Intelligent-responsive temporary plugging agents (TPAs) have great potential in the field of oil and gas resource extraction due to their self-adaptability to the environment. However, the transport mechanism of oil and gas molecules, such as aqueous methane solution in intelligent-responsive TPA-modified nano-channels and the blocking behavior of TPA, have not been verified yet. In this work, dissipative particle dynamics simulations (DPD) are conducted to investigate the velocity distribution and the force characteristics of aqueous methane solutions under different driving velocities, as well as the blocking effect of TPA to the flow of solution. Simulation results indicate that aqueous methane solution primarily concentrates in the uncovered area of the TPA and diffuses into the TPA-covered area when the nano-channel is closed. The velocity distribution of the flowing solution in the open nano-channel follows a subparabolic pattern. Methane molecules in the closed nano-channel show sharp oscillations in velocity and force profiles, which can be mitigated by increasing the methane concentration. The designed TPA effectively blocks fluid flow but its head and tail are vulnerable to the shear forces from the fluid. This study enhances the understanding of the nanoflows in the wellbores during the extraction of oil and natural gas resources.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis and management of Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome (SCDS) with concomitant otosclerosis can be a challenge. Otosclerosis can mask SCDS symptoms and stapes surgery may reveal or exacerbate vestibular symptoms. Our aim is to present four cases of SCDS with concomitant otosclerosis and thereby informing the reader about the possibility of this dual occurrence and its implications for treatment. CASES: Four patients with SCDS and concomitant otosclerosis are presented. Two patients underwent surgical treatment for both SCDS and otosclerosis and two patients opted for conservative management. OUTCOMES: The main differences between surgically and non-surgically treated cases are the presence of autophony and pressure-induced vertigo and a more severe experience of symptoms in surgically treated cases. Surgically treated cases achieved a sizeable reduction in postoperative air-bone gap and resolution of vestibular symptoms. CONCLUSION: The subjective severity of symptoms in combination with shared decision-making is key in determining the appropriate treatment plan for SCDS and concomitant otosclerosis.

PURPOSE: Most of Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence (SSCD) are located in the apical region of the SSC. However, in a small number of cases, it may be situated in the medial wall, causing the SSC to contact with the superior petrosal sinus (SPS). The aim of this study is to describe four patients with SSCD involving the superior petrosal sinus (SSCD-SPS) and to perform a review of the literature. METHODS: Observational retrospective study of patients diagnosed of SSCD-SPS in a tertiary referral center. A systematic review was made, identifying 7 articles in the literature. Clinical presentation, complementary test (pure-tone audiometry, PTA; vestibular evoked myogenic potential, VEMP; computed tomography, CT), therapeutic management and outcomes were reported. RESULTS: Four new cases of SSCD-SPS are reported, in three of them a transmastoid plugging was performed. 54 patients with SSCD-SPS (57 dehiscences) were reported in the literature. The most frequent symptoms were aural pressure (57.41%) and vertigo provoked by pressure/Valsalva (55.55%). Conductive hearing loss was the most common finding in PTA (47.37%). Abnormally low thresholds were observed in 59.46% of reported VEMP. Transmastoid approach was used in ten cases, middle fossa approach in four, round window reinforcement in one, and occlusion of the SPS using coils in two. CONCLUSIONS: Within SSCD, we have encountered a rare subtype characterized by its medial wall location in close proximity to the SPS. This subgroup needs special consideration as it has shown its own distinct characteristics. Regarding therapeutic management, we advocate a transmastoid approach.

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes are technologies used in the oil and gas industry to maximize the extraction of residual oil from reservoirs after primary and secondary recovery methods have been carried out. The injection into the reservoir of surface-active substances capable of reducing the surface tension between oil and the rock surface should favor its extraction with significant economic repercussions. However, the most commonly used surfactants in EOR are derived from petroleum, and their use can have negative environmental impacts, such as toxicity and persistence in the environment. Biosurfactants on the other hand, are derived from renewable resources and are biodegradable, making them potentially more sustainable and environmentally friendly. The present review intends to offer an updated overview of the most significant results available in scientific literature on the potential application of biosurfactants in the context of EOR processes. Aspects such as production strategies, techniques for characterizing the mechanisms of action and the pros and cons of the application of biosurfactants as a principal method for EOR will be illustrated and discussed in detail. Optimized concepts such as the HLD in biosurfactant choice and design for EOR are also discussed. The scientific findings that are illustrated and reviewed in this paper show why general emphasis needs to be placed on the development and adoption of biosurfactants in EOR as a substantial contribution to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly oil and gas industry.

