PURPOSE: Infectious spondylitis is caused by hematogenous seeding or adjacent soft tissue infection. No study has provided evidence that incubating biopsy specimens in blood culture bottles could enhance detection rates, nor has any study compared this method with conventional culture techniques. We aimed to assess the diagnostic yield of open microsurgical biopsies for infectious spondylitis and the efficacy of various culture media in the presence and absence of pre-biopsy antibiotic therapy. METHODS: This retrospective study, which was conducted at a university-affiliated teaching hospital in Korea, enrolled 165 adult patients with suspected infectious spondylitis between February 2014 and September 2020. The diagnostic yield of open biopsy was compared among three culture media, namely, blood culture bottles, swab culture using transport media, and tissue culture using plain tubes, while considering preoperative antibiotic exposure. RESULTS: Causative bacteria were identified in 84.2% of all cases. Blood culture bottles had the highest positivity rate (83.5%), followed by swab cultures (64.4%) and tissue cultures (44.9%). The differences in positivity rates were significant (P < 0.001). Preoperative antibiotic therapy reduced detection rates across all media, particularly in tissue cultures. CONCLUSIONS: We established the high diagnostic yield of open microsurgical biopsy using blood culture bottles, suggesting that pre-biopsy antibiotic therapy significantly affects bacterial detection, thereby underscoring the importance of culture medium selection in the diagnosis of infectious spondylitis.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic spondylitis is a condition with low incidence that can lead to neurological sequelae and even life-threatening conditions. While conservative methods, including antibiotics and bracing, are considered the first-line treatment option for pyogenic spondylitis, it is important to identify patients who require early surgical intervention to prevent progressive neurologic deficits or deterioration of the systemic condition. Surgical treatment should be considered in patients with progressive neurologic deficits or deteriorating systemic condition. However, currently, there is a lack of treatment guidelines, particularly with respect to whether surgical treatment is necessary for pyogenic spondylitis. This study aims to analyze the radiological epidural abscess on MRI and clinical factors to predict the need for early surgical intervention in patients with pyogenic spondylitis and provide comprehensive insight into the necessity of early surgical intervention in these patients. METHODS: This study retrospectively reviewed 47 patients with pyogenic spondylitis including spondylodiscitis, vertebral osteomyelitis, epidural abscess, and/or psoas abscess. All patients received plain radiographs, and a gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. All patients have either tissue biopsies and/or blood cultures for the diagnosis of a pathogen. Demographic data, laboratory tests, and clinical predisposing factors including comorbidities and concurrent other infections were analyzed. RESULTS: We analyzed 47 patients, 25 of whom were female, with a mean age of 70,7 years. MRI revealed that 26 of 47 patients had epidural abscesses. The surgical group had a significantly higher incidence of epidural abscess than the non-surgical group (p = 0.001). In addition, both CRP and initial body temperature (BT) were substantially higher in the surgical group compared to the non-surgical group. There was no significant difference between the surgical group and the non-surgical group in terms of age, gender, comorbidities, and concurrent infectious disorders, as well as the number of affected segments and affected spine levels. However, the surgical group had lengthier hospital stays and received more antibiotics. CONCLUSION: The presence of an epidural abscess on MRI should be regarded crucial in the decision-making process for early surgical treatment in patients with pyogenic spondylitis in order to improve clinical outcomes.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of fluoroscopy guided transpedicular abscess infusion and drainage in thoracic-lumbar spondylitis with prevertebral abscess. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 14 patients with infectious spondylitis with prevertebral abscesses from January 2019 to December 2022. All patients underwent fluoroscopy guided transpedicular abscess infusion and drainage. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), visual analog scale (VAS), Macnab criteria, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were compared before and after the operation to evaluate clinical outcomes. RESULTS: Among the 14 patients with prevertebral abscesses, 64.29% (9/14) involved the lumbar spine and 35.71% (5/14) involved the thoracic spine. The ESR, CRP, and VAS scores decreased from 87.34 ± 9.21, 93.01 ± 11.17, and 8.38 ± 0.97 preoperatively to 12.35 ± 1.61, 8.52 ± 1.19, and 2.02 ± 0.64 at the final follow-up, respectively. MRI at the final follow-up showed the disappearance of the prevertebral abscess compared with that in the preoperative group (66.95 ± 12.63 mm in diameter). Ten patients achieved an "excellent" outcome, while the remaining four patients obtained a "good" outcome according to the Macnab criteria. CONCLUSION: Fluoroscopy guided transpedicular abscess infusion and drainage is a safe and minimally invasive procedure for the management of thoracic-lumbar spondylitis with a prevertebral abscess.

