RESUMO

Polyhalogenated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PXDD/Fs) are commonly released into the environment as byproducts of combustion processes, accompanied by flue gases. Chlorinated (Cl) and brominated (Br) precursors play crucial roles in forming PXDD/Fs. However, the specific contributions of Cl-precursors and Br-precursors to PXDD/Fs formation have not been fully elucidated. Herein, we demonstrate that the formation of Br-precursors can increase the fraction of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) congeners substituted at specific positions, such as 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD, OCDD, 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF, and 2,3,4,6,7,8-HxCDF. This is attributed to the electrophilic chlorination reaction of the Br-precursors, which includes the Br-to-Cl transformation pathway, following the principle of regioselectivity. The observed formation of polybrominated/chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/benzofurans (PBCDD/Fs) from 1,2-dibromobenzene (1,2-DiBBz) as a Br precursor provides direct evidence supporting the proposed Br-to-Cl transformation. Quantum chemical calculations are employed to discuss the principle of regioselectivity in the Br-to-Cl transformation, clarifying the priority of the position for electrophilic chlorination. Additionally, the concentration of PCDD/Fs formed from 1,2-DiBBz is 1.6 µg/kg, comparable to that of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) (2.4 µg/kg), highlighting the potential of brominated organic pollutants as precursors for PCDD/Fs formation. This study provides three potential pathways for PCDD/Fs formation from Br-precursors, establishing a theoretical foundation for elucidating the formation mechanism of PXDD/Fs in the coexistence of Cl and Br.

The Yangtze River Delta (YRD), one of the most economically developed and industrialized regions in China, is confronted with challenges arising from rapid urbanization, particularly environmental pollution. The collection of surface water and sediment samples from forty-nine sites in the YRD was conducted to analyze 2378-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) congeners. The detected concentrations of PCDD/Fs were 0-5.3 pg TEQ/L in water and 0.12-1493 pg TEQ/g dw in sediment. The PCDD/Fs contamination in the sediment was widespread in the YRD. There were variations in the congener characteristics of PCDD/Fs in surface water and sediment. The proportion of OCDD was significantly lower in surface water samples compared to sediment, while the less chlorine-substituted homologs were found in larger proportions. To understand the partitioning and behavior of dioxins within the water-sediment system, we calculated the organic carbon normalized partition coefficients and fugacity fraction (ff) of PCDD/F congeners. The results revealed that the PCDD/Fs had not attained a state of distributional equilibrium, and the non-specific hydrophobic effect seemed minimally influential on their partitioning between sediment and water. The average ff values, which varied between 0.06 and 0.63, indicated differing migration directions for the PCDD/F congeners. Source identification analysis provided evidence that the dioxins in the river water were primarily attributed to industrial thermal processes. Iron and steel smelting, along with pesticide production and use, were likely responsible for the sediment contamination. This comprehensive analysis underscores the complex nature of PCDD/Fs pollution in the YRD and highlights the necessity for targeted environmental management strategies.

PCDD/Fs are dioxins produced by waste incineration and pose risks to human health. We aimed to detail the health risks of airborne and soil PCDD/Fs near a municipal solid-waste incinerator (MSWI) for the surrounding population and develop a new model that improves upon existing methods. Thus, we conducted field sampling and then investigated a MSWI in the Pearl River Delta (2016-2018). Our results showed that the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk values of PCDD/Fs exposed to residents in nearby areas were acceptable, with hazard index (HI) values lower than 1.0 and a total carcinogenic risk lower than 1.0E-6. Notably, the results raised concerns regarding higher non-carcinogenic risks in children than in adults. Comparative analysis of the frequency accumulation diagram, accumulated probability risk, and the absolute value of error (δ) between the 95% confidence interval (CI) and the 90% CI of the Monte Carlo stochastic simulation-triangular fuzzy number (MCSS-TFN) and the MCSS model, respectively, demonstrated that the MCSS-TFN exhibited less uncertainty than the MCSS model, regardless of the health risk value of PCDD/Fs in ambient air or in soil. This observation underscores the superiority of the MCSS-TFN model over other models in assessing the health risks associated with PCDD/Fs in situations with limited data. Our new method overcomes the limited dataset size and high uncertainty in assessing the health risks of dioxin substances, providing a more comprehensive understanding of their associated health risks than MCSS models.

