BACKGROUND: Prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) after pediatric cardiac surgery imposes a great burden on patients in terms of morbidity, mortality as well as financial costs. Ebstein anomaly (EA) is a rare congenital heart disease, and few studies have been conducted about PMV in this condition. This study aimed to establish a simple-to-use nomogram to predict the risk of PMV for EA children. METHODS: The retrospective study included patients under 18 years who underwent corrective surgeries for EA from January 2009 to November 2021. PMV was defined as postoperative mechanical ventilation time longer than 24 hours. Through multivariable logistic regression, we identified and integrated the risk factors to develop a simple-to-use nomogram of PMV for EA children and internally validated it by bootstrapping. The calibration and discriminative ability of the nomogram were determined by calibration curve, Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS: Two hundred seventeen children were included in our study of which 44 (20.3%) were in the PMV group. After multivariable regression, we obtained five risk factors of PMV. The odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were as follows: preoperative blood oxygen saturation, 0.876(0.805,0.953); cardiothoracic ratio, 3.007(1.107,8.169); Carpentier type, 4.644(2.065,10.445); cardiopulmonary bypass time, 1.014(1.005,1.023) and postoperative central venous pressure, 1.166(1.016,1.339). We integrated the five risk factors into a nomogram to predict the risk of PMV. The area under ROC curve of nomogram was 0.805 (95% CI, 0.725,0.885) and it also provided a good discriminative information with the corresponding Hosmer-Lemeshow p values > 0.05. CONCLUSIONS: We developed a nomogram by integrating five independent risk factors. The nomogram is a practical tool to early identify children at high-risk for PMV after EA corrective surgery.

In this paper, the future prediction of predicted mean vote (PMV) index of indoor environment is studied. PMV is the evaluation index used in this paper to represent the thermal comfort of human body. According to the literature, the main environmental factors affecting PMV index are temperature, humidity, black globe temperature, wind speed, average radiation temperature, and clothing surface temperature, and there is a complex nonlinear relationship between the six variables. Due to the coupling relationship between the six parameters, the PMV formula can be simplified under specific conditions, reducing the monitoring of variables that are difficult to observe. Then, the improved grey system prediction model GM(1,1) with optimized selection dimension is used to predict the future time of PMV. Due to the irregularity, uncertainty and fluctuation of PMV values in time series, based on the original GM(1,1) time series prediction, an adaptive GM(1,1) improved model is proposed, which can continuously change with time series and enhance its prediction accuracy. By contrast, the improved GM(1,1) model can be derived from the sliding window of the adaptive model through changes in the dataset and get better model grades. It lays a foundation for the future research on the predicted index of PMV, so as to set and control the air conditioning system in advance, to meet the intelligence of modern intelligent home and humanized function of sensing human comfort.

Objective: To evaluate the thermal environment of different types of public places and the thermal comfort of employees, so as to provide scientific basis for the establishment of microclimate standards and health supervision requirements. Methods: From June 2019 to December 2021, 50 public places (178 times) of 8 categories in Wuxi were selected, including hotels, swimming pools (gymnasiums), bathing places, shopping malls (supermarkets), barber shops, beauty shops, waiting rooms (bus station) and gyms. In summer and winter, microclimate indicators such as temperature and wind speed were measured in all kinds of places, combined with the work attire and physical activity of employees in the places. Fanger thermal comfort equation and center for the built environment (CBE) thermal comfort calculation tool were used to evaluate the predicted mean vote (PMV), predicted percent dissatisfied (PPD) and standard effective temperature (SET) according to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) 55-2020. The modification effects of seasonal and temperature control conditions on thermal comfort were analyzed. The consistency of GB 37488-2019 "Hygienic Indicators and Limits in Public Places" and ASHRAE 55-2020 evaluation results on thermal environment was compared. Results: The thermal sensation of hotel, barber shop staff and the gym front-desk staff were moderate, while the thermal sensation of swimming place lifeguard, bathing place cleaning staff and gym trainer were slightly warm in summer and winter. Waiting room (bus station) cleaning and working staff, shopping mall staff felt slightly warm in summer and moderate in winter. Service staff in bathing places felt slightly warm in winter, while staff in beauty salons felt slightly cool in winter. The thermal comfort compliance of hotel cleaning staff and shopping mall staff in summer was lower than that in winter (χ(2)=7.01, 7.22, P=0.008, 0.007). The thermal comfort compliance of shopping mall staff in the condition of air conditioning off was higher than that in the condition of air conditioning on (χ(2)=7.01, P=0.008). The SET values of front-desk staff in hotels with different health supervision levels were significantly different (F=3.30, P=0.024). The PPD value and SET value of the front-desk staff, and the PPD value of cleaning staff of hotels above three stars were lower than those of hotels below three stars (P<0.05). The thermal comfort compliance of front-desk staff and cleaning staff in hotels above three stars was higher than that in hotels below three stars (χ(2)=8.33, 8.09, P=0.016, 0.018). The consistency of the two criteria was highest among waiting room (bus station) staff (100.0%, 1/1) and lowest among gym front-desk staff (0%, 0/2) and waiting room (bus station) cleaning staff (0%, 0/1) . Conclusion: There are different degrees of thermal discomfort in different seasons, under the condition of air conditioning and health supervision, and the microclimate indicators can not fully reflect the thermal comfort of human body. The health supervision of microclimate should be strengthened, the applicability of health standard limit value should be evaluated in many aspects, and the thermal comfort of occupational group should be improved.

