RESUMO

Cell junctions play key roles in epithelial integrity. During development, when epithelia undergo extensive morphogenesis, these junctions must be remodeled in order to maintain mechanochemical barriers and ensure the cohesion of the tissue. In this Review, we present a comprehensive and integrated description of junctional remodeling mechanisms in epithelial cells during development, from embryonic to adult epithelia. We largely focus on Drosophila, as quantitative analyses in this organism have provided a detailed characterization of the molecular mechanisms governing cell topologies, and discuss the conservation of these mechanisms across metazoans. We consider how changes at the molecular level translate to tissue-scale irreversible deformations, exploring the composition and assembly of cellular interfaces to unveil how junctions are remodeled to preserve tissue homeostasis during cell division, intercalation, invagination, ingression and extrusion.

RESUMO

The discoveries of ferromagnetism down to the atomically thin limit in van der Waals (vdW) crystals by mechanical exfoliation have enriched the family of magnetic thin films [C. Gong et al., Nature 546, 265-269 (2017) and B. Huang et al., Nature 546, 270-273 (2017)]. However, compared to the study of traditional magnetic thin films by physical deposition methods, the toolbox of the vdW crystals based on mechanical exfoliation and transfer suffers from low yield and ambient corrosion problem and now is facing new challenges to study magnetism. For example, the formation of magnetic superlattice is difficult in vdW crystals, which limits the study of the interlayer interaction in vdW crystals [M. Gibertini, M. Koperski, A. F. Morpurgo, K. S. Novoselov, Nat. Nanotechnol. 14, 408-419 (2019)]. Here, we report a strategy of interlayer engineering of the magnetic vdW crystal Fe3GeTe2 (FGT) by intercalating quaternary ammonium cations into the vdW spacing. Both three-dimensional (3D) vdW superlattice and two-dimensional (2D) vdW monolayer can be formed by using this method based on the amount of intercalant. On the one hand, the FGT superlattice shows a strong 3D critical behavior with a decreased coercivity and increased domain wall size, attributed to the co-engineering of the anisotropy, exchange interaction, and electron doping by intercalation. On the other hand, the 2D vdW few layers obtained by over-intercalation are capped with organic molecules from the bulk crystal, which not only enhances the ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC), but also substantially protects the thin samples from degradation, thus allowing the preparation of large-scale FGT ink in ambient environment.

RESUMO

Photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by selective oxygen reduction is a green and cost-effective alternative to the energy-intensive anthraquinone process. Although inexpensive polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) exhibits the ability to produce H2O2, its disordered and amorphous structure leads to a high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers and hinders charge transfer between layers. Herein, we predict that stacked polymeric g-C3N4 with ion intercalation (K+ and I-) can improve carrier separation and transfer by multiscale computational simulations. The electronic structures of g-C3N4 were tailored and modified by intercalating K+ and I- into the layer-by-layer structures. Guided by the computational predictions, we achieved efficient solar-driven H2O2 production by employing this facile and ion-intercalated crystalline g-C3N4. An H2O2 production rate of 13.1 mM g-1 h-1 and an apparent quantum yield of 23.6% at 400 nm were obtained. The synergistic effects of crystallinity regulation and dual interstitial doping engineering triggered the formation of new light absorption centers, the establishment of rapid charge diffusion channels, and the enhancement of two-electron oxygen reduction characteristics. This work sheds light on the dual tuning of crystallinity and electronic structure and broadens the design principles of organic-conjugated polymer photocatalysts for environmental remediation and energy conservation.

RESUMO

Ventral tail bending, which is transient but pronounced, is found in many chordate embryos and constitutes an interesting model of how tissue interactions control embryo shape. Here, we identify one key upstream regulator of ventral tail bending in embryos of the ascidian Ciona. We show that during the early tailbud stages, ventral epidermal cells exhibit a boat-shaped morphology (boat cell) with a narrow apical surface where phosphorylated myosin light chain (pMLC) accumulates. We further show that interfering with the function of the BMP ligand Admp led to pMLC localizing to the basal instead of the apical side of ventral epidermal cells and a reduced number of boat cells. Finally, we show that cutting ventral epidermal midline cells at their apex using an ultraviolet laser relaxed ventral tail bending. Based on these results, we propose a previously unreported function for Admp in localizing pMLC to the apical side of ventral epidermal cells, which causes the tail to bend ventrally by resisting antero-posterior notochord extension at the ventral side of the tail.

