Raised blood pressure (BP) is the leading preventable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases that makes a major impact on early mortality and morbidity. Recognizing hypertension in the community, educating people about routine BP monitoring, and improving medication compliance are all important steps in detecting, controlling, and managing hypertension. During the course of 5 months, members of the Indian Society of Hypertension organized unique medical indoor and outdoor camps at 100 screening locations around India for the May Measurement Month (MMM) 2021 study. At every location, BP was measured three times, and a questionnaire was completed. Participants known to have hypertension before the study whether taking or not taking treatment were not included (not a normal pre-requisite for exclusion in MMM). The analysis included 15 045 participants in total. After calculating the average of the second and third BP measurements, 16.4% of participants were found to have hypertension based on ≥140/90 mmHg thresholds (2461 out of 15 045). 14.0% of females and 16.4% of males had hypertension. 16.4% of participants had undiagnosed hypertension and were not receiving treatment. The MMM screening campaign has the potential for identifying large numbers of people with undiagnosed hypertension and raising awareness of the importance of raised BP among the general public, medical professionals, policymakers, the government, and the media. Future BP screening campaigns should be larger in scope and involve follow-ups with past participants.

The May Measurement Month (MMM) screening campaign initiated by the International Society of Hypertension aimed to assess the prevalence of hypertension and associated risk factors to increase and improve population awareness of raised blood pressure (BP) and methods of prevention. The MMM is a cross-sectional survey of adults aged 18 years and over of both sexes who gave informed consent to participate in the survey and to have their BP measured. Kazakhstan participated in the campaign for the first time in 2021. Blood pressure was measured three times on a single occasion, and data on cardiovascular risk factors were collected. A total of 1763 respondents from 4 regions participated in the screening. The mean age was 41 ± 14.4 years; 31.5% of all participants were found to have hypertension, of whom 41.8% were aware, 34.0% on treatment, and only 15.8% controlled (<140/90 mmHg). Significant differences in these rates were found between age and sex groups. The screening campaign confirms low levels of awareness of hypertension and associated risk factors in the population in Kazakhstan and the need for annual screening and implementation of national hypertension control programmes.

PURPOSE: May Measurement Month (MMM) is an international screening campaign for arterial hypertension (HT) organised by the International Society of Hypertension and the World Hypertension League. It aims at raising the awareness of elevated blood pressure (BP) in the population. The goal of this analysis was to assess the results obtained in Swiss pharmacies during a 3-year campaign. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Swiss data from the MMM17 to MMM19 campaigns were extracted from the global MMM database. The analysis was conducted specifically on measures taken in pharmacies. BP and a questionnaire including demographical and clinical information were recorded for each participant. To assess BP control, ESH 2018 thresholds of <140/90 mmHg and ESH 2021 pharmacy-thresholds of <135/85 mmHg were used. RESULTS: From an initial sample of 3634 Swiss participants included during this 3-year campaign, 2567 participants (73.2%women and 26.8% men, p<.001) had their BP measured in triplicates in pharmacies. The first BP measurement was associated with 2.0 ± 4.9 mmHg effect on systolic blood pressure (SBP) (p<.001) and 0.7 ± 3.7 mmHg on diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (p<.001) compared to the mean of the second and third measurements. Based on the ESH 2018 and the ESH 2021 pharmacy thresholds, prevalence of HT (mean of second and third measurements) increased from 29.5% to 38.3%, respectively. In treated participants, 58.3% (279) had an average BP < 140/90 mmHg and 40.3% (193) had an average BP < 135/85 mmHg. CONCLUSIONS: HT screening campaigns in pharmacies recruits mainly women. It helps the detection of untreated hypertensive participants and uncontrolled treated participants. Our data suggest that the average BP should be calculated on the second and third measurements due to a significant first measure effect in pharmacies measurement. SummaryHigh blood pressure (BP) is a major global public health issue as the leading risk factor of global death.World-wide initiatives like May Measurement Month (MMM) aim to screen thousands of people each year to raise awareness of hypertension (HT).Switzerland participated in MMM 2017-2019 and screened more than 2500 participants in pharmacies.When adopting the recent proposed thresholds of HT diagnosis in pharmacies (ESH 2021 > 135/85 mmHg), HT prevalence in Switzerland is high (38.3%) with only 2/3 of treated hypertensive achieving the BP goals.Women are more likely to participate in such campaigns taking place in pharmacies.A first measurement effect (FME) was also present in pharmacies, highlighting that taking three BP measurements in pharmacies and discarding the first should be also considered in the pharmacy setting.Involving a routine pharmacy-based health care of patients would help to identify more hypertensive patients and uncontrolled treated patients, who may not have had access to BP measurement.