The transition from an immature to a fully infectious mature retrovirus particle is associated with molecular switches that trigger dramatic conformational changes in the structure of the Gag proteins. A dominant maturation switch that stabilizes the immature capsid (CA) lattice is located downstream of the CA protein in many retroviral Gags. The HIV-1 Gag protein contains a stretch of 5 amino acid residues termed the "clasp motif," important for the organization of the hexameric subunits that provide stability to the overall immature HIV-1 shell. Sequence alignment of the CA C-terminal domains (CTDs) of HIV-1 and Mason-Pfizer monkey virus (M-PMV) highlighted a spacer-like domain in M-PMV that may provide a comparable function. The importance of the sequences spanning the CA-nucleocapsid (NC) cleavage has been demonstrated by mutagenesis, but the specific requirements for the clasp motif in several steps of M-PMV particle assembly and maturation have not been determined in detail. In the present study, we report an examination of the role of the clasp motif in the M-PMV life cycle. We generated a series of M-PMV Gag mutants and assayed for assembly of the recombinant proteins in vitro and for the assembly, maturation, release, genomic RNA packaging, and infectivity of the mutant viruses in vivo. The mutants revealed major defects in virion assembly and release in HEK 293T and HeLa cells and even larger defects in infectivity. Our data identify the clasp motif as a fundamental contributor to CA-CTD interactions necessary for efficient retroviral infection. IMPORTANCE The C-terminal domain of the capsid protein of many retroviruses has been shown to be critical for virion assembly and maturation, but the functions of this region of M-PMV are uncertain. We show that a short "clasp" motif in the capsid domain of the M-PMV Gag protein plays a key role in M-PMV virion assembly, genome packaging, and infectivity.

Individuals of many species fight with conspecifics to gain access to or defend critical resources essential for survival and reproduction. Such intraspecific fighting is evolutionarily selected for in a species-, sex-, and environment-dependent manner when the value of resources secured exceeds the cost of fighting. One such example is males fighting for chances to mate with females. Recent advances in new tools open up ways to dissect the detailed neural circuit mechanisms that govern intraspecific, particularly inter-male, aggression in the model organism Mus musculus (house mouse). By targeting and functional manipulating genetically defined populations of neurons and their projections, these studies reveal a core neural circuit that controls the display of reactive male-male attacks in mice, from sensory detection to decision making and action selection. Here, we summarize these critical results. We then describe various modulatory inputs that route into the core circuit to afford state-dependent and top-down modulation of inter-male attacks. While reviewing these exciting developments, we note that how the inter-male attack circuit converges or diverges with neural circuits that mediate other forms of social interactions remain not fully understood. Finally, we emphasize the importance of combining circuit, pharmacological, and genetic analysis when studying the neural control of aggression in the future.