BACKGROUND: Severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA) is characterised by elevated blood/sputum eosinophil counts and airway inflammation, which can lead to mucus plug-mediated airway obstruction, increased exacerbation frequency, declines in lung function, and death. Benralizumab targets the alpha-subunit of the interleukin-5 receptor found on eosinophils, leading to rapid and near complete eosinophil depletion. This is expected to result in reduced eosinophilic inflammation, reduced mucus plugging and improved airway patency and airflow distribution. METHODS: BURAN is an interventional, single-arm, open-label, uncontrolled, prospective, multicentre study during which participants will receive three 30 mg subcutaneous doses of benralizumab at 4-week intervals. This study will use functional respiratory imaging (FRI), a novel, quantitative method of assessing patients' lung structure and function based on detailed, three-dimensional models of the airways, with direct comparison of images taken at Weeks 0 and 13. Patients aged ≥ 18 years with established SEA who may be receiving oral corticosteroids and/or other asthma controller medications, who are inadequately controlled on inhaled corticosteroid-long-acting ß2-agonist therapies and who have had ≥ 2 asthma exacerbations in the previous 12 months will be included. The objectives of BURAN are to describe changes in airway geometry and dynamics, measured by specific image-based airway volume and other FRI endpoints, following benralizumab therapy. Outcomes will be evaluated using descriptive statistics. Changes in FRI parameters, mucus plugging scores and central/peripheral ratio will be quantified as mean percent change from baseline (Week 0) to Week 13 (± 5 days) and statistical significance will be evaluated using paired t-tests. Relationships between FRI parameters/mucus plugging scores and conventional lung function measurements at baseline will be assessed with linear regression analyses for associations between outcomes, scatterplots to visualise the relationship, and correlation coefficients (Spearman's rank and Pearson's) to quantify the strength of these associations. CONCLUSIONS: The BURAN study will represent one of the first applications of FRI-a novel, non-invasive, highly sensitive method of assessing lung structure, function and health-in the field of biologic respiratory therapies. Findings from this study will increase understanding of cellular-level eosinophil depletion mechanisms and improvements in lung function and asthma control following benralizumab treatment. Intelligent polymers have become the focus of attention worldwide. Intelligent polymer materials through organic synthesis methods are used to make inanimate organic materials become "feeling" and "sentient". Intelligent polymer materials have been applied in actual engineering production, and they are becoming a new research topic for scientists in various fields and countries, especially in the areas of drilling and plugging. The development of intelligent polymer materials can provide new solutions and technical means for drilling and plugging. Unlike traditional plugging materials, intelligent polymer plugging materials can cope with environmental changes. They have the characteristics of a strong target, good plugging effect, and no damage to the reservoir. However, there are currently no reviews on intelligent polymer plugging materials in the drilling field, so this paper fills that gap by reviewing the research progress of intelligent polymer plugging materials. In addition, this paper describes the mechanism and application status of intelligent polymer shape-memory polymers, intelligent polymer gels, intelligent polymer membranes, and intelligent polymer bionic materials in drilling and plugging. It is also pointed out that some intelligent polymer plugging materials still have problems, such as insufficient toughness and a poor resistance to salt and high temperature. At the same time, some suggestions for future research directions are also presented for reference.

Matrix acidification is one of the most effective stimulations to dissolve scales and remove damage in carbonate reservoirs. However, existing acid systems are difficult to dissolve organic and inorganic scales simultaneously, and complex multi-stage alternative injection often introduces new precipitation and damages the reservoir. Here, based on the retardation ability of emulsified acid and the stable structure of microemulsion, an oil-phase solvent was preferably selected, and the surfactant and cosurfactant were optimized to prepare an acid-in-oil type microemulsion acid capable of dissolving both organic and inorganic scales and high solubilizing for hydrochloric acid. Based on the rotating disc experiment, scale dissolution experiment and acid driving experiment, the acid-rock reaction kinetics, scale dissolution ability and acidizing and plugging removal performance of microemulsion acid in a carbonate reservoir were systematically studied and compared. The results show that Solvesso 150 (aromatic solvent) has the advantages of low toxicity, high flash point and high-scale dissolving ability. At NP-4: OP-10: A (cosurfactant) = 3:3:4, the microemulsion acid system has the strongest ability to solubilize hydrochloric acid and can solve the problem of low H+ concentration. The particle size of microemulsion acid is smaller compared to emulsified acid. At 60 °C, the mass transfer coefficient of microemulsion acid is 3.2 × 10-8 cm2/s, which is one order of magnitude less than that of emulsified acid. Microemulsion acid shows good solubility performance in dissolving organic and inorganic scales, and the comprehensive solubility of mixed scales can reach 98.28%. The stronger scale solubilization ability and lower acid-rock reaction rate enable microemulsion acid to form a thin and straight main wormhole, thus enhancing the acidizing and plugging removal effect. This study can solve the problem of poor hydrochloric acid solubilization ability of microemulsion acid to a certain extent, which provides theoretical and data support for the research and development of microemulsion acid and the efficient plugging removal technology for carbonate reservoirs.