In 2017, Lithuania joined the global May Measurement Month (MMM) campaign which aims at raising awareness of raised blood pressure worldwide. Presented here are the data arising from the 2017, 2018, and 2019 campaigns. An opportunistic cross-sectional survey of individuals aged ≥18 years was carried out in Lithuania in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Two thousand nine hundred and nineteen participants were recruited in the MMM campaigns in response to the media engagement and interactions with the study team. The mean age of participants was 46.1 years (SD 16.3) years, 58.9% were females. Blood pressures were measured using electronic devices provided by Omron according to the MMM protocol. Of the 2919 screened participants, 1308 (44.8%) had hypertension. Of all hypertensive participants, the awareness rate, the treatment rate, and the control rates (<140/90 mmHg) were 79.5%, 41.0%, and 14.2%, respectively. Of those on antihypertensive medication, the control rate was 34.8%. The high percentage of participants with hypertension was either untreated (59.0%) or treated but uncontrolled (65.2%) suggests the usefulness of such screening programmes to improve awareness of hypertension control in Lithuania.

May Measurement Month (MMM) is aimed at raising public awareness about arterial hypertension-the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases in the population. Screening was carried out at 200 sites on a national scale. More than 500 volunteers, including doctors (80%) and medical students (20%) participated in the screening. To familiarize them with the research tools and standard blood pressure (BP) measurement method, their training was conducted by the Georgian Society of Hypertension in Tbilisi and other large cities. Social and mass media, medical societies, and other stakeholders were actively involved in the recruitment process. A total of 10 756 people were screened. The mean age of participants was 53.1 years (SD 16.1). Males-67.9%, females-32.1%. One hundred percent were White. After multiple imputation, the number of hypertensive patients was 6.037 (56.1%) and out of them 4950 were aware and 4701 (77.9%) were on medication, 1336 (22.1%) were not taking a medication. Of those taking antihypertensive medication, 38.2% had controlled BP. In spite of non-randomized selection and certain restrictions with respect to extrapolation of the results, MMM comprehensively reflects an urgent problem and major gaps in the health system. Based on the above, its importance is extremely valuable for identifying public health policy priorities.

BACKGROUND: Information regarding the knowledge on the action to be taken during stroke and good recognition of stroke symptoms is mandatory in helping to plan out educational strategies to deliver health education to the community. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of adults aged 18 and above attending a blood pressure screening program in community in conjunction with May Measurement Month 2017 in Malaysia. A structured self-administered questionnaire was given to the participants who gave verbal consent. Data analysis was done using SPSS v. 23 and multiple logistic regression was used to identify the determinants of knowledge on actions to be taken during stroke and recognition of stroke symptoms. RESULTS: Out of 4096 respondents, 82.9-92.1% of them able to recognise the common stroke symptoms. and 74.2% of the study respondents will go to hospital within 4.5 h of stroke onset. According to binomial logistic regression analyses, adults aged 45 years old and above (OR 1.39 95%CI 1.01-1.92), being Malay (OR 1.74, 95% CI 1.27-2.40), being non-smokers (OR = 2.491, 95% CI: 1.64-3.78), hypertensives (OR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.02-2.42)and diabetics (OR: 2.54, 95% CI:1.38-4.69) are determinants of right actions to be taken during stroke. Meanwhile, respondents aged 45 years old and older (OR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.39-2.03), being Malay (OR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.24-1.79), hypertensive (OR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.04-1.66) and those who had a previous history of stroke (OR = 2.25, 95% CI: 1.01-5.00) are determinants of good recognition of stroke symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: The overall knowledge of stroke in our study population was good. Older age, being Malay, non-smokers, hypertensives and diabetics are determinants of right actions to be taken during stroke. Meanwhile, older age, being Malay, hypertensive and those who had a previous history of stroke are determinants of good recognition of stroke symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular mortality globally and in Ghana. May Measurement Month (MMM) is a global awareness and screening campaign initiated by the International Society of Hypertension. METHODS: Participants were recruited by opportunist sampling in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The blood pressures of participants were measured three times and the mean of the last two readings was used for the analysis. Simple and multiple logistic regression was used to determine the predictors of hypertension. RESULTS: The MMM 2018 awareness and screening campaign enrolled 5054 participants with a mean age of 39.4 ± 14.7 years. There were 2553 (50.6%) males, 987 (20.1%) of respondents had never checked their blood pressure and 676 (13.9%) had a prior history of hypertension. The prevalence of hypertension was 37.4%. We found that 589(66.8%) of 822 respondents with high blood pressure did not have a history of hypertension. Respondents with a known history of hypertension on medication were 442 (65.9%) and 219(68.0%) of 322 respondents on medication had uncontrolled hypertension. The predictors of high blood pressure in a multiple logistic regression were increasing age (OR = 1.05 CI 1.05-1.06, p < 0.001), history of alcohol intake (OR = 1.33 CI 1.04 -1.70, p = 0.02), overweight (OR = 1.4 CI 1.14-1.76, p = 0.001) and obesity (OR = 1.32, CI 1.01-1.74, p = 0.047). CONCLUSION: There is a high prevalence of hypertension in the Ashanti region in Ghana. Most participants with hypertension were not aware and the majority of those with hypertension on medications were uncontrolled. This calls for more education and screening of hypertension to decrease cardiovascular mortality.