Wearing masks to study and work places has become a daily protective measure during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the summer of 2021, environmental parameters were monitored, and students in a university library in Guangzhou, China, were surveyed to analyze the possible symptoms of wearing masks for a long time, and to assess the sensitivity of various body parts to the environmental parameters. Concurrently, the preference of subjects wearing masks for various environmental parameters was also analyzed. Additionally, the relationship between thermal sensation and thermal index was analyzed to identify acceptable and comfortable temperature ranges. The expected duration of wearing masks was counted. Subjects wearing masks had greater requirements for environmental comfort, and reported increased thermal discomfort of the face and head, compared to those without masks. More than 70% of the subjects wearing masks reported that they experienced discomfort on their faces. Among the subjects who experienced discomfort, 62.7% reported that facial fever was the main symptom; while some reported symptoms of dyspnea (25.4%) and rapid heartbeat (9.1%). More than 75% of the subjects were expected to wear masks for 2.0 h or less. Evaluation of environmental thermal sensation, including overall, facial, and head thermal sensation, differed among subjects who wore and did not wear masks. The indexes of neutral Operative temperature/Standard Effective Temperature (T op /SET*) and preferred T op /SET* were lower among subjects with masks than among those without masks. The neutral T op /SET* deviation was 0.3 °C, and the preferred T op /SET* deviation was 0.5 °C. Additionally, the acceptable and comfortable temperature zones differed between the two cases. The subjects who wore masks preferred colder temperatures. These findings indicated that the environmental parameters should be adjusted to improve the thermal comfort of the human body while wearing masks in work or study places.

Retroviral envelope glycoprotein (Env) is essential for the specific recognition of the host cell and the initial phase of infection. As reported for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the recruitment of Env into a retroviral membrane envelope is mediated through its interaction with a Gag polyprotein precursor of structural proteins. This interaction, occurring between the matrix domain (MA) of Gag and the cytoplasmic tail (CT) of the transmembrane domain of Env, takes place at the host cell plasma membrane. To determine whether the MA of Mason-Pfizer monkey virus (M-PMV) also interacts directly with the CT of Env, we mimicked the in vivo conditions in an in vitro experiment by using a CT in its physiological trimeric conformation mediated by the trimerization motif of the GCN4 yeast transcription factor. The MA protein was used at the concentration shifting the equilibrium to its trimeric form. The direct interaction between MA and CT was confirmed by a pulldown assay. Through the combination of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and protein cross-linking followed by mass spectrometry analysis, the residues involved in mutual interactions were determined. NMR has shown that the C terminus of the CT is bound to the C-terminal part of MA. In addition, protein cross-linking confirmed the close proximity of the N-terminal part of CT and the N terminus of MA, which is enabled in vivo by their location at the membrane. These results are in agreement with the previously determined orientation of MA on the membrane and support the already observed mechanisms of M-PMV virus-like particle transport and budding.IMPORTANCE By a combination of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectroscopy of cross-linked peptides, we show that in contrast to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), the C-terminal residues of the unstructured cytoplasmic tail of Mason-Pfizer monkey virus (M-PMV) Env interact with the matrix domain (MA). Based on biochemical data and molecular modeling, we propose that individual cytoplasmic tail (CT) monomers of a trimeric complex bind MA molecules belonging to different neighboring trimers, which may stabilize the MA orientation at the membrane by the formation of a membrane-bound net of interlinked Gag and CT trimers. This also corresponds with the concept that the membrane-bound MA of Gag recruits Env through interaction with the full-length CT, while CT truncation during maturation attenuates the interaction to facilitate uncoating. We propose a model suggesting different arrangements of MA-CT complexes between a D-type and C-type retroviruses with short and long CTs, respectively.

Predicted mean vote (PMV) is a prevailing thermal comfort model adopted by thermal comfort standards. To extend its ability in explaining thermal adaptations, the PMV is multiplied by an extension factor. However, the original extended PMV (ePMV) cannot account for thermal adaptations around thermal neutrality, resulting in deviation around thermal neutrality, therefore, is unable to predict thermal sensation around thermal neutrality accurately. Given the unusual importance of thermal sensation around thermal neutrality for energy-efficient provision of indoor thermal comfort, this study modifies the ePMV to reinforce thermal adaptations around thermal neutrality by adding a thermal neutrality factor. The modified ePMV is quantified by explicitly expressing the extension factor and the thermal neutrality factor as functions of field datasets of the PMV, thermal sensation vote (TSV), and ambient temperature. The modified ePMV is validated to improve thermal sensation prediction effectively (by up to 73%), particularly for prediction around thermal neutrality with the TSV between -0.5 and 0.5, by mitigating deviation around thermal neutrality for different types of buildings under various climate conditions around the world. Moreover, the modified ePMV is explicitly formulated and, therefore, convenient for practical applications.