We targeted high-temperature and highly saline old oil fields, whose environmental conditions could be attributed to the significantly high heterogeneity cause by long-term water flooding. The Huabei Oilfield was chosen as the research object. We developed a hydrophobic functional monomer-polymer with temperature and salt resistance by introducing the temperature-resistant and salt-resistant monomer NVP and a hydrophobic functional monomer into the main chain for copolymerization. We used a crosslinking agent with phenolic resin to prepare a weak gel system that showed temperature and salt resistance and investigated its temperature and salt resistance, infective property, plugging performance, liquid flow ability, micropore throat migration, and plugging characteristics. The results obtained using the infrared spectroscopy technique revealed the successful preparation of the phenolic resin crosslinker. The weak gel exhibited good temperature and salt resistance when the polymer concentration was 2000 mg/L, the cohesion ratio was 1:1.5, the additive concentration was 2000 mg/L, the reservoir temperature was 120 °C, and the injected water salinity was 40,300.86 mg/L. The average viscosity retention rate of the 90-day weak gel reached more than 80% and its microstructure was examined. The coreflow experiment results revealed that the weak gel system was characterized by good infectivity. After plugging the weak gel, the effect on the direction of the liquid flow was evident and the flow rate of the low permeability layer increased to a maximum of 48.63% under conditions of varying permeability levels. A significant improvement in the water absorption profile was achieved. The plugging was carried out through a sand-filling pipe under varying permeability conditions and the pressure measuring points in the sand-filling pipe were sucessfully pressurized. The migration ability of the weak gel was good and the blocking rate was >85%.

One of the valuable fractions of paraffinic oils is the diesel fraction, which can be used as a commercial fuel. However, the high content of alkanes of normal structure (~10-40%) in the diesel fraction leads to a deterioration in the performance characteristics of the fuel and, as a result, the inability to use the diesel fraction without additional processing in the cold season at lower temperatures, which is critical for many regions with cold winters. The process of catalytic dewaxing is one of the most promising ways to improve the low-temperature characteristics of diesel fractions. This work is devoted to studying the activity of promoted Ni, Mo, and Ni-Mo catalysts based on mesoporous aluminosilicate and pre-activated bentonite in dewaxing diesel fractions. The effect of the nature and content of promoting additives on the activity of bifunctional catalysts in the process of hydroisodewaxing of diesel fraction in a flow-type reactor in the temperature range of 260-340 °C, pressure of 2 MPa and feed space velocity of 1 h-1 was studied. It is shown that the synthesized bifunctional catalysts based on mesoporous aluminosilicate and pre-activated bentonite from the Tagan field (Ni/MAS-H-bentonite, Mo/MAS-H-bentonite, and Ni-Mo/MAS-H-bentonite) have the necessary balance of Lewis and Bronsted acid centers strengths. It allows them to selectively conduct the hydroisodewaxing process. It has been established that the use of the synthesized 5% Ni-1% Mo/MAS-H-bentonite bifunctional catalyst in the diesel fractions hydroisodewaxing process under optimal process conditions makes it possible to obtain diesel fuel with low-temperature characteristics that meet the requirements for cold climate fuels: cold filter plugging point (CFPP)-minus 33 °C, flash point in a closed cup-39 °C and pour point-minus 36 °C.