RESUMO

Looming concerns regarding scarcity, high prices, and safety threaten the long-term use of lithium in energy storage devices. Calcium has been explored in batteries because of its abundance and low cost, but the larger size and higher charge density of calcium ions relative to lithium impairs diffusion kinetics and cyclic stability. In this work, an aqueous calcium-ion battery is demonstrated using orthorhombic, trigonal, and tetragonal polymorphs of molybdenum vanadium oxide (MoVO) as a host for calcium ions. Orthorhombic and trigonal MoVOs outperform the tetragonal structure because large hexagonal and heptagonal tunnels are ubiquitous in such crystals, providing facile pathways for calcium-ion diffusion. For trigonal MoVO, a specific capacity of ∼203 mAh g-1 was obtained at 0.2C and at a 100 times faster rate of 20C, an ∼60 mAh g-1 capacity was achieved. The open-tunnel trigonal and orthorhombic polymorphs also promoted cyclic stability and reversibility. A review of the literature indicates that MoVO provides one of the best performances reported to date for the storage of calcium ions.

RESUMO

Substantial improvements in cycle life, rate performance, accessible voltage, and reversible capacity are required to realize the promise of Li-ion batteries in full measure. Here, we have examined insertion electrodes of the same composition (V2O5) prepared according to the same electrode specifications and comprising particles with similar dimensions and geometries that differ only in terms of their atomic connectivity and crystal structure, specifically two-dimensional (2D) layered α-V2O5 that crystallizes in an orthorhombic space group and one-dimensional (1D) tunnel-structured ζ-V2O5 crystallized in a monoclinic space group. By using particles of similar dimensions, we have disentangled the role of specific structural motifs and atomistic diffusion pathways in affecting electrochemical performance by mapping the dynamical evolution of lithiation-induced structural modifications using ex situ scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements, and phase-field modeling. We find the operation of sharply divergent mechanisms to accommodate increasing concentrations of Li-ions: a series of distortive phase transformations that result in puckering and expansion of interlayer spacing in layered α-V2O5, as compared with cation reordering along interstitial sites in tunnel-structured ζ-V2O5 By alleviating distortive phase transformations, the ζ-V2O5 cathode shows reduced voltage hysteresis, increased Li-ion diffusivity, alleviation of stress gradients, and improved capacity retention. The findings demonstrate that alternative lithiation mechanisms can be accessed in metastable compounds by dint of their reconfigured atomic connectivity and can unlock substantially improved electrochemical performance not accessible in the thermodynamically stable phase.

RESUMO

The lithium supply issue mainly lies in the inability of current mining methods to access lithium sources of dilute concentrations and complex chemistry. Electrochemical intercalation has emerged as a highly selective method for lithium extraction; however, limited source compositions have been studied, which is insufficient to predict its applicability to the wide range of unconventional water sources (UWS). This work addresses the feasibility and identifies the challenges of Li extraction by electrochemical intercalation from UWS, by answering three questions: 1) Is there enough Li in UWS? 2) How would the solution compositions affect the competition of Li+ to major ions (Na+/Mg2+/K+/Ca2+)? 3) Does the complex solution composition affect the electrode stability? Using one-dimensional olivine FePO4 as the model electrode, we show the complicated roles of major ions. Na+ acts as the competitor ion for host storage sites. The competition from Na+ grants Mg2+ and Ca2+ being only the spectator ions. However, Mg2+ and Ca2+ can significantly affect the charge transfer of Li+ and Na+, therefore affecting the Li selectivity. We point to improving the selectivity of Li+ to Na+ as the key challenge for broadening the minable UWS using the olivine host.