Gemella bergeri, a member of the genus Gemella, is a facultatively anaerobic, Gram-positive cocci. G. bergeri is a component of normal oral flora; however, it can become pathogenic and cause infections in patients with poor oral hygiene. A 78-year-old man was admitted to a hospital with a complaint of increasing posterior neck pain and lower back pain for 2 weeks. MRI was suggestive of infectious spondylitis at the C3-C4 level with prevertebral abscess formation, anterior epidural abscess formation. We identified Gemella bergeri in closed pus obtained during the surgery. Herein, we describe the first case of infective spondylitis caused by G. bergeri.

BACKGROUND: Kytococcus species has not been considered a pathogen, but infections caused by this species are increasing. There are several cases of infections caused by Kytococcus sedentarius, but no case of infectious spondylitis has been reported yet. CASE PRESENTATION: A 79-year-old female patient was hospitalized because of back pain for several months. She was diagnosed with infectious spondylitis, and K. sedentarius was cultured from the pus and specimen obtained during the surgical procedure. The patient recovered completely without recurrence after 6 months of treatment with ciprofloxacin alone for 8 weeks. CONCLUSION: This is the first case report of infectious spondylitis caused by K. sedentarius.

BACKGROUND: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) under hemodialysis (HD) are at greater risks of infectious spondylitis (IS), but there is no reliable predictor that facilitate early detection of this relatively rare and insidious disease. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records from patients with ESRD under HD over a 12-year period was performed at a tertiary teaching hospital, and those with a first-time diagnosis of IS were identified. A 1:4 propensity score-matched case-control study was carried out, and baseline characteristics, underlying diseases, and laboratory data were compared between the study group and the control group, one month before the date of diagnosis or the index date respectively. RESULTS: A total of 16 patients with IS were compared with 64 controls. After adjustment, recent access operation (odds ratio [OR], 13.27; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.53 to 49.91; p < 0.001), degenerative spinal disease (OR, 12.87; 95% CI, 1.89 to 87.41; p = 0.009), HD through a tunneled cuffed catheter (OR, 6.75; 95% CI, 1.74 to 26.14; p = 0.006), low serum levels of hemoglobin, albumin, as well as high levels of red blood cell volume distribution width (RDW), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and high sensitivity C-reactive protein were significant predictors for a IS diagnosis one month later. Receiver operating characteristic curves for hemoglobin, RDW, ALP, and albumin all showed good discrimination. The further multivariate models identified both high serum ALP levels and low serum RDW levels following a recent access intervention in patients with relatively short HD vintages may be indicative of the development of IS. CONCLUSION: Patients under HD with relatively short HD vintages showing either elevated ALP levels or low RDW levels following a recent access intervention should prompt clinical awareness about IS for timely diagnosis.

