerve segment shift was reconfirmed with a change in two vertebral segments from 16 to 18 TL vertebrae. CONCLUSIONS: We revealed that concomitant changes in the lumbar plexus roots and vertebrae in humans with 18TL vertebrae may become more pronounced than those in humans with 16 or 17TL vertebrae, by approaching the typical mammalian TL formula (19TL). This study showed that the TL formula can be used to estimate changes in the lumbar plexus roots, which may assist in the planning of nerve-sparing spinal and pelvic surgery.

This study examines how lower secondary school students understand the circulatory system, using the structure-behavior-function (SBF) framework for conceptual representation. It evaluates the progress of students' understanding after interventions with two different teaching approaches, one using a biology textbook supported by augmented reality (AR) technology and the other using only a textbook as a main source of information. The data analysis is based on the assumption that systemic understanding demands the perception of three system dimensions: the components forming the system at all levels of organization (its structures), the interactions and mechanisms between them (its behavior), and the function as a whole outcome (its phenomena). The results indicate that both learning approaches contribute to a higher level of understanding the circulatory system. The group using AR-supported educational materials showed statistically significant better improvements in their knowledge of the circulatory system, including all three components of the SBF framework.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study examines how lower secondary school students understand the circulatory system, using the structure-behavior-function (SBF) framework for conceptual representation. It confirms that the use of augmented reality (AR) can help lower secondary school students understand the complexity of the circulatory system. The group using AR-supported instructional materials showed statistically significant better improvements in their knowledge of the circulatory system, including all three components of the SBF framework.

The social distancing measures necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in the migration of human anatomy lessons to virtual platforms. Even student communities have had to relocate online. The virtual replacement of visual-spatial and social elements, essential for studying anatomy, has posed particular challenges for educators. Our department used Microsoft Teams, an online communication platform, in conjunction with Visible Body, a 3D anatomical modeling program, EdiErmes online resources, and Leica Acquire for teaching microscopic anatomy. We delivered about 160 h of both synchronous and asynchronous lessons for students on the medical degree program per academic year. In this study, we compare face-to-face and distance teaching in order to define these different approaches better and to evaluate the final student scores. The aim is to debate the relevance of distance learning pedagogy to the design of new online anatomy teaching courses and the development of online learning. Analysis of the final scores showed that anatomy examinations after the online course had a statistically significantly higher average value than those obtained at the end of the face-to-face course. The experience at the University of Genoa shows that distance learning in the teaching of human anatomy was perceived by most students as useful and positive. Distance learning can be an effective support for anatomy teaching, facilitating a different mode of learning in which lessons and study are more sensitive to the individual's schedule and needs. Of course, we should not and cannot exclude face-to-face teaching.

The aim of this study is to analyze differences in participation, and in the results obtained in the anatomy and histology exams, over two academic years of the Sport Sciences degree course. During the first semester of the academic year 2019/2020 both the lectures and the exam took place face-to-face, while during the academic year 2020/2021 everything was done online. Statistical analysis revealed that the online modality was especially advantageous for the anatomy exam. Students' opinions were also assessed through a short questionnaire. The results showed that teachers involved themselves in both groups. Students needed to interact socially with teachers and colleagues and to ask them questions. Even if the differences were not significant, the difference was greater for face-to-face students in most comparisons. Finally, the most common methods of peer communication were by social media.

Information related to human anatomy is present throughout the educational process, especially in undergraduate courses in the biomedical area. These courses have complex theoretical and practical contents, and this becomes more evident when they are developed for the visually impaired. The objective of this work was to perform a systematic review on the teaching of human anatomy for the visually impaired. After the protocol was registered on the PROSPERO platform (CRD42022306002), 10 electronic databases were manually searched with the descriptors "teaching human anatomy" and "visually impaired." Intervention studies were selected without date or language restrictions. In the end, only eight studies were found. Tactile materials produced manually, and Braille and cadaveric pieces, are assessed as good tools for teaching human anatomy to the visually impaired. There is a pressing need for adaptations of teaching methods to make the teaching more accessible and inclusive.