PURPOSE: To determine if the Meibomian Gland (MG) secretion quality is associated with symptoms of ocular discomfort, hours of Video Display Terminals (VDT) use, eyelid margin abnormalities, conjunctival hyperemia, and Meibomian Gland Loss Area (MGLA) in a sample of university students. METHODS: An online survey that included an Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire and an extra question about hours of VDT use recruited an initial sample of 183 participants. Only 120 participants that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were scheduled for a battery of ocular surface and MG specific exam. The tests include: 1) meibometry, 2) slit lamp exploration of eyelid margin abnormalities (irregularity, hyperemia and MG orifices plugging), MG secretion quality and conjunctival hyperemia, and 3) Meibography. RESULTS: Significant positive correlations between the MG secretion quality and eyelid margin hyperemia, MG orifices plugging, MGLA, nasal conjunctival hyperemia, and temporal conjunctival hyperemia (Spearman Rho; all r>0.186, p<0.042) were found. Multivariate regression found association between OSDI with hours of VDT use (B=0.316, p=0.007), and eyelid hyperemia (B=0.434, p≤ 0.001). A statistical association between MG secretion quality and eyelid margin hyperemia, MG orifices plugging, MGLA and conjunctival hyperemia (Fisher's exact; all p<0.039) were found. Multivariate regression found association between MG secretion quality with MG orifices plugging (B=0.295, p=0.004) and meibometry (B=-0.001, p=0.029). CONCLUSION: Participants with higher values in MG secretion quality have higher values in eyelid margin hyperemia, MG plugging, MGLA, and conjunctival hyperemia. No direct relationship between MG secretion quality and hours of VDT use or OSDI were found.

We investigated hyphae regeneration in Trichoderma atroviride and Neurospora crassa, with particular focus on determining the role of the actin cytoskeleton after mechanical injury. Filamentous actin (F-actin) dynamics was observed by live-cell confocal microscopy in both T. atroviride and N. crassa strains expressing Lifeact-GFP. In growing hyphae of both fungi, F-actin localized in three different structural forms: patches, cables and actomyosin rings. Most patches were conspicuously arranged in a collar in the hyphal subapex. A strong F-actin signal, likely actin filaments, colocalized with the core of the Spitzenkörper. Filaments and cables of F-actin were observed along the cortex throughout hyphae. Following mechanical damage at the margin of growing mycelia of T. atroviride and N. crassa, the severed hyphae lost their cytoplasmic contents, but plugging of the septal pore by a Woronin body occured, and the rest of the hyphal tube remained whole. In both fungi, patches of F-actin began accumulating next to the plugged septum. Regeneration was attained by the emergence of a new hyphal tube as an extension of the plugged septum wall. The septum wall was gradually remodeled into the apical wall of the emerging hypha. Whereas in T. atroviride the re-initiation of polarized growth took  âˆ¼ 1 h, in N. crassa, actin patch accumulation began almost immediately, and new growing hyphae were observed âˆ¼ 30 min after injury. By confocal microscopy, we found that chitin synthase 1 (CHS-1), a microvesicle (chitosome) component, accumulated next to the plugged septum in regenerating hyphae of N. crassa. We concluded that the actin cytoskeleton plays a key role in hyphal regeneration by supporting membrane remodeling, helping to facilitate transport of vesicles responsible for new wall growth and organization of the new tip-growth apparatus.

PURPOSE: The classical surgical approach for superior semicircular canal dehiscences (SSCD) is via the extradural middle cranial fossa. This pathway is used to resurface or to plug the SSC. In this paper, we present long-term data on an alternative route: the transmastoid pathway. The predictive factors for a successful surgery are equally presented in this paper. METHODS: Thirty reports of patients operated between September 2007 to January 2020 were analysed. SSCD was confirmed by the association of concordant complaints, audiometric data, cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) responses and computerized tomography findings. Before and after surgery, the following factors were analysed: auditory and vestibular subjective symptoms, Tullio phenomenon, pure-tone audiometry thresholds for air and bone conduction, air-bone gap, cVEMP threshold, and computerized tomography data, for instance the size of the dehiscence. RESULTS: The follow-up is 21 months on average. The transmastoid approach significantly improves all symptoms (although there were less probing results for the vestibular symptoms). Objectively, we can observe, a closure of the audiometric air-bone gap on the low frequencies and an improvement in the cVEMP. The only correlation that was identified was between the preoperative cVEMP results and the postoperative air conduction. CONCLUSIONS: The originality of this study is the long postoperative follow-up. It allowed us to evaluate the symptoms in the long term and to determine a predictive factor of postoperative complication, which has not yet been described until today.The transmastoid plugging technique is safe and effective. Additional long-term data with a larger cohort are needed to confirm our results and correlation studies.

