RESUMO

The practice of exposing honeybees to pesticides by bee-keepers or via agricultural crops, is one of the ways in which honey becomes contaminated with pesticides. Though honey has many health advantages, however, human exposure to pesticides via consumption of honey has generated public health concerns due to their endocrine-disruptive abilities. Thus, this study evaluated human exposure to endocrine-disrupting pesticides in honey from Nigeria to establish the safety of honey consumed in Nigeria. Honey were analyzed for pesticides using a gas chromatograph combined with an electron capture detector. The concentrations of ∑20 OCPs and ∑14 OPPs in the honey ranged from 0.45-1045 ng/g and 1.13-632 ng/g respectively. The values of both individual and cumulative non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks for humans were <1 and 1 × 10-4 respectively suggesting that there are no potential health risks via the honey consumption. The source analysis showed that pesticides in these honey originated from historical and recent/fresh use.

Biomass burning (BB) is an important source of atmospheric persistent organic pollutants (POPs) across the world. However, there are few field-based regional studies regarding the POPs released from BB. Due to the current limitations of emission factors and satellites, the contribution of BB to airborne POPs is still not well understood. In this study, with the simultaneous monitoring of BB biomarkers and POPs based on polyurethane foam-based passive air sampling technique, we mapped the contribution of BB to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the Indo-China Peninsula. Spearman correlations between levoglucosan and 16 PCBs (rs = 0.264-0.767, p < 0.05) and 2 OCPs (rs = 0.250-0.328, p < 0.05) confirmed that BB may facilitate POP emissions. Source apportionment indicated that BB contributed 9.3% to the total PCB and OCP mass. The high contribution of positive matrix factorization-resolved BB to PCBs and OCPs was almost consistent with their concentration distributions in the open BB season but not completely consistent with those in the pre-monsoon and/or monsoon seasons. Their contribution distributions may reflect the use history and geographic distribution in secondary sources of POPs. The field-based contribution dataset of BB to POPs is significant in improving regional BB emission inventories and model prediction.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are intentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are resistant to environmental degradation. Previous in-vitro and in-vivo studies have shown that POPs can induce oxidative stress, which is linked to neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. However, findings in epidemiological studies are inconsistent and an evidence synthesis study is lacking to summarize the existing literature and explore research gaps. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the effects of PFAS, PCBs, OCPs, and PBDEs, on oxidative stress biomarkers in epidemiological studies. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL to identify all published studies related to POPs and oxidative stress up to December 7th, 2022. We included human observational studies reporting at least one exposure to POPs and an oxidative stress biomarker of interest. Random-effects meta-analyses on standardized regression coefficients and effect direction plots with one-tailed sign tests were used for quantitative synthesis. RESULTS: We identified 33 studies on OCPs, 35 on PCBs, 49 on PFAS, and 12 on PBDEs. Meta-analyses revealed significant positive associations of α-HCH with protein carbonyls (0.035 [0.017, 0.054]) and of 4'4-DDE with malondialdehyde (0.121 [0.056, 0.187]), as well as a significant negative association between 2'4-DDE and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (-0.042 [-0.079, -0.004]), all ß [95%CI]. Sign tests showed a significant positive association between PCBs and malondialdehyde (pone-tailed = 0.03). Additionally, we found significant negative associations of OCPs with acetylcholine esterase (pone-tailed = 0.02) and paraoxonase-1 (pone-tailed = 0.03). However, there were inconsistent associations of OCPs with superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase. CONCLUSIONS: Higher levels of OCPs were associated with increased levels of oxidative stress through increased pro-oxidant biomarkers involving protein oxidation, DNA damage, and lipid peroxidation, as well as decreased TAC. These findings have the potential to reveal the underlying mechanisms of POPs toxicity.

The extensive use of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) has resulted in the widespread contamination of different environmental matrices in Pakistan. Freshwater bodies are also prone to OCPs contamination as they receive agricultural and industrial runoff from different sources. In the present study, the data regarding OCPs' fate and distribution in freshwater resources of Pakistan was reviewed and associated risks to human and ecological health were assessed. Among all the OCPs, DDTs were more prevalent with the highest mean concentration of 2290 ng/L observed in River Ravi (Lahore and Sahiwal District). Human health risk assessment showed a higher risk to the children with high Hazard Quotient (HQ) values ranging between 4.1 × 10-9- 295 for Aldrin. The River Ravi (Lahore and Sahiwal District), the River Sutlej (Kasur & Bahawalpur District), and the River Kabul (Nowshehra District) were categorized as high-risk water bodies based on Hazard Index (HI) and Non-Cancer Risk (CRI) index values > 10. Ecological risk assessment revealed a higher risk posed to invertebrate species from DDT exposure. In summary, this review highlights the occurrence and distribution of OCPs and their associated human health and ecological risks in freshwater bodies of Pakistan and also contributes to signifying the need for proper management and regulation of banned pesticides and future research perspectives.