PURPOSE: Human anatomy is a core course of basic medicine and the first professional course for medical students. Traditional teaching includes "teacher-centered" instruction, passive learning, and a lack of interaction between teachers and students as well as between students. The aim of this study was to develop a "student-centered" multielement fusion teaching mode to address the mentioned drawbacks. METHODS: A total of 141 clinical medical students from grades 2016 and 2017 of Chengde Medical University participated in this study. The students were randomly divided into four classes: two experimental classes and two control classes. The experimental classes experienced a "student-centered" multielement fusion teaching mode, while the control classes experienced a traditional teaching method. Formative assessments and questionnaires were used to assess the students' preferences and obtain feedback. Theoretical and experimental tests were carried out to detect the students' scores at the end of the semester. RESULTS: The results of the questionnaires demonstrated that 100% of the students agreed that the multielement teaching mode was better. In the experimental test, the students in the experimental group achieved a mean score of 16.50 ± 0.3203, which was significantly higher than that of the control group 12.65 ± 0.4731 (P < 0.01). In the theoretical test, the average score of the experimental group was 45.86 ± 0.6273 and that of the control group was 46.59 ± 0.6636; thus, there was no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The application of a "student-centered" multielement fusion teaching mode obtained strong approval from the students. This teaching mode not only improved students' interest in learning and increased the interaction between teachers and students as well as between students but also enhanced students' competence and will lay a solid foundation for their future careers.

Since time immemorial, bodies of deceased have been an integral part of teaching anatomy, and therefore the study of medicine. Without them, the teaching of anatomy, clinical anatomy and many research projects could not be realized. Nowadays, the European countries allow to use exclusively bodies of the deceased donors. Recently, we have registered a growing trend in the needs of the bodies not only for the purposes of medical education, but also for those of clinical anatomy. The question also arose of the suitability of using COVID-19 positive donors or the legislative possibility of obtaining bodies in the absence of donors in the donor program. Our communication addresses current issues of body donation for teaching and research purposes and their use in the Czech Republic.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether body proportions change as stature increases in elite Spanish athletes. The sample includes a total of 2,030 participants, comprised of 1,357 adult males, and 673 adult females. The male athletes were classified into five groups by stature, and the female athletes were classified separately into four stature groups. Ten anthropometric measurements were collected, and eleven body proportions were calculated. The body proportions with significant differences between stature groups in males were relative arm length (0.53-1.60%), relative forearm length (0.69-2.08%), relative thigh length (1.17-1.56%), relative tibial length (1.37-6.39%), cormic index (-0.94 - -4.49%), Manouvrier index (1.60-9.60%), and crural index (1.05-4.79%). In females, the body proportions with significant differences were relative forearm length (1.43%), relative thigh length (1.94-3.88%), relative tibial length (2.74-4.56%), cormic index (-0.74 - -3.72%), and Manouvrier index (1.97-8.71%). The distal parts of the upper and lower limbs increase proportionally as stature increases, whereas relative hand and foot lengths, which are the most distal parts of the extremities, remain constant in elite athletes.

The body donation program of Peking Union Medical College was established in May 1999. From May 1999 to December 2017, a total of 5,576 registrants registered and 1,459 donors donated their bodies. Demographic and medical characteristics of the donors were analyzed. The top four causes of death were neoplasms, heart diseases, respiratory diseases, and cerebrovascular diseases. Age at death among donors who died of neoplasms were significantly lower than other causes of death (all p < .05), and the interval between registration and donation among donors who died of neoplasms was significantly shorter than that among donors with other causes (all p < .001). The age of donors when they registered (p < .001) and donated (p < .001) was significantly older than that of general Beijing population. This study may provide a guide for medical colleges or research institutions to establish or enhance their own body donation programs.

This article examines in contextual depth the investigations of Indigenous Australian ancestral bodily remains by four influential British Darwinian comparative anatomists active between 1860 and 1919: George Rolleston (1829-1881), William Henry Flower (1831-1899), Alexander Macalister (1844-1919), and William Turner (1832-1916). It also reviews the examination of the structural morphology of the brains of four Indigenous Australians by Macalister's protégé, Wynfrid Lawrence Henry Duckworth (1870-1956). Since the 1970s, Darwinian scientists of the last third of the long nineteenth century have been represented in connection with the efforts of Indigenous Australian communities to have the remains of their ancestors returned for burial, as having acquired and investigated their skulls and other bodily structures to prove their evolutionary inferiority, and thereby legitimate their violent dispossession and near enslavement under so-called 'protective' regimes, where they struggled to maintain their families' health and well-being, their languages and culture. Racialized perceptions of Indigenous Australians as an evolutionarily primitive human type were perniciously influential among Australian-based and metropolitan British scientists, intellectuals, politicians and government officials during the last third of the long nineteenth century. However, as this article aims to show, by contextual scrutiny of the reportage of these leading four anatomists on their investigation of the skulls and brains of the first peoples of Tasmania and mainland Australia, they had no interest in proving Indigenous inferiority. They were driven by curiosity as to what investigation of the bodily remains of Indigenous Australians might disclose about the evolutionary genealogy of humankind. Hence, we would do well to see the outcomes of their investigations as having more complex connections with racialized perceptions of Australia's first peoples beyond medico-scientific circles, and the formulation of colonialist solutions for managing their future in the aftermath of dispossession by settler colonialism.