Background: Spectrum monitoring of the pathogen in spondylitis patients plays a key role in preventing infectious complications of spinal reconstructions in chronic spondylitis (CS) and in the treatment of surgical site infection (SSI). The aim of this study is to characterize the spectrum of SSI pathogens in CS requiring revision surgery. Methods: The primary cohort encompassed 569 surgical patients with infectious CS. In 99 patients (61 men and 38 women) requiring revision surgical interventions due to SSI, continuous microbiological monitoring of the pathogens was conducted. The average age of the patients was 63 ± 14 years. The vast majority of the patients underwent surgery on a set of multilevel (two or more spinal-motor segments) lesions. Lesions of the lumbar spine were more often noted, and lesions of the thoracic, thoracolumbar, and cervical spine sections were less often noted. This study included all patients operated on within the scope of revision spinal reconstructions in connection with the development of infection of the surgical area over the period from January 2018 to December 2022. Inclusion criteria were etiologically verified spondylitis, age of 18 years or older, and follow-up of 6 months or more. Results: The average rate of revision surgery due to SSI was 17.4%. Germ detection from the material of vertebral localization was noted in 48.3% and pathogen strains were isolated in urine in 60.8%, in decubital ulcers in 23.9%, and in hemoculture in 15.2% of all study patients. Aseptic, deep SSI was detected in 10.1%. Gram-positive, multidrug-resistant, and Gram-negative bacteria with extreme resistance prevailed in the microbiological landscape of late SSI, early, and delayed Gram-positive strains without drug resistance. Conclusions: Infectious etiology of spondylitis is associated with a significantly higher frequency of SSI. In the absence of a positive result from bacteriological examination of the vertebral localization material, it is advisable to conduct blood, decubital ulcer discharge, and urine sampling.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical efficacy of ultrasonic bone scalpel (UBS)-assisted unilateral biportal endoscopic lamina osteotomy replantation (ULOR) for treating lumbar infectious spondylitis (LIS). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with LIS who had therapy with UBS-assisted ULOR at our hospital between January 2020 and May 2023. A total of 17 instances matched the inclusion criteria, consisting of 7 females and 10 males. The UBS was utilized during surgery to extract the lamina completely, followed by large bone grafting to fuse the cleaned intervertebral space. The study recorded and analyzed various parameters in the included patients before and after surgery. RESULTS: All 17 patients underwent a successful operation with an average duration of 136.82 ± 21.35 minutes, average blood loss of 77.43 ± 10.19 ml, and an average follow-up period of 18.55 ± 3.47 months. Following the surgical intervention, the patients experienced a substantial improvement in their clinical symptoms, accompanied by a significant drop in white blood cell, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein levels (all P < 0.001). The postoperative visual analog scale scores and Oswestry Disability Index showed considerable improvement (both P < 0.001). The postoperative Cobb angle and intervertebral space height were significantly corrected (P < 0.001). At the last follow-up, the success rate of lumbar fusion was 100%, and there were no instances of infection recurring. CONCLUSIONS: The use of ULOR with assistance from UBS for the treatment of LIS has proven to be beneficial. It provides significant relief from symptoms and corrects lumbar deformity. This surgical procedure is both effective and safe.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to analyze the clinical outcomes of percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic debridement and drainage (PTEDD) with accurate pathogen detection for patients with infectious spondylitis of the thoracolumbar and lumbar spines. METHODS: From January 2017 to February 2019, a consecutive series of 43 patients with infectious spondylitis of the thoracolumbar and lumbar spine were surgically treated with PTEDD. Organism culture, next-generation DNA sequencing, and pathological examination of the sample extracted from the infectious site were performed for accurate microbiological diagnosis. All patients were followed up for 24-36 months. Clinical and radiological outcomes were analyzed preoperatively and postoperatively. RESULTS: Surgeries were completed successfully on all 43 patients under local infiltration anesthesia. Positive culture of the responsible organism was obtained in 33 cases (76.7%). Among the 43 patients who underwent next-generation DNA sequencing, 42 (97.7%) had positive results. Corresponding antibiotic medication was given based on the pathogen detection. The modified Macnab criteria were found to be excellent in 32 patients (74.4%) and good in 11 (25.6%). Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging showed that the abscess and infectious area were reduced significantly at 3 months and had disappeared or almost disappeared at the final follow-up. Spontaneous fusion was obtained in 30 patients (69.8%). No patients required revision or conversion to open debridement and reconstruction. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with infectious spondylitis of the thoracolumbar and lumbar spine, PTEDD is an effective and safe treatment. Next-generation DNA sequencing is a much more sensitive method for detecting the responsible organisms.