The widespread application of pesticides in the territories of the former USSR still exerts negative impacts on their ecological status. In this regard, dedicated programs for monitoring persistent organic pollutants (POP) in humans are implemented in several countries. Our study aimed to assess the accumulation of organic pollutants in breast milk of women residing the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (CAO). Organochlorine pesticides (OCP) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) concentrations in breast milk samples were measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The POP concentrations in the samples varied from 13 ng/g lipid weight (lw) to 620.6 ng/g lw (median 58.3 ng/g lw). An assessment of health risk to infants fed breast milk from CAO women did not show any exceedance of the estimated daily intake (EDI). The results obtained are the indirect evidence of the presence of these compounds in the environment and their negative effects on ecosystems and human health.

Although studies have suggested organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) exposure increased the risk of epithelial ovarian cancer, the mechanisms underlying its potential tumorigenic effects in the human ovary are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the impact of dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), endosulfan, and heptachlor exposure on epithelial cadherin (E-cadherin) and proinflammatory mediators in human ovary surface epithelial (HOSE) cells. We found that DDE, endosulfan, and heptachlor exposure resulted in epithelial differentiation accompanied by upregulation of E-cadherin expression and overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines (TNFα, IL-1ß, and IL-6) in HOSE cells. The epithelial differentiation may accelerate HOSE cells to inclusion body formation, a common site for ovarian cancer initiation and persistent exposure to OCPs creates a chronic inflammatory microenvironment that may promote the neoplastic transformation of HOSE cells within the inclusion cyst.

Recent studies have indicated that coral mucus plays an important role in the bioaccumulation of a few organic pollutants by corals, but no relevant studies have been conducted on organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Previous studies have also indicated that OCPs widely occur in a few coral reef ecosystems and have a negative effect on coral health. Therefore, this study focused on the occurrence and bioaccumulation of a few OCPs, such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and p,p'-methoxychlor (MXC), in the coral tissues and mucus as well as in plankton and seawater from a coastal reef ecosystem (Weizhou Island) in the South China Sea. The results indicated that DDTs were the predominant OCPs in seawater and marine biota. Higher concentrations of OCPs in plankton may contribute to the enrichment of OCPs by corals. The significantly higher total OCP concentration (∑8OCPs) found in coral mucus than in coral tissues suggested that coral mucus played an essential role in resisting enrichment of OCPs by coral tissues. This study explored the different functions of coral tissues and mucus in OCP enrichment and biodegradation for the first time, highlighting the need for OCP toxicity experiments from both tissue and mucus perspectives.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants widely used all over the world. These chlorinated hydrocarbons are toxic and often cause detrimental health effects because of their long shelf life and bioaccumulation in the adipose tissues of primates. OCP exposure to humans occurs through skin, inhalation and contaminated foods including milk and dairy products, whereas developing fetus and neonates are exposed through placental transfer and lactation, respectively. In 1960s, OCPs were banned in most developed countries, but because they are cheap and easily available, they are still widely used in most third world countries. The overuse or misuse of OCPs has been rising continuously which pose threats to environmental and human health. This review reports the comparative occurrence of OCPs in human and bovine milk samples around the globe and portrays the negative impacts encountered through the long history of OCP use.

This study was carried out to evaluate organochlorinated pesticide (OCPs) concentrations in the water column and sediments of Iznik Lake. Water samples and sediment were collected in different regions (six sampling sites) of the lake between January and December 2019 and tested for OCPs by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results revealed that OCP residues throughout the sites varied depending on the anthropogenic activities of the region. OCPs detected in surface waters ranged from 0.01 to 60.80 µg/L and sediments from 0.06 to 14.21 ng/g dw. Endrin ketone, endrin aldehyde, endosulfan II, endrin, heptachlor epoxy, beta-BHC, gamma-BHC, ppDDD, and ppDDT concentrations exceeded the maximum residue limits indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO) for surface waters. Of the 18 analyzed OCP components, 17 were detected in sediment samples, and it was noted that they reached the highest concentration in summer. The presence of relatively high OCP levels according to WHO regulations in the waters of Iznik Lake, around which agricultural activities have been increasing rapidly in recent years, is a serious concern, and therefore, appropriate actions should be taken into consideration by the regulatory authorities.