The Vaal River catchment drains the largest and most populated industrial and mining region in Southern Africa. Heron, ibis, cormorant, egrets, and darter eggs, representing three habitats and four feeding guilds, were collected at four locations in 2009/10 to identify hotspots and hazards associated with persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The POPs included 21 organochlorine pesticides, five polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) classes, 18 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs including six non-dioxin-like PCBs; NDL-PCB), and 12 dioxin-like PCBs (DL-PCBs), 17 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzo-p-furans (PCDD/Fs), and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Aquatic predators had higher PFOS and PCDD/F concentrations, while PCBs dominated in terrestrial eggs. Organochlorine pesticides, PBDEs, and PCBs were strongly associated with eggs from the industrial regions, while PCDD/F concentrations were evenly distributed. PCDD/F and PCB toxic equivalency quotient concentrations were low with no adverse effects expected. PFOS peaked at Bloemhof Dam with a maximum of 2300 ng/g wm in an African Darter egg, indicating an unexpected PFOS hotspot, the source of which is unknown. Despite order of differences in compound class concentrations, there was no association with egg size. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only study that analysed all 2010 POPs in bird eggs on a large geographic scale. This study highlighted the importance of multi-species studies sampling from multiple locations to assess the risk that POPs pose to avian populations as hotspots and species at risk may be missed by studies looking at one or few species.

Despite incineration is an important emission source of toxic pollutants, such as heavy metals and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), it is still one of the most widely used methods for the management of municipal solid waste. The current paper summarizes the results of a 20-year follow-up study of the emissions of PCDD/Fs by a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) in Sant Adrià de Besòs (Catalonia, Spain). Samples of ambient air, soils and herbage were periodically collected near the facility and the content of PCDD/Fs was analyzed. In the last (2017) survey, mean levels in soil were 3.60 ng WHO-TEQ/kg (range: 0.40-10.6), being considerably higher than the mean concentrations of PCDD/Fs in soil samples collected near other MSWIs in Catalonia. Moreover, air PCDD/F concentrations were even higher than those found in a previous (2014) survey, as they increased from 0.026 to 0.044 pg WHO-TEQ/m3. Ultimately, the PCDD/F exposure would be associated to a cancer risk (2.5 × 10-6) for the population living in the surrounding area. Globally, this information indicates that the MSWI of Sant Adrià de Besòs could have had a negative impact on the environment and potentially on public health, being an example of a possible inappropriate management for years. The application of Best Available Techniques to minimize the emission of PCDD/Fs and other chemicals is critical.

Dioxins, such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), are among the most toxic unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants, and their emission is of great concern. Herein, we discovered abundant dioxin formation in soil and various organic carbon-containing matrices after digestion with aqua regia. Σ17PCDD/Fs concentrations were in the range of 66.6-142,834 pg/g dw (5.6-17,021 pg WHO2005-TEQ/g dw) in 19 soil samples after digestion with aqua regia for 6 h. Σ17PCDD/Fs concentration was significantly and positively correlated with soil organic carbon content (R2 = 0.89; p < 0.01). Compared with cellulose and lignin, humic acid served as an important organic matter component that was converted to PCDD/Fs during soil digestion. Strong oxidation and production of reactive chlorine by aqua regia may be the key factors in the formation of PCDD/Fs. The yearly emission of PCDD/Fs due to digestion with strong acids by the inspection and testing industry was estimated to be 83.8 g TEQ in China in 2021 based on the highest level, which was ∼0.9% of the total dioxin inventory in China. Great attention should be paid to unexpected dioxin formation during digestion processes considering the potential risk of release from laboratories and enterprises.