Purpose: The incidence of bloodstream infection among end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients on chronic hemodialysis (HD) was 26-fold higher than population controls, causing higher morbidity and costs. The aim of this investigation was to clarify the prognostic factors, in-hospital outcomes and recurrence of infectious spondylitis of patients with and without chronic HD. Patients and Methods: This nationwide study analyzed 2592 patients who admitted for first-time infectious spondylitis between January 1, 2003, and December 31, 2015. Patients were classified into the chronic HD or the non-HD group. The logistic regression model and the general linear model were utilized to determine the impact of chronic HD on in-hospital mortality and recurrence. The Cox proportional hazard model was used to estimate the predictive factors of in-hospital mortality and recurrence. Results: Compared to the non-HD group, patients in the chronic HD group had a higher risk of respiratory failure, sepsis, in-hospital mortality, longer hospital stay, and higher medical spending. Chronic HD was an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality (hazard ratio 2.21, 95% confidence interval 1.34-3.65, p=0.0019), but not for recurrence. Intravascular device implantation or revision was a prognosticator for the mortality of both groups and a predictor for recurrence of the non-HD group. Surgical treatment was associated with a decreased risk of recurrence, whereas treatment with CT-guided abscess drainage was associated with an increased risk of recurrence in both groups. Conclusion: Patients with infectious spondylitis who were receiving chronic HD had a higher in-hospital mortality compared to those without HD. Intravascular device implantations or revision within 6 months was a significant predictor of in-hospital mortality and disease recurrence. Surgical treatment of infectious spondylitis had a lower risk of recurrence than those with CT-guided abscess drainage in both patient groups.

INTRODUCTION: In patients under immunosuppression or severe sepsis, it is sometimes manifested as coexisting septic arthritis and spondylitis. The aim of this study is to evaluate and investigate the risk factors of infectious spondylitis associated with septic arthritis. METHODS: The study retrospectively reviewed the patients diagnosed with infectious spondylitis between January 2010 and September 2018 for risk factors of coexisting major joint septic arthritis. RESULTS: A total of 10 patients with infectious spondylitis and coexisting septic arthritis comprised the study group. Fifty matched patients with solely infectious spondylitis were selected as the control group. Major risk factors include preoperative C-reactive protein (p = 0.001), hypoalbuminemia (p = 0.011), history of total joint replacement (p < 0.001), duration of preoperative antibiotics treatment (p = 0.038) and psoas muscle abscess (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Infectious spondylitis and septic arthritis are thought of as medical emergencies due to their high mortality and morbidity. Our study evaluated 5 risk factors as significant major findings: hypoalbuminemia (<3.4 g/dL), higher preoperative CRP (>130 mg/L), psoas muscle abscess, longer preoperative antibiotics treatment (>8 days) and history of total joint replacement. Clinicians should pay attention to the patients with those five factors to detect the coexisting infections as early as possible.

PURPOSE: To identify the independent risk factors for adverse outcomes and determine the effect of L5-S1 involvement on the outcome of surgical treatment of lumbar pyogenic spondylitis (PS). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for all consecutive patients who underwent surgery for lumbar PS between November 2004 and June 2020 at a single institution. The patients were divided into two groups based on the outcomes: good and adverse (treatment failure, relapse, or death). Treatment failure was defined as persistent or worsening pain with C-reactive protein (CRP) reduction less than 25% from preoperative measurement or requiring additional debridement. Relapse was defined as the reappearance of symptoms and signs with an elevated white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and CRP after the first period of treatment. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the independent risk factors for adverse outcomes. RESULTS: Twenty-four (21.2%) of the 113 patients were classified as having adverse outcomes: treatment failure, relapse, and death occurred in 15, 7, and 2 patients, respectively. The involvement of L5-S1 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 6.561, P = 0.004), Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection (aOR = 6.870, P = 0.008), polymicrobial infection (aOR = 12.210, P = 0.022), and Charlson comorbidity index (CCI; P = 0.005) were identified as significant risk factors for adverse outcomes. CONCLUSION: Involvement of L5-S1, MRSA, polymicrobial infection, and CCI were identified as independent risk factors for adverse outcomes after surgical treatment of lumbar PS. Because L5-S1 is anatomically demanding to access anteriorly, judicious access and thorough debridement are recommended in patients requiring anterior debridement of L5-S1.