The Akkar plain is the second largest agricultural area in Lebanon. This region produces huge amount of regular crops such as maize, fruits, and vegetables. In order to protect the crops, farmers use large quantities of many pesticides (including authorized and prohibited molecules) without respecting the recommended doses. In this work, we wanted to study the evolution of OCP and OPP residues at 3-year intervals in water wells in the Akkar region. Twenty OCPs and 8 OPPs were monitored in eight wells in different villages in the plain and mountains of Akkar. Solid phase extraction (SPE) method was used for pesticide extraction, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The results revealed an increasing concentration of OCPs and OPPs in groundwater over the last 3 years (between 2017 and 2019-2020). This increase in contamination is due to the uncontrolled and still unregulated (by the authorities) use of pesticides, and also to the introduction of new crops. The concentrations found in groundwater confirm that some banned pesticides are still widely used. The calculation of the theoretical pesticide intake suggests that pesticide concentrations in Akkar represent a greater health risk for the population consuming well water during the rainy season.

The present study was aimed to apply physiological and histological biomarkers of pelagic and benthic fish species as biomonitoring of environmental pollutants. Capoeta baliki and Squalius pursakensis were caught from 5 stations in Kirmir Stream (Turkey). After measuring the total length and weight for condition factor analysis, liver, gill, brain, and kidney tissues of fish were taken for histopathological analysis. Dorsal muscles of fish tissues were analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The mean condition factor of C. baliki and S. pursakensis were 1.14 and 0.97, respectively. It was indicated that the first one was in good condition than the latter one. According to histopathological observations, the alterations in the tissues may be associated with the environmental pollutants' exposure. The total concentration of PAHs of dorsal muscle of C. baliki and S. pursakensis found ranged from 0.915 to 108.421 µg/kg and 0.601 to 675.248 µg/kg, respectively. The highest total concentrations of OCPs were found as 44.16 µg/kg for C. baliki and as 562.12 µg/kg for S. pursakensis. The PCB 28 (10.83 µg/kg), PCB 52 (10.92 µg/kg), PCB 138 (226.24 µg/kg), and the total concentrations of PBDEs were found as 151.74 µg/kg in only S. pursakensis. The result of the concentrations of the investigated pollutants was generally found higher in S. pursakensis which is a higher trophic level than C. baliki. Histopathological alterations were detected as hyperemia in liver, gill, and brain; as hydrophobic degeneration in liver; hyperplasia in gill; and tubular degeneration in kidney tissues of both species. The obtained result of the study shows that the environmental pollutants may affect the physiological and histological status of fish.

As a result of its unique location, Turkey receives air masses from Europe, Russia, Middle East, and Africa, making it an important place in terms of long-range atmospheric transport (LRT) of contaminants. Atmospheric levels of 22 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), 45 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and 14 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured in two metropolitan cities, Istanbul and Izmir, on a weekly basis from May 2014 to May 2015. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its derivatives were dominant OCP species, followed by isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) at both sites. The annual mean concentration of ∑DDX (sum of o,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDT, o,p'-DDD, p,p'-DDD, o,p'-DDE, and p,p'-DDE) was 82 pg/m3 for Istanbul and 89 pg/m3 for Izmir, while these levels were about 46 pg/m3 for ∑HCHs (sum of α-, ß-, γ-, and δ-HCH) at both of the sites. At both stations, tri- and tetra-PCBs and tetra- and penta-PBDEs were dominant congeners. The temperature dependence indicates that both LRT and local contaminated areas contribute to the elevated levels. A Lagrangian particle dispersion model (FLEXPART) showed a few potential source regions in northern Africa and Middle East, southern-southwestern and eastern Europe including Russia, as well as from local domestic metropolitan areas.

Accurate values of physicochemical properties are essential for screening semivolatile organic compounds for human and environmental hazard and risk. In silico approaches for estimation are widely used, but the accuracy of these and measured values can be difficult to ascertain. Final adjusted values (FAVs) harmonize literature-reported measurements to ensure consistency and minimize uncertainty. We propose a workflow, including a novel Bayesian approach, for estimating FAVs that combines measurements using direct and indirect methods and in silico values. The workflow was applied to 74 compounds across nine classes to generate recommended FAVs (FAVRs). Estimates generated by in silico methods (OPERA, COSMOtherm, EPI Suite, SPARC, and polyparameter linear free energy relationships (pp-LFER) models) differed by orders of magnitude for some properties and compounds and performed systematically worse for larger, more polar compounds. COSMOtherm and OPERA generally performed well with low bias although no single in silico method performed best across all compound classes and properties. Indirect measurement methods produced highly accurate and precise estimates compared with direct measurement methods. Our Bayesian method harmonized measured and in silico estimated physicochemical properties without introducing observable biases. We thus recommend use of the FAVRs presented here and that the proposed Bayesian workflow be used to generate FAVRs for SVOCs beyond those in this study.