The convective and radiative heat transfer coefficients of clothing are important parameters for human thermoregulation and comfort models. Many researchers have studied convective and radiative heat transfer coefficients of the naked human body. However, there is limited information on convective and radiative heat transfer coefficients for the clothed human body. Therefore, this study aims to confirm whether the convective and radiative heat transfer coefficients vary with different clothing ensembles in addition to clarifying how the difference in clothing heat transfer coefficients affects the prediction of thermal comfort index, such as the predicted mean vote (PMV) index. The convective and radiative heat transfer coefficients for eight sets of clothing ensembles were measured through a manikin experiment. The results demonstrated that (1) the largest difference between convective heat transfer coefficients for various clothing ensembles was 32%, and (2) PMV values differed between the clothing ensembles with the largest value being approximately 0.2, which corresponds nearly 1 °C change in the indoor temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the actual clothing convective heat transfer coefficient for the precise prediction of thermal comfort.

BACKGROUND: The main goal of presurgical orthopedics (PSO) for patients with bilateral cleft lip and palate is to correct the protruded and/or twisted premaxilla. However, PSO is associated with the risk of uncontrolled development of the vomer, which has received little attention to date. SOLUTION: We present a removable orthodontic device that can be used to keep or align the vomer and the premaxilla in the midline during preoperative molding of cleft segments independently and 3 dimensionally.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether burdens of chronic comorbid illnesses can predict the clinical course of prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV)patients in a long-term, acute-care hospital (LTACH). METHODS: Retrospective study of 866 consecutive PMV patients whose burdens of chronic comorbid illnesses were quantified using the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale (CIRS). Based on increasing CIRS scores, 6 groups were formed and compared: group A (≤25; n = 97), group B (26-28; n = 105), group C (29-31; n = 181), group D (32-34; n = 208), group E (35-37; n = 173), and group F (>37; n = 102). RESULTS: As CIRS scores increased from group A to group F, rates of weaning success, home discharges, and LTACH survival declined progressively from 74% to 17%, 48% to 0%, and 79% to 21%, respectively (all P < .001). Negative correlations between the mean score of each CIRS group and correspondent outcomes also supported patients' group allocation and an accurate prediction of their clinical course (all P < .01). Long-term survival progressively declined from a median survival time of 38.9 months in group A to 3.2 months in group F (P < .001). Compared to group A, risk of death was 75% greater in group F (P = .03). Noteworthy, PMV patients with CIRS score <25 showed greater ability to recover and a low likelihood of becoming chronically critically ill. Diagnostic accuracy of CIRS to predict likelihood of weaning success, home discharges, both LTACH and long-term survival was good (area under the curves ≥0.71; all P <.001). CONCLUSIONS: The burden of chronic comorbid illnesses was a strong prognostic indicator of the clinical course of PMV patients. Patients with lower CIRS values showed greater ability to recover and were less likely to become chronically critically ill. Thus, CIRS can be used to help guide clinicians caring for PMV patients in transfer decisions to and from postacute care setting.

Assessing the thermal comfort of the car in a hot and humid climate is crucial as it may have adverse health implications. In the current study, different models of car were used to conduct real-time monitoring of temperature and relative humidity (RH %) inside the car cabin to assess the thermal comfort of a virtual occupant. The temperature in car cabins during the monitoring period ranged between 26.7 and 64.9 °C while the range of RH was 8.3-60.4%. Data from meteorological stations were also collected to develop a scenario of thermal comfort of occupants outside the car in standing position. The PMV range as per ASHRAE 55-2017 guidelines for ambient conditions was 3.24-7.41, the car front was 8.36-11.87, and the car back was 11.5-18.04. The thermal comfort sensation was found to be hot in all instances and followed category IV of EN15251 guidelines. PMV was observed to be worst for Sedan for both front and back as per both ASHRAE 55-2015 and EN12521 guidelines. The PPD was observed to be 100% in all cases, showing dissatisfaction for all car models. The concentration of CO2 and CO ranged between 113-1127 ppm and 0-3.9 ppm, respectively, for the front of the car. The results were also compared with the threshold values of thermal comfort parameters according to ISHRAE Standard 10,001:2016 and found to be acceptable. Climate change is leading to extremes in temperature, this may impact the thermal comfort of the car occupants to a great extent due to the heating of the car cabins, which act as a closed microenvironment. Hence, the current study urges to formulate guidelines for car design based on thermal comfort and developing a sensor to indicate thermal comfort for occupants to avoid adverse health impacts in the hot climate.