The anatomical basis underlying the neuromodulation effects seen with pulmonary vein (PV) isolation (PVI) is not fully understood. Left atrial (LA) electro-anatomical maps of 38 patients who underwent catheter cardioneuroablation for vagally mediated bradycarrhythmias were studied. During the procedure, LA ganglionic plexi (GPs) were systematically identified and ablated. Design PVI lines were created on these maps by a blinded observer, and the degree of overlap between four GPs and individual PVs was assessed. Here, 1.7 ± 7 (35.5 ± 17.0%) of the total 31.6 ± 10 GP ablation sites per patient were found to overlap with the design PVI lines. The overlap was higher for the right-sided GPs, p < .001. The degree of GP-PV overlap varied: 1 PV in 5 (13.2%) patients, 2 PVs in 15 (39.2%), 3 PVs in 16 (42.1%), and all 4 PVs in 2 (5.3%). No patient had zero GP-PV overlap. A vagal response was most commonly observed during ablation at the left superior GP (89.5%), while a sympathetic response was observed most often during the right superior GP ablation (97.4%). Some degree of GP-PV antral overlap is the norm, and this is more pronounced for the right-sided PVs. There is significant individual variability in the degree of overlap which may explain why neuromodulation effects are not seen universally following PVI.

AIM: The aim of this study was to describe all the possible approaches for laparoscopic splenic flexure mobilization (SFM), each suitable for specific situations, and create an illustrated system to show SFM approaches in an easy and practical way to make it easy to learn and teach. METHODS: Two different phases. First part: Cadaver-based study of the colonic splenic flexure anatomy. In order to demonstrate the different approaches, a balloon was placed through the colonic hepatic flexure in the lesser sac without sectioning any of the fixing ligaments of the splenic flexure. Second part: A real case series of laparoscopic SFM. RESULTS: First part: 11 cadavers were dissected. Five potential approaches to SFM were found: anterior, trans-omentum, lateral, medial infra-mesocolic, and medial trans-mesocolic. The illustrative system developed was named: Splenic Flexure "Box"(SFBox). Second part: One of the types of SFM described in first part was used in five patients with colorectal cancer. Each laparoscopic approach to the splenic flexure was illustrated in a video accompanied by illustration aids delineating the access. CONCLUSION: With the cadaver dissection and subsequent demonstration in real-life laparoscopic surgery, we have shown five types of laparoscopic splenic flexure mobilization. The Splenic Flexure "Box" is a useful way to learn and teach this surgical maneuver.

The integrated mechanisms of heart contraction are some of the most complex processes for undergraduate biomedical students to understand. Visual models have the potential to enhance learning environments by providing visual representations of complex mechanisms. Despite their benefits, the use of visual models in undergraduate classrooms is still limited. For this study, we tested the effect of a learning sequence of activities related to the cardiac cycle using an augmented reality (AR) application for smartphones and tablets. We were interested in understanding the ability of students to draw and label figures reflecting cardiac function after experiencing the learning sequence using AR. Undergraduate students of the biomedical sciences (control n = 43, experimental n = 58) were enrolled in the course, and their drawings were evaluated using multiple levels of complexity (1 = basic to 5 = complex) through a pre-/posttest structure that included a learning sequence based on AR in the experimental group and regular lecture-based activities in the control group. The complexity of students' drawings was evaluated on the anatomical, physiological, and molecular aspects of heart contraction. We used Cohen's kappa index for interrater reliability when determining the complexity of drawings. Control and experimental groups showed no differences in baseline knowledge (preexamination quiz). The students who experienced the AR activities showed an increase in the complexity of representation levels in posttest results and also showed a significant difference in scores for the final exam in the heart physiology course. Our results indicate that using AR enhances the comprehension of anatomical and physiological concepts of the cardiac cycle for undergraduate biomedical students.