Persistent organic pollutant (POPs) contamination was analyzed in samples collected from wild and captive giant pandas to characterize seasonal variation in concentrations of POPs and possible sources. POP concentrations in bamboo and fecal samples collected from captive pandas showed significant fluctuations compared with those collected from wild pandas in each season. The highest polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and organochlorine pesticide (OCP) concentrations were 1380 pg g-1 dw and 3140 pg g-1 dw, respectively, which were observed in captive bamboo samples in the summer. PCBs varied seasonally, whereas OCPs did not show apparent seasonal variation. Based on the seasonal variability, component analysis, and the positive matrix factorization results, we determined that the secondary volatilization of POPs during periods of high temperatures was the leading cause of the exposure of pandas to pollutants (45%), and atmospheric transport played a crucial role in the secondary distribution of pollutants in panda food. The other two sources of pollution were historical residues transmitted over long distances to protected areas (28%), as well as UP-POPs and new inputs from agricultural activities (27%). The concentrations of pollutants in bamboo shoots were significantly lower than those in bamboo. Therefore, bamboo shoots should be incorporated into the diet of captive pandas in the spring to reduce their exposure to pollutants. The absorption capacity of pollutants associated with the consumption of bamboo shoots was significantly lower than that associated with the consumption of bamboo. The diet of young captive pandas in the summer should also be managed with caution given their slightly stronger ability to absorb pollutants.

Exposure to organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) can cause adverse health effects in the female population. We investigated the dietary OCP intake of childbearing-age women living in large agricultural areas of Northern China, as well as their associated health risks. Ten childbearing-age women were recruited during 2015-2016. Their weekly dietary intake diaries and food samples were collected over the course of five visits. The OCP residues of 322 food samples from seven categories (i.e., cereal, vegetable, fruit, fish, meat, egg, and milk) were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The average concentrations of the total hexachlorocyclohexanes (ΣHCH), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes and their metabolites (ΣDDX), endosulfans (ΣES), and dieldrin and endrin (ΣDrin) in all food categories were, overall, much lower than the maximum residue limits. Relative high mean residues of ΣDrin and ΣES were found in fruits (ΣDrin: 0.687 ng g-1 wet weight (w.w.), ΣES: 2.24 ng g-1 w.w.) and vegetables (ΣDrin: 0.690 ng g-1 w.w., ΣES: 2.11 ng g-1 w.w.). The estimated daily dietary intake (EDI) of these compounds was calculated, with mean levels of 10.6 (ΣES) > 4.37 (ΣDrin) > 1.51 (ΣHCH) > 0.850 (ΣDDX) ng kg-1 day-1. Women during the heating period (from January to March) tended to ingest more ΣHCH, ΣDDX, ΣDrin, and ΣES. Overall, women had no obvious non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks due to intake of OCPs, but 83.9% of them has potential carcinogenic risk, with estimated life carcinogenic risk (LCR) exceeding 10-6. Furthermore, women had a higher potential carcinogenic risk during the heating period (mean LCR: 1.33 × 10-5) than during the non-heating period (mean LCR: 8.50 × 10-6). ΣDrin was the dominant OCP responsible for health risks, followed by ΣHCH. We concluded that women in North China still have some dietary OCP intake, especially during the heating period.

The distribution of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in eutrophic ecosystems has been widely studied, but how phytoplankton blooms affect their occurrence and benthic bioaccumulation is poorly understood. To fill this knowledge gap, the biological pump effects of phytoplankton on the fate of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments and benthos (Corbicula fluminea) from Lake Taihu, a hypereutrophic lake in China, were identified. The spatial-temporal distribution of HOCs suggests that higher phytoplankton biomass, coupled with sediment organic matter (SOM) content, greatly increased the concentration of HOCs in sediments in both winter and summer seasons. This could be attributed to the biological pump effects sequestering more HOCs from water to sediments with settling phytoplankton, especially during the summer. The biological pump effects further promoted the uptake of sediment-bound HOCs by benthos. The significant positive relationships between concentrations of HOCs in sediments and benthos were observed during the winter dormancy phase of benthos. Furthermore, the benthic bioaccumulation of HOCs could be strengthened by phytoplankton, due to their contribution to SOM and the following increased bioavailability of HOCs in sediments. Further research is needed to elucidate the phytoplankton biological pump effects on the fate of HOCs in benthic food chain, especially for hypereutrophic waters.