In addition to specific RNA-binding zinc finger domains, the retroviral Gag polyprotein contains clusters of basic amino acid residues that are thought to support Gag-viral genomic RNA (gRNA) interactions. One of these clusters is the basic K16NK18EK20 region, located upstream of the first zinc finger of the Mason-Pfizer monkey virus (M-PMV) nucleocapsid (NC) protein. To investigate the role of this basic region in the M-PMV life cycle, we used a combination of in vivo and in vitro methods to study a series of mutants in which the overall charge of this region was more positive (RNRER), more negative (AEAEA), or neutral (AAAAA). The mutations markedly affected gRNA incorporation and the onset of reverse transcription. The introduction of a more negative charge (AEAEA) significantly reduced the incorporation of M-PMV gRNA into nascent particles. Moreover, the assembly of immature particles of the AEAEA Gag mutant was relocated from the perinuclear region to the plasma membrane. In contrast, an enhancement of the basicity of this region of M-PMV NC (RNRER) caused a substantially more efficient incorporation of gRNA, subsequently resulting in an increase in M-PMV RNRER infectivity. Nevertheless, despite the larger amount of gRNA packaged by the RNRER mutant, the onset of reverse transcription was delayed in comparison to that of the wild type. Our data clearly show the requirement for certain positively charged amino acid residues upstream of the first zinc finger for proper gRNA incorporation, assembly of immature particles, and proceeding of reverse transcription.IMPORTANCE We identified a short sequence within the Gag polyprotein that, together with the zinc finger domains and the previously identified RKK motif, contributes to the packaging of genomic RNA (gRNA) of Mason-Pfizer monkey virus (M-PMV). Importantly, in addition to gRNA incorporation, this basic region (KNKEK) at the N terminus of the nucleocapsid protein is crucial for the onset of reverse transcription. Mutations that change the positive charge of the region to a negative one significantly reduced specific gRNA packaging. The assembly of immature particles of this mutant was reoriented from the perinuclear region to the plasma membrane. On the contrary, an enhancement of the basic character of this region increased both the efficiency of gRNA packaging and the infectivity of the virus. However, the onset of reverse transcription was delayed even in this mutant. In summary, the basic region in M-PMV Gag plays a key role in the packaging of genomic RNA and, consequently, in assembly and reverse transcription.

Development of novel in silico methods for questing novel PgP inhibitors is crucial for the reversal of multi-drug resistance in cancer therapy. Here, we report machine learning based binary classification schemes to identify the PgP inhibitors from non-inhibitors using molecular solvation theory with excellent accuracy and precision. The excess chemical potential and partial molar volume in various solvents are calculated for PgP± (PgP inhibitors and non-inhibitors) compounds with the statistical-mechanical based three-dimensional reference interaction site model with the Kovalenko-Hirata closure approximation (3D-RISM-KH molecular theory of solvation). The statistical importance analysis of descriptors identified the 3D-RISM-KH based descriptors as top molecular descriptors for classification. Among the constructed classification models, the support vector machine predicted the test set of Pgp± compounds with highest accuracy and precision of ~ 97% for test set. The validation of models confirms the robustness of state-of-the-art molecular solvation theory based descriptors in identification of the Pgp± compounds.

BACKGROUND: Nanoparticles derived from plant viruses possess fascinating structures, versa-tile functions and safe properties, rendering them valuable for a variety of applications. Papaya mosaic Virus-Like Particles (VLPs) are nanoparticles that contain a repetitive number of virus capsid proteins (PMV-CP) and are considered to be promising platforms for vaccine design. Previous studies have re-ported the antigenicity of PMV nanoparticles in mammalian systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: As experiments that concern vaccine development require careful design and can be time consuming, computational experiments are of particular importance. Therefore, prior to ex-pressing PMV-CP in E. coli and producing nanoparticles, we performed an in silico analysis of the virus particles using software programs based on a series of sophisticated algorithms and modeling networks as useful tools for vaccine design. A computational study of PMV-CP in the context of the immune sys-tem reaction allowed us to clarify particle structure and other unknown features prior to their introduc-tion in vitro. RESULTS: The results illustrated that the produced nanoparticles can trigger an immune response in the absence of fusion with any foreign antigen. CONCLUSION: Based on the in silico analyses, the empty capsid protein was determined to be recognised by different B and T cells, as well as cells which carry MHC epitopes.