Chlorinated organic chemicals are produced and used extensively worldwide, and their risks to the biology and environment are of increasing concern. However, chlorinated byproducts [e.g., polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs)] formed during the commercial manufacturing processes and present in organochlorine products are rarely reported. The knowledge on the occurrences and fate of unintentional persistent organic chemicals in the manufacturing of organochlorine chemical is necessary for accurate assessment of the risks of commercial chemicals and their production. Here, PCDD/Fs were tracked throughout chlorobenzene and chloroethylene production processes (from raw materials to final products) by target analysis. Other byproducts that can further transform into PCDD/Fs were also identified by performing non-target screening. As a result, the PCDD/F concentrations were mostly the highest in bottom residues, and the octachlorinated congeners were dominant. Alkali/water washing stages may cause the formation of oxygen-containing byproducts including PCDD/Fs and acyl-containing compounds, so more attention should be paid to these stages. PCDD/Fs were of 0.17 and 0.21-1.2 ng/mL in monochlorobenzene and chloroethylene products, respectively. Annual PCDD/F emissions (17 g toxic equivalent in 2018) during chlorobenzene and chloroethylene production were estimated using PCDD/F emission factors. The results can contribute to the improvement of PCDD/F inventories for the analyzed commercial chemicals.

INTRODUCTION: The principal source of exposure to Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furans (PCDD/Fs) in humans comes from food intake. PCDD/Fs, are a family of potential endocrine disruptors and have been associated with different chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. However, studies assessing the relationship between dietary exposure to PCDD/Fs and adiposity or obesity status in a middle-aged population are limited. OBJECTIVE: To assess cross-sectionally and longitudinally the associations between estimated dietary intake (DI) of PCDD/Fs and body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and the prevalence/incidence of obesity and abdominal obesity in a middle-aged population. METHODS: In 5899 participants aged 55-75 years (48% women) living with overweight/obesity from the PREDIMED-plus cohort, PCDD/Fs DI was estimated using a 143-item validated food-frequency questionnaire, and the levels of food PCDD/F expressed as Toxic Equivalents (TEQ). Consequently, cross-sectional and prospective associations between baseline PCDD/Fs DI (in pgTEQ/week) and adiposity or obesity status were assessed at baseline and after 1-year follow-up using multivariable cox, logistic or linear regression models. RESULTS: Compared to participants in the first PCDD/F DI tertile, those in the highest tertile presented a higher BMI (ß-coefficient [confidence interval]) (0.43kg/m2 [0.22; 0.64]; P-trend <0.001), a higher waist circumference (1.11 cm [0.55; 1.66]; P-trend <0.001), and a higher prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity (1.05 [1.01; 1.09] and 1.02 [1.00; 1.03]; P-trend = 0.09 and 0.027, respectively). In the prospective analysis, participants in the top PCDD/F DI baseline tertile showed an increase in waist circumference compared with those in the first tertile after 1-year of follow-up (ß-coefficient 0.37 cm [0.06; 0.70]; P-trend = 0.015). CONCLUSION: Higher DI of PCDD/Fs was positively associated with adiposity parameters and obesity status at baseline and with changes in waist circumference after 1-year of follow-up in subjects living with overweight/obesity. Further large prospective studies using a different population with longer follow-up periods are warranted in the future to strengthen our results.

The Ya-Er Lake is a seriously polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzo-furans (PCDD/Fs) and mercury (Hg)-contaminated lake by pesticide and chlor-alkali plants in China. The oxidation pond method has been conducted to control pollution, moreover, the contaminated sediment was dredged and stacked, becoming a sediment stack yard for vegetable cultivation. To assess effects of oxidation pond method and dredging programme on pollution management and long-term risks of PCDD/Fs and Hg, the concentrations of PCDD/Fs, total Hg (THg), and methylmercury (MeHg) in soil and vegetable sampled from the sediment stack yard were measured and analyzed. Significantly positive relationships between concentrations of PCDD/Fs (p < 0.01), THg, and MeHg (p < 0.05) in edible parts of vegetable and soil were found, suggesting that bioaccumulation from contaminated soil derived from sediment dredging is important sources of PCDD/Fs and Hg in vegetable. Much higher PCDD/Fs (12 ± 9 pg/g dw) and Hg (THg, 0.14 ± 0.23 µg/g dw; MeHg,12.63 ± 13.31 ng/g dw) levels in vegetable were found compared with those from other contaminated regions, indicative of serious PCDD/Fs and Hg pollution in vegetable harvested from contaminated soil. Finally, the calculated provisional tolerable daily intake (PTDI) values showed higher health risk of PCDD/Fs and Hg exposure to local residents through consumption of purple and white flowering stalk, and oilseed rape. Our study established a good model to evaluate the long-term risks of PCDD/Fs and Hg. Moreover, the results indicate that the oxidation pond method and dredging programme were not effective to remove PCDD/Fs and Hg in sediment, which shed new light on management strategy of PCDD/Fs and Hg pollution in contaminated regions.