RESUMO

There is evidence of the presence of intercalated water between graphene and the substrate in electronic devices. However, a proper understanding of the impact of this phenomenon, which causes important limitations for the optimization of graphene-based devices operating in aqueous electrolytes, is missing. We used graphene-based electrodes on insulating and conducting substrates to evaluate the impact of intercalated water by combining experimental techniques with numerical simulations. Results show that the capacitance of the conductive substrate/graphene electrodes is significantly higher than that of the insulating substrate/graphene ones. Meanwhile, Raman spectroscopy demonstrates that graphene charge modulation with the applied potential is independent of the substrate conductivity. We found that this intriguing behavior is influenced by the water intercalation phenomena and governed by the substrate conductive nature. This work contributes to the understanding of the electric response of graphene-based devices in an aqueous environment and of the methods to measure and model it.

RESUMO

Intercalation of several elements (Ag, Bi, In, Mo, Os, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Sb, and W) is used to chemically alter a wide range of properties of two-dimensional layered α-MoO3. Intercalation modifies acoustic phonons and elastic constants, as measured with Brillouin scattering. Intercalation alters electronic bandgaps, color, structure, Raman shifts, and electron binding energies. Optical chemochromism is demonstrated with intercalants changing the color of MoO3 from transparent to brilliant blue (In, Mo, Os, and Ru) and orange (Ag). Correlations are investigated among material properties. There is evidence that in-plane longitudinal stiffness c11 correlates with changes in the bandgap, while various Raman modes appear to be connected to a variety of properties, including shear modulus c55, Mo binding energies, lattice constants, and the preferred crystal structure of the intercalant. The results indicate a surprising degree of complexity, suggesting competition among multiple distinct mechanisms and interactions involving specific intercalant species.

RESUMO

DNA nanotubes with controllable geometries hold a wide range of interdisciplinary applications. When preparing DNA nanotubes of varying widths or distinct chirality, existing methods require repeatedly designing and synthesizing specific DNA sequences, which can be costly and laborious. Here, we proposed an intercalator-assisted DNA tile assembly method which enables the production of DNA nanotubes of diverse widths and chirality using identical DNA strands. Through adjusting the concentration of intercalators during assembly, the twisting direction and extent of DNA tiles could be modulated, leading to the formation of DNA nanotubes featuring controllable widths and chirality. Moreover, through introducing additional intercalators and secondary annealing, right-handed nanotubes could be reconfigured into distinct left-handed nanotubes. We expect that this method could be universally applied to modulating the self-assembly pathways of various DNA tiles and other chiral materials, advancing the landscape of DNA tile assembly.

RESUMO

Protonation represents a fundamental chemical process with promising applications in the fields of energy, environment, and memory devices. Probing the protonation mechanism, however, presents a formidable challenge owing to the elusiveness of intercalated protons. In this work, we utilize the atomic and electronic structure changes associated with protonation to directly image the proton intercalation pathways in α-MoO3 induced by UV illumination. We reveal the anisotropic intercalation behavior which is initiated by photocatalyzed water dissociation preferentially at the (001) edges and then propagates along the c axis, transforming α-MoO3 into HxMoO3 to realize photochromism. This photochromic process can be reversed via heating in air, leading to anisotropic proton deintercalation, also preferentially along the c axis. The observed anisotropic behavior can be attributed to the intrinsically low energy barriers for both proton migration along the c axis and water dissociation/formation at (001) edges.

RESUMO

Metallene materials with atomic thicknesses are receiving increasing attention in electrocatalysis due to ultrahigh surface areas and distinctive surface strain. However, the continuous strain regulation of metallene remains a grand challenge. Herein, taking advantage of autocatalytic reduction of Cu2+ on biaxially strained, carbon-intercalated Ir metallene, we achieve control over the carbon extraction kinetics, enabling fine regulation of carbon intercalation concentration and continuous tuning of (111) in-plane (-2.0%-2.6%) and interplanar (3.5%-8.8%) strains over unprecedentedly wide ranges. Electrocatalysis measurements reveal the strain-dependent activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), where weakly strained Ir metallene (w-Ir metallene) with the smallest lattice constant presents the highest mass activity of 2.89 A mg-1Ir at -0.02 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Theoretical calculations validated the pivotal role of lattice compression in optimizing H binding on carbon-intercalated Ir metallene surfaces by downshifting the d-band center, further highlighting the significance of strain engineering for boosted electrocatalysis.