The present study aims to evaluate the influence of climate conditions on tourism in the port of Chabahar, southeastern Iran, using the climate comfort indices (CIT, PMV, and TCI) and the field data relative to the tourist satisfaction. According to the computed TCI, the autumn-winter season (October-April) is climatically favorable for tourism in Chabahar, but it is ideal during January to March. Based on the computed PMV index, the studied region is in the range of climate comfort in most parts of the year. However, when the PMV thermal comfort limits (- 0.5 < PMV < 0.5) and the PPD limits (0 < PPD < 10) are considered, only the March and November are included in the thermal comfort range. The CIT index also indicates that all months of the year are acceptable for tourism that does not coincide with the reality of the region. However, by blending the PMV and the tourist's degree of satisfaction, a slight modification was made to the CIT index to better represent the reality of the region regarding the climate comfort. The modified CIT gave a different result, reflecting the importance of tourists' perceptions in defining the climate comfort rather than merely relying on the climate variables. The modified CIT also suggests November-March as a period with favorable to ideal climate condition for tourism in Chabahar which is a more realistic assessment of climate condition of the region as perceived by the tourists interviewed.

Today, evaluation of thermohygrometric indoor conditions is one of the most useful tools for building design and re-design and can be used to determine energy consumption in conditioned buildings. Since the beginning of the Predicted Mean Vote index (PMV), researchers have thoroughly investigated its issues in order to reach more accurate results; however, several shortcomings have yet to be solved. Among them is the uncertainty of environmental and subjective parameters linked to the standard PMV approach of ISO 7730 that classifies the thermal environment. To this end, this paper discusses the known thermal comfort models and the measurement approaches, paying particular attention to measurement uncertainties and their influence on PMV determination. Monte Carlo analysis has been applied on a data series in a "black-box" environment, and each involved parameter has been analysed in the PMV range from -0.9 to 0.9 under different Relative Humidity conditions. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis has been performed in order to define the role of each variable. The results showed that an uncertainty propagation method could improve PMV model application, especially where it should be very accurate (-0.2 < PMV<0.2 range; winter season with Relative Humidity of 30%).

To test the hypothesis that the premotor cortex in and behind the caudal bank of the arcuate sulcus can generate saccades, we stimulated electrically the periarcuate region of alert rhesus monkeys. We were able to produce saccades from sites of the premotor cortex that were contiguous with the frontal eye fields and extended up to 2 mm behind the smooth pursuit area. However, premotor sites often elicited saccades with ipsiversive characteristic vectors, lower peak velocities, and flatter velocity profiles when compared to saccades evoked from the frontal eye field.

Platelet-derived microvesicles (pMVs) are small, heterogeneous vesicles released from platelet membranes as a result of activation. These microvesicles possess a wide range of properties, including prothrombotic, proatherogenic, proinflammatory, immunomodulatory, and even anticoagulant activity. The elevated release of these microvesicles has been observed in various metabolic, inflammatory, thrombotic, and vascular diseases, including ischemic heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, and connective tissue disease. Modulation of both pMV generation and the expression of their surface molecules may have beneficial clinical implications and could become a novel therapeutic target. However, mechanisms by which pharmacological agents can modify pMV formation are elusive. The purpose of this review is to discuss the effects of drugs routinely used in primary and secondary prevention of vascular disease on the release of pMV and expression of their surface procoagulant and proinflammatory molecules.

Whether a journey is pleasant or not usually depends on the climatic conditions which permit to perform outdoor activities. The perception of climatic conditions, determined by physiological and psychological factors, can vary according to different adaptation phenomena related to the person involved and the weather conditions of the place where they live. Studying the bioclimatology of a country characterized by a high flux of tourism, as e.g. Italy, can provide some important information about where and when is it better to visit a place. Some differences have to be specified though, like the local tourism, which is used to that type of climate, and international tourism, which is formed by people coming from countries with different types of climates. Therefore this paper examined the climatic conditions and outdoor thermal comfort through the Mediterranean Outdoor Comfort Index (MOCI) for local tourism and through the predicted mean vote (PMV) for international tourism. The cities examined were three (Venice, Rome and Palermo located in the North, Centre and South of Italy, respectively), where average information were collected every week for an entire year. Finally, a map of the entire Italian territory reporting the seasonal average values of these indexes was also reported.