Incineration technology has been widely adopted to safely dispose of hazardous waste (HW). While the incineration process causes the formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). Due to its extreme toxicity, many scholars have been committed to determining the PCDD/F formation process and reducing emissions in incinerators. Previous studies ignored the impact of incineration and fluctuation of feeding materials on PCDD/F formation in hazardous waste incinerators (HWIs). In this study, differences in PCDD/F formation between HWIs and municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) were pointed out. The incineration section in HWIs should be carefully considered. Laboratory experiments, conventional analysis and thermogravimetry experiments were conducted. An obvious disparity of PCDD/F formation between 12 kinds of HWs was found. Distillation residue was found with remarkably higher PCDD/F concentrations (11.57 ng/g). Except for the Cl content, aromatic rings and C-O bond organics were also found with high correlation coefficients with PCDD/F concentrations (>0.92). And PCDD/Fs were formed through a chlorination process and structure formation process. All of these are helpful to further understand the PCDD/F formation process during HW incineration, optimize the operation conditions in HWIs and reduce the emission pressure of PCDD/Fs in the future.

Results of a two-dimensional gas chromatograph time of flight mass spectroscopy (GCXGC-TOFMS) determination of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) in sediments and catfish samples collected from the Msimbazi River are presented here. Samples were extracted using USEPA Method 1613. PCDD/Fs congeners in sediments ranged from 2.0 to 393.0 and 0.7 to 654.8 pg/g in the dry and wet seasons, respectively. 1,2,3,4,7,8,9-HepCDF was detected at the highest concentration, but all were lower than the USA action level of 1000 pg/g. Toxicity for each of the sampling points ranged from 19.7 to 36.5, with a mean concentration of 27.0 pg WHO 2005-TEQ g-1 in the dry season and 2.0 to 38.7 with a mean concentration of 20.7 pg WHO 2005-TEQ g-1 in the wet season. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that there was no significant difference between PCDD/Fs TEQ during the dry and wet seasons (p = 0.08; α = 0.05). The highest TEQ value was estimated at Jangwani in the wet season. Toxicity of PCDD/Fs in catfish collected from the Msimbazi River ranged from 9.3 to 145.2, with a mean of 61.2 pg WHO2005-TEQg-1. Tetrachlorodibenzo dioxin (2, 3, 7, and 8-TCDD) was detected in all fish samples and ranged from 3.5 to 12.7 with a mean of 8.1 pg/g. The concentration of TCDD in fish exceeded the Agency for Toxic Substance and Diseases Registry MRL, thus posing a probable high risk to people whose dietary requirements depend on fish from the Msimbazi River.

The concentrations and distributions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the whole blood and meat of eight typical edible animals (chicken, donkey, horse, cattle, rabbit, sheep, duck, and pig) were illustrated. Total concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and PCBs (on a basis of liquid volume) in animal bloods were 142-484 pg/L and 46-62 ng/L, respectively. Total concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs (on a basis of dry weight (dw) and lipid weight (lw)) in animal meat samples were 0.47-1090 pg/g dw (0.47-4513 pg/g lw) and 7.2-23 ng/g dw (10-776 ng/g lw), respectively. TEQs for both PCDD/Fs and PCBs in animal blood and meat samples were (67 ± 27) pg/L and (5.3 ± 14) pg/g dw (24 ± 56 pg/g lw), respectively. Besides, the dietary intakes of PCDD/Fs and PCBs were also estimated. Chicken and pig contributed more TEQs than other animals. Chicken contributed the most (95%) with high toxicity, followed by pig (3.4%) with high consumption. The dietary intake of chicken might pose risks to consumers who prefer to eat chicken products, who should comprehensively consider the essential nutrients and contaminants in food during dietary intake.