RESUMO

Reverse electron transfer (RET), an abnormal backward flow of electrons from complexes III/IV to II/I of mitochondria, causes the overproduction of a reduced-type CoQ to boost downstream production of mitochondrial superoxide anions that leads to ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) to organs. Herein, we studied low-coordinated gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) with abundant oxygen-binding sites to form an electron-demanding trapper that allowed rapid capture of electrons to compensate for the CoQ/CoQH2 imbalance during RET. The AuNCs were composed of only eight gold atoms that formed a Cs-symmetrical configuration with all gold atoms exposed on the edge site. The geometry and atomic configuration enhance oxygen intercalation to attain a d-band electron deficiency in frontier orbitals, forming an unusually high oxidation state for rapid mitochondrial reverse electron capture under a transient imbalance of CoQ/CoQH2 redox cycles. Using hepatic IRI cells/animals, we corroborated that the CoQ-like AuNCs prevent inflammation and liver damage from IRI via recovery of the mitochondrial function.

RESUMO

Intercalation of guest ions into a van der Waals (vdW) gap in layered materials is a powerful route to create novel material phases and functionalities. Ionic gating is a technique to control the motions and configuration of ions for both intercalation and surface electrostatic doping. The advance of ionic gating enables the in situ probe of dynamics of ion diffusion, carrier doping, and transport properties. Here we performed in situ resistivity and Raman experiments on the potassium ion (K+) intercalation of single-crystal MoS2 and constructed a temperature-carrier density phase diagram. The K+-intercalation induces a structural transition from the prismatically coordinated phase to the octahedrally coordinated phase, where anisotropic three-dimensional superconductivity and a possible charge density wave state were observed. The present ionic gating offers a comprehensive view of the intercalated phases and proves that the electrostatically induced superconductivity is distinct from that in the intercalated phase.

RESUMO

Bilayer graphene (BLG) has recently been used as a tool to stabilize encapsulated single sheets of various layered materials and tune their properties. It was also discovered that the protecting action of graphene sheets makes it possible to synthesize completely new two-dimensional materials (2DMs) inside the BLG by intercalating various atoms and molecules. In comparison to the bulk graphite, BLG allows for easier intercalation and a much larger increase in the interlayer separation of the sheets. Moreover, it enables studying the atomic structure of the intercalated 2DM by using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in this area, with a special focus on new materials created inside BLG. We compare the experimental findings with the theoretical predictions, pay special attention to the discrepancies, and outline the challenges in the field. Finally, we discuss unique opportunities offered by intercalation into 2DMs beyond graphene and their heterostructures.

RESUMO

Edges and surfaces play indispensable roles in affecting the chemical-physical properties of materials, particularly in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with reduced dimensionality. Herein, we report a novel edge/surface structure in multilayer 1T-TiSe2, i.e., the orthogonal (1 × 1) reconstruction, induced by the self-intercalation of Ti atoms into interlayer octahedral sites of the host TiSe2 at elevated temperature. Formation dynamics of the reconstructed edge/surface are captured at the atomic level by in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and further validated by density functional theory (DFT), which enables the proposal of the nucleation mechanism and two growth routes (zigzag and armchair). Via STEM-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS), a chemical shift of 0.6 eV in Ti L3,2 is observed in the reconstructed edge/surface, which is attributed to the change of the coordination number and lattice distortion. The present work provides insights to tailor the atomic/electronic structures and properties of 2D TMDC materials.