Millions of abandoned oil and gas wells are scattered across the United States, causing methane emissions and other environmental hazards. Governments are increasingly interested in decommissioning these wells but want to do so efficiently. However, information on the costs of decommissioning wells is very limited. In this analysis, we provide new cost estimates for decommissioning oil and gas wells and key cost drivers. We analyze data from up to 19,500 wells and find median decommissioning costs are roughly $20,000 for plugging only and $76,000 for plugging and surface reclamation. In rare cases, costs exceed $1 million per well. Each additional 1,000 feet of well depth increases costs by 20%, older wells are more costly than newer ones, natural gas wells are 9% more expensive than wells that produce oil, and costs vary widely by state. Surface characteristics also matter: each additional 10 feet of elevation change in the 5-acre area surrounding the well raises costs by 3%. Finally, we find that contracting in bulk pays: each additional well per contract reduces decommissioning costs by 3% per well. These findings suggest that regulators can adjust bonding requirements to better match the characteristics of each well.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Given the low occurrence of clinically important paravalvular leak (PVL), there are no large registries or trials in this space to investigate management strategies. This review integrates newer evidence, particularly in imaging guidance for these complex procedures, novel techniques and approaches that our group has taken, as well as approaches to more complex PVL plugging reported in case reports. RECENT FINDINGS: Perhaps the largest area of growth in the management of PVL is the use of advanced imaging in both pre-procedure evaluation and intra-procedural guidance with gated cardiac CT, 3D TEE, and fluoroscopy fusion technologies. Outside the USA, a new device, the Occlutech PLD, has become available with early data indicating high success rates. There remains little randomized data to support the efficacy of percutaneous PVL closure. Gated cardiac CT has become key to the pre-procedure evaluation for transcatheter closure as it allows for increased procedural efficiency and more accurate pre-procedure planning, particularly when combined with 3D printing. Intra-procedural TEE-fluoro fusion allows for more rapid crossing of defects by providing a visual target for interventionalists. The advent of purpose-built devices for PVL closure may further increase the efficacy and efficiency of percutaneous closure, but significant barriers remain for approval of these devices in the USA.

We introduce our horrible experience of lateral semicircular canal exposure due to unintended drilling during left facial nerve decompression. Nearly half of the canal was drilled-out, however, the membranous labyrinth was preserved and the defect was covered with temporal fascia. Immediately after surgery, the patient complained of vertigo with right beating nystagmus. However, the patient could hear an audible tuning fork sound and the Weber-test showed left-sided deviation. The vertigo gradually subsided and the facial palsy was completely recovered 3 months after the surgery. This paper aims to study the porous structure and the mechanical properties of fly-ash-based light-weighted porous geopolymer (FBLPG), exploring the feasibility of using it in roof-adaptive end filling technology based on its in-situ foaming characteristics and plastic yielding performance. A porous structure model of FBLPG during both the slurry and solid period was established to study their influence factor. In addition, this study also built a planar structure model in the shape of a honeycomb with bore walls, proving that the bore walls possess the characteristics of isotropic force. FBLPG shows a peculiar plastic yielding performance in the experiment where its stress stays stable with the gradual increase of the deformation, which can guarantee the stability of a filling body under the cycled load from the roof. At the same time, the in-situ foaming process combined with the unique filling technique can make the FBLPG filling body fully in contact with the irregular roof. This roof-adaptive end filling technology makes it a successful application in plugging the 1305 working face, which avoids problems of the low tight-connection ratio and secondary air-leakage channel resulted from the traditional filling technology, effectively improving coal production in terms of safety and high efficiency.

RESUMO

This is a critical autoethnography of my "plugging into hope" through engagement with the Massive_Micro project as I was, literally and simultaneously, plugging into my computer during the COVID-19 pandemic isolation. In this article, I demonstrate the art of #plugging into hope. Through drawing on a range of visual, poetic, and narrative data generated throughout this project, I write my story, creating an assemblage of plugging in moments with human and non-human. Adding to an ongoing conversation with art-making, writing, and my scholarly ghosts. Highlighting the significance of deliberately plugging into embodied intra-action with our world/s-connecting to hope.