The long-term health of many South African estuaries is impacted by pollutants entering these systems through industrial and agricultural runoff, sewage outfalls, contaminated storm water drainage, flows from informal settlements, and plastic materials in marine debris. Uncontrolled inputs combined with poor environmental management often result in elevated levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in affected estuaries. Data on POPs research from 1960 to 2020 were analysed in terms of their sources, environmental investigations, and health implications. The outcome showed polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl sulphonates (PFASs) to exceed the US EPA health advisory levels for drinking water. Concentration of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in water were below the WHO limits, while those in fish tissues from most estuaries were found to be below the US FDA limits. Although environmental compartments in some estuaries (e.g. Rooiels and uMngeni estuaries) seem to be less contaminated relative to other marine systems around the world, many others were polluted and critically modified (e.g. Durban Bay, Swartkops, Sundays, and Buffalo systems). Due to inconsistent monitoring methods coupled with limited data availability, temporal trends were unclear. Of the 290 estuaries in South Africa, 65 were prioritised and recommended for POPs evaluation based on their pollution sources, and a monitoring strategy was defined in terms of sampling. Government policies to curb marine pollution need to be enforced to prevent chronic contamination that leads to water quality deterioration and loss of ecosystem services.

Organochlorine pesticides constitute the majority of the total environmental pollutants, and a wide range of compounds have been found to be carcinogenic to humans. Among all, growing interest has been focused on ß-hexachlorocyclohexane (ß-HCH), virtually the most hazardous and, at the same time, the most poorly investigated member of the hexachlorocyclohexane family. Considering the multifaceted biochemical activities of ß-HCH, already established in our previous studies, the aim of this work is to assess whether ß-HCH could also trigger cellular malignant transformation toward cancer development. For this purpose, experiments were performed on the human normal bronchial epithelium cell line BEAS-2B exposed to 10 µM ß-HCH. The obtained results strongly support the carcinogenic potential of ß-HCH, which is achieved through both non-genotoxic (activation of oncogenic signaling pathways and proliferative activity) and indirect genotoxic (ROS production and DNA damage) mechanisms that significantly affect cellular macroscopic characteristics and functions such as cell morphology, cell cycle profile, and apoptosis. Taking all these elements into account, the presented study provides important elements to further characterize ß-HCH, which appears to be a full-fledged carcinogenic agent.

OBJECTIVES: To report a case associating the use of Oleoresin Capsicum Pepper Spray (OCPS) during law enforcement training with development of Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome (RCVS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: RCVS is radiographically characterized by multifocal smooth narrowing of cerebral arteries heralded by clinical manifestations of recurrent thunderclap headaches. 70% of cases with RCVS have a clear precipitating factor and agents commonly implicated were cannabis, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, nasal decongestants, cocaine, postpartum state, eclampsia and strenuous physical/sexual activity.1 RESULTS: 24-year-old female police officer with no past medical history who presented with thunderclap headaches after exposure to pepper spray to her face during work training. Neurological examination was unremarkable. CT angiogram (CTA) of the head and neck and subsequent conventional angiogram revealed multifocal mild arterial narrowing of bilateral middle cerebral arteries (MCA), bilateral posterior cerebral arteries (PCA) and left anterior cerebral artery (ACA) concerning for RCVS. Eight weeks later, she had a repeat MRA head and neck demonstrating complete resolution of the previously noted narrowing of her cerebral arteries. CONCLUSIONS: OCPS is widely used in law enforcement training as well as by general population as a self- defense tool. It is generally assumed to be safe, although the consequences of its use can never be predicted with certainty.2 As our case highlights, use of OCPS may be associated with development of RCVS and awareness needs to be raised regarding this rare but serious complication.

Following up-to-date initiatives of the Stockholm Convention, its global monitoring plan, and the International Cooperative Programme on Natural Vegetation and Crops (ICP Vegetation 2015) under the convention on long-range transboundary air pollution, this study examined 17 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and seven organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the moss Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. and topsoil sampled across Serbia. In the topsoil, OCPs ranged from 0.0158 to 9.6804 ng g-1 while concentrations of individual PCB congeners were in the range between 0.0185 and 0.3107 ng g-1. The levels of OCPs and PCBs in the moss H. cupressiforme ranged from 2.7785 to 23.9501 ng g-1, and from 0.4325 to 15.8013 ng g-1, respectively. POP relationships between topsoil and moss investigated by fugacity model equations indicated that the moss POP enrichment was a result of atmospheric long-range transport rather than secondary reemissions from soil.