RESUMO

The manipulation of spin-phonon coupling in both formations and explorations of magnetism in two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnetic semiconductors facilitates unprecedented prospects for spintronic devices. The interlayer engineering with spin-phonon coupling promises controllable magnetism via organic cation intercalation. Here, spectroscopic evidence reveals the intercalation effect on the intrinsic magnetic and electronic transitions in quasi-two-dimensional Cr2Ge2Te6 using tetrabutyl ammonium (TBA+) as the intercalant. The temperature evolution of Raman modes, Eg3 and Ag1, along with the magnetization measurements, unambiguously captures the enhancement of the ferromagnetic Curie temperature in the intercalated heterostructure. Moreover, the Eg4 mode highlights the increased effect of spin-phonon interaction in magnetic-order-induced lattice distortion. Combined with the first-principle calculations, we observed a substantial number of electrons transferred from TBA+ to Cr through the interface. The interplay between spin-phonon coupling and magnetic ordering in van der Waals magnets appeals for further understanding of the manipulation of magnetism in layered heterostructures.

RESUMO

The planar polarization of cells and subcellular structures is critical for embryonic development. Coordination of this polarity can provide cells a sense of direction in relation to the anterior-posterior and dorsal-ventral body axes. Fly epithelia use a core pathway comprised of transmembrane (Van Gogh/Strabismus, Frizzled, and Flamingo/Starry night) and cytoplasmic (Prickle or Spiny-legs, Dishevelled, and Diego) proteins to communicate directional information between cells and thereby promote the uniform orientation of structures such as hairs. In the zebrafish gastrula, planar polarity underlies complex cellular processes, including directed migration and intercalation, that are required to shape the embryo body. Like other vertebrates, the zebrafish genome encodes homologs of each core protein, and it is well-established that polarized gastrula cell behaviors are regulated by some of them. However, it is unknown whether a conserved six-member core protein pathway regulates planar polarity during zebrafish gastrulation. Here, we review our current understanding of core protein function as it relates to two specific examples of planar polarity, the dorsal convergence of lateral gastrula cells and the mediolateral intercalation of midline cells. We consider the hallmarks of fly planar polarity and discuss data regarding asymmetric protein localization and function, and the intercellular communication of polarity information.

RESUMO

Developing electrochemical high-energy storage systems is of crucial importance toward a green and sustainable energy supply. A promising candidate is fluoride-ion batteries (FIBs), which can deliver a much higher volumetric energy density than lithium-ion batteries. However, typical metal fluoride cathodes with conversion-type reactions cause a low-rate capability. Recently, layered perovskite oxides and oxyfluorides, such as LaSrMnO4 and Sr3Fe2O5F2, have been reported to exhibit relatively high rate performance and cycle stability compared to typical metal fluoride cathodes with conversion-type reactions, but their discharge capacities (∼118 mA h/g) are lower than those of typical cathodes used in lithium-ion batteries. Here, we show that double-layered perovskite oxyfluoride La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7-δF2 exhibits (de) intercalation of two fluoride ions to rock-salt slabs and further (de) intercalation of excess fluoride ions to the perovskite layer, leading to a reversible capacity of 200 mA h/g. The additional fluoride-ion intercalation leads to the formation of O-O bond in the structure for charge compensation (i.e., anion redox). These results highlight the layered perovskite oxyfluorides as a new class of active materials for the construction of high-performance FIBs.

RESUMO

Basement membranes (BM) are extracellular matrices assembled into complex and highly organized networks essential for organ morphogenesis and function. However, little is known about the tissue origin of BM components and their dynamics in vivo Here, we unravel the assembly and role of the BM main component, Collagen type IV (ColIV), in Drosophila ovarian stalk morphogenesis. Stalks are short strings of cells assembled through cell intercalation that link adjacent follicles and maintain ovarian integrity. We show that stalk ColIV has multiple origins and is assembled following a regulated pattern leading to a unique BM organisation. Absence of ColIV leads to follicle fusion, as observed upon ablation of stalk cells. ColIV and integrins are both required to trigger cell intercalation and maintain mechanically strong cell-cell attachment within the stalk. These results show how the dynamic assembly of a mosaic BM controls complex tissue morphogenesis and integrity.