Introduction: Hypertension is an important public health menace globally and in sub-Saharan Africa. The prevalence of hypertension is on the rise in low- and lower-middle-income countries (LMIC) such as Ghana. This rise led to the adoption of the May Measurement Month (MMM) initiative, a global blood pressure screening campaign. We aimed to create awareness and present the findings of the 2019 MMM screening campaign in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Methods: Ghana was 1 of 92 countries that participated in this global community-based cross-sectional study in May 2019. Participants (⩾18 years) were recruited by opportunistic sampling. The blood pressures of participants were measured 3 times and the mean of the last 2 was used for the analysis. Summary statistics were used to describe the data. Simple and multiple logistic regression models were used to determine the predictors of hypertension. Results: We screened 3080 participants with a mean age of 39.8 ± 16.8 years. The prevalence of hypertension was 27.3% among participants. Two-thirds of the hypertensives were unaware of their condition and only 49.5% of participants with a history of hypertension on medication were controlled. Predictors of hypertension in a multiple logistic regression were increasing age (OR = 1.05 (CI 1.04-1.06), P < .001) and high body mass index (OR = 1.06 (1.02-1.10), P = .005). Conclusion: The MMM initiative is highly commendable and of huge public health importance in LMICs like Ghana. Population-based health programs such as the MMM initiative is encouraged to shape appropriate public health policies to reduce the prevalence of hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension (HTN) is responsible for a significant disease burden in Jamaica. We are reporting the results of the 2017 blood pressure (BP) screening campaign May Measurement Month in Jamaica that aimed to increase the awareness of HTN. METHODS: Adults, 18 years old and older, from different parishes of Jamaica were invited to participate during May to June 2017. Demographic data were collected. BP, weight, and height were measured and recorded. RESULTS: Five hundred sixty-six participants (n = 566) were enrolled, 91.6% (519) from urban areas, and 72.6% (410) were females. The average age was 53.7 (18-95) years old and body mass index was 28.2 ± 6.6 kg/m2. The prevalence of HTN was 47.3% (267/566), without gender or living areas differences (both P > 0.1). Prevalence of HTN was lower in those who self-identified as Interracial ethnicity, in comparison with Afro-Caribbean (33% vs. 48.3%; P = 0.04). About third of the hypertensive patients were not aware of the high BP (89/267; 35.6%). Between hypertensive patients, 64.4% (172/267) were receiving antihypertensive drugs. The rate of BP control was 32% of the hypertensive patients and 50% of those receiving antihypertensive medication. Significant lower BP control was observed between diabetic vs. nondiabetic patients (34.3% vs. 60%; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: We found a high prevalence of HTN in this population, especially in patients with diabetes or previous cardiovascular diseases. We report an increase in HTN awareness in Jamaica but more advances need to be performed to increase HTN treatment and control.