The particulate polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) of various sizes produced from the waste incinerators might have different toxicities, deposition characteristics, and potential health effects in the respiratory system, and their total toxicity equivalent (TEQ) concentration has been strictly regulated in recent years. There is a knowledge gap on the effects of air pollution control devices on particle size distributions (PSDs) of PCDD/Fs and their TEQ deposition. A hazardous waste thermal treatment plant equipped with an advanced scrubber, a cyclone demister, and activated carbon adsorption coupled with a baghouse filtration was investigated in this study. An 8-stage impactor was used to collect the particle distribution of PM10 and bounded PCDD/Fs from the gas stream at four sampling points located before and after each control unit. A "TEQDE" index is defined for the toxicity deposition of PM10-PCDD/F in the respiratory system. The advanced scrubbers significantly reduced the PM10-PCDD/F levels, especially for those with sizes ≥0.6 and ≤ 0.4 µm. Additionally, the cyclone also showed a better performance than the general dry gas treatment but had an efficiency drop with 1.5-4 µm particles. The PM10-PCDD/F loads in the final adsorption-filtration unit were eased and effectively removed the PM10-PCDD/Fs to sizes ≤0.5 or≥1.5 µm. The total TEQDE was 0.00052 ng WHO-TEQ Nm-3 and had a peak level of 0.000157 ng WHO-TEQ Nm-3 at 1.2 µm. PSDs were more sensitive to the PSDs of PM mass at high PM levels but strongly correlated with the PSDs of "PM10-PCDD/Fs/PM10" at low PM10 loads. Consequently, the advanced control system could effectively remove the PM10-PCDD/Fs and might extend the adsorption-filtration lifetime. However, the PM10-PCDD/Fs ≤ 0.4 µm had a higher TEQ deposition rate and should be further considered in emissions and ambient air quality evaluations.

Oil-based drilling cuttings (OBDC) produced from shale gas development is a hazardous waste that have high calorific values and should be disposed of properly. Burning bricks with OBDC is a promising co-disposal method; however, organic pollutants emitted during this process have not received sufficient attention. In this study, the composition and combustion characteristics of OBDC were determined, and the emissions of typical organic pollutants when burning bricks with the addition of OBDC were investigated; these included benzene series compounds (BTEXs), non-methane total hydrocarbons (NMHC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). The results showed that OBDC comprised large amounts of alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons, and combusted mainly in the temperature range of 145-450 °C with an ignition temperature of 145 °C. The co-processing 10% OBDC increased the concentrations of toluene, NMHC, and PAHs in the flue gases by ∼1000%, ∼500%, and 200%, respectively, compared to the control experiment; however, their emission concentrations were within the limits set by the Integrated emission standards of air pollutants of Chongqing. It is worth noting that 26.443 ng/Nm3 PCDD/Fs with a total toxicity of 0.709 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 was generated from the co-processing 10% OBDC, which was ascribed to the high content of chlorine and aromatic hydrocarbons in the OBDC-promoted PCDD/Fs formed during the burning and cooling processes. Though PCDD/Fs in flue gas exceeded the 0.5 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 limit prescribed in the Pollution control standard for hazardous wastes incineration of China, the realistic emission of PCDD/Fs is expected to meet with this emission limit after desulfurization treatment as PCDD/Fs can be absorbed by gypsum. It is recommended that a lower amount of OBDC is added to reduce PCDD/F formation at the source and to take more efficient air pollution control system in order to reach a stricter emission limit of 0.1 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 in EU and USA. Cycling flue gas may also be an effective method to reduce other organic pollutants. Under these conditions, co-processing OBDC in brick kilns can be achieved without serious environmental pollution, making it a potential method for disposal and utilization.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs), persistent organic pollutants, and emerging contaminants make sewage sludge management challenging. There is significant interest in thermal treatment technologies that can destroy these compounds. The most common thermal treatment, incineration, poses risks due to formation and/or release of hazardous substances in process emissions such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and PTEs. Smouldering has been introduced recently as a potential treatment for managing sewage sludge. Smouldering systems present several advantages over traditional incinerators; however, there are still uncertainties regarding process by-products. This key question was investigated in three laboratory-scale tests (0.08 m radius) and five oil drum-scale tests (0.3 m radius) that were evaluated for PCDD/Fs and PTEs in the mixture before and after treatment as well as in process emissions. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were also measured. These experiments represent a broad spectrum of conditions to evaluate process emissions, from robust self-sustaining to extinction of smouldering. Robust smouldering had negligible PCDD/Fs in process emissions. Weak smouldering had low levels of PCDD/Fs (emissions factor: 3.3 ± 0.3 µg TEQ/Mg dried sludge destroyed), levels less than uncontrolled emissions from commercial incinerators. Overall, smouldering acted as a sink for PCDD/Fs, as only 0-3% of the PCDD/Fs originally present in the sludge were released in the emissions, and >99% of the remainder were destroyed with <1% remaining in post-treatment ash. No evidence was found to support de novo synthesis or precursor reactions forming new PCDD/Fs. In addition, 94-100% of all the PTEs analyzed were retained in the post-smouldered material. These results indicate that only minimal emissions treatment for PTEs, PCDD/Fs, and VOCs may be necessary for future sewage sludge smouldering systems. These low emissions risks combined with its unique ability to handle high moisture content waste, indicate that smouldering has significant potential as a valuable waste management technique.