BACKGROUND: Heterogeneity of oil-bearing formations is one of major contributors to low oil recovery efficiency globally. Long-term water flooding will aggravate this heterogeneity by resulting in many large channels during the exploitation process. Thus, injected water quickly flows through these large channels rather than oil-bearing areas, which ultimately leads to low oil recovery. This problem can be solved by profile control using polymer plugging. However, non-deep profile control caused by premature plugging is the main challenge. Here, a conditional bacterial cellulose-producing strain, namely Enterobacter sp. FY-0701, was constructed for deep profile control to solve the problem of premature plugging. Its deep profile control and oil displacement capabilities were subsequently identified and assessed. RESULTS: The conditional bacterial cellulose-producing strain Enterobacter sp. FY-0701 was constructed by knocking out a copy of fructose-1, 6-bisphosphatase (FBP) encoding gene in Enterobacter sp. FY-07. Scanning electron microscope observation showed this strain produced bacterial cellulose using glucose rather than glycerol as the sole carbon source. Bacterial concentration and cellulose production at different locations in core experiments indicated that the plugging position of FY-0701 was deeper than that of FY-07. Moreover, enhanced oil recovery by FY-0701 was 12.09%, being 3.86% higher than that by FY-07 in the subsequent water flooding process. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first report of conditional biopolymer-producing strains used in microbial enhance oil recovery (MEOR). Our results demonstrated that the conditional bacterial cellulose-producing strain can in situ produce biopolymer far from injection wells and plugs large channels, which increased the sweep volume of injection water and enhance oil recovery. The construction of this strain provides an alternative strategy for using biopolymers in MEOR.

RATIONALE: Neutrophils are recruited to the airways of individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF). In adolescents and adults with CF, airway neutrophils actively exocytose the primary granule protease elastase (NE), whose extracellular activity correlates with lung damage. During childhood, free extracellular NE activity is measurable only in a subset of patients, and the exocytic function of airway neutrophils is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To measure NE exocytosis by airway neutrophils in relation to free extracellular NE activity and lung damage in children with CF. METHODS: We measured lung damage using chest computed tomography coupled with the Perth-Rotterdam Annotated Grid Morphometric Analysis for Cystic Fibrosis scoring system. Concomitantly, we phenotyped blood and BAL fluid leukocytes by flow and image cytometry, and measured free extracellular NE activity using spectrophotometric and Förster resonance energy transfer assays. Children with airway inflammation linked to aerodigestive disorder were enrolled as control subjects. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Children with CF but not disease control children harbored BAL fluid neutrophils with high exocytosis of primary granules, before the detection of bronchiectasis. This measure of NE exocytosis correlated with lung damage (R = 0.55; P = 0.0008), whereas the molecular measure of free extracellular NE activity did not. This discrepancy may be caused by the inhibition of extracellular NE by BAL fluid antiproteases and its binding to leukocytes. CONCLUSIONS: NE exocytosis by airway neutrophils occurs in all children with CF, and its cellular measure correlates with early lung damage. These findings implicate live airway neutrophils in early CF pathogenesis, which should instruct biomarker development and antiinflammatory therapy in children with CF.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness and impact on quality of life in patients undergoing plugging of superior semicircular canal dehiscence using the transmastoid approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review with prospective outcomes assessment, using validated quantitative scoring systems, was performed on 10 patients (23-76 years) who underwent transmastoid plugging of superior semicircular canal dehiscence between February 2014 and February 2018 at a tertiary referral center. Pre-operative and post-operative autophony and vertigo were measured by The Autophony Index and the Dizziness Handicap Index. Overall quality of life following intervention was measured by the Glasgow Benefit Inventory. Subjective improvement, audiological changes, and subjective quality of life changes were also recorded. RESULTS: A significant reduction in the total Dizziness Handicap Index was seen following transmastoid repair of superior semicircular canal dehiscence (p = 0.0078). This was also evident when subgroup analysis of the Dizziness Handicap Index was performed, as physical (p = 0.0273), emotional (p = 0.0078), and functional subgroups were all significantly reduced (p = 0.0117). Autophony was also significantly reduced following intervention (p = 0.0312). Overall quality of life was seen to be improved following surgery as measured by the Glasgow Benefit Inventory (p = 0.0345). CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that transmastoid plugging of a dehiscence in the superior semicircular canal is a safe and effective means of improving autophony, dizziness and overall quality of life in these patients. We believe that these results should be taken into consideration in discussions regarding surgical approach for patients who are contemplating this procedure.