METHODS: We used a national database managed by the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) with data from the years 2007 and 2016. A total of 9655 newly diagnosed patients with PS or TS were correspondingly enrolled in the PS or TS group. Chi square test analyses were used to compare the PS and TS groups. RESULTS: The overall incidence of infectious spondylitis during the study period was 9655 persons. The PS and TS groups consisted of 7305 and 2350 cases, respectively. Individual medical costs in the PS group (USD 10,049 ± 94 vs. USD 16,672 ± 17,729, P < 0.001) and the TS group (USD 4882 ± 6869 vs. USD 8531 ± 10,709, P < 0.001) both increased. The total medical cost for the PS group increased significantly between 2007 and 2016 in Korea (USD 24,428,560 vs. USD 81,044,196, P < 0.001). In contrast, the total medical cost for the TS group decreased between 2007 and 2016 in Korea (USD 8,573,038 vs. USD 4,879,520, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This nationwide study shows that the total medical cost of PS has increased and that the total medical cost of TS has decreased between 2007 and 2016 in Korea.

OBJECTIVE: We attempted to compare the incidence of pyogenic spondylitis (PS) and tuberculous spondylitis (TS) between 2007 and 2016. Furthermore, we investigated the patients who underwent surgery in 2016 compared to that in 2007. METHODS: We used a nationwide database managed by the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) in 2007 and 2016. Total 9655 patients with a newly diagnosis of PS or TS were enrolled in PS or TS group. Among them, 1721 patients underwent either fusion or decompression surgery. We analyzed demographic distribution of patients according to gender and age and year of diagnosis. RESULTS: Comparing between 2007 and 2016, the incidence of PS has increased in 2016 than in 2007 (4874 vs. 2431, p<0.0001). Conversely, declination of incidence of TS was discovered in 2016 compared to 2007 (594 vs. 1756, p<0.0001). Females showed predominance over males regarding both PS and TS (5228 vs. 4427, p<0.0001). Among them, the number of PS patients who underwent surgery increased significantly in 2016 relative to that in 2007 (979 vs. 592, p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: This nationwide study suggests that PS may increase and TS may decrease in Korea. In addition, demand for surgery regarding PS may increase.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol-containing hand sanitizers are part of the strategy to prevent person-to-person transmission during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this report was to present a case of ethanol-induced hand sanitizer intoxication after spine surgery in a patient with a postoperative delirious state. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 63-year-old man was admitted to the spine department with intractable back pain as the main symptom and diagnosed with infectious spondylitis with discitis. The patient suddenly showed mental changes, resulting in a semi-comatose mental state the first day after surgery, without seizure-like activity and asphyxia. We subsequently discovered the patient had consumed half of an ethanol hand sanitizer bottle (about 300-400 mL) which was placed at the foot of the bed to prevent infection transmission during the COVID-19 pandemic. The patient did not tend to depend on alcohol or psychiatric medication in the past, and had no addiction. After seven months, the patient had complete bone union and independent ambulation. DISCUSSION: Acute ethanol intoxication can result in life-threatening clinical effects. One of the major problems after orthopedic surgery is delirium, with the largest number appearing after spine surgery. CONCLUSION: Hand sanitizer, mainly composed of ethanol, did not cause abnormal findings or interfere with the course of treatment of infectious spondylitis. However, it is expected that such accidents will increase, due to the increase in the use of hand sanitizers caused by COVID-19. It is, therefore, necessary to avoid potential patient abuse, especially after spinal surgery in patients at risk of delirium.