A comprehensive analysis of the effects of the temperature, reaction time, liquid-solid ratio (L/S), and initial pH on the hydrothermal degradation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) (which are both PCDD/Fs) in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is presented. Consequently, the hydrothermal degradation reaction is catalyzed using Ce-Mn catalyst under low-temperature conditions to study the effect of the catalyst on the degradation efficiency of PCDD/Fs. The experimental results show that temperature is the most critical factor for the reaction. When the hydrothermal oxidation temperature reaches 280 °C (reaction time = 120 min, original pH = 8.5, L/S = 4 mL/g), the toxicity equivalent (I-TEQ) of PCDD/Fs is only 5.4 ng TEQ/kg, and the degradation efficiency reaches 99.71%. Under these conditions, 2,3,4,7,8-P5CDF makes the highest contribution to I-TEQ degradation, reaching 37.4%. There are four main pathways for the reaction of 2,3,4,7,8-P5CDF with hydroxyl radicals. A comparison of the PCDD/F concentrations of different products shows that the addition of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% of the Ce-Mn catalyst reduces the degradation efficiency by 8.79%, 1.40%, and 0.07%, respectively, which indicates that the addition of a small quantity of Ce-Mn catalyst does not facilitate the degradation of PCDD/Fs. The addition of the catalyst significantly decreases the degradation efficiency of low-chlorinated homologs but has a relatively small effect on that of high-chlorinated homologs. Therefore, it is concluded that Ce-Mn catalysts are more likely to promote resynthesis than degradation of PCDD/Fs.

A survey of bioavailable polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), dioxin-like PCBs (dl-PCBs), and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) from ambient air, water and sediment was performed in the Hartbeespoort Dam area in South Africa, a region where data on highly toxic Stockholm Convention persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is scanty. The sampling was designed to simulate POP bioaccumulation in benthic and aquatic dwelling organisms as well as ambient air for estimation of ecological risk. The objective was to survey the spatiotemporal distribution and fate of bioavailable priority persistent organic compounds in the Hartbeespoort Dam in summer, autumn and winter seasons and to validate the utility of a comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-TOF) method for PCDD/F, PCB, and PBB analysis. The highest detection rates for bioavailable priority POPs were for PCB 77 and PCB 126 which were detected in 15 and 16 of the 22 samples, though the majority of the detections were < LOQ for PCB 77. Overall, PCB 126, PBB 10 and PBB 49 recorded the highest quantified bioavailable concentrations per site in SPMDs deployed in the Hartbeespoort Dam. The SPMDs deployed in air at the Magalies River site in winter recorded the highest toxic equivalency quotient (TEQ) of 29.77 pg TEQ SPMD-1. The highest TEQs recorded for SPMDs deployed in the sediment phase were 10.2, 3.3, and 3.2 pg TEQ SPMD-1, recorded at the Harbour site in summer, Dam wall in summer and Harbour in winter respectively. In water, SPMDs deployed at the Crocodile River site recorded the highest TEQ of 0.81 pg TEQ SPMD-1 in summer. TEQ data shows that air carries significant bioavailable dl-toxicity compared to the water phase, and sediment generally carries the highest dl-toxicity. Detection rates for bioavailable PBBs were generally very low, with < 3 detections being quantified above the LOQ for the majority of the sites. Statistical analysis of TEQs computed at all sites, using AVOVA shows that the dispersion of TEQs in the Hartbeespoort Dam is largely homogenous as the differences between the TEQs were insignificant (p > 0.05).

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like PCBs (DL-PCBs) were examined in chicken egg and soil samples collected from Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam. PCDD/F and DL-PCB levels in egg samples ranged from 5.74 to 1320 (median 350) and from 120 to 51,200 (median 1470) pg/g lipid weight (lw), respectively. Toxic equivalents to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TEQ) in egg samples ranged from 0.817 to 245 (median 10.8) pg TEQ/g lw. Higher dioxin levels were found in free-range eggs than non-free-range ones. We found significant correlation between TEQ levels in paired egg and soil samples collected from the Bien Hoa Airbase and some communities adjacent to industrial areas (Spearman's ρ = 0.671; p < 0.05), suggesting the co-occurrence of legacy and current dioxin emission sources in these areas.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), emitted during biomass combustion, are carcinogenic chemicals. The association between indoor biomass burning and PCDD/Fs inhalation exposure levels is still poorly understood. This study first reports direct measurement of personal exposure to PCDD/Fs in real-world households with wood combustion. In homes where biomass burning is used for cooking, toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) PCDD/Fs concentrations were found to be 545 ± 251 fg I-TEQ/m3 in kitchens, with levels of 4.5-, 6.9-, and 13.3-fold higher than those in living rooms (122 ± 92 fg I-TEQ/m3), bedrooms (79 ± 27 fg I-TEQ/m3), and ambient air (41 ± 15 fg I-TEQ/m3), respectively. PCDD/Fs exposure levels in populations using biomass fuels for cooking (353 ± 110 fg I-TEQ/m3) were 4.3-fold higher than those in the control groups (82 ± 32 fg I-TEQ/m3). Additionally, the average cancer risks for biomass cooking person were approximately 3.1-fold higher than those in factory workers. Overall, residents of household that use biomass fuels for cooking have the highest known risk of PCDD/Fs exposure. These results highlight that aiming to mitigate the PCDD/Fs exposure risk in the general population, the focus of dioxin emission source control measures should shift from industrial sectors to residential biomass combustion.

Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were investigated in muscle samples from common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus), eagle owls (Bubo bubo), and little owls (Athene noctua) collected in Beijing, China. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs were in the ranges of 22.7-5280, 67.5-1610, and 68.4-3180 pg/g lipid weight (lw), while levels of dioxin-like PCBs ranged from 4.91 to 1560, 8.08-294, and 28.2-3540 ng/g lw, in common kestrel, eagle owl, and little owl, respectively. The main PCDD/Fs congener was 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF, and CB-153 dominated the seven indicator PCBs. PCB levels have shown a decreasing trend in the last decade for the common kestrel, but not for little owl in Beijing, which exhibited higher levels of pollutants and toxic equivalency (TEQ) values than the other two species. Concentrations of PCDD/Fs, dioxin-like PCBs, and indicator PCBs differed between fledgling and adult raptors for certain species. Raptors in this study generally had a higher TEQ than the no-observed-effect level in the literature, indicating significant exposure risks to PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs in raptors, especially in adult little owls.