Minimally invasive surgery is becoming popular for treating spinal disorders. The advantages of percutaneous endoscopic debridement and drainage (PEDD) for infectious spondylitis include direct observation of the lesion, direct pus drainage, and earlier pain relief. We retrospectively reviewed 37 patients who underwent PEDD and 31 who underwent traditional anterior open debridement and interbody fusion with bone grafting from 2004 to 2012. The causative organisms were isolated from 30 patients (81.1%) following PEDD, and from 25 patients (80.6%) following open surgery (p = 0.48). Staphylococcus aureus was the most common pathogen (38.2%). In the PEDD group, blood loss (<50 mL versus 585 ± 428 mL, p < 0.001) was significantly lesser and the duration of hospitalization (24.4 ± 12.5 days versus 31.5 ± 14.6 days, p = 0.03) was shorter than that in the open surgery group. Serologically, there were significantly faster C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) normalization rates in the PEDD group (p < 0.001, p = 0.009, respectively). In the two-year follow-up radiographs, 26 out of 30 (86.7%) open surgery patients showed bony fusions of the infected segments. On the contrary, sclerotic change of the destructive endplates was observed and the motion of infected spinal segments was still preserved in the PEDD group. There was no significant difference in the change of sagittal profile, including primary correction gain, correction loss, and actual correction gain/loss. PEDD is an effective alternative option and should be considered prior to traditional extensive spinal surgery-particularly for patients with early-stage spinal infection or serious complicated medical conditions.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of lumbar infectious spondylitis is controversial. In this study, we attempted to demonstrate that unilateral percutaneous endoscopic debridement with physiologic saline and negative pressure drainage postoperatively may achieve a satisfactory result in lumbar infectious spondylitis. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 17 patients with lumbar infectious spondylitis who underwent percutaneous endoscopic debridement and drainage (PEDD) through a posterolateral transforaminal approach. Each biopsy specimen was submitted without delay after surgery and examined for microorganisms and evaluated histopathologically. Patients were assessed by careful physical examination, MacNab criteria, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), visual analog scale (VAS), regular serological tests, imaging studies for clinical function, and patient satisfaction. RESULTS: Of the 17 patients, 14 (82.4%) had satisfactory relief of their back pain according to MacNab criteria at 1 week after PEDD. Three patients (17.6%) who had advanced infections with multilevel involvement and paraspinal abscesses underwent anterior debridement and autograft interbody fusion with instrumentation within 2 weeks. However, there were no other severe surgery-related complications. Causative bacteria were identified in most cases, and Staphylococcus aureus was the most prevalent strain. CONCLUSIONS: Unilateral PEDD with physiological saline or empirical antibiotics did not disrupt lumbar stability and avoided the important intraspinal structures such as the dural sac and nerve roots. It not only had a high rate of identification of the causative pathogen, but also provided effective infection control and pain relief. PEDD may be a useful technique for treatment of lumbar infectious spondylodiscitis patients who have no severe deformities and are unable to undergo the conventional anterior surgery due to poor health or advanced age.

AIM: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate and compare clinical outcomes in patients aged >65 years and <65 years who have undergone surgery for infectious spondylitis, and to identify any prognostic factors. METHODS: We reviewed 60 consecutive patients treated surgically for infectious spondylitis. We reviewed patients' medical records especially focusing on comorbidities, preoperative serum albumin levels, postoperative complications and control of infection on follow up. Statistical analysis was carried out to determine whether these various factors affected clinical outcomes. RESULTS: Postoperative complication rates (P = 0.764) and infection control rates (P = 0.275) were not significantly different between the two groups. Univariate analysis did not show a correlation between age and clinical outcome, whereas body mass index (BMI; P = 0.04), Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI; P = 0.017), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade (P = 0.006) and serum albumin (P = 0.003) were associated with overall postoperative complications. BMI (P = 0.002) and CCI (P = 0.000) were also associated with postoperative fatalities. The χ2 -test for trend also showed that CCI (P = 0.018), ASA grade (P = 0.007) and low serum albumin (<3.5 mg/dL; P = 0.004) were associated with postoperative complications. Logistic regression analysis showed that ASA grade (P = 0.034) and BMI (P = 0.044) were related to overall postoperative complications. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis using ASA grade and BMI to predict major postoperative complications and fatality showed an area under the curve value of 0.793 (P = 0.001) and 0.942 (p=0.002), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: BMI, ASA grade, CCI scores and serum albumin levels, rather than age, might be useful in predicting clinical outcome in surgery for infectious spondylitis in elderly patients.
